  • Water Driven Soft Actuator

Soft actuators driven by various external stimuli, such as air pressure, temperature, pH, electric field, and light have been reported in the past. Although they are very attractive, they often require hard external devices for driving and the response speeds are often slow. The developed water driven actuator was with sodium polyacrylate wrapped by stretchable meshed nylon. Through some experiments, it was confirmed that swell and shrink phenomena of the developed device occur depending on the fluid flow. The phenomena could be found when adequate quantity of sodium polyacrylate was inside of the nylon. The amount of sodium polyacrylate that is required for the phenomenon was investigated. Through the experiments, it was confirmed that the displacement and the response speed of the swell and shrink were large and fast, respectively, in spite of its simple implementation.

Self-organization is the function or phenomenon of building an autonomously ordered structure from a simple part. Self-replication is the function or phenomenon of mass production of the same substance as the target substance. Both have convenience and inconvenience. In this paper, we report the design of a module that can self-organize and self-replicate to cover each inconvenience in a complementary style.   • Lightweight indestructible soft robot

Soft robots have soft bodies to adapt to various environments. They are expected to be crash-proof and to be utilized in unpredictable environments. Although many soft robots driven by pneumatic actuators are proposed due to the affinity between soft robots and the air, they require an external large-scale air pump to be controlled. It limits the applications of the soft robots to isolated environments. To solve the problem, we employed a wire-type artificial muscle and developed a lightweight, indestructible and soft robot. A bilateral filter is a nonlinear filter originally developed for images that can reduce noise while preserving edge information. It is an attractive filter and has been used in many applications in image processing. When it is applied to an acoustical signal, small-amplitude noise is reduced while the speech signal is preserved. However, a bilateral filter cannot handle noise with relatively large amplitudes owing to its innate characteristics. In this study, the noisy signal is transformed into the time-frequency domain and the filter is improved to handle complex spectra. The high-amplitude noise is reduced in the time-frequency domain via the proposed filter. The features and the potential of the proposed filter are also confirmed through experiments.   • Transformable device that can switch between rigid body and soft body

They have different features, and have merits and demerits, respectively. Robots with rigid body have high stiffness, and are suitable for carrying and holding objects. However, they may injure users if they make contact. Robots with soft body have high flexibility and can make contact safely. However, they have difficulty in retaining particular shapes and are fragile against external force. In this letter, we propose some devices that can switch between rigid body and soft body using phase change of low melting alloy to resolve the problems. They can form several structures like Origami, a Japanese paper art. We propose transformable plate wares as another application of sheet type transformable robots, and developed some prototype to show our scenario.

  • Psychological impact of direct communication and indirect communication through a robot

Emotion includes not only positive one but also negative one. Such negative emotion makes our communication worse in contradiction to our intention. To avoid such negative communications, we focus on indirect communication through a robot. In indirect communication through a robot, a user requests desired tasks to another user not by themselves but through a robot. If the robot is carefully designed, it is expected that users regard the robot as a client, and their emotions are directed not to the real client but to the robot. We developed a simple trash box robot and investigated psychological difference between direct communication and indirect communication through the robot. Throughout the experiments, negative emotion from the recipient was directed not to the human but to the robot via indirect communication.

Noise reduction is a key factor for robot audition. It requires some tuning depending on the environment, and we normally set the parameter of noise reduction system so that the error between the objective signal and the signal after noise reduction becomes minimal. However, the objective signal is usually unknown in practice, and the recognition rate is not always the best when the error is minimal. In this paper, spectral subtraction is selected as a simple noise reduction method to evaluate our approach, and the performance of the proposed method is investigated.

  • Development of an origami type robot to realize transformation and movement

Although some transformation robots, which can adapt to the environmental change, have been proposed in the pasts, the structure of the robot is complicated and the robot is relatively big due to using gears and motors. To solve the problems, we have developed an origami type robot to miniaturize the robot and to reduce its weight. To achieve the origami type robot, we have employed a new material named biometal. The expansion and contraction of biometal can be controlled by giving an electric current to it. We conducted some experiments and confirmed that the developed robot not only could transform its shape but also could move unlike previous origami type robots.

Although robots' previous notice is an important concept to secure users, it is difficult to plan previous notice because highly sophisticated robots are very complicated. To solve the problems, we have studied a single light based object announcement. In this paper, we especially focus on cooperative works between a user and a robot, and investigate a target object announcement by synchronous blinking of a robot and an object. Throughout the experiments, we confirmed that our approach can reduce scary emotions compared to the approach using only a light on the robot.

