    日本塑性加工学会 学会誌「塑性と加工」, The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, 53, 622, 48-52, Nov. 2012, Peer-reviwed, Circular tube of copper with spiral projections on the inside wall is used for the improvement of the heat exchange efficiency of the heat exchanger. The copper tube is made by swaging. The copper price is expensive and the swaging manufacture speed is late. If the tube is conventionally manufactured by extrusion and made of aluminum, not only the price of tube becomes cheap but also manufacture speed gets faster. And the projection of spiral shape for heat effective exchanger can be made. We modified the traditional extrusion machine and successfully extruded the trial extruded circular tube with many spiral projections on the inside wall. The billet material is lead. We discussed experimentally the influence of shape and the size on the trial extruded circular tube about processing conditions. The established number of projection is 20 and lead angle is 30 degree with the spiral projection on the inside wall of the circular tube. It was possible to extrude established circular tubes with many spiral projections on the inside wall under appropriated processing conditions.

  • Prediction of stress-strain diagram from forming load in stretch forming

In the proposed method, a set of characteristics in a stress-strain diagram and the same number of characteristics in a stroke-load diagram are chosen. A square matrix of influence coefficient is calculated on a master material using finite element analysis so that each element of the matrix is a partial differential of a stroke-load characteristic by a stress-strain characteristic. In the actual process of stretch forming, the differences of characteristics in a stroke-load diagram are measured between the target and master materials. Based on the differences of characteristics of stroke-load, the characteristics of a stress-strain diagram for the target material are calculated using the inverse matrix of the influence coefficient. In the present paper, the essential concept is introduced, and the error of prediction is estimated numerically, followed by experimental verification. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Effect of clearance on new shearing method with horizontal tool movement of 1100 aluminum sheet

A new cutting method has been invented for sheet metal by the authors. It has been named the MM-shearing method. There are several advantages in the method, for example small cutting force, beautiful cutting surface and no burrs on the cut surface. Moreover, the equipment used in the method is inexpensive. However, there are some important parameters to consider in the MM-shearing method, such as tool angle, clearance between the tool and die, sheet thickness, and cutting speed. In this paper, a series of experiments was carried out to examine the suitable clearance. The experimental material is 1100 aluminum sheet (Japanese Industrial Standard). The cutting force, ratio of sheared and fractured surfaces, inclination angle, burr height, roughness, and Vickers hardness of the cutting surface are examined corresponding to the clearance change. The principle and characteristics of the MM-shearing method are made clear in this paper in terms of the clearance between the tool and die.

The basic concept is that ageing in the microscale and the deformation and temperature rise in the macroscale should be analysed simultaneously. In the macroscale, mechanical analysis is carried out followed by thermal analysis. In the microscale, the diffusion of carbon is estimated considering the history of strain and temperature analysed by the macroscale analyses. Using the proposed method, metal forming analysis is conducted and experimental verification is conducted with emphasis on carbon content and deformation rate. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.   • Composite structure composed of overlapped fibre bundles, thermoplastic resin and metal plate for secondary forming process

    COMPOSITES SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, ELSEVIER SCI LTD, 70, 9, 1338-1345, Sep. 2010, Peer-reviwed, A simple shape of a composite is preferable in mass production, while a curved or stretched shape is sometimes preferable for final products. High formability would enable the composite to deform into a preferable shape by secondary forming. In this paper, a structure for a composite is proposed to enhance formability. The composite is composed of reinforcing fibre bundles, thermoplastic resin as the matrix and metal plates. The reinforcing fibre bundles are discontinuous, and are intentionally overlapped in the longitudinal direction. The resin including fibre bundles is sandwiched between the metal plates. As the thermoplastic resin is melted at an adequate temperature, heating would enhance the mobility of thermoplastic resin resulting in high formability at the secondary forming. If the overlapped length is adequately designed, the composite would still maintain high strength after the secondary formation.   • Influence of Initial Thickness of Circular Tube in Rotary-Draw Bending Adding Axial Pushing Force for Suppression of Flatness

The authors have been considering in previous research works the mechanism of the suppression of flatness and confirm that the flatness was successfully suppressed by the axial pushing force with sufficient pressure die force by using steel tube. When the bending radius R-0 is larger than 2.5 times of diameter d(0), the flatness can be suppressed under 3.0%. However, the effect that the difference of the initial thickness of tube in this process method is not clarified. Therefore, in the present research, FEM and experiments were conducted by changing the initial thickness of the STK590 (JIS) tube from 2.0 to 3.2 mm for a diameter of 27.2 mm. As a result, when the axial pushing force is over 215 MPa while the initial thickness is between 2.3 and 3.2 mm, buckling occurs. When the axial pushing force is over 143 MPa while the initial thickness is 2.0 mm, wrinkle occurs and it is the limit of processing. However, when the initial thickness of circular tube is between 2.3 and 3.2 mm while the axial force is 143 MPa, the flatness could be suppressed within 4.0% for any thickness.

