  • Wave propagation through a set of slits
    Makoto Morinaga
OPTICAL REVIEW, OPTICAL SOC JAPAN, 22, 1, 33-38, Feb. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Propagation of a wave through a set of identical slits is investigated using a scalar diffraction theory. The slits are aligned on a straight line with equal spacing. The asymptotic expansion of the matrix elements of the propagation operator is derived and compared with numerical calculations. And then the eigenmodes and eigen-values of the propagation operator are estimated. Our analysis should provide an insight into the properties of waveguides composed of opaque masks that have been proposed recently.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 109, 6, 063602, Aug. 2012, Peer-reviwed, We experimentally demonstrate the efficient channeling of fluorescence photons from single q dots on optical nanofiber into the guided modes by measuring the photon-count rates through the guided and radiation modes simultaneously. We obtain the maximum channeling efficiency to be 22.0(+/- 4.8)% at a fiber diameter of 350 nm for the emission wavelength of 780 nm. The results may open new possibilities in quantum information technologies for generating single photons into single-mode optical fibers.

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 18, 16, 17154-17164, Aug. 2010, Peer-reviwed, We show that the fluorescence emission spectrum of few atoms can be measured by using an optical nanofiber combined with the optical heterodyne and photon correlation spectroscopy. The observed fluorescence spectrum of the atoms near the nanofiber shows negligible effects of the atom-surface interaction and agrees well with the Mollow triplet spectrum of free-space atoms at high excitation intensity. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 70, 1, 011401, Jul. 2004, Peer-reviwed, We suggest using an evanescent wave around a thin fiber to trap atoms. We show that the gradient force of a red-detuned evanescent-wave field in the fundamental mode of a silica fiber can balance the centrifugal force when the fiber diameter is about two times smaller than the wavelength of the light and the component of the angular momentum of the atoms along the fiber axis is in an appropriate range. As an example, the system should be realizable for cesium atoms at a temperature of less than 0.29 mK using a silica fiber with a radius of 0.2 mum and a 1.3-mum-wavelength light with a power of about 27 mW.

APPLIED PHYSICS B-LASERS AND OPTICS, SPRINGER, 76, 8, 801-803, Jul. 2003, One-dimensional focusing of an atomic beam from a flat reflector is experimentally demonstrated. Focusing occurs because gravity changes the momentum transfer perpendicular to the surface depending on the height of the reflecting point. Theoretical analysis shows that, for a certain parametric range, diffraction-limited focusing of an atomic beam is possible.

  • Cesium gas strongly confined in one dimension: Sideband cooling and collisional properties
Bouchoule, I; M Morinaga; C Salomon; DS Petrov
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 65, 3, 033402, Mar. 2002, Peer-reviwed, We study one-dimensional (1D) sideband cooling of cesium atoms strongly confined in a far-detuned optical lattice. The Lamb-Dicke regime is achieved in the lattice direction whereas the transverse confinement is much weaker. The employed sideband cooling method, first studied by Vuletic et al., uses Raman transitions between Zeeman levels and produces a spin-polarized sample. We present a detailed study of this cooling method and investigate the role of elastic collisions in the system. We accumulate 83(5)% of the atoms in the vibrational ground state of the strongly confined motion, and elastic collisions cool the transverse motion to a temperature of 2.8 muK=0.7 (h) over bar omega(osc)/k(B), where omega(osc) is the oscillation frequency in the strongly confined direction. The sample then approaches the regime of a quasi-2D cold gas. We analyze the limits of this cooling method and propose a dynamical change of the trapping potential as a mean of cooling the atomic sample to still lower temperatures. Measurements of the rate of thermalization between the weakly and strongly confined degrees of freedom are compatible with the zero-energy scattering resonance observed previously in weak 3D traps. For the explored temperature range the measurements agree with recent calculations of quasi-2D collisions. Transparent analytical models reproduce the expected behavior for k(B)T>>(h) over bar omega(osc) and also for k(B)T<<(h) over bar omega(osc) where the 2D features are prominent.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 83, 20, 4037-4040, Nov. 1999, Peer-reviwed, Cold Cs atoms are cooled into the ground state (n = 0) of a far detuned 1D optical lattice. From this state, we prepare and detect several quantum states of motion. First, we produce squeezed states of n = 0 (and n = 1) and record the time evolution of the velocity distribution of these states. A velocity distribution compressed by a factor of 4 compared to that of the ground state is obtained. Second, we prepare a linear superposition of n = 0 and n = 1 and observe its time evolution.

