    Halobacterium Salinarum is a baterium which thrives in extremely high salt concentrations. In the cell membrane of Halobacterium Salinarum, photo-receptor protein that proceeds photosynthesis exists. This protein is called "bacteriorhodopsin", because it resembles rhodopsin, the visual pigment of animals. Similar to visual pigments, bacteriorhodopsin exhibits high quantum efficiency, i.e. it responds to a single phton in room temperature; it has visual information processing function such as edge detection and motion detection. Our major research area includes: development of optical sensors adapting bacteriorhodopsin; application to quantum optics; and nonlinear spectroscopical analysis of living Halobacterium Salinarum.

  • High Performance Organic Solar Cells Fabricated Using Recycled Transparent Conductive Substrates

    ACS SUSTAINABLE CHEMISTRY & ENGINEERING, AMER CHEMICAL SOC, 8, 14, 5807-5814, Apr. 2020, The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has been gradually increasing over the past years, but these emerging photovoltaic devices still suffer from relatively short lifetimes. To promote circular economy and reduce costly electronic materials wastes, we explore the possibility of recycling durable zinc oxide coated indium tin oxide (ITO/ZnO) from nonfullerene OSCs through sequential ultrasonication in a series of solvents followed by thermal annealing. With the adequate cleaning sequence, the recycled ITO/ZnO substrates produce PCEs of 8.65%, a value comparable to the PCEs obtained with freshly prepared substrates (8.73%). Our results also indicate that isopropanol gradually removes the zinc oxide layer and should thus be avoided when attempting multiple successive recycling of the same substrate. ITO/ZnO substrates recycled 10 times with and without isopropanol yield PCEs of 5.14% and 7.93%, respectively. By optimizing the recycling procedure, we introduce a simple strategy to considerably increase the lifecycle of transparent electrode substrates employed in organic electronic devices and decrease the amount of wastes from the electronic industry.

  • Controlling quantum interference in phase space with amplitude

    SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 7, 22291-1-22291-6, May 2017, Peer-reviwed, We experimentally show a quantum interference in phase space by interrogating photon number probabilities (n = 2, 3, and 4) of a displaced squeezed state, which is generated by an optical parametric amplifier and whose displacement is controlled by amplitude of injected coherent light. It is found that the probabilities exhibit oscillations of interference effect depending upon the amplitude of the controlling light field. This phenomenon is attributed to quantum interference in phase space and indicates the capability of controlling quantum interference using amplitude. This remarkably contrasts with the oscillations of interference effects being usually controlled by relative phase in classical optics.

  • Characteristics of pulse width for an enhanced second harmonic generation

    OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 387, 241-244, Mar. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Temporal characteristics of a cavity enhancement second harmonic (SH) generation for picosecond laser pulse are investigated. We experimentally measured pulse width changes that were indued by group velocity mismatching (GVM), SH process, and enhancement cavity. It indicates that the generated pulse width is a combined effect of the GVM and SH process. Meanwhile, the effect of the enhancement cavity can be avoided by controlling its free spectrum range. A interferometric autocorrelator with a KBBF-PCD as nonlinear crystal is also composed and this extends the measurement light wavelength below 410 nm.

  • Directionally selective motion detection with bacteriorhodopsin patterned sensor

    SYNTHETIC METALS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA, 222, 249-254, Dec. 2016, Peer-reviwed, A compact and low-cost motion detector based on a light-sensitive protein bacteriorhodopsin is fabricated. We show that a single photocell, which is masked with a pattern, can detect the speed and direction of a moving light without complex software algorithms. When light scans the patterned sensing area, the edges of each pattern produce polarity-reversed photocurrents depending on the light bar's speed and direction. Owing to the asymmetry of the pattern, we can detect two or four directions of the moving light. We intend to exploit this unique property in gestural manipulation with a laser pointer or fingers for remote control systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Low intensity noise and narrow line-width diode laser light at 540 nm

It consists of a noise suppressed external cavity diode laser at a wavelength of 1080 nm by optical filtering and resonant optical feedback, and a frequency doubling of the fundamental light with an a-cut KTP crystal. Highly efficient conversion is realized by type II non-critical phase matching. A stable single-frequency operation with a maximum power of about 20 mW is performed for more than 3 h. Both the intensity noise and line-width reach the level of a monolithic nonplanar ring laser, which is well known for its extraordinarily narrow line-width and extremely low noise among available single-frequency operating lasers.

