IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E89C, 10, 1395-1399, Oct. 2006, Peer-reviwed, A high-speed drive technique is introduced in which addressing is done by eliminating, instead of accumulating, the wall charges. In the proposed scheme, wall charges are accumulated in all the cells in advance, and then the address discharges take place in selected cells to eliminate the wall charges. Sustain discharges are generated in these cells. In order to realize the proposed address scheme, re-designing of a setup waveforms was necessary. The data pulse of 1.33 mu s wide and 84 V was realized in a Ne+10%Xe PDP. A contrast of 3,600:1 was obtained by providing one setup period in a TV field.

The emission persists for 10 hours or even longer. In order to detect an extremely weak emission, a measuring technique was introduced in which trains of pulses are repetitively applied in order to amplify the number of the electrons. The address discharges of PDPs can reliably be ignited as long as the reset pulses are applied at least once every 10s for 3.5% Xe, or once every second for 30% Xe due to the priming action of the exoelectrons. The reduction of the number of the reset pulses improves the dark room contrast by orders of magnitudes. It can be concluded that MgO in PDPs has three important roles

The voltage that yields the efficiency peak increases as the frequency is reduced and Xe content is increased. The optimums Xe content, for a Ne+Xe mixture was found to be 70% considering the efficiency, luminance, and required sustain voltage. The peak green efficacy of 5.0 lm/W and luminance of 3000cd/m(2) were obtained at 333kHz and 290V sustaining, with 5% duty in an addressed condition.

  • Monte Carlo simulation of imprisonment of Xe resonant photons and luminous efficiency considerations of colour plasma displays
    T Shiga; S Mikoshiba
JOURNAL OF PHYSICS D-APPLIED PHYSICS, IOP PUBLISHING LTD, 37, 8, 1221-1227, Apr. 2004, Peer-reviwed, A Monte Carlo model of imprisonment of Xe resonant photons and electronic de-excitation of the Xe resonance level, Xe*, in ac colour plasma displays is developed. The number of resonant photons arriving at phosphor are calculated for various discharge cell heights, discharge thicknesses, Xe mixture ratios, current pulse widths, and drive frequencies in 67 kPa Ne + Xe mixtures. From the calculations, it was found that only 23.2% of the total Xe* participate in generating photons, which arrive at the phosphor under a typical electron density of 5.0 x 10(19) m(-3). Photons from 22.5% Xe* reach the front glass plate where phosphor is not deposited, and 54.3% of Xe* are de-excited by electronic collisions. Driving the discharge cells at low current density is one of the effective methods of reducing the de-excitation loss. Optimized drive conditions, such as a narrow current pulse drive, can suppress the luminous efficiency degradation. An increase in the height of the discharge cell is preferable provided that the discharge fills the space.

  • High-frequency drive of high-Xe-contertt PDPs for high efficiency and low-voltage performance
Tetsuo Minami; Tomokazu Shiga; Shigeo Mikoshiba; Gerrit Oversluizen
Journal of the Society for Information Display, 12, 2, 191-197, 2004, Peer-reviwed, It has been well known that the luminous efficiency of PDPs can be improved by increasing the Xe content in the panel. For instance, the efficiency is improved by a factor 1.7 when the Xe content is increased from 3.5% to 30%. The sustain pulse voltage, however, increases from 180 to 230 V by a factor 1.3. It was found that the increase in the sustain pulse voltage can be suppressed by increasing the sustain pulse frequency. The high-frequency operation further increases the luminous efficiency. If the Xe content is increased from 3.5% to 30% and the drive pulse frequency is increased from 147 to 31 3 kHz, the luminous efficiency becomes 2.7 times higher and the luminance 4.5 times higher. Furthermore, the increase in the sustain pulse voltage is suppressed 1.1 times, from 180 to 200 V. A mechanism of attaining high efficiency and low-voltage performance can be considered as follows. A train of pulses is applied during a sustain period. As the sustain pulse frequency is increased, the pulse repetition rate becomes faster and a percentage of the space charge created by the previous pulse remains until the following pulse is applied. Due to the priming effect of these space charge, the discharge current build-up becomes faster, the width of the discharge current becomes narrower, ion-heating loss is reduced, and the effective electron temperature is optimized so that Xe atoms are excited more efficiently. The intensity of Xe 147-nm radiation, dominant in low-pressure Xe discharges, saturates with respect to electron density due to plasma saturation. This determines the high end of the sustain pulse frequency.

