  • Active RFID Attached Object Clustering Method with New Evaluation Criterion for Finding Lost Objects

We have studied a novel approach to finding lost objects using active RFID. We hypothesize that users can deduce the location of a lost object from information about surrounding objects in an environment where RFID tags are attached to all personal belongings. To help find lost objects fromthe proximity between RFID tags, the system calculates the proximity between pairs of RFID tags from the RSSI series and estimates the groups of objects in the neighborhood. We developed a method for calculating the proximity of the lost object to those around it using a distance function between RSSI series and estimating the group by hierarchical clustering. There is no method to evaluate whether a combination is suitable for application purposes directly. Presently, different combinations of distance functions and clustering algorithms yield different clustering results. Thus, we propose the number of nearest neighbor candidates (NNNC) as the criterion to evaluate the clustering results. The simulation results show that the NNNC is an appropriate evaluation criterion for our system because it is able to exhaustively evaluate the combination of distance functions and clustering algorithms.

  • Remote implementation of GNU radio-based SDR development environment

    Proceedings - Asia-Pacific Conference on Communications, APCC 2016, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 355-360, 03 Oct. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Software-defined radio (SDR) is used in several areas, such as the verification and implementation of radio prototypes. The SDR environment is generally configured with an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a personal computer (PC). However, since ADCs and PCs are fixed configurations, reconfigurations are needed in order to respond to different data sources and computing environments when the radio protocol or SDR are indefinite. To enable this reconfiguration, we present a cloud platform that has scalable computing resources and data sources deployed in a wide area, using an existing SDR development environment. In order to apply the existing SDR development environment to the cloud platform, UI separation and data management are required. In this manuscript, we implement an SDR environment for many unspecified users through UI separation by selecting the GNU Radio Companion (GRC) as the platform. We focused on compatibility and flexibility with regard to the configuration, in order to allow the user to adjust the resources consumed by the PC. The results show that one particular implementation of the remote SDR execution and development is suitable. In addition, we confirmed the compatibility with GRC in terms of user skills and software assets, and achieved distributed processing to allocate resources between the client and cloud according to the user's discretion, by dividing the processing of the SDR on the basis of the function unit.

Since the mutual interference among subcarriers is unevenly distributed over the frequency band, careless allocations of subcarrier frequencies may result in degraded network performance and inefficient use of the frequency resource. In this paper, we examine four subcarrier frequency allocation schemes using MATLAB numerical simulations. The four schemes are evaluated in terms of the communication capacity and access fairness among sensor RF tags. We found that the subcarrier allocation scheme plays an important role in multiple subcarrier communication and can improves the communication capacity by 35%.

    2015 3RD IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MOBILE CLOUD COMPUTING, SERVICES, AND ENGINEERING (MOBILECLOUD 2015), IEEE, 163-168, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Rich participatory sensing applications by smart-phones are demonstrating the possibility of useful applications with numerous stationary sensors as well as with smartphones. Electricity consumption of stationary sensors seriously affects their usability and maintenance cost so that many mutually incompatible wireless devices and protocols have been developed for each those different conditions. It is desirable for devices with any different protocol to share the network infrastructure, preserve sensing data, and jointly utilize the data. We proposed an "Appliance-defined ubiquitous network" (ADUN) that, based on user demands, can distribute sampled RF data streams over the Internet to software-defined radio receivers in cloud data centers. One of the goals of ADUN is to allow users to be able to seek information regarding the radio space of any bandwidth, frequency, place, time, and date. An RF recorder is necessary to distribute past RF data, and should be able to record as broad an RF data stream for as long as needed. In this paper, we detail the basic concepts of RF recorder for ADUN and the results of a study that applies the Btrfs function in Linux to compress and store RF data to distribute or mine an RF signal through time-shifting. The experimental results indicate that the pipeline parallelism of Linux increases the storage writing throughput of high-bitrate RF data streams with some degree of redundancy, though the loss in computation power for RF data compression slows down the storage writing. The RF data compression rate is calculated by the size of the RF data, the chunk size in chunking, and variance in the radio space information according to the number of signals to be received.

