  • Horizontal integration management: An optimal switching model for parallel production system with multiple periods in smart supply chain environment
Jing Sun; Hisashi Yamamoto; Masayuki Matsui
International Journal of Production Economics, 01 Jan. 2019, © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Horizontal integration via a new generation of global value chain network is a main characteristic of Industry 4.0. As a contribution to the achievement of smart supply chain, optimal operation management for horizontal integration of production network has been paid attention to recently. This paper aims to derive an optimal switch model considering production, due date and quality for parallel production system with multiple periods in smart supply environment. Due to the customer needs of cost and delivery date shorting, prompt change in the production plan became more important. In the multi period system (For instance, production line.) where target processing time exists, production, idle and delay risks occur repeatedly for multiple periods. In such situations, delay of one period may influence the delivery date of an entire process. This kind of problem is called “a limited-cycle problem with multiple periods”, and is seen in production lines, time-bucket balancing, and production seat systems and so on. In this paper, we discuss minimum expected cost including production, due date and quality in a parallel production process, where the risk depends on the previous situation and occurs repeatedly throughout multiple periods. Also, the policy of optimal switching for parallel production system will be analysed. The results of numeric experiment in this paper show that the proposed optimal switching model can contribute to the scientific knowledge on the development of integrated solutions for parallel production system.

  • Special workers' assignment optimization under the limited-cycled model with multiple periods
Xianda Kong; Hisashi Yamamoto; Peiya Song; Jing Sun; Masayuki Matsui
Corresponding, JOURNAL OF ADVANCED MECHANICAL DESIGN SYSTEMS AND MANUFACTURING, JAPAN SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 10, 3, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Although assembly line is widely used for several decades since it appears during the Industrial Revolution, nowadays, it still has the vitality, especially in the developing countries such as China, where labor-intensive enterprise is still the mainstay industry. Assembly line has its advantages for reducing costs and production time. However, laborer is the main factor of production speed in such a labor-intensive enterprise. Because of the various working capacity of worker, one work process may delay or idle, and this will influence processes. This unforeseeable consecutive delay of process may lead to the postponing of whole manufacturing production. In order to minimize the risk, the assignment of the workers, especially untrained worker is focused on. In previous researches, rules of optimal worker assignment with two kinds of workers, which are distinguished by the capacity of processing, were proposed when minor untrained workers are less than four people. In this paper, we deal with the rules under this LCMwMP (limited-cycled model with multiple periods) model without concerning the number of minor untrained workers. Additionally, some rules of minor well-trained workers assignment optimization are researched by numerical analyses.

  • Hierarchical coordinated control of a multi-procedure CSPS system by learning optimisation methods
Hao Tang; Chao Wang; Masayuki Matsui; Bing Liu
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 53, 7, 2055-2072, Apr. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We consider the hierarchical coordinated control of a multi-procedure conveyor-serviced production station system with flexible stations deployed between adjacent procedures, which includes a dynamic intra-procedure switching control of the flexible stations for the goal of balancing different procedures and a dynamic inter-procedure production coordination of all of the stations within each procedure. It is complicated in terms of modelling and optimisation, and thus, it is difficult to find a solution using numerical methods; as a result, we refer to model-free learning optimisation methods. First, we establish a neuro-dynamic programming algorithm by utilising cerebellar model articulation controllers (CMACs) to approximate state-action values at an upper hierarchy. Second, according to the reaction-diffusion phenomenon, we combine a Wolf-PHC algorithm with a local information-interaction scheme to learn look-ahead control policies at the lower hierarchy. Simulation results show that, compared with traditional Q-learning and the backward Q-learning based Q-learning, our proposed CMAC-based learning optimisation methods have the advantages of yielding a higher processing rate and having a faster optimisation speed with a lower storage requirement.

  • Optimal Worker Assignment with Two or Three Special Workers in a Reset Limited-Cycle problem Model with Multiple Periods
    X. Kong, J. Sun, H. Yamamoto, M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 64, 2, 157-168, Jul. 2013, The classical assignment problem has been widely applied in span manufacturing, personnel scheduling and transportation, to name just a few areas. Generally, the problem seeks to minimize the cost of assigning a given set of jobs (tasks) to a group of machines (worker). Computationally, the assignment problem is considered "easy" because it can be solved in polynomial time using several efficient algorithms. In this paper, we use a limited-cycle model with multiple periods where the risk itself is also affected greatly by the risks which existed in the earlier periods, and we focus on the property of the optimal assignment with minimized total expected risk (cost) in the limited-cycle model. First, the reset model, a simple model of the limited-cycle model, is presented. Then, the optimal assignment problem under the reset model is defined. After that, the property of the optimal assignment with two special workers is proposed. Finally, the property is proved using a mathematical approach and investigated via numerical experiments with a program in which an algorithm based on the branch and bound method is used.