Recently, many robots to help people's daily life have been developed. Although many researchers and system designers aim to develop perfect robots to help people in daily life, such robots make users live a reactive life. On the other hand, some researchers developed robots that depend on users. The robots require users' assists to do their tasks and users become active due to its dependence like children. By the way, children not only require people's assists to do their tasks but also make some mistakes. In spite of their mistakes, people come to like children. Based on the idea from these types of interaction, we expect that users may have positive impression on the robot and we can realize continuous interaction when the robots not only need users' assists, but also make mistakes. To investigate our hypothesis, we developed a robot that sometimes makes mistakes. Throughout the experiments, users have more positive impression on the imperfect robot than the perfect robot when the robot behaves adequately after making mistakes.

  • Cognition-based parameter setting of non-linear filters using a face recognition system

The parameter setting problem is generally solved by the maximisation or minimisation of some objective evaluation functions such as correlation and statistical independence. However, the tuned filter output is not always adequate for face recognition systems because filter and system are separately tuned using different criterion. When a single image with noise is considered, it is difficult to employ such objective functions because only a single image exists, and the original image cannot be known. When the authors consider some problems such as contrast adjustment and non-photo-realistic rendering, it is also difficult to set an objective criterion for parameter setting because there are no correct solutions other than humans' subjectivity. To handle such cases, the authors look to some subjective information such as a face in an image, and directly employ a face recognition system as the evaluation function for parameter setting. Experimental results show that cognition-based evaluation has the potential to handle these types of problems.

Our aim is not only to set the parameter of self-quotient ε-filter but also to train SVM by using numerous images without noise and a small amount of images with noise.

To solve the problems, we pay attention to causality illusion, and aim to build a robot behavior model to build causality after events. In our previous works, we showed that users feel the causality between the robot and the environment by the post action of the robot after the events. In this paper, we investigate the influence of robot appearance, robot behaviors, and actuators on building causality. Experimental results showed that the difference of actuators and the difference of the behaviors of the robot influenced users on building causality after events.

Edge preserving smoothing is a fundamental feature extraction from the image for multimedia applications. e-filter is a nonlinear filter, which can smooth the image while preserving edge information. The filter design is simple and it can effectively smooth the image. However, when we handle the image under light variation, the contrast of edge part is low in low contrast area, while it is high in high contrast area. Hence, the existing edge-preserving filters cannot preserve the edge information around low contrast area. Our method solves this problem by combining self-quotient filter and e-filter. To confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted some comparison experiments on face beautification.

Bilateral filter is a promising nonlinear filter, which can smooth the image while preserving edge information. However, when we handle the images under light variation, the contrast of edge part is high in high contrast area, while the contrast of edge part is low in low contrast area. As bilateral filter basically uses the information of local intensity to preserve edge information, it is difficult to handle these types of images. It cannot preserve the edge information around low contrast area. Our method solves this problem by referring the self-quotient image instead of the original image in bilateral filter. To show the effectiveness of our method, we conducted some comparison experiments.

The authors, therefore, focus on the problem of the close object detection. We describe a methodology of designing a device for the close object detection and introduce a device for the close object detection. The performance of the device is also demonstrated through some experiments.

  • Balance Control of Humanoid Robot in Object Lifting Task with Tactile Sensing System

The key component is a control technique for balancing in the external forces. Our aim is to simplify the balance control during manipulation tasks by utilizing a real time tactile feedback instead of the complex ZMP calculations. We also present a tactile sensing system and an active tactile sensing technique to enable the humanoid robot to grasp an object and balance autonomously. In order to achieve a balancing task efficiently, the minimal sensing elements are employed with a specialized layout to the soles of each foot to detect the reaction force from the ground. The system effectiveness was confirmed by the experiments on humanoid platform to lift up the objects approximately in half and quarter of their body weight with single left arm. Throughout experiments, information about ground floor or robot orientation is not required in advance.

