In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally show that in a Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process, the first anti-Stokes and Stokes generations can be tailored in a variety of ways by manipulating the phase relationships among the relevant electromagnetic fields.

  • Arbitrary manipulation of amplitude and phase of a set of highly discrete coherent spectra

We show that the relative amplitude and phase of such spectra can be almost arbitrarily manipulated by simply placing three fundamental optical elements-namely, a waveplate, polarizer, and dispersive plate-on an optical axis and then controlling their thicknesses. We also describe the relevant physical mechanism. Furthermore, as a typical application of this optical nature, we demonstrate arbitrary optical waveform generation in a numerical experiment, and we discuss its limitations as an optical-wave manipulation technology and how we can overcome these limitations.

    THIRD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON APPLICATIONS OF OPTICS AND PHOTONICS, SPIE-INT SOC OPTICAL ENGINEERING, 10453, 2017, Peer-reviwed, We have successfully generated a new broadband coherent light source in the continuous wave (CW) regime which is an ensemble of multi-harmonic radiations (2403, 1201, 801, 600 and 480 nm) by implementing a frequency dividing technology. The system is uniquely designed that all the harmonics are generated and propagate coaxially which gives the advantage of robustly maintaining the phase coherence among the harmonics. The highlight is its huge potential for the arbitrary optical waveform synthesis in the CW regime which has not been performed yet due to the limitation of the existing light source.

    We report a multiple wavelength injection-locked continuous-wave Titanium sapphire laser. It consists of a Ti:sapphire ring laser as a power oscillator, two diode-lasers as seed lasers, and a high finesse master cavity as a frequency reference. Stable dual-wavelength injection-locked oscillation is achieved with a watt level output powers at both oscillating wavelengths.We show the single transverse and longitudinal mode characteristics, and power stability. Also, we demonstrate arbitrary selectivity of the two frequencies and flexible control of their relative powers.

  • Freely designable optical frequency conversion in Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process

    SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 5, 8874, Mar. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Nonlinear optical processes are governed by the relative-phase relationships among the relevant electromagnetic fields in these processes. In this Report, we describe the physics of arbitrary manipulation of Raman-resonant four-wave-mixing process by artificial control of relative phases. As a typical example, we show freely designable optical-frequency conversions to extreme spectral regions, mid-infrared and vacuum-ultraviolet, with near-unity quantum efficiencies. Furthermore, we show that such optical-frequency conversions can be realized by using a surprisingly simple technology where transparent plates are placed in a nonlinear optical medium and their positions and thicknesses are adjusted precisely. In a numerical simulation assuming practically applicable parameters in detail, we demonstrate a single-frequency tunable laser that covers the whole vacuum-ultraviolet spectral range of 120 to 200 nm.

    macro-coherent amplification mechanism using a two-photon emission process from
    the first vibrationally-excited state of para-hydrogen molecule. Large
    coherence in the initial state was prepared by the adiabatic Raman population
    transfer method, and the lowest Stokes sideband was used as a trigger field. We
    observed the coherent two-photon emission consistent with the expectation of
    the paired super-radiance master equation.

  • Coherent phonon-induced optical modulation in semiconductors at terahertz frequencies

    NEW JOURNAL OF PHYSICS, IOP PUBLISHING LTD, 15, NJP / 466098 / SPE/270577, May 2013, Peer-reviwed, The coherent modulation of electronic and vibrational nonlinearities in atoms and molecular gases by intense few-cycle pulses has been used for high-harmonic generation in the soft x-ray and attosecond regime, as well as for Raman frequency combs that span multiple octaves from the terahertz to petahertz frequency regions. In principle, similar high-order nonlinear processes can be excited efficiently in solids and liquids on account of their high nonlinear polarizability densities. In this paper, we demonstrate the phononic modulation of the optical index of Si and GaAs for excitation and probing near their direct band gaps, respectively at similar to 3.4 and similar to 3.0 eV. The large amplitude coherent longitudinal optical (LO) polarization due to the excitation of LO phonons of Si (001) and LO phonon-plasmon coupled modes in GaAs (001) excited by 10 fs laser pulses induces effective amplitude and phase modulation of the reflected probe light. The combined action of the amplitude and phase modulation in Si and GaAs generates phonon frequency combs with more than 100 and 60 THz bandwidth, respectively.

  • Coherent phonon frequency comb generated by few-cycle femtosecond pulses in Si

    XVIIITH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ULTRAFAST PHENOMENA, E D P SCIENCES, 41, 04020, 2013, Peer-reviwed, We explore the coherent phonon induced refractive index modulation of a Si(001) surface upon the excitation in near-resonance with the direct band gap of Si. Through the anisotropic e-h pair generation and coherent Raman scattering, similar to 10-fs laser pulses exert a sudden electrostrictive force on Si lattice launching coherent LO phonon oscillations at 15.6 THz frequency. The concomitant oscillatory change in the optical constants modulates the reflected probe light at the fundamental LO phonon frequency, generating a broad comb of frequencies at exact integer multiples of the fundamental frequency extending to beyond 100 THz. On the basis of an analytical model, we show that the simultaneous amplitude and phase modulation of the reflected light by the coherent lattice polarization at 15.6 THz generates the frequency comb.