  • An enterprise-aided theory and logic for real-time management
    Masayuki Matsui
International Journal of Production Research, 51, 23-24, 7308-7312, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The traditional static/statistic management would not be necessarily useful under flexible/agile speed and changeable market in this century. There is the stochastic/intelligent enterprise problem toward real-time (RT) and big-data (BD) environment. Our problems are then sketched as follows: The needs to RT management would be more promoted and the look-ahead balancing problem with delay (lead time) would become more important to enterprises. This problem would include longer delay (gain) and feed-forward treatment as the larger ship control, and would be a newer and forthcoming subject beyond the traditional control theory on feedback focus. Thus, the problem would probably view and discuss a world of post-Cybernetics in the future. This paper presents a sandwich theory and develops a RT theory and look-ahead logic with delay for the enterprise-organisational behaviour under BD. The sandwich theory for the enterprise is first proposed, and would be occurred by the matching problem of the respective ellipse shape in the lower level and upper level. This correspondence would be considered as a dual problem in Matsuis form (W = ZL), and its solution would be Nashs point in the equilibrium at a pair a game. © 2013 Taylor &

Corresponding, JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING, SPRINGER, 22, 1, 101-112, Feb. 2011, Peer-reviwed, This study addresses an empirical analysis of information- and knowledge-sharing among collaborative decision makers. In this research, each decision maker represents one of three distributed centers in ERP systems: Sales, Production, and Procurement Centers. Their respective objectives and decision policies are defined to design collaborative decision-making environments. MICSS-LAN, an ERP simulation tool, was applied for the experiments, generating explicit numerical results that enable the measurement of the effectiveness and benefits by collaborative decision making. The experimental results indicate that total profit and due date performance have been improved by information- and knowledge-sharing. It implies that better design and utilization of ERP structures can be achieved by a certain level of information- and knowledge-sharing.

JOURNAL OF ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY-SCIENCE A, ZHEJIANG UNIV, 11, 2, 933-937, Dec. 2010, Peer-reviwed, Invited, In a social system or production line, the restrictions of the cost and the due-time exist in each period. Generally, whether these restrictions are satisfied is dependent not only on the risks of this period, but also on the risks generated beforehand. We consider controlling the production process by switching the processing rate to a faster one at a given period. This paper deals with the optimal switching period to minimize the total expected cost of the production process. We first propose the optimal switching period model, and then the mathematic formulation of the total expectation is presented. Finally, the policy of optimal switching period is investigated in detail by numerical experiments.

孫 晶; 玉木 欽也; 筧 宗徳; 渡辺 一衛; 石井 信明; 松井 正之; 越島 一郎
Proceedings of International Association of P2M, International Association of P2M, 2010, 96-104, 04 Sep. 2010, In global competition, a lot of enterprises try to use the ERP package to improve achievement by business reform. However, although there are a lot of cases of achievement improvement and the customer satisfaction improvement, the failing case is not few. The failing reason is various, and one of the main causes is that ERP is not able to be used well on the production site. Therefore, the ERP education is necessary for making the ERP introduction succeed. In this background, the project of ERP education system is started by research center for e-learning professional competency of Aoyama Gakuin university research institute, which also is a joint research among NTT data systems corporation and ORACLE Japan corporation. This paper reports the result of the research.

This paper proposes two models of P control chart with tardiness penalty used in short due time processes to improve the quality of manufacture. When the P control chart is used in short due time process, the penalty cost for the delay might be imposed. Therefore, clarifying and treating the assignable cause in due time with minimum cost have become a reality problem. In this paper, first, we propose two models of P control chart with tardiness penalty. Then, we explain the mathematical formulations which correspond to the two models. Finally, to clarify the management rules of process situations where the two models should be used in, we investigated the comparisons between the two models by numerical experiments in detail. • Division of Work, Stochastic (re-)Balancing and Demand Speed: From Assembly Line toward Demand Chain
    MATSUI Masayuki
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 60, 6E, 324-330, 2010, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The invisible hand in economics is generally well-known, and is hypothesized to attain a win-win situation in the division of work. Here, this invisible hand of God would be regarded as "demand speed" in Matsui(2008), and the system balancing problem using demand speed is considered stochasti-cally using a station-centered approach. This paper discusses a stochastic approach to a system, or risk balancing/re-balancing using the cycle time (demand speed) and shifting from an assembly line approach toward a demand (supply) chain, and presents a fundamental theory for the cost/profit balancing of excessive penalties derived from demand speed. First, the two cost approaches are prepared based on balancing issues. Next, line balancing using expected cost is summarized, and chain balancing using stochastic cost is discussed. Finally, these two in-teresting problems for balancing are discussed in terms of future developments in the world of the invisi-ble hand (demand speed).