  • Generation of tripartite quantum correlation among amplitude-squeezed beams by frequency doubling in a singly resonant cavity

    PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 91, 2, 023833, Feb. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We present a technique for generation of tripartite quantum-correlated amplitude-squeezed light beams, using frequency doubling in a singly resonant cavity with two output ports. The two-output second-harmonic (SH) beams are both nonlinearly coupled to the common fundamental beam even though they have no direct interaction. The nonlinear coupling produces noise reduction of amplitude for each beam and quantum correlations among three beams. In our first experiment, we measured amplitude squeezing of 0.5, 0.8, and 0.6 dB for the fundamental beam and two output SH beams, respectively. Meanwhile, quantum correlation of 0.6 dB between the two amplitude-squeezed SH beams and quantum anticorrelation of 0.6 and 0.8 dB between the squeezed fundamental beam and each of the SH beams were observed around the range of optimum conversion efficiency. This opens an alternate way to produce tripartite-quantum-correlated systems.

Optical excitation of bR at an electrode-electrolyte interface generates differential photocurrents while an incident light is turned on and off. This unique functional response is similar to that seen in retinal neurons. This paper describes the fabrication and evaluation of the dip-coated bR thin films, photocurrent characteristics, and biomimetic artificial retinas with the bR thin films.

  • Generation of quasi-cw deep ultraviolet light below 200 nm by an external cavity with a Brewster-input KBBF prism coupling device

Two frequency-doubling stages were taking place in resonant cavities that can enhance conversion efficiency of second harmonic generations (SHGs). To reduce the extra-loss of the resonant cavity, a Brewster-input KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) prism coupling device (PCD) was designed and employed in the second stage SHG for the first time. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

  • Generation of 1.2 W green light using a resonant cavity-enhanced second-harmonic process with a periodically poled KTiOPO4

    OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 294, 271-275, May 2013, Peer-reviwed, We report on frequency doubling of a single frequency cw Nd:YAG laser at wavelength of 1064 nm using a periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal (PPKTP) placed in a single resonant ring enhanced cavity. A maximum output power of 1.23 W, corresponding to 72% of conversion efficiency with 1.7 W of fundamental power, was achieved. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest power obtained at this wavelength with PPKTP crystal in an external enhanced cavity. The output power is continuously stable with a peak to peak fluctuation of less than 1% over 4 h owing to optimum design of an enhanced cavity; moreover, the setup is inherently simple and robust. Therefore, it is suitable to be a light source for quantum optics experiments. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Optical excitation of bR at an electrode-electrolyte interface generates differential photocurrents while an incident light is turned on and off. This unique functional response is similar to that seen in retinal neurons. The bR-based bipolar photosensor consists of the bR dip-coated thin films patterned on two ITO plates and the electrolyte solution. This bipolar photocell will function as a biomimetic photoreceptor cell. The bipolar structure, due to the photocurrent being generated in alignment with the cathodic direction, makes the excitatory and inhibitory regions possible. This scheme shows our bipolar cell can act as a basic unit of edge detection and forms the artificial visual receptive field.

  • Efficient phase noise suppression of an external-cavity diode-laser by optical filtering and resonant optical feedback

A suppression of more than 40 dB phase noise was obtained for the first time using these methods. It made that the phase noise of the ECDL reached shot noise level from 15 MHz. This opens a new way to reduce the phase noise of diode lasers.