  • Frequency comb generation at terahertz frequencies by coherent phonon excitation in silicon

Optical nonlinearities in solid-state materials are particularly interesting for combining optical and electronic functions for high-bandwidth information processing(2). Third-order nonlinear optical processes in silicon have been used to process optical signals with bandwidths greater than 1 GHz (ref. 2). However, fundamental physical processes for a silicon-based optical modulator in the terahertz bandwidth range have not yet been explored. Here, we demonstrate ultrafast phononic modulation of the optical index of silicon by irradiation with intense few-cycle femtosecond pulses. The anisotropic reflectivity modulation by the resonant Raman susceptibility at the fundamental frequency of the longitudinal optical phonon of silicon (15.6 THz) generates a frequency comb up to seventh order. All-optical > 100 THz frequency comb generation is realized by harnessing the coherent atomic motion of the silicon crystalline lattice at its highest mechanical frequency.

This report is formed by the selected papers presented in the "Fifth International Workshop on stimulated Brillouin scattering and phase conjugation 2010" in Japan. The nonlinear properties of phase conjugation based on stimulated Brillouin scattering and photorefraction can compensate phase distortions in the high power laser systems, and they will also open up potentially novel laser technologies, e. g., phase stabilization, beam combination, pulse compression, ultrafast pulse shaping, and arbitrary waveform generation.

Trains of rectangular and triangular pulses are stably produced at an ultrahigh repetition rate of 10.6229 THz, reminiscent of an ultrafast function generator.

  • Dual-frequency injection-locked nanosecond pulsed laser with arbitrary combination of two oscillation frequencies

This performance is achieved by employing two techniques. One involves introducing two different modulation frequencies to discriminate electronically the error signals, which are used for locking the two seed frequencies to the forced oscillator. The other is a cavity design that enables us to sweep the cavity length without distorting the alignment or changing the spatial mode of the cavity.   • Line-by-line control of 10-THz-frequency-spacing Raman sidebands

We show that the spectral phase of the Raman sidebands is finely controlled to the target (flat relative-spectral-phase). This is achieved by employing a combination of a spatial phase controller and a spectral interferometer, which are specifically designed for a high-power discrete spectrum. We also show that such spectral-phase control produces a train of Fourier transform limited pulses with an ultrahigh repetition rate of 10.6 THz in the time domain. (C)2010 Optical Society of America

  • Spectral phase measurements for broad Raman sidebands by using spectral interferometry

The method is based on an idea of spectral interference. Making use of a small portion of two Raman pump laser radiations, we produce two sum-frequency spectra that spectrally interfere with each other. Based on this interfering sum-frequency spectra, we successfully derive the spectral phase and reconstruct the temporal profile. The reliability of this method is also confirmed by measuring the spectral phase changes caused by intentionally inserted silica plates of various thicknesses and comparing them to theoretical predictions. We realize an octave-spanning Raman comb with carrier-envelope-offset frequency control, by using dual-frequency laser radiation locked on a single laser cavity and simultaneously its second harmonic. It is shown that in both the temporal and spectral domains, locking the dual frequencies on a single laser cavity provides control of the carrier-envelope-offset frequency at integer multiples of the free spectral range of the laser cavity.

  • Stable confinement of nanosecond laser pulse in an enhancement cavity

The point of the technique is that a weak continuous-wave laser radiation, locked to the enhancement cavity, is injected into a nanosecond injection-locked pulsed laser as a seed. This leads to a stable confinement of the nanosecond pulse in the enhancement cavity. It is demonstrated that the pulsed intensity is enhanced by a factor of 120 for a 40-ns pulse, consistent with the theoretical prediction. (c) 2008 Optical Society of America

A simple and effective model is proposed to quantitatively study this type of laser system. It is shown that the model precisely predicts the performance of such a system over a wide spectral region and a full dynamic range. Furthermore, the results confirm the accuracy of the assumption regarding the homogeneous broadening in Ti:sapphire lasers, and also prove that competition between the two wavelength components does not induce instability. By use of two feedback loops, seeds of two independent master lasers are locked on specific longitudinal modes of a power oscillator, leading to a stable dual-wavelength oscillation over a long time scale. The two injection-locked pulsed outputs completely overlap in time, with spectral purities reaching a Fourier-transform limit. The dual-wavelength oscillation is controlled by the master lasers only, allowing for flexible selectivity of the two wavelengths and full controllability of the relative two-wavelength pulsed energies. The intensity-waveform of this ultrashort-pulse-train is directly evaluated in time domain based on a sum-frequency-generation autocorrelation-technique. It is shown that a 10.6-THz ultrahigh-repetition-train of short pulses is formed with an effective-duration of 20 fs and a high peak-power of 2 MW. (C) 2005 Optical Society of America.

By using Raman coherence prepared with two single-frequency pulsed lasers, we generated the multiorder coherent Raman sidebands in solid hydrogen film. High-order Raman sidebands were obtained under strong pumping conditions (greater than or equal to 230 MW/cm(2)). The generated anti-Stokes(AS)-Raman sidebands extended from ultraviolet (292 nm for AS5 band) to visible (565 nm for AS1 band) region. The multiorder Raman sideband generation is thought to be due to the parametric coupling of pump and coupling lasers. The frequency conversion efficiency shows the maximum (14%) at the pumping intensity of 360 MW/cm(2). From the experiment that makes the multimode probe beam beat with the prepared Raman coherence, we found that the prepared Raman coherence replicates the probe beam to its Raman sidebands.