  • Enterprise modeling and integration: A stochastic management approach
    Masayuki Matsui
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 122, 1, 485-491, Nov. 2009, Peer-reviwed, Recently, my book by Matsui has been published in Japanese, and the title is "Management of Manufacturing Enterprise: Profit Maximization and Factory Science." Enterprise/Factory Science means the system science of the 3M & I, in which is the complex of huMan, Material/Machine, Money and Information, and would contribute to enterprise modeling and integration issues. This paper presents the problem of enterprise/factory science, and discusses a class of 3M & I system by a stochastic management approach. First, the 3M & I system is defined, and a variety vs. structure is introduced. Next, the two structures of management are distinguished, and the demand-to-supply and process-cycle management are discussed by structural modeling. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

COMPUTERS & INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 56, 3, 1113-1125, Apr. 2009, Peer-reviwed, For sustainable manufacturing, manufacturers should construct and design inverse manufacturing systems consisting of assembly and disassembly systems. The sorting process in the disassembly system is the first process of the whole inverse manufacturing system. Therefore, it can become a bottleneck and decrease the productivity of the whole inverse manufacturing systems.
This study focuses on a disassembly system with reverse blocking in a sorting process [Yamada, T., & Matsui, M. (2003). Disassembly production systems and its design issues. Reprints of Japan Industrial Management Association, Spring meeting, Chofu, Japan, May, 144 145 (in Japanese)]. It generalizes the queuing model and discusses the performance of the disassembly system by mathematical and numerical analysis. First, the sorting process with reverse blocking is generally modeled as a queuing system. Next, the stationary state equations of the system are formulated, and the objective function is set as the throughput. Finally, the system performance is discussed by mathematical and numerical analysis in cases of a different number of stations and buffers, and also an example of the system design is shown and discussed in view of the busy rate, blocking probability and throughput. • Parallel SCM: Balancing Issues of Make-or-Buy and Supplier-Retailers Types
    M. Matsui; Y. Dai
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 60, 01, 1-10, 2009, Peer-reviwed, It is well known that SCM has an effect that reduces the extra stock and the cost of system, but how it can make all enterprises achieve the maximal profit is becoming the new problem in the institutional view. First, the two parallel SCM models are identified and formulated on the queueing base of Make-or-Buy and Supplier-Retailers types. Next, the problem of ellipse hypothesis in SCM is numerically discussed in the integral balancing view. Integral balancing means that both economics (profit) and reliability (workload) hold in autonomous balancing by cycle-time sharing. In particular, a feature map in a balance matrix is suggested for a win-win strategy, and is compared to the ellipse theory in the serial SCM type.

  • A Control Chart Design used in Supply Chain Management System
    Jing Sun; Masayuki Matsui
International Journal of Management Science and Engineering Management, 3, 3, 211-219, 2008, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a design of the x− control chart used in supply chain management system to improve customer satisfaction of supplier. Recently, due to ever increasing competition in supplier markets, it is demanded to offer the low-cost and high quality product in short due time. Therefore, studying the balance of quality and the due time and cost has become a new problem to supplier. In short run process, the time of treating an assignable cause (ACT time) is an important effect to the total cost and due time. To resolve the above problem, in this research, first a design of the control chart is developed in which the ACT time was considered. Then, from an economic viewpoint, the mathematical formulations which correspond to the design are shown. Finally, by numerically consideration, the balance of quality (control limits width) and due time and the total expectation cost is discussed, and the important relations between the due time, ACT time and the total expectation cost are investigated. © 2008 Taylor &

  • The PDCA and CAPD Economic Models of the P Control Chart
Jing Sun; Michiko Tsubaki; Masayuki Matsui
International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management, 2, 3, 365-386, 2007, Peer-reviwed, Recently, more attention has been paid to the PDCA and CAPD processes of quality management for raising the efficiency of management in the industry (Ikezawa, 1985
    Shiba and Walden, 2001
Matsui, 2005). When the P control chart is used in the short production run, in order to raise the efficiency of management, two cases often take place. One case starts from deciding the control lines, and then maintains the process with them
the other case starts from searching an assignable cause in the out-of-control state. In this paper, we propose both the PDCA and CAPD model of P control chart based on these two cases, and show their mathematical formulations. Then, from an economic viewpoint, we discuss the effect of Pa (power) on Ct (the total expectation cost) of the two models, and investigate the optimal value of sampling interval (vi) to minimise Ct in detail. Finally, by numerically analysing the two models, we found the new relationship between the key time parameters and Ct, respectively. Copyright © 2007 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

First, seven operating policies for the CSPS model are analyzed and compared on the mean delay-time. The proposed Reserve-dependent and Sequential Range Policy (RdSRP) is optimal among any stationary policies. Next, the mean number of overflows at CSPS is analytically obtained for the policy SRP, a special case of RdSRP. • Progressive-Curve-Based Control of Inventory Fluctuation under On-Demand SCM
    M. Matsui; H. Uchiyama; H. Fujikawa
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 56, 2, 139-145, 2005, Peer-reviwed, In modern enterprises, the problem of balancing supply and demand becomes important, and the supply chain management (SCM) becomes the focus of attention. Under on-demand SCM, it is important to reduce the risk of supply chain over/under-stocking in real time. To hedge the risks, the equation of flow control is re-considered, and a dynamic logic control is introduced. For the logistics of PC products, this paper develops a look-ahead control logic based on a progressive curve. For simplicity, it is assumed that the demand (output) is uncontrollable (given), and the supply (input) is controllable (manageable) on the basis of base-inventory only. First, the moving base-inventory is obtained from the formulation of a Newsboy problem. Next, this indicator is checked by a cumulative control chart in quality control, and supply action (input) is carried out timely, within the upper limit. In this study, this method is applied to the warehouse company A, and a cumulative inventory reduction of approximately 42% is attained.

