  • Searching Method for the Optimal Evacuation Routes at the Time of Earthquake Outbreak
    Kayoko Yamamoto; Yuichiro Shimura
2017 JOINT URBAN REMOTE SENSING EVENT (JURSE), IEEE, 4p.(CR-ROM), 2017, Peer-reviwed, Invited, This study treats the determination of routes for evacuation on foot in earthquake disasters as a multi-objective optimization problem, and aims to propose a searching method for the optimal evacuation routes to emergency evacuation areas using a multi-objective genetic algorithm (multi-objective GA) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems). The conclusions can be summarized in the following two points. (1) A GA was used to design and create an evacuation route search algorithm which solves the problem of the optimization of earthquake disaster evacuation routes by treating it as an optimization problem with multiple objectives, such as evacuation distance and evacuation time. (2) In this method, goodness of fit is set by using a Pareto ranking method to determine the ranking of individuals based on their relative superiorities and inferiorities.

    Kayoko Yamamoto; Kuangtiao Shen
Springer Optimization and Its Applications, Springer International Publishing, 128, 55-77, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Invited, This study aims to evaluate measures for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from automobile traffic in the 23-ward district of Tokyo (central Tokyo), Japan, using the methods of spatial analysis by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistical analysis. All of the measures to prevent global warming in Japan were first investigated to extract nine measures to reduce CO2 emissions and then classified into the three groups. Secondly, using the GIS functions for database creation and information analysis, a digital map databases reflecting the real situation of automobile traffic in the study area was created. Using this database, the reduction of CO2 emissions was calculated before and after the implementation of the above nine measures (2005 and 2011) in each road unit. Furthermore, in order to evaluate these measures, the situation of the reduction of CO2 emissions was visualized in each road unit on the digital maps using GIS, and the CO2 emissions before and after the implementation effects of the above nine measures were grasped by t-tests using R language. Based on the evaluation results, it was clear that CO2 emissions are the highest on the main roads in the city center, while the roads with a high reduction of CO2 emissions differed according to each measure. It was also found that all the above nine measures were effective, except for the promotion of eco-drive for small-size automobile. This is because, in the case of small-size automobiles, the diffusion rate of eco-drive did not increase greatly, the reduction effect of CO2 emission was small, and the reduction of CO2 emissions by fuel consumption was low.

2016 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER SCIENCE & EDUCATION (ICCSE), IEEE, 448-453, 2016, Peer-reviwed, The moving images are very effective in explaining how to sew clothes. This study aims to propose a new education method for dress-making utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS) at universities. Specifically, the authors created the contents of moving images as the teaching materials for clothing, and distributed those utilizing LMS. Since there are no PCs for students in most of sewing practical rooms at universities, 67% of students accessed the contents of moving images using PCs and smartphones after coming homes. In order to examine the possibility of LMS adaptation into the formal classes in clothing, the authors conducted a questionnaire survey to the students. More than 90 % of the students had the environment in which they can view the moving images, and about 70% of the students actually accessed them. The authors calculated the correlation coefficient between the number of accesses, attention frequency and work evaluation. As a result, the number of accesses and attention frequency had a negative correlation.

  • Development of AR/VR Navigation System Using Non-Linguistic Information
    Marzieh Aliabadi Farahani; Kayoko Yamamoto
2016 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER SCIENCE & EDUCATION (ICCSE), IEEE, 332-337, 2016, Peer-reviwed, This study aims to develop a navigation system for a wide range of people including foreigners who visit Japan and cannot understand Japanese at all. Though there are already a lot of navigation systems corresponding to many languages, it is impossible to further develop such systems in the same way as before. Therefore, this study demonstrates the originality to use non-linguistic information such as symbols, marks and pictograms, and to supports the tourist excursions by making it possible to collect, accumulate, share and utilize tourist spot information, using mixed AR/VR technologies. The usefulness of this system, especially when used outdoors, can be summarized in the following three points: 1) Reduction of constraints of time and space: Because the system can provide non-linguistic information with or without a recommendation request using AR technology, users can acquire appropriate information anytime, anywhere. 2) Realization of a dynamic real-time situation: By taking account of each user's situation and the information that becomes a topic on Twitter, the system can provide users with information relevant to each situation in real time. 3) Reduction of the burden of information acquisition: Because the system can provide information relevant to the situation at any time using mixed AR/VR technologies, the occasions for users to acquire information via terminals are reduced, enabling them to engage in efficient tourist activities.

