IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90B, 6, 1313-1321, Jun. 2007, Peer-reviwed, We propose a method of crosstalk analysis for two bent transmission lines with vias at both ends on a PCB using a circuit-concept approach in the quasi-static condition. In this condition, the electromagnetic fields can be approximately estimated by the quasi-static terms of the accurate Green's function in an inhomogeneous medium. Thus we obtain a circuit model in an ABCD matrix by taking account of the fields generated by a longitudinal line and a vertical via on a PCB. To verify the proposed approach, we conducted some experiments and compared our approach's results with measured results and a commercial electromagnetic solver's results.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90B, 6, 1305-1312, Jun. 2007, Peer-reviwed, The crosstalks between a single-ended line and a differential pair in parallel are analyzed using telegrapher's equations for multiconductor lines. The crosstalk from the single-ended trace to the differential pair is estimated at shunt-arm resistors in T or H termination networks. The analysis is conducted by incorporating the termination conditions with the solution of the telegrapher's equations. The time-domain characteristics of the crosstalk are obtained by using the fast inverse Laplace transform. The measurements are conducted easily by using a single-ended digital oscilloscope since the crosstalk is evaluated on the shunt-arm resistors. Both the calculated and measured results are presented, and the characteristics of the crosstalk are also investigated qualitatively.

  • Application of rotating-EM field to four-septum TEM cell for radiated immunity/susceptibility test

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90B, 6, 1322-1328, Jun. 2007, Peer-reviwed, A new radio-frequency (RF) radiated immunity/susceptibility test method using four-septum TEM cell is proposed. A rotating-EM field can be generated inside the cell by feeding four-different RF DSB-SC signals to four septa arranged in the cell. Since a polarization plane of the rotating-EM field rotates in a low speed, the immunity/susceptibility test for the EM field with various polarizations can be conducted more easily. In this paper, a technique for generating the rotating-EM field in the cell is investigated. The basic characteristics of the cell and the rotating-EM field by using the technique are clarified. To verify the validity of this test method, a RF radiated susceptibility of a printed Circuit board is measured. The measured results are verified by comparing with the theoretical results based on modified telegrapher's equations.

  • Crosstalk analysis for two bent lines using circuit model
Sang Wook Park; Fengchao Xiao; Dong Chul Park; Yoshio Kami
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90B, 2, 323-330, Feb. 2007, Peer-reviwed, The crosstalk phenomenon, wich occurs between transmission lines, is caused by electromagnetic fields of currents flowing through the lines. Crosstalk between two bent lines is studied by using a set of solutions of modified telegrapher's equations. By expressing electromagnetic fields in terms of voltages and currents in the line ends, the resultant network function in the form of an ABCD matrix is obtained. Electromagnetic fields caused by currents flowing in risers at transmission line ends are taken into account in addition to those fields in line sections. The validity of the proposed approach was confirmed by comparing experimental results with computed results and those simulated by a commercial electromagnetic solver for some bent-line models.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E88B, 8, 3133-3139, Aug. 2005, Peer-reviwed, A new generation method of rotating electromagnetic fields (rotating-EM fields) for radio frequency (RF) radiated immunity/susceptibility test and its basic characteristics are described. Two different double-side-band suppressed-carrier (DSB-SC) signals are required for generating the slowly rotating-EM field for the immunity/susceptibility test. These DSB-SC signals are generated by a DSB-SC-signal generator based on the new concept which consists of voltage-variable attenuators, bi-phase switches, a direct-digital synthesizer and a micro processor. Using the DSB-SC-signal generator, the DSB-SC signal of arbitrary RF frequency can be generated more easily than the conventional system. In this paper, the principle of the DSB-SC signal generator and the basic characteristics of the DSB-SC signals generated by the generator are clarified. The measured basic characteristics of the rotating-EM field generated using the new concept are shown and it is confirmed that the field can be applied for the RF immunity/susceptibility test. In addition, the susceptibility test of an equipment under test is made as an example, the validity of our proposed system is established.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E88B, 8, 3146-3151, Aug. 2005, Peer-reviwed, The four-septum transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell is like the traditional TEM cell but has four plate-like septa in the internal space. A slowly rotating field can be easily generated in the four-septum TEM cell, thus radiated immunity/susceptibility characteristics of an EUT under arbitrary specific polarizations can be measured without rearranging the test setup. A design approach for the four-septum TEM cell is discussed in this paper. The characteristics of the cell are analyzed based on the telegrapher's equation and decomposition of the transmission mode into four independent modes. Then a design approach is given based on the analytical results. A prototype of the four-septum TEM cell based on the design is constructed and the characteristics of the prototype cell are experimentally evaluated. The validity and effectiveness of the design approach are confirmed.

