Journal of pharmaceutical health care and sciences, 10, 1, 62-62, 02 Oct. 2024, True, BACKGROUND: Concerns persist regarding the potential reduction in driving performance due to taking second-generation antihistamines or performing hands-free calling. Previous studies have indicated a potential risk to driving performance under an emergency event when these two factors are combined, whereas a non-emergency event was operated effectively. Currently, there is a lack of a discriminative index capable of detecting the potential risks of driving performance impairment. This study aims to investigate the relationship between driving performance and eye movements under combined conditions of taking second-generation antihistamines and a calling task, and to assess the usefulness of eye movement measurements as a discriminative index for detecting potential risks of driving performance impairment. METHODS: Participants engaged in a simulated driving task, which included a calling task, both under taking or not taking second-generation antihistamines. Driving performance and eye movements were monitored during both emergency and non-emergency events, assessing their correlation between driving performance and eye movements. The study further evaluated the usefulness of eye movement as a discriminative index for potential driving impairment risk through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: In the case of a non-emergency event, no correlation was observed between driving performance and eye movement under the combined conditions. Conversely, a correlation was observed during an emergency event. The ROC analysis, conducted to assess the discriminative index capability of eye movements in detecting the potential risk of driving performance impairment, demonstrated a high discriminative power, with an area under the curve of 0.833. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show the correlation between driving performance and eye movements under the concurrent influence of second-generation antihistamines and a calling task, suggesting the usefulness of eye movement measurement as a discriminant index for detecting potential risks of driving performance impairment.

  • Learning and predicting the unknown class using evidential deep learning
    Akihito Nagahama
Lead, Scientific Reports, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 13, 1, 09 Sep. 2023, Peer-reviwed, Abstract

In practical deep-learning applications, such as medical image analysis, autonomous driving, and traffic simulation, the uncertainty of a classification model’s output is critical. Evidential deep learning (EDL) can output this uncertainty for the prediction; however, its accuracy depends on a user-defined threshold, and it cannot handle training data with unknown classes that are unexpectedly contaminated or deliberately mixed for better classification of unknown class. To address these limitations, I propose a classification method called modified-EDL that extends classical EDL such that it outputs a prediction, i.e. an input belongs to a collective unknown class along with a probability. Although other methods handle unknown classes by creating new unknown classes and attempting to learn each class efficiently, the proposed m-EDL outputs, in a natural way, the “uncertainty of the prediction” of classical EDL and uses the output as the probability of an unknown class. Although classical EDL can also classify both known and unknown classes, experiments on three datasets from different domains demonstrated that m-EDL outperformed EDL on known classes when there were instances of unknown classes. Moreover, extensive experiments under different conditions established that m-EDL can predict unknown classes even when the unknown classes in the training and test data have different properties. If unknown class data are to be mixed intentionally during training to increase the discrimination accuracy of unknown classes, it is necessary to mix such data that the characteristics of the mixed data are as close as possible to those of known class data. This ability extends the range of practical applications that can benefit from deep learning-based classification and prediction models.

  • Detection of leader–follower combinations frequently observed in mixed traffic with weak lane-discipline
Akihito Nagahama; Takahiro Wada; Daichi Yanagisawa; Katsuhiro Nishinari
Lead, Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, Elsevier BV, 570, 125789-125789, May 2021, Peer-reviwed, We quantitatively clarified that, in an actual mixed traffic, the distributions of the types of leaders and followers for each vehicle type have biases toward the distributions predicted based on the number of each type of vehicle. Vehicular traffic in some countries is heterogeneous, having weak lane-discipline, i.e., 2D mixed traffic. Previous studies have clarified that the order of vehicle types in a vehicle platoon influences the traffic properties. It has been further suggested that a certain vehicle type, e.g., motorcycles, exhibits herding or grouping behavior. However, such grouping phenomena have not been quantitatively investigated. In this study, we aim to extract the vehicle combinations frequently observed in an actual 2D mixed traffic. By utilizing video footage that was shot overlooking a road in Mumbai, India, the extended vehicle order, i.e., leader-follower network, was detected first. Then, we compared the observed distribution of leader-follower combinations and the estimated distribution based on expectations calculated using the number of each type of vehicle, which revealed discrepancies between these two distributions in the leader-follower network. For example, motorcycles more frequently became leaders and followers of themselves than estimated. Moreover, they less frequently had leader-follower relationships with other types of vehicles. Specifically, auto-rickshaws and motorcycles are mutually exclusive. Based on these obtained results, two groups appear to exist: a group of motorcycles and another group consisting of auto-rickshaws, cars, and heavy vehicles. Our results implied that segregation phenomena comprises ''isolation,'' as well as filtering, gathering, and dispersion, as proposed in a previous study. The results also showed that not only size but even agility (i.e., quickness in longitudinal acceleration or deceleration) and speed play different roles for each type of vehicle in the respective segregation process, though the cause of the mutual exclusiveness between motorcycles and auto-rickshaws is still unclear. From the asymmetry of the frequency of leader-follower relationships, we proposed two types of preference, i.e., ''potentially desiring'' and ''unintentionally attracted.'' (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. • Car-following characteristics of various vehicle types in respective driving phases

