OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 41, 6, 1281-1284, Mar. 2016, Peer-reviwed, We report on volume holographic recording at a wavelength of 532 nm in photopolymerizable polymer nanocomposites that are incorporated with new hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) acting as transporting organic nanoparticles. Since HBPs possess an ultrahigh index of refraction of 1.82 due to the inclusion of triazine and aromatic ring units, highcontrast transmission volume holographic gratings with refractive index modulation amplitudes as large as 2.2 x 10(-2) are recorded. This value enables us to realize a 10 mu m thick transmission volume grating with the diffraction efficiency near 100% in the green. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

  • Measurement of polymerization-shrinkage evolution during curing in photopolymer with a white-light Fabry-Perot interferometer

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 23, 12, 15356-15364, Jun. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We propose a simple method of measuring polymerization-shrinkage evolution during curing in photopolymer. The real-time spectral fringe analysis of a broadband beam transmitted through a Fabry-Perot etalon supported by a photopolymer film provides the shrinkage evolution during curing. For the proof-of-principle demonstration a blue-sensitized nanoparticle-polymer composite material is used. It is shown that the measured shrinkage dynamics are well correlated with the photo-calorimetric conversion dynamics of monomer to polymer. We also discuss a discrepancy in steady-state shrinkage between our proposed and holographic Bragg-angle detuning measurements. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 39, 23, 6743-6746, Dec. 2014, Peer-reviwed, We report influences of varying functionalities of thiols as chain transfer agents on the spatial frequency response, polymerization shrinkage, and thermal stability of a volume grating recorded in a photopolymerizable ZrO2 nanoparticle-polymer composite film. It is shown that a substantial increase in the saturated refractive index modulation is realized at high spatial frequencies by doping with multifunctional thiols. Moreover, the incorporation of multifunctional thiols considerably suppresses polymerization shrinkage of recorded volume gratings and thermal changes in refractive index and film thickness as compared with the case of mono-thiol. These results indicate that multifunctional thiols provide effective control of the properties of nanoparticle-polymer composite volume gratings for various applications in light and neutron optics. Ryuta Fujii; Jinxin Guo; Juergen Klepp; Christian Pruner; Martin Fally; Yasuo Tomita
OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 39, 12, 3453-3456, Jun. 2014, Peer-reviwed, We demonstrate twofold enhancement of the saturated refractive index modulation (Delta n(sat)) recorded in a photopolymerizable nanoparticle-acrylate polymer composite film by incorporating thiols acting as chain transfer agents. The chain transfer reaction of thiols with (meth) acrylate monomer reduces the polymer crosslinking density and facilitates the mutual diffusion of nanoparticles and monomer during holographic exposure. These modifications provide increased density modulations of nanoparticles and the formed polymer, resulting in the enhancement of Delta n(sat) as high as 1.6 x 10(-2) at a wavelength of 532 nm. The incorporation of thiols also leads to shrinkage suppression and to improvement of the grating's spatial frequency response. Such simultaneous improvement is very useful for holographic applications in light and neutron optics. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

  • Holographic nanoparticle-polymer composites based on radical-mediated thiol-yne photopolymerizations: characterization and shift-multiplexed holographic digital data page storage
Ken Mitsube; Yuki Nishimura; Kohta Nagaya; Shingo Takayama; Yasuo Tomita
OPTICAL MATERIALS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 4, 5, 982-996, May 2014, Peer-reviwed, We investigate volume holographic recording in a photopolymerizable nanoparticle-polymer (NPC) composite film that employs radical-mediated thiol-yne step-growth photopolymerizations. Because each alkyne functional group can react consecutively with two thiol functional groups in thiol-yne photopolymerizatins, the thiol-yne based NPC system dispersed with inorganic nanoparticles has the potentiality to overcome the drawback of low crosslinking densities but to retain the advantage of low shrinkage that is possible by use of thiol-ene photopolymerizations. We show that a thiol-yne based NPC film dispersed with 25 vol.% SiO2 nanoparticles and 15 wt.% single functional co-monomer gives the saturated refractive index change as large as 0.008 and the material recording sensitivity as high as 2005 cm/J at a recording and readout wavelength of 532 nm. We find that while the shrinkage of a volume hologram recorded in a thiol-yne based NPC dispersed with organic nanopartices can be as low as 0.5%, it is approximately 1% with the dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles due to the plasticizing effect of the doped co-monomer. On the other hand, the thermal stability is improved better with the dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles. We also demonstrate shift-multiplexed holographic storage of 80 digital data pages in a thiol-yne based NPC film with high readout fidelity. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

