  • iCAMS: A Mobile Communication Tool Using Location and Schedule Information
Yasuto Nakanishi; Kazunari Takahashi; Takayuki Tsuji; Katsuya Hakozaki
The development of a new mobile communication tool, iCAMS, that uses location and schedule information to facilitate efficient communication is discussed. User studies of iCAMS indicate that user context, location information, and communication method protocols are useful but that some location and privacy issues should further be given importance. The users can use iCAMS not only to decide which communication channel to use but also to gather situation awareness information regarding other group members. The system also deletes the automatic routing and improves the interface for a manual action that callers initiate after receiving contextual feedback., Jan. 2004, IEEE Pervasive Computing, 3, 1, 82-88, English, Book review, 1536-1268, 2342639507

  • Icams: A mobile communication tool using location and schedule information
Yasuto Nakanishi; Kazunari Takahashi; Takayuki Tsuji; Katsuya Hakozaki
We have developed a communication support system that estimates the situation of a person using schedule information and location information provided by a PHS (Personal Handy Phone System). From the lessons provided by our prior studies and inventions, we developed a new mobile communication tool for cellular phones that uses location information and schedule information. This is a kind of dynamic telephone book, which we have named iCAMS. We performed user studies for eight weeks in Tokyo with a group of students and with a group of small-office workers. By analyzing the communication logs, questionnaires and interviews we conducted with the users, we evaluated our system., Springer Verlag, 2002, Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 2414, 239-252, English, 1611-3349, 84958970422

  • Context Aware Messaging Servece: Development and Evaluation of a Communication System Using Location Information and Schedule Information
NAKANISHI Yasuto; TSUJI Takayuki; OHYAMA Minoru; HAKOZAKI Katsuya
This paper describes a context-based dynamic messaging system, called "Context Aware Messaging Service". It uses schedule information and location information of the message addressee. According to the addressee's communication context (schedule, location, and available media), the system selects the most suitable telephone umber or e-mail address, and redirects each incoming message dynamically. It also writes the schedule and location information of users into an HTML file which users can share on the WWW. We had an experiment for two months in Tokyo and the users are a group of SOHO workers. We evaluated the system with their opinions and with the analysis of communication logs. Both dynamic message redirect and sharing communication contexts produced smooth communication. The users preferred sharing communication contexts and it improved feeling of a team., Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), Jul. 2001, Transactions of Information Processing Society of Japan, 42, 7, 1847-1857, Japanese, 1882-7764, 110002725908, AN00116647

  • A browsing system for a database using visualization of user preferences
    H Kanai; K Hakozaki
This paper describes a browsing system for a database using visualization of user preferences. The system has the following features: (1) The use of 3D thumbnail objects to represent their contents and properties (2) The use of some property views and multidimensional scaling (MDS) to lay out the objects in information space, and (3) The use of update mechanism to perform the adaptive visualization, to changes in user preferences. In this environment, the user becomes aware that there are information, sets which the user seems to be interested in, from objects in information space, and stroll there., IEEE COMPUTER SOC, 2000, 2000 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION VISUALISATION, PROCEEDINGS, 277-282, English, 1093-9547, WOS:000089401000041

  • Conceptual Design of a Virtual Library for Personal Use
Katsuya Hakozaki; Hideaki Kanai; Katsunori Ishikawa; Hong Chen; Katsushi Izawa
This paper proposes a concept of the Yawara personalized virtual library and its prototype design. The main purpose of the library is to provide a user with a personalized information set accessible through a user-friendly interface. In order to attain machine and operating system independence, the library is constructed by VRML and its WWW browsers and, as information sources, HTML data widely distributed on the Internet. The virtual librarian agent helps to find and acquire the data sets based on user behavior. The virtual librarian keeps the user's personal characteristics, obtained from his/her reading history, and book characteristics. As the user working space, personal bookshelves are provided to work with the stored books. The system will be a powerful tool for intelligent work fully utilizing the Internet. © 1999 Scripta Technica., John Wiley and Sons Inc., 1999, Systems and Computers in Japan, 30, 3, 43-51, English, 0882-1666, 0033100136
