Last, The Journal of Chemical Physics, AIP Publishing, 160, 10, 08 Mar. 2024, Peer-reviwed, Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying the dynamic processes of molecular systems in condensed phases. However, in molecular systems containing many dye molecules, the spectra can become crowded and difficult to interpret owing to the presence of multiple nonlinear optical contributions. In this work, we theoretically propose time-resolved spectroscopy based on the coincidence counting of two entangled photons generated via parametric down-conversion with a monochromatic laser. We demonstrate that the use of two-photon counting detection of entangled photon pairs enables the selective elimination of the excited-state absorption signal. This selective elimination cannot be realized with classical coherent light. We anticipate that the proposed spectroscopy will help simplify the spectral interpretation of complex molecular and material systems comprising multiple molecules.

We demonstrated an ultrafast time-resolved measurement method operating at the single-photon level and employing a two-color comb-based asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) setup. We harnessed the two-color ASOPS photon counting approach to achieve long-term averaging of the ultralow intensity signal with a synchronized optical trigger signal, which minimizes residual timing jitter between the two combs. A pulse-width limited picosecond cross-correlation signal was successfully obtained with a power level of <1 photon/pulse. This approach enables the thorough study of ultrafast time-resolved detection of entangled photon pairs, quantum mechanical correlations in the time-frequency domain and finds wide use in optical quantum technology.

  • Comparison of multi-mode Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and multi-slit interference

Optics Express, Optica Publishing Group, 31, 20, 32849-32849, 18 Sep. 2023, Peer-reviwed, Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference of multi-mode frequency entangled states plays a crucial role in quantum metrology. However, as the number of modes increases, the HOM interference pattern becomes increasingly complex, making it challenging to comprehend intuitively. To overcome this problem, we present the theory and simulation of multi-mode-HOM interference (MM-HOMI) and compare it to multi-slit interference (MSI). We find that these two interferences have a strong mapping relationship and are determined by two factors: the envelope factor and the details factor. The envelope factor is contributed by the single-mode HOM interference (single-slit diffraction) for MM-HOMI (MSI). The details factor is given by sin (Nx)/sin (x) ([sin (Nv)/sin (v)]2) for MM-HOMI (MSI), where N is the mode (slit) number and x (v) is the phase spacing of two adjacent spectral modes (slits). As a potential application, we demonstrate that the square root of the maximal Fisher information in MM-HOMI increases linearly with the number of modes, indicating that MM-HOMI is a powerful tool for enhancing precision in time estimation. We also discuss multi-mode Mach-Zehnder interference, multi-mode NOON-state interference, and the extended Wiener-Khinchin theorem. This work may provide an intuitive understanding of MM-HOMI patterns and promote the application of MM-HOMI in quantum metrology.

Photonics, MDPI AG, 10, 4, 462-462, 17 Apr. 2023, Peer-reviwed, Free-space optical (FSO) communications can offer high-capacity transmission owing to the properties of the laser beams. However, performance degradation caused by atmospheric turbulence is an urgent issue. Recently, the application of polar codes, which can provide capacity-achieving error-correcting performance with low computational cost for decoding, to FSO communications has been studied. However, long-distance and real-field experiments have not been conducted in these studies. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to present the experimental results of polar-coded transmission over 7.8-km FSO links. Using experimental data, we investigated the performance of polar codes over atmospheric channels, including their superiority to regular low-density parity-check codes. We expect that our results will offer a path toward the application of polar codes in high-speed optical communication networks including satellites.

Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, IOP Publishing Ltd, 63, 2, 022003/1-4, 16 Feb. 2023, Peer-reviwed, False, We demonstrate a hybrid approach to detecting a short fringe period of two-photon interference with high brightness, by combining spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) and up-conversion techniques. Photon pairs were generated at the wavelength of 1550 nm via SPDC, and converted to 516.7 nm through up-conversion process with the pump light 775 nm in efficiency similar to 90%. The two-photon interference of the up-converted photon pairs exhibited a fringe period of 258.3 nm with high event rate (similar to 2000 counts s(-1)), which was 6 times shorter than the original wavelength, demonstrating that the energy-time correlation of the photon pairs was preserved. The technique simultaneously provides short fringe period beyond the classical limit and high brightness of the photon pairs.