  • Social Recommendation GIS for Urban Tourist Spots
    Kayoko Yamamoto; Tsukasa Ikeda
PROCEEDINGS OF 2016 IEEE 18TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING AND COMMUNICATIONS; IEEE 14TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SMART CITY; IEEE 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DATA SCIENCE AND SYSTEMS (HPCC/SMARTCITY/DSS), IEEE, 50-57, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Since the amount of information submitted and made public about tourist spots in urban areas is very large compared to that for regional tourist spots, it is difficult for people who do not have much knowledge of or acquaintance with the places concerned to efficiently obtain information necessary for taking tourist trips. This study aims to develop a social recommendation media GIS (Geographic Information Systems) specially tailored to recommend tourist spots in urban areas. The conclusions of this study are summarized in the following three points. (1) Social recommendation GIS, an information system which integrates a Web-GIS, an SNS (Social Networking Service) and a recommendation system into a single system, was operated in the central part of Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The social recommendation GIS uses a design to make it possible to redesign systems in accordance with target cases. (2) The social recommendation GIS was operated for two months for members of the general public who are more than 18 years old. The total numbers of users was 98, and the number of pieces of information submitted was 232. (3) The web questionnaire to users showed the usefulness of the integration of a Web-GIS, an SNS and a recommendation systems, because the functions of reference and recommendation can be expected to support tourists' excursion behavior. Since the access survey of log data showed that about 35% of accesses were from mobile information terminals, it can be said that the preparation of an optimal interface for such terminals was effective.

  • Visualization of GIS Analytic for Open Big Data in Environmental Science
    Kayoko Yamamoto
2015 International Conference on Cloud Computing and Big Data, IEEE, 201-208, 2015, Peer-reviwed, This study aims to introduce an example of the visualization of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) analytic for open big data in environmental science. This study focuses on the issue that although higher temperatures should be mitigated by sea breezes flowing into inland areas, sea breeze flows are being obstructed by forests of high-rise buildings in coastal areas. Further, using a weather simulation model in addition to GIS, this study quantitatively analyzes the influence which the obstruction of sea breezes by clusters of high-rise buildings has on the urban heat island effect. In weather simulations which use the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model, a group of open big data such as land cover data, constructed from land use data and landform data and weather data, such as atmospheric data and sea surface temperature, are necessary. Therefore, in this study, as weather data and landform data, the WRF default data, that is, FNL (Global Final Analyses) and USGS (the U.S. Geological Survey) data, were used; and as land use data, urban area land use subdivided mesh data for 2009 from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan was used. Analysis was conducted in two stages, and Shiodome of Minato City in the Tokyo Metropolis was selected as the region for analysis.

  • Development and Operation of Social Media GIS for Disaster Risk Management in Japan
    Kayoko Yamamoto
PLANNING SUPPORT SYSTEMS AND SMART CITIES, SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN, 21-39, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Since natural disasters frequently happen all over the world, we must make effective preparations for such disasters. As the implementation of sophisticated computerization expands, the society now benefits from ubiquitous network and cloud computing. Consequently, we can utilize a variety of information systems effectively for disaster reduction measures. Based on the experiences of natural disasters, among a variety of information systems, the roles of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and social media are considered important for collection and transmission of disaster information. Against the above-mentioned backdrop, the present study aims to classify disaster risk management for natural disasters into three stages-normal times, disaster outbreak times, and times of recovery and reconstruction-to introduce the results of development and operation of social media GIS during each of these three stages. The social media GIS targeted residents who were more than 18 years old in the Tama region of Tokyo metropolis and the neighboring area in Japan for two months. Subsequently, the systems were evaluated based on the results of an online questionnaire survey to users, access surveys using log data during operation of the systems, and an analysis of the submitted information. Based on the results of the evaluation, measures for improvement of the development and operation of social media GIS can be summarized into three areas regarding (a) participation of various users and partnership with local communities, (b) usability, and (c) long-term actual operation.

