  • Signal processing of ground penetrating radar using super resolution technique
SM Shrestha; Arai, I; T Miwa; Y Tomizawa
PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2001 IEEE RADAR CONFERENCE, IEEE, 300-305, 2001, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) using electromagnetic pulse required high resolution due to its narrow bandwidth nature. The rising requirement for high resolution lead to specific demands far improved prediction methods, ah requiring many aspects to be examined. In this paper the application possibility. of super resolution method MUSIC (Multiple Signal Classification) algorithm and FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) ape examined Combined Processing Method (CPM) of time domain response of MUSIC and IFFT (Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) is proposed for signal processing of GPR for the first time. Simulation and experimental results show that CPM has both high resolution and high receiving signal level than at her conventional signal processing methods.

  • Survivor search radar system for persons trapped under earthquake rubble
    Arai, I
APMC 2001: ASIA-PACIFIC MICROWAVE CONFERENCE, VOLS 1-3, PROCEEDINGS, IEEE, 663-668, 2001, A survivor search radar system that employs 1.2 GHz band microwaves to search for survivors that have been trapped beneath collapsed building or nibble after an earthquake has been developed. Because microwaves can pass through the walls, nibble and other such obstacles, they can be used to detect the breathing and other slight movements of persons who have survived the disaster, even if they are buried under rubble The performance of this survivor search radar was confirmed by experiments using models of collapsed buildings. We further developed radar survivor search system that employs pulse Doppler radar, which can measure the breathing of survivors and the distance to them. Experiments with a prototype of that system demonstrated its ability to detect the presence of survivors and determine their location.

  • Archaeological survey using pulse compression subsurface radar

Archaeological Prospection, 7, 4, 241-247, 2000, A pulse compression subsurface radar using a chirp signal has been developed and evaluated by experimental survey at an archaeological site. This subsurface radar shows the superior ability to detect buried objects by weaker transmitting power than that of a conventional subsurface radar. Although several types of subsurface radars are now used to probe buried objects, it is sometimes difficult to use them for archaeological surveys. This is because echoes from targets such as tombs, ruins, and old mounds are sometimes very weak owing to their smallness and electromagnetic properties, which are very similar to the surrounding soils. In contrast, a pulse compression radar using a chirp signal has the ability to detect a very weak signal masked by noise, with very high resolution. We have applied this technique to a subsurface radar for archaeological survey and assembled an experimental system of a chirp subsurface radar using a delay correlator for pulse compression. This system has been successfully tested at an archaeological site called ‘The remains of Tajiri’ (Komochi, Gunma prefecture, Japan): a mounded tomb buried in the pumice layer has been clearly detected by this system. • On applicability of the integral equation formulation of the measured equation of invariance to 2D scattering objects
    M Hirose; M Miyake; J Takada; Arai, I
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E82B, 4, 645-654, Apr. 1999, This paper shows the applicability of the integral equation formulation of the measured equation of invariance (IE-MEI) to two-dimensional dielectric scatterers. That is, a relationship between the scattered electric and magnetic fields, which is derived from the new formulation of the IE-MEI: is applicable to lossless dielectric materials as well as perfect electric conductors (PEC). In addition, we show that the IE-MEI does not suffer from internal resonance problems. These two facts are validated by numerical examples for a circular cylinder and a square cylinder illuminated by Transverse Magnetic (TM) plane wave or a TM line source very close to the scatterers. The numerical results calculated by the IE-MEI agree well with the ones by moment methods that employ combined field formulations with exact boundary conditions.

