  • Estimation of body segment densities for Japanese Athletes from magnetic resonance imaging
    岡田英孝; 横澤俊治; 高橋英幸
バイオメカニズム学会誌, バイオメカニズム学会, 44, 3, 162-170, 01 Aug. 2020, Peer-reviwed, The purpose of this study was to estimate the body segment density from one MRI image for each body segment bycontinuously acquiring cross-sectional images of Japanese male and female athletes using MRI. First, a preliminary analysis was conducted for six male and female athletes to determine the range of appropriate cross section selection for estimating the body segment density. Next, we used 21 other male and female athletes as subjects and estimated the body segment density from one MRI image for each body segment. As a result of the preliminary analysis, it was suggested that analysis of one MRI image for each body segment gave the similar value of body segment density as in analyzing many successive MRI images. Moreover, the sex difference in body segment densities between themale and female athletes and the difference in body segment densities between the athletes and the cadaver specimens (Caucasian middleaged or aged males) were clarified.

  • Regional differences in Ca2+ entry along the proximal-middle-distal muscle axis during eccentric contractions in rat skeletal muscle
    Tabuchi A; Eshima H; Tanaka Y; Nogami S; Inoue N; Sudo M; Okada H; Poole D. C; Kano Y
Journal of Applied Physiology, 127, 3, 828-837, 2019, Peer-reviwed, True, Eccentric (ECC) contraction-induced muscle damage is associated with calcium ion (Ca2+) influx from the extracellular milieu through stretch-activated channels. It remains unknown whether Ca2+ influx consequent to repetitive ECC contractions is nonuniform across different muscle regions. We tested the hypothesis that there are regional differences in Ca2+ entry along the proximal-middle-distal muscle axis. Tibialis anterior (TA) muscles of adult male Wistar rats were exposed by reflecting the overlying skin and fasciae and ECC contractions evoked by peroneal nerve stimulation paired with simultaneous ankle extension (50 times/set, 2 protocols: 1 set and 10 sets). During ECC in the proximal, middle, and distal TA, we determined 1) muscle fiber extension by high-speed camera (200 frames/s) and 2) Ca2+ accumulation by in vivo bioimaging (Ca2+-sensitive probe Fura-2-acetoxymethyl ester). Muscle fiber extension from resting was significantly different among regions (i.e., proximal, 4.0%: < middle, 11.2%: < distal, 17.0%; ECC phase length at 500th contraction). Intracellular Ca2+ accumulation after 1 set of ECC was higher in the distal (1.46 ± 0.04, P < 0.05) than the proximal (1.27 ± 0.04) or middle (1.26 ± 0.05) regions. However, this regional Ca2+ accumulation difference disappeared by 32.5 min after the 1 set protocol when the muscle was quiescent and by contraction set 5 for the 10-set protocol. The initial preferential ECC-induced Ca2+ accumulation observed distally was associated spatially with the greater muscle extension compared with that of the proximal and middle regions. Disappearance of the regional Ca2+ accumulation disparity in quiescent and ECC-contracting muscle might be explained, in part, by axial Ca2+ propagation and account for the uniformity of muscle damage across regions evident 3 days post-ECC.NEW & NOTEWORTHY After 1 set of 50 eccentric (ECC) contractions in the anterior tibialis muscle, intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) accumulation evinces substantial regional heterogeneity that is spatially coherent with muscle length changes (i.e., distal [Ca2+]i > middle, proximal). However, irrespective of whether 50 or 500 ECC contractions are performed, this heterogeneity is subsequently abolished, at least in part, by axial intracellular Ca2+ propagation. This Ca2+ homogenization across regions is consistent with the absence of any interregional difference in muscle damage 3 days post-ECC.