The Society of Socio-Informatics, 3, 1, 17-30, 2014, Peer-reviwed, This study aims to design, develop, operate and evaluate a social media GIS (Geographical Information Systems) specially tailored to mash-up the information that regional residents and local governments provide to support information utilization from normal times to disaster outbreak times in order to promote disaster reduction. The conclusions of this study are summarized in the following three points. (1) Social media GIS, an information system which integrates Web-GIS and SNS in addition to an information classification function into a single system, was conducted in Chofu City, Tokyo. The social media GIS used a design which showed information as semitransparent circles depending on its present location data and contents. This made it propose an information utilization system based on the assumption of disaster outbreak times when information overload happens as well as normal times. (2) The social media GIS was operated for regional residents who are more than 18 years old for seven weeks. Although about 52% of the users were in their twenties, about 36% were aged forty or above. Users submitted and inspected disaster information using both PCs and mobile information terminals. (3) The system was evaluated based on the results of a questionnaire survey to users, an access survey using log data during operation and an analysis of the submitted information. The questionnaire survey showed the usefulness of the system in terms of its operability especially regarding specific functions, and the possibility to provide disaster information mainly for mobile information terminals. Additionally, since it also showed effects of use, we expected that systems will be used according to their purpose. The access survey showed that users continuously accessed the system and 181 pieces of disaster information were distributed throughout the whole city of Chofu.

The Society of Socio-Informatics, 1, 2, 77-92, 2012, Peer-reviwed, This study firstly aims to design and develop a Web-GIS (Geographical Information System) specially tailored to the efficient accumulation, sharing, and communication of regional knowledge by regional residents in regional community. The Web-GIS is a geographical information system which integrates Web-GIS, an SNS (Social Networking Service), and a Wiki in a single system. Secondly, collecting information on regional resources as regional knowledge, the Web-GIS was conducted in the regional community of Chofu city in Tokyo, and was evaluated based on a questionnaire survey to users and a sociometric analysis of log data during operation. The conclusions of this study are summarized in the following three points. (1) The Web-GIS uses a design which ameliorates the three constraints of time, space and human resources, making it possible to design systems in accordance with target cases. After preoperation of the Web-GIS, certain issues were identified in order to redesign it. (2) After operating the Web-GIS to communicate regional knowledge about regional resources in the local community, the system was evaluated based on the results of a questionnaire survey to users in order to identify improvements. The arrangement of transmitted information and display of the information on each user's screen were pointed out as improvements to the system. (3) Based on a sociometric analysis, communication among users was verified. It was also clear that women communicated with more users than men and that a community could be guessed to be built among specified users over the course of time.

Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 74, 5, 657-662, 2011, Peer-reviwed, In suburban areas, urbanization advanced in accordance with the development of transportation network and it has a possibility of making the competition of urban area and other lane uses such as farmland and forest aggravate further. This is connected with the problems such as the deviation between land use control and land use. This study aims to evaluate land use controls in the land use master plan by analyzing deviations in land use from the viewpoint of urban areas distribution in the Okinawa Main Island. In this study, GIS as spatial analysis tools should be effective. The main results of this study are as follows: (1) In the urbanization control areas of the Naha extensive city planning area, especially in the non-duplication areas and the duplication areas with agricultural districts in the suburb of Naha, and the ones with national park district in Itoman, it is important to reconsider zoning ordinances. (2) In the white areas of the Nago and Motobu city planning areas, it is necessary to adopt use districts in both the non-duplication areas and the duplication areas with agricultural districts along the main national roads on the seaside. Also in the Chubu extensive city planning area, it is mainly necessary to adopt use districts and zoning ordinances in both the non-duplication areas and the duplication areas with agricultural districts.

