Healthcare, MDPI AG, 12, 3, 322-322, 26 Jan. 2024, Peer-reviwed, Promoting subjective well-being is a crucial challenge in aging societies. In 2022, we launched a community-based intervention trial (the Chofu-Digital-Choju Movement). This initiative centered on fostering in-person and online social connections to enhance the subjective well-being of older adults. This paper describes the study design and baseline survey. This quasi-experimental study involved community-dwelling older adults aged 65–84 years in Chofu City, Tokyo, Japan. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 3742 residents (1681 men and 2061 women), and a baseline survey was conducted in January 2022. We assessed subjective well-being (primary outcome); psychosocial, physical, and dietary factors; and the use of information and communication technology variables (secondary outcomes) among the participants. After the intervention involving online classes, community hubs, and community events, a 2-year follow-up survey will be conducted to evaluate the effects of the intervention, comparing the intervention group (participants) with the control group (non-participants). We received 2503 questionnaires (66.9% response rate); of these, the analysis included 2343 questionnaires (62.6% valid response rate; mean age, 74.4 (standard deviation, 5.4) years; 43.7% male). The mean subjective well-being score was 7.2 (standard deviation, 1.9). This study will contribute to the development of a prototype subjective well-being strategy for older adults.

  • Japanese Sound-Symbolic Words for Representing the Hardness of an Object Are Judged Similarly by Japanese and English Speakers
Li Shan Wong; Jinhwan Kwon; Zane Zheng; Suzy J. Styles; Maki Sakamoto; Ryo Kitada
Frontiers in Psychology, Frontiers Media {SA}, 13, 15 Mar. 2022, Peer-reviwed, Contrary to the assumption of arbitrariness in modern linguistics, sound symbolism, which is the non-arbitrary relationship between sounds and meanings, exists. Sound symbolism, including the “Bouba–Kiki” effect, implies the universality of such relationships; individuals from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds can similarly relate sound-symbolic words to referents, although the extent of these similarities remains to be fully understood. Here, we examined if subjects from different countries could similarly infer the surface texture properties from words that sound-symbolically represent hardness in Japanese. We prepared Japanese sound-symbolic words of which novelty was manipulated by a genetic algorithm (GA). Japanese speakers in Japan and English speakers in both Singapore and the United States rated these words based on surface texture properties (hardness, warmness, and roughness), as well as familiarity. The results show that hardness-related words were rated as harder and rougher than softness-related words, regardless of novelty and countries. Multivariate analyses of the ratings classified the hardness-related words along the hardness-softness dimension at over 80% accuracy, regardless of country. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the number of speech sounds /g/ and /k/ predicted the ratings of the surface texture properties in non-Japanese countries, suggesting a systematic relationship between phonetic features of a word and perceptual quality represented by the word across culturally and linguistically diverse samples.

Scientific Reports, Springer Nature, 11, 7399, 1-13, 01 Apr. 2021, Peer-reviwed, Unlike the assumption of modern linguistics, there is non-arbitrary association between sound and meaning in sound symbolic words. Neuroimaging studies have suggested the unique contribution of the superior temporal sulcus to the processing of sound symbolism. However, because these findings are limited to the mapping between sound symbolism and visually presented objects, the processing of sound symbolic information may also involve the sensory-modality dependent mechanisms. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment to test whether the brain regions engaged in the tactile processing of object properties are also involved in mapping sound symbolic information with tactually perceived object properties. Thirty-two healthy subjects conducted a matching task in which they judged the congruency between softness perceived by touch and softness associated with sound symbolic words. Congruency effect was observed in the orbitofrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, insula, medial superior frontal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, and cerebellum. This effect in the insula and medial superior frontal gyri was overlapped with softness-related activity that was separately measured in the same subjects in the tactile experiment. These results indicate that the insula and medial superior frontal gyrus play a role in processing sound symbolic information and relating it to the tactile softness information.

Journal of neuroscience methods, Elsevier, 327, 108393-108393, 01 Nov. 2019, Peer-reviwed, True, BACKGROUND: Tactile stimulation used to induce emotional responses is often not well-controlled. Replicating the same tactile stimulations across studies is difficult, compared to replicating visual and auditory modalities, which have standardized stimulus sets. Standardizing a stimulation method by replicating stimuli across studies is necessary to further elucidate emotional responses in neuroscience research using tactile stimulation. THE NEW METHOD: We developed a tactile stimulation device. The device's ultrasonic motor and optical force sensor have the following criteria: (1) controls the physical property of stimuli, pressure, and stroking speed; (2) measures actual touch timing; (3) is safe to use in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner; and (4) produces low noise in electroencephalography (EEG) and MRI. RESULTS: The noise level of the device's drive was sufficiently low. For the EEG experiment, we successfully used signal processing to diminish the commercial power supply noise. For functional MRI (fMRI) scans, we found <5% signal loss occurred during device rotation. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): We found no previous report about the noise level of a tactile stimulation device used to induce emotional responses during EEG and fMRI recordings. The signal loss rate was comparable with that of other robotic devices used in MRI scanners. Emotional feelings induced by this stimulation method were comparable with those elicited in other sensory modalities. CONCLUSIONS: The developed device could be used for cognitive-affective neuroscience research when conducting EEG and fMRI scans. The device should aid in standardizing affective tactile stimulation for research in psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