  • Age-associated changes of walking parameters in Japanese adult women.
Kazutoshi Kikkawa; Hidetaka Okada; Ryuga Oishi
Rejuvenation research, 17, 2, 229-34, Apr. 2014, Peer-reviwed, True, The purpose of this paper is to clarify the age-associated changes in walking movements. A two-dimensional movement analysis was conducted on a sample of 177 healthy women aged 19-82 years, with performance descriptors, kinematics, and kinetics as the parameters. An analysis of co-variance, with the gait velocity as co-variate and the categorized age group as a fixed factor, was adopted to examine the differences in each parameter among eight age groups. We conclude that age-associated changes in walking movement occur due to the essential effect of aging in walking, rather than due to differences in the physique or decrease of the gait velocity.

発育発達研究, Japan Society of Human Growth and Development, 2013, 59, 20-26, 2013, Peer-reviwed, In the present study, we examined longitudinal changes in body size and fitness test records of high school students (males:n=16 ; females:n=6) who had been engaged in"Aikido"as their extracurricular activities from the 1st through the 3rd grade. The chronological changes of body size and and fitness test records were analyzed by repeated-measure analysis of variance at significant level of P<0.05. Both the body size physical fitness of every subject were significantly improved throughout the three years. This led us to the conclusion that, by training in "Aikido""throughout their high school years, even the subjects with poor body compositions at baseline showed conspicuous improvement compared with the standard levels of japanese high school counterparts. Another significant improvement was observed in their fitness test records , especially such components as flexibility, agility and grip-strength. Thus, our findings suggest that tge specific skill training in "Aikido", such as footwork, turnover of attack and defense, and'kata' (training of forms), might result in the improvement of fitness levels.

Rejuvenation research, 15, 2, 198-200, Apr. 2012, Peer-reviwed, True, The objectives of this study were to explore a method of evaluating the walking motion of elderly males using mainly kinetic parameters and to determine how to maintain their level of walking motion to equal that of the young. We employed the coefficient of variation (CV) (=standard deviation[SD]/MEAN * 100), z-score, and weighted z-score (WZ) (=z-score/CV) and examined the relationship between the WZ of each parameter and age by regression analysis. Finally, we used the regression line to estimate "gait age" and determined the critical factors of gait decay in elderly individuals.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE ASME/JSME 8TH THERMAL ENGINEERING JOINT CONFERENCE 2011, VOL 1 PTS A AND B, AMER SOC MECHANICAL ENGINEERS, 71-+, 2011, Peer-reviwed, Light in the near-infrared wavelength range can penetrate deeping into biological tissues because the absorption by both water and hemoglobin is much smaller than in the other wavelength ranges. Oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobins have different light absorption characteristics. Therefore, by obtaining tomographic images of the absorption characteristics, it will be possible to know the hemodynamics inside deep tissues. Thus, the diffuse optical tomography (DOT) is expected as a new modality of biomedical imaging. In this study, we try to obtain DOT images of the forearms by conducting two types of exercise, and their differences caused by the muscle activity are discussed. By comparing the reconstructed DOT images with the magnetic resonance images of the forearm at the same position, the activated muscles can be identified in detail. As a result, the hemodynamics in the dominant muscles when performing flexion and extension of wrist are observed.

Some predictive equations were established for each gender (109 males and 139 females)-once for all variables, second for the stepwise variable selection method. The range of motion (ROM) of knee and hip and step length are the stable parameters in age-predictive models for both genders. Although the model achieved the Minimum Akaike's Information Criterion Estimate (MAICE), it did not reflect sufficiently the regimes of variable selection.

  • Smart suit with variable stiffness mechanism (3rd report, development of a prototype and verify the effectiveness)
Toshiaki Hayashi; Takayuki Tanaka; Maria Q. Feng; Hidetaka Okada
Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 6048, 60480F, 2005, Peer-reviwed, Wearable robots, especially power suits to enhance human activity are one of the most interesting and important topics. This study aims to develop a wearable robot that is small-size, light-weight for improving human performance and reducting muscle fatigue. So we proposed smart suit with variable stiffness mechanism that utilize elastic forces for assist and make assistance control by impedance control. Because of to utilize elastic forces for assist, the capacity of the suit do not reliance on weight of actuators and their's energy source well than conventional power suits. In consequence, we think the suit can realize miniaturization and getting light-weight. In a previous study, we verified the effectiveness of smart suit with variable stiffness mechanism by experiments and simulations in order to design the suit which can tune the stiffness of joint mechanically, and had been able to confirm the effectiveness. Based on these results, we design the smart suit with variable stiffness mechanism that be able to control number of working spring by small actuator, and at any knee joint angle, elastic energy occurrence is variable by displacement angle of ankle joint. We could obtain a result of the output per a mass of the suit is more large than conventional power suits. And we confirm that reducting muscle fatigue by experiments on knee bends and walking in case that subjects wear the suit. In this paper, we show the suit that we developed and effectiveness of the suit for human working.

