  • Design and Evaluation of an Optical Broadcast-and-Select Network Architecture With a Centralized Multicarrier Light Source
Yueping Cai; Eiji Oki; Motoharu Matsuura; Naoto Kishi; Tetsuya Miki
JOURNAL OF LIGHTWAVE TECHNOLOGY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 27, 21, 4897-4906, Nov. 2009, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents the design and evaluation of our optical broadcast-and-select wavelength-routed network architecture that uses a centralized multicarrier light source (C-MCLS). The large number of optical carriers/wavelengths generated by the C-MCLS are distributed to all edge nodes (ENs), which select and modulate wavelengths to realize upstream transmission. To utilize wavelengths efficiently, we introduce a framework for wavelength allocation and selection (WAS). Both static and dynamic schemes are adopted for WAS and their implementations are shown. By using fixed or tunable band pass filters and periodic arrayed waveguide grating demultiplexers, wavelengths are selected and utilized by ENs in a static or dynamic manner. After considering the design parameters used in the implementations, wavelength allocation procedures are described. We evaluate the cost, power consumption and network performance of the proposed network. Numerical results show that it offers greatly reduced cost and power consumption compared to the conventional one when the number of required access wavelengths at EN becomes large. We delineate its applicable areas through cost comparisons. Blocking probabilities of static and dynamic schemes are analyzed to evaluate network performance. Numerical results show that by choosing appropriate design parameters, the dynamic scheme offers about 25% increase in admissible offered load under the specified blocking probability, compared to the static scheme. This indicates that the dynamic scheme makes the proposed network more robust against traffic fluctuations.

  • Nonreservation Fair Bandwidth Allocation Based on Dynamic Replacement in Optical Burst Ring Networks

JOURNAL OF OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 1, 5, 416-427, Oct. 2009, Peer-reviwed, This paper proposes a real-time allocation scheme for photonic networks that use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) technologies in the backbone and ring regional networks, respectively. A frame that is used for transferring data and control information in a ring regional network takes only one round to complete data allocation processing, instead of two rounds as required by the prior reservation scheme, so that data can be transmitted immediately. The objective is to provide max-min fair share in terms of throughput with just one round. If no free space is left on the frame, the proposed scheme allows a group (some) of the newly requested data to replace some of the already allocated data to provide max-min fair share, in terms of throughput. Data replacement and defragmentation are processed in the optical domain. Simulations show that the proposed scheme maintains max-min fair share even in unbalanced traffic scenarios. The complexity of defragmentation depends on the number of delay lines needed to regenerate the original data groups. The maximum number of delay lines is determined.

  • Optical Drop-Add-Drop Network Architecture with Centralized Multi-Carrier Light Source
Yueping Cai; Motoharu Matsuura; Eiji Oki; Naoto Kishi; Tetsuya Miki
IEEE COMMUNICATIONS LETTERS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 13, 9, 700-702, Sep. 2009, Peer-reviwed, This letter proposes an optical drop-add-drop network architecture with a centralized multi-carrier light source (C-MCLS) for regional and metro network applications., In the drop-add-drop network, optical carriers generated by the G MCLS are dropped at the source nodes and used for uplink transmission. Data are added to the network after external modulations of the carriers. Data are then dropped at the destination nodes. The reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) at each node is not only used to add and drop data, but also to drop carriers, which eliminates the distributed laser diodes needed by the conventional network. Network cost analysis and numerical results show that it offers significantly lower network cost compared to the conventional network if the total number of used wavelengths in the network is large. We evaluate its optical performance through an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) analysis. We show its applicable network size in terms of fiber span length and the number of nodes under a specified bit error rate (BER) when changing the OSNR of the C-MCLS.

  • Dependable Networks as a Paradigm for Network Innovation
    Tetsuya Miki
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E92B, 1, 2-8, Jan. 2009, Peer-reviwed, In past, dependable networks meant minimizing network outages or the impact of the outages. However, over the decade, major network services have shifted from telephone and data transmission to Internet and to mobile communication, where higher layer services with a variety of contents are provided. Reviewing these backgrounds of network development, the importance of the dependability of higher layer network services are pointed out. Then, the main aspects to realize the dependability are given for lower, middle and higher layer network services. In addition, some particular issues for dependable networks are described.