  • A Management Cycle Model: Switching Control under Lot Processing and Time Span
    M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 56, 4, 256-264, 2005, Peer-reviwed, From the standpoint of operations management, we focus on a management cycle that consists of plan (P), do (D), check (C) and act (A) phases, and concern with the difference between PDCA and CAPD cycles. This paper studies a mathematical/stochastic modeling of the management cycle under lot processing and time span. This modeling is called the type of (t, k; T)-switching policy, in which the notations t, k and T means the review period, control limit and time span (due time), respectively. First, the switching modeling of the look-ahead (back) in PDCA (CAPD) is presented by stochastic approach, and corresponds to the trade-off problem of earliness (c_2) and tardiness (c_3) from time span (T). Next, the expected operating cost per unit produced is given by mathematical formulation, and the exponential processing type is treated as a special case of general service. Finally, the problem of optimal look-ahead/back strategy is numerically discussed and clarified on the base of(c_3, c_2)-strategy map in the fixed or variable T. In addition, an application to MRP/APS etc. is noted.

  • A Design Problem of Assembly Line Systems using Genetic Algorithm under the BTO Environment
Kazuaki Abe; Tetsuo Yamada; Masayuki Matsui
IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, 124, 10, 2006-2013, 2004, Peer-reviwed, Under the BTO environment, stochastic assembly lines require design methods which shorten not only the production lead time but also the ready time for the line design. We propose a design method for Assembly Line Systems (ALS) in Yamada et al. (2001) by using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Adam-Eve GA, in which all design variables are determined in consideration of constraints such as line length related to the production lead time. First, an ALS model with a line length constraint is introduced, and an optimal design problem is set to maximize the net reward under shorter lead time. Next, a simulation optimization method is developed using Adam-Eve GA and traditional GA. Finally, an optimal design example is shown and discussed by comparing the 2-stage design by Yamada et al. (2001) and both the GA designs. It is shown that the Adam-Eve GA is superior to the traditional GA design in terms of computational time though there is only a slight difference in terms of net reward. © 2004, The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. A strategic management/design approach is discussed by applying the two-stage design method. It gives the problem of setting the economic leadtime in the respective models. The existence of economic leadtime is ascertained numerically, and a design comparison of a periodic versus a semidynamic type is given. The pair-matrix table consisting of economics and reliability elements is then given for summary, and a strategy for demand-to-supply management is discussed on ellipse shape. Finally, an real situation is introduced and the validity of modelling shown.

  • A Management Game Model: Economic Traffic, Leadtime and Pricing Setting
    M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 53, 1, 1-9, 2002, Peer-reviwed, Recent market conditions require flexible or higher speed for products to reach markets. This speed is limited by a bottleneck under market/production capacity, and this problem is known as the theory of constraints (TOC) in the supply chain management (SCM). The model here proposed originates in a paper by Matsui (1983, 1988), and has quite a distinctive origin in comparison to the bottleneck theory in TOC. This paper presents a new management model of enterprises (MGM), gives a design or decision-making method for management, and discusses the similarities of the model in comparison with the theory of constraints (TOC). First, the MGM model is presented as the pair-type cooperative vs. non-cooperative game model of maximizing the throughput, i.e., the marginal profit between the sales price and the operating cost per unit time, under a bottleneck dependent to demand (market)/supply (production). Next, the 2-stage design method proposed determines the economic traffic of market/production in the first stage (economics), and sets the economic leadtime/pricing and constraints under the economic traffic in the second stage (reliability). Finally, a special example of MGM is given and considered under a M/M/1 enterprise model, a variety of management solutions/designs is discussed on a pair-matrix table, and a comparison to bottleneck solutions is noted.

Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 53, 2, 170-177, 2002, Peer-reviwed, Suppose that a manager controls a job-shop production system with the backlog by order-selection and switch-over. This paper discusses the 2-stage design problem of the job-shop production model with backlog control from the views of theory and an application study. For this purpose, we apply the 2-stage design method (Matsui, 1999) to the two models : periodic and semi-dynamic types. By the 2-stage design method, the economic traffic that maximizes the net reward (=reward-cost) is decided at the first stage. At the second stage, the economic leadtime is set under the economic traffic. First, a behavioral comparison of discrete and continuous types is given by simulation, and the 2-stage design method for continuous type is showed. Next, the periodic and semi-dynamic models of A company are given under three cases and eight arrival patterns, and the usefulness and robustness of the 2-stage design method are exhibited.