Optics Express, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 30, 4, 4999-5007, 02 Feb. 2022, Peer-reviwed, Ultrafast quantum optics with time-frequency entangled photons is at the forefront of progress towards future quantum technologies. However, to unravel the time domain structure of entangled photons and exploit fully their rich dimensionality, a single-photon detector with sub-picosecond temporal resolution is required. Here, we present ultrafast single-photon detection using an optical Kerr gate composed of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) placed inside a Sagnac interferometer. A near-rectangle temporal waveform of a heralded single-photon generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion is measured with temporal resolution as high as 224 +/- 9 fs. The large nonlinearity and long effective interaction length of the PCF enables maximum detection efficiency to be achieved with only 30.5 mW gating pulse average power, demonstrating an order-of-magnitude improvement compared to optical gating with sum-frequency generation. Also, we discuss the trade-off relationship between detection efficiency and temporal resolution. Published by Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License.

Phys. Rev. Research, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 2, 2, 023256/1-7, 01 Jun. 2020, Peer-reviwed, Light incident upon molecules triggers fundamental processes in diverse systems present in nature. However, under natural conditions such as sunlight illumination, it is impossible to assign known times for photon arrival due to continuous pumping, and therefore the photo-induced processes cannot be easily investigated. In this work, we demonstrate theoretically that the characteristics of sunlight photons, such as photon number statistics and spectral distribution, can be emulated through a quantum entangled photon pair generated with parametric down-conversion (PDC). We show that the average photon number of sunlight in a specific frequency spectrum, e.g., the visible light, can be reconstructed by adjusting the PDC crystal length and pump frequency, and thereby the molecular dynamics induced by the pseudo-sunlight can be investigated. The entanglement time, which is the hallmark of quantum entangled photons, can serve as a control knob to resolve the photon arrival times, enabling investigations on real-time dynamics triggered by pseudo-sunlight photons.

  • Extended Wiener–Khinchin theorem for quantum spectral analysis
    Rui-Bo Jin; Ryosuke Shimizu
Optica, OSA - The Optical Society, 5, 2, 93-98, 20 Feb. 2018, Peer-reviwed, The classical Wiener–Khinchin theorem (WKT), which can extract spectral information by classical interferometers through Fourier transform, is a fundamental theorem used in many disciplines. However, there is still a need for a quantum version of WKT, which could connect correlated biphoton spectral information by quantum interferometers. Here, we extend the classical WKT to its quantum counterpart [i.e., extended WKT (e-WKT)], which is based on two-photon quantum interferometry. According to the e-WKT, the difference–frequency distribution of the biphoton wavefunctions can be extracted by applying a Fourier transform on the time-domain Hong–Ou–Mandel interference (HOMI) patterns, while the sum-frequency distribution can be extracted by applying a Fourier transform on the time-domain NOON state interference (NOONI) patterns. We also experimentally verified the WKT and e-WKT in a Mach–Zehnder interference (MZI), a HOMI, and a NOONI. This theorem can be directly applied to quantum spectroscopy, where the spectral correlation information of biphotons can be obtained from time-domain quantum interferences by Fourier transform. This may open a new path for the study of light–matter interaction at the single photon level.

  • Coupling efficiency of laser beam to multimode fiber for free space optical communication

Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 10563, 14 Nov. 2017, © 2018 SPIE. Recently, the free space optical (FSO) communications have been widely studied as an alternative for large capacity communications and its possible implementation in satellite and terrestrial laser links. In satellite communications, clouds can strongly attenuate the laser signal that would lead to high bit-error rates or temporal unavailability of the link. To overcome the cloud coverage effects, often site diversity technique is implemented. When using multiple ground stations though, simplified optical system is required to allow the usage of more flexible approaches. In terrestrial laser communications, several methods for optical system simplification by using a multimode fiber (MMF) have been proposed.