  • FEM Analysis of Tube Straightener Adopting Implicit Scheme

Straightening determines the final shape in longitudinal direction and cross section as well as the distribution of residual stress. In particular, rotary straightener is an effective method with high productivity for long products of bar rods and tubes. The working conditions for the rotary straightener are usually determined based on the interpretation of technicians in practical production lines. In the present research, a complete FEM model, named "Trial 3", was built up adopting the implicit scheme for the purpose of precise estimation of tube straightening in three-stand straightener. Four types of modeling were tried overall and comparison was made. While Trial 1, 2 and 3 adopted the implicit scheme, Trial 4 adopted the explicit scheme. In Trial 3 of complete model, all the rolls are reproduced and no prescribed displacements are assigned just as actual straightening. Trial 4 of explicit scheme has the same setting to Trial 3. Trial 4 of explicit scheme showed poor results and stress and strain histories are quite different from those in the other models. Trial 1, 2 and 3 have shown similar results except a phenomenon whereby only Trial 3 shows axial shrinkage and radial expansion.

  • Computational Method of Springback in V-bending of Sheet Having Bausching Effect

Hence, the on-line measurement of the clamping angle and prediction of springback are key technologies for the precision bending. Recently, a precise angle sensor for the measurement of clamp angle has been developed, and implemented into bending machines for the on-line measurement. If the springback is known a priori, the required clamp angle can be calculated and the clamping position can be decided using a feedback control system with the precise angle sensor. As a result, a high-accuracy V-bend process becomes possible. In this research, a new computational method, based on fundamental bending theory, is proposed for the prediction of springback. However, errors will arise if the material anisotropy or the Bauschinger effect in springback are not accounted for. For the consideration of the Bauschinger effect, a new method is introduced in the fundamental analysis. First, a series of tension tests are conducted for the investigation of the Bauschinger effect for various values of pre-strain and different material types. Based on these results, a new empirical equation is proposed for the description of the Bauschinger effect. The empirical equation is combined with the fundamental bending theory to improve the calculation accuracy of the springback, followed by experimental verification. This method makes it possible to reduce the error margin of springback to less than 0.5 degree with a computing time of about one second and can also be easily implemented on the filed.

  • Effect of tube wall thickness in Joining of Aluminum Tube and Holed Rib by Extrusion

    ADVANCES ON HOT EXTRUSION AND SIMULATION OF LIGHT ALLOYS, TRANS TECH PUBLICATIONS LTD, 424, 121-128, 2010, Peer-reviwed, Existence of some holes at internal ribs enhances the function and value of the tubes. A new extrusion method is proposed here for the forming of this shape by extrusion with joining. The method involves the use of a unique mandrel that has a slit along its axis and two guides at the slit exit. A holed sheet is fed through the slit and joined with the inner surface of extrude tube. Effect of two parameters, that are tube-wall thickness and guide position h which is distance from guide top to die surface were clarified by FEA. Two kinds of three-dimensional analysis models were prepared. One of the analysis models treats the rib as rigid body to examine a gap between rib and tube. Another model treats the rib as the elasto-plasticity body as well as the billet to examine the effect of the guide position and the tube wall thickness on the rib deformation. The series of analyses was carried out with emphasis on the metal flow. The gap between tube and rib is able to be suppressed small and joining condition becomes satisfactory when guide position rose or tube wall was thin. When the guide position rose further, or the tube wall thickness was excessively thinner, the amount of the deformation of the rib increases, and it causes defects.