  • Optical Properties of Electrically Tunable Two-Dimensional Photonic Lattice Structures Formed in a Holographic Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Film: Analysis and Experiment
Mayu Miki; Ryuichiro Ohira; Yasuo Tomita
MATERIALS, MDPI AG, 7, 5, 3677-3698, May 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, We report on theoretical and experimental investigations of optical wave propagations in two-dimensional photonic lattice structures formed in a holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) film. In the theoretical analysis we employed the 2x2 matrix formulation and the statistical thermodynamics model to analyze the formation of anisotropic photonic lattice structures by holographic polymerization. The influence of multiple reflections inside an HPDLC film on the formed refractive index distribution was taken into account in the analysis. In the experiment we fabricated two-dimensional photonic lattice structures in an HPDLC film under three-beam interference holographic polymerization and performed optical measurements of spectral transmittances and wavelength dispersion. We also demonstrated the electrical control capability of the fabricated photonic lattice structure and its dependence on incident wave polarization. These measured results were compared with the calculated ones by means of photonic band and beam propagation calculations.

  • Effects of symbol modulation coding on readout fidelity of shift-multiplexed holographic digital data page storage in a photopolymerizable nanoparticle-(thiol-ene)polymer composite film
Shingo Takayama; Kohta Nagaya; Keisuke Momose; Yasuo Tomita
Applied Optics, Optical Society of America, 53, 10, B53-B59, 01 Apr. 2014, Peer-reviwed, We report on shift-multiplexed holographic storage of 250 digital data pages in a photopolymerizable silica nanoparticle–polymer composite film being capable of step-growth thiol-ene polymerization in the green. Various two-dimensional symbol modulation codes for the digital data page format were employed

to examine the dependence of the readout fidelity on modulation coding schemes. It is found that, as compared to 1∶2 and 2∶4 modulation codes, higher-order 5∶9, 9∶16, and 13∶25 modulation codes possessing reduced white rates and higher coding efficiencies give lower symbol-error rates of ∼0.001 and

    higher signal-to-noise ratios (>4).

MATERIALS, MDPI AG, 5, 12, 2788-2815, Dec. 2012, Peer-reviwed, Recent progress in the development of holographic gratings for neutron-optics applications is reviewed. We summarize the properties of gratings recorded in deuterated (poly)methylmethacrylate, holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals and nanoparticle-polymer composites revealed by diffraction experiments with slow neutrons. Existing and anticipated neutron-optical instrumentations based on holographic gratings are discussed.

OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 37, 12, 2250-2252, Jun. 2012, Peer-reviwed, We demonstrate shift-multiplexed holographic storage of 180 digital data pages with low symbol-error rates in a thick (250 mu m) SiO2 nanoparticle-polymer composite film using step-growth thiol-ene photopolymerization. A two-dimensional 2:4 modulation code was employed for formatting digital data pages in order to reduce the average intensity of code block without decreasing the coding efficiency. This study clearly shows the feasibility of the thiol-ene based nanoparticle-polymer composite system as a holographic data storage medium. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 20, 12, 13457-13469, Jun. 2012, Peer-reviwed, We report on observation of high-order optical nonlinearities in our recently developed photopolymerizable semiconductor CdSe quantum dot (QD)-polymer nanocomposite films at various volume fractions of CdSe QDs as high as 0.91 vol.% (3.6 wt.%). We performed Z-scan and degenerate multi-wave mixing (DMWM) measurements using a 532-nm picosecond laser delivering single 35 ps pulses at a repetition rate of 10 Hz. Using the uniformly cured polymer nanocomposite films, we observed the third-and fifth-order nonlinear optical effects in closed-aperture Z-scan measurements by which it was found that saturable nonlinear absorption (light-induced transparency) and large negative nonlinear refraction were induced. We also measured dependences of the effective third- and fifth-order nonlinear refraction constants on CdSe QD volume fraction. Based on the Maxwell-Garnett model, we estimated the third-and fifth-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of CdSe QD and discussed a contribution of the third-order effect to the fifth-order one due to the cascaded (local-field) effect. Coexistence of the third-and fifth-order nonlinear refraction was also confirmed by DMWM. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Optical Materials Express, 1, 6, 1113-1120, 01 Oct. 2011, Peer-reviwed, Spectroscopic, photocalorimetric and holographic measurements are conducted to investigate effects of stoichiometric thiol-to-ene ratio on the polymerization dynamics, refractive index modulation, recording sensitivity and polymerization shrinkage of volume gratings recorded in silica nanoparticle-polymer composite films based on step-growth radical addition polymerization. It is found that the polymerization rate of the composite system is maximized at the stoichiometric thiol-ene composition. It is also found that while the refractive index modulation and the recording sensitivity are maximized at the stoichiometric thiol-ene composition, polymerization shrinkage decreases with increasing the thiol monomer fraction. A negative correlation between gel point conversion and shrinkage is observed. © 2011 Optical Society of America.