  • Application of cross TF ε-filter to impulse noise reduction

Cross TF e-fllter is an improved method of Time-Frequency ε-Alter (TF ε-Alter). It is already shown that it can reduce not only small stationary noise but also large nonstationary noise. However, the effectiveness for the impulsive noise is not veriAed. There are unexpected impulsive noise around us and they cause fatal effect for speech recognition system. In this paper, we describe the characteristic of the impulse noise and conArm the effectiveness of the cross TF ε-Alter to reduce it. The experimental results show that the cross TF ε-Alter can reduce not only succesive noise but also impulse noise.

We develop a prototype humanoid robot named Robovie-II and control system by iPad / iPod touch through TCP/IP connection to confirm the effectiveness of our approach.

The proposed tactile sensor units implemented on the robot hand consist of three thin sheets of force-sensitive resistors arranged triangularly with the peripheral circuits. One potential application of the proposed techniques is to realize an effective human-robot cooperation to move an object together by utilizing the control of a hand pose to keep the direction of the hand normal to the object surface in three dimensions, which is often necessary when pushing an object. Another is a 3-D object edge tracing. The proposed techniques can be employed in industrial processes such as welding and inspection to eliminate manual teaching procedures for searching the object edge automatically before doing the welding process. In these applications, information about the object shape or orientation is not required in advance.

  • Band-pass ε-filter for edge enhancement and noise removal

Unfortunately, its computation time is relatively large since all pixels are subjected to Gaussian calculation. To solve this problem, we pay attention to a nonlinear filter called e-filter and propose an advanced E-filter labeled band-pass epsilon-filter. As epsilon-filter has low-pass characteristics due to spatial filtering, it does not enhance the image contrast. On the other hand, band-pass E-filter does not have low-pass characteristics but has band-pass characteristics to enhance the image contrast around edges unlike epsilon-filter. The filter works not only as a noise reduction filter but also as an edge detection filter depending on the filter setting. Due to its simple design, the calculation cost is relatively small compared to the band-pass bilateral filter. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we report the results of some comparison experiments on the filter characteristics and computational cost.

  • Automatic parameter optimization in ε-filter for acoustical signal utilizing correlation coefficient

It can reduce not only stationary noise but also nonstationary noise. However, it has some parameters whose values are set empirically. So far, there have been few studies to evaluate the appropriateness of the parameter settings for epsilon-filter. This paper employs the correlation coefficient of the filter output and the difference between the filter input and output as the evaluation function of the parameter setting. This paper also describes the algorithm to set the optimal parameter value of epsilon-filter automatically. To evaluate the adequateness of the obtained parameter, the mean absolute error is calculated. The experimental results show that the adequate parameter in epsilon-filter can be obtained automatically by using the proposed method.

  • Feature extraction from noisy face image using self-quotient ε-filter

Self-quotient filter (SQF) is a simple filter defined as the ratio of the input image and its smoothed versions. It is light invariant, and can clearly extract the outline of the object from the image independent of shadow region. However, when the image includes not only signal but also noise, SQF cannot extract the feature clearly. To solve the problems, we look to ε-filter and design self-quotient ε-filter. By defining self-quotient ε-filter as the ratio of two different ε-filters, we can extract the feature not only from facial images without noise but also facial images with noise. Experimental results show that the proposed method can clearly extract face features such as eyes, nose and mouth from noisy facial images. © 2010 IEEE.

On the other hand, SQEF can extract the feature not only when it is applied to the clear image but also when it is applied to the noise corrupted image. In this paper, we especially focus on feature extraction from impulse noise corrupted image, and investigate the effectiveness of self-quotient epsilon-filter to impulse noise corrupted images.

  • Cognition-based contrast adjustment using neural network based face recognition system

Parameter setting problem is generally solved by maximization or minimization of some objective evaluation functions such as correlation and statistical independence. However, the tuned filter output is not always adequate for face recognition system because filter and face recognition system are separately tuned using different criterions. It is also difficult to set an objective criterion for parameter setting because there are no correct solutions when we consider contrast adjustment problem. To handle such cases, we look to some subjective information such as face in the image, and directly employ facial recognition system as evaluation function for parameter setting. Experimental results show that cognition-based evaluation has a potential to adjust the image contrast.

Parameter setting problem is usually solved by maximization or minimization of some objective evaluation functions such as correlation and statistical independence. However, when we consider a single-channel noisy signal, it is difficult to employ such objective functions. It is also difficult to employ them when we consider impulsive noise because its duration is very small to use this assumption. To solve the problems, we directly use a speech recognition system as evaluation function for parameter setting. As an example, we employ time-frequency e-filter and Julius as a filtering system and a speech recognition system, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed approach has a potential to set the parameter in unknown environments.