照明学会誌, The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan (IEIJ), 88, 8A, 517-521, 2004, Peer-reviwed, The luminance and luminous flux of external-electrode, mercury-free, Xe flat discharge fluorescent lamp for LCD backlights and lighting equipment are equivalent to those of conventional Hg fluorescent lamps. However its efficacy is lower. In this paper, improvement of efficacy was attempted. First, the electrode width was reduced from 1.0mm to 0.5mm in order to widen the operating pressure margins. This enabled the Xe partial pressure to be increased from 1.2 kPa to 3.0 kPa, which increased efficacy 60%. Then a MgO, which has a high secondary electron emission coefficient, was coated on the dielectric layer, improving efficacy a further 10%. As a results, an efficacy of 35 lm/W with a luminance 10,100 cd/m2 were obtained with a 2.8-inch diagonal lamp.

Journal of the Society for Information Display, 11, 2, 395-403, 2003, Peer-reviwed, An evaluation technique of overall raster moiré patterns on color CRTs is developed. The technique can simulate any of the moiré modes. Generation mechanisms of various moiré patterns are clarified using the technique. It is found that the moiré patterns, no matter how complicated, consist of four basic types: barrel, pincushion, elliptical, and hyperbolic types. The patterns are found to be sensitive to the scan line distribution. When the scan lines are curved, the pattern appearing on the upper screen is different from that on the lower screen. When the scan lines are tilted, the patterns have horizontal shifts. By observing the moiré patterns, the scan line distribution can be estimated precisely.

    T. Shiga; S. Mikoshiba; K. Kariya
Journal of the Society for Information Display, 10, 3, 283-288, 2002, Peer-reviwed, A virtual pixel technique increases the resolution of spatially discrete pixilated display devices when the eye moves relative to the screen. By using this technique, an effective PDP resolution can be doubled for moving images. For instance, 1280-horizontal-pixel data can be displayed on a VGA PDP having only 640 horizontal pixels. The positions and sizes of the virtual pixels are controlled by choosing light-emission timings and durations of the actual pixels as their images move across the retina.

    T. Shiga
Journal of the Society for Information Display, 10, 4, 343-346, 2002, Peer-reviwed, High luminance and efficacy vs. temperature independence and environmental protection: these are the determining factors for the choice of Hg or Xe for LCD backlights. A capacity-coupled cylindrical Hg discharge lamp attains a luminance of 114,000 cd/m2 and an efficacy of 35 lm/W when driven at 5 MHz. On the other hand, a mercury-free Xe flat discharge backlight produces 11,000 cd/m2 and 30 lm/W, with fast luminance response. This paper discusses the underlying limitations assessed to the Hg and Xe backlights, considering applications to LC TVs.

Journal of the Society for Information Display, 10, 1, 5-10, 2002, Peer-reviwed, A hybrid AWD/AND drive technique has been developed in which an Address-While-Display (AWD) scheme is combined with an AND logic characteristic that gas discharges demonstrate. The AWD technique enables AC-PDPs to be driven at high luminance, while the AND logic reduces the number of scan drivers by an order of magnitude. A detailed analysis of the addressing operation has been made. The hybrid drive utilizes the AND logic in two ways: (1) a combination of two voltage pulses and (2) a combination of a voltage pulse and discharge-priming particles. It was found that the addressing operation requires the establishment of a discharge between the scan and data electrodes, and also between the scan and display electrodes.

  • A study on a priming effect in AC-PDPs and its application to low voltage and high speed addressing
    M Ishii; T Shiga; K Igarashi; S Mikoshiba
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E84C, 11, 1673-1678, Nov. 2001, Peer-reviwed, A priming effect is studied for a three-electrode, surface-discharge AC-PDP, which has stripe barrier ribs of 0.22 mm pitch. It was found that by keeping the interval between the reset and address pulses within 24 mus, the data pulse voltage can be reduced while the data pulse width can be narrowed due to the priming effect. By adopting the primed addressing technique to the PDP, the data pulse voltage was reduced to 20 V when the data and scan pulse widths were Ips. Alternatively, the data pulse width could be narrowed to 0.33 mus when the data pulse voltage was 56 V. 69% of the TV field time could be assigned for the display periods with 12 sub-fields, assuring high luminance display.

  • Mercury-free Xe flat discharge lamps for lighting
Tomokazu Shiga; Yutaka Ikeda; Shigeo Mikoshiba; Shinichi Shinada
Journal of Light and Visual Environment, 25, 2, XI-XII, 2001, Peer-reviwed, Mercuiy-free Xe flat discharge lamps were developed for the use of lighting equipment. The lamps have a simple structure with insulated electrodes and operated with an ac pulse voltage. By adopting 1 mm-wide electrodes, gas pressures of 10kPa or higher, and 50% duty pulse voltage drive, high luminance and high efficacy were achieved. Two types of mercury free Xe flat fluorescent lamps, a single discharge type and a multiple discharge type, were introduced. Luminance of 11,000cd/m 2, luminous flux of 860 lm, and efficacy of 30 1m/W were attained with the 444mm×27mm single discharge type lamp. Luminous flux is sufficient for lighting, although the efficacy is half that of the commercially available Hg fluorescent lamp. A protc-type of a table lamp that utilized a 175mm×110mm multiple discharge type was also made. Luminous flux and efficacy were 850 1m and 21 lm/W, respectively. Illuminance at the position 38cm under the lamp was 1,700 Ix, which is higher than that of a commercially available table lamp. Copyright © 2007 The Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan.