  • Characteristics of electrically long two-conductor lines with inhomogeneous media
O Makino; FC Xiao; Y Kami
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E88B, 7, 3028-3035, Jul. 2005, Peer-reviwed, Crosstalk or coupling phenomenon between two parallel conductors with a ground or reference conductor is well known in electromagnetic compatibility and microwave circuit fields. In this paper we consider the characteristics of a long two-conductor line embedded in an inhomogeneous medium while taking account of the difference between two phase constants in independent propagation modes of two parallel lines. The characteristics of near-end and far-end crosstalk and of through-end transmission are discussed for frequencies up to more than the frequency where the line length is 10 times the wavelength. Interesting properties, such as very strong and null crosstalk phenomena that occur at the far end and non-transmission at the through end, appear in the envelope characteristics. The reason for these properties is clarified by making theoretical and experimental investigations.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E87B, 8, 2327-2334, Aug. 2004, Peer-reviwed, Common-mode excitation caused by an imperfect ground plane on a printed circuit board (PCB) has been conventionally explained with the 'current driven' scheme, in which the common-mode current is driven by the g-round voltage across the unintentional inductance of the ground plane. We have developed an alternative method for estimating common-mode excitation that is driven by the difference of the common-mode voltages for two connected transmission lines. A parameter called current division factor (CDF) that represents the degree of imbalance of a transmission line explains the common-mode voltage. In this paper, we calculate the CDF with two-dimensional (2-D) static electric field analysis by using the boundary element method (BEM) for asymmetric transmission lines with an arbitrary cross-section. The proposed 2-D method requires less time than three-dimensional simulations. The EMI increase due to a signal line being close to the edge of the ground pattern was evaluated through CDF calculation. The estimated increase agreed well-within 2 dB-with the measured one.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENT, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 53, 4, 1184-1191, Aug. 2004, Peer-reviwed, An immunity/susceptibility test method using electromagnetic waves of rotating polarization is described and test results are discussed. Low-rate rotation of the field polarization is controlled electrically and continuously in a two-dimensional plane, so that radiated immunity/susceptibility characteristics that are three-dimensionally depicted can be obtained by using a turntable together with this method. This paper explains how the rotating fields are generated, and discusses experimentally measured characteristics of several test examples. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method for quickly visualizing the weak/strong immunity/susceptibility directions, demonstrating its usefulness for application in the trial phase of a product development.

2004 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, SYMPOSIUM RECORD 1-3, IEEE, 89-92, 2004, Peer-reviwed, The evaluation method of electromagnetic-shielding capability and three-dimensional susceptibility map for an actual housing of electronic equipment are studied. Although the shielding capability of an enclosure is conventionally evaluated using shielding effectiveness (SE), it is feared that the immunity/susceptibility-weak points of the enclosure are overlooked. In this paper, the susceptibility of an actual personal computer housing as an equipment under test (EUT) is measured using rotating electromagnetic field. Experimental results show that the evaluation using susceptibility is more effective than the conventional SE. In addition, the test method is more effective to specify the immunity/susceptibility-weak points of EUT visually and easily. Furthermore, it is shown that the condition of the incident EM field and the arrangement position of an EM-field sensor seriously affect the susceptibility of the actual housing.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E86B, 4, 1377-1382, Apr. 2003, In this paper, we propose a passive imaging system for noise-source identification using time-domain waveform sampling. The fundamental concepts are based on optics theory. A waveform of a diffracted field over an entrance pupil is obtained by a digitizing oscilloscope. The phase distributions over the entrance pupil for each frequency are calculated by using Fourier transform of the acquired waveforms. Thus, an image on the focal plane is reconstructed by using inverse Fresnel transform. The most significant advantage of the proposed method is that an image for each frequency can be obtained separately. We confirmed that the proposed method can be used for practical noise-source identification, by experimentally obtaining images for an emission from personal computers.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 44, 1, 119-124, Feb. 2002, Peer-reviwed, A new measurement system and a mapping technique for immunity or susceptibility testing are discussed. The most unique point of the system is that the electromagnetic (EM) fields are of slowly rotating polarization controlled electronically. In this paper, methods for generating slowly rotating fields are discussed. The direction of field polarization can be varied continuously and in a short time. By combining the method with a turntable, for example, the immunity- or susceptibility-characteristic maps can be obtained easily. This visualization technique is useful to detect the immunity or susceptibility attributes at a glance and thus may make the development of products with high immunity easy.

  • Crosstalk effects from a cascaded line with different heights to a transmission line
    WK Liu; Y Kami
2002 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, IEEE, 91-94, 2002, Crosstalk or coupling characteristics between a cascaded line with an abrupt step on the way and a straight transmission line of finite length are discussed comparing measured and calculated results. To analyze the coupling phenomenon, a modified telegrapher's equation including the effects of external fields to the lines system is derived. The fields can be obtained by estimating vector potenials of currents in the line and the termianl. sections, where the terminals are fabricated like a configuration as "via". A four-port network expression on voltages and currents at each terminal is obtained from solutions of the equation. We have done some experiments to appraise the utility of the theory used here by comparing transmission characteristics.