  • 2-Stage Design Method for Assembly Line Systems: A Unified Approach
    T. Yamada; M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 51, 6, 538-549, 2001, Peer-reviwed, Assembly factories often consist of multiple production stations connected by conveyors to transport and store materials. In assembly manufacturing, among systems using conveyors, there are two major types of array for unit stations : the line type and the flexible type, and they differ in material flows of processed and overflowed items. The former system is known as Assembly Line Systems (ALS), in which each station has the two cases with and without stoppers. This paper focuses on the case without stoppers, considers the design problem as a coordination problem between unit stations (Generalized CSPSs) by using the station-centered approach, and proposes a 2-Stage Design Method for integrating the line balancing and stochastic buffer design problems. In this method, the preliminary stage is to set an initial value for the cycle time given the number of stations, production planning quantity and production planning period. The first stage is to decide the economic cycle time for minimizing the total expected operating cost. The second stage is to decide the economic buffers for minimizing the total expected operating cost under the economic cycle time, and the first and second stages are repeated till the minimal cost is attained. First, we consider the station-centered vs. system-centered approach to the ALS without stoppers, and show the effectiveness of the former. Next, the 2-Stage Design Method by that approach is proposed, and the merits are shown by an optimal design example. In addition, generalizations about the given cycle time and finite working zone are numerically discussed.

  • 2-Stage Design Method for Assembly Line System with Stoppers
    T. Yamada; M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 51, 6, 594-602, 2001, Peer-reviwed, In assembly systems, there are two major types of array of unit stations : the line type (ALS) and the flexible type (FAS). Using a unified approach (Yamada and Matsui, 1997,1999), this paper discusses a stochastic design problem of the ALS with stoppers which prevent the overflow of items. First, the objective function for the station-centered approach is considered. A simple case of D/M/1 type by queueing approach and a typical case of D/E_k/1 type by simulation are introduced, and the 3-station case is considered by comparing the two cases of balking and blocking. Next, the 2-stage design procedure for the ALS with stoppers is presented, and the two cases of ALS with and without stoppers are unified. Finally, an optimal design example is shown by applying this procedure, and the two cases are compared numerically.

  • A Queuing Consideration for Japanese Production System and Its 2-Stage Design
    M. Matsui; C. Zhang; S. Ichihara
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 52, 2, 69-79, 2001, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents three economic queueing models of push and pull types, discusses the limits of pull on Japanese production systems, and considers the problem of setting the economic leadtime by 2-stage design metbod. A single-stage lot/cell production system under make-to-order/stock is here treated, and is assumed to be Poisson arrival and exponential service in batch. First, we give the expected operatian cost of three queueing models. This cost consists of inventory/order, backlog, busy, and idle costs, and the bebaviours of these costs are showed as a function of mean processing time or fixed setup time. The optimal(or economic)traffic exists, and the minimum operating cost is found grapbically. Second, the push vs.pull system is discussed from a view of inventory or operating cost. One limitation of the pull system is that a reduction in setup-time can cause the inventory cost to inflate, and a minimum operating cost exists. Another limitation is that the pull system is specially better for the case that the inventory cost is important to managers, but that a backlog is allowed. Third, a scientific basis of economic leadtime setting is given by 2-stage de-sign method. The economic processing time is obtained at the first stage, and the economic leadtime can be set at the second stage under the economic processing time. The economic leadtime of a pull system is not necessarily better than that of a push system.

  • The Performance Evaluation of Flexible Manufacturing Systems with Finite Local Buffers: Fixed and Dynamic Routings
M Matsui; S Uehara; JS Ma
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS, KLUWER ACADEMIC PUBL, 13, 4, 405-424, 2001, Peer-reviwed, This article evaluates the performance of flexible manufacturing systems with finite local buffers and fixed or dynamic routing rules, and addresses the optimal design or system configuration problem of maximizing the system throughput. The costs include machine cost, part (or pallet) cost, and local buffers cost. First, the system throughputs and their behaviors are considered with both queueing network analysis and simulation, and it is shown for a fixed routing model that the system throughput in the case of finite local buffers is greater than in the case of infinite local buffers. For a fixed versus dynamic routing rule, it is also found that the throughput in the former case can be close to the one in the latter case by changing the setting parameters. Next, the design problems of maximizing the system throughput are considered numerically for fixed and dynamic routing cases. Then, it is seen that better combination of design variables is a class of the monotonicity in local buffers, service rates, and routing probabilities.

  • Optimal Control of a Job-Shop Production System: Periodic versus Dynamic Type
    M Matsui; K Kaneda; K Kanbara
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 38, 13, 2951-2966, Sep. 2000, Peer-reviwed, Following recent work of Matsui, Yang and Miya, the authors assume that jobshop production systems consist of the sales centre-with order-selection-and the production centre-with switch-over. This paper studies on the control problem of a job-shop Production system of periodic versus dynamic type. First, a stochastic model of semi-dynamic type is proposed, and the two sub-objective functions: the mean accepted price and the mean operating cost, are given. Next, a cooperative versus non-cooperative problem of sales and production centres is discussed, and the non-monotonicity of optimal selection criteria is again found. Finally, a comparison of the alternative periodic, dynamic and semi-dynamic types is given, and the optimal structure is found.

  • A New Method for Coordinate Type Facilities Layout Using Locatable Edges
    X. Pang; A. Suzuki; M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 50, 6, 381-388, 2000, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a new approach to the coordinate type facilities layout problem. The site and each facility location are represented in a coordinate system. The objective is to minimize the total cost incluing the material handling cost and site areas cost, and maximize a closeness rating measure. We present "locatable edges" for the facility arrangement in order to restrain the search space. The results indicate that the model does an excellent job for the facilities layout problem with unequal areas as well as with equal areas, and that the ability to handle large scale problems is also improved.

