  • Range-point migration-based image expansion method exploiting fully polarimetric data for UWB short-range radar

    IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 56, 4, 2170-2182, 01 Apr. 2018, Peer-reviwed, Ultrawideband radar with high-range resolution is a promising technology for use in short-range 3-D imaging applications, in which optical cameras are not applicable. One of the most efficient 3-D imaging methods is the range-point migration (RPM) method, which has a definite advantage for the synthetic aperture radar approach in terms of computational burden, high accuracy, and high spatial resolution. However, if an insufficient aperture size or angle is provided, these kinds of methods cannot reconstruct the whole target structure due to the absence of reflection signals from large part of target surface. To expand the 3-D image obtained by RPM, this paper proposes an image expansion method by incorporating the RPM feature and fully polarimetric data-based machine learning approach. Following ellipsoid-based scattering analysis and learning with a neural network, this method expresses the target image as an aggregation of parts of ellipsoids, which significantly expands the original image by the RPM method without sacrificing the reconstruction accuracy. The results of numerical simulation based on 3-D finite-difference time-domain analysis verify the effectiveness of our proposed method, in terms of image-expansion criteria.

This study explored the application of a combined visible and thermal image processing approach that uses a CMOS camera equipped with IRT to remotely sense multiple vital signs and screen patients with suspected infectious diseases.
    Methods: An IRT system that produced visible and thermal images was used for image acquisition. The subjects' respiration rates were measured by monitoring temperature changes around the nasal areas on thermal images; facial skin temperatures were measured simultaneously. Facial blood circulation causes tiny color changes in visible facial images that enable the determination of the heart rate. A logistic regression discriminant function predicted the likelihood of infection within 10 s, based on the measured vital signs. Sixteen patients with an influenza-like illness and 22 control subjects participated in a clinical test at a clinic in Fukushima, Japan.
    Results: The vital-sign-based IRT screening system had a sensitivity of 87.5% and a negative predictive value of 91.7%; these values are higher than those of conventional fever-based screening approaches.
    Conclusions: Multiple vital-sign-based screening efficiently detected patients with suspected infectious diseases. It offers a promising alternative to conventional fever-based screening.   • Three-Dimensional Imaging Method Incorporating Range Points Migration and Doppler Velocity Estimation for UWB Millimeter-Wave Radar

Ultrawideband (UWB) millimeter-wave radars are one of the most promising devices for the above-mentioned applications. For target recognition using sensors, it is necessary to convert observational data into full 3-D images with both time efficiency and high accuracy. For such conversion algorithm, we have already proposed the range points migration (RPM) method. However, in the existence of multiple separated objects, this method suffers from inaccuracy and high computational cost due to dealing with many observed RPs. To address this issue, this letter introduces Doppler-based RPs clustering into the RPM method. The results from numerical simulations, assuming 140-GHz band millimeter radars, show that the addition of Doppler velocity into the RPM method results in more accurate 3-D images with reducing computational costs.

  • An Objective Screening Method for Major Depressive Disorder Using Logistic Regression Analysis of Heart Rate Variability Data Obtained in a Mental Task Paradigm

    FRONTIERS IN PSYCHIATRY, FRONTIERS MEDIA SA, 7, -, 1-7, Nov. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Background and objectives: Heart rate variability (HRV) has been intensively studied as a promising biological marker of major depressive disorder (MDD). Our previous study confirmed that autonomic activity and reactivity in depression revealed by HRV during rest and mental task (MT) conditions can be used as diagnostic measures and in clinical evaluation. In this study, logistic regression analysis (LRA) was utilized for the classification and prediction of MDD based on HRV data obtained in an MT paradigm.
    Methods: Power spectral analysis of HRV on R-R intervals before, during, and after an MT (random number generation) was performed in 44 drug-naive patients with MDD and 47 healthy control subjects at Department of Psychiatry in Shizuoka Saiseikai General Hospital. Logit scores of LRA determined by HRV indices and heart rates discriminated patients with MDD from healthy subjects. The high frequency (HF) component of HRV and the ratio of the low frequency (LF) component to the HF component (LF/HF) correspond to parasympathetic and sympathovagal balance, respectively.
    Results: The LRA achieved a sensitivity and specificity of 80.0 and 79.0%, respectively, at an optimum cutoff logit score (0.28). Misclassifications occurred only when the logit score was close to the cutoff score. Logit scores also correlated significantly with subjective self-rating depression scale scores (p < 0.05).
    Conclusion: HRV indices recorded during a MT may be an objective tool for screening patients with MDD in psychiatric practice. The proposed method appears promising for not only objective and rapid MDD screening but also evaluation of its severity.