It enables all network nodes access a large number of optical carriers in a cost-effective manner through dynamic optical broadcast and select. Cost analysis and numerical results show that it greatly reduces the light source cost compared with the conventional one, as the number of required access wavelengths at network nodes becomes large. We also show its cost-effective areas in different cases of cost calculation. The obtained results indicate that it is very promising for future regional/metro networks, which demand a large number of wavelengths.

  • A network architecture with high availability for real-time premium traffic over the internet
    Mitsuo Hayasaka; Tetsuya Miki
JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT, SPRINGER, 16, 2, 201-221, Jun. 2008, Peer-reviwed, Real-time traffic will be a predominant traffic type in the next generation networks, and networks with 100% reliability and availability will be required by real-time premium traffic. It is believed that QoS guarantees could be better provided by connection oriented networks such as Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS). These connection oriented networks are more vulnerable to network failure. Conventional path protection methods perform re-routing to cope with this. However, re-routing always causes packet losses and results in service outage. These losses are bursty in nature and highly degrade the QoS of the real-time premium traffic. Thus, 100% availability cannot be achieved by conventional methods. The novel path protection proposed in this paper recovers the bursty packet losses due to re-routing by using forward error correction (FEC) path. Therefore, it can provide network architecture with no service outage for such traffic. The numerical results show that the proposed method can achieve a very high availability for real-time premium traffic in future IP/MPLS networks.

  • A seamless handoff scheme with access point load balance for real-time services support in 802.11 wireless LANs
Thavisak Manodham; Luis Loyola; Tetsuya Miki
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E91B, 5, 1463-1471, May 2008, Peer-reviwed, IEEE 802.11 wirelesses LANs (WLANs) have been rapidly deployed in enterprises, public areas, and households. Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and similar applications are now commonly used in mobile devices over wireless networks. Recent works have improved the quality of service (QoS) offering higher data rates to support various kinds of real-time applications. However, besides the need for higher data rates, seamless handoff and load balancing among APs are key issues that must be addressed in order to continue supporting real-time services across wireless LANs and providing fair services to all users. In this paper, we introduce a novel access point (AP) with two transceivers that improves network efficiency by supporting seamless handoff and traffic load balancing in a wireless network. In our proposed scheme, the novel AP uses the second transceiver to scan and find neighboring STAs in the transmission range and then sends the results to neighboring APs, which compare and analyze whether or not the STA should perform a handoff. The initial results from our simulations show that the novel AP module is more effective than the conventional scheme and a related work in terms of providing a handoff process with low latency and sharing traffic load with neighbor APs.

  • A novel wireless positioning system for seamless internet connectivity based on the WLAN infrastructure
Thavisak Manodham; Luis Loyola; Tetsuya Miki
WIRELESS PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, SPRINGER, 44, 3, 295-309, Feb. 2008, Peer-reviwed, Nowadays, several positioning systems are available for outdoor localization, such as the global positioning system (GPS), assisted GPS (A-GPS), and other systems working on cellular networks, for example, time difference of arrival (TDOA), angle of arrival (AOA) and enhanced observed time difference of arrival (E-OTD). However, with the increasing use of mobile computing devices and an expansion of wireless local area networks (WLANs), there is a growing interest in indoor wireless positioning systems based on the WLAN infrastructure. Wireless positioning systems (WPS) based on this infrastructure can be used for indoor localization to determine the position of mobile users. In this paper, we present a novel wireless positioning system, based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, using a novel access point (AP) with two transceivers to improve the performance of WPS in terms of accuracy of the location estimation and to avoid service connectivity interruption. In our proposed system, the novel AP uses the second transceiver to find information from neighboring mobile stations (STAs) in the transmission range and then sends information in advance to associated APs, which estimate the location of the STA based on an internal database. We also use a TDOA technique to estimate the location of the STA when there is not enough information in the database (in this case, the STA moves into a new area where the system has not run the calibration phase). Using TDOA, the database can be generated and updated automatically. The initial results from our simulations show that the proposed system provides higher accuracy of location estimation than other related work and does not interrupt the Internet connection for end users in contrast with other proposed schemes.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90B, 4, 788-798, Apr. 2007, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents sector based flooding (SBF) and adaptive sector-based flooding (ASBF) that are flooding methods for mobile ad hoc networks using position information. SBF, which divides the communication area of a sender node-into sectors, allows only the node nearest to a sector representative position in each sector to rebroadcast a packet. SBF is divided into two methods, SBF-1 and SBF-2; the difference is the number of criteria used to decide whether to rebroadcast or to drop the packet. In ASBF, each node selects a flooding method from among SBF-1, SBF-2, and pure flooding, depending on its local node density. The node density is obtained from the distance between the sector representative position and its nearest node. Simulation results show that SBF reduces the number of packet transmissions generated in flooding and ASBF has high packet reachability with few packet transmissions.