  • The Leadtime of a Job-Shop Production System and Its 2-Stage Design
    M. Matsui, Y. Nakada, K. Kaneda
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 51, 2, 124-131, 2000, Peer-reviwed, Suppose that a job-shop production system consists of a sales center with order-selection and a production center with switch-over. These main models are of periodic and semi-dynamic types. This paper discusses the problem of setting the leadtime of the two models and gives a scientific basis for economic leadtime. For this purpose, we apply the 2-stage design method to the two models. By the 2-stage design method, the economic traffic that maximizes the net reward (=reward-cost) is decided at the first stage. At the second stage, the economic leadtime is set under the economic traffic. First, the respective mean leadtimes are given by the corresponding stochastic models. The mean leadtimes are then obtained from the total mean holding time divided by the number of mean processing units. Next, the respective behaviors of net rewards and leadtimes are numerically considered under the four traffic variables, two selection criteria and two control levels. The existence of economic leadtime is ascertained here. Finally, a comparison of periodic and semidynamic types is given, and a sensitivity analysis of leadtime is shown. Generally, the semi-dynamic type is superior to the periodic type in terms of the economic leadtime.

  • Communication Based Coordination Modeling in Distributed Manufacturing Systems
JA Ceroni; M Matsui; SY Nof
Corresponding, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 60-61, 281-287, Apr. 1999, Peer-reviwed, Global markets are increasingly demanding organizations to collaborate and coordinate efforts for coping with distributed customers, operations, and suppliers. An important aspect of the collaboration process of distributed, often remote organizations is the coordination cost. The coordination equipment and operating costs limit the benefit attainable from collaboration. In certain cases, this cost can turn the interaction among distributed organizations non-profitable. Previous research investigated a distributed manufacturing case, operating under a job-shop model with two distributed collaborating centers, one for sales and one for production. A new model incorporating the communication cost of coordination has been developed and yields the net reward of the total system, determining the profitability of the coordination. Two alternative coordination modes are examined: (1) distributed coordination by the two centers; (2) centralized coordination by a third party. The results indicate that distributed and centralized coordination modes are comparable up to a certain limit; over this limit distributed coordination is always preferred. A key conclusion is that distributed coordination should always be preferred (to centralized coordination) when the hardware costs for the distributed system are less than or to half the hardware costs of the centralized system. We consider the control problem of maximizing the marginal profit of a job-shop production system with order-selection and switch-over. First, a stochastic model is proposed to derive the two sub-objective functions: the mean accepted price and the mean operating cost. Next, the stochastic model is formulated in two ways as the cooperative versus non-cooperative control problem of sales and production centres. • Performance Evaluation of a Simple Flexible Assembly System and Its 2-Stage Design
    S. A. Feyzbakhsh, A. Kimura, M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 49, 6, 393-401, 1999, Peer-reviwed, Conveyors are used to transport or deliver material and also to store it, and the conveyor-serviced production systems (CSPSystems) generally consists of multiple generalized conveyor-serviced production stations (generalized CSPSs) (Matsui, 1993). This paper studies an ordered-entry array of unit stations, generalized CSPSs, called a simple flexible assembly system (simple FAS). In this station-centered approach, the main concern is a coordination problem or system balancing between generalized CSPs, and this design problem has not yet been discussed anywhere. From the view of performance evaluation, we first found that allowing for only an overflow from the last station is sufficient to minimize the total expected cost of simple FAS, and there is a limit point to decrease the overflow rate by increasing a coefficient of overflows. Also, the arrangement of heterogeneous servers gave a counter example that the best server's arrangement under the case of in-process inventory is established by arranging the ascending order of processing rates to decrease both the overflow rate and the total expected cost. Second, we propose a simple 2-stage design method for simple FAS, and discuss an optimal design procedure using the complex-type method or genetic algorithms. This basic idea (Matsui, 1994) originates in dividing some design variables into input/output variables like cycle time and buffer variables like look-ahead times and reserve capacities. In this method, the first stage is to set the parameters, the cycle time and the number of stations. The second stage is to design the buffers, the look-ahead times and the reserve capacities under the given traffic. Finally, a design example is given and discussed.

  • Adam-Eve Genetic Algorithm: A Methodology for Optimal Design of a Simple Flexible Assembly System
    S. Alireza Feyzbakhsh; Masayuki Matsui
Computers and Industrial Engineering, Elsevier Science Ltd, 36, 2, 233-258, 1999, Peer-reviwed, The assembly process is an essential part of the total manufacturing process in today's manufacturing system. The simple Flexible Assembly System (FAS) which is proposed in this article includes a set of Removal Item Case (RIC) of Generalized CSPS workstations. Since there are numerous system parameters and variables with considerable interaction, the optimal design of the system seems to be a complex task. An Adam-Eve-like GA was introduced and proposed in order to design the simple FAS. Taking a hint from nature, the proposed method has some special characteristics which distinguish it from others. A comparison between the Adam-Eve-like GA and traditional GAs was conducted. Based on the results from an optimization standpoint, the Adam-Eve-like GA seems to produce reasonable engineering results in an inherently difficult area where few other techniques are available. Findings suggest that it may be beneficial to apply the Adam-Eve-like GA to other difficult optimization problems.