Using Raman coherence prepared with two single-frequency pulsed lasers, we generated the multiorder coherent Raman sidebands in solid hydrogen film. It was found that the linewidth of these spectra is similar to 1.5 MHz. From the observed Brillouin shift and the crystal orientation, the elastic stiffness was determined as C-11 =0.355 +/-0.016 GPa and C-33 =0.432 +/-0.022 GPa.

  • Measurement of the energy decay rate for the first vibrational-excited-state in solid parahydrogen

Measurements are carried out using the transient optothermal lensing spectroscopy with the vibrational excitations via the stimulated Raman scattering. The decay rate is measured to be 2.3x10(4) s(-1) at 4.8 K, and it increases to 6.1x10(4) s(-1) by raising the temperature to 12 K. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

  • Parametric stimulated Raman scattering with solid hydrogen

We carry out stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) experiments using a large Raman coherence prepared with two single frequency pulsed lasers. We show that multiorder SRS generation proceeds collinearly to the pump beam axis without stringent restriction of phase matching. We show also that the SRS generation dominantly occurs for negative two-photon detuning for which the Raman coherence can follow the antiphased state coherence.

  • Large coherence as a local oscillator with a high frequency of 120 THz

The concept of electro-magnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been extended in various subjects, frequency conversion with maximal coherence, ultra-slow light, sub-femto second pulse generation, and so on. Recently we have shown that the concept of EIT is applicable for solid system using a quantum solid (solid hydrogen) and shown generation of collinear parametric Raman scattering. Here we extend our previous work to a more general parametric Raman sideband generation. We show a large coherence of stimulated Raman scattering process in solid parahydrogen with two pump lasers. We modulate various probe lights, and efficiently and replicate the nature of these probe lights.

We show that the Raman coherence prepared with two coaxial single-mode lasers beats with multimode laser radiation with very broad bandwidth and efficiently replicates the broadband nature to the Raman sidebands without the restriction of phase matching. We demonstrate that this efficient replication occurs mainly on the negative side of Raman detuning, where the medium adiabatically follows the antiphased state.

The points are to incorporate coaxial end-pumping and self-seeding into the conventional grazing incidence geometry termed the Littman scheme (Appl. Opt. 23 (1984) 4465). It is shown that the present scheme can considerably reduce the pump threshold and realize higher output power with better stability than the conventional Littman scheme.

  • Raman gain measurement in solid parahydrogen

    OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 25, 3, 177-179, Feb. 2000, We report a steady-state Raman gain measurement of the Q(1)(0) transition (v = 1 <-- 0, J = 0 <-- 0) in solid parahydrogen. We carry out measurements by pumping with a continuous-wave frequency-doubled YAG laser at 532 nm and observing the direct amplification of a probe-laser beam for the first Stokes transition at 683 nm. A large single-pass amplification coefficient of 2.3 +/- 0.2 is obtained at a pump intensity of 46 kW/cm(2), with an interaction length of 1 cm, giving a steady-state Raman gain coefficient of 18 +/- 3 cm/MW. We show that the liquid hydrogen droplet readily leads to a high-cavity Q value exceeding 10(9) for whispering gallery modes, and that the SRS in the liquid-hydrogen droplet proceeds not only for vibrational transition but also for rotational transition as in the gas-phase H-2 system, leading to multiorder SRS sidebands covering the whole visible spectral range.

We show that multi-order SRS processes in solid hydrogen are governed by the anti-phased state coherence, and that the coherence reveals an extremely slow dephasing which may give a concrete basis on the strongly-coupled nonlinear optics using solid hydrogen.

  • Subfemtosecond pulse generation with molecular coherence control in stimulated Raman scattering

We show analytically that the antiphased state temporally advances the higher frequencies with respect to the lower frequencies during a beating cycle. After some propagation distance, due to the dispersion and the difference between the antiphased and phased states in advancing high or low frequencies, the coherence is highest on the negative side of the detuning, when the two-photon Rabi frequency is about equal to the detuning. This asymmetry of the coherence magnitude with respect to the negative and positive sides of the Raman detuning is reflected in the behavior of the tuning characteristics of the high-order frequency components. When the Raman detuning is small, although the process is nonadiabatic, the subfemtosecond pulse generation may occur for both negative and positive sides of the detuning. [S1050-2947(99)00908-7].

We show that the coherence decay for the Raman transition changes with the evolution of the SRS from the weak-coupling regime to the strong-coupling regime.

Two phenomena are described: One is the self-induced phase matching in parametric anti-Stokes stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in which the phase matching is self-organized automatically without the stringent restriction of refractive-index dispersion of the medium, and the other is the extremely slow coherence decay behavior for the Raman transition that may result in the Raman width of 80 Wt full width at half maximum (FWHM).

    PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 54, 2, 1551-1555, Aug. 1996, Peer-reviwed, The resonant multiphoton-ionization (MPI) processes in a strongly coupled atomic system have been investigated theoretically and experimentally using atomic hydrogen as a test medium. The characteristics are described with a parameter NL: the product of atom density and interaction length. The MPI characteristics exhibit a single-atom behavior revealing an Autler-Townes doublet in the low-NL region. In the high-NL region, the Autler-Townes doubler is suppressed to almost zero. This phenomenon is shown to be due to destructive interference between the excitation channels to the strongly coupled upper states. It is also shown that a narrow Doppler-free MPI peak appears at the split center of the Autler-Townes doubler in the high-NL region as a consequence of the strong coupling and the propagation effect.