Journal of Scio-Informatics, The Society of Socio-Informatics, 4, 1, 49-62, 2011, Peer-reviwed, This study aims to propose and implement a Web-GIS (Geographic Information Systems) based outdoor education program as environmental education for elementary schools which is then evaluated by users. The conclusion of this study can be summarized in the following three points. (1) An eight-step outdoor education program based on Web-GIS was proposed as a "second school" for elementary schools and was then implemented before being evaluated by users (teachers, instructors, students and their parents). (2) The program generally received a good evaluation. However, many students and their parents gave extremely negative evaluations for degree of discovery and degree of interest respectively in the questionnaire conducted after the "second school". Teachers' evaluations showed an intention to continue to operate the program in a positive manner and to pinpoint the issues concerning the use of Web-GIS as teaching materials. (3) Based on the results of evaluation by users, two issues to improve the outdoor education program were determined. One concerns the Web-GIS based outdoor education program and the other is related to the use of Web-GIS.

23, 2, 47-58, 2010, Peer-reviwed, This study aims to evaluate measures against the Urban Heat Island (UHI) from the viewpoint of artificial exhaust heat of road traffic using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the Tokyo 23-Ward Area where the degree of UHI is tremendously strong. We created a GIS database that reflects road traffic conditions and calculated the volume of artificial exhaust heat of road traffic to evaluate measures against the UHI. The findings of this study can be summarized in the following three points. (1) The volume of artificial exhaust heat of moving objects is more than that of stationary objects. On intra-highways and beltways where traffic density and speed are high, the volume of artificial exhaust heat of moving objects is particularly high. By vehicle type, the volume of artificial exhaust heat of passenger cars and small freight cars is especially high, and it is highest in the daytime on weekdays. (2) Although there are differences in degree, the measures regarding moving objects such as exhaust heat suppression by fuel burning, facilitation of traffic flow by road development for bicycles and walkers, beltway development, and enhancement of traffic signal limitation are effective in reducing the volume of artificial exhaust heat. However, roads with a high reduction ratio in the volume of artificial exhaust heat differ according to the measures taken. (3) Measures regarding stationary objects such as special pavements and promotion of high energy consumption efficiency in equipment result in high reduction ratios (about 30%) in the volume of artificial exhaust heat and can be widely effective.

  • Conservation and Management of Water Environment in Metropolitan Areas - Focusing on the Development of Sewerage Systems and Waterfront Space
    Kayoko Yamamoto
PROGRESS IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, VOL II, PTS A AND B, SCIENCE PRESS BEIJING, 2, 954-965, 2009, Peer-reviwed, This paper aims to show the true state of the conservation and management of water environment in the world's major metropolitan areas by focusing on "sewerage systems" as well as on "rivers" and "ports and coastal zones" which are strongly affected by development of sewerage system. These three aspects constitute the three most important points of urban water environment, and to introduce some leading examples of successful urban development in the major metropolitan areas, chiefly based on the results of literature research as well as field surveys (2001-2008) and interviews (2001-2008). In the world's major metropolitan areas, the need for the development of sewerage systems has been almost fulfilled and their endeavor to conserve and manage water environment has entered a new stage where the improvement of urban rivers as well as of ports and coastal zones is called for. Especially in Japan, behind this development are the amendments of river laws in the later half of the 1990s that have brought increased attention to rivers as precious waterfront space in urban areas and enhanced public awareness of the importance of basin management along the water flow from forests through rivers into the sea.

Proceedings of the Second IASTED International Conference on Water Resources Management, ACTA PRESS ANAHEIM, CD-ROM, 142-149, 2007, Peer-reviwed, This paper aims to show the true state of the conservation and management of urban water environment in Japan by focusing on the two most important aspects of urban water environment, i.e. sewerage systems and urban rivers, and to introduce some leading examples of successful urban development utilizing the water environment unique to Japan. The conservation and management of urban water environment in Japan has entered into the stage of urban river improvement now that the need for the development of sewerage systems has been almost fulfilled. Behind this development is the amendment of the River Law in 1997.
Not only "water" but also "greenery" is among the most important components of the environment in general, that is, not limited to that of urban areas. It is thus necessary to form a network of water and greenery so as to secure habitat space for diverse forms of life. To this end it is hoped that "water and greenery networks" should be built even within urban areas, and environment improvement should be carried out in urban areas not only as a dwelling place for human beings but also as a habitat space for diverse forms of life.