Motoharu Matsuura; Naoto Kishi; Tetsuya Miki
JOURNAL OF LIGHTWAVE TECHNOLOGY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 25, 1, 38-45, Jan. 2007, Peer-reviwed, An all-optical wavelength converter with a large wavelength hopping range is proposed and demonstrated. This converter consists of multistage cascaded wavelength converters using semiconductor optical amplifiers each with different gain band. Each of the cascaded wavelength converters enables us to perform both noninverted (NIV) and inverted (IV) operations. Conversion performance is compared at NIV and IV operations in terms of static characteristics as a function of input/output power of the converter. While good conversion performances are achieved at both operations, the IV wavelength conversion has better cascadability to obtain a high-quality converted signal for the cascaded scheme. Moreover, signal amplitude regeneration is demonstrated by repeating the IV wavelength conversion. Finally, we successfully demonstrate, for the first time, ultrawideband wavelength conversion, including over 300-nm wavelength hopping to the shorter wavelength side with a triple-stage cascaded wavelength converter.

  • A connection-oriented network architecture with guaranteed QoS for future real-time applications over the Internet
    M Gamage; M Hayasaka; T Miki
COMPUTER NETWORKS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 50, 8, 1130-1144, Jun. 2006, Peer-reviwed, The QoS provided by today's best effort Internet is not good enough, especially for real-time interactive traffic categorized as Premium Traffic (PT). It is believed that QoS guarantees could be better provided by connection-oriented networks such as IP/MPLS. However, these connection-oriented networks are inherently more prone to network failures. Failures of connection-oriented MPLS can be broadly classified into two types namely: link/path failures and degraded failures. Degraded failures that account for about 50% of total failures are detected by the timers maintained at the control plane peers. The control plane and the data plane of IP/MPLS packet networks are logically separated and therefore a failure in the control plane should not immediately disconnect the communications in the data plane. The Virtual Path Hopping (VPH) concept in this study distinguishes these two types of failures and avoids the disconnections of communications in the data plane due to degraded failures. Thereby it reduces the number of failures in the data plane. Computer simulations were performed and the results indicate that VPH is a proactive technique that minimizes failures in the data plane. The proposed Dynamic Virtual Path Allocation (DVPA) algorithm improves the availability of the connection-oriented networks by overcoming link/path failures, especially for PT, without compromising the network resource utilization efficiency. Comprehensive simulations were performed to evaluate the DVPA algorithm and the results show the improvements that DVPA can achieve. Therefore implementation of the DVPA algorithm in conjunction with VPH would improve the reliability and availability aspects of QoS in connection-oriented IP/MPLS packet networks. • Absolute and proportional guarantees in enhancing class-based service architectures