Neuroimage, 197, 156-166, Aug. 2019, Peer-reviwed, True, Humans are adept at perceiving physical properties of an object through touch. Tangible object properties can be categorized into two types: macro-spatial properties, including shape and orientation; and material properties, such as roughness, softness, and temperature. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that roughness and temperature are extracted at nodes of a network, such as that involving the parietal operculum and insula, which is different from the network engaged in processing macro-spatial properties. However, it is unclear whether other perceptual dimensions pertaining to material properties engage the same regions. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study to test whether the parietal operculum and insula were involved in extracting tactually-perceived softness magnitude. Fifty-six healthy right-handed participants estimated perceived softness magnitude using their right middle finger. We presented three stimuli that had the same shape but different compliances. The force applied to the finger was manipulated at two levels. Classical mass-univariate analysis showed that activity in the parietal operculum, insula, and medial prefrontal cortex was positively associated with perceived softness magnitude, regardless of the applied force. Softness-related activity was stronger in the ventral striatum in the high-force condition than in the low-force condition. The multivariate voxel pattern analysis showed higher accuracy than chance levels and control regions in the parietal operculum/insula, postcentral gyrus, posterior parietal lobule, and middle occipital gyrus. These results indicate that a distributed set of the brain regions, including the parietal operculum and insula, is involved in representing perceived softness.

Royal Society Open Science, The Royal Society Publishing, 6, 190039, 190039-190039, 10 Jul. 2019, Peer-reviwed, True, Shittori feel is defined as a texture that is moderately moisturized; however, many people experience 'shittori feel' when they touch a dry solid material containing little liquid. Here, shittori feel was evaluated for 12 materials. We found that the highest score of shittori feel was achieved by powders. Multiple regression analysis showed that shittori feel is a complex sense of moist and smooth feels. We analysed the relationship between the physical properties and the moist/smooth feels to show how subjects felt certain feels simultaneously. The moist and smooth feels are related to the surface roughness and friction characteristics of the materials. The moist and smooth feels can be perceived when the finger starts to move on the material surface and when the finger moves and rubs the material surface, respectively.

  • Optimal linguistic expression in negotiations depends on visual appearance
Maki Sakamoto; Jinhwan Kwon; Hikaru Tamada; Yumi Hirahara
PLoS ONE, Public Library of Science, 13, 4, 1-15, 01 Apr. 2018, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the influence of the visual appearance of a negotiator on persuasiveness within the context of negotiations. Psychological experiments were conducted to quantitatively analyze the relationship between visual appearance and the use of language. Male and female participants were shown three female and male photographs, respectively. They were asked to report how they felt about each photograph using a seven-point semantic differential (SD) scale for six affective factors (positive impression, extraversion, intelligence, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and agreeableness). Participants then answered how they felt about each negotiation scenario (they were presented with pictures and a situation combined with negotiation sentences) using a seven-point SD scale for seven affective factors (positive impression, extraversion, intelligence, conscientiousness, emotional stability, agreeableness, and degree of persuasion). Two experiments were conducted using different participant groups depending on the negotiation situations. Photographs with good or bad appearances were found to show high or low degrees of persuasion, respectively. A multiple regression equation was obtained, indicating the importance of the three language factors (euphemistic, honorific, and sympathy expressions) to impressions made during negotiation. The result shows that there are optimal negotiation sentences based on various negotiation factors, such as visual appearance and use of language. For example, persons with good appearance might worsen their impression during negotiations by using certain language, although their initial impression was positive, and persons with bad appearance could effectively improve their impressions in negotiations through their use of language, although the final impressions of their negotiation counterpart might still be more negative than those for persons with good appearance. In contrast, the impressions made by persons of normal appearance were not easily affected by their use of language. The results of the present study have significant implications for future studies of effective negotiation strategies considering visual appearance as well as gender.