  • A Resource Analysis of Radio Space Distribution for the Wide-Area Virtualization of Wireless Transceivers

In order to enable wide-area virtualization of wireless transceivers, the authors have developed a mechanism to deliver the radio space information which is quantized broadband radio wave information including the radio signals to the transceivers. Delivery mechanism consists of a distribution server which distributes radio space corresponding to the request of the client such as the center frequency and the bandwidth and a client which uses the radio space information. Accumulation of the distribution servers which deliver radio space information simultaneously to a large number of clients will contribute to build an infrastructure for any clients ubiquitously distributed over the globe. In this paper, scale-out architecture of a distribution server is proposed to deliver unlimitedly broadband radio space information to unlimited number of clients. Experimental implementation indicates the architecture to be a scale-out solution, while the number of clients is restricted by the computer resources of the distribution server. The band pass filter processing for individual client in the distribution server consumes the dominant part of the processing power, and the number of CPU cores is the upper limit of clients supportable for the distribution server in the current operating system implementation. The logical increase of the number of CPU cores by hardware multithreading does not contribute to relax this limit. We also discuss the guidance architecture or building server derived from these conclusions.

To facilitate high reusability of the various data stored on the platform, the platform's search function must be able to locate all data useful to a particular application. We refer to this cross-schema-manner search as a schema-less search. We have proposed a tree-structured indexing method, called UBI-Tree, for efficient schema-less searches. UBI-Tree predicts usage frequencies of each query based on characteristics of stored data. Moreover, UBI-Tree classifies incoming data to improve the search performance of frequently used queries. One disadvantage of the conventional UBI-Tree is decreased search performance as a result of differences between predicted and actual frequencies. Therefore, we propose a new method to improve search performance. This method utilizes the query history and is based on the real search load. We show experimentally that our proposed method improves the average latency and throughput of search processes.

  • Personalized Clothing-Recommendation System based on a Modified Bayesian Network

Online shopping websites use recommendation systems to suggest items that users might be interested in. Such systems make recommendations to a user on the basis of other users' behavior, under the assumption that all users behave similarly; personal preferences are not captured. However, a clothing-recommendation system should make recommendations on selections of personal items based on personal preferences rather than other users' behavior, since it is rare to find other users that own the same articles of clothing as the target user. The proposed system makes recommendations that are particularly suitable to a user based on the user's personal preference, history of clothing items and the user's evaluations of previous system recommendations. The experimental results reveal that the system can in most cases recommend more suitable combinations of clothing items than can existing systems under the same conditions.

  • A Ubiquitous wireless network architecture and its impact on optical networks

This is because, if the current growth rate is maintained, the Internet will have expanded 100-1000 times. Networked wireless appliances, such as radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and wireless sensors, are expected to greatly outnumber PCs. Such exponential changes in network capacity and terminals may lead to the emergence of post-IP networks. This paper introduces a candidate for a post-IP network called the "appliance defined ubiquitous network (ADUN)", which supports niche ubiquitous network applications for affordable implementation. The ADUN will demand optical networks that can transport 10-100 Gbps streams, each of which requires almost the full transmission capacity of one wavelength or a wavelength group. This paper discusses directions for the functional enhancement of optical network architecture, dynamically using wavelengths for grid computing, so as to support the ADUN. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Radio space information rather than individual appliance signals is carried over the ADUN in the form of a stream with strong privacy/security control. It should be noted that this is different from the architectural principles of the Internet. We discuss a network-appliance interface that is sustainable over a long period, and show that the ADUN overhead will be within the scope of the broadband network in the near future.

  • Deriving protocols from message sequence charts in a communicating processes model

Message sequence charts (MSCs) are used for the derivation inputs. MSCs are graphical representations of traces of protocols and are suitable for defining requirements. Since an MSC usually covers only a partial behavior, several mechanisms for composing a large number of MSCs from element MSCs have been proposed. These mechanisms, however, are not adequate: Either their input language for MSCs is not powerful enough, or they need some information on protocol specifications (i.e., implementation specifications). This paper proposes the use of regular expressions over MSCs to fully define protocols. The proposed language is powerful enough to describe protocols in the communicating processes model. A derivation algorithm based on a finite automata construction algorithm that accept sets expressed by regular expressions is presented. Because the derived protocols sometimes include unrequired behavior, an algorithm for detecting unrequired behavior is also presented.

Message sequences, however, are used only to provide a preliminary to the full definition of systems. This paper proposes a technique for applying formal message sequence specifications to this full definition. The technique supports automatic transformation of message sequence descriptions into communicating process descriptions that implement the sequences. It also supports hierarchial verification of protocols in the message sequences and process descriptions. Both a language for message sequence description, SAL, and a design support environment, SDE, have been developed based on the proposed technique. To collectively and hierarchically describe message sequences, SAL can compose message sequences from message sequence elements. By adding SAL descriptions, SDE supports the incremental specification and development of communications software: consistency between the added sequences and existing software is verified, and the existing software is automatically updated. This support especially contributes to the efficient maintenance of communications software. The feasibility and usefulness of the proposed technique is demonstrated by experimental application of SDE to PBX.