OPTICAL MATERIALS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 1, 2, 207-222, Jun. 2011, Peer-reviwed, We report on the photopolymerization kinetics and volume holographic recording characteristics of silica nanoparticle-polymer composites using thiol-ene monomers capable of step-growth polymerization. Real-time Fourier transform spectroscopy and photocalorimetry are used to characterize the visible light curing kinetics of a thiol-ene monomer system consisting of secondary dithiol with high self-life stability and low odor and triene with rigid structure and high electron density. It is shown that while the nanoparticle-(thiol-ene) polymer composites exhibit high transparency, their saturated refractive index modulation (Delta n(sat)) and material sensitivity (S) are as large as 1x10(-2) and 1615 cm/J, respectively. The polymerization shrinkage is reduced as low as 0.4% as a result of the late gelation in conversion. These values meet the acceptable values for holographic data storage media (i.e., 5x10(-3), 500 cm/J and 0.5% for Delta n(sat), S and shrinkage, respectively). It is also shown that because of the dispersion of inorganic silica nanoparticles and the use of the triene monomer having the rigid structure of the triazine functional group, the thermal stability of recorded holograms is much improved over our previously reported nanoparticle-polymer composites using organic nanoparticles and primary mercaptopropionate trithiol/allyl ether triene monomers [Opt. Lett. 35, 396 (2010)]. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 26, 7, 1281-1288, Jul. 2009, Peer-reviwed, We investigate slow-light pulse propagation in an optical fiber via transient stimulated Brillouin scattering. Space-time evolution of a generating slow-light pulse is numerically calculated by solving three-wave coupled-mode equations between a pump beam, an acoustic wave, and a counterpropagating signal pulse. Our mathematical treatments are applicable to both narrowband and broadband pump cases. We show that the time delay of 85% pulse width can be obtained for a signal pulse of the order of subnanosecond pulse width by using a broadband pump, while the signal pulse is broadened only by 40% of the input signal pulse. The physical origin of the pulse broadening and distortion is explained in terms of the temporal decay of the induced acoustic field. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