  • Optimal Design of a Generalized Conveyor-Serviced Production Station: Fixed and Removal Item Cases
SA Feyzbakhsh; M Matsui; K Itai
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 55, 2, 177-189, Jul. 1998, Peer-reviwed, This paper treats an approach to the optimal design of the conveyor system such that arrival/service times vary in a probabilistic manner. The single station model here considered is both cases of a single generalized conveyor-serviced production station (generalized CSPS) by Matsui (1993), i.e., fixed item case (FIC) and removal item case (RIC). A methodology to design simultaneously both cycle (mean-interarrival) time and buffers is proposed, and the two-step method and the Complex-type method for FIC and RIG, respectively, are given and discussed numerically. In addition, by use of the proposed methods the effectiveness of the look-ahead time are included. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Queuing Analysis and Optimal Control of a Job-Shop Production System of Dynamic Type
    K. Kanbara, K. Tamaki, M. Matsui
Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 49, 5, 327-337, 1998, Peer-reviwed, Suppose that a job-shop production system consist of a sales center with order-selection and a production center with switch-over. Job orders have variable estimated prices and arrive frequently at irregular or random intervals under a changeable production capacity. The macro-level problem considered is summarized as follows. Accepting all orders is not always the best option due to changeable capacity considerations. A manager of job shops is faced with the problem of selecting and processing the orders according to some decision rule, and that of increasing the idle (opportunity) cost of a job shop. We will here decide the structure of the best decision rule under a dynamic job-shop production system. This paper discusses a typical dynamic job-shop model, in the case where fixed switching costs are assumed when two processing types are switched between each other. Four control variables are introduced : two selection criteria (c_1,c_2) and two control levels (i_1,i_2). First, a stochastic model is proposed to derive the two sub-objective functions : the mean accepted price and mean operating cost of the long-run average. Next, by numerical considerations, a cooperative vs.non-cooperative problem of sales and production centers and a periodic vs.dynamic model are discussed. Finally, a revised version of dynamic job-shop production is proposed, and the non-monotonicity of selection criteria (c^*_1,c^*_2) is pointed out.

Finally the performance of fixed routing model with optimized routing probabilities is compared to dynamic routing model, and an example of the optimal configurations for these models is given.

It also points out an economical reason why it is desirable to use a regular arrival schedule. Based on inspection theory, is given an interesting result that the optimal arrival schedule is a nonincreasing arrival schedule. Moreover, the optimal schedule can be achieved by introduction of a design factor, ε(0≤ε<1), under regular arrival. Finally, a comparison between regular and nonincreasing arrival schedule is made by some numerical examples, and the Generalized CSPS under the regular arrival is discussed.

Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, Japan Industrial Management Association, 46, 3, 212-224, 1995, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, the job-shop control policies of periodic vs. dynamic type under order-selection and fixed switching-costs are evaluated and discussed by the respective simulation models. The respective models incorporate fixed quoting/switching time in the previous analytic models, and have the two objective functions of the net reward (=price-cost) per unit time and the mean flow-time. Although the monotonicity of the optimal policy of periodic type does not necessarily hold, that of dynamic type is ascertained. Also, a comparison of the optimal policy of periodic vs. dynamic type is given.

By numerical considerations, the following results are found : First, from a comparison of distributions, the policy RdSRP is superior to the policy SdSRP. Second, it is such a look-ahead interval (or time-range) that minimizes a variance of delay-times or a tail probability of work-cycle times. In conclusion, the policy RdSRP is superior in not only mean value but also variance.

In today's society, there is extremely keen competition among manufacturing enterprises. Under such circumstances, it is vital for these enterprises to meet the delivery date deadlines. Under uncertain conditions, the result or efficiency of a period is often controlled not only by the risks of this period, but also by the risks generated beforehand. This kind of problem is called the limited-cycle problem with multiple periods. In this research, the issue of minimum expected risk in a certain period will be discussed, assuming that risk appears in multiple periods repeatedly. This paper considers the rules for an optimal arrangement with minimum total expected risk in a limited-cycle scheduling problem with multiple periods. Firstly, we consider the situation involving two kinds of workers who have different processing efficiencies. In this situation, we propose the properties of optimal arrangement where there is one special worker who has special processing efficiency. Secondly, the properties are proven mathematically. Finally, we reveal the unknown part through numerical experiments. This paper is significant as one step to derive the optimal arrangement theoretically., Dec. 2011, Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, 62, 5, 239-246, Japanese, 1342-2618, 120005325371, AN10561806