Thus, it has a great potential for innovative non-destructive testing of aging roads or bridges or for non-invasive medical imaging applications. In this context, we have already proposed an accurate dielectric constant estimation method for a homogeneous dielectric medium, based on a geometrical optics (GO) approximation, where the dielectric boundary points and their normal vectors are directly reproduced using the range point migration (RPM) method. In addition, to compensate for the estimation error incurred by the GO approximation, a waveform compensation scheme employing the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method was incorporated. This paper shows the experimental validation of this method, where a new approach for suppressing the creeping wave along the dielectric boundary is also introduced. The results from real observation data validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of highly accurate dielectric constant estimation and embedded object boundary reconstruction.

For such applications, we have already developed the range points migration (RPM) method, which achieves highly accurate 3-D boundary extraction. However, to deal with multiple targets with many reflection points, such as a human body, this method suffers from an inaccuracy and an expensive computational cost. As a solution for such difficulty, this paper introduces a Doppler based range points clustering into the RPM method. Results from numerical simulations assuming 140 GHz millimeter radars show that the proposed method achieves more accurate 3-D image associated with Doppler velocity, without sacrificing computational efficiency.

Internal imaging of dielectric objects by UWB radar is a promising nondestructive method of testing aging roads and bridges and a noninvasive technique for human body examination. For these applications, we have already developed an accurate internal imaging approach based on the range points migration (RPM) method, combined with a method that efficiently estimates the dielectric constant. Although this approach accurately extracts the internal boundary, it is applicable only to highly conductive targets immersed in homogeneous dielectric media. It is not suitable for multi-layered dielectric structures such as human tissues or concrete objects. To remedy this limitation, we here propose a novel dielectric constant and boundary extractionmethod for double-layered materials. This new approach, which simply extends the Envelope method to boundary extraction of the inner layer, is evaluated in finite difference time domain (FDTD)-based simulations and laboratory experiments, assuming a double-layered concrete cylinder. These tests demonstrate that our proposed method accurately and simultaneously estimates the dielectric constants of both media and the layer boundaries.

With that, it has great potential as an innovative non-destructive inspection technique for objects such as human body or concrete walls. For suitability in such applications, we have already proposed an accurate permittivity estimation method for a 2-dimensional dielectric object of arbitrarily shape and clear boundary. In this method, the propagation path estimation inside the dielectric object is calculated, based on the geometrical optics (GO) approximation, where the dielectric boundary points and its normal vectors are directly reproduced by the range point migration (RPM) method. In addition, to compensate for the estimation error incurred using the GO approximation, a waveform compensation scheme employing the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method was incorporated, where an initial guess of the relative permittivity and dielectric boundary are employed for data regeneration. This study introduces the 3-dimensional extension of the above permittivity estimation method, aimed at practical uses, where only the transmissive data are effectively extracted, based on quantitative criteria that considers the spatial relationship between antenna locations and the dielectric object position. Results from a numerical simulation verify that our proposed method accomplishes accurate permittivity estimations even for 3-dimensional dielectric medium of wavelength size.

In general, it is difficult to classify target signals that have time-varying parameters using traditional signal recognition methods. To overcome this problem, this study proposes a novel recognition method that works well even for such time-dependent communication signals. This method is mainly composed of feature extraction and classification processes. In the feature extraction stage, we adopt Shannon entropy and index entropy to obtain the stable features of modulated signals. In the classification stage, the interval gray relation theory is employed as suitable for signals with time-varying parameter spaces. The advantage of our method is that it can deal with time-varying SNR situations, which cannot be handled by existing methods. The results from numerical simulation show that the proposed feature extraction algorithm, based on entropy characteristics in time-varying SNR situations,offers accurate clustering performance, and the classifier, based on interval gray relation theory, can achieve a recognition rate of up to 82.9%, even when the SNR varies from -10 to -6 dB.

As an accurate and high-resolution imaging method for targets embedded in a dielectric medium, extended range points migration (RPM) has been developed. Although this method offers an accurate internal target image in a homogeneous media, it assumes the permittivity of the dielectric medium is given, which is not practical for general applications. Although there are various permittivity estimation methods, they have essential problems that are not suitable for clear, dielectric boundaries like walls, or is not applicable to an unknown and arbitrary shape of dielectric medium. To overcome the above drawbacks, we newly propose a permittivity estimation method suitable for various shapes of dielectric media with a clear boundary, where the dielectric boundary points and their normal vectors are accurately determined by the original RPM method. In addition, our method iteratively compensates for the scattered waveform deformation using a finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method to enhance the accuracy of the permittivity estimation. Results from a numerical simulation demonstrate that our method achieves accurate permittivity estimation even for a dielectric medium of wavelength size.