In the numerical analysis, finite element method is applied to study the residual stress in tube drawing both with and without a plug. Under the condition that a plug is not used, the axial residual stress is analyzed changing the tube wall thickness. The axial residual stress pattern is almost the same regardless of the wall thickness, and it is tensile near the outer surface and compressive near the inner surface. Based on the results, the mechanism of residual stress generation is assumed and a certain reduction in thickness by a plug is envisaged to be effective for levelling of the residual stress. it is thought that the residual stress would be levelled more efficiently with the increase of reduction in thickness, though the drawing force would increase at the same time. Therefore, it is important to find the minimum bare reduction in thickness to level the residual stress. Successively, a series of numerical experiments was carried out to decide the effective range of thickness reduction by a plug. In order to evaluate the intensity of residual stress, an index, which is the integration of the absolute value of axial residual stress, was introduced. As a result, it is revealed that a certain minimum bare thickness reduction exists, beyond which the intensity of the residual stress is significantly reduced. In order to verify the result of numerical analysis, experiments were also conducted using a drawing machine. In the experiments, the intensity of residual stress was evaluated by a slitting method where the tubes were divided into eight pieces by slitting every 45 degrees and the displacements of the tube ends were measured.   • 平板の面内逐次打点曲げにおける打撃角度の影響

    日本塑性加工学学会誌「塑性と加工, The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, 49, 569, 81—85-583, Jun. 2008, Peer-reviwed, Incremental in-plane bending, which was developed by the authors, is a new flexible manufacturing technology for the small-lot production of sheet metals with various bending radii. A sheet metal is bent incrementally by inclined punch beating. Beating angle is an important factor of in-plane bending. The effects of beating angle on in-plane bending were investigated. Beating force, the distribution of thickness strain and bending radius were experimentally determined. It was clarified that beating angle is an important factor that affects bending radius. Moreover, deformation simulation was carried out and the effect of beating angle on the in-plane bending mechanism was compared with experimental result. It was found that there is a critical beating angle for obtaining the minimum bending radius for fixed indentation and width of sheet metals.

  • Joining of 1050 aluminum circular tube and holed rib by extrusion

The existence of some holes at the rib enhances the function and value of the tubes. But, the tube with holed rib can not be formed by conventional extrusion. Then, we propose a method that extrudes with a ready made rib. The rib is a machined sheet metal with holes. While the tube is extruded, the rib is fed through a slit of mandrel. Tube and sheet are joined at the same time during extrusion. The mandrel has slit and guide. A guide position h that is a distance from die surface to front edge of the guide is a dominant parameter in this research. When guide position h is controlled, metal flow can be adjusted. We carried out an experiment to clarify the effect of guide position on joining by using A1050. Then, a tensile test clarified that joining strength between tube and rib is 40% of base material. Moreover, flatness was observed in measuring the outside diameter and the inside diameter of the tube.

  • Effect of hardening exponent on tube bending

There are many studies about characteristics of tube bending. But there is no study about the effects of tubular material property on bending. Therefore, we try to examine the effect of material property about hardening exponent on tube bending. Bending radius, strain distribution, springback and flatness of tube are examined on press bending by FEM (finite element method) and experimental results. The results are about the effects of tubular material property such as hardening exponent n. The effect of hardening exponent is clear in the tube bending in the study. The hardening exponent n does not have an effect on springback, thickness strain distributions and flatness ratio at the same bending radius of same tube dimension.   • Improvement of forming limit by rotary nosing with a relieved die

Press nosing or spinning is conventionally used for shrinking the tip diameter. In press nosing, while the forming limit is low, productivity is high. In spinning, although the forming limit is very high, the productivity is very low. The present proposed rotary nosing is an intermediate method that is expected to achieve a higher forming limit than press nosing and realize higher productivity than spinning. In this present research, the forming limit was first examined experimentally and the mechanism was studied by finite element analysis. Based on the results, rotary nosing with a relieved die was proposed. The relieved die consists of three partial cones so that the die geometry is easily cut out using an ordinary lathe. This type of die can be easily and widely applied for industrial use. The effect of the proposed method was numerically evaluated with regard to the pushing force and hoop stress. Finally, the effect of rotary nosing was verified experimentally and the range was clarified where rotary nosing has a higher forming limit than conventional press nosing.

  • Effect of die corner radius on the formability and dimensional accuracy of tube shear bending

The authors have investigated the tube shear bending process of circular tubes experimentally. Moreover, an elastoplastic 3D finite element simulation has been conducted, aimed at clarifying the forming mechanism. Both the experiment and simulation results indicate that, in order to perform successful forming, the value of the applied pushing force on the tube must be appropriate. In this paper, the mechanism of defect generation was clarified. Two failure criteria were introduced and employed to recognize the occurrence of defects in the simulation. The effects of the die corner radius, as the main parameter, on the defect generation of circular A1050 aluminum tubes were investigated both by experiments and numerical simulation. From the results, the formability of tube on dies with different corner radii applying various pushing pressures was clarified. Moreover, the influence of the die radius on the dimensional accuracy of the deformed tube regarding cross-section ovality and thickness changes of the deformed tube was evaluated. The results of this study indicate that, whilst a small bending radius results in high cross-section ovality, increasing the die corner radius raises the wrinkling tendency of the tube. However, the die radius has a small effect on the suitable values of pushing pressure required for a successful shear bending deformation. Moreover, the effect of the die corner radius on the thickness strain of the deformed tube is insignificant.

