  • Analysis of window-censored repair logs and its application to maintenance
Watalu Yamamoto; Lu Jin; Kazuyuki Suzuki
Theory and Practice of Quality and Reliability Engineering in Asia Industry, Springer Singapore, 291-300, 01 Jan. 2017, Peer-reviwed, When tailor-made systems are introduced into fields, markets, or factories, the replacement parts or subcomponents for maintenance are produced and purchased simultaneously so as to keep the quality and reliability of those parts homogeneous against the parts installed into systems at the beginning. Those parts are then kept in stock at yards and will be kept waiting for their turns. Furthermore, the maintenance records of such systems are often window censored, under which the records are both left and right censored. In this talk, we model such situations as a renewal process with incomplete repairs, in which a failed subcomponent is replaced with an unused-but-not-new subcomponent. The statistical inference of the failure time distribution and the effect of in-stock term are implemented using stochastic EM algorithm, which is needed to solve the maximization problem of the incomplete data likelihood under window censoring. A real case is analyzed using the proposed model and the effect of in-stock-at-yards term on the total lifetime is assessed by assuming Weibull distribution. We also examine the sampling properties of the estimators for Weibull distributions.

  • Adaptive Age Replacement Using On-Line Monitoring
    Lu Jin; Watalu Yamamoto
13TH GLOBAL CONGRESS ON MANUFACTURING AND MANAGEMENT, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 174, 117-125, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Age replacement is one of the most used maintenance policies based on preventive action in order to prevent the failure of a system. Age replacement means that a system is replaced at failure or at a specified replacement age, whichever occurs first. In current age replacement policies, the replacement age is identified without consideration of the effects from operating conditions. However, the lifetime of a system may be affected by various operating conditions, such as the surrounding environment and the operators. In such cases, the replacement age of the system should differ for different situations. Thanks to the improvement of information communication technology, various information about the systems operating conditions can be obtained via the on-line monitoring. This research proposed an adaptive age replacement policy for systems under variable operating conditions using a cumulative exposure model. Based on the on-line information, we proposed a new time-scale instead of the age with consideration of operating conditions. Next, the new time-scale is used to determine the optimal replacement interval which will minimize the average maintenance cost per unit time (also known as cost rate). Some numerical examples are carried out in order to illustrate the proposed adaptive age replacement policy. The optimal age replacement policy considering the operating conditions reduces the total maintenance costs and enhances the effective maintenance plan for systems operating under various conditions. • Optimal control limit policy for age-dependent deteriorating systems under incomplete observations
Lu Jin; Undarmaa Bayarsaikhan; Kazuyuki Suzuki
PROCEEDINGS OF THE INSTITUTION OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS PART O-JOURNAL OF RISK AND RELIABILITY, SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 230, 1, 34-43, Feb. 2016, Peer-reviwed, The focus of this study is the optimal decision making problem for an age-dependent deteriorating system in which the deterioration unfolds as a non-stationary Markov process. The true deterioration state of the system cannot be known directly and is assumed to be observed incompletely by a monitor that provides information related to the true deterioration state stochastically. The optimal decision making problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process. The optimal maintenance policy is investigated and the structural properties of the resulting optimal expected cost function are obtained. These structural properties establish the existence of an optimal control limit policy with respect to both the deterioration information vector and the age of the system under intuitively meaningful assumptions. The monotonic property of the control limits is also clarified.

  • Optimal decision procedure for an operation-dependent deteriorating system
    Lu Jin
APPLIED STOCHASTIC MODELS IN BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY, WILEY-BLACKWELL, 31, 3, 394-404, May 2015, Peer-reviwed, Highly flexible and integrated systems can perform one of several operations at a time, which allows the decision-maker to select which operation to perform in the safest and most effective way. There are strong dynamic interactions between a system's deterioration and the operations it performs. In this research, optimal decision-making was investigated for operation-dependent deteriorating systems under variable operations while formulating the problem as a Markov decision process with the operation as a parameter. The decision-maker selects the operation that will minimize the total expected cost over an infinite horizon on the basis of the current state. The properties of the resulting optimal expected cost function were examined, and the optimal decision procedure was found to be given by a monotone procedure under certain conditions. This research provides a generalization of the keep, inspection, and replacement' problem that was initially introduced by Derman (Mathematical Optimization Techniques: 201-210, 1963) and has been studied extensively since then. • Optimal Maintenance Policy for Aging Systems Under Non-stationary Markov Deterioration
    Jin, L
Journal of the Japanese Society for Quality Control, The Japanese Society for Quality Control, 45, 4, 65-73, 2015, Peer-reviwed, In most previous studies of maintenance decision-making, systems were assumed to deteriorate in accordance with a stationary state transition law. However, the deterioration of a system sometimes depends on its age (calendar time, total operating time, etc). In this research, optimal maintenance decision-making was investigated for systems with age-dependent deterioration. The problem was formulated as a non-stationary Markov decision process. The properties of the optimal expected cost function were examined, and the optimal maintenance decision-making policy was found to be given by a two-dimensional control limit policy with respect to both the system's deterioration state and age under certain conditions. A numerical example of a power transformer demonstrated that a control limit policy that takes both state and age into consideration is optimal for this system and is also better than the existing maintenance guideline. Such an age-dependent maintenance policy supports the implementation of a system-specific maintenance plan.