  • SVM-based human detection combining self-quotient ε-filter and histograms of oriented gradients

Although human detection combining HOG and SVM is a powerful approach, as it uses local intensity gradients, it is difficult to handle noise corrupted images. To handle noise corrupted images, we introduce self-quotient epsilon-filter (SQEF), and implement it in human detection combining HOG and SVM. SQEF is an advanced self-quotient filter (SQF), and can clearly extract features from the images not only when they have illumination variations but also when they are corrupted with noise. The new approach gives a robust human detection from noise corrupted images using the data trained by intact images without noise.

Although SQF is a simple approach for feature extraction from the images, it is difficult to extract the feature when the image includes noise. On the other hand, SQEF can extract the image feature not only from clear images but also from noise corrupted images with uniform noise, Gaussian noise and impulse noise. We show the algorithm of SQEF and describe its feature when it is applied to uniform noise corrupted image, Gaussian noise corrupted image and impulse noise corrupted image.   • Walking on the Slopes with Tactile Sensing System for Humanoid Robot

We introduce a novel method of walking pattern generation by applying the proposed technique to the biped humanoid robot. Our aim is to simplify the walking control by utilizing a real time tactile feedback instead of the complex ZMP calculations. We employ the minimum number of sensing elements with a specialized layout to the soles of robotic feet to enable the robot to walk on different uneven grounds. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by walking experiments with a 17 degree-of-freedoms, DOFs humanoid robot platform. The experiments show that the robot can perform balanced walking on the upward and downward slopes. In these experiments, information about ground floor or robot orientation is not required in advance.

  • Cognition-based approach to parameter setting of directional difference filter using neural network based face recognition system

It does not employ order statistics unlike median filter and can reduce impulse noise effectively. However, it has some parameters and we need to set them appropriately based on empirical control. So far, there are few studies to evaluate the appropriateness of the parameter setting of DDF. Parameter setting problem is generally solved by maximization or minimization of some objective evaluation functions such as correlation and statistical independence. However, it is not always easy to set such objective evaluation functions because we only have a single-channel noisy signal in DDF, and therefore it is difficult to evaluate whether the parameter is optimal or not. On the other hand, even when we cannot employ objective assumptions, we sometimes know that an image includes some subjective information such as face. Based on the above prospects, we directly use a neural network based facial recognition system as evaluation function for parameter setting of DDF. Experimental results show that cognition-based parameter setting has a potential to set adequate parameters of DDF. ©2010 IEEE.

The filter design is simple and it can effectively reduce noise with an adequate filter parameter. This paper presents a method for estimating the optimal filter parameter of epsilon-filter based on signal-noise decorrelation and shows that it yields the optimal filter parameter concerning a wide range of noise levels. The proposed method is applicable where the noise to be removed is un-correlated with signal, and it does not require any other knowledge such as noise variance and training data.

It can reduce most kinds of noise while preserving a signal that varies frequently such as a speech signal. The filter design is simple and it can effectively reduce noise. It is applicable not only to small amplitude stationary noise but also to large amplitude nonstationary noise. However, when the filter is applied to the noise that varies much frequently along the time axis, TF epsilon-filter cannot reduce noise without the signal distortion. This paper introduces an advanced method for noise reduction that applies epsilon-filter to complex spectra not only along the time axis but also along the frequency axis labeled cross TF epsilon-filter. It can reduce the noise where the neighboring frequency bins have similar powers. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, some comparative experiments are also given, such as the performance of noise reduction and the robustness concerning input signal-to-noise ratio and parameter changes. However, when the acoustical array combining microphones and piezoelectric devices is employed, it is necessary to estimate the gains of microphones and piezoelectric devices concerning the system that generates the noise in advance. The aim of this paper is to simplify this process, that is, to reduce internally generated noise without preknowledge concerning the gains of microphones and piezoelectric devices. Although the proposed method handles an anechoic mixing, it has some merits that complement the other typical blind source separation algorithms. In this paper, the problem is first formulated. The assumptions and the methodology of the proposed method are then given with some experimental results.

We have already reported a blind separation method based on the change ratio of frequency components. However, it cannot handle a signal with frequency fluctuation such as a speech signal or a vibrato tone, because such type of signal is regarded as the mixture of different sounds. Our new method proposed in this paper can handle a sound with frequency fluctuation by tracking frequency peaks along time axis. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated with some experiments on real voice data.