  • Monotonic quantum-to-classical transition enabled by positively correlated biphotons
Rui-Bo Jin; Guo-Qun Chen; Hui Jing; Changliang Ren; Pei Zhao; Ryosuke Shimizu; Pei-Xiang Lu
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 95, 6, 062341/1-8, Jun. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Multiparticle interference is a fundamental phenomenon in the study of quantum mechanics. It was discovered in a recent experiment [Y.-S. Ra et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 110, 1227 (2013)] that spectrally uncorrelated biphotons exhibited a nonmonotonic quantum-to-classical transition in a four-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference. In this work, we consider the same scheme with spectrally correlated photons. By theoretical calculation and numerical simulation, we found the transition not only can be nonmonotonic with negatively correlated or uncorrelated biphotons, but also can be monotonic with positively correlated biphotons. The fundamental reason for this difference is that the HOM-type multiphoton interference is a differential-frequency interference. Our study may shed new light on understanding the role of frequency entanglement in multiphoton behavior.

SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 6, 36914/1-7, Nov. 2016, Peer-reviwed, The NOON state, and its experimental approximation the Holland-Burnett state, have important applications in phase sensing measurement with enhanced sensitivity. However, most of the previous Holland-Burnett state interference (HBSI) experiments only investigated the area of the interference pattern in the region immediately around zero optical path length difference, while the full HBSI pattern over a wide range of optical path length differences has not yet been well explored. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate up to six-photon HBSI and study the properties of the interference patterns over a wide range of optical path length differences. It was found that the shape, the coherence time and the visibility of the interference patterns were strongly dependent on the detection schemes. This work paves the way for applications which are based on the envelope of the HBSI pattern, such as quantum spectroscopy and quantum metrology.

Quantum Science and Technology, Institute of Physics Publishing, 1, 1, 015004/1-9, 01 Aug. 2016, Peer-reviwed, High-dimensional, frequency-entangled photonic quantum bits (qudits for d-dimension) are promising resources for quantum information processing in an optical fiber network and can also be used to improve channel capacity and security for quantum communication. However, up to now, it is still challenging to prepare high-dimensional frequency-entangled qudits in experiments, due to technical limitations. Here we propose and experimentally implement a novel method for a simple generation of frequency-entangled qudtswith d >
10 without the use of any spectral filters or cavities. The generated state is distributed over 15 kmin total length. This scheme combines the technique of spectral engineering of biphotons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the technique of spectrally resolved Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Our frequency-entangled qudits will enable quantum cryptographic experiments with enhanced performances. This distribution of distinct entangled frequency modes may also be useful for improved metrology, quantum remote synchronization, as well as for fundamental test of stronger violation of local realism.

JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 32, 4, 550-554, Apr. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We report the spectral properties of broadband biphotons generated by pulsed type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion based on a periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 (PPMgSLT). Spectroscopic and interferometric measurements were used to characterize the biphoton source. For the interferometric measurements, sum-and difference-frequency two-photon interference experiments were performed to estimate the spectral correlation and to ensure the broadband nature of biphotons, respectively. When using a picosecond Ti: sapphire as a pump source, the spectral width of biphotons was over 40 nm. • Highly efficient entanglement swapping and teleportation at telecom wavelength

SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 5, 93333/1-7, Mar. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Entanglement swapping at telecom wavelengths is at the heart of quantum networking in optical fiber infrastructures. Although entanglement swapping has been demonstrated experimentally so far using various types of entangled photon sources both in near-infrared and telecom wavelength regions, the rate of swapping operation has been too low to be applied to practical quantum protocols, due to limited efficiency of entangled photon sources and photon detectors. Here we demonstrate drastic improvement of the efficiency at telecom wavelength by using two ultra-bright entangled photon sources and four highly efficient superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. We have attained a four-fold coincidence count rate of 108 counts per second, which is three orders higher than the previous experiments at telecom wavelengths. A raw (net) visibility in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between the two independent entangled sources was 73.3 +/- 1.0% (85.1 +/- 0.8%). We performed the teleportation and entanglement swapping, and obtained a fidelity of 76.3% in the swapping test. Our results on the coincidence count rates are comparable with the ones ever recorded in teleportation/swapping and multi-photon entanglement generation experiments at around 800 nm wavelengths. Our setup opens the way to practical implementation of device-independent quantum key distribution and its distance extension by the entanglement swapping as well as multi-photon entangled state generation in telecom band infrastructures with both space and fiber links.

SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 4, 7468/1-6, Dec. 2014, Peer-reviwed, Efficient generation and detection of indistinguishable twin photons are at the core of quantum information and communications technology (Q-ICT). These photons are conventionally generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), which is a probabilistic process, and hence occurs at a limited rate, which restricts wider applications of Q-ICT. To increase the rate, one had to excite SPDC by higher pump power, while it inevitably produced more unwanted multi-photon components, harmfully degrading quantum interference visibility. Here we solve this problem by using recently developed 10 GHz repetition-rate-tunable comb laser, combined with a group-velocity-matched nonlinear crystal, and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors. They operate at telecom wavelengths more efficiently with less noises than conventional schemes, those typically operate at visible and near infrared wavelengths generated by a 76 MHz Ti Sapphire laser and detected by Si detectors. We could show high interference visibilities, which are free from the pump-power induced degradation. Our laser, nonlinear crystal, and detectors constitute a powerful tool box, which will pave a way to implementing quantum photonics circuits with variety of good and low-cost telecom components, and will eventually realize scalable Q-ICT in optical infra-structures.

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 22, 10, 11498-11507, May 2014, Peer-reviwed, We demonstrate pulsed polarization-entangled photons generated from a periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystal in a Sagnac interferometer configuration at telecom wavelength. Since the group-velocity-matching (GVM) condition is satisfied, the intrinsic spectral purity of the photons is much higher than in the previous scheme at around 800 nm wavelength. The combination of a Sagnac interferometer and the GVM-PPKTP crystal makes our entangled source compact, stable, highly entangled, spectrally pure and ultra-bright. The photons were detected by two superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) with detection efficiencies of 70% and 68% at dark counts of less than 1 kcps. We achieved fidelities of 0.981 +/- 0.0002 for vertical bar psi(-)> and 0.980 +/- 0.001 for vertical bar psi(+)> respectively. This GVM-PPKTP-Sagnac scheme is directly applicable to quantum communication experiments at telecom wavelength, especially in free space. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 88, 1, 012324/1-4, Jul. 2013, Peer-reviwed, We report on the experimental generation of an entangled state with a spectrally pure heralded single-photon state and a weak coherent state. Our source, which was as efficient as that reported in our previous report [Phys. Rev. A 83, 031805 (2011)], was much brighter than those reported in earlier experiments using similar configurations. This entanglement system is useful for quantum information protocols that require indistinguishable photons from independent sources.

OPTICS EXPRESS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 21, 9, 10659-10666, May 2013, Peer-reviwed, We theoretically and experimentally investigate the spectral tunability and purity of photon pairs generated from spontaneous parametric down conversion in periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal with group-velocity matching condition. The numerical simulation predicts that the spectral purity can be kept higher than 0.81 when the wavelength is tuned from 1460 nm to 1675 nm, which covers the S-, C-, L-, and U-band in telecommunication wavelengths. We also experimentally measured the joint spectral intensity at 1565 nm, 1584 nm and 1565 nm, yielding Schmidt numbers of 1.01, 1.02 and 1.04, respectively. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 86, 1, 010302(R)/1-4, Jul. 2012, Peer-reviwed, We report on an experimental demonstration of four-photon quantum interference using telecom-wavelength photons. The realization of multiphoton quantum interference is essential to linear optics quantum information processing and measurement-based quantum computing. We have developed a source that efficiently emits photon pairs in a pure spectrotemporal mode at a telecom-wavelength region, and have demonstrated quantum interference exhibiting reduced fringe intervals that correspond to a reduced de Broglie wavelength of up to the four-photon NOON state. Our result should open a path to practical quantum information processing using telecom-wavelength photons.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 109, 4, 040501/1-4, Jul. 2012, Peer-reviwed, Entanglement is one of the essential resources in quantum information and communication technology (QICT). The entanglement thus far explored and applied to QICT has been pure and distillable entanglement. Yet, there is another type of entanglement, called "bound entanglement,'' which is not distillable by local operations and classical communication. We demonstrate the experimental "activation'' of the bound entanglement held in the four-qubit Smolin state, unleashing its immanent entanglement in distillable form, with the help of auxiliary two-qubit entanglement and local operations and classical communication. We anticipate that it opens the way to a new class of QICT applications that utilize more general classes of entanglement than ever, including bound entanglement.