JOURNAL OF VACUUM SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY B, AMER INST PHYSICS, 16, 6, 3855-3858, Nov. 1998, Peer-reviwed, Atomic beam holography is a unique technique by which to fabricate a nanoscale object by using the interference of matter waves of ultracold atoms. The atomic de Broglie wave coming through a hologram interferes with and reconstructs a desired structure on a substrate. We first demonstrated holographic manipulation of metastable Ne atoms of 7 nm wavelength, where we showed the reconstruction of an "F" pattern and improvement of it. In this article, we propose and show techniques to manipulate three-dimensionally cooled Ne atoms. Atomic beam holography has the potential to make atomic-size objects, and the freedom in designing the hologram enables us to make not only a binary pattern but also an analog (gray scale) pattern. The resolution demonstrated in this experiment was about 60 mu, but the minimum feature size expected is theoretically the same as the wavelength, i.e., several nanometers. NATURE, MACMILLAN MAGAZINES LTD, 380, 6576, 691-694, Apr. 1996, Peer-reviwed, TECHNIQUES for manipulating neutral atoms are valuable tools for the investigation of surfaces, acid hold promise for the fabrication of atomic structures for technological applications. The ability to position individual atoms with the accuracy of a crystal lattice constant has been demonstrated(1) using the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). On the other hand, manipulation with lasers offers a means of controlling atoms in bulk, although it lacks the positional accuracy of the STM. The ability to generate ultra-cold atoms(2-5) using lasers has opened new possibilities: because of their long de Broglie wavelengths, cold atoms are amenable to interferometric manipulation, such as deflection by a grating(6,7) and focusing by a Fresnel lens(8). Here we demonstrate a potentially more flexible approach to atomic manipulation based on holographic principles. We pass a beam of ultra-cold metastable neon atoms through a computer-generated hologram that encodes the Fourier transform of a desired atomic pattern. Diffraction of the atomic beam by the hologram then reconstructs the pattern, in a manner analogous to optical holography. This approach should in principle enable the imposition of arbitrary intensity and phase information onto an atomic beam.

  • Investigation of the quantum reflection of atoms on a solid state surface
SHIMIZU Kazuko; TAKEDA Mitsuo; MORINAGA Makoto
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), We studied the quantum reflection of the metastable helium atoms on a flat polished silicon surface. We measured the reflectivity as a function of the normal incident velocity component between 3 and 30 cm/s, and confirm that on a flat surface the reflection of atoms is caused by the attractive van der Waals potential. In our case the atoms are mainly reflected in a region where the retardation effect leads to a potential of the approximate form, U(z)=-C_4/z^4 where z is the distance from the surface. We also studied the reflection and diffraction on surface structures consisting of parallel narrow ridges. The structure consists of wall-like ridges at a distance of L=5μm and with a width at the top of l=100nm. We observed on this structure an increase of the reflectivity by two orders of magnitude, exceeding 10% for normal incident velocities below about 25cm/s. At grazing incidence even fast atoms of 100m/s can be reflected very efficiently at such a surface structure. In order to quantitatively describe our data, we have developed a theoretical description of the reflection and scattering of atomic waves from our surface structures. As a first approximation we can assume that the van der Waals constant is reduced by a factor l/L, where l is the size at the top of the ridges and L the distance between the ridges. The reflectivity on the ridges structures then follows immediately from the scaling law of the quantum reflection. Deviations appear when the ratio l/L is very small. In the limiting case of l/L→0, i.e. of idealized thin ridges, a new interesting effect can be observed: The atomic wave is reflected due to the Fresnel diffraction at the array of ridges., 16340116

  • Atom Optics (Technical Application of Laser Cooling)
SHIMIZU Fujio; NAKAGAWA Ken-ichi; SHUNIZU Kazuto; MORINAGA Atsuo; SHIRAHAMA Keiya; MORINAGA Makoto
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, We have worked in three areas of atom optics. (1)The development of atom optics components by Shimizu's group, (2)the study of atom chips with Rb BEC by Nakagawa's group, and (3)atom interferometries by Morinaga's group. (1) Various components were demonstrated by using an ultra-cold metastable neon atomic beam. The focusing of an atomic beam with a static electric lens, arbitrary patterning of an atomic beam with a transmission type hologram made of SiN thin film were demonstrated. By depositing electrodes on the hologram of the SiN film we demonstrated real time control of holographic image of atoms. The group also experimentally verified quantum reflection on a solid surface for the first time. Furthermore, they found mat the reflectivity can be improved remarkably by modifying me slid surface. This result was applied to make a reflective type hologram, beam splitter and one dimensional focusing lens. (2) Nakagawa's group developed a rubidium BEC (the third in this country). Loading of atoms from BEC in mind, they constructed an atom chip consisting of miniature wires carrying current to guide and trap atoms. Preliminary experiment of loading laser cooled atoms was verified. The group also worked on a rubidium atom interferometer that is aimed to measure gravity G constant. (3) Morinaga's group studied on a thermal calcium atom interferometer and a laser cooled sodium atom interferometer. With calcium they measured Aharonov-Casher phase shift with an accuracy better than 3%. With sodium they demonstrated time-domain multiple interferometer that had a finesse better than 100., 11216202