Two frequency-doubling stages take place in resonant cavities that can increase conversion efficiency. This allows an overall efficiency of 4.3% and produces an output power of up to 60 mW. In the second stage, in which a KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) crystal was employed as a nonlinear medium, conversion efficiency is increased by about three times compared with that of the single-pass configuration. In the first stage, UV light at 399 nm with power of 1.1 W was obtained by exploiting an enhanced cavity. With a KBBF crystal as nonlinear material, quasi-continuous-wave VUV coherent light with power of about 25 mW at 199.5 nm and 4.7 mW at 193.5 nm were achieved through a single-pass SHG configuration, respectively, in the second stage. For a polarization modulation recorded in the organic material bacteriorhodopsin, the diffraction efficiency and the diffracted wave polarization strongly depend on the polarization state of the readout wave. We have given a simple theoretical treatment using the Fraunhofer diffraction integral. The experimental results have been interpreted in terms of this simplified model. The experimental result shows a weak angular selectivity in a volume hologram on bR.

Two-dimensional original data are encoded as a two-dimensional polarization distribution. The polarization state at each pixel is scrambled by a mask that changes the polarization state into a random state. The mask can rotate the direction of the principal axes of the elliptically polarized light and can change the phase retardation at each pixel. The light with the random polarization state is stored as a hologram that can produce the vector phase-conjugate beam. In the decryption the vector phase-conjugation readout can recover the original polarization state by use of the same mask used in the encryption. Experimental results of encryption and decryption with a bacteriorhodopsin film are presented. Society of America.

  • Second- and third-order non-linear optical properties of multilayered structures and composites of C-60 with electron donors

    SYNTHETIC METALS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA, 117, 1-3, 189-193, Feb. 2001, Peer-reviwed, Second- and third-order non-linear optical properties of C-60 based multilayered charge transfer structures with TPP, TPD and TPN molecules, acting as electron donors, are studied by the transverse optical second and third harmonic generation techniques. The studied structures are of ABABAB... and ABCABC... type, where layer A is made from electron accepting molecules (C-60), layer B from electron donating (TPN. TPD or TPP) and layer C from neutral molecules (MgF2). The typical thickness of individual layers is about 2 nm. A significant increase of SHG is observed in ABCABC... type structures, where an effective charge transfer is expected with creation of a non-centrosymmetry in the perpendicular direction to the layers. The largest chi ((C)) (-2 omega;omega,omega) susceptibility is obtained with multilayers containing rubrene (TPN). The SHG generation experiments performed on thin films with different thicknesses show that the non-linear optical response comes from the bulk material and not from the interfaces. A quadratic dependence of SHG intensity on input power is also observed, showing that the charge transfer takes place at the ground state. This fact enables to realize pattern detection with polarization. The method is reported better capability to discriminate gray-level images. It has been formerly reported that we have implemented the polarization coding and polarization spatial filter using liquid crystal spatial light modulators with phase modulation and optical rotatory power. In recent years the use of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) as a holographic recording material has been studied intensively. BR films are sensitive to polarization because the BR is the photoinduced anisotropic material. In this paper, we propose the possibility of bacteriorhodopsin films for polarization spatial filter and investigate simplification of pattern detection system with polarization information.

  • Autocorrelation of picosecond pulses in bacteriorhodopsin film using light self-diffraction from intensity and polarization holograms

The autocorrelation is performed in geometry of light self-diffraction from polarization as well as intensity gratings at very low average illumination intensity (approximate to 6 mW/cm(2)). By comparing the determined coherence time tau(C) = 5.0 ps with the laser pulse duration tau(L) = 6.6 ps, obtained by the intensity autocorrelation technique, we estimate a chirp parameter of the laser pulse b tau(L)(2) = 0.86, which points out rather small phase distortions of the pulse. Broadband absorption of the film in a visible spectral range and a low-cost technology of its preparation, together with the possibility to record polarization and intensity gratings, confirm advantages of the bacteriorhodopsin (BR) film as a novel medium for the field autocorrelation.   • Numerical analysis of real-time holography in bacteriorhodopsin