  • Bouba/Kiki in touch: Associations between tactile perceptual qualities and Japanese phonemes
    Maki Sakamoto; Junji Watanabe
Frontiers in Psychology, Frontiers Media S.A., 9, 1-12, 12 Mar. 2018, Peer-reviwed, Several studies have shown cross-modal associations between sounds and vision or gustation by asking participants to match pre-defined sound-symbolic words (SSWs), such as "bouba" or "kiki," with visual or gustatory materials. Here, we conducted an explorative study on cross-modal associations of tactile sensations using spontaneous production of Japanese SSWs and semantic ratings. The Japanese language was selected, because it has a large number of SSWs that can represent a wide range of tactile perceptual spaces with fine resolution, and it shows strong associations between sound and touch. In the experiment, we used 120 everyday materials to cover basic material categories that could be associated with fundamental dimensions of tactile perception. Upon contact with these materials, participants expressed their tactile sensations by using Japanese SSWs, and at the same time, evaluated the tactile sensations by semantic differential scales using adjective pairs. Thanks to the variety of testing materials, we were able to demonstrate the existence of systematic associations between sounds and tactile fundamental perceptual dimensions in a more detailed and comprehensive way than ever done so before. In particular, we found that for vowels, positive tactile ratings were associated with the back vowel (/u/), while negative ratings were associated with the front vowels (/i/ and /e/). The central vowels (/o/ and /a/) were mainly associated with rough, hard, and dry feelings. Consonants were categorized based on vocal features and articulation. The category of the voiced consonants (e.g., /dz/ and /g/) corresponded to feelings of roughness, while that of voiceless consonants (e.g., /ts/, and /s/) corresponded to feelings of smoothness. The categories of the bilabial plosive (/p/ and /b/) and voiced alveolar nasal (/n/) consonants were mainly related to soft, sticky and wet feelings, while that of voiceless alveolar affricate (/ts/) and voiceless velar plosive (/k/) consonants were related to hard, slippery and dry feelings.

  • Exploring Tactile Perceptual Dimensions Using Materials Associated with Sensory Vocabulary
    Maki Sakamoto; Junji Watanabe
FRONTIERS IN PSYCHOLOGY, FRONTIERS MEDIA SA, 8, 1-10, Apr. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Considering tactile sensation when designing products is important because the decision to purchase often depends on how products feel. Numerous psychophysical studies have attempted to identify important factors that describe tactile perceptions. However, the numbers and types of major tactile dimensions reported in previous studies have varied because of differences in materials used across experiments. To obtain a more complete picture of perceptual space with regard to touch, our study focuses on using vocabulary that expresses tactile sensations as a guiding principle for collecting material samples because these types of words are expected to cover all the basic categories within tactile perceptual space. We collected 120 materials based on a variety of Japanese sound-symbolic words for tactile sensations, and used the materials to examine tactile perceptual dimensions and their associations with affective evaluations. Analysis revealed sixmajor dimensions: "Affective evaluation and Friction," "Compliance," "Surface," "Volume," "Temperature," and "Naturalness." These dimensions include four factors that previous studies have regarded as fundamental, as well as two new factors: "Volume" and "Naturalness."Additionally, we showed that " Affective evaluation" is more closely related to the " Friction" component (slipperiness and dryness) than to other tactile perceptual features. Our study demonstrates that using vocabulary could be an effective method for selecting material samples to explore tactile perceptual space.

  • Automatic Estimation of Multidimensional Ratings from a Single Sound-Symbolic Word and Word-Based Visualization of Tactile Perceptual Space
Ryuichi Doizaki; Junji Watanabe; Maki Sakamoto
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON HAPTICS, IEEE COMPUTER SOC, 10, 2, 173-182, Apr. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Several pairs of Japanese adjective words pertaining to material's properties, such as roughness and hardness, have been used in Japanese studies to quantitatively evaluate variations in tactile sensations. This method asks observers to analyze their perceptual experiences one by one. An alternative notion is that human perceptual recognition is performed as a whole rather than by using fragmented factors. Based on this notion, we propose a system that can automatically estimate multidimensional ratings of touch from a single sound-symbolic word that has been spontaneously and intuitively expressed by a user. When a user inputs a sound-symbolic word into the system, the system refers to a database of phonemes and their auditory impressions, and calculates ratings in terms of 26 pairs of fundamental scales of touch. The estimated ratings of sound-symbolic words enable us to visualize a tactile perceptual space. Our study provides an alternative method for estimating the fine quality of tactile sensations.

Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, Springer Verlag, 483, 221-230, 2017, Peer-reviwed, In this study, we investigate the influence of Kawaii appearance on persuasiveness within the context of a negotiation, and propose a support system for advising women on their negotiation approach—with a focus on the negotiator’s Kawaii appearance. As a result of this experiment, we were able to obtain the multiple regression equation indicating the importance of the three language factors (euphemistic, honorific and sympathy expressions) for impressions made during negotiations. Based on this multiple regression equation, we constructed a system which automatically suggests negotiation sentences appropriate for creating a certain desired impression. Our system is expected to be able to recommend the optimal negotiation sentences based on the user’s personal and situational factors (such as Kawaii appearance, use of language, age, and relationship to the negotiation counterpart).