映像情報メディア学会誌, The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers, 55, 8/9, 1198-1206, 2001, Peer-reviwed, To reduce raster moire fringes appearing on color CRTs, a technique to simulate moire patterns is needed. Although it is necessary to know the moire pattern appearing on the entire screen of a CRT, the Fourier analysis technique can be used only for a small area where the parameters can be assumed to be uniform. Because there are many different moire modes, we need different methods to simulate the moire patterns. Therefore before doing a simulation, we must identify the mode. In this respect it is difficult to simulate patterns consisting of combined modes. Also, slot-type shadow masks and dot-type shadow masks must be evaluated and analysis should be performed for any electron beam profile. In this paper, a Gaussian-weighting method is described for moire evaluation. In the method, the luminance of phosphor dots around a particular central dot is weighted depending on the distance from the central dot, which simulates the characteristics of a human eye. By using the method, moire patterns of various modes, including combined modes, can be simulated for the entire screen area.

Journal of the Society for Information Display, 8, 3, 217-221, 2000, Peer-reviwed, It is shown that space charges dominate the build-up of an address discharge when it is preceded by a priming discharge in less than 32 μsec. When the separation of these discharges (cease period) exceeds 32 μsec, the space charges diffuse away and the metastable particles start playing the role of priming. The priming effect of the metastable particles is not too strong, which is desirable for adopting a data-pulse-voltage reduction technique for PDPs. By choosing the length of the cease period to be between 32 and 80 μsec in the Address-While-Display drive scheme, the data pulse voltage was reduced to 20 V. This leads to a considerable cost reduction of data driver ICs.

  • Shaping of an electron beam in high-resolution CRTs for reduction of moire fringes

ASID'99: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 5TH ASIAN SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION DISPLAY, SOCIETY INFORMATION DISPLAY TAIPEI CHAPTER, 193-196, 1999, In order to reduce the raster moire fringes appearing in high-resolution CRTs, an evaluation technique is developed which simulates visual appearances of the moire patterns by using a Gaussian weighting method. It has been found that the moire patterns are strongly influenced by a shape of an electron beam profile, By using the evaluation technique, optimum electron beam profiles for various moire modes are pursued. Although the common belief is that the Gaussian current density distribution is the best for the beam profile which gives least moire fringes, it is found that an introduction of a small deviation to the Gaussian distribution reduces the moire contrast to an appreciable extent. This enables us to design CRT electron guns which have an improved moire characteristic.

ASID'99: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 5TH ASIAN SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION DISPLAY, SOCIETY INFORMATION DISPLAY TAIPEI CHAPTER, 299-303, 1999, Determination of magnitudes of motion-dependent equalizing pulses for reducing the gray scale disturbances on PDPs has been examined. First, amounts of light intensity perceived by the retina are calculated. Then the pixels to which to add the equalizing pulses are determined by checking whether the disturbance is dark or bright. Also appropriate sub-fields of each pixels are chosen for emission compensation. Finally, a feed-back loop is provided for a fine adjustment of luminance. The technique is applicable to any sub-field configuration.

  • Improving the luminance and luminous efficacy of miniature fluorescent lamps for liquid crystal display backlighting by using a double frequency drive
T Shiga; S Mikoshiba; FL Curzon; S Shinada
REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 69, 9, 3426-3432, Sep. 1998, A new method of driving miniature fluorescent tubes for liquid crystal display backlighting, with diameters as small as 2 mm, has been devised with the objective of improving the luminance and luminous efficacies of such lamps. The driver voltage wave form consists of high frequency oscillations at the leading and trailing edges of conventional square-wave form voltage pulses of relatively low frequency. The wave form is produced simply by inserting coils between low frequency square-wave pulse generators and the lamp electrodes. A lamp driven in this way operates in a different discharge mode from the conventional glow discharge obtained in the absence of the coils. The twofold intensity increase of visible emission from the positive column region indicates that the vacuum ultraviolet emission increases: enhancing the excitation of the phosphor in the lamp, There is evidence that the luminous efficacy is also increased by a factor of 2 as a result of more efficient use of the input energy. The minimum voltage needed to maintain a discharge is reduced. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S0034-6748(98)04409-8]