Various imaging algorithms for buried objects within a dielectric medium have been proposed, such as aperture synthesis, the time reversal approach and the space-time beamforming algorithm. However, these algorithms mostly require a priori knowledge of the dielectric medium boundary in image focusing, and often suffer from inadequate accuracy to identify the detailed structure of buried targets, such as an edge or specular surface owing to employing the waveform focusing scheme. To overcome these difficulties, this paper proposes an accurate and non-parametric (i.e. using an arbitrary shape without target modeling) imaging algorithm for targets buried in a homogeneous dielectric medium by advancing the RPM (Range Points Migration) algorithm to internal imaging issues, which has been demonstrated to provide an accurate image even for complex-shaped objects in free-space measurement. Numerical simulations, including those for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) cases, verify that the proposed algorithm enhances the imaging accuracy by less than 1/10 of the wavelength and significantly reduces the computational cost by specifying boundary extraction compared with the conventional SAR-based algorithm.

It is particularly suitable for robotic or security sensors that must identify a target in low visibility. Some recently developed radar imaging algorithms proactively employ multiple scattered components, which can enhance an imaging range compared to synthesizing a single scattered component. We have already proposed the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) method considering a double scattered, which successfully expanded a reconstructible range of radar imagery with no a priori knowledge of target or surroundings. However, it requires a multiple integration of the received signals, requiring the fifth times integration in the 3-D case. Thus, this method requires an intensive computation and its spatial resolution is insufficient for clear boundary extraction such as edges or specular surfaces. As a substantial solution, this paper proposes a novel shadow region imaging algorithm based on a range derivative of double scattered signals. This new method accomplishes high-speed imaging, including a shadow region without any integration process, and enhances the accuracy with respect to clear boundary extraction. Results from numerical simulations verify that the proposed method remarkably decreases the computation amount compared to that for the conventional method, especially for the 3-D problem, enhancing the visible range of radar imagery.

We have already proposed the accurate and fast imaging algorithm as range point migration (RPM), which employs the direction of arrival (DOA) with the global characteristic of the multiple observed ranges. However, this algorithm assumes the line scanning of an omnidirectional antenna and limits the imaging range. To overcome this limitation, this letter derives an extended RPM method, which accomplishes omnidirectional imaging and accurate target positioning. As a false-image-reduction scheme in this method, this letter introduces a postprocessing algorithm, which constrains the searching range for DOA estimation by using the initial RPM image. The results of numerical simulations, including noisy situations, show that the proposed method accomplishes accurate and omnidirectional imaging on the order of 1/100 wavelength and enhances the imaging range while avoiding false images.

We have already proposed the extended Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) algorithm employing double scattered waves, which aimed at enhancing the reconstructible region of the target boundary including shadow region. However, it still suffers from the shadow area for the target that has a sharp inclination or deep concave boundary, because it assumes a mono-static model, whose real aperture size is, in general, small. To resolve this issue, this study proposes an extension algorithm of the double scattered SAR based on a multi-static configuration. While this extension is quite simple, the effectiveness of the proposed method is nontrivial with regard to the expansion of the imaging range. The results from numerical simulations verify that our method significantly enhances the visible range of the target surfaces without a priori knowledge of the target shapes or any preliminary observation of its surroundings.

In ISAR imaging, 3-dimensional reflectivity distribution of a target is projected to the plane defined by range axis and cross range axis. In order to recognize the observed target by using pattern matching, reference images of candidate targets must be adequately generated. However, that is difficult because the cross range axis, which depends on the target's unknown rotational motion, can not be determined precisely. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to generate reference ISAR images of ship targets. In this algorithm, tracking data, Doppler width and the slope of the centerline of an ISAR target image are used to specify the cross range axis. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm was evaluated by using simulated targets.

In this paper, we show that the MSLC does not always guarantee such capability in three dimensional applications where the incident direction of interference signals is defined by two angles (elevation and azimuth). We show the singularity of the autocorrelation matrix for the auxiliary channel signals induces the degradation of the capability by analyzing characteristics of MSLC's in three dimensional applications from the view point of the eigenvalue problem. To overcome this singularity, we propose a novel MSLC controlling the placement of auxiliary antennas by means of switching over three antennas arranged triangularly. Some simulations are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed MSLC.

  • 超広帯域レーダのための偏波及び多重散乱波を用いた画像再現域拡大に関する研究

    Principal investigator, 本研究では,災害現場・資源探査等を想定した自律型ロボットの周囲環境把握(目標位置計測・形 状認識等)のための,超広帯域(UWB: Ultra Wideband)電磁波を用いた超分解能画像レーダ技術を開 発する.申請者らは現在まで,超分解能・影領域画像化性能を有する立体イメージングレーダ技術(RPM 法等)を独自に発展させてきた.しかし,室内計測等開口面積が制限される状況では,十分な画像再 現域を確保できず,目標形状認識が困難となる.本研究では,「局所楕円体近似と偏波解析による画像 領域拡大法」と「多重散乱環境を用いた見通し外センシング」を導入し,「散乱周波数特性」・「誘電体 透過性」等の電波固有の性質を積極的に活用した革新的レーダ技術を開発する.更に移動型レーダプ ラットフォームを導入し,災害レスキュー等に近い実験環境による原理検証・性能評価を実施する.