  • The use of via holes for controlling the crosstalk of non-parallel microstrip lines on PCBs
    F Xiao; K Murano; Y Kami
2002 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, VOLS 1 AND 2, SYMPOSIUM RECORD, IEEE, 633-638, 2002, Peer-reviwed, In this work, the metal filled via holes are constructed into fences between the non-parallel microstrip lines to control the crosstalk. In practice, coupling between non-parallel traces is common. On the other hand, via holes are easy and inexpensive to build using the current fabrication process for the commonly used PCBs. The effects of the via holes for alleviating the coupling are investigated experimentally and numerically. The crosstalk is controlled by adjusting the position of the via holes, the structure of via fence, and the length of the via fence. Some design guidelines for the proper placement of the via holes are concluded. Experiments are conducted and the calculated results are compared with the measured data.

  • An imaging system for EM emitting sources using a six-port interferometer
    H Hirayama; T Yakabe; Y Kami
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E84C, 12, 1885-1891, Dec. 2001, Peer-reviwed, A Fourier-optics based imaging system for electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources is presented. It is necessary to decrease undesired emissions in order to meet EMI requirements. To investigate this problem, a visualization of electromagnetic (EM) emitting fields is very useful. In this paper. we propose a passive imaging system of EM emitting fields based on Fourier optics. Amplitude and phase values of diffracted fields on an entrance pupil are acquired by using a six-port interferometer. The measured EM fields are then processed on a computer, and an image is retrieved using an inverse Fresnel transform. Experiments are presented, which demonstrate the potential of the proposed method. The proposed system is useful not only in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) but also for scientific elucidation to discuss the optics and microwave theory of the same viewpoint.

In the circuit-concept modeling, a set of equations for the line voltages and currents has been derived from a modified telegrapher's equation. A four-port network expression is resultantly obtained by solving the equations, thus the crosstalk can be predicted by applying terminal conditions to the network expression. On the other band, the extended finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used to model the terminal resistors and the feeding resistive voltage source in the crosstalk analysis. Several physical models have been fabricated and experiments were performed. The calculated results are compared to measurements. In our experiment, for microstrip lines of finite length and arbitrary orientation, there are short line-sections or vias at each of the four ports, which should be incorporated into the crosstalk analysis. This effect has been investigated numerically and experimentally.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E84C, 3, 364-375, Mar. 2001, Peer-reviwed, Fuzzy inference abilities were implemented to electromagnetic problems for the first time by the authors. After very successful results of applying the developed fuzzy modeling method to input impedance of a general monopole antenna, in this paper classifying the engineering electromagnetic problems simply, we apply the abilities of the proposed fuzzy inference method to make a qualitative model for transmission fines as a general example for a certain category of problems. The proposed approach starts from observing the problem through the window of human direct understandings and uses some parameters las calculation base) evaluated basic for modeling process. It is shown that because of using this novel view point, a very simple fuzzy system based on new parameters may model the behavior of a transmission line in general form. The knowledge of each variable can be extracted and saved as simple curves individually through continuing to make several models considering the desired variable as parameter. Finally, it is shown that the proposed method works even in highly nonuniform transmission line cases without changing in structure and complexity.

2001 IEEE EMC INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, VOLS 1 AND 2, IEEE, 374-377, 2001, Fourier optics based imaging system for EMI sources is discussed. Recently, it is required to decrease undesired emission in order to prevent from EMI. To investigate this problem, a visualization of EM emitting fields ig very useful. In this paper, we propose a passive imaging system of EM emitting fields based on Fourier-optics. The complex amplitude values of diffracted fields on an entrance pupil are acquired by using a 6-port correlator which acts as an interferometer. Measured EM fields are then processed by a computer and an image is retrieved using Fresnel inverse transform.

  • A study of three-dimensional immunity characteristics of an EUT using low-speed rotation fields
    K Murano; Y Kami
2001 IEEE EMC INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, VOLS 1 AND 2, IEEE, 527-530, 2001, Three-dimensional radiated immunity characteristics of an equipment is discussed. Here, the incident fields to an equipment under test (EUT) are rotated at a very low speed on a plane. By applying the fields of low-speed rotation (rotating fields) to the EUT, the directional immunity characteristic in a plane can be obtained automatically. Moreover, by setting the EUT on a turntable, the three-dimensional (3D) immunity map can also be achieved. In this paper, to show the capabilities of the developed method, the immunity test of a rectangular cavity with a slit is attempted by a trial setup as an example. Experimental results show that the radiated immunity characteristics of EUT are obtained in detail.

