Paper

  • Decline-stage Analysis of Product Life Cycles for Electronic Equipment
    Takashi Sakamoto; Kenji Yura
    J. Jpn. Ind. Manage. Assoc, Japan Industrial Management Association, 66, 4, 327-334, 2016, Peer-reviwed, In current society, new electronic equipment is developed and used according to the needs of consumers. As time passes, the products become obsolete as the result of competitive product development, and they are replaced by products with more or improved functions and offered at a cheaper price. The product life cycle is referred to as "PLC" and it consists of four stages: introduction, growth, maturity and decline. In the decline stage of the PLC, the manufacturer has to analyze the market behavior, and judge how long the current product will be sold and when the next-generation product will be introduced. This paper proposes a new model and methods to analyze the decline stage. On the background of the decline behavior in the PLC for electronic equipment, technological progress enables various functions to be incorporated into a single product according to a consumers need. This paper focuses on the shift from single-function products to multifunction products, and analyzes the phenomena using a regression analysis for current products and determining the number of newly developed products to produce.

  • Online scheduling aiming to satisfy due date for flexible flow shops
    K Takaku; K Yura
JSME INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL SERIES C-MECHANICAL SYSTEMS MACHINE ELEMENTS AND MANUFACTURING, JAPAN SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 48, 1, 21-25, Mar. 2005, Peer-reviwed, The simplest method for making a production schedule is dispatch of jobs to idle machine tools. The method has a tendency of making a compact and efficient schedule, however the completion time of a job is not determined till the job is selected as the next job on an idle machine. Then, online scheduling methods have been developed, in which the production schedule is made as a job arrives at a machine. In this paper, an online scheduling method is developed for flexible flow shops under the due-date related criteria. A special feature of the method is to set the target completion time for each job and each stage. By numerical experiments, it is clarified that the method is better than FIFO (First In First Out) rule and especially the performance of the online scheduling is greatly superior to FIFO for the shops with heavy workload.

  • Interactive multi-shift scheduling to satisfy worker's preferences on shift and days-off
    G Shiotani; K Yura
JSME INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL SERIES C-MECHANICAL SYSTEMS MACHINE ELEMENTS AND MANUFACTURING, JAPAN SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 48, 1, 26-30, Mar. 2005, Peer-reviwed, Multi-shifts working condition is harder than the single shift one, and it is expected that the working condition be improved. One of approaches for the improvement is to make the work schedule so as to achieve the worker's preference on it as large as possible. The preference depends on each of workers and it may vary with the time. Tackling with such a situation, an interactive multi-shift scheduling method is proposed in the paper. The method checks the feasibility of workers' preferences, makes a fundamental shift schedule, and improves the schedule by shifts exchange between the workers. A necessary condition of a feasible schedule is clarified, and a prescreening procedure on the feasibility is developed. By the method, the workers' preferences on shifts are reflected in the shift schedule as large as possible.

  • Cyclic schedules in production and operations management
    Kenji Yura
International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management, 3, 3, 273-292, 2001, The peculiar feature of cyclic schedules is the repetitive occurrence of a pattern in the schedule. Such schedules often appear in manufacturing environments and the scheduling problems have attracted considerable attention. In this article, after explaining the typical analytical methods, some important features and planning procedures are explained for cyclic scheduling of flow-shop type manufacturing systems, job-shop-type manufacturing systems, and other related problems in manufacturing activities. © 2001 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

International Journal of Manufacturing Technology and Management, 3, 3, 325-337, 2001, Green and clean environment is a watchword in the current society. Government-supported activities are directed towards making the surroundings cleaner and greener. Industries are penalized if their effect on the environment goes beyond a certain tolerable limit. The strict control measures imposed by the government and consumers have forced industries to adopt changes in their production methods to reduce pollution and refuse dumping levels. Many industries are of course tackling the problems positively by themselves. Recycling methods are practised by major industries and institutes to reduce impact on the environment. In this article, a new approach which aims at ‘Recycling-Oriented Industrial Systems (or Complex)’ is proposed to prevent environmental degradation. In this new system the reuse of industrial waste is given major attention. In order to accomplish this task more efficiently, production and waste treatment facilities must be unified to become like the circulation system of human blood. Reproduction and reuse of objects are studied meticulously along with information flow and the evaluation of the economy from the viewpoint of an engineering design. The new system intends to make the world a better, safer and cleaner place to live. © 2001 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • Parts-mix analysis in recycling-oriented manufacturing systems for multiple-item production
    K Yura; H Ishikura; K Hitomi
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 38, 2, 447-456, Jan. 2000, One solution to environmental problems is to construct a recycling-oriented manufacturing system, in which waste products after consumption are collected, and reusable parts in the collected products are employed to produce new products. A parts-mix in the manufacturing system for multiple-item production is analysed by taking into consideration the merits and demerits of the usage of common parts over multiple products and special parts utilized for individual products. The parts-mix problem is formulated to minimize the life-cycle cost, which consists of production costs and recycling costs. The property of the optimal parts-mix is clarified, and a decision procedure to solve the parts-mix is developed. The procedure decides whether the common parts are effective or not.

    K Yura
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 60-1, 523-528, Apr. 1999, Peer-reviwed, A scheduling method is elucidated for the re-entrant manufacturing systems, where the process route of a job passes production facilities one or more times. The objectives of the scheduling problem are maximization of the production rate as a primary one and minimization of the throughput time as a secondary one. The method makes the cyclic schedule, where an adequate number of jobs are treated as a lot and the lot is cyclically released into the system. The lot size is determined to maximize the production rate, and a sequencing method of the lots is developed to minimize the throughput time. (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. • OPTIMIZATION ANALYSIS FOR RECYCLE-ORIENTED MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS
    T HOSHINO; K YURA; K HITOMI
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD LONDON, 33, 8, 2069-2078, Aug. 1995, Peer-reviwed, Recycling has been recently recognized as one of effective tools for solving environmental problems. In this respect present and future manufacturing systems should take the recycling of materials used into consideration. This paper points out the issues contained in such a recycle-oriented manufacturing system, then the basic parts-flow in the product's life cycle is clarified by taking account of re-use and re-production of the parts contained in the product. A model is constructed to maximize two measures of performance-total profit and recycling rate. This is solved by goal programming. Finally, a numerical example is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model proposed.

  • PRODUCTION SCHEDULING TO SATISFY WORKERS PREFERENCES FOR DAYS OFF AND OVERTIME UNDER DUE-DATE CONSTRAINTS
    K YURA
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION ECONOMICS, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 33, 1-3, 265-270, Jan. 1994, Peer-reviwed, A worker's satisfaction level on a production schedule is an important factor to sustain the worker's morale. An ideal production schedule for the worker accords with the worker's preferences for days off, overtime, and so on. However, production schedules may not always satisfy the worker's preferences, because the schedules must often satisfy job due dates. This paper describes a production scheduling problem which seeks to satisfy the worker's preferences under due-date constraints. A scheduling problem is considered with the objective of satisfying the worker's wishes on days off without overtime. The solution may not always satisfy all of the workers' preferences when the work loads are too heavy. Then a scheduling problem is analyzed which minimizes the total overtime necessary to satisfy all the workers' preferences. These scheduling problems are formulated as linear goal programming problems, and a numerical example is given.