  • Visualization of Relation between Sound Symbolic Word and Perceptual Characteristics of Environmental Sounds
    J. Kwon; M. Sakamoto
IRAGO CONFERENCE 2016: 360 DEGREE OUTLOOK ON CRITICAL SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL CHALLENGES FOR A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY, AMER INST PHYSICS, 1807, 1-6, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Humans interact with environmental sounds by easily and quickly identifying external and natural sounds in daily life. Interestingly, we verbalize the perceived auditory information from environmental sound. Onomatopoeia, i.e. sound symbolic word, indicates the linguistic form deeply related to environmental sound. The objective of this study is to visualize the relationship between perceptual properties of onomatopoeia and affective characteristics ("pleasant unpleasant") perceived from the environmental sound. We have mapped the correlation between perceptual properties by phonemes of onomatopoeia and "pleasant/unpleasant" evaluations of environmental sound. The results showed that many onomatopoeias are related to various perceptual and affective scales. We suggest the importance of relation between the perceptual characteristics in auditory sensation and the phonological properties of sound symbolic words.

Many people prefer products made with natural rather than artificial materials, and favor luxury products with high social value. In this study, we examined whether similarities and differences between "naturalness" and "luxuriousness" manifested in the onomatopoeic expressions used in texture evaluation. We used pearls and gold leaf, which have different market values depending on grade. Participants were asked to visually evaluate the "naturalness" and "luxuriousness" of these items through a semantic differential technique and onomatopoeic expressions. We found that it was difficult for non-experts to distinguish which item actually had the highest value, but there was a positive correlation between "naturalness" and "luxuriousness" perceptions. Regarding the onomatopoeia results, when a material was perceived as artificial, participants described its texture with visual onomatopoeia. However, when the material was perceived as natural, tactile as well as visual onomatopoeias were used to describe texture. Based on these results, we suggest that knowledge based on of tactile experience may have influenced the visual perception of "naturalness" and "luxuriousness."

  • Cross-Modal Associations between Sounds and Drink Tastes/Textures: A Study with Spontaneous Production of Sound-Symbolic Words
    Maki Sakamoto; Junji Watanabe
CHEMICAL SENSES, OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 41, 3, 197-203, Mar. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Many languages have a word class whose speech sounds are linked to sensory experiences. Several recent studies have demonstrated cross-modal associations (or correspondences) between sounds and gustatory sensations by asking participants to match predefined sound-symbolic words (e.g., "maluma/takete") with the taste/texture of foods. Here, we further explore cross-modal associations using the spontaneous production of words and semantic ratings of sensations. In the experiment, after drinking liquids, participants were asked to express their taste/texture using Japanese sound-symbolic words, and at the same time, to evaluate it in terms of criteria expressed by adjectives. Because the Japanese language has a large vocabulary of sound-symbolic words, and Japanese people frequently use them to describe taste/texture, analyzing a variety of Japanese sound-symbolic words spontaneously produced to express taste/textures might enable us to explore the mechanism of taste/texture categorization. A hierarchical cluster analysis based on the relationship between linguistic sounds and taste/texture evaluations revealed the structure of sensation categories. The results indicate that an emotional evaluation like pleasant/unpleasant is the primary cluster in gustation.

International Journal of Design Creativity and Innovation, Taylor and Francis Ltd., 4, 3-4, 181-194, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Many products such as electronic appliances are made of imitation metals, which are lighter in weight and lower in cost than real metals. However, imitation metals sometimes look and feel cheap. This study proposes that differences in sound symbolic words associated with imitation and real metals can be used in metal texture design to make imitation materials look and feel like real materials. Japanese is known to have a large number of sound symbolic words, or “onomatopoeia,” for expressing textures. For example, onomatopoeia expressing a sense of smoothness often uses the consonant /s/ in the first syllable as in “sara-sara.” We conducted psychological experiments where participants were asked to observe a pair of imitation and real materials without touching them and respond with onomatopoeic words that they felt were associated with them. Participants used significantly more onomatopoeic words for real materials than for imitation materials. Furthermore, we analyzed onomatopoeia obtained for both real metals and imitation metals using a system that quantifies the phonological information of onomatopoeia. The comparison of the onomatopoeia evoked by real metals and those evoked by imitation metals revealed differences in their texture feelings.

International Journal of Affective Engineering, Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, 15, 2, 37-43, 08 Dec. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Smooth communication between doctors and patients during medical interviews is regarded as a very significant part of successful medical practice. To improve the quality of medical interviews, it is important that doctors correctly grasp the pain symptoms and medical conditions of their patients. However, it is often difficult for doctors to measure the quality of pain symptoms based solely on the verbal expressions patients use because pain is a highly subjective experience. In medical interviews, Japanese patients frequently use onomatopoeia such as "kiri-kiri" or "gaN-gaN" to express their pain symptoms and medical conditions. Doctors try to grasp patients' conditions by using metaphors corresponding to the onomatopoeia being expressed. In our study, therefore, we focused on the relationship between onomatopoeia and metaphors, and developed a system which automatically proposes metaphors corresponding to the onomatopoeia inputted by users. Our system is expected to add support to medical practice interviews.

