  • Unidimensional-hierarchy in value-intention scale: An application of item response theory
    K Sakai; A Yamaguchi; M Hisano
JAPANESE JOURNAL OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY, JAPANESE ASSOC EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY, 46, 2, 153-162, Jun. 1998, Peer-reviwed, Item response theory was applied to Value-Intention Scale being developed on the basis of Spranger's (1966) theory according to six types of values (theoretical, economic, aesthetic, religious, social, political). Each of the six subscales corresponding to the six values made various items. Some represented extreme ideal state (ideal type) and some represented more general traits (standard type). When two parameter logistic models were applied to the subscales, if both types of items showed unidimensional, their characteristic curves were supposed to be parallel owing to differences on a difficulty level. We named such parallelism ''unidimensional-hierarchy''. From each of the six subscales, a pa ir of items unidimensional-hierarchical was selected, showing also evident differences in real response rates. Furthermore we examined the individual subjects' explanations for the responses to the items in order to clarify the contents which had determined the statistical characteristics of the items. The qualitative analysis proved that items showing higher difficulty levels contained contents harder to perform, and representing more advanced, ideal states of the value-intention.

  • CONSTRUCTION OF VALUE-INTENDING MENTAL ACT SCALE
    SAKAI Keiko; HISANO Masaki
The Japanese Journal of Educational Psychology, The Japanese Association of Educational Psychology, 45, 4, 388-395, 1997, The purpose of this study is to constract a scale to measure value-intending mental acts, characterized by six types of values (theoretical, economic, aesthetic, religious, social, political) originally proposed by Spranger (1921). A typical test based on Spranger's classification of values, i. e.,“Study of Values” (Allport et al., 1951), relates only the socio-cultural objects to which individuals feel the value, without treating the way in which individuals feel the value. Our scale is made to measure the latter subjective experience (“mental act”) itself. Basing upon personal interviews and preliminary survey, 54 items (6 mental acts X 9 items) are selected and administered to 493 college students (292 male and 201 female). With factor analysis, six subscales are extracted from those items to construct a Value-Intending Mental Act Scale. Relations of this scale, focused on subjective mental process of valuation, with preference between school subjects and vocational interest, are regarded as objective manifestations of the subjective processes making the object of a discussion.

  • The availability of personality in the hierarchical structure : An exploration of the "basic level".
    山口陽弘; 久野雅樹
The Japanese Journal of Psychology., The Japanese Psychological Association, 67, 3, 195-203, 1996, Peer-reviwed, Personality traits have a structure that is hierarchically organized in terms of trait abstractness. Which level of the hierarchy is most available to the person perceiver? We started out with four levels, and tried to determine which was most available and therefore became the "basic level", as in the Rosch, Mervis, Gray, Johnson, and Boyes-Braem's natural categories (1976). Two methods were employed. First, rating of trait descriptiveness showed that information effectiveness was relatively high at the second level from the top. Second, subjects preferred the same level when they described target persons. These results suggested that a "basic level" indeed existed in the hierarchy of personality traits. However, social desirability of traits and who the target person was also affected the results. Implications are discussed about theories of cognitive style, especially cognitive complexity, which assume the generality of our cognitive system and have been in confusion with contradictory findings.

  • A study of hierarchical structure in personality traits: Asymmetry judgments in category breadth and class inclusion
    A Yamaguchi; T Kawahara; M Hisano
JAPANESE JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGY, JAPAN PSYCHOL ASSOC, 66, 5, 345-353, Dec. 1995, Many personality theorists postulate a hierarchical structure in trait words. However, most evidences are indirect, mainly because the theorists rely on factor-analytic methods. Assuming a global structure, the factor approach is not necessarily adequate to investigate concrete relationship among trait words. In this study, we used two direct measures to study the hierarchical structure: direct comparison of breadth and asymmetry class-inclusion judgment on trait concepts. Results of three experiments in general confirmed robustness of the hierarchical structure in the domain of personality traits. Traits were organized in the structure at several different levels of abstractness. But the structure was fuzzy in nature, unlike the taxonomy in biology. It was also found that inter-relations among traits could vary considerably from individual to individual. Cognitive complexity may be one of the variables that explain such an individual difference.

  • Test of Question-Answer Interaction Development
Hiromi Toyama; Masaki Hisano; Hiromi Chinen; Tsuneo Satake
The Japan Journal of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, 35, 4, 338-348, 1994, We deviced a “Test of Question-Answer Interaction Development” in order to assess the communication ability of preschool level children from a pragmatic point of view. This test is especially useful to for evaluating the developmental state of language-retarded and hearing-impaired children and for creating an intervention program. The test consists of ten tasks: ordinary questions, riddles, hypothetical inferences, category-instance production, word definition, causal explanation, ordered explanation, explanation of sequential picture cards, story telling and auditory discourse comprehension. We administered the test to 165 normal children from 2 to 6 years of age and analyzed the data statistically. Here, we present the basic statistics of the test and discuss its reliability and validity. A table was compiled to estimate developmental age based on total and task scores. A profile chart is also given. © 1994, The Japan Society of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. All rights reserved.

