    Dr. Yasushi Yamao (yyamao@m.ieice.org) received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in electronics engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1977, 1979, and 1998, respectively.

    In 1979, he joined the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) Laboratories, Japan, where his major activities included research on the GMSK modulator / demodulator and GaAs RF ICs for digital mobile communications, and development of PDC digital cellular handheld phones. In 1993, he moved to NTT DoCoMo, Inc., where he conducted standardization and development of the FLEX-TD high-speed paging system. From 1999 to 2002, he conducted studies on the fourth generation mobile communications system and was involved in the European Commission’s 5th Framework Program IST project BRAIN. He was Vice President and Managing Director of Radio Systems Development Department, NTT DoCoMo, Inc (2004-2005). He is the author and a co-author of more than 50 transaction and conference papers and holds more than 60 patents in the area of mobile communications.

    He is a member of IEEE and IEICE, and served as Vice Chairman of the IEICE Technical Group on Radio Communication Systems (2001-2002) and Vice President of the IEICE Communications Society (2003-2004). He also served as the TPC member of many international conferences such as the IEEE PIMRC 2002,2003,2004,2005, 2006, WPMC03, and MDMC2004.

Addition of a relay station (RS) can improve packet delivery rate (PDR) of CSMA/CA-based V2VC. However, the improvement is limited by packet collision at RS due to a hidden terminal (HT). This HT problem can be alleviated by employing sectorised receive antenna at RS, i.e. sectorised relay-assisted (SR-) V2VC. However, SR-V2VC still faces another problem, i.e. packet congestion at RS under high traffic conditions due to the improved packet reception rate. This leads to packet drop at RS and hence limits the improvement brought by SR-V2VC. Consequently, it is crucial to introduce a kind of traffic congestion avoidance methods to RS. In this article, the authors propose SR-V2VC with a payload combining forwarding (PCF) method (SR-V2VC/ PCF) and theoretically evaluate the system performance using a CSMA/CA collision model. Large-scale computer simulations are also conducted to confirm the performance improvement brought by SR-V2VC/PCF. It is shown that the lowest broadcast PDR of 62% for the non-relay system is improved to higher than 81% by SR-V2VC/PCF and the directivity of the sector antenna has impact on the benefit of the proposed scheme.

    Journal of Information Processing, Information Processing Society of Japan, 26, Jan., 11-19, 01 Jan. 2018, Peer-reviwed, CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) based relay-assisted V2V scheme is effective in compensating shadowing loss and hence improves performance of ITS V2V communications, especially for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) areas such as intersections. However, when the number of vehicle stations becomes large, packet congestion happens frequently at the relay station (RS). It causes interruption of packet relaying transmission and limits the improvement by the scheme. This paper proposes a packet payload combining relay (PCRL) scheme to alleviate the congestion issue at RS by compressing packet overheads of broadcast packets. With adaptive modulation and coding technique at RS, PCRL can further mitigate the packet interruption by reducing the air time of relayed packets. Time division grouping method is also applied to PCRL to mitigate the hidden terminal problem at intersections. Analyzed and simulated results show that the proposed schemes can effectively mitigate packet congestion issue and improve the reliability of the V2V communication.

  • Composite Effect of E/O Nonlinearity and Optical Echo on EPWM-OFDM Transmission in Radio Over Fiber Channel

    WIRELESS PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, SPRINGER, 93, 3, 647-660, Apr. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Radio over Fiber (RoF) is a promising technology for extending broadband wireless access to indoor and outdoor dead spots. However, commonly applied intensity-modulation / direct-detection RoF transmission presents some nonlinearity and produces echo distortion. Since multiple carrier modulation signals such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) are widely employed in broadband wireless systems, the above issues become more serious. The OFDM signals have high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio, which makes them more sensitive to nonlinearity. Moreover, the large delay of optical echoes that are caused by the discontinuity of refractive index at both ends of Electrical/Optical (E/O) and Optical/Electrical converters exceeds the guard time of current OFDM symbols when the length of optical fiber is long. Since the nonlinearity and echo exist simultaneously in RoF channels, their composite effect is mathematically analyzed in this paper. A RoF-echo model is proposed for the modeling of the multiple light reflections and its validity is confirmed by experiments. Then, Envelop-Pulse-Width-Modulation- (EPWM-) RoF transmission is proposed for dealing with the nonlinearity and echo in RoF channel. The performance of the EPWM-RoF scheme for OFDM signal transmission is evaluated by simulations, which reveals that the scheme improves the transmission quality in Error Vector Magnitude under the composite environment of E/O nonlinearity and optical echo.

    IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 14, 11, 5998-6011, Nov. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Conventional Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) multi-hop transmission suffers severely from intra-flow interference (IFI) in dense traffic, due to the hidden terminal (HT) problem. We propose a non-CSMA/CA multi-hop transmission scheme with IFI-canceler (IFIC) that can efficiently relay packets under high traffic loads in fading environments. This interference cancellation technique employs adaptive equalization with a normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm for channel estimation and has good BER/PER performance under a wide range of SNR and SIR conditions. It is also capable of canceling multiple interference sources. A multi-hop packet transmission frame format dedicated to the IFIC proposal is designed. An analysis model is created that considers possible outage events in multi-hop traffic flows. Simulations of multi-hop transmission indicate that IFIC throughput under slow Rayleigh fading linearly increases with traffic load and is 3.5 times higher than that of current CSMA/CA systems at the highest normalized traffic load. When 2-branch maximal-ratio combining (MRC) reception is added after IC, the throughput is further improved to a level very close to the theoretical maximum for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We also assess the impact of maximum Doppler frequency, and show that the best performance is maintained if the frequency is less than 10 Hz and the performance under higher Doppler frequencies can be effectively improved by retransmission.

  • Spectra-Folding Feedback Architecture for Concurrent Dual-Band Power Amplifier Predistortion

Conventional dual-band DPD contains a dual-branch feedback path to receive the PA output signals at respective bands. The proposed architecture, however, is constructed by a single-branch receiving path, so that the hardware expense (such as down converters, filters, or analog-to-digital converters) of the feedback path is significantly reduced. In this architecture, simple modifications are made to the down converter to allow the use of only one analog-to-digital converter. With the proposed signal processing in the baseband, the SFFB DPD can achieve comparative performance as the conventional dual-branch DPD. Experiments were performed using various configurations of LTE/LTE-Advanced (long-term evolution/long-term evolution advanced) signals of up to 80 MHz contiguous bandwidth and carrier spacing of 1 GHz. It is clearly shown by the experimental results that the proposed SFFB DPD can achieve satisfactory linearization performance, with significantly reduced hardware complexity.

In order to make efficient use of frequency spectrum and to reduce circuits in a terminal, a low-loss reconfigurable RF filter is necessary to flexibly change RF frequencies. In this paper, a new reconfigurable bandpass filter (BPF) having eight-frequency (three-bit) selection capability is proposed. It employs branch-line switched type variable resonators that provide low insertion loss. One of the design issues is how to control pass bandwidths among selectable frequencies. In order to analyze the bandwidth variation of the reconfigurable BPF, we calculate the changes of external Q and coupling coefficients. It is shown that the inductive coupling design can achieve less variation of bandwidth for the reconfigurable BPF, compared with commonly used capacitive coupling design. A prototype BPF on a printed circuit board with high dielectric constant substrate has been fabricated and evaluated in 2 GHz bands. It presents performance very close to the design results with respect to insertion loss, center frequency and passband bandwidth. Low insertion loss of less than 1 dB is achieved among the eight frequencies.

    WIRELESS PERSONAL COMMUNICATIONS, SPRINGER, 82, 3, 1505-1529, Jun. 2015, Peer-reviwed, The Sine Non-linear Chirp Keying (SNCK) is one kind of the SFM schemes, which play an important role as the commonly useful signals in sonar, radar and wireless communication systems. By adjusting its time-bandwidth product, the SNCK can satisfy different requirements of the quality of service and has better ability in Doppler shift inhibition than the ordinary MSK. However, no mathematical analysis for the time-bandwidth product (modulation factor) estimation of the SNCK scheme has been available. In this paper, a SCD-based estimation algorithm for the modulation factor of the SNCK scheme has been proposed. The mathematical model and diagrams of the three-dimensional SCD and the corresponding bi-frequency plane make it easy to understand how the SCD-based algorithm localizes the center frequency and the keying rate, as well as estimates the modulation factor. The simulation results show that the proposed estimation algorithm is useful under different SNR conditions. The corresponding Cramer-Rao lower bound are derived and used as the reference of the estimation algorithm. Moreover, we improve the estimation algorithm when the modulation factor varies, by using a set of the local ratio data, which compensates the differences between the simulation ratio values and the theoretical ratio results. This algorithm can be effective for the communication system with the SNCK scheme to synchronize the carrier and the symbol, as well as to demodulate the transmitted signals with unknown parameters. It is concluded that the obvious features of the SCD can be extracted for other similar signals with high reliability.