Lead, Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 8, 1, 22-48, 2020, Peer-reviwed, The dynamics of mixed traffic were analysed by examining the driving features of various vehicles based on their car-following behaviours in a test-driving circuit. By applying decision tree analysis to the observed data, we successfully compared the acceleration, velocity difference and distance gap of different vehicles during driving trials and quantitatively extracted the features of these physical values from the respective driving phases. Our investigation resulted in a short-distance gap for motorcycles in the steady phase, while a difference in the distance gap between cars and trucks appeared in the early deceleration phase. We also obtained the characteristic behaviours of these vehicle types in different driving phases. Our findings indicate that the car-following characteristics of various types of vehicles are affected by the recognition of vehicle agility. Furthermore, we propose the necessary model parameters for replicating these features in different driving phases.

Lead, PHYSICA A-STATISTICAL MECHANICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 483, 503-516, Oct. 2017, Peer-reviwed, The analysis of the microscopic view of mixed traffic offers a basis for resolving traffic jams which are inhomogeneous due to several types of vehicles. In this study, we research the dependence of driving characteristics upon vehicle order in a platoon. By focusing particularly upon the manner in which the driving characteristics of a follower are affected by both their own vehicle type and that of their leader, we measured the trajectories of platoons comprising two vehicles selected from motorcycles, passenger cars, and trucks on a test course. Analysis based on vehicle order showed that the vehicle types of both the leader and the follower as well as the leader's driving characteristics affected the velocity, acceleration, deceleration, operational delay of followers, and the distance gap between leaders and followers in different ways. In addition, we investigated the factors affecting driving characteristics by multiple regression analysis. We revealed that the operational delay and the maximum distance gap tend to be large when the length of leaders is large. Furthermore, as long as a follower can follow, we need not consider vehicle types among the parameters determining maximum velocity in car-following models. The vehicle types of the leader and the follower should be considered to determine maximum acceleration. When determining maximum deceleration, the vehicle types of the follower should be considered. 2012 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Workshop Series on Innovative Wireless Power Transmission: Technologies, Systems, and Applications, IMWS-IWPT 2012 - Proceedings, 29-32, 2012, Peer-reviwed, The objective of the present study is to develop a microwave power transmitting system for a Mars observation airplane. A wide-ranging continual Mars observation is becoming important for understanding physical properties of Mars. We suggested a transmitting system with a magnetron-based phased array. In this paper, we conducted auto tracking experiments and confirmed position detection error of the auto tracking system caused declines of received power. We also demonstrated transmitting power control and confirmed that the power control provided approximately uniform DC voltage for a ground experiment airplane. © 2012 IEEE.

We suggest a phased array antenna composed of "power-variable phase-controlled magnetrons (PVPCM)" for the transmitting system. We confirmed the PVPCM had proper response speed to chase the airplane. We constructed PVPCMs for a phased array antenna through designing an integrator for a phase locked loop in the PVPCM, and we realized a stable power variation of the PVPCM. We confirmed realization of a phased array antenna with PVPCMs and transmitting power control. © 2011 IEEE.

Oral presentation, Japanese, 第49回 知能システムシンポジウム, 公益社団法人 計測自動制御学会 システム・情報部門, This paper aims to reducing traffic congestion and propose a method to quantitatively evaluate a vehicle order based on the traffic flow rate and the Stability of it, and an optimization method of transitioning from an arbitrary order to ideal order of same condition for reducing traffic congestion rate by Evolutionary Computation, Vehicle Order Optimization based on EA and Search Graph-Structured List(VOO-EASDL). From the results of experiments, the following implications have been revealed: (1) The proposed evaluation method can accurately evaluate usefulness of a vehicle order in reducing traffic congestion. (2) VOO-EASDL can output the transition method even in the case that is impossible to reach by simply exchange of the improved point., Domestic conference

  • Additional information to share intentions between a driver and shared control system
    羽鳥由芽乃; 長濱章仁; 田中健次
Oral presentation, Japanese, 第49回 知能システムシンポジウム, 公益社団法人 計測自動制御学会 システム・情報部門, As the development of automated driving technology progresses, shared control that can contribute to solving problems in both AD and ADAS has been proposed. To solve the discrepancy between the intentions of drivers and the system in shared control, we examined the effect of presenting the system-recognized dangerous objects to the driver. The results showed that the presentation of the dangerous object improved the driver's understanding of the system's intentions and increased the trust in the system only when the system was correct. This paper also examined the effect of introducing a button that allows the driver to inform that the system is wrong., Domestic conference