A microphone array system has been utilized in various scenes. However when we utilize the microphone array system in life space, the problem of back ground noise arises. Although the back ground noise is not always stationary, statistically independent or disjoint, the amplitude of the noise is usually small compared to the desired signal. Based on the aspects, we Pay attention to a nonlinear filter called bilateral filter and apply it to an acoustical signal. Bilateral filter is known as a nonlinear filter for the image. It smoothes images while preserving edges. We improve bilateral filter for an acoustical signal and evaluate the performance of bilateral sound denoising. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce not only the stationary noise but also the nonstationary dependent noise.

  • A Simple Tactile Sensing Foot for Humanoid Robot and Active Ground Slope Recognition

A tactile sensor unit implemented on the robot foot consists of three thin sheets of force sensitive resistors arranged triangularly with the peripheral circuits. The proposed tactile sensing foot can detect the ground slope for natural foot pose motions and keep the direction of the foot normal to the ground floor surface. The realized function will assist the biped walking to balance on the different contacted ground slopes such as, flat level surface, up, down, left and right slopes. In these applications, information about the contacted ground floor or orientation is not required in advance.

The proposed sensors are implemented on two robotic foots. The sensor unit contains three thin sheets of force sensitive resistors. Those elements are arranged triangularly on the back of each foot. The research objective is to produce an artifact, which can be operated in a natural and intuitive manner by utilizing the haptic information to control a robot motion to keep the balance on the different contacted ground slopes with their both legs. As a possible application, we also attempted to let the robot avoid the failing down due to the external force by the unpredicted pushing action apply to the robot during human-robot interaction. In these applications, the information about the contacted ground floor or robot orientation is not required in advance.

The features of our approach are summarized as follows: (1) The proposed method handles internal noise reduction of the acoustical array combining microphones and a piezoelectric device in the time domain. (2) It can reduce the internal noise from each microphone even when the number of the sounds and noise is larger than that of the acoustical sensors. (3) It does not utilize the statistical independence of the sounds. The sounds may be not only the statistically independent but may also be statistically dependent. (4) It handles the partially disjoint sounds in the time domain. The sounds may overlap in the frequency domain. (5) It does not require to estimate the intervals when sounds are disjoint. We formulate the problem and show the methodology of the proposed method. Experimental results are also demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The algorithm is simple and it has many applications because it uses only switching and linear operations. Although it is difficult to reduce the impulse noise by using epsilon-filter due to its features, we can reduce the impulse noise effectively with preserving the edge information by combining the concept of median filter and epsilon-filter. Due to its simple design, the calculation cost is relatively small the same as epsilon-filter. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we also report the results of some comparative experiments concerning the filter characteristics.

It does not employ order statistics such as median filter but employs directional difference in the local area. As it considers the edge information in the local area, it can reduce the impulse noise with. preserving the image information compared to the other methods. However, it still requires a noise detector as pre-processing to aroid the image blur. In this paper we took to the concept of a nonlinear filter labeled epsilon-filter and propose an improved directional difference filter which can reduce the impulse noise with preserving the original image information without pre-processing. We also show the experimental results to evaluate the performance of the proposed method compared to other methods.

  • Automatic parameter optimization of ε-filter for acoustical signal based on cross correlation

It can reduce not only stationary noise but also nonstationary noise. However it has some parameters whose values are set empirically. So far there are few studies to evaluate the appropriateness of the parameter setting of epsilon-filter In this paper we employ the correlation coefficient of the filter output and the difference between the filter input and output as the evaluation function of the parameter setting. We also show the algorithm to set the optimal parameter value of E-filter To evaluate the adequateness of the obtained parameter we calculate the mean absolute error The experimental results show that we can obtain the adequate parameter in e-filter automatically by using the proposed method.