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E89B, 4, 1239-1251, Apr. 2006, Peer-reviwed, Supporting Quality of Service (QoS) over the Internet is a very important issue and many mechanism have been already devised or are under way towards achieving this goal. One of the most important approaches is the class-based architecture, which provides a scalable mechanism for QoS support in a TCP/IP network. Class-based service differentiation can be realized without resource reservation, admission control and traffic policing. However, the resulting services are only relative. While it is, in principle, not feasible to provision for absolute guarantees without admission control and/or traffic policing, such a service can be reasonably well emulated using adaptive rate allocation at the link scheduler of routers. In this paper, we propose mechanism for link scheduler of router that achieve emulated absolute and other relative guarantees using dynamic weighted fair queueing (DWFQ) combining with class packet dropping. The weights of DWFQ are frequently adjusted to current load conditions and based on prediction of realistic class traffic. These mechanisms can realize many approaches to QoS guarantees and class-based differentiation.

  • A novel AP for improving the performance of wireless LANs supporting VoIP
    Thavisak Manodham; Tetsuya Miki
Journal of Networks, Academy Publisher, 1, 4, 41-48, 2006, Peer-reviwed, ecently, wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standard have become popular and widely used, and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) is one of the most promising technologies to be used in mobile devices over wireless networks. Up-to-date, new technologies have improved, providing a high data rate to support various kinds of real time applications. However, besides the need for higher data rates, seamless handoff is another important issue to be addressed in order to continue supporting real-time services across wireless LANs. In this paper we introduce a novel Access Point (AP) with two transceivers to improve network efficiency in terms of supporting seamless handoff and balancing the traffic load in a wireless network. In our proposed scheme, the novel AP will use the second transceiver to scan and find neighboring STAs in the transmission range and later send the result to its associate AP, which in turn compares and analyzes whether or not the STA should perform a handoff. The initial results from our simulations show the novel AP module is more effective than the conventional one in terms of providing a handoff process with low latency and support traffic load sharing with neighbor APs. © 2006 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 13, 25, 10010-10021, Dec. 2005, Peer-reviwed, Performances of a multiwavelength optical pulse generator by utilizing a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based delayed interferometric switch are investigated. The generator enables us to generate multiwavelength clock pulse trains, which are synchronized with an optical clock. Moreover, the output waveform can be easily controlled by adjusting the time delay and phase offset of the interferometric switch. The obtained pulsewidth controllability is also useful to optimize the waveform according to transmission lines with different cumulative dispersions. We have verified that the pulsewidth tuning enables us to optimize transmission characteristics with various cumulative dispersion values, and have successfully obtained the improved transmission performances of the waveform-converted signals in comparison with conventional signals.

JOURNAL OF LIGHTWAVE TECHNOLOGY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 23, 10, 3404-3418, Oct. 2005, Peer-reviwed, R&D activities on photonic networks in Japan are presented. First, milestones in current ongoing R&D programs supported by Japanese government agencies are introduced, including long-distance and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) fiber transmission, wavelength routing, optical burst switching (OBS), and control-plane technology for IP backbone networks. Their goal was set to evolve a legacy telecommunications network to IP-over-WDM networks by introducing technologies for WDM and wavelength routing. We then discuss the perspectives of so-called PHASE II R&D programs for photonic networks over the next 5 years until 2010, by focusing on the report that has been recently issued by the Photonic Internet Forum (PIF), a consortium that has major carriers, telecom vendors, and Japanese academics as members. The PHASE II R&D programs should serve to establish a photonic platform to provide abundant bandwidth on demand, at any time on a real-time basis, through the customer's initiative to promote bandwidth-rich applications, such as grid computing, real-time digital-cinema streaming, medical and educational applications, and network storage in e-commerce.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E88B, 9, 3668-3681, Sep. 2005, Peer-reviwed, A new expression for cell/packet loss probability in an ATM and packet switched queue system with a finite buffer is presented. Cell and packet loss analysis is based on the new concept of a "buffer overflow cluster" and the overflow probability for a queue with an infinite buffer. This approach holds for a wide variety of long-range dependent traffic sources typical of wide-area networks, as well as Internet and other communication traffics. The method is verified by simulations of two long-range dependent traffic scenarios: fractional Gaussian noise and multifiractal wavelet model traffic with a beta marginal distribution.