2011 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe and 12th European Quantum Electronics Conference, CLEO EUROPE/EQEC 2011, 2011, Peer-reviwed, We report the experimental realization of the four-partite bound-entangled state, i.e., Smolin state [1] and demonstrate the superactivation of the bound entanglement. Bound entanglement is a class of multipartite entanglement that cannot be distilled into pure entanglement under local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Despite its undistillable property, this class of entanglement has interesting properties that are expected to be useful in quantum information processing (QIP). For instance, in the Smolin state, the bound entanglement can be activated into distillable entanglement when two of the parties get together. The process is called unlocking [1], and has been demonstrated experimentally [2]. More importantly, the bound entanglement can be activated with the help of entanglement in other systems [3]. The activation of bound entanglement, i.e., superactivation, plays an essential role in the QIP protocols using bound entangled states (e.g., remote information concentration [4]). © 2011 IEEE.

  • Measurement of reduced four-photon de Broglie wavelength at telecom wavelength

2011 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe and 12th European Quantum Electronics Conference, CLEO EUROPE/EQEC 2011, 2011, Peer-reviwed, The reduction of de Broglie wavelength is one of the fascinating characteristics of multiphoton quantum interference. It will be applicable to, for instance, super-resolution imaging beyond the classical diffraction limit and ultrasensitive phase measurement beyond the standard quantum limit. Thus far, the reduced de Broglie wavelength has been experimentally demonstrated using visible or near infrared photons [1-3]. However, it is still a challenging task to demonstrate multiphoton quantum interference in a telecom-wavelength region, because of insufficient quantum efficiencies of single-photon detectors working at telecom wavelength. Also, efficient photon sources of multiple photons that are mutually indistinguishable are essential to carry out various experiments including multiphoton quantum interference and quantum information protocols. In this context, we have developed an efficient photon-pair source designed for such multiphoton experiments at telecom wavelength. Making use of this source, we demonstrate the first measurement of reduced de Broglie wavelength of the four-photon state at the telecom wavelength. © 2011 IEEE.

  • Up-conversion dynamics for temporally entangled two-photon pulses

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 83, 1, 013824/1-6, Jan. 2011, Peer-reviwed, We analyze the up conversion of a two-photon pulse having temporal entanglement on the basis of a full quantum formalism that treats both photons and optical media quantum mechanically. We derive a formula of the up-converted photon wave function, which is applicable to arbitrary input two-photon states for a three-level system, as the simplest second-order nonlinear optical system. As the input, we employ three kinds of temporally entangled two-photon pulses: correlated, uncorrelated, and anticorrelated. We observe the up-conversion efficiency and the temporal profile of the up-converted photon. Our results reveal the crossover behavior of the up conversion from anticorrelation to correlation and show how the temporal correlation in the input is reflected in the up-conversion process.