A holographic method is used to evaluate the temperature-induced Bragg-angle detuning of recorded volume holograms as a result of thermally induced refractive index and dimensional changes. It is found that the incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles into photopolymer leads to the effective suppression of these thermal changes, thereby extending the range of operating temperatures for their use in photonic applications. APPLIED OPTICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 46, 27, 6809-6814, Sep. 2007, Peer-reviwed, We describe an experimental study of holographic (coherent) scattering due to parasitic noise gratings recorded in SiO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymer films. Dependences of film thickness and nanoparticle concentration on holographic scattering losses are evaluated. It is shown that the geometric feature of the holographic scattering pattern in the two-beam recording setup can be explained by the Ewald sphere construction. It is found that holographic scattering becomes noticeable when a film with nanoparticle concentrations higher than 10 vol.% is thicker than 100 mu m. The significance of holographic scattering in the characterization of a volume grating recorded in a thick (>100 mu m) nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymer film is also discussed. OPTICAL MATERIALS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 29, 7, 889-895, Mar. 2007, Peer-reviwed, We describe the ultraviolet-light one-color photorefraction (UV-OPR) at 351 run in LiNbO3 crystals with different Mg-doping concentrations and [Li]/[Nb] ratios. It is shown that as the Mg-doping concentration and/or the [Li]/[Nb] ratio increase, the refractive index change and the two-beam coupling gain increase but the response time decreases. It is also shown that the recording sensitivity as large as similar to 27 cm/J is obtainable at a recording intensity of similar to 1 W/cm(2) in near-stoichiometric LiNbO3 doped with 2 mol% Mg. This sensitivity is approximately one order of magnitude higher than those for other LiNbO3 crystals. We also describe the ultraviolet-light-gating two-color photorefraction (UV-TPR) using 365 nm gating and 633 nm recording beams in LiNbO3 crystals with different Mg-doping concentrations and [Li]/[Nb] ratios. It is shown that UV-TPR is only observed in near-stoichiometric crystals and the grating-formation dynamics strongly depend on the Mg concentration. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

More than thirty-fold reduction in the scattering coefficient, as compared with those of previously reported TiO2 nanoparticle-dispersed photopolymers, is achieved. It is shown that the refractive index modulation as high as 5.3 x 10(-3), together with substantive photopolymerization-shrinkage suppression, is obtained at the nanoparticle concentration of 15 vol.%. Dependences of nanoparticle concentration and grating spacing on the refractive index modulation are also investigated. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

It is found that BBP, which is a well-known plasticizer, can be directly mixed with methacrylate monomer and that a refractive index modulation as high as similar to 0.006 is recorded with a BBP concentration of 36 vol%. It is also found that the additional dispersion of silica nanoparticles substantially suppresses polymerization shrinkage without increasing optical scattering loss.

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 14, 12, 5773-5778, Jun. 2006, Peer-reviwed, Ultraviolet-light-induced absorption (UVLIA) in a highly Zn-doped LiNbO3 crystal is studied at room temperature with various probe wavelengths from the violet to the near-infrared spectral regions. Transient dark buildup of UVLIA is observed in the violet-blue (< 500 nm) region, while such a phenomenon is yet absent in the green-red (> 500 nm) region. It is found that the temporal evolution of UVLIA in the dark is well described by a sum of two stretched exponential functions. These results are explained in terms of a three-level model involving two types of hole-trapped O-levels and one unintentional impurity FeLi level. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS PART 1-REGULAR PAPERS SHORT NOTES & REVIEW PAPERS, INST PURE APPLIED PHYSICS, 43, 11A, 7491-7494, Nov. 2004, Peer-reviwed, We demonstrate near-infrared one-color nonvolatile photorefractivity in stoichiometric LiNbO3 doped with Mg above threshold under ultraviolet (UV)-light preexposure. The dynamics of the diffraction efficiency and two-beam coupling during the recording and fixing processes are investigated. It is found that the dynamics of the grating buildup and fixing processes are strongly dependent on the writing time, which can be explained qualitatively by the proposed two-center model. A recording sensitivity as high as 0.23cm/J is obtained at 780nm.

JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 21, 4, 753-760, Apr. 2004, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the ultraviolet-(UV-) light-induced two-color photorefractivity in a near-stoichiometric LiNbO3 crystal doped with Mg above the damage-resistant threshold concentration. Measurements of holographic recording and optical fixing dynamics with, a 365-nm gating beam show that complementary shallow and deep gratings are formed during recording and that at least four defect centers are involved in the two-color holographic recording process. It is confirmed that UV-light-induced defect centers O- responsible for the broads band absorption changes act as shallow centers in UV-light-gating two-color holography. These findings indicate that the physical mechanism of the UV-light-gating two-color photorefractive effect in the crystal is essentially different from that of the recently reported two-color photorefractive effect in Mg-doped near-stoichiometric LiNbO3 with a 488-mn gating beam [Appl. JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 93, 12, 9456-9459, Jun. 2003, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the ultraviolet (UV)-light-induced transient photorefractivity in a highly Mg-doped LiNbO3 crystal. The thermal activation energy of the UV-light-induced defect centers responsible for the induced transient photorefractivity was measured to be 0.65 eV and holes were found to be the major charge carriers. These results provide a solid basis for the model that intermediate states O- are the UV-light-induced defect centers in the crystal. We also demonstrate quasinondestructive two-color holography using UV-light-induced transient photorefractivity. The two-color recording sensitivity was measured to be as high as 0.05 cm/J with a recording intensity of 5 W/cm(2) at 780 nm and a gating intensity of 0.47 W/cm(2) at 365 nm. • Broadband absorption changes and sensitization of near-infrared photorefractivity induced by ultraviolet light in LiNbO3 : Mg
    GQ Zhang; Y Tomita
JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 91, 7, 4177-4180, Apr. 2002, Peer-reviwed, We observe ultraviolet-light-induced absorption changes in spectral regions from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared in as-grown LiNbO3:Mg. Such a broad light-induced absorption band is unstable at room temperature and decays nonmonoexponentially in the dark with a time constant on the order of tens of seconds. We attribute the appearance of the broadband light-induced absorption to the creation of the intermediate state O- in which holes excited from deep defect centers are trapped at O2- sites near cation vacancies. It is also found that near-infrared photorefractive sensitivities increase by several orders of magnitude by pre-exposing the crystal to incoherent ultraviolet light. These properties may be useful for an application of LiNbO3:Mg to nonvolatile two-color holography. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

  • Characterization of index and surface-relief gratings formed in methacrylate photopolymers
    Takashi Kojima; Yasuo Tomita
Optical Review, Optical Society of Japan, 9, 5, 222-226, 2002, Peer-reviwed, We report on an experimental investigation of the dual (index and surface-relief) grating formation in methacrylate photopolymers in the green. It is found that the dynamics of the diffracted signal from high spatial frequency dual gratings recorded in a thin film sample is mainly determined by the evolution of the volume index grating and is strongly dependent on writing intensities. Low spatial frequency dual gratings recorded in a bulk sample are also investigated. Depth profile and magnitude of the index grating are estimated quantitatively from the diffraction efficiency as a function of polish depth from the bulk sample's surface. It is confirmed that the surface-relief grating is dominant in the light diffraction from the bulk sample.

The result shows that linear absorption of mutually coherent writing beams in the medium gives rise to the hologram apodization which leads to substantive sidelobe suppression in the Bragg detuning curve of the diffraction efficiency. It is also shown that the effectiveness of the hologram apodization strongly depends on the incident direction of a readout beam with respect to the gain direction of beam coupling that takes place between two writing beams. OPTICAL AND QUANTUM ELECTRONICS, KLUWER ACADEMIC PUBL, 32, 3, 349-365, Mar. 2000, We describe recent studies on diffraction properties of a photorefractive barium titanate crystal having a thermally fixed grating. Buildup dynamics of diffracted signals are measured to analyze the contributions of ionic and re-created photocarrier (hole) gratings to the temperature-dependent diffraction efficiency in self-enhanced readout. An activation energy of mobile ions as nonphotoactive secondary carriers for fixing volume holograms is determined holographically. This Value is compared with that of hydrogen ions estimated from polarization-dependent infrared absorption spectra in order to indentify the fixing species.