In global competition, a lot of enterprises try to use the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) package to improve achievement by business reform. This paper considers the optimal arrangement to minimize the total expected risk on limited-cycle scheduling problem with multiple periods. In this paper, first, the multi period problem is systematically classified and modeled. Next, a recursive formula for the total expected risk is presented, and an algorithm for optimal assignments in limited-cycle problems with multiple periods is proposed based on the branch and bound method. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown by investigating the calculation time of the computer. Finally, the optimal assignments are studied by numerical experiments and the property useful for the design of a production seat system is found. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. • A control chart design for supplier in view of quality, due time and cost
    J. Sun; M. Matsui
This paper presents a design of the x̄ control chart in view of quality, due time and cost to improve customer satisfaction of supplier. To resolve the above problem, in this research, first a design of the x̄ control chart is developed in which the ACT time was considered. Then, from an economic viewpoint, the mathematical formulations which correspond to the design are shown. Finally, by numerically consideration, the balance of quality (control limits width) and due time and the total expectation cost is discussed, and the new relations between the due time, ACT time and the total expectation cost are found. © 2007 IEEE., 2007, IEEM 2007: 2007 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, 1639-1643, English, 40649108107

  • A Management Game Model of Service System Type
    M Matsui; A Saito
There are the sales and production centers in enterprises. Recently, the 2-center model for enterprises is developed to a management game model (MGM) in Matsui (2002), and the ellipse theory with pair-pole is found on the pair-matrix table. However, the discussion is somewhat limited to manufacturing system type. This paper discusses the concept of service systems, formulates a MGM model of service system type, and develops the MGM theory.
First, the service type MGM is defined, and the behaviors of objective function are considered. Next, the ellipse theory is ascertained on the pair-matrix table, and the usage is discussed under a strategic goal. In addition, the service vs. manufacturing system type is noted., INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC PUBLISHERS LTD, 2004, SERVICE SYSTEMS AND SERVICE MANAGEMENT - PROCEEDINGS OF ICSSSM '04, VOLS 1 AND 2, 1, 50-53, English, WOS:000223847800011

  • 2-A-1 CONCEPT OF MANAGEMENT SCHEDULER AND A SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT :
Matsui Masayuki; Yamada Tetsuo; Nishioka Yasuyuki
Production scheduling problems have become more complex and strategic in manufacturing enterprises in recent years. Because of such complexities, managers usually use scheduling software to plan feasible schedules under the circumstances of production. Currently available scheduling software does not seem to have the functions of evaluating schedules sufficiently in view of management considering factors such as profit and lead time. To realize the necessary functions of such software, we connect scheduling software to management software, and present a concept of the Management Scheduler through a software development. Here, the Managerial APSTOMIZER is developed as software of the Management Scheduler by connecting the APSTOMIZER for scheduling to Matsui's patent software (named MAP-A1) for management. Fist, the concept of the management scheduler and the management by progressive figures are explained, and the system architecture is prepared. Next, the Managerial APSTOMIZER is introduced by connecting the APSTOMIZER to MAP-A1,and the operating procedure is developed. Finally, the execution of an example is done by using the software, and the merits of the software are shown by graphs, etc., 日本機械学会, 2002, Proceedings of International Symposium on Scheduling, 2002, 25-28, English, 110002483497, AA11901544

  • Queueing Analysis and Optimal Control of a Job-Shop Production System of Dynamic Type
KANBARA Kazuhiro; TAMAKI Mitsushi; MATSUI Masayuki
Suppose that a job-shop production system consist of a sales center with order-selection and a production center with switch-over. Finally, a revised version of dynamic job-shop production is proposed, and the non-monotonicity of selection criteria (c^*_1,c^*_2) is pointed out., Japan Industrial Management Association, 1998, Journal of Japan Industrial Management Association, 49, 5, 327-337, Japanese, 1342-2618, 110003945604, AN10561806

This paper evaluates the performance of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) with finite local buffers by using the theory of closed queueing networks, and discusses the optimal design problem of maximizing its system throughput under a few facility costs. First, the behavior of the system throughput is considered, and it is found that it has the maximum and its value is greater than the case of infinite local buffers. Next, a design problem of system configuration is formulated, and an optimization algorithm using implicit enumeration method is proposed. Finally, a numerical example is given., Japan Industrial Management Association, 1994, Abstracts of the 3rd Conference of the Association of Asian-Pacific Operational Research within IFORS, 45, 5, 267-471, Japanese, 0386-4812, 110003936526, AN00187973

  • Study on Evaluation of Computer Integrated System
OGIWARA Yotaro; VLACIC Ljubisa b.; SUZUKI Atsushi; MATSUI Masayuki; KEITH J.Morgan
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, Today, many manufacturing plants must compete world-wide for their business and the plant's directions should be justified before making major advanced technology related investment decisions. Although almost every computerization of an enterprise system is led by both market driven and technology driven success factors, it is of utmost importance to measure to which extent the goals, set prior to the advanced technology investment decision making stage, are achieved after the advanced system has been installed. This project deals with a decision model to be used for Computer Integrated Enterprise/Manufacturing (CIE/CIM) implementation related decision making. This model has already been successfully used, in conjunction with the model solving algorithm, in evaluation of CIE/CIM implementation results across six Japanese enterprises., 06045014