  • Time- and space-resolved observation of population inversion in a He-like Al plasma pumped by fundamental and second-harmonic pulses of a Nd:glass laser

A massive slab Al target is irradiated by the fundamental or second-harmonic laser pulse from a Nd:glass system at a peak intensity of 8.5 +/- 0.9 x 10(14) W/cm(2). Population inversion are observed between the 4 and 3 levels of He-like Al for fundamental pumps and also between the 3 and 2 levels for the second harmonics. The origin of the 3-2 inversion can be attributed to the higher initial electron density of the plasma produced by the second-harmonic pump. A discussion of reabsorption effects of the resonance line is given. (C) 1996 Optical Society of America

Population inversion was directly observed between the n = 4 and n = 3 levels in He-like Al, and the correspondent numerical simulation well describes observed characteristics. Plasma evolution and their effects on inversion was shown on a Te-Ne map, and discussions on the optimum conditions based on the experiments and calculations are also given.     PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 52, 2, 1584-1593, Aug. 1995, The sum-frequency generation process using strong-field coupling and quantum interference is described systematically using atomic hydrogen both in theory and experiment. It is shown that strong coupling at the 3p-2s transition creates destructive interference to reduce the linear susceptibility at the resonant 3p<--1s transition. Simultaneously, two-photon coupling of the 2s and 1s states produces constructive interference to resonantly enhance the nonlinear susceptibility for sum-frequency generation at the 3p-->1s (Lyman-beta) transition. Experimental results clearly demonstrate the theoretical predictions. When the Rabi frequency for the 3p-2s coupling exceeds the Doppler tail of the medium, the photoion signals on resonance are suppressed significantly because of induced transparency. The generated Lyman-beta radiation grows rapidly by a factor of 250 at an atom density of 10(15) cm(-3) and interaction length of 3.5 cm, resulting in a conversion efficiency of 2 X 10(-4).

  • 地球とジオスペースをつなぐ鉛直物質輸送観測の新手法

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 挑戦的研究(開拓), 国立極地研究所, 挑戦的研究(開拓), 地球と宇宙の境界領域(高度80-150 km)は、大気が中性大気から電離大気(プラズマ)に変化する地球大気の遷移領域である。しかし、中性大気とプラズマ共に観測手段が限られており、同時観測が困難であるため、化学変化を伴うこの領域の物質輸送は本質的に未解明である。本研究では、この遷移領域において同一空間の中性原子とイオンの密度高度分布を同時に観測可能な世界初の原子・イオン共鳴散乱ライダーを開発し、地球と宇宙をつなぐ物質の鉛直輸送過程を解明することを目的としている。初年度である令和3年度は、送信レーザー開発班とライダーシステム開発班の二班体制で並行して装置開発を行った。送信レーザー開発では、チタンサファイア(Ti:s)レーザーをベースにした二波長同時発振・注入同期固体レーザーを設計・製作して、まずカルシウムイオン(Ca+)の共鳴散乱線(393.5 nm)での発振を確認した。共振器の調整により、発振の安定化を進めている。ライダーシステム開発としては、レーザーの発振波長の確認に用いている波長計の絶対精度を担保するために、カリウム原子を封入したセルを加熱してレーザー光を通過させたときに得られる蛍光スペクトルをモニターし、Doppler-freeと呼ばれる特定の波長で見られる飽和スペクトルを測定する絶対波長校正システムを構築した。また、受信分光系の設計を行い、製作を進めている。, 21K18315

  • 革新レーザー技術で拓くエキゾチック物質の量子操作

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 新学術領域研究(研究領域提案型), 電気通信大学, 新学術領域研究(研究領域提案型), 光量子科学はレーザーの極限化技術とともに互いに表裏一体をなし発展してきた。ほぼ全ての領域が開拓されてきたように見える一方で、レーザーの発明から60年を経た現代でも、全く手つかずのまま残されたレーザー技術の領域がある。真空紫外域(< 200 nm)における単一周波数・波長可変レーザー技術はまさにその一つである。 研究代表者は、非線形光学過程に人為的な制御を組み込むことで、この真空紫外域におい、現実に高分解能レーザー分光をおこないうる性能をもつ単一周波数・波長可変レーザーを実現することが可能なことを示してきた。これまでに原理実証実験もおこない、予測に一致する波長変換が可能なことも実証されている。 この公募研究では、ミューオニウムのレーザー冷却に焦点を当て、この技術をその目的にカスタマイズした真空紫外域単一周波数波長可変レーザーを実際に実現すること、さらに、それを用いたレーザー分光実験をおこなうことを目指している。 公募研究の初年度に当たる2021年度は、パラ水素分子気体を非線形光学媒質とする高次誘導ラマン散乱光発生過程を典型例として原理実証された結果を、高次過程に拡張する研究を進め、実際に数十%の効率で特定次数の誘導ラマン散乱光にエネルギー集中できることを実験的に示した。 また、並行してこの技術を真空紫外域に拡張するための様々な準備を進めた。技術的に鍵になるのは、励起レーザーに用いる注入同期単一周波数波長可変 Ti:sレーザーの周波数純度やビーム品質を良質な状態(端的には単一縦・横モード)に保ったまま、如何に高出力化するかという点にあった。実際にその開発を進め、従来に比べて、4倍近い出力が可能なレーザーを実現する目途が立つところまで到達できた。, 21H00165