  • Parameter optimization of median ε-filter based on correlation maximization

It does not require the learning process of signal and noise models. The algorithm is simple and the calculation cost is small because it requires only switching operation. However, it requires the empirical operation to set the appropriate parameter of median epsilon-filter. There is also no criterion to decide the optimal parameters. This paper therefore presents an optimal parameter estimation of median epsilon-filter based on correlation maximization. Experimental results are also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The filter design is simple and it can effectively reduce noise with an appropriate filter parameter. However, it requires the parameter setting to reduce the noise effectively, and the parameter settings are empirically executed. To solve the problems, we employ the criterion based on signal-noise decorrelation and propose a method to optimize the parameter of e-filter automatically. The experimental results are also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The conventional microphone array has widely been utilized to realize a noise reduction and Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation system. However, when the microphones are mounted to robot systems, the microphones are set extremely close to the robot Then, the problem of internal noise from robots such as motors and gears arises. It is difficult to reduce the internal noise utilizing the conventional microphone array because the noise source is extremely close to the microphones. As the internal noise is not always stationary or sparse, we also can not employ useful blind source separation (BSS) approaches such as Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and sparseness approach. The aim of our research is to reduce the internal noise by utilizing the piezoelectric devices attached on the internal noise source. In this paper, we formulate the problem combining microphones and the piezoelectric devices and describe the proposed algorithm for noise reduction. Experimental results show that our proposed method can reduce the internal noise.

It can reduce most kinds of noise while preserving a signal that varies frequently such as a speech signal. The filter design is simple and it can effectively reduce noise. It is applicable not only to small amplitude stationary noise but also to large amplitude nonstationary noise. However when we consider the noise that varies much frequently along the time axis, TF epsilon-filter cannot reduce noise without the signal distortion. When we consider the noise where the neighboring frequency bins have similar powers such as impulse noise, we can reduce the noise by using epsilon-filter applied to the complex spectra not along the time axis, but along the frequency axis. This paper introduces an advanced method for noise reduction that applies epsilon-filter to complex spectra not only along the time axis but also along the frequency axis labeled cross TF epsilon-filter. We conducted the experiments utilizing the sounds with stationary, nonstationary and natural noise.

However, when the acoustical array combining microphones and piezoelectric devices are utilized, it is necessary to estimate the gains of microphones and piezoelectric devices concerning the internal noise source in advance. Our aim is to simplify this process. In this paper, we formulate the problem and show the methodology of the proposed method. Experimental results are also demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The tactile sensor unit implemented on the robot hand consists of three force-sensitive resistors arranged triangularly. The unit not only can detect the reactive force from the object but also determine the orientation of the object surface. Our research goal is to realize an effective robot controller for the 3D object handling. As a possible application, we also introduce an effective human-robot cooperation to move an object together. This application is realized by a control of a hand pose to keep the direction of the hand normal to the object surface in 3-D, which is often necessary when pushing an object. We also show the experimental results using the proposed sensor unit.

The tactile sensor torch implemented on the robot hand consists of two automatic swap functions. One is tactile sensing for object edge detection with three thin sheets of force sensitive resistors arranged triangularly. Another is a simulated welding torch with moving mechanisms. One potential application of the proposed tactile sensor torch is a hand pose control for searching the object edge automatically. Another is a 3-D object edge tracing. The proposed techniques can be employed in industrial processes such as welding and inspection to eliminate manual teaching procedures. In these applications, information about the object shape or orientation is not required in advance.

Exposing a film for a certain time, we can directly photograph the trajectory of the moving object as an edge in a blurred image. As the edge trajectories are not exactly the same but similar to the optical flows. they allow us to treat the edge image as a pseudo-vector field. We define three line integrals in the edge image on closed curve similar to vector analysis. These integrals correspond to three flow primitives of the scene such as the translation. rotation and divergence. As the images, we utilized some images such as the storm, the bottle rocket and a moving object with random patterns. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we conducted the experiments of estimating the eye of the storm, the center of the explosion in terms of bottle rocket, and the centers of the rotation and divergence of the moving object.

  • Cloud classification of satellite image performed in two stages

Many researches utilizing various features concerning the cloud texture have been reported in cloud classification. However, some clouds can not be classified uniquely only with the texture features. According to the knowledge of the experts, they classify the clouds in two stages. They firstly categorize the clouds into the provisional classes according to the brightnesses of the satellite images. They then classify each provisional class into the objective class based on the texture, shape and velocity of the cloud employing the meteorological knowledge about the time and location of the image. In this paper, we propose a novel method for the cloud classification that consists of two stages and utilizes cloud movement as human experts adopt. We firstly classify the clouds into 20 classes based on their brightnesses of the two-band spectral images. We then closely analyze the classes according to five features such as the brightnesses, deviations of brightness and cloud velocity estimated by varying window size adaptively. The experimental results are shown to verify the proposed method.