  • Discourse Goals Affect the Process and Product of Nominal Metaphor Production
    Akira Utsumi; Maki Sakamoto
JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLINGUISTIC RESEARCH, SPRINGER/PLENUM PUBLISHERS, 44, 5, 555-569, Oct. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Although a large number of studies have addressed metaphor comprehension, only a few attempts have so far been made at exploring the process of metaphor production. Therefore, in this paper, we address the problem of how people generate nominal metaphors or identify an apt vehicle for a given topic of nominal metaphors. Specifically, we examine how the process and product of metaphor production differ between two discourse goals of metaphor, namely an explanatory purpose (e.g., to clarify) and a literary purpose (e.g., to aesthetically pleasing). Experiment 1 analyzed the metaphors (or vehicles) generated in the metaphor production task, and demonstrated that people identified more prototypical exemplars of the property to be attributed to the topic as a vehicle for explanatory metaphors than for literary metaphors. In addition, it was found that metaphors generated for the explanatory purpose were more apt and conventional, and had high topic-vehicle similarity than those generated for the literary purpose, while metaphors generated for the literary purpose were more familiar and imageable than those for the explanatory purpose. Experiment 2 used a priming paradigm to assess the online availability of prototypical and less prototypical members of the topic property during metaphor production. The result was that both prototypical and less prototypical members were activated in producing literary metaphors, while neither members were activated in the production of explanatory metaphors. These findings indicate that the process of metaphor production is affected by discourse goals of metaphor; less prototypical members of the category are searched for a vehicle during the production of literary metaphors, and thus literary metaphors are generated with less prototypical vehicles than explanatory metaphors.

Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 30, 1, 237-245, 06 Jan. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We feel some liquids such as honey or oil more viscous than others like water. Viscosity perception is frequently expressed by onomatopoeia, a set of words that are often used to express sensory experiences in Japanese. For example, we would say honey is“toro-toro”or oil is“doro-doro”. In this paper we investigated the associations between phonemes of Japanese onomatopoeia for expressing viscosity and subjective evaluations of viscosity. Specifically, we performed psychological experiments where participants watched some static images and dynamic images. Participants were asked to express the visual sensations by onomatopoeia and rate the degree to which they felt the objects viscous. This experiment was aimed at specifying the systematic association between phonemes of Japanese onomatopoeic words and viscous evaluations. Our results showed the existence of some associations between the phonemes of the words for expressing the sensation and the evaluations of viscosity and showed the possibility to construct a system to recommend viscosity animations by onomatopoeia. The system proposed in this paper recommends viscosity animations consistent with onomatopoetic expressions based on Japanese sound symbolism. Our system comprises a user interface module, an onomatopoeia parsing module, and a database. Our system can evaluate the subtle difference in viscosity feelings expressed by onomatopoeic words which are different in phonemes.

Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 30, 1, 124-137, 06 Jan. 2015, Peer-reviwed, With the widespread use of online shopping in recent years, consumer search requests for products have become more diverse. Previous web search methods have used adjectives as input by consumers. However, given that the number of adjectives that can be used to express textures is limited, it is debatable whether adjectives are capable of richly expressing variations of product textures. In Japanese, tactile and visual textures are easily and frequently expressed by onomatopoeia, such as“ fuwa-fuwa” for a soft and light sensation and“ kira-kira” for a glossy texture. Onomatopoeia are useful for understanding not only material textures but also a user’s intuitive, sensitive, and even ambiguous feelings evoked by materials. In this study, we propose a system to rank FMD images corresponding to texture associated with Japanese onomatopoeia based on their symbolic sound associations between the onomatopoeia phonemes and the texture sensations. Our system quantitatively estimates the texture sensations of input onomatopoeia, and calculates the similarities between the users’ impressions of the onomatopoeia and those of the images. Our system also suggests the images which best match the input onomatopoeia. An evaluation of our method revealed that the best performance was achieved when the SIFT features, the colors of the images, and text describing impressions of the images were used.

Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 30, 1, 319-330, 06 Jan. 2015, Peer-reviwed, The present study proposes a method which generates Japanese onomatopoeia corresponding to impressions inputted by users. Japanese onomatopoeia is frequently used in comics and advertisements. Effective onomatopoeia in those fields are directly associated with sensuous experiences of readers or consumers, but it is very difficult to create such expressions. Therefore, the system which generates effective novel onomatopoeia corresponding to the impression specified by users has been expected to be as a technology which supports creators. Our system uses 43 SD scales as those expressing our intuitive impressions. These scales consist of scales expressing impressions of a haptic senses, visual senses and affective senses. Users of the system can choose the kinds of SD scales to be used to create onomatopoeia among from 1 to 43 SD scales. The system uses the genetic algorithm (GA) to create onomatopoeia corresponding to inputted impressions. We consider onomatopoeic expressions as a individuals of GA, which are expressed by an array of numerical values. Namely, each numerical value of an individual denotes each phonological symbol in Japanese. By comparing impressions inputted by user with those of each generated onomatopoeia, the system proposes onomatopoeia corresponding to impressions of users. The system evaluation showed that impressions of onomatopoeic expressions generated by our system were similar to the impressions inputted by users.