  • Attosecond manipulation of electron tunneling at nanoscales

    Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Yokohama National University, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), 本研究では、連続波光源の光コムを合成することによって生成される超高繰り返し、位相制御アト秒パルスと走査型トンネル顕微鏡とを組み合わせ、アト秒時間領域の電子トンネル現象を誘起し制御することを目指し、研究を行ってきた。これまで、光電場を用いた電子トンネリング現象はテラヘルツ波や高強度のレーザーを用いて実証されてきているが、光領域での実証結果については議論のあるところである。これを可視光領域にスペクトルを持つ、位相制御アト秒レーザーで実現することにより、トンネル分光の超高速化を可能にすることを目指した。昨年度は、これまでに構築したアト秒STM装置を中心に光電場駆動のトンネル現象を明らかにする研究を推進した。特に、CWレーザーの合成波のみならず、パルスレーザーの合成波による電子トンネリング実験を試み、光電場によってもアト秒オーダーのトンネリングが誘起できることを実証することを目指した。このために、パルスレーザーと光第二高調波との合成波を照射し、誘起されるトンネル電流を観測する実験系を構築した。また、CWレーザー合成波の実験においては、熱の影響を取り除きつつ、光電場の影響を取り出すために、位相を高速で変調することによるトンネル電流の変化をロックインアンプを用いて検出する系を構築した。しかしながら、本研究により、位相制御によるトンネル電流の誘起効果を明確に観測することができなかった。特に熱によるトンネル電流の増加との切り分けが難しく、位相に依存した効果であることの実証が難しい状況であった。一方でシミュレーションを通して、トンネル電流がどの程度現れるかの計算を行い、ナノギャップの幅を小さくすれば、トンネル電流が観測可能となると考えられることが分かった。, 20H02653

  • Frequency-tunable vacuum-ultraviolet laser with an optical frequency standard precision

First, we developed the injection-locked continuous wave Ti:s laser which can emit a variety combinations of two frequencies. Next, to transfer an optical-frequency-standard precision to these two frequencies, we also developed the new optical technology which accurately divide an optical frequency into three. Furthermore, we have numerically shown that by employing such laser radiations, high-order stimulated Raman scattering process can be artificially controlled and a frequency conversion to a specific high-order Raman mode in the vuv region can be realized with near unity quantum conversion efficiency., 24244065

The most important result of the present research was an experimental proof of the principle with a two photon process from the vibrationally excited state of para-hydrogen molecules. Actually, the initial coherent states were prepared by an adiabatic Raman process, and two photon emissions were observed. As a result, a gigantic enhancement factor of the photon yields greater than 15 orders of magnitude was confirmed compared to its natural emission rate; it was found consistent with the theoretical prediction. Thus a big step has been made forward towards the neutrino mass spectroscopy with atoms.   • 光ディバイスのための無機有機ハイブリッド高非線形光学媒質の研究

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 特別研究員奨励費, これまで自由空間中でおこなわれてきたラマンサイドバンド光発生を、中空コアフォトニッククリスタルファイバー媒質中でおこなうことによって、格段に高い効率(およそ三桁)で実現できることを明らかにした(論文準備中)。効率が格段に上がったことで、これまで、液体窒素温度下(77K)でおこなわれていたこの動作を室温でおこなっても、従来に比べてほとんど遜色無い結果を得ることができるようになった.これは、開発した光源を他の様々な非線形光学物性研究に利用していくという視点でも極めて重要な進展である。ファイバーはカゴメ格子状の断面をもち、従来のフォトニッククリスタルファイバーに比べて、一桁以上広い透過帯域(400mm~2μm)を持っている。帯域は2オクターブ以上に渡るが、全ての波長に対して単一モード伝播特性が満たされるという極めて優れた特徴を有している。これは、このファイバー中で効率よく広帯域にわたる非線形波長変換を実現できることを意味しており、それによって、実際に、上記の結果を得ることができた。その後、これらの成果をアト秒域に達しうる極限的な超短パルス光発生に向けて発展させることを目的に、理論的な検討を開始した。アト秒域に至る超短パルス光発生が可能なことを、膨大かつ系統的な数値計算を実施して明らかにした(論文準備中)。残念ながら、研究期間の制限でこれを実験的に実証する段階にまでは到達できなかったが、理論の骨組みを構築し、かつ、それらをもとに実施した詳細な数値計算実験は、実際にこれを実験で実証するための準備として、充分なものとなった。, 09F09230

  • Generation of ultrahigh-repetition-rate ultrashort laser pulses in the continuous regime

Furthermore, we combined all of these elements established here and carried out the Raman sideband generation in the cw regime.   • 二波長発振注入同期ナノ秒パルスレーザーの高機能化