Taiikugaku kenkyu (Japan Journal of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences), Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, 45, 3, 414-421, 2000, Peer-reviwed, This study was conducted to clarify the relationship between features of change in velocity and performance of world class athletes in the men's 400-m hurdle race(400mH).Nine final races of 400mH were videotaped with several video cameras panning from the start to the finish at 60 fields/s.After the time indication had been superimposed on each field of the VTR images, the time at touchdown immediately after hurdling was obtained.Using the flash of the starter's gun recorded on the VTR image, each hurdle touchdown time from the start, and each section thme(from each hurdle to the next)was obtained. The results of regression analysis showed a significantly high correlation (r=0.90, p<0.001)between 400mH performance and mean section velocity from the 5th to the 8th hurdle(H5-8), and a significant correlation(r=-0.61, p<0.05)between 400mH performance and te rate of deceleration in H5-8.These results indicate that in 400mH it is important to avoid decreasing velocity and to maintain a high velocity in H5-8 of the race in order to attain a high performance.

バイオメカニズム学会誌, バイオメカニズム学会, 23, 2, 112-121, 1999, Peer-reviwed, The purpose of this study was to investigate motion patterns for elderly people stepping over obstacles with a videography by comparing with those of the young. Crossing speed, step length, and step frequency of the elderly were significantly smaller than those of the young. With an increase in obstacle heights, crossing speed and step frequency decreased in the elderly, but there was no significant change in those of the young. With increased obstacle heights, the elevation of the lead leg increased in both groups, depending more on the elevation of the thigh and the flexion of the hip and ankle joints for the elderly, and the elevation of the shank and knee flexion for the young. In the elderly, the range of motion for the upper arm was significantly smaller than that of the young, and the forward lean of the trunk increased after landing of the lead leg at high obstacle. This may have made the clearance of the trail leg easier.

体育学研究, Japanese Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences, 44, 6, 510-521, 1999, Peer-reviwed, A study was conducted to investigate the effect of gastrocnemius muscle stiffness on achilles tendon force in rebound jumps on slanted contact surfaces. Five trained college jumpers and throwers, and six active males executed five continuous repetition rebound jumps under three surface gradient conditions. The surface gradients were 8 degrees uphill type (U8), 8 degrees downhill type (D8), and level type (L) conditions. Force plate and limb position data were recorded simultaneously during all jumps. The changes in length of the achilles tendon (L_), m. gastrocnemius (L_) and gastrocnemius muscle-achilles tendon complex (L_) during the eccentric phase were calculated according to the mode1 of Voigt et al. (1995) and Grieve et al. (1978). The main results were as follows; 1. Jumping height in U8 and L was higher than in D8. There was also a tendency for a higher achilles tendon force at the midpoint (ATF_) in U8. On the other hand, in U8 and D8, L_ was lower, and L_/L_ was higher than in L. 2. There was significant positive correlations between the ground reaction force at the midpoint (GRF_) and jumping height, and ATF_ and jumping height in U8, D8 and L. 3. There were significant positive correlations between GRF_ and ATF_, and L_/L_ and ATF_ in U8 and L. However, L_lt:MTC> and ATF_ showed a significant negative correlation. These results indicate that the stretch length of the gastrocnemius muscle-achilles tendon complex is lower, and ATF_ higher under uphill-type conditions than under level conditions because L_ becomes higher as gastrocnemius muscle stiffness increases.