Tubes with internal ribs have high strength in comparison with those without ribs. These tubes can be used, for example, as structural parts, heat sinks, and impact absorbers. The existence of some holes at ribs enhances the function and value of the tubes. The appropriate positioning of holes at ribs reduces the weight of structural parts without strength reduction. In the case of heat sinks, holes change the fluid flow and would realize effective heat transfer. In this research, a new extrusion method is proposed by authors for manufacturing tubes with holed ribs. A new extrusion method is applied by FEM analysis. Model experiment was carried out based on the results. The method involves the use of a unique mandrel that has a slit along its axis and two guides at the slit exit. A holed sheet is fed through the slit and joined to the inner surface of the tube. In particular, the effect of the guide height is clarified in this study.

The authors have investigated the tube shear bending process experimentally. Moreover, an elasto-plastic 3D finite 14 element simulation has been conducted aiming to analyze the forming process. In this paper, the effects of the initial thickness on the deformation characteristics of the tube shear bending have been investigated both by experiments and numerical simulation. In order to show the validity of simulation, the FEM results of the thickness strains as well as the cross section configurations of the deformed tube have been compared with the experimental ones. The results indicate that under the effect of same pushing pressure, raising the initial thickness, the tube thinning and cross section deformation increase. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.   • Deep drawing of 1050 aluminum sheets using high pressure jet water as lubricant

    Keikinzoku/Journal of Japan Institute of Light Metals, 56, 9, 469-473, Sep. 2006, Lubricant oil is always used to improve or enhance the deep drawing limit and prevent the damage on the surface of cylindrical parts. Therefore, the oil on cylindrical parts must be cleaned by cleaning agent after deep drawing. Not only the cost of lubricant oil and the cleaning is needed, but also the lubricant oil and cleaner affect the environment of the earth. The authors have created the new deep drawing method to prevent the global environment. High pressure jet water is adopted on the new deep drawing instead of the lubricant oil. The water viscosity is low and the water itself is not suitable for lubricant. But the high pressure water jet is compulsorily supplied to the gap between the die and sheet metal, and strong lubricant membrane is produced in the gap. The effects of the deep drawing conditions are experimentally examined on the new deep drawing using high pressure jet water. Therefore the capability and character of the drawing are made clear in this study.

It is essential to put intermediate nodes between adjustable nodes in the method. Using the proposed method, the wall thickness distributions are optimized to realize high-flexural rigidity under the condition that volume is constant. It is revealed that the constraint condition has significant effect on the optimized geometry. When the end of the tube is constrained completely, it is not necessary to increase the thickness at the end. In contrast, when the end is not constrained, the thickness must be increased substantially. Therefore, it is important to take the constraint condition of the tube into consideration for tube geometry optimization. It is also demonstrated quantitatively that the geometry optimization realizes the volume reduction of the tube from the point of flexural rigidity per volume. Moreover, the feasibility to produce the optimized tube is studied using a unique extrusion method with tapered mandrel, which has been proposed by the authors. In this unique method, the wall thickness is controlled arbitrarily by positioning the tapered mandrel during extrusion.

  • Prediction of static strain hardening progress from cementite morphology in hypo-eutectoid carbon steel

    MATERIALS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, MANEY PUBLISHING, 21, 7, 803-812, Jul. 2005, A numerical method is proposed to predict the progress of static strain aging from the cementite morphology in hypo-eutectoid steel in the aging temperature interval from about 473 to 573 K. It is assumed in the approach that strain aging is dominated by the dislocation locking of carbon atoms released during the decomposition of cementite, and that the steel becomes hard in proportion to the amount of diffused carbon atoms in ferrite. Based on scanning electron microscopy images, a finite element mesh was composed, and numerical analyses were carried out in a similar way to heat transfer analysis. As a result, the transfer coefficient of carbon atoms in the ferrite-cementite boundary was estimated compared with experimental results. Moreover, the influence of grain size on strain aging was obtained using the proposed numerical analysis.