NATURE PHOTONICS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 3, 2, 95-98, Feb. 2009, Peer-reviwed, Optical fibres have proved to be an important medium for manipulating and generating light in applications including soliton transmission(1), light amplification(2), all-optical switching(3) and supercontinuum generation(4). In the quantum regime, fibres may prove useful for ultralow-power all-optical signal processing(5) and quantum information processing(6). Here, we demonstrate the first experimental observation of optical nonlinearity at the single-photon level in an optical fibre. Taking advantage of the large nonlinearity and managed dispersion of photonic crystal. bres(7,8), we report very small (1 x 10(-7) to similar to 1 x 10(-8) rad) conditional phase shifts induced by weak coherent pulses that contain one or less than one photon per pulse on average. We discuss the feasibility of quantum information processing using optical fibres, taking into account the observed Kerr nonlinearity, accompanied by ultrafast response time and low induced loss.

By controlling the divergence of the pump beam in parametric down-conversion, the diffraction-interference pattern produced by an object changes from a quantum (perfectly correlated) case to a classical (uncorrelated) one. The observed diffraction and interference patterns are accurately reproduced by Fourier-optical analysis taking into account the quantum spatial correlation. NATURE, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 431, 7005, 167-170, Sep. 2004, Peer-reviwed, Entanglement is one of the key features of quantum information and communications technology. The method that has been used most frequently to generate highly entangled pairs of photons(1,2) is parametric down-conversion. Short-wavelength entangled photons are desirable for generating further entanglement between three or four photons, but it is difficult to use parametric down-conversion to generate suitably energetic entangled photon pairs. One method that is expected to be applicable for the generation of such photons(3) is resonant hyper-parametric scattering (RHPS): a pair of entangled photons is generated in a semiconductor via an electronically resonant third-order non-linear optical process. Semiconductor-based sources of entangled photons would also be advantageous for practical quantum technologies, but attempts to generate entangled photons in semiconductors have not yet been successful(4,5). Here we report experimental evidence for the generation of ultraviolet entangled photon pairs by means of biexciton resonant RHPS in a single crystal of the semiconductor CuCl. We anticipate that our results will open the way to the generation of entangled photons by current injection, analogous to current-driven single photon sources(6,7).

With two-photon detection, the biphoton exhibits a diffraction-interference pattern equivalent to that of an effective single particle that is associated with half the wavelength of the constituent photons. With one-photon detection, however, no diffraction-interference pattern is observed. We show that these phenomena originate from the spatial quantum correlation between the down-converted photons.

  • Diffraction and interference of entangled photon pairs generated by parametric down-conversion: A spatial correlation effect

2003 European Quantum Electronics Conference, EQEC 2003, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 341, 2003, Peer-reviwed, Diffraction-interference patterns of parametric down-converted photons through a transmission grating by both one- and two-photon detection schemes are presented. The measured patterns are explained by the Fourier analysis of the two-photon wave packet, considering the quantum spatial correlation between the constituent photons. Spatial diffraction-interference patterns were recorded by a two-photon detector consisting of two avalanche photodiodes. For comparison, diffraction-interference patterns of Ti:sapphire laser are also observed using the same apparatus (a uncorrelated case).

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 89, 21, 213601/1-4, Nov. 2002, Peer-reviwed, Using a basic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we demonstrate experimentally the measurement of the photonic de Broglie wavelength of entangled photon pairs (biphotons) generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The observed interference manifests the concept of the photonic de Broglie wavelength. We also discuss the phase uncertainty obtained from the experiment.

Technical Digest - Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference, QELS 2001, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 69-70, 2001, Peer-reviwed, Summary form only given. Recently, Jacobson et al. ( see Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.74, p. 4835 (1995)) proposed the concept of "photonic de Broglie wave" in multiphoton states. They argued that the photonic de Broglie wavelength of an ensemble of photons with wavelength λ0 and average number of photons N can be measured using a special interferometer with "effective beam splitters" that do not split the multiphoton states into constituent photons. Fonseca et al. see Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 82, p. 2868 (1999)) measured the photonic de Broglie wavelength of a two-photon state ("biphoton") using a kind of Young's interferometer. We propose and demonstrate the measurement of photonic de Broglie wavelength of biphotons generated by parametric down-conversion utilizing the usual Mach-Zehnder interferometer.