    産学が連携した研究開発成果の展開 研究成果展開事業 地域事業 地域イノベーション創出総合支援事業 シーズ発掘試験, 電気通信大学, Principal investigator, 注入同期の手法を用いて単一周波数化したナノ秒パルスレーザーは、狭いスペクトル幅(~MHz)と高い光強度(~MW)を併せ持つユニークなレーザーシステムである。産業用には、オゾン、CO2、エアロゾル等の環境関連計測や単一周波数波長可変テラヘルツ光発生などのキーテクノロジーとして利用されている。これらは多くの場合、異なる波長で発振する二台以上のシステムが組み合わされて用いられる。そのような用途においては、上記の利点の他方、それぞれのパルス間の時間・空間の不一致やその揺らぎが大きいことが測定精度上の深刻な障害であった。我々はこの問題を解決するために、二波長を同時に発振する注入同期レーザーシステムを考案し、“無調整”で異なる二波長のパルス間の完全な時間・空間のオーバーラップが実現されることを実証した。本試験研究の課題は、このシステムを実用化する上で鍵となる“二波長の広帯域連続周波数挿引化”を実施することにある。システム全体としては、ノートPC制御による いわゆる“ターンキー動作”が可能な完成度を目指す。

  • Establishment of Molecular Light Modulation and its Application to Ultrashort Pulse Generation

We summarize the main points of the achievments for this three-years-project. 1.Realization of ultrahigh frequency light-modulator at both 125THz (vibration) and 10THz (rotation) (This is equivalent to the realization of near-maximal coherence state such that all the molecules coherently oscillate.) 2.Generation of ultrabroad Raman sidebands which extends from near vacuum ultraviolet to infrared with a frequency width of 〜70,000cm^<-1>(〜2,100 PHz) 3.Generation of a train of 10-fs ultrashort pulses at ultrahigh repetition-rate of 10-THz with high stability as an actual light source by controlling the spectral phases of the broad Raman sidebands.   • Quantum Manipulation of Nuclear Spin of Ortho-H2 Molecule in Solid Hydrogen

    Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), We carried out the researches to establish a basis for manipulating nuclear-spin quantum-coherence of ortho-hydrogen molecule in solid hydrogen. Simultaneously, we developed a method to manipulate optical processes using optical nanofiber ; it was originally proposed to introduce a strong light into the solid hydrogen. Regarding the ortho-hydrogen project, we developed a highly-stable single-frequency cw laser at 2.4 μm wavelength using doubly-resonant OPO-technique. Ortho-hydrogen infrared transition (v=1-0, J=1-1) was measured systematically. We showed that the transition reveals an ultra-narrow spectral width of 1.6 MHz HWHM. This width is the narrowest width observed just using simple absorption spectroscopy, without using any nonlinear laser-spectroscopic method. Although density of ortho-hydrogen is very low 40 ppm, the peak absorption of 1-cm solid hydrogen crystal reaches to 60% ; it is due to the ultra-narrow spectral feature. We demonstrated also that the vibration-rotation spectrum splits into three components with splittings of about 10 MHz. The origin of the splitting may be understood due to breaking of magnetic degeneracy of J=1 state into three sublevels via crystal field. The observations have demonstrated that the ortho-hydrogen embedded in solid-parahydrogen is a unique system for realizing quantum coherence control in solid. The observed degeneracy breaking may open a new possibility to realize a new Raman three level scheme without magnetic field. Regarding the nanofiber, we established a method to produce nanofibers with diameter from 1μm to 400 nm with transmission of 80%. We showed theoretically a unique possibility to develop optical processes using nanofibers, very different from those in free space ; a key point is to confine both optical field and atoms/molecules into a submicron space around a nanofiber. We can manipulate single atom/molecule transition just using single photon. Moreover, spontaneous emission of atom/molecule near the nanofiber is strongly modified to emit photons into a guided mode of a nanofiber. We have observed experimentally the unique features of confinement in February of 2006. The observations imply that the nanofiber technique may open a new category of quantum optics., 15340131

  • Generation of single-frequency tunable vacuum ultraviolet laser radiation in solid hydrogen

We have tried to efficiently modulate single-frequency tunable laser radiations around 200 nm with extremely high Raman-coherence in solid hydrogen and generate single-frequency tunable laser radiations in vuv region. In the following, we summarize our principal results. 1, We have generated 201nm laser radiation by taking sum-frequency of 266nm- (forth harmonics of YAG laser) and 827nm- (Ti : sapphire laser) laser radiations with energy conversion efficiency of 〜10%. The pulse duration of the generated 201 nm laser radiation was 10 ns with the Fourier transform limited linewidth of 〜 30 MHz. 2, We have modulated the single-frequency tunable laser radiations at 201 nm by the Raman-coherence with the frequency of 125 THz that was adiabatically driven in solid hydrogen, leading vuv coherent radiation at 186 nm with quantum efficiency of 〜 8%. 3, We have demonstrated laser spectroscopy in vuv region for a transition in Schumann-Runge band (B ^3Σ_<-u> (v'=8, N'=20) ←X ^3Σ_<-g> (v"=0, N"=19), wavelength : 185.987nm) by using the coherent vuv radiation realized above. We have shown that the laser spectroscopy with spectral resolution of 〜 50 MHz is possible in vuv, leading the precise spectral profile and cross section of this transition., 13640398