For this purpose, tube strain distribution has been illustrated. The theoretical values of strains have been obtained and compared with the simulated results. In order to show the validity of simulation, the FEM results of tube thickness strain have been compared with the experimental ones. The results of this paper clarify the deformation characteristic of tube during shear bending process. Thus, tubular products are effective industrial parts to reduce their weight and their employments volume is increasing. Spinning is a very effective and flexible manufacturing technology for short production runs in a variety of sizes and shapes. Spinning is widely applied to the tube forming corresponding to the increasing usage of the tubular parts. Magnesium and its alloys have many good properties as strength to weight ratio, vibration absorbability and excellent recyclability. It is very difficult to form the magnesium alloy to various shaped products. But, it is easy to form the alloys at high temperature. Therefore, authors have invented new Computer Numerical Control (CNC) spinning machine, which has roller tools with heaters. The heated tools heat and form the magnesium tubes into various shapes by the spinning. The forming possibility of magnesium tube and the properties of formed tube are made clear in this paper.   • Influence of strip materials on behavior of incremental in-plane bending

The strip is bent incrementally by an inclined punch beating. The prototype incremental bending machine uses the numerical control technology and bends the strip flexibly. The strip material is an important condition for in-plane bending. The bending experiments are carried out and some experimental results such as beating force, bending radius, strain distribution are experimentally examined. The forming properties of in-plane bending are clarified in this study. Moreover, the approximate formulas for calculation the bending radius are proposed. Weight saving of structural parts is important in manufacturing field. Aluminum tubes and channels, which are formed by extrusion, are applied to structural parts for reduction of the products' weight. It will have advantage for reducing the weight of the part to vary a cross section of a part which corresponds to the actual load in the axial direction. Extruded tubes' and channels' cross sections are constant in the axial direction by conventional extrusion method. These tubes and channels need other processes to vary the cross section in the axial direction. Thus, applications of these parts are limited by high cost. If the cross section of the part is variable by only extrusion, application of extruded tubes and channels will increase. Therefore, authors have invented and made a new prototype CNC extrusion machine which can control the thickness of rectangular bar. Using the extrusion machine, the experiment has been performed.   • Influence of pitch and cross-sectional ratio of strip of sheet metal on incremental in-plane bending

The cross-sectional ratio of width to thickness of sheet metal and the pitch are important for in-plane bending conditions.   • Effects of indented feed of roller tool on parallel spinning of circular aluminum tube

Spinning is widely applied in the tube forming corresponding to the increased usage of the tubular parts. Authors have built a prototype computer numerically controlled spinning machine which uses the numerical control technology to spin a tube instead of dies in order to improve the tube processing. The indented feed of a roller tool is one of the important spinning conditions. The effects on the spinning force, spinning accuracy and thickness strain are experimentally examined in this study as a function of indented feed of the roller tool on parallel spinning of a circular aluminum tube. The spun tube properties are also made clarified. Results show that with the increment of indented feed of roller tool, the wall-thickness strain and the axial strain becomes steady, the spinning force increases, the diameter accuracy becomes worse, and the surface hardness as well as surface roughness increase. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.   • An experimental study on paraxial spinning of one tube end

The application of spinning technology in tube forming is increasing recently corresponding to the increased usage of the tubular parts. In this study, an experiment of paraxial spinning on one end of circular aluminum tube is performed with the parameters of diametral reduction and spinning pitch. The experimental results show that the thickness strain, the spinning force, the twisting angle and the surface roughness increase as the tube diameter reduces and the spinning pitch increases. The axial strain increases as the tube diameter reduces and the spinning pitch decreases. The diametral accuracy becomes better as tube diameter reduces and the spinning pitch decreases. The forming characteristics of paraxial spinning on one tube end are made clarified in this study. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

    ALUMINUM ALLOYS 2002: THEIR PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES PTS 1-3, TRANS TECH PUBLICATIONS LTD, 396-4, 402, 1635-1640, 2002, Tube is widely applied in the light-weighted industrial products attributing to a high rigidity with regard to its weight. Spinning is suitable for the production of a hollow shape having a surface of revolution, such as tubular products and many other axi-symmetric components. A tube can be formed into various shape of rotational symmetry by the radial and axial feeds of roller tools. Therefore, the radial indented feed and axial feed pitch are important working conditions for tube spinning. An experimental study on parallel spinning of tube has been carried out, and the effects of the radial indented feed and axial feed pitch of roller tool on forming properties of tube spinning, such as force, strain and accuracy are examined in this study. The forming properties of tube spinning are made clarified.