2001 IEEE EMC INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, VOLS 1 AND 2, IEEE, 1111-1116, 2001, When two transmission lines(TLs) such as microstrip lines are set in the neighborhood, coupling or crosstalk fileds may be generated between them. To investigate fields caused by passive circuits, coupled printed-circuit traces are focused. The fields can be obtained by estimating vector potentials of currents in the line and the terminal sections, where the terminal are fabricated like a configuration as "via". The filter performace characteristics and the fields at frequencies of pass and stop bands of the filters are mearsured and calculated; the results show that the currents at the line terminals affect seriously, and the fields exist even at frequencies of the stop band.

  • Low frequency radiated immunity test using three-dimensional Helmholtz-coil set
    K Murano; Y Kami
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E83B, 3, 467-473, Mar. 2000, Peer-reviwed, A radiated immunity test method using fields in a three-dimensional Helmholtz-coil set is described. The incident field to equipment under test (EUT) is generated by art orthogonally structured three sets of Helmholtz coil. Using this structure, the resultant field can be generated with arbitrary amplitude and direction. Therefore, the three dimensional immunity characteristics of an EUT can be cleared. Thf resultant field is calculated numerically and ii. is established that the field distribution is uniform inside the three dimensional Helmholtz-coil set. This is also confirmed through comparison with measured results. As an example, the immunity test of a cathode ray tube (CRT) display is made and the immunity map of CRT is obtained without resecting placement of EUT. Such map makes us understand the physical meaning and weak points.

  • Time domain coupling between non-parallel transmission lines
    W Liu; Y Kami
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E80B, 11, 1639-1644, Nov. 1997, Peer-reviwed, Coupling in time domain between two nonparallel transmission lines of finite length is analyzed by using a circuit concept. Coupling equations based on the Maxwell's equations for lossless transmission lines in a homogeneous medium are written by a set of non-homogeneous differential equations including distributed source terms produced by external electromagnetic fields. The forcing terms are expressed by vector potentials generated by currents in the line section and at the transitions. A set of solutions in frequency domain is obtained by a four-port network expression with regard to the terminal voltages and currents, and can be applied to estimation of the frequency-domain crosstalk. Utilizing the inverse Fast Fourier transform (FFT), the crosstalk responses between the lines is studied in lime domain. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results shows the validity of the method.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E80B, 11, 1645-1651, Nov. 1997, Peer-reviwed, This paper analyzes mechanisms of radiated emissions from multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) and presents a model to describe the characteristics of such radiation. The radiation mechanism from a four-layer PCB, including the internal power and ground planes, is investigated using a time-domain magnetic field measurement near the PCB. Measurement of the waveform indicates that the main source of radiation is in the power distribution planes. To investigate the characteristics of the radiation from the power distribution, the S(21)s of the board are measured; the board impedance and the transmission characteristics of the power distribution planes are found to be directly related to the Sql between the two points in the board. The results indicate that the power distribution acts as a transmission line al frequencies higher than 100 MHz. A model that can explain well the radiation properties of these planes treats them as a parallel-plate transmission line interconnected by decoupling circuit comprising a decoupling capacitor and interconnect inductance. From the transmission line theory it is deduced that the line resonance gives rise to strong radiated emissions. The interconnect inductance is an important factor in determining radiation characteristics.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 39, 3, 201-211, Aug. 1997, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we study time-domain and frequency-domain responses of nonuniform and uniform transmission lines excited by incident electromagnetic waves, Externally excited uniform transmission lines permit closed-form solutions in terms of inverse chain matrix, whereas nonuniform lines cannot be analytically solved, in general, Here, we adopt a method of equivalent cascaded network chain as the method of solving the latter situation, Useful and compact expressions for the load currents induced at terminal loads are derived, To confirm the validity of this method and the forcing terms, theoretical and experimental results of coupling calculations for a few typical (uniform/nonuniform) line geometries, relevant in the EMC field, are presented and discussed.

    Y Kami; M Kimura
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E79B, 4, 497-502, Apr. 1996, Peer-reviwed, The coupling response of an external transient electromagnetic field to a transmission line is considered. An experiment has been conducted to verify the line equations for a transmission line excited externally by a transient near field. The model field is generated by a monopole antenna installed in the vicinity of the transmission line and driven by a step waveform. The waveform is analyzed into discrete spectrum components using a Fourier transform. The frequency-domain field components affecting the transmission line are estimated by the moment method, and then the induced frequency-domain voltage at the terminal load is converted into a time-domain voltage using an inverse Fourier transform. Comparison between the measured and the computed values provides verification of the line equations. The coupling mechanism is discussed from the experimental results. It seems equivalently that the transmission line picks up the field, generated at the feed point and the top point of the monopole antenna, at both terminal ends.