    Journal of Information Processing, 21, 1, 90-98, 2013, Peer-reviwed, The reliability of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in real road environments suffers from fading, shadowing and the hidden terminal problem, especially for non-line-of sight (NLOS) areas such as intersections. In order to improve the communication reliability, a CSMA/CA based vehicle-roadside-vehicle broadcast relay network was proposed and its effectiveness has been shown through simulations. However, the potential of such a network has not been well analyzed and optimized. In this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to analyze the performance of the broadcast relay network in detail. In order to fit real vehicular environments, the model assumes a typical crossroad and takes into account fading, shadowing, the hidden terminal problem and the capture effect. The influence of system parameters including position of nodes, carrier sense threshold and RF frequency band on the reliability of the network is studied based on the model. The accuracy of the proposed analytical model is confirmed by simulations. The analytical model and the obtained results are useful for the design of vehicular broadcast networks to select appropriate system parameters. © 2013 Information Processing Society of Japan.

  • Overlay cognitive radio OFDM system for 4G cellular networks

On one hand, OFDM is a promising technique for high-speed data transmission over multipath fading channels and has been considered to be the best candidate for 4G mobile networks. On another hand, the overlay cognitive radio model makes it possible to have two concurrent transmissions in a given interference region, where conventionally only one communication takes place at a given time. We investigate different service provision scenarios and propose both time domain and frequency domain overlay cognitive radio OFDM systems for next generation cellular networks. Numerical results show our proposed schemes can achieve satisfying performance in different use cases. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

First, three-DSTBC-WCDMA receiver architectures are proposed and they are: (1) the DSTBC Rake receiver for combined-code (D-Rake-C), (2) the DSTBC deterministic receiver for combined-code (D-Det-C), and (3) the DSTBC deterministic de-prefix receiver for combined-code (D-Det-DP-C). Detection can be divided into a correlator that combines descrambling and despreading, and a DSTBC decoder. The correlator is designed to perform signal separation of the multipath-multiuser signal via least-square (LS) estimation. To enable the correlator to perform signal separation at every block period, the long combined spreading and scrambling codes are divided into shorter codes. Then, the proposed receivers are theoretically analyzed in time-dispersive channels and multiple-user environment using the moment generating function (MGF) of fading distributions. For analyzing interference tolerance, the standard Gaussian approximation is employed. Finally, simulations are performed. Theoretical performance well matches simulated results. Among the three receivers, the D-Det-DP-C receiver has the best performance in time-dispersive channels with a maximum excess delay of 4 chips and a maximum Doppler frequency of 250 Hz. Results also show minimal performance degradation for fast fading channels with a maximum Doppler frequency of 1200 Hz. The best performance is obtained when the receiver has the information on the maximum excess delay and all users' spreading codes.

    IEEE MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS COMPONENTS LETTERS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 14, 3, 121-123, Mar. 2004, A novel scheme is proposed for a compact band-switchable power amplifier that employs Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) switches in a matching network (MN). According to the-on/off status, the switches change the frequency response of the MN, and then the optimum matching can be achieved in different frequency bands. Following the proposed scheme, a dual-band GaAs FET amplifier is designed for the 0.9-GHz and 1.9-GHz bands. The experimental results exhibit the small signal gain of greater than 16 dB and the saturated output power of 31 dBm in each frequency band with adequate efficiency. The performance levels are very close to those of single-mode power amplifiers employing the same FET.

  • Digital predistortion linearizer for compensating frequency-dependent IM distortion

The proposed predistortion linearizer is equipped with distortion generation paths that consist of odd-order distortion generators, vector regulators and frequency characteristics compensators. The proposed linearizer compensates the frequency characteristics of IMD, which limit the performance of current predistortion linearizers.
    In an experiment, the 3rd- and 5th-order IMD components are successfully suppressed by the proposed predistortion linearizer when a three-tone signal is input. The 3rd- and 5th-order IMD components are less than -60 dB at the output back-off of 3 dB from the 1 dB gain compression point as measured with a single-tone.

The performance of the multi-hop wireless link system is evaluated from the viewpoints of total output power, co-frequency interference characteristics, and the system frequency bandwidth based on a comparison with that of the single-hop wireless link system, which is currently used as a RAN. The proposed system is effective in realizing an enormous approach link capacity from both the total output power and the co-frequency interference viewpoints. From the system frequency bandwidth viewpoint, the optimum number of relays in the multi-hop connection is determined to be three hops in a line-of-sight propagation environment in order to minimize the frequency bandwidth for transferring traffic. We conclude that the multi-hop wireless link system is suitable for new generation mobile communication systems.