日本感性工学会論文誌, Japan Society of Kansei Engineering, 13, 2, 353-359, 30 Apr. 2014, Peer-reviwed, Although human beings are capable of discerning a variety of textures through the sense of touch, there is as yet no consensus as to how best to classify those textures. To resolve this problem, we proposed a novel method of categorizing tactile textures using onomatopoeic words in Japanese. Based on the impressions they evoke, onomatopoeic words pertaining to tactile sensations are distributed on a two-dimensional space, making it possible to visualize how different tactile sensations are related to one another. Combining the results obtained with the subjects' evaluations of the materials touched in terms of how pleasant or unpleasant they find those materials, this paper attempts to visualize on a two-dimensional space the relationship between the pleasantness/unpleasantness associated with the materials and the tactile sensations that they evoke.

  • Adjective Metaphors Evoke Negative Meanings
    Maki Sakamoto; Akira Utsumi
PLOS ONE, PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE, 9, 2, 1-12, Feb. 2014, Peer-reviwed, Previous metaphor studies have paid much attention to nominal metaphors and predicative metaphors, but little attention has been given to adjective metaphors. Although some studies have focused on adjective metaphors, they only examined differences in the acceptability of various types of adjective metaphors. This paper explores the cognitive effects evoked by adjective metaphors. Three psychological experiments revealed that (1) adjective metaphors, especially those modified by color adjectives, tend to evoke negative effect; (2) although the meanings of metaphors are basically affected by the meanings of their vehicles, when a vehicle has a neutral meaning, negative meanings are evoked most frequently for adjective metaphors compared to nominal and predicative metaphors; (3) negative meanings evoked by adjective metaphors are related to poeticness, and poetic metaphors evoke negative meanings more easily than less poetic metaphors. Our research sheds new light on studies of the use of metaphor, which is one of the most basic human cognitive abilities.

  • A system to estimate an impression conveyed by onomatopoeia
Yuichiro Shimizu; Ryuichi Doizaki; Maki Sakamoto
Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 29, 1, 41-52, 2014, Peer-reviwed, In Japanese, onomatopoeia (i.e., imitative or mimetic words) is frequently used in daily life conversation to express one's intuitive and sensitive feelings. Many onomatopoeic expressions are very similar to each other and their meanings seem to be vague and ambiguous so that it is hard to catch minute semantic differences among onomatopoeic expressions. However, we use onomatopoeia, even novel onomatopoeia, to express our subjective, intuitive and sensitive feelings in daily language use. Therefore, estimating information conveyed by onomatopoeia is inevitable in constructing a human-like intelligent communication system. In this study, we propose a system to estimate information conveyed by onomatopoeia based on Japanese sound symbolism. The existence of synesthetic associations between sounds and sensory experiences (sound symbolism) has been demonstrated over the decades. It is also known that the sensory-sound correspondence can be found not only in words referring to visual shapes, but also in those referring to tactile sensations. So our system quantifies images of inputted onoma to evaluate the impressions of 312 onomatopoeic expressions, which cover all kinds of Japanese phonemes, against 43 pairs of adjectives in seven-points SD scales. We applied the phonemic image data to our model, and calculated the impression values of each phoneme by making use of a mathematical quantification theory class I. This system estimates rich information conveyed by not only conventional but also newly created onomatopoeic expressions and differentiates among a variety of onomatopoeic expressions, which are frequently similar to each other. We conducted another psychological experiment in order to confirm the effectiveness of our system. Results showed that our system succeeded in evaluating information conveyed by onomatopoeia.

HAPTICS: NEUROSCIENCE, DEVICES, MODELING, AND APPLICATIONS, SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN, 8618, LNCS 8618, 32-39, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Subjective evaluations of tactile sensations have been quantified using several pairs of adjective words describing material properties such as roughness or smoothness. However, this method forces participants to analyze their tactile experience for as many bipolar adjective scales as to grasp variations of tactile sensations. Here we propose a system that evaluates tactile feelings expressed by a single sound symbolic word. When a user inputs a sound symbolic word into the system, the system refers to a database and estimates the relationship between the sounds used in the expression and its meaning. The result is expressed by 26 pairs of scales, such as "rough - smooth", "warm cold", and "soft - hard".

Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 8007, 4, 126-134, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Japanese has a large number of sound symbolic words, onomatopoeia, which associates between sounds and sensory experiences. According to previous studies, a quantification of relationship between phonemes and images enables to predict the images evoked by onomatopoeia and to estimate meanings of onomatopoeia. In this study, we applied the quantification method and developed a system for generating Japanese onomatopoeias using genetic algorithm (GA). Our method uses 90 SD scales for expressing various impressions and genes for genetic algorithm which denote each phonological symbol in Japanese. Through genetic algorithm, the system generates and proposes onomatopoeias appropriate for impressions inputted by users. From the evaluation of our system, impressions of onomatopoeias generated by our method were similar to inputted impressions to generate onomatopoeias. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

日本バーチャルリアリティ学会論文誌, THE VIRTUAL REALITY SOCIETY OF JAPAN, 18, 4, 455-463, 2013, Peer-reviwed, In medical interviews, Japanese patients often use onomatopoeia such as "zuki-zuki" and "gan-gan" to express their pains or medical conditions. Using onomatopoeia when expressing pain enables simpler and more direct expressions than normal language as well as expresses the quantity (level/intensity) and quality (location/depth) of the pain. However, the subtle differences in characteristics of pain (such as quality), for example between "zeh-zeh" and "zero-zero", are difficult to grasp accurately. Although grasping these differences accurately is said to be critical, it depend on the level of skill of a doctor. So in this study, we constructed a system which supports communication between patients and doctors by evaluating meanings expressed by onomatopoeia. When a user inputs Japanese onomatopoeia, our system estimates quantities and qualities of pains using the relationships between the sounds used in the onomatopoeia and meanings expressed by 35 rating scales such as "sharp - dull", "strong - weak", and "deep - shallow". Visualizing of pains will help to compare between conventional onomatopoeic words such as "zeh-zeh" and novel words such as "zero-zero".

  • Music retrieval based on the relation between color association and lyrics
Tetsuaki Nakamur; Akira Utsumi; Maki Sakamoto
Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, 27, 3, 163-175, 2012, Peer-reviwed, Various methods for music retrieval have been proposed. Recently, many researchers are tackling developing methods based on the relationship between music and feelings. In our previous psychological study, we found that there was a significant correlation between colors evoked from songs and colors evoked only from lyrics, and showed that the music retrieval system using lyrics could be developed. In this paper, we focus on the relationship among music, lyrics and colors, and propose a music retrieval method using colors as queries and analyzing lyrics. This method estimates colors evoked from songs by analyzing lyrics of the songs. On the first step of our method, words associated with colors are extracted from lyrics. We assumed two types of methods to extract words associated with colors. In the one of two methods, the words are extracted based on the result of a psychological experiment. In the other method, in addition to the words extracted based on the result of the psychological experiment, the words from corpora for the Latent Semantic Analysis are extracted. On the second step, colors evoked from the extracted words are compounded, and the compounded colors are regarded as those evoked from the song. On the last step, colors as queries are compared with colors estimated from lyrics, and the list of songs is presented based on similarities. We evaluated the two methods described above and found that the method based on the psychological experiment and corpora performed better than the method only based on the psychological experiment. As a result, we showed that the method using colors as queries and analyzing lyrics is effective for music retrieval.

6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOFT COMPUTING AND INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, AND THE 13TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ADVANCED INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, IEEE, 518-522, 2012, Peer-reviwed, Color of materials influence on texture perceptions. Therefore, it is significant to recommend colors suitable for tactile sensations. In Japanese, tactile experiences are easily and frequently expressed by onomatopoeias such as "sara-sara" and "huwa-huwa". In this paper, we propose a system which recommends colors appropriate for tactile sensations associated with onomatopoeias based on Japanese sound symbolism. Our system estimates tactile images evoked by an input onomatopoeia quantitatively and calculates the similarities between the onomatopoeia and colors, whose images were respectively evaluated by SD scales in the psychological experiments. We conducted an experiment in order to confirm the validity of our system. Results indicate that our system succeeded in selecting cognitively plausible colors to represent tactile images of onomatopoeias. Our method makes it possible to develop a system which recommends materials with tactile sensations and colors desired by users via onomatopoeias.

6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOFT COMPUTING AND INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, AND THE 13TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ADVANCED INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, IEEE, 508-512, 2012, Peer-reviwed, In medical interviews, Japanese patients often use onomatopoeia such as "zuki-zuki" and "chiku-chiku" to express their pains or medical conditions. However, onomatopoeia varies from language to language, and Japanese onomatopoeia cannot be used to express their pains in medical interviews with foreign doctors. So in this study, we constructed a system which supports communication between Japanese patients and foreign doctors by evaluating meanings expressed by onomatopoeia. When a user inputs Japanese onomatopoeia, our system refers to the database, and estimates the relationships between the sounds used in the onomatopoeia and meanings expressed by multilingual 35 rating scales such as "sharp-dull", "strong-weak", and "momentary continuous".

6TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOFT COMPUTING AND INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, AND THE 13TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ADVANCED INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, IEEE, 513-517, 2012, Peer-reviwed, More than a hundred thousand brands are registered every year in Japan. Therefore, creating effective brand names gets more and more difficult. Psychological experiments conducted by many leading studies of sound symbolism in brand names showed that making good use of sound symbolism in brand names could be very important. No study, however, has attempted to develop any system to use sound symbolic effects of brand names. So, in this article, we developed a system which evaluates the images evoked by brand names based on sound symbolism and supports creation of brand names. We confirmed that outputs of the system were consistent with the evaluation of the participants with an accuracy of 82%.

