    TOPOLOGY AND ITS APPLICATIONS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 232, 112-139, Dec. 2017, Peer-reviwed, For integers m, n, d >= 1 with (m, n) not equal (1, 1) and a field F with algebraic closure (F) over bar, let Poly(n)(d,m) (F) denote the space of all m-tuples (f(1)(z), ... , f(m) (z)) is an element of F[z](m) of monic polynomials of the same degree d such that polynomials f(1)(z), ... , f(m)(z) have no common root in (F) over bar of multiplicity >= n. These spaces were defined by Farb and Wolfson [12] as generalizations of spaces first studied by Arnold, Vassiliev, Segal and others in different contexts. They obtained algebraic geometrical and arithmetic results about them. In this paper we investigate the homotopy type of these spaces for the case F = C. Our results generalize those of [12] for F = C and also results of G. Segal [28], V. Vassiliev [30] and F. Cohen-R. Cohen-B. Mann-R. Milgram [5] for m >= 2 and n >= 2. An often considered formulation of the problem (sometimes called the Atiyah-Jones problem after [1]) is to determine a (preferably optimal) integer n(D) such that the inclusion from this finite dimensional algebraic space into the corresponding infinite dimensional one induces isomorphisms of homology (or homotopy) groups through dimension n(D), where D denotes a tuple of integers called the "degree" of the algebraic maps and n(D) -> infinity as D -> infinity. In this paper we investigate this problem in the case when X is a real projective space and Y is a smooth compact toric variety.

  • SPACES OF ALGEBRAIC AND CONTINUOUS MAPS BETWEEN REAL ALGEBRAIC VARIETIES

    QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF MATHEMATICS, OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 62, 4, 771-790, Dec. 2011, Peer-reviwed, We consider the inclusion of the space of algebraic (regular) maps between real algebraic varieties in the space of all continuous maps. For a certain class of real algebraic varieties, which include real projective spaces, it is well known that the space of real algebraic maps is a dense subset of the space of all continuous maps. Our first result shows that, for this class of varieties, the inclusion is also a homotopy equivalence. After proving this, we restrict the class of varieties to real projective spaces. In this case, the space of algebraic maps has a 'minimum degree' filtration by finite-dimensional subspaces and it is natural to expect that the homotopy types of the terms of the filtration approximate closer and closer the homotopy type of the space of continuous mappings as the degree increases. We prove this and compute the lower bounds of this approximation of these spaces. This result can be seen as a generalization of the results of Mostovoy, Vassiliev and others on the topology of the space of real rational maps and the space of real polynomials without n-fold roots. It can also be viewed as a real analogue of Mostovoy's work on the topology of the space of holomorphic maps between complex projective spaces, which generalizes Segal's work on the space of complex rational maps.

We explain how these two approaches are related by the Smale-Hirsch Principle or the h-Principle of Gromov. We obtain several generalizations, which may be of interest in their own right.