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), 本研究の目的は、固体水素をラマン媒質として、超広帯域にわたる高次ラマン散乱光系列を発生させることにある。通常の高次ラマン散乱光発生と異なる点は、全てのストークス、アンチストークス光が位相整合条件に束縛されずに励起光と全く同軸に発生することにある。以下、本研究期間のこの2年間に得られた成果をまとめる。 1、バルクの結晶で確立した固体水素高品質結晶作成法(液相加圧結晶作成法)の技術を、薄膜結晶(1mm以下)に応用した。常温から液体He温度に向かう材料の熱収縮を考慮して、高圧(30気圧)下でも光学窓がシールされるように試料セルを設計し、1mm以下、数μmの薄さまで任意の厚みの薄膜結晶を作成する技術を確立した。 2、ラマンコヒーレンス生成用の励起レーザーとして、738nm及び、832nm(二倍波:416nm)を中心波長として発振する注入同期単一縦モードパルスチタンサファイアレーザーを製作した。パルス幅20ns〜90nsのロングパルスに対して、ほぼフーリエトランスフォームリミットの線幅(20ns->〜15MHz、90ns->〜3MHz)をもったパルス出力光を得ることができた。出力エネルギーは、最大13mJ(励起エネルギー45mJ)であった。 3、固体水素のQ_1(0)遷移(ν=1←0,J=0←0)にほぼラマン共鳴する単一縦モードパルスレーザー対((1)YAGレーザー基本波:1.064μm, Ti:Al_2O_3レーザー:738nm;(2)YAGレーザー三倍波:355nm,Ti:Al_2O_3レーザー二倍波:416nm)を時間空間的にオーバーラップさせて、厚み250〜300μmに用意した薄膜固体水素結晶に入射した。(1)の励起条件に対して、アンチストークス光の1次、(565nm)2次(458nm)3次(385nm)及びストークス光の2次(1.9μm)が、(2)の励起条件に対して、アンチストークス光の1次、(309nm)2次(274nm)3次(246nm)及びストークス光の2次(503nm)3次(635nm)4次(862nm)が、位相整合条件に束縛されずに励起光と全く同軸に(ガウス分布した空間パターン)をもって放射されるのが観測された。200MW/cm^2の励起強度に対して現状で得られている最大の変換効率は、アンチストークスの1次、ストークスの1次ともに15%程度であった。 研究を通して、当初計画した実験システムを確立し、また、パラメトリックな高次のラマン系列の発生が、位相整合条件に束縛されずに励起光と全く同軸に放射されるという現象の基本を確認することができた。より高次の光を効率よく発生させるために、固体水素結晶の損傷しきい値をあげなければいけないということが課題として残った。, 11740242

  • 固体水素高品質単結晶の製作とその評価

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), 固体水素は水素分子を単位とする量子固体で、その際立った特徴は、固体にもかかわらず振動、回転の自由度が孤立した分子のように良く量子化された状態であることにある。孤立した分子としてのシャープな共鳴特性と固体の密度を併せ持つという特徴は、従来の非線形光学媒質としては全く取り扱われなかった対象で、我々はここに着目して、従来の限界を超えた様々な非線形光学過程を見出すことを目的に研究をおこなっている。 本研究の目的は、非線形光学過程の研究に十分な品質をもった固体水素単結晶の製作方法を確立することにある。結晶成長は、液相から試みた。液相からの結晶成長は、従来からも三重点付近では可能なことが知られていたが、この時の最大の問題は、結晶を冷却すると収縮による結晶の破壊がおこることにあった。結晶の破壊は、冷却時に結晶がセルの中で負圧の状態に置かれることによる。本研究では、OKでも結晶が負圧の状態にならないだけの高圧(〜30気圧)を結晶成長の初期条件として与えることでこの問題点を解決することを試みた。高圧(30気圧)をかけて液相より成長させることにより、液体He温度(4.2K)においても光学的に全く透明な結晶を得ることに成功した。 結晶のサイズは、直径8mm、厚み10mmである。より定量的な結晶の評価は、振動励起状態の位相緩和時間からおこなった。コヒーレントアンチストークスラマン分光法で評価した位相緩和時間は、これまでに報告された値よりも2桁長い値(〜5μs)を示し、結晶の品質が格段に改善されたことを確認することができた。さらに、この技術をもとに薄膜の結晶を作ることを試みた。30気圧の高圧に耐えうる数十ミクロンの隙間を持った光学セルを、常温から低温への熱収縮を考慮して如何に設計するかがポイントであった。60ミクロンの厚み光学的に透明な薄膜固体水素結晶を作ることに成功した。この技術が確立したところで、10ミクロン以上、任意の厚みの薄膜結晶をつくることが可能になった。, 09740329