The City Planning Institute of Japan, 5, 2, 47-51, 2006, This study focuses on the town of Ise Kawasaki in an attempt to understand the interrelationship between unique features of the management the Seta River basin and a community design working to harness the cultural environment provided by its history as a port town and wholesale district on the Seta River. The results show that these two apparently heterogeneous activities are both deeply involved with the common regional resources of the Seta River, and that maintaining harmony between the two is important. Moreover, such efforts have the potential to produce tourist attractions not through community design emphasizing history and culture, but also through the river basin management centering on river repair and water quality clean-up.

The City Planning Institute of Japan, 3, 2, 39-42, 2004, The decline of specific local industries together with the dual effects of depopulation and an aging society have led to a loss in many rural areas of economical and social vigor. In an attempt to redress this situation, many regions in Japan are trying to develop a variety of enterprises aimed at regional reactivation and regional promotion. In recent years, many regions have been making active use of the Internet to transmit information about their local areas, making it much easier for people to obtain local information on other areas outside their own. This dissemination of regional information has led in turn to many cases of interchange between residents of regions with different characteristics. In this study, I look at one such interchange between local residents in different regions, the example of the town of Takashima in Shiga Prefecture, which is engaged in a regional promotion scheme through urban area and farm village exchange enterprises, and try and grasp its defining features.

The Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture, 63, 2, 141-151, 1999, Peer-reviwed, Recenlty, it is widely recognized the needs to keep natural environment in urban areas, and these attempts are realized in various fields Moreover, the significance to recover natural environment in artificial environment in urban areas depends on not only environmental cosevervation but also residents' usual contact with this. In this recent tendency ecological housings getting supplied and the main aim is to promote the residents' contact with natural environment. In ecological housings, though the residents can usually contact with natural environmen in their neighborhood, they have to foster nad maitain the plants by theirselves. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the elements to promote residents' relations with natural environment focasing on the biotope in ecological housing in the suburban area in National Capital Region. The main results are as follows; 1) Though the residents positively use and maintain the biotope, the maintenances mainly depend on the activities of nighbourhood association. 2) It is necessary to make the rules to use the biotope and include the maintenace of the biotope into the activities of nighbourhood association. 3) There are some problems about the biotope, but it leads to promote the residents' contacts with this But, by making the rules and the systems to use and maintain the biotop, the residents will contact with this much frequently than ever.

This study aims to outline the effects of advanced computerization on spatial information science, and discusses its possibilities citing examples of the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) in reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Based on these results, this study clarifies the future prospects for the fusion of Socio-Informatics and spatial information science. Studies using GIS functions for database development or information analysis have conventionally been the mainstream of spatial information science. However, in recent years, GIS functions for information sharing and transmission have come into frequent use with the promotion of advanced computerization, and social media GIS have been actively developed by combining social media and Web-GIS. Moreover, in order to discuss the possibilities of spatial information science, the development of regional information databases and social media GIS have been proposed as concrete uses of GIS in reconstruction after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Based on the results of these examinations, as a suggestion for the development of spatial information science in consideration of the accumulated academic achievements of Socio-Informatics, this study raises the issue of how to choose appropriate spatial information and add it on to digital maps in formats that are intelligible for most website visitors. As a conclusion, in the field of fusion between Socio-Informatics and spatial information science, based on their different characteristics, this study points out the necessity of conducting research on information systems that conform to the purpose of each form of use and are usable in the real world., The Society of Socio-Informatics, 2012, 1, 89-96, Japanese, Introduction other, 2187-2775, 110009553337, AA12586577

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Kanazawa University, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), , 19H01380