Recent rapid developments in mobile communication services have significantly altered the lifestyles of many people. With the, increasing demand for access to the Internet, the amount of data traffic in mobile communication networks has significantly increased and will dominate these networks. Therefore, mobile networks beyond IMT-2000 should offer higher bit rate channels and adapt to multimedia traffic more efficiently. This article first forecasts market trends in mobile communications in order to identify requirements of the mobile communications system beyond IMT-2000. Then the article considers the network architecture of the mobile communications system beyond IMT-2000 that will satisfy those requirements.

  • Complexity reduction of turbo decoding

The complexity reduction scheme combines concatenation of CRC with turbo coding and incorporates a CRC error-detection flag for terminating schemes of decoding iteration. The impact of the scheme on complexity reduction of turbo decoding is investigated using several coding parameters such as the maximum number of decoding iterations and interleaver length of the turbo codes. Miss-detection probability of CRC error-detection is also investigated in this paper.

High data rate requires broad frequency bands. and sufficient broadband can be achieved in higher frequency bands such as microwave. Ka-band and millimeter-wave. Broadband wireless channels have to be connected to broadband fixed networks such as the Internet and local area networks. The future generation systems will include not only cellular phones, but also many new types of communication systems such as broadband wireless access systems, millimeter-wave LAN. intelligent transport systems (ITS) and high altitude stratospheric platform station (HAPS) systems. The key words in the future generations of mobile communications are "multimedia communications" "wireless access to broadband fixed networks" and "seamless roaming among different systems' This article discusses the future generations mobile communication systems.

For example, a network comprising a set of hosts and routers in a train can be a mobile network. While the mobile network is moving, a router in the network changes its point of connection to the Internet. This paper proposes an architecture and Mobile IPv6 extensions that support packet routing for mobile networks. The proposed scheme enables any host on a mobile network to communicate with any host connected to the Internet.

However, diversity performance in fast fading environments is insufficient. This paper proposes a novel predictive antenna selection diversity scheme, PASD, which improves the diversity performance for higher fading rates. In PASD, received signal power for the assigned data slot is predicted from previously measured data. Thus, selection errors due to the receiving power changes caused by fast Rayleigh fading can be effectively avoided. An experimental result for a 3-ch TDMA system with a frame duration of 20 ms shows that the diversity gain was increased by 1.3 dB over the conventional method for a fading rate of 40 Hz. PASD is also shown to have improved diversity performance against cochannel interference.

    NTT REVIEW, NTT CORP, 4, 1, 64-69, Jan. 1992, In order to develop a digital mobile radio unit it is necessary to achieve highly precise and efficient pi/4 shifted QPSK transmission in a TDMA burst RF channel. This paper discusses the configuration of a digital mobile radio and explain the prerequisite conditions for its various sub-systems. Next, as new fundamental element in the mobile radio technologies, we propose an RF quadrature modulator, adaptive carrier tracking demodulator, linearized saturation amplifier with bi-directional feed control, as well as a digital loop preset synthesizer. Also, the configuration of each of the above and their superior features are demonstrated. In addition, the efficacy of these basic sub-system technologies in designing compact and low power consumption mobile radio units is shown.

Design and performance of a quadrature type GMSK modulator and a single-chip coherent demodulator as the GMSK modem are described. To overcome slow fading, encountered in portable applications, switching diversity using a jitter detection type sensor is proposed and shown to be effective.   • Development for 4th generation mobile communications

    The great success of the i-mode service shows that data communication services are becoming accepted in the mobile communication world. Multimedia mobile communication services will be provided by 3rd generation IMT-2000 systems next year in Japan. Thus, the time has come to begin the research and development for 4th generation (4G) mobile communication systems. There exist many difficult issues for 4G systems, such as frequency resources, additional investment, higher speed wireless transmission technology and so on. Furthermore, a new concept must be discussed for 4G before solving these issues. This paper briefly presents current conditions of cellular systems and the development of IMT-2000 in Japan. The concept and problems of the 4G system are then described along with new technologies that will be useful in solving technical problems. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley &

  • The future generations of mobile communications based on broadband access technologies

    The forthcoming mobile communication systems are expected to provide a wide variety of services, from high-quality voice to high-definition videos, through high-data-rate wireless channels anywhere in the world. The high data rate requires broad frequency bands, and sufficient broadband can be achieved in higher frequency bands such as microwave, Ka-band, and millimeter-wave. Broadband wireless channels have to be connected to broadband fixed networks such as the Internet and local area networks. The future-generation systems will include not only cellular phones, but also many new types of communication systems such as broadband wireless access systems, millimeter-wave LANs, intelligent transport systems, and high altitude stratospheric platform station systems. Key to the future generations of mobile communications are multimedia communications, wireless access to broad-band fixed networks, and seamless roaming among different systems.