  • New approach to determine the intensity and phase of ultrashort pulses by use of time-to-space conversion and a noniterative phase-retrieval algorithm
    N Nakajima; Y Tomita
JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA A-OPTICS IMAGE SCIENCE AND VISION, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 16, 6, 1268-1276, Jun. 1999, We propose a novel scheme for directly determining the intensity and phase of ultrashort pulses. The technique involves time-to-space conversion of an input pulse by a diffraction grating, followed by the detection of its spectral intensity distributions in the Fourier transform plane with and without an exponential filter placed in front of the grating. By use of an efficient noniterative phase-retrieval algorithm, the spectral phase of the pulse is retrieved from these spectral intensities. The intensity and phase of the pulse in the temporal domain can be reconstructed by the inverse Fourier transformation of the retrieved spectral amplitude. Computer simulation results confirm that robust reconstructions of a linearly chirped pulse and a pulse with quadratic and cubic spectral phases are possible with high fidelity. • Photorefractive beam coupling between orthogonally polarized light beams by linear dichroism in Cu-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate
    Y Tomita; S Matsushima
JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 16, 1, 111-116, Jan. 1999, Two-beam coupling between orthogonally polarized waves is demonstrated by use of linear dichroism in Cu-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate. A maximum coupling gain coefficient of approximately 4 cm-l is obtained at a grating spacing of 1 mu m and a wavelength of 514.5 nm, where linear dichroism is moderate. The experimental results are compared with a theoretical model that allows a photorefractive grating to have an arbitrary phase shift with respect to an intensity-interference pattern. Fitting results indicate that the grating is not 90 degrees-phase-shifted under open-circuit conditions. The contribution of the bulk photovoltaic field to the photorefractive phase shift is discussed. (C) 1999 Optical Society of America [S0740-3224(99)01201-1] OCIS codes: 190.0190, 190.5330, 190.7070.

  • Origin of temperature-dependent diffraction efficiency in self-enhanced readout from thermally fixed gratings in photorefractive barium titanate
    Y Tomita; SS Matsushima
JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 14, 11, 2877-2884, Nov. 1997, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the role of temperature-dependent ionic and re-created photocarrier (hole) gratings in self-enhanced readout from thermally fixed holographic gratings in undoped barium titanate. Initial and steady-state values of self-enhanced diffraction efficiencies were analyzed to separate ion and hole components of holographic gratings. We show that the temperature dependence of the diffraction efficiency below similar to 80 degrees C is determined mainly by the temperature-dependent behavior of the dielectric and electro-optic constants. On the other hand, it is predominantly the trend of the ionic grating that determines the temperature dependence of the diffraction efficiency above similar to 80 degrees C, even though the magnitude of the hole grating increases monotonically and is more than 10 times larger than that of the ionic grating. This finding explains the origin of the previously reported behavior of the temperature-dependent diffraction efficiency in barium titanate [Zhang et al., Appl. Opt. 34, 5241 (1995)]. An activation energy of the mobile ions was determined to be 1.05 eV, from which the shelf life of the ionic grating is estimated to be more than 150 days at 25 degrees C. F Nishida; Y Tomita
JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 81, 8, 3348-3353, Apr. 1997, Peer-reviwed, The steady-state and transient behavior of the photoconducting electro-optic polymer, PVK:TNF:DR1:ECz, was analyzed with various writing and reading beam polarization configurations to elucidate the contribution of various effects including the photoisomerization process on the diffraction phenomenon at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. The effect of the applied field on the diffraction efficiencies was observed to be strongly dependent on the polarization states of the writing and reading beams, It was found that the electro-optic contribution dominated the diffraction phenomenon for the p-polarized writing and reading beams while the molecular reorientation effect dominated for the s-polarized writing and reading beams and when the writing beams are cross polarized, The diffraction grating formed via the photoisomerization process was confirmed to be refractive index grating instead of an absorption grating. OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 126, 1-3, 95-102, May 1996, We investigate the dynamics of space-charge field formation and decay in a barium titanate crystal by single pulses of 30 ps duration at a wavelength of 532 nm, Based on the two-center electron-hole transport model, a computer simulation is performed for the dynamics on a time scale of picosecond to seconds. It is shown that the dynamics depends on a degree of the electron-hole competition which is strongly influenced by two-photon absorption. Shallow traps are found to be responsible for the dark buildup of the space-charge field. A comparison of the dynamics for single picosecond and nanosecond pulses is also made.

OPTICAL MATERIALS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 4, 2-3, 281-285, Jan. 1995, Photorefractive two-beam coupling gain and speed of Cr-doped potassium sodium strontium barium niobate are measured as a function of crystal temperature. It is found that the saturated coupling gain coefficient has strong temperature dependence near the ferroelectric phase transition. It is also found that the photoconductivity-dominant build-up time for the space-charge field exhibits temperature dependence. These behaviors are found quite different from the dark-conductivity dominant case and can be explained in terms of power-law dependence of a dielectric constant and a linear electrooptic coefficient on the crystal temperature.
