- On the Text Critique of the Kaikendai no Ho

UECコミュニケーションミュージアム研究紀要, 電気通信大学, 3, 1-53, Oct. 2023, Peer-reviwed, The subject of this paper is a bibliographical textual criticism of all 75 manuscripts of the Kaikendai no Ho (解見題之法 ). It also presents their annotations. As a result, the present author identifies the manuscript in Yoshisuke MATSUNAGA's (松永良弼 , ? - 1744) possession as the archetype and establishes a stemma among the manuscripts. This paper also clarifies that there is no bibliographic evidence that this book was authored by Takakazu SEKI (関孝和 , ? - 1708).

電気通信大学紀要, 電気通信大学, 35, 1, 23-35, 01 Feb. 2023, Peer-reviwed, This paper introduces the system of arithmetic education in Daigaku-ryo (大学寮), an educational institution established to train bureaucrats in 8th century Japan. In particular, the author argues that Japanese Imperial Court did not completely adopt the educational policy given by the Tang Dynasty to various arithmetic textbooks. Second, the paper points out that Akihira Fujiwara’s (藤原明衡, 990? – 1066) Unshu Ourai (雲州往来) used arithmetic terms derived from Sunzi Suanjing (孫子算経).

電気通信大学紀要, 電気通信大学, 34, 1, 7-16, 01 Feb. 2022, Peer-reviwed, This paper once again introduces one traditional Japanese mathematical book, Kenki Sanpo (1683) by Katahiro Takebe (1664 - 1739). In this book Takebe solved a problem of area of segment utilizing the approximate formula for the length of arc reduced as a result of polynomial interpolation. The author poses the hypothesis to reconstruct Takebe’s formula, which the formula has close resemblance to the minimax approximation polynomial.

This monograph is a collection of 48 problems as to various geometrical figures. The most notable article among them is the description of land survey utilizing the cross-staff. The author points out the establishment of this European instrument in Japan found during the 17th century.
Japanese - 日本最古の数学遊戯書としての『棊盤上』について

電気通信大学紀要, 電気通信大学, 32, 1, 23-33, 01 Feb. 2020, Peer-reviwed, This paper introduces a mathematical puzzle book, Gobanjo, rediscovered on 2008. The radiocarbon dating on this book suggests that this puzzle book had been written on 15th century, which could be the oldest mathematical book in Japan. The Gobanjo shows us 6 types of puzzle utilizing go stones. The author summaries and translates these 6 types of puzzle into modern Japanese, i.e. Hyakugogenzan (Chinese Remainder Theorem), Shihoseki (counting the sides of square), Tonitarazu (addition and subtraction), Sassadate (simultaneous equations), Metsukeishi (guessing a hidden go stone), and Jugodate (3×3 magic square). Hitherto, as we had some knowledge about these puzzles except Metsukeishi, the author presumes the reconstruction of Metsukeishi utilizing the transposed matrix.

This license, Teppo Hiden Bassho (鉄砲秘伝抜書), was issued by both SAWAMURA Kakuemon (澤村 角右衛門) and his son, Naiki (内記) to TSUBOTA Sataemon (坪田 左太右衛門). In this license, Sawamura family showed 6 correspondence tables as their school secret, listing the relationship between the weight of gun-powder and the musket shot. The author reveals that SAWAMURA family was higher-class feudal retainer of Hikone Clan, reffering their genealogy edited by the order of Lord Ii (井伊).

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 基盤研究(B), (1)研究代表者の佐藤賢一は、『洋学史研究事典』を編集刊行した。特に「宗門改役」の項目において、北条氏長『攻城 阿蘭陀由里安牟相伝』の原本がAdam Freitag, L'architecture militaire ou La fortification nouuelle(1635)であることを明らかにした。他に、「建部賢弘『研幾算法』による弓形の弧長の導出式の復元について（続）」において、建部による弓形の弧長を求める公式が、最良近似多項式に類似していることを明らかにした。「伊能忠敬と会田安明」では、会田安明が残した記録に伊能忠敬の実測記録を補う山岳の標高データが記載されていることを確認した。 (2)研究分担者の梅田は、論考「近世宗教史における陰陽道」「近世陰陽道研究の成果と課題」「近世社会における「暦」」を発表し、近年の陰陽道史の研究動向を総括し、さらに展望を提示した。 (3)研究分担者の平岡は、前述した『洋学史研究事典』に「沢野忠庵」他を執筆した。論考、”Deciphering Aristotle with Chinese Medical Cosmology: Nanban Unkiron and the Reception of Jesuit Cosmology in Early Modern Japan”と「長崎歴史文化博物館収蔵「伊能図」」を発表し、南蛮天文学(南蛮運気論)と長崎歴史文化博物館所蔵伊能忠敬地図に関する書誌学的成果を報告した。 (4)代表者・佐藤、分担者・梅田、平岡、橋本雄太の4名でシンポジウム「開陽丸引き揚げ文書について 幕府天文方と開陽丸」(洋学史学会)を開催した。開陽丸遺跡から引き揚げられた古文書が、幕府天文方に由来することを明らかにし、各文書の内容分析とその分析手法の紹介を行った。, 18H00641

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Tokushima, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), In this research project, we verified the types of Japanese paper, coloring material, needle holes at the surveying point, and description contents of Tadataka Inoh’s cartography and survey maps of Japan, using high-definition image data and non-destructive inspection methods. As a result, it was found that various types of Japanese paper were used in the maps presented to Daimyos (i.e., feudal lords), the copies of the submitted maps, and the draft maps, and that coloring pigment was frequently used in the presented maps to symbolize directions (i.e., the compass rose). In addition, the results of the analysis of the needle holes revealed the differences in survey precision during the survey period, the relationship between the draft maps and presented maps, and the advanced technique used for making Inoh’s maps., 18H03603

(1) About 2000 titles of Japanese mathematics were found from the archives of Japan Academy. (2) We found the documents of Ikadai family in the Museum of Kobe City, which contains the manuscript of Ichino Shigetaka, Takahashi Yoshitoki, and so on. (3) In order to construct the database of the materials of traditional Japanese mathematics, we counted the number of items relating to Jaoanese mathematics in the catalogue, Kokusho Samokuroku (Tokyo, 2nd ed., 1989-1990 ). (1) By means of tracing SEKI's genealogy, it has been definitely shown that his little brother Nagaaki was born in 1661. Therefore the inferior limit of SEKI's year of birth is fixed. (2) We investigated the roll of certification of Japanese mathematics awarded in 1705 (now in Japan Academy's possession). It is very doubtful whether this roll was granted to his disciple by SEKI himself, because the seal on the roll is not SEKI's but his follower Sonei ARAKI's. (3) Investigating the Archives of the Imperial Household Agency (Tokyo), we rediscovered a hand-written copy of Ketsugisho Tojutsu which is the authorship of SEKI., 13680001
