  • Observation of a coherence loss of an atomic wave scattered from the optical potential in a Talbot-Lau atom interferometer
Takuya Kohno; Shinya Suzuki; Kazuko Shimizu
A coherence loss of an atomic wave scattered from the optical potential in an interferometer is observed. A Talbot-Lau atom interferometer is developed for that measurement using a laser-cooled lithium atomic beam. The long de Broglie wavelength of slow lithium atoms gives a short Talbot length and makes it possible to construct a small and stable atom interferometer., AMER PHYSICAL SOC, Nov. 2007, PHYSICAL REVIEW A, 76, 5, 053624-1-053624-5, English, 1050-2947, WOS:000251326400134

  • Quantum reflection of He-* on silicon
    H Oberst; Y Tashiro; K Shimizu; F Shimizu
A cold beam of He-* (2 S-3(1)) atoms is used at grazing incidence to study the quantum reflection on a flat polished silicon surface. We measure the reflectivity as a function of the normal incident velocity component between 3 and 30 cm/s. Our result is in reasonable agreement with a calculation of the attractive van der Waals surface potential using the dielectric function of Si and the dipole polarizability of He-*. We discuss the influence of the conductivity and of a thin oxide layer on the potential. By comparing our data to those previously measured with Ne-* atoms, we are also able to confirm the scaling of the reflectivity with atomic mass., AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, May 2005, PHYSICAL REVIEW A, 71, 5, 052901-1-052901-8, English, 1050-2947, WOS:000229543600074

Takuya Kohno; Shinya Suzuki; Kazuko Shimizu
A Talbot-Lau type atom interferometer using cold lithium atoms in a magneto-optical trap is built and the visibility of interference fringes is measured as a function of the de Broglie wavelength. The wavelength dependence of the visibility is clearly shown. • Fresnel diffraction mirror for an atomic wave
    H Oberst; D Kouznetsov; K Shimizu; J Fujita; F Shimizu
We have experimentally demonstrated a material-independent mirror for atomic waves that uses the Fresnel diffraction at an array of parallel ridges. He* (2 S-3(1)) and Ne* (1s(3)) atomic waves were reflected coherently on a silicon plate with a microfabricated grating structure, consisting of narrow wall-like ridges. We measured the reflectivity at grazing incidence as a function of the incident velocity and angle. Our data show that the reflectivity on this type of mirror depends only on the distance between the ridges, the wavelength, and the incident angle, but is insensitive to the material of the grating structure. The reflectivity is observed to increase by 2 orders of magnitude, compared to that of a flat polished silicon surface, where the reflection is caused by the attractive surface potential. For He* atoms, the measured reflectivity exceeds 10% for normal incident velocities below about 25 cm/s., AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, Jan. 2005, PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, 94, 1, 013203, English, 0031-9007, WOS:000226308000030

We report the first observation of subrecoil laser cooling in two dimensions by velocity selective coherent population trapping. We have compressed the momentum distribution of a cloud of trapped metastable helium atoms along two orthogonal axes to δp=k4, where k is the photon momentum. The corresponding temperature, 16 times below the single-photon recoil temperature, is 250 nK. Atoms are pumped into a nonabsorbing state exhibiting four well-resolved momentum peaks with subrecoil widths. The momentum space density in the peaks is significantly greater than that in the uncooled distribution. © 1994 The American Physical Society., 1994, Physical Review Letters, 73, 14, 1915-1918, English, 0031-9007, 80007868727, 10056921, 0028763230
