Two-fold addition reaction of silylene to C₆₀: structural and electronic properties of a bis-adduct

Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, Beilstein Institut, 20, 1179-1188, 22 May 2024, Peer-reviwed, The addition reaction of C₆₀ with silylene 1, a silicon analog of carbene, yielded the corresponding bis-adduct 3. The structure of 3 was determined by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis, representing the first example of a crystal structure of a silirane (silacyclopropane) derivative of fullerenes. Electrochemical measurements confirmed that the redox potentials of 3 are shifted cathodically compared to those of the parent mono-adduct 2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided the basis for the electronic properties of compound 3.

Phase transitions of organic crystals caused by conformational changes of alkyl chains : observation of intermediate stages with a temperature-resolved single crystal diffraction method

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Very few studies have been done on the detailed structural changes during transitions, because of the crystal damage and difficulties of intensity measurements for single crystal structure analyses at various temperatures. Recently, temperature-resolved structure analyses became possible through the development of diffractometers with two-dimensional detectors. Crystals of acridin-N-oxyl derivatives with a long alkyl chain (CnH2n+1, n=12, 13) showed that the first order. In the case of the n=13, the single crystalline states were kept during the transition. Structure analyses were carried out every 2 K during the transition from 264 to 252 K and at 295, 280, 273, 244 and 100 K. Crystals of a acylurea derivative, iso-C_5H_<11>-CO-NH-CO-NH-C_2H_5 showed a phase transition at 367K (mp=378 K) and also kept single-crystalline-state during the transition. Structure analyses were performed at 98, 298, 328 K and in the range of 348 ~ 374 K every 2 K. For Crystals ClCH_2-CO-NH-CO-NH-C_5H_<11>, powder diffraction method was performed because of crystalline damage. In these crystals, intermediate stages and mechanism of phase transitions caused by the conformational changes of alkyl groups induced by the thermal expansion was revealed. A pentacoordinated boron compound bearing 1, 8-dimethoxyanthracene and dithiocatecholato ligands showed the second-order phase transition, Pnma at high temperature phase and P2_12_12_1 at low temperature phase. Temperature-dependent structure analyses were performed every 2 K during phase transition. Following the thermal expansion, the catecholate moieties begin to librate even from 120 K and become disordered at 203 K. Intermolecular energies were calculated using simple force field potentials for the neighboring molecular pairs at each temperature. Distributions of Electron-Densities of Organic Magnetic Crystals

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), The electron-density distributions of organic radical crystals and transition-metal complexes have been investigated using X-ray diffraction data measured at 100 K.Deformation electron-density distributions were calculated from the structure factors refined by the multipole expansion method. 1. Some of the 4-Ar-CH=N-TEMPO radicals (TEMPO=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidyl-1-oxyl), showed intermolecular ferromagnetic interactions at an extremely low temperature. In these crystals, the ferromagnetic interactions are transferred through O--- H van der Waals' interactions of beta-H atoms of the neighboring TEMPO rings. From the electron-density distributions, it was suggested that the unpaired electron of the 0 radical atom was located on the of the N-O bond. The beta-H atoms of the neighboring TEMPO rings contact with the 0 atom from the directions to avoid the lonepairs of the O atom and to prefer to the pi*-orbital. 2. An unusually long radical N-O bond and a short intermolecular & O-O contact were observed in the crystals of 6,6-bis-(p-tolyl)-5,6-dihydro-phenanthridin-N-oxyl from the batch I . In the D-maps, significant peaks were observed on the O-O line. From the detailed refinements, a disordered structure, which contained a radical N-O bond and N-O-H bond forming an intermolecular O-H O hydrogen bond, were obtained, In the crystals from the batch II, the molecules showed the geometry of typical radicals, not showed a disordered structure. It is very interesting that the structure of the pure radical crystals are isomorphous with those constructed by the hydrogen-bonding. 3. The electron density distributions of [Cu(II)(NO_3) _2 (pm) _3] (1) (ferromagnetic interaction) and [Cu(II)(NO_3)_2(pm)_2(H_2O)_2] (2) (antiferromagnetic interaction) (pm=pyrimidine) were investigated. The Cu atom in 1 is coordinated square pyramidally by two 0 atoms and three N atoms. In 2, it is coordinated octahedrally by four 0 atoms and two N atoms. For 2, six peaks are observed around the Cu atom, which show 3d electrons. Electron densities for lone-pairs of ligands are also clearly observed., 08454180

Structure Analysis of Unstable Crystals using Rapid X-ray Measurement System

Rapid collection of X-ray intensity data is especially important for determining structures of unstable crystal. A new type of X-ray diffractometer (DIP-3000) has been developed with Imaging plate as a two-dimensional detector, a kappa-goniometer and a mu-axis in order to measure diffraction intensities from a single crystal within several hours. 2. A performance test and comparison of structures using a four-circle diffractometer indicated that the accuracy of the intensity data taken with our new rapid X-ray measurement system are reliable and the system can work quite satisfactorily as a tool of ordinary crystallography and very useful for unstable crystals. Total time for data collection was about 2 or 3 hours for reach crystals, on the contrast to about 3 or 4 days on the four-circle diffractometer. Although R values are larger by about 0.01 than those of four-circle diffractometer, bond lengths and angles obtained from this equipment and a four-circle diffractometer agree quite well within the estimated standard deviations. 3. Using this equipment we could successfully determined the crystal structures of several new metal-carbene complexes whose crystals were very unstable. It is revealed that this equipment is very useful for crystals having a large unit cell. Intensity data could be measured within 7-10 hours, on the contrast to about 10 or 14 days on the four-circle diffractometer. 4. Dynamic structural transformations and molecular motion in organic crystals were also investigated using this equipment and the mechanism of thermal rearrangement in 2,4-dinitrophenyl-o-anisidine was revealed., 04504002

The Distribution of Charge Density of Hypervalent Organic Sulfur Compounds

Electron-density distributions of two tetraazathiapentalene derivatives, I and II,with typical hypervalent S-N bonds of 1.90 - 1.96 A were investigated in order to shed light on the character of hypervalent bonds and to compare electronic features of these sulfur atoms. Electron-density distributions of dibenzothiophene derivative, III,with a weak intramolecular S・・・S contact of 3.012 A were also investigated. Intensities of X-ray diffraction were measured at 143K up to 2rhetamax=100ﾟ (88ﾟ for III) and the structure refinements were performed using multipole expansion atomic scattering factors up to the hexadecapole expansion for S atom. In model-deformation maps of the tetraazathiapentalene planes, positive electron densities along S-N bonds are observed near the nitrogen atoms, not in the center of the bonds. The net atomic charges derived from the multipole refinement suggest a polarized character of S-N bond. For each compound, two lone-pair electron densities are observed in the section perpendicular to the pentalene plane through the S-C bonds. The angles of C-S-L,C-S-L' and L-S-L' (L and L' = peaks of lone-pair densities) are about 120ﾟ.Structure around the hypervalent S atom is a trigonal bipyramid with equatorial sp^2 hybrid of S-C bond and lone-pair electrons and apical polarized S-N bonds. In III lone-pair electron densities are observed perpendicular to the thiophene ring and the C-S-C sulfide planes. Lobes of lone-pair electrons of two sulfide groups are orthonormal with each other to avoid a steric hindrance between lone pairs of two S atoms., 03453161