  • Characteristics and Stages of Question-Answer Interaction Development in Normal Children
Tsuneo Satake; Hiromi Toyama; Hiromi Chinen; Masaki Hisano
The Japan Journal of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, 35, 4, 349-358, 1994, Peer-reviwed, We constructed a “Test of Question-Answer Interaction Development” and administered it to 165 normal children from 2 to 6 years of age. Qualitative analyses were made of their response utterances. The children age 2: 0–2: 5 characteristically showed no response or responses determined by nearby situations. Gradually the amount of utterances increased and responses became redundant in children age 2: 6–3: 5. The children of this stage often showed typical errors: responses bounded by their narrow experiences, responses influenced by association, and responses outside the topic. 4-year-old children seldom showed errors typical of this earlier age. They were able to keep to a topic and made well-regulated answers. Children age 5–6 considered the listener’s knowledge and offered adequate amounts of explanation. These results suggest that there are four developmental stages of communicative ability focusing on question-answer conversation: (a) 2: 0–2: 5 the stage of no response or responses determined by nearby situations
    (b) 2: 6–3: 5: the stage influenced by personal expriences and associations
    (c) 3: 6–4: 11: the stage in which the semantic network is built
and (d) 5: 0–6: 11: the stage of meta-communication. © 1994, The Japan Society of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. All rights reserved.

  • A study of fMRI measurement of brain activities for the understanding of sound symbolism and common senses
    TANAKA SHIGERU
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, To identify active brain regions representing subjective impression expressed by Japanese onomatopoeias based on sound symbolism, we performed fMRI measurements in response to auditory and visual presentations of onomatopoeias. Although we obtained typical patterns of brain activities when onomatopoeias were presented, we did not detect statistically significant differences in fMRI signals between onomatopoeias and standard adjectives and/or adverbs. This result suggests that each onomatopoeia has acquired its own niche in the semantic space spanned by Japanese vocabularies at the same level of adjectives and adverbs, and hence does not have a special characteristic other than the fact that it has emerged from sound symbolism., 26540141

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Gunma University, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Before a compulsory education system for foreign children is started, we must prepare for such a situation by changing our educational environment to administer the system properly. Based on our related research, we concluded the following, a part of which has already been administered by local governments. (1) An educational system in which foreign children can learn Japanese language before entering school is indispensable. (2) Before foreign children and their parents come to Japan, parents should at least understand the Japanese school system to ease preparations to receive children from overseas. Our research group revised the explanatory booklet that was originally published by Ota Asahi Elementary School, Gunma, Japan, and informed the public about it. (3) In light of the accumulated Japanese language teaching experiences at an elementary school in Sakai, Isesaki, Gunma, our research group published a basic Japanese textbook for children : Yattemiyou! Nihongo Kantan. (4) When special-needs schools or classes accept foreign children, the schools and classes must be prepared to communicate in the children's native language. (5) Irrespective of the children's and their parents' expectations of whether they are going to return to their country or stay in Japan permanently, it would be effective for them to be informed during the elementary school years how valuable it is for the children to attend high school. (6) It is necessary for foreign children's parents who have just come to Japan to receive a clear explanation of differences between Japanese school culture and South American culture, such as the costs of school lunch meals and course materials, and ways to regard their children's athletic events. Furthermore, it is desired that parents receive explanations from principals that a school is not a day-care center for children. In situations when only one foreign child's parent, especially the mother, is foreign and is unable to communicate in Japanese, some problems about the child's language and academic ability might occur. To prevent such cases, we must construct a support system. (7) Pursuing an ideal program of teacher training for those who are in charge of foreign students, a member of our research group at the Professional School for Teacher Education of Gunma University recorded the graduate courses in multicultural symbiosis and published it in report form. We also attempted a comparison of the contents of such education at the Gunma University with that at the Aichi University of Education., 18330163

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The National Institute for Japanese Language, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Japanese language learners always have difficulties to learn Kanji in foreign countries. We have tried making a resource of Kanji learning, and developing a system to provide it all over the world by WWW. There are a number of barriers to the dissemination of information in Japanese, including the difficulty of learning to read the complex writing system of Japanese, as well as the technological difficulty of processing and displaying the thousands of characters used to write Japanese. The system we have developed in this project displays Japanese text using 90,000 GIF image files, thus allowing one to view arbitrary data in the Japanese language using any Internet browser with a graphical interface, thus avoiding the need to install any specialized Japanese software. A part of this system has been applied and accepted in a national project by the Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry. These results show that our study has not only academic value but also political views., 12680235

  • Examination of cross-modal priming effect in the phoneme level

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, RIKKYO UNIVERSITY, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), This research demonstrates syntactic effects in resolving lexical ambiguity in Japanese, an S-O-V language. In particular, the effect of a postpositional particle on the semantic access of sentence-final ambiguous verbs in two kinds of sentences, (a) S-ga-V sentences (subject, subjective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb) and (b) O-wo-V sentences (object, objective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb), will be demonstrated. In this research, The postpositional particles are designed to disambiguate the verbs' meanings as (a) S-ga-Vi. (intransitive verb) or (b) O-wo-Vt. (transitive verb). A cross-modal priming method was used in which a target noun was visually presented by Kanji characters one-syllable before the end, or immediately after the end, of a sentence-final verb presented auditorily. One target noun was related to both the prime verb's meaning and the postpositional particle used (context-dependent), while another target noun was related to only the prime verb's meaning, but it was unrelated to the postpositional particle used (context-independent), and a third target was unrelated to both of the verb's and the particle's meaning. For this analysis, we hand coded the data of naming latencies based on digital spectrograms of subjects' voices, because the voice key measure has been considered unsuitable to measure naming latency accurately. This research has been pursued with reference to the constraint-based lexicalist approach. The parallel distributed processing (PDP) models (connectionist models) of disambiguation are well suited to implement this constraint-based lexicalist view that human natural language understanding involves constraint-satisfaction mechanisms. We performed a computer simulation of this experiment using our PDP model. Consistent with experimental data, the PDP model can successfully simulate the effect of context-dependent and context-independent frequencies of ambiguous verbs in the time-course of activation., 10610085