  • Is the selection of body segment inertia parameters critical to the results of kinematic and kinetic analysis of human movement?

ANTHROPOLOGICAL SCIENCE, ANTHROPOLOGICAL SOC NIPPON, 106, 4, 371-383, Oct. 1998, Peer-reviwed, We studied the effects of body segment inertia parameters (BSPs) on the results of biomechanical analyses of human movement.. The vertical jump was taken as an example. A subject was asked to perform 15 vertical jumps. He was measured using an automatic coordinate acquisition system and a force platform. Kinematic and kinetic variables were computed using five BSP sets: 1) Average for three-year-old Japanese children reported by Yokoi and others (1986), 2) Regression equation for young adult Japanese athletes reported by Ae and others (1992), 3) Average for young adult Japanese athletes reported by Ae and others (1992), 4) Average for young Japanese adults reported by Matsui (1956), and 5) Average for aged Caucasian cadavers reported by Chandler and others (1975). Vertical displacement and velocity for body segments and for the whole body exhibit few differences among the five sets. In time-series curves for each joint torque, the variance shown by a single subject was more pronounced than the variance due to differences in BSPs. These results suggest that selection of BSPs apparently has little effect on the results of kinetic analyses of human movement and on conclusions based on these results.

  • Body segment inertia properties of Japanese elderly
    岡田英孝; 阿江通良; 藤井範久; 森丘保典
バイオメカニズム13, Society of Biomechanisms, 13, 125-139, 1996, Peer-reviwed, In the analysis of human movement, it is significant that appropriate parameters of the inertia property of body segments should be used because they will affect various computed kinetic variables. When analyzing the movement of elderly people, it is also desirable to use the inertia parameters of the body segments suitable for the elderly. Although there are appropriate sets of inertia parameters of the body segments for children (Yokoi et al., 1986) and young adults (Ae et al., 1992) of Japanese, no report exists on those for Japanese elderly. The purposes of this study were to determine the mass, the location of the center of mass (CM) and the principal moments of inertia about three axes of the body segments for Japanese elderly males and females by using an elliptical zone model (Jensen, 1978; Ae et al., 1992), and to develop a set of regression equations to estimate inertia parameters of the body segments using simple anthropometric measurements as predictors. Subjects were 90 Japanese elderly males aged 62 to 86 yr. (mean 75.1 yr.) and 89 Japanese elderly females aged 61 to 83 yr. (mean 73.0 yr.). Each subject, wearing swimming suit and cap, was photographed in a standing position in the measurement frame with a thin mirror mounted at an angle of 45° to the subject. Body segments were the head, whole torso, upper arms, forearms, hands, thighs, shanks, feet, upper torso and lower torso. They were modeled as a stacked system of elliptical zones 2cm in thickness. Segment density was assumed to be uniform and selected from 26 sets of segment densities after Dempster (1955) and Chandler et al. (1975). The mean errors in the estimation of total body mass were -0.07±0.54% (maximal error: -2.03%) for the males and -0.01±0.45% (maximal error: -1.27%) for the females. Equations for the estimation of the body segment inertia parameters were determined using a stepwise multiple regression with age, standing height, body weight and segment length as predictors. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: 1) There were significant differences in many body segment inertia parameters between the elderly males and females. The percent mass ratios of the forearm, hand, foot and upper torso for the elderly males were significantly larger than those for the elderly females, but the thigh, shank and lower torso ratios for the elderly females were significantly larger than those for the males. 2) There were significant differences in many body segment inertia parameters between the elderly and the young adults (Ae et al., 1992) and between the Japanese elderly and the Canadian elderly (Jensen et al., 1993; 1994). 3) The correlation coefficients between the body segment inertia parameters determined and estimated from the regression equations were all significant (0.328-0.979; p<0.01). The equations determined in this study should be valid for estimation of the body segment inertia properties for Japanese elderly.