  • A design of self reproducing hardware

Self assembly or self organization is an attractive subject in a variety of research fields such as mechanics, chemistry and physics. Especially, if hardware self reproduction is realized, revolutionary changing will occur in the industrial world. Hardware self reproduction is a kind of self assembly to obtain the same kinds of hardware as the objective hardware from the simple elements automatically. It seems to us that the best case of success regarding self reproducing is the method of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), that is, semiconservative replication. We, therefore, aim at developing the design method of self reproducing hardware by imitating the semiconservative replication of DNA. Based on the aspects of the semiconservative replication of DNA, we classified the interaction of the hardware and elements into three modes, namely Assembly mode, Connection mode and Division mode. We show that we can realize self reproduction of hardware by combining these three modes. To clarify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we also show the concrete examples of the self reproducing hardware. The proposed self reproduction can be realized by controlling only the temperature and stirring in the environment.

The tactile sensor implemented oil the robot hand consists of three force sensitive resistors with the peripheral circuits. The robot arm equipped with the sensor can perform active object recognition. Our research goal is to realize an effective robot controller for the 3D object handling. An additional final aim is to produce "artifacts" that is a kind of artificial creature, which enables to cooperate works between human and machine (robot) in a natural and intuitive manner. Throughout these works, we aim to realize a harmonized human-machine environnient. The two examples of applications of file proposed tactile sensor are also introduced. First is a hand pose Control to keel) the moving direction normal to the object, which is often required in pushing all object for positioning. This application call be used for human-machine interaction tasks. Next is :I hand pose and motion control for 3D-object edge tracing, which is required for industrial use such as welding machines and welding inspection. In these applications, we need no information about object shape or orientation in advance. We also show three experimental results using file proposed sensor unit. The system and results of experiments are presented.

These three primitives can be detected utilizing line integral and surface integral according to the knowledge of vector analysis. In this paper, we introduce a method for extracting these three primitives utilizing edges in an image based on vector analysis, namely edge field analysis. The edge has the information of inclination. However, the edge has no information of the direction unlike vector. Hence, line integral and surface integral can not be directly applied to detect these three primitives utilizing edges. We firstly formulate the problem and describe the algorithm for detecting the three primitives in vector analysis. We then propose an algorithm for estimating three primitives regarding edge image as pseudo-vector field. For illustration, we apply edge field analysis to quasi-motion extraction and feature extraction. We also show the experimental results in terms of estimating the center of the flowers, the cell body of neuron, the eye of the storm, the center of the explosion and so on.

We have already showed that the phased microphone array and the aggregated microphones can be described within the same framework. We have also showed that it is possible to apply the aggregated microphones to the various methods of the phased microphone array. However, the difference of the performance between the phased array and the aggregated microphones has not been evaluated yet. The effect of the directivity and the posture of each microphone on the performance of the aggregated microphones has not also been evaluated yet. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of DCMP (Directionally Constrained Minimization of Power) adaptive array utilizing aggregated microphones.

  • Quasi-motion extraction utilizing edge field analysis

In order to recognize the motion in the images, it is significant to distinguish three motion primitives as translation, rotation and divergence that can be extracted based on the optical flow. In this paper, we introduce a method for extracting quasi-motion utilizing edge flow in one image, namely edge field analysis. In general, the optical flow is estimated utilizing two or more successive images. On the other hand, this method directly estimates translation, rotation and divergence not utilizing two or more images but utilizing only one image without the information of the optical flow of the motion. We firstly formulate the problem of extracting the motion primitives as a vector field analysis of the velocity vector field. We then propose an algorithm for estimating three motion primitives from one image regarding edge as pseudo-velocity vector. The experimental results in terms of estimating the eye of the storm, Whirlpool Galaxy and the center of the explosion are also demonstrated to evaluate the proposed method.

Recently, some authors proposed sound separation algorithm utilizing sparseness of the sounds. In these methods, we can extract each signal using the time-frequency binary masks. However, these method can not separate the sounds if the sounds overlap in frequency domain due to the sparseness assumption. In this paper, we treat the problem of separating not only the sounds which hardly overlap but also the sounds which overlap in most of frequency domain. It should be noted that we need to know neither the directivities of two microphones nor the overlapping frequency components in advance. In this paper, we describe the necessary conditions and the algorithm of the proposed method. Some experimental results show that the proposed method can separate not only the sounds which hardly overlap but also the sounds which overlap in most of frequency domain.