  • An efficient network architecture with guaranteed QoS and very high availability for real-time on-line learning

ITRE 2005: 3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: RESEARCH AND EDUCATION, PROCEEDINGS, IEEE, 372-376, 2005, Peer-reviwed, Connection oriented networks such as MPLS can better meet the QoS guarantees required by the emerging e-learning applications that are mostly real-time in nature. These connection oriented networks are more prone to network failures and they can be classified into link/path failures and degraded failures. Virtual Path Hopping (VPH) concept discussed here eliminates all degraded type failures due to control plane failures. Dynamic Virtual Path Allocation (DVPA) algorithm proposed here can achieve very fast recovery from link/path failures while keeping the utilization efficiency of network resources high. This recovery time consists of two main parts; time taken to detect failures and time taken to activate the backup path (BP). DVPA algorithm virtually makes the time taken to activate the BP 'zero' for premium traffic (PT). The Active BP (ABP) will be always used by Best Effort Traffic (BET) when there aren't any failures. Simulation results obtained, were impressive. Implementing DVPA algorithm in conjunction with VPH concept in connection oriented networks can achieve the QoS and very high availability requirements of the future e-learning over the Internet.

  • Burst packet loss recovery using variable FEC matrix for real-time applications over the Internet
    M Hayasaka; M Gamage; T Miki
Proceedings of the Third IASTED International Conference on Communications and Computer Networks, ACTA PRESS, 196-201, 2005, Peer-reviwed, Recently, the demand for real-time applications over the Internet increases as they are cost effective. These applications require a guaranteed end-to-end quality, and the smaller packet size is suitable for these applications to reduce effect of delay jitter. However, burst packet losses caused by buffer overflow at routers represent a serious problem in these applications and are responsible for degradation of the Quality of Service (QoS). Forward error correction (FEC) is a promising technique for recovering lost packets and improving the QoS of them. In this paper, a new FEC method with an effective coding method of FEC matrix and dynamic packet loss recovery is proposed. Numerical results show that the packet loss ratio and transmission efficiency of the proposed method are superior to those of conventional methods.

  • Fragmented Patching Technique: Super Optimal Asynchronous Multicasting for On-demand Video Distribution
    K. Sato; M. Katsumoto; M. Terada; T. Miki
IPSJ Journal, Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), 45, 10, 2297-2313, Oct. 2004, Peer-reviwed, Two asynchronous multicasting techniques - patching and hierarchical merging - which optimize network bandwidth utilization are promising for on-demand video distribution. The hierarchical merging technique requires less network bandwidth than the patching technique, but requires more frequent grafting of the multicast tree. This paper proposes a more optimal form of asynchronous multicasting which we call fragmented patching, where even patch flows are sent in multicasting. This paper compares the required bandwidth and operational complexity on the network with the three techniques. It is the first to present mathematical models for the average usage of link bandwidth with the traffic intensity (Erlang) and the average frequency of tree grafting for multicasting. The mathematical models show that fragmented patching lessens the traffic intensity by 55% (trunk link) and by 75% and 76% (branch links which are branched to four and eight links, respectively), compared with that of hierarchical merging when the request rate is 100 and the content length is 2. However, the technique allows the rate of multicast tree grafting to rise. We allow broadcasting of the patch flows, thus, the rate of multicast tree grafting with fragmented patching remains the same as that with the patching technique. In this case, fragmented patching reduces traffic by 27% (trunk) but adds traffic by 21% and 74% (branches) when the request rate is 20. However, it reduces traffic by 55% (trunk link) and by 30% and 4% (branches) when the request rate is 100.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E87B, 7, 1984-1992, Jul. 2004, Peer-reviwed, Differentiated Services architecture provides a framework that enables relative differentiation of Assured Forwarding (AF) service. The differentiation is quantified by QoS parameters in terms of loss probability and maximum delay. We develop herein an efficient model to compute resource allocation in terms of buffer and service rate that satisfies the QoS differentiation between classes of service. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we conducted extensive simulation on both single-node and multi-node cases. The simulation studies show that the model can provide an efficient method to allocate network resources for aggregated traffic.

IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES 2004 (ISCIT 2004), PROCEEDINGS, VOLS 1 AND 2, IEEE, 274-279, 2004, Peer-reviwed, The future vision distribution service (FVDS) [1] is an innovative video delivery service concept based on the Internet ITS (Intelligent Transport System) area, and source mobility support multicasting (SMM) [2] consists of new multicasting techniques needed to realize FVDS. However, FVDS and SMM lack sufficient application-level protocols to manage preceding and following vehicles on the same route and have a drawback of topological constraints in the access network to accommodate micro mobility. This paper presents two new protocols to solve these problems. The future vision distribution protocol (FVDP) is an application-level protocol that discovers a preceding vehicle on the same route and provides its multicast address for following vehicles by using information from a global positioning system (GPS) and a route guiding function. The self-organizing tree (SOT) protocol is a network-level protocol for use in the access network that organizes radio base-stations into a logical tree topology in a self-forming and self-healing manner. This eliminates the topological constraints and provides the network with robustness from failures and flexibility for network design.

  • A new medium access protocol with prioritization of real-time traffic for multimedia wireless networks
    L Loyola; T Miki; N Nakajima
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E86B, 4, 1247-1255, Apr. 2003, Peer-reviwed, The proposed medium access protocol deals especially with the timely-transmission of real-time packets in wireless multimedia networks where users of many types of traffic are present. It works based on Time Division Multiple Access/Time Division Duplex (TDMA/TDD) technique and fixed-length packet switching incorporating two different policies to work differently on either non-congestion or congestion periods. In the policy to deal with congestion periods the concept of urgent packet has been introduced as any packet whose transmission deadline is on the next frame. Hence, during periods of congestion users inform to the Base Station the number and average deadline of the urgent packets in their buffers through requirement messages. According to that information the system is able to distribute its resources in a more efficient way during periods of congestion making the real-time packet loss rate decrease considerably. The simulation results show a very good performance of the method in networks where different types of traffic coexist even under high traffic-load conditions. The results also show a good trade-off characteristic between the real-time access delay and the buffer occupancy of non-real time terminals during congestion periods.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E86B, 3, 1031-1039, Mar. 2003, Peer-reviwed, A simple nation-wide core network architecture based on the optimized combination of WDM and OTDM technologies in a two-tier structure network is proposed. The dynamic timeslot allocation in a fixed length frame structure associated with the wavelength routing scheme creates a virtual path with variable bandwidth for edge-to-edge transport of any type of packet protocol without O-E-O conversion. The simulation results show that dynamic timeslot assignment with bandwidth reservation is the best alternative for the network bandwidth utilization efficiency. The influence of the delay caused by the physical size of the network during the request-acknowledgement process is also discussed.

  • A new transmission and multiple access scheme based on multicarrier CDMA for future highly mobile networks
    L Loyola; T Miki
PIMRC 2003: 14TH IEEE 2003 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERSONAL, INDOOR AND MOBILE RADIO COMMUNICATIONS PROCEEDINGS, VOLS 1-3 2003, PUBLISHING HOUSE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY, 1944-1948, 2003, Peer-reviwed, in this paper, we propose a new transmission and resource allocation technique based oil Multicarrier Direct-Sequence CDMA (MC-DS-CDMA). The proposed system allocates subcarriers and spreading codes to users by considering their current bandwidth requirements and frequency shifts caused by their movement. Through the use of low-correlation spreading codes in close subcarriers the scheme reduces the inter-carrier interference generated by high-speed users while keeping the inter-symbol interference at a low level due to the multicarrier transmission. The analysis and results Show that a substantial mitigation of both the intercarrier interference and bit error ratio, without reducing the system bandwidth efficiency, can be achieved. That makes Our Proposed method a good candidate for future broadband highly-mobile networks.