  • Optimal Maintenance Policy For Partially Observable Markovian Deteriorating System Subject To A Restorable Varying Environment
    Jin, L. Miyawaki, K; Suzuki, K
Journal of Reliability Engineering Association of Japan, Reliability Engineering Association of Japan (REAJ), 35, 3, 177-187, Jun. 2013, Peer-reviwed, An optimal maintenance problem is investigated for a system that deteriorates under the influence of a resettable varying environment. Since the internal true state of the system cannot be observed directly, the decision maker needs to determine the action that will minimize the discounted total expected cost over an infinite horizon by inferring the system's exact state on the basis of the available information, such as the current environment condition, the monitors' observations, and the observed system history. This procedure is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) with the environment as a parameter. The structural properties of the optimal maintenance policy is studied, and a sufficient condition that ensures the optimality of the control limit policy with respect to the system's prior probability and its environment is identified.

  • Control Limit Policy for Partially Observable Markov Decision Process Based on Stochastic Increasing Ordering
Lu Jin; Kazuhiro Kumagai; Kazuyuki Suzuki
QUALITY TECHNOLOGY AND QUANTITATIVE MANAGEMENT, NCTU-NATIONAL CHIAO TUNG UNIV PRESS, 8, 4, 479-493, Dec. 2011, Peer-reviwed, We investigated an optimal maintenance problem for a condition monitoring system that is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process. In almost all previous research, the optimal control limit policy with respect to totally positive of order 2 (TP2) ordering of the state probability vectors was derived using the property of posterior probability. We call this approach "Approach PP." Attempts to achieve an optimal control limit policy based on stochastic increasing (SI) ordering, which is weaker than TP2 ordering, ran into a difficulty. That is, the SI property of the posterior probability vectors could not be obtained, and this property is needed to derive results expected using Approach PP. We investigated the conditions for the SI property of posterior probability vectors and derived a necessary and sufficient condition that cannot be further relaxed when we try to derive an optimal control limit policy based on SI ordering using Approach PP. This condition is that the conditional probability matrix of the monitor observation given the state of the system is given as Type 1), the probabilities of the same monitoring output are the same whatever the true state, or Type 2), an identity matrix. Type 1) means that the monitoring output is independent of the true state.

  • Necessary and Sufficient Condition for Control Limit Policy on Partially Observable Markov Decision Process

Journal of the Japanese Society for Quality Control, The Japanese Society for Quality Control, 42, 2, 238-249, 2011, Online monitoring of the condition of products anywhere in the world has become possible with recent advances in information technology. This enables manufacturers to provide appropriate and effective maintenance service to each customer by using information specific to each product, such as degradation and usage. The investigation of the optimal maintenance policy has thus become important. This research investigated the optimal maintenance policy for a multi-state deteriorated system under the assumption that the system is monitored incompletely by a monitor that gives information related to the true state of the system. The problem was formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). Derman investigated the optimal maintenance problem for a system with complete observations and showed that a state transition probability matrix with the stochastic increasing (SI) property is a sufficient condition for the optimal policy to be given by a control limit policy. Complete observations means that the monitor shows the true internal state of the system; that is, the conditional probability matrix, which describes the relationship between the monitor's output and the internal state of the system, is an identity matrix, which is a special case of the POMDP model. Investigation of the optimal maintenance problem with incomplete observations when the transition probability matrix has the SI property showed that the optimal procedure is given by a control limit policy if and only if the conditional probability matrix is given by (i) an identity matrix or (ii) a matrix in which the probabilities of the same monitoring output are the same whatever the true state. This research brings to a close over have a century of research on ways to extend the optimal control limit policy on the basis of SI ordering of the state probability vectors.

  • Optimal allocations for load-sharing k-out-of-n:F systems

JOURNAL OF STATISTICAL PLANNING AND INFERENCE, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 139, 5, 1777-1781, May 2009, Peer-reviwed, We develop an optimal load allocation for load-sharing k-out-of-n:F systems with piecewise linear degradation models. The components are assumed non-repairable,and they are removed from the system as soon as they fail. It is shown that the lifetime of a system is maximized by allocating the load on a system to its components according to component residual lifetimes. The same allocation can be applied to the systems in which the lifetime distributions of components are known and also in which the lifetime distributions belong to a scale family, by assuming an accelerated lifetime model and the Cumulative damage rule. • Optimality of k-out-of-n Structures for Condition Monitoring Maintenance Using Dependent Information
    L. Jin; Y. Horikoshi; K. Suzuki
QUALITY TECHNOLOGY AND QUANTITATIVE MANAGEMENT, NCTU-NATIONAL CHIAO TUNG UNIV PRESS, 6, 1, 23-32, Mar. 2009, A maintenance monitoring system is considered that is subject to two types of contradictory failures, "false alarm" and "failure to alarm". It is shown that, for a monitoring system with dependent observations, the optimal decision procedure is given by a k-out-of-n structure under a weaker condition than that used in previous research. The condition is that the ratios of the same size elements of the conditional probabilities for the observational matrix of the monitors given the true state of the observed system are the same besides the probability matrix having a weak-MLR (weak-multivariate monotone likelihood ratio) property. If the optimal procedure is given by a k-out-of-n structure, the amount of calculation time needed to identify an optimal decision procedure can be greatly reduced. This enables an optimal action to be found quickly.