The method calculates the propagation of writing and reading beams in bacteriorhodopsin films using the finite-differential beam propagation method. The changes of the films in refractive index and absorption are deduced from rate equations for B-state and M-state molecules. We apply this method to a real-time holographic lens and calculate the spot profile on the focal plane and the diffraction efficiencies for various parameter values. The results are compared with those obtained on pristine and vacuum-photolyzed C-60 thin films. Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is observed from composite films containing C-60 molecules. A significant enhancement in SHG signal is observed in the multilayered structures. This result is interpreted in terms of a ground state permanent electron transfer from the electron-donating molecules to C-60.   • Intensity fluctuation of a pulsed planar microcavity laser

Two microcavities were used, one operating possibly with a single mode and the other possibly with a number of modes. These expectations are based on the relative magnitude of the mode radius and the pump beam radius. In the former cavity an exponential-like distribution was observed below threshold, which indicates single-mode operation. In the latter cavity a single-peaked distribution appeared even below threshold indicating multiple-mode operation. These results are, respectively, in qualitative agreement with theoretical distributions for steady state. That the observed pulse width is large enough to apply steady state distribution equation is shown by calculating the characteristic transient time for the intensity distribution. We demonstrate exclusive OR operation with polarization properties of the phase conjugate (PC) beam in degenerated four-wave mixing (DFWM). Also, real-time image subtraction and addition can be performed by transmitting two mutually orthogonal polarized phase conjugate beams through an analyzer.

The results are compared with those obtained from pristine, photolyzed in vacuum and in oxygen atmosphere C-60 thin films. Second harmonic generation is observed from structures containing C-60 molecules. An enhancement of the quadratic susceptibility is observed from the multilayered structures. The third harmonic generation experiments show an enhancement of the cubic susceptibility from photolyzed C-60 thin films. No increase of chi((3)) in the multilayered structures or composites is observed. A slightly larger response is obtained with the multilayered thin films as compared to the composite material.

We derived the polarization state and reflectivity of the phase conjugate beam in degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) where two pump beams have the same or orthogonal polarization and a probe beam has arbitrary polarization. Theoretical results are proved by experiments.

This is the first example of the system with duality in nonlinear systems. The double exponential lattice can be extended to multi-component systems where the parameters characterizing the potential and the momentum are not uniform. In a small-amplitude limit, the double exponential lattice is reduced to the usual exponential lattice. It is shown that the exponential lattice composed of different mass particles is dual to that composed of the interaction with different parameter b in such a limit.

We have stccessfully developed a reading machine which realizes the reduced bit-error-rate as low as 10-6 without adding too complex servo control mechanism. Based on their achieved hardware BER of 10-6, overall BER of 10-11 is anticipated with the help of error correction code technique. © 1987 SPIE.

    Principal investigator, 本研究の目的は,視覚機能タンパク質が示す 正負の極性反転微分応答を,視覚系ニューロン受容野 の興奮性と抑制性応答 に読み替えた視覚受容野型の情報処理素子を作製し,アナログ画像処理に適 用することである.対向する透明電極の内側両面に,タンパク質を選択的にパターニングするだけと いう非常にシンプルな方法で,視覚細胞の活動をモデル化したガウシアン差分 (DOG) 型と Gabor 型 フィルターを作製する,材料自身が太陽電池機能と微分・たたみこみ演算機能をもつため,電源や外 部回路が不要で,電極を一組しか用いない一画素アナログ演算素子が実現できる.この素子を用いて リアルタイムでエッジ検出と方向検出を行い,デジタル画像処理演算量の大幅な低減を試みる.

    Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) is a photoreceptor membrane protein extracted from the cell membrane of Halobacterium salinarum which lives in saline lakes. Irradiation of bacteriorhodopsin on the interface of electrodes and the electrolyte generates a time-differential photocurrent, which results in a signal that responds only to changes in the intensity of light without the need for an external power supply. By using two types of bR with different optical response characteristics, the optical flow detection known as a visual information function of an insect is attained.