  • New integral equation formulation of the measured equation of invariance and the extension to analyze two-dimensional cylinders with impedance boundary conditions
M Hirose; M Miyake; JI Takada
RADIO SCIENCE, AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 34, 1, 65-82, Jan. 1999, We have derived a new form of the integral equation formulation of the measured equation of invariance (IE-MEI). The new formulation clarifies the existence of a relationship between scattered electric and magnetic fields at consecutive nodes in the IE-MEI and indicates that the relationship in a problem for a perfect electric conductor (PEC) holds for a problem with arbitrary materials. In a scattering problem of a two-dimensional cylinder with an impedance boundary condition (IBC), every matrix in the IE-MEI is a band-like sparse matrix. That is, the solution process in the IE-MEI with an IBC is the same as that for a PEG. Therefore the IE-MEI with an IBC has the same merits of the IE-MEI for a PEG: The more efficient computation can be achieved with the smaller memory than those of the method of moments (MOM). The IE-MEI with an IBC is validated by numerical examples for a circular cylinder and a square cylinder by comparison with a combined field MOM that satisfies exact boundary conditions. Numerical examples show that the IE-MEI with an IBC is applicable to the case where the generalized skin depth is less than half the width of a scatterer.

  • Resolution Enhancement of Microwave Active Sensors by Inversion Method
    Wu Xue-feng; ARAI I.; SUZUKI T.
Journal of the Remote Sensing Society of Japan, The Remote Sensing Society of Japan, 14, 1, 66-76, 1994, A method of resolution enhancement for microwave active sensor such as marine radar is proposed in this paper. The resolution of an active sensor is determined by it's signal bandwidth and antenna beam width. Therefore, resolution enhancament generally requires to change the hardware of transmitter and receiver of the sensor or enlarge the antenna size. But this is usually limited in practical applications.
This paper introduces a resolution enhancement method based on inversion method which can enhance the resolution of active sensors by signal processing without changing their hardware or enlarging their antennas.
Deconvolution methods in frequency domain and spatial domain are described first. The effectiveness of these methods are shown by simulation. Then, some examples of resolution enhancement are applied to both marine radar and ground based pulse radar. The results of practical experiments show that these methods are effective and useful for upgrading radars by simply processing the received signals. The comparison between the two kinds of method in different domains shows that the processing in frequency domain is better than that in spatial domain when real time processing is required. A method about how to determine the optimum value of parameter α in revised Wiener filter is also proposed in this paper.

  • Error Correction Method for the MOS-1 MSR Data
    Arai I.; Morita K.; Motomura K.; Suzuki T.
Journal of The Remote Sensing Society of Japan, The Remote Sensing Society of Japan, 11, 2, 2-269, 1991, The accuracy of the sea surface temperature measured by the MOS-1 MSR has been degraded by both the rotated polarization due to antenna scanning and antenna sidelobes. This paper describes data correction methods for them. First, a simple function has been introduced to correct the polarization error due to antenna scanning. Second, an inverse filtering has been used to suppress the error due to antenna sidelobes in both simulation and real data obtained by the MOS-1 MSR.
The MOS-1 MSR is a microwave sensor that rotates the main dish antenna with mechanically conical scanning. At the same time the observing polarization is also rotated by the mechanical scanning. Because sea surface brightness temperature depends on polarization, the rotation of the polarization causes measurement errors. The amount of the errors are estimated about 3 K at 23 GHz and 4 K at 31 GHz, respectively.
The sea surface brightness temperature varies as nearly cosine or sine curves according to the rotated polarization. Then we made simple equations for error correction. Using the equations, the error correction for both 23 GHz and 31 GHz has been done and the errors after correction became within ±0.1 K.
In order to evaluate the influence of antenna sidelobes on observed brightness temperature, we have calculated the brightness temperature on a simulation image. The results are as follows.
If the main beam of the antenna is directed to sea and the antenna sidelobes look at ground, the sea surface brightness temperature are observed higher than true data because of the influence of the higher temperature of the ground. On the other hand if the main beam and the sidelobes are directed to land and sea area respectively, the land brightness temperature is observed lower than true data. The amount of the errors due to the antenna sidelobes are about 10 K higher at sea and 20 K lower at land.
An inverse filtering method for the error correction has been applied to both simulation images and real data of the MOS-1 MSR. By this method we can correct more than 5 K and 10 K of the brightness temperature at sea surface and land, respectively.
Finally, we discussed the effect of pixel fractionization for smoothing.