  • An optimal policy for partially observable Markov decision processes with non-independent monitors
Lu Jin; Tomoaki Mashita; Kazuyuki Suzuki
Journal of Quality in Maintenance Engineering, 11, 3, 228-238, 2005, Peer-reviwed, Purpose - This research investigated the optimal structure of a discrete-time Markov deterioration system monitored by multiple non-independent monitors. The purpose is to obtain a sufficient condition with which the optimal policy is given by a control limit policy. Design/methodology/approach - The model of this research is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process. The problem is to obtain an optimal policy which can minimize the expected total discounted cost over an infinite horizon. Findings - The research found that the expected optimal cost function over an infinite horizon has a property of control limit policy given the conditions that a transition probability having a property of totally positive of order 2 and a conditional probability of the monitors having a property of weak multivariate monotone likelihood ratio. Furthermore, we showed that the optimal policy has only four action regions at most. Practical implications - If the optimum policy can be limited to a control limit policy, the tremendous amount of calculation time required to find the optimum procedure can be reduced. This enables the best decision to be identified in a much shorter period of time. Originality/value - A deterioration system monitored incompletely by one monitor has been studied in the previous research. This research considered the case of a multiple number monitors whose observations were not independent. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • Optimal maintenance policy for non-stationary deteriorating systems subject to varying factors
    JIN LU
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Principal investigator, This project investigates the optimal maintenance decision-making problem for deteriorating systems operating in a variable environment with selectable operations. Since there are strong dynamic interactions among a deteriorating system, its surrounding environment, and the operation being executed, this project formulates the optimal decision-making problem for this system as a non-stationary Markov decision process. The structural properties of the resulting optimal expected cost function are examined, and the optimal maintenance policy is found to be given by a control limit policy under certain conditions. Based on the obtained control limit structure, an algorithm is provided for searching the optimal maintenance policy for a deterioration system under a varying environment. Such maintenance policy enhances the dynamic decision-making process for deteriorating systems operating in a variable environment, and supports the implementation of a system-specific maintenance plan., 25750121

  • Optimal Procedure for Condition Monitoring Maintenance
    JIN Lu
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Principal investigator, This research investigated an optimal maintenance problem with incomplete observations and showed that, when the transition probability matrix (P) has the stochastic increasing (SI) property, the optimal procedure is given by a monotone procedure if and only if the conditional probability matrix (Γ) is given by an identity matrix. This research brings to a close over 50 years of research on ways to extend the optimality of monotone procedure on the basis of SI ordering of the state probability vectors. Furthermore, this research studied the optimal structure identification problem for a monitoring system with multiple sensors and identified a necessary and sufficient condition under which a k-out-of-n structure is optimal in terms of minimizing the expected risk. This means that, fewer structures need to be considered when searching for the optimal one., 19710125

  • Acquisition, Sharing and Utilization of Information for Preventing Quality and Safety Problems
SUZUKI Kazuyuki; TANAKA Kenji; YAMAMOTO Wataru; JIN Lu
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Coinvestigator, Results are summarized into the following four categories: 1. System for Prevention of Quality and Safety Problems and Their Organization and Management Factors To prevent quality and reliability problems, a system which consists of seven steps is proposed and the importance of the following organizational and management factors is discussed : (1) Quality FLEA, Customer First Principle, (2) Culture which Can Open Problems, (3) Adaptation for Change, (4) Information Sharing and Communication, (5) Confidence on Each Member, (6) Ethics, Engineering and Education, (7) CSR Consciousness. 2. Accumulation of Stress-Failure mechanism-Failure modes and its information sharing If one cannot predict a risk in future, one cannot prevent it. Therefore, prevention based on prediction is important From this point of view, the method of prediction is discussed focusing on stress-failure mechanism-failure modes. 3. Fail-safe and Error Proof for Prevention of Problems Even for long-time experienced products in the market such as gas stoves, oil fan heaters, etc., they have to operate safely. In this case, fail safe design which fails safely when it fails must be applied. This method is discussed. Also, it is impossible to eliminate human errors completely. For this, error proof technique is a key. Focusing on information processing of human, systematic error proof methods are proposed. 4. Investigation of Condition Monitoring Maintenance with Information Technology Condition monitoring maintenance plays an important role in preventing the failures of huge and complex systems. This research investigated an optimal policy for a condition monitoring system which comprises multiple sensors, and derived a necessary and sufficient condition under which an optimal procedure is given by a monotone procedure for both cases of independent and depend observations. This condition is given by the conditional probability matrix, which describes the relationship of sensors' observations and system's true state, having a property of Totally Positive of order 2 (TP_2)/ Weak Multivariate Likelihood Ratio (Weak-MLR) property for the case of independent/dependent observation., 17510118