In this paper. we firstly show that the microphone array system and the proposed aggregated microphone system can be described in the same framework. We then apply the minimum variance method to the method that utilizes the transfer characteristics of the microphones placed at a same location and compare the performance of the proposed method with the microphone array. It is easy to miniaturize the system because all of the microphones are placed at a same location. This feature is considered to be useful in the practical applications. The experimental results obtained in an ordinary room are shown to verify the validity of the proposed method.

In this paper, we firstly show that the microphone array system and the proposed aggregated microphone system can be described in the same framework. We then apply the PIAA method to the aggregated microphones and compare the proposed method with the microphone array. In the proposed method, all microphones are placed at the same place. Hence, it is easy to miniaturize the system. This feature is considered to be useful in the practical applications. We show the directional pattern of the PIAA utilizing aggregated microphones. We also show the results of the DOA estimation.

  • ソフトロボティクス技術を組みこんだ空中散布可能な災害支援ロボットの技術基盤の構築

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 基盤研究(B), 本研究では近年大きな注目を集めるソフトロボティクス技術を組みこんだ空中散布可能な災害支援ロボットの実現を目指し,ソフトロボティクスに関する申請者の過去の研究成果を踏まえ,材料特性,剛性制御,形状設計,駆動原理,動力確保など多面的な観点から課題解決の可能性を検討している. 今年度は初年度に購入した粘度計や引張試験機,実験評価,および,解析のための計算機,ロボット作成や材料加工のために利用する3Dプリンタなど資材を利用し,基盤技術に関する検討を進めた。申請者がこれまでに開発してきた折り紙ロボットをベースとした空中散布機構とその歩行形態への変形,衝突時に機構的に力を逃がす構造の実装,ダイラタント流体による剛性制御,生体模倣による自己修復機構,天然材料のみを構成材料として利用した非電気駆動ロボットなどの複数の研究テーマについてそれぞれ一定の進展があった. 折り紙ロボットをベースとした空中散布構造については植物の翼果の構造を模倣し,回転落下を実現するため物理モデルの作成と落下速度に与える開発プロトタイプの物理パラメータの抽出、翼角に応じた落下速度の違いに関する検証実験を行った.落下後の変形についても検討を加え,地上での移動実験についても検証した. 機構的に力を逃がす構造については柔軟素材による衝撃吸収効果と動作による衝撃吸収効果の相乗効果を狙い,それらを組み合わせた衝突回避の手法について検討を加えた.ダイラタント流体においては,流体の制御による粘度制御の可能性について調査した.生体模倣による自己修復については生物の血液による凝固とそれによる修復を模倣した自己修復機構について検討を行った., 20H02412

  • 非電気系により駆動する自壊型ロボットによる侵入不可能領域の構造物補修の実現

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 挑戦的研究(萌芽), 本研究では従来型ロボットが侵入不可能な領域の構造物の補修に焦点を当て,非電気系により駆動する自壊型ロボットによる侵入不可能領域の構造物補修の実現をその目標として定め,非電気駆動アクチュエータにより駆動し,自らの構造そのものを修復材料として用いる自壊型ロボットの実現可能性を明らかにすることを目的としている. 前年度に行った音波を用いたロボットを動かすための動作原理の調査と駆動周波数の特定結果,および,この現象を利用した非電気駆動で水上利用可能なロボットの設計とその挙動について国際会議で発表を行った. また、自壊ロボットの実現のため、アルギン酸ナトリウムと乳酸カルシウムのゲル化反応によるプロトタイプとゼラチンのカプセルに修復材を入れたプロトタイプを作成し,その修復性能について調査した.これらの成果については国内会議で発表を行った. また、前年度の実験では実現できなかった地上でのロボットの駆動に向け、共振を利用した音波駆動型アクチュエータの駆動に関する検討を行った.実験ではアクチュエータの駆動源となる共鳴器の共振周波数について理論・実験双方から検討を行い、その周波数の特定を行った.また、この共振周波数でのアクチュエータの挙動についていくつかのプロトタイプを設計し、地上での前後への往復運動や直進運動の実現可能性について調査した.実験の結果,地上でのロボットの駆動についてその可能性を示唆する結果が得られた., 20K21020