  • レーザー場による光学応答の制御 団体系への拡張

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 重点領域研究, 電気通信大学, 重点領域研究, 平成8年度よりレーザー場による光学応答の制御の研究を高密度の凝縮系;個体系、へ拡張する試みを開始した。作業物質として固体水素を用いることにより、孤立原子・分子系の量子性と固体の高密度性を兼ね備えた状況が実現し、水素原子系で実証してきた量子干渉効果を用いる非線形光学の研究が従来の原理実証の限界を越えて発展できる見通しを得た。 強結合を達成するための要点は、2光子遷移のラビ周波数がその遷移の位相緩和速度を越えることであり、そのためには系の位相緩和速度が遅いことが本質的に重要である。本年度においては、固体水素の振動励起準位の位相緩和速度をポンプ・プローブ型のコヒーレント反ストークスラマン散乱法により測定した。2台のレーザーを用い、1台のレーザーで誘導ラマンを立ち上げ、コヒーレンスを発生させ、もう1方のレーザーとそのコヒーレンスのビ-ト光を反ストークス光として測定した。測定は、通常の位相整合条件を満たす反ストークス光(リング)及び強結合に基づく自動位相整合反ストークス光(スポット)について行った。リングとスポットによる緩和の振る舞いは大きく異なり、スポットによる信号は緩和速度(ラマンのスペクトル幅)にして3MHzFWHMであるのに対し、リングの信号は3MHzFWHMから70kHzFWHMへと大きな変化を示すものとなった。この解釈はいまだ確定していないが、弱結合から強結合へ相互作用が発展するに連れて、励起状態の分子数密度が上昇し、それにより励起状態間の相互作用により緩和速度も速くなることを反映しているものと思われる。今回の結果は固体水素の振動励起状態の緩和速度が固体としては異例に遅いことを示すものであり、固体水素の強結合非線形光学の可能性を示すものである。また、緩和速度が変化するという結果は強結合へのシステムの発展を定式化する上で極めて示唆的である。, 09210206

  • 強結合下で多光子イオン化過程に現れる量子干渉効果の研究

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), 本計画の目的は、多光子イオン化過程に現われる量子干渉効果の基礎的物理的側面を明らかにし、非線形光学過程における多光子イオン化過程をも含めた"制御"の可能性を探ることにあった。 対象とした媒質は理論的に厳密な取り扱いが可能である水素原子である。基底状態1sと二つの上準位2s、3pとからなる水素原子の3準位系に対し、上準位2s、3p間を強いレーザー場によって強結合し、基底状態からこの強結合上準位系に2光子共鳴するレーザーによる多光子イオン化過程を観測した。Dressed Stateの位置では、2光子励起過程によるイオン化と発生した和周波光の再吸収過程によるイオン化の間に生じる相殺的量子干渉効果により、媒質密度相互作用長(NL)積の増加とともに、多光子イオン化信号がほぼ完全に消失するのが観測された。二つの多光子イオン化過程の間の位相関係は、二光子励起光と発生した和周波光の位相関係で決まるので、それをコントロールすることで、完全な相殺的干渉から相乗的干渉まで任意に多光子イオン化信号をコントロールできることがわかった。一方、二つのDressed Stateのセンター、つまり3p準位の位置では、NL積の増加とともに発生した和周波光による極めてシャープなイオン化信号が観測された。この信号の幅は、最終的に準安定準位2s状態の自然幅まで狭くなりうることから、3p準位の自然幅を越えた高分解分光に利用できることが副産物的にわかった。, 08740337

  • Baイオンを用いた反転分布の無いレーザーの研究

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業 奨励研究(A), 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), 原子系の光応答に対する感受率を外場(電磁場)により制御した新しいタイプの非線形光学過程とレ-ジングの研究をおこなった。真空紫外、または極端紫外領域で、高効率にコヒーレント光を発生させることを最終的な目的としている。基本的なアイデアは、既に水素原子を用いて、理論的実験的に本研究室で実証済みで、本研究の主たる目的は、このアイデアを重い原子系へ拡張することにあった。対象とした物質は、一価のBaイオンと中性Xe原子で、それぞれ水素原子の137倍、及び131倍重い。これにより、水素原子を用いた非線形周波数混合過程で、効率の向上を妨げていたドップラー広がりを10分の1以下に抑えることができた。 Baを用いた研究では、スピン軌道相互作用によりJ=3/2と5/2に分かれた準安定状態の第一励起状態5D_<5/2>と第二励起状態6P_<3/2>を強力な単一縦モードレーザー光でカップルし、6P3/2-5D3/2遷移の吸収プロファイルを観測した。5D5/2と6P3/2を強力にカップルしたことにより、系に生じた量子的干渉の効果を、AC Starkした吸収プロファイルの非対称性から観測することができた。Xeを用いた研究では、828nmの強いレーザー場によって強結合した5p^5(^2P_<3/2>)6p-5p^5(^2P_<3/2>)6sの上準位へ向かって、5p^6-5p^5(^2P_<3/2>)6pを2光子励起し、5p^5(^2p_<3/2>)6sから5p^6へ遷移する差周波光を発生させ系の基礎特性の測定をおこなった。差周波光強度の密度-相互作用長積依存性と、同時に発生する多光子イオン信号から、系に量子的干渉が生じ、非線形感受率の共鳴的増大と発生光に対する透明化が同時に実現できていることが確認できた。これらの研究を通して、水素原子で展開された研究の成果を重い原子系へ、拡張可能なことが実証できた。 ここで、本研究の実行にあたって、新しく、585nm、614nm、828nmの単一縦モード広帯域波長可変レーザーの開発をおこない、これを実験に用いた。これらのレーザーは、系の基礎的特性の測定には、十分な成果を上げることができたが、今後この系を用いて実際に真空紫外光を高効率に発生させるには、さらに線幅の狭い半導体レーザー等のレーザーをベースにしたパルスレーザーシステムが必要であることが再認識された。, 06740340