  • Multiscale modeling with stable distribution marginals for long-range dependent network traffic
    CT Nguyen; T Miki
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E85B, 12, 2828-2837, Dec. 2002, Peer-reviwed, As demonstrated by many studies, measured wide-area network traffic exhibits fractal properties, such as self-similarity, burstiness, and long-range dependence (LRD). In order to describe long-range dependent network traffic and to emphasize the performance aspects of descriptive traffic models with additive and multiplicative structures, the multifractal wavelet model (MWM), which is based on the binomial cascade, has been shown to match the behavior of network traffic over small and large time scales. In this paper, using appropriate mathematical and statistical analyses, we develop the MWM proposed in [14], which provides a complete description of long-range dependent network traffic. First, we present accurate parameters of the MWM over different time scales. Next, a marginal stable distribution of MWM network traffic data is analyzed. The accuracy of the proposed MWM compared to actual data measurements is confirmed by queuing behavior performance through computer simulations.

After introducing the wireless ATM system model, we describe a new algorithm that enables dynamic slot allocation under TDMA/TDD (Time Division Multiple Access/Time Division Duplex) Media Access Control, making use of UPC (Usage Parameter Control) parameters and traffic characteristics. We show more efficient bandwidth utilization with our proposed algorithm, compared to other conventional algorithms. Moreover, we reveal that our algorithm improves cell transmission delays.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E83B, 11, 2527-2536, Nov. 2000, The Real-time VLBI Correlator (RVC) is a new type processor for the Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). This correlator was primarily designed for supporting the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP). Two particular techniques, the fringe rotator after correlation and the lag-time extension technique, are newly developed for the RVC. The correlation circuit size of VLBI correlator is reduced to half by introducing the new fringe rotator, and it makes possible to realize a large delay window being essential in finding a cross correlation in real-time. The delay window can be changed flexibly with the lag-time extension technique, and its technique is useful to detect the fringe peak in a VSOP observation. The new correlator was installed at the Usuda Deep Space Center in Japan, and is used in VSOP and other domestic VLBI observations. In this paper, the key features of the Real-time VLBI Correlator (RVC) focusing on these advanced techniques are presented, and the results of its performance test are shown.

    T MIKI
PROCEEDINGS OF THE IEEE, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 81, 11, 1594-1609, Nov. 1993, Peer-reviwed, Remarkable technological progress has been made In the development of Optical Transport Networks during the past decade. An optical transport network is a digital signal transport platform which provides flexible and powerful signal transmission capabilities needed to create telecommunication services networks. This paper highlights the key technologies required for the development of optical transport networks, optical fiber transmission, and digital transport which includes transmission signal multiplexing, transport nodes, and network operation functions. The trends in transport technology evolution, the impact of SDH and ATM, the role of TMN (Telecommunications Management Networks), and network integrity enhancement techniques are elucidated. It is demonstrated that these technologies have brought about a dramatic change in transport network design and performance. Further innovations are required to fully realize a high-performance computer communication network, a cost-effective nation-wide BISDN, and local networks for video distribution. These include the realization of an optical access transport network, and the extension of trunk network capabilities which will be possible with optical path layer technologies.

    T MIKI
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS ELECTRONICS INFORMATION AND SYSTEMS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, 74, 1, 93-100, Jan. 1991, Peer-reviwed, Introduction of fiber-optic systems to the subscriber network is the key issue for the next generation network. Fiber-optic systems have, so far, been limited to business applications. However, the large scale introduction of fiber-optic systems to all customers, especially to the home and to small business customers is indispensable for the smooth evolution of B-ISDN. Accordingly, NTT plans to introduce a fiberoptic subscriber network widely to the home from around 1995 and to achieve an all fiber subscriber network by 2015. This paper presents the development and deployment concept for a fiber-optic subscriber network. It also proposes the fiber-optic network services that should be offered upon fiber-optic system deployment. Near term system development and deployment strategies are also discussed.