  • QUANTIFICATION AND A SIMPLE CORRECTION OF PERSPECTIVE ERROR IN 2-DIMENSIONAL MOTION ANALYSIS OF HUMAN MOVEMENT
    T YOKOI; H OKADA
ANTHROPOLOGICAL SCIENCE, ANTHROPOLOGICAL SOC NIPPON, 102, 3, 305-317, Jul. 1994, Peer-reviwed, The perspective error in two-dimensional motion analysis based on film and/or video images was theoretically quantified, and the practical effects of the error on the accuracy in two-dimensional kinematic variables were investigated using the data of sprint running. The equations proposed in the present study may be useful for estimating the amount of perspective error and determining appropriate camera distance in two-dimensional motion analysis. In practical analysis of human movement, the error affects translational and rotational kinematics of limb segments. If the optical axis of the camera is perpendicular to the calibration plane and the intersection of the axis and plane can be detected, the effects of perspective error on translational kinematics for the limb segments can be reduced to a certain extent.

バイオメカニズム12, Society of Biomechanisms, 12, 85-96, 1994, Peer-reviwed, In an aging society, it is important to study the states and mechanisms of decline in body functions with aging and of changes in motion with aging. It is especially valuable to investigate the functions of the lower extremities, since they are main factors determining safety as well as competitiveness in almost all sports activities. The purpose of this study is to cross-sectionally investigate the changes in joint moment and power of lower extremities for the elderly during a standing long jump using a force platform and a high-speed VTR camera. The subjects of this study were thirty-three healthy elderly males (62yr. to 86yr.). They were divided into three age groups: the 60s(n=12), 70s(n=14), and 80s(n=7). They were videotaped at 200 frames per second with high-speed VTR camera while they were performing the standing long jump from a force platform with maximal effort. Using ground reaction force data from the force platform and coordinate data of seven body landmarks (toe, ball of the foot, heel, ankle, knee, great trochanter, and suprasternale) from VTR images, equations of motion for thigh, shank, and foot were solved, and then joint moments, powers, and mechanical works were calculated. Joint moment curves and power curves were evaluated after being normalized by time from the start of the jump (ST) to the takeoff (OFF) and averaged for each group. For the hip and knee joint extensor's moment acted predominantly from ST to the point of about 90% completion of the jump, and then flexor's moment acted predominantly up to the OFF. For the ankle joint, extensor's moment acted predominantly through-out the jump. The power curve for the hip and knee has three peaks. The first one was power by extensor's eccentric contraction (EEh, EEk), the second was power by extensor's concentric contraction (ECh, ECk), and the third was power by flexor's eccentric contraction (FEh, FEk). The power curve for the ankle has only two peaks (EEa, ECa). From the investigation of these curves and these maximum values, the following results were obtained. 1) Although the magnitude of downward kicking force in a standing long jump hardly changed with aging, magnitude of backward kicking force decreased with aging, and jumping distance for the elderly also decreased proportionately. 2) Maximum extensor's moment and maximum power of joints in lower extremities decreased with aging. The magnitude of decrease was the largest in the hip joint, the second largest in the ankle joint, and smallest in the knee joint. 3) The power by concentric contraction of the extensors in the standing long jump was influenced by aging and decreased. The power by eccentric contraction of the extensors, however, was hardly influenced by aging. 4) In a standing long jump, which requires that the body be largely inclined at the takeoff, elderly people tended to jump with smaller forward incline of their bodies to avoid being in an unstable situation.

    J. Anthrop. Soc. Nippon, The Anthropological Society of Nippon, 100, 4, 527-534, 1993, Peer-reviwed, Direct linear transformation (DLT) method was applied to the three dimensional anthropometry using slide film image, and the limitation of estimation accuracy was examined by comparing values obtained through the computation based on DLT procedures and manual measurement. The standard errors of estimated three dimensional coordinates were around 4mm in 1, 000mm×1, 000 mm×2, 000mm of calibration area. Also, the acceptable estimation errors of anthropometric dimensions were obtained through the present photogrammetry. The three dimensional slide film analysis with DLT method thus may be an useful photogrammetry for estimating anthropometric dimensions as well as spatial relations among anthropometric landmarks.