Here we propose a novel method for classifying sensations for tactile textures using onomatopoeic words (sound symbolic words) in Japanese. The method generates a distribution diagram of onomatopoeic words based on subjective impressions of the words, and enables users to arrange and compare the tactile textures on the diagram in two-dimensionally visualized form. We describe two experiments performed to generate the distribution diagram and examine the validity of the diagram. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

  • Indirect Categorization as a Process of Predicative Metaphor Comprehension
    Akira Utsumi; Maki Sakamoto
METAPHOR AND SYMBOL, LAWRENCE ERLBAUM ASSOC INC-TAYLOR & FRANCIS, 26, 4, 299-313, 2011, Peer-reviwed, In this article, we address the problem of how people understand predicative metaphors such as "The rumor flew through the office," and argue that predicative metaphors are understood as indirect (or two-stage) categorizations. In the indirect categorization process, the verb (e.g., fly) of a predicative metaphor evokes an intermediate entity, which in turn evokes a metaphoric category of actions or states (e.g., "to spread rapidly and soon disappear") to be attributed to the target noun (e.g., rumor), rather than directly evoking a metaphoric category as argued by Glucksberg's (2001) categorization theory. We test our argument using two experiments, namely, offline comprehension and online priming. The offline comprehension experiment showed that interpretation of predicative metaphors had greater overlap with words indirectly associated with the verb than those directly associated with the verb. The online priming experiment demonstrated that indirectly associated words were activated during predicative metaphor comprehension, but directly associated words were not. These results provide convergent evidence for our argument, and thus the psychological validity of two-stage categorization as a process of predicative metaphor comprehension was confirmed.

  • The Role of Event Knowledge in Comprehending Synesthetic Metaphors
Tetsuaki Nakamura; Maki Sakamoto; Akira Utsumi
COGNITION IN FLUX, COGNITIVE SCIENCE SOCIETY, INC, 1898-1903, 2010, Peer-reviwed, A synesthetic metaphor (e.g., "sweet touch") is a metaphor that results from a combination of a modifier and a head, where they express different perceptual qualities. Most of the existing studies examine how the acceptability of synesthetic metaphors can be explained by the pairing of adjective modifier's and head noun's modalities. However, little attention has been paid to how people comprehend synesthetic metaphors. This paper explores how people comprehend Japanese synesthetic metaphors. In our psychological experiment we collected 10388 words associated with 62 synesthetic metaphors and classified them into the following four kinds of features: common (features listed for the metaphor, the vehicle and the topic), vehicleshared (features listed for both the metaphor and the vehicle, but not listed for the topic), topic-shared (features listed for both the metaphor and the topic, but not listed for the vehicle), and emergent (features listed for the metaphor, but not listed for either the vehicle or the topic). The result showed that there were significantly more emergent features than the other kinds of features in the comprehension of synesthetic metaphors. This result suggests that we do not so directly comprehend synesthetic metaphors based on salient features of the vehicle or the topic. In this paper we focus on event knowledge which is assumed to play a crucial role in comprehending synesthetic metaphors. We analyzed how many words associated with synesthetic metaphors could be classified into those based on event knowledge. The results showed that there were significantly more words based on event knowledge than those which could not be classified as words based on event knowledge. This result suggests that event knowledge play an important role in comprehending synesthetic metaphors.

  • The Middle and Related Constructions in English: A Cognitive Network Analysis
    Maki Sakamoto
English Linguistics, 18, 1, 86-110, 2001, Peer-reviwed, The purpose of this paper is to show that the middle is semantically related to the unaccusative and the unergative, which exhibit basically the same syntactic form as the middle, namely [NP-V]. By placing the middle in a cognitive network of intransitive constructions, we will attempt to account for the complex nature of the middle. We will show that there are middles structured based on related intransitives, while the middle has its own distinctive meaning and forms a prototype-based category of its own. We will argue that extensions of the network involving the middle are motivated by the Agent-like property of the entity denoted by the subject. © 2001, The English Linguistic Society of Japan.
53, 6, 564-566, Japanese, Invited, Introduction scientific journal, 0447-8053, 110009900127, AN00116625

  • A study of fMRI measurement of brain activities for the understanding of sound symbolism and common senses
    TANAKA SHIGERU
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, To identify active brain regions representing subjective impression expressed by Japanese onomatopoeias based on sound symbolism, we performed fMRI measurements in response to auditory and visual presentations of onomatopoeias. Although we obtained typical patterns of brain activities when onomatopoeias were presented, we did not detect statistically significant differences in fMRI signals between onomatopoeias and standard adjectives and/or adverbs. This result suggests that each onomatopoeia has acquired its own niche in the semantic space spanned by Japanese vocabularies at the same level of adjectives and adverbs, and hence does not have a special characteristic other than the fact that it has emerged from sound symbolism., 26540141