    JOURNAL OF MATERIALS PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA LAUSANNE, 59, 1-2, 10-17, May 1996, Hemming is often used as the last stage of stamping operations. It is used either to improve appearance (to create a smooth edge rather than a razor edge with burrs) or to attach one sheet metal part to another. Hemming is defined as folding of bent or flanged sheet to 180 degrees or more. However, the deformation mechanism, and hence the process, is different and more complex than simple bending and flanging processes. Therefore, very little information is available in research literature, and most of the hemming dies are designed based on trial and error. This paper gives the results obtained from the hemming experiments that were conducted at the Engineering Research Center for Net Shape Manufacturing (ERC/NSM) by using Aluminum Alloy 1050.

If the thickness of the sheet metal is less than 0.1mm, the clearance between the punch and die has to be less than 0.005mm. As the clearance decreases, the punches and dies tend to suffer damage and wear away, and the extreme accuracy of the installation between punches and dies is necessary. As the hole diameter becomes smaller,the punch tend to be broken because of the reduction of punch rigidity. We have studied a new punching method for the thin sheet metal using ultrahigh pressure gas without punch. In this paper, the punching process of circular holes for the sheet is discussed experimentally. The workpieces are thin metal sheets of aluminum and copper. The thicknesses are 0.05 and 0.10mm, and the diameters of the holes range from 1.0mm to 5.0mm. The punching mechanism was clearly explained. The prediction of the minimum pressure required to punch the holes of given sizes could be calculated according to the sheet thicknesses and mechanical properties. The predicted pressure for punching agree well with experimental results for the hole sizes. The cut edge of punched holes have a large shear droop and small fracture surface with a good degree of accuracy in size. The diameters of punched holes are a little small for dies diameters. The differences between punched and dies diameters are about 0.025mm in spite of the material, thickness and hole diameters. The punching of the thin sheet metal was worked easily with high accuracy by our newly invented punchless punching method using ultrahigh pressure gas.

  • EFFECTS OF VARIOUS WORKING-CONDITIONS ON TUBE BULGING BY ELECTROMAGNETIC FORMING

    JOURNAL OF MATERIALS PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA LAUSANNE, 48, 1-4, 113-121, Jan. 1995, Electromagnetic forming is one kind of plastic working, called high-energy-rate forming method. There are two types of electromagnetic forming. One is called the solenoidal coil method[1], and other is called as the direct electrode contact method[2] in which the discharge current flows directly through the workpiece. The tube bulging using solenoidal coil has been described in many papers[3,5], in the previous papers, the influence of the magnetic field and skin depth and the optimum working conditions have not been investigated.
    In the electromagnetic forming, tubular bulging depends on the working conditions. For example, the tube can hardly be formed, when the capacitor bank is highly charged even through a large current flows into the forming toil. In this paper, considering the influence of changing of the magnetic field and skin depth on the forming tube, the magnetic pressure is deviated. Using the magnetic pressure, the effects of changing the working conditions such as the capacity of capacitor bank, the length of solenoidal coil were analytically and experimentally investigated for the electromagnetic forming process and the forming efficiency.

  • Influence of thickness on punchless punching of thin sheet pure aluminum by ultrahigh pressure gas for circular hole

In this paper, we discuss experimentally the influence of the thickness of workpieces for the punching process of circular holes. The workpieces are sheets of aluminum, and the thicknesses are 0.3-0.8mm. The diameter of hole of dies ranges from 1.0 to 15.0mm. The punching mechanism is clearly explained. The minimum pressure required to punch the holes of given sizes could be predicted from thickness and mechanical properties of the sheet. The edge of punched holes has a large shear droop and small fracture surface. The diameter of punched holes is slightly smaller than that of dies diameters. These points are same to the results of thinner workpieces. But burrs are occurred for the workpieces over 0.6mm on thickness.     Journal of The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 58, 554, 272-3146, 1992, A method of electromagnetic tube bulging by direct electrode contact is studied. The magnetic pressure is produced by a huge impactive electric current which passes through the electrode contact and the tube. The current is generated by the transient phenomenon of discharge on the condenser bank. An analysis of tube bulging is made using the finite-element method, and a formulation of the finite-element method based on the axisymmetrical membrane shell theory is developed. Impulsive magnetic pressure is assumed as an internal pressure load. The acceleration, velocity and displacement, and the (final profile and strain distribution are given. These agree approximately with experimental values.
