The output power and repetition rate are 420 mW and 95 MHz, respectively.

  • Kerr-lens mode-locked Tm3+:Sc2O3 single-crystal laser in-band pumped by an Er:Yb fiber MOPA at 1611 nm

    OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 42, 16, 3185-3188, Aug. 2017, Peer-reviwed, We demonstrate a Kerr-lens mode-locked Tm3+:Sc2O3 single-crystal laser in-band pumped by an Er3+:Yb3+ fiber master oscillator power amplifier at 1611 nm. Pulses as short as 166 fs with an average output power of 440 mW are obtained. The spectral bandwidth and center wavelength are 29.3 and 2124 nm, respectively. At a longer pulse duration of 298 fs, we obtain 1 W of average output power. The repetition rate is 95 MHz, and the conversion efficiency against the absorbed pump power is as high as 47%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Kerr-lens modelocked Tm3+-doped solid state laser. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

The MOPA consists of a DFB laser diode seed source and three amplifier stages with three different gain fibers. The first amplifier stage employed an Er doped fiber and the second and third amplifier stages employed Er: Yb co-doped fibers. The maximum output power was 8 W. Linewidth of 25 MHz and polarization extinction ratio of 28 dB was obtained. At the maximum output power, no ASE component around 1.55 mu m or 1 mu m was observed. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

  • Tunable noise-like pulse generation in mode-locked Tm fiber laser with a SESAM

A tuning range of 1895-1942 nm, while keeping the spectral bandwidth of 10-19 nm under NLP mode-locked operation, was obtained by a tunable filter based on chromatic dispersion of telescope lenses. At the center wavelength of 1928 nm, the maximum output power of 195 mW with the spectral bandwidth of 18.9 nm was obtained. The repetition rate was 20.5 MHz and the corresponding pulse energy was 9.5 nJ. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a tunable NLP mode-locked laser based on chromatic dispersion of a lens system. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

    OPTICS LETTERS, OPTICAL SOC AMER, 41, 10, 2197-2200, May 2016, Peer-reviwed, Short wavelength operation (1650-1800 nm) of silica-based thulium-doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs) is investigated. We report the first demonstration of in-band diode-pumped silica-based TDFAs working in the 1700-1800 nm waveband. Up to 29 dB of small-signal gain is achieved in this spectral region, with an operation wavelength accessible by diode pumping as short as 1710 nm. Further gain extension toward shorter wavelengths is realized in a fiber laser pumped configuration. A silica-based TDFA working in the 1650-1700 nm range with up to 29 dB small-signal gain and noise figure as low as 6.5 dB is presented.

The analysis includes a special case in which the spectral bandwidth of the short pulse is larger than the fluorescence bandwidth of the gain material. The relationship between the available shortest pulse duration and modulation depth for a standard bulk and thin disk laser geometries with several gain materials are shown. The characteristic phenomena observed in our previous Kerr-lens mode-locked laser experiments were reproduced in the simulation. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

  • Ultra-short wavelength operation of a thulium fibre laser in the 1660-1750 nm wavelength band

Through use of core pumping and high feedback efficiency wavelength selection, a continuously-tunable fibre laser source operating from 1660 nm to 1720 nm is demonstrated in a silica host. We discuss the range of applications within this important wavelength band such as polymer materials processing and medical applications targeting characteristic C-H bond resonance peaks. As a demonstration of the power scalability of thulium fibre lasers in this band, fixed wavelength operation at 1726 nm with output power up 12.6 W and with slope efficiency >60% is also shown.   • High resolution Fourier domain Optical Coherence Tomography at 2 microns for painted objects

    OPTICS FOR ARTS, ARCHITECTURE, AND ARCHAEOLOGY V, SPIE-INT SOC OPTICAL ENGINEERING, 9527, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Optical Coherence Tomography has been successfully applied to the non-invasive imaging of subsurface microstructure of a variety of materials from biological tissues to painted objects of art. One of the limitations of the technique is the low depth of penetration due to the strong scattering and absorption in the material. Previous studies found that for paint materials, the optimum window for large depth of penetration is around 2.2 microns. This is also true for many other materials with low water content. We have previously demonstrated OCT systems in this wavelength regime for imaging with improved depth of penetration. In this paper, we present an improved 2 micron high resolution Fourier domain OCT system using a broadband supercontinuum source. The system achieved a depth resolution of 9 microns in air (or 6 microns in paint or any polymer).

  • Ultra-broadband wavelength-swept Tm-doped fiber laser using wavelength-combined gain stages

The fiber gain stages were tailored to provide emission in complementary bands with external wavelength-dependent feedback cavities sharing a common rotating polygon mirror for wavelength scanning. The wavelength-swept laser outputs from the fiber gain elements were spectrally combined by means of a dichroic mirror and yielded over 500 mW of output with a scanning range from similar to 1740 nm to similar to 2070 nm for a scanning frequency of similar to 340 Hz.   • Wavelength-swept Tm-doped fiber laser operating in the two-micron wavelength band

The laser yielded a wavelength swept output in a step-wise fashion with each laser pulse separated from the previous pulse by a frequency interval equal to the free-spectral-range of the etalon and with an instantaneous linewidth of <0.05 nm. Scanning ranges from 1905 nm to 2049 nm for a cladding-pumping laser configuration, and from 1768 nm to 1956 nm for a core-pumping laser configuration were achieved at average output powers up to similar to 1 W. However, a significant limitation is the low penetration depth of OCT in paint because of the high opacity of paint due to either scattering or absorption. It has been shown that the optimum spectral window for OCT imaging of paint layers is around 2.2 mu m in wavelength. In this paper, we demonstrate a 1950nm OCT for imaging painted objects using a superfluorescent fiber source at low power.

In CW laser operation, an output power of 70 W with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 57.4% was achieved. A higher slope efficiency of 70% was also obtained with a 50-W pump laser diode with more suitable emission characteristics. In mode-locked laser operation, pulses as short as 547 fs with an average power of 7.4 W were obtained. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high power CW and mode-locked laser operation based on Yb3+:Y2O3 ceramic thin disks. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

All recorded Raman induced laser wavelengths are identified and attributed to their SRS-promoting vibration modes. Brief review of nonlinear-laser processes in non-centrosymmetric phosphates of KH2PO4-family and some physical properties of NH4H2PO4 and ND4D2PO4 are given as well.

Broadband their multi-wavelength Stokes and anti-Stokes combs with the extension of 10475 cm(-1) (for Sc2O3) and 8232 cm(-1) (for Lu2O3) were recorded as well.

The maximum output power is 220 mW at an absorbed pump power of 2.4 W with a diffraction-limited beam quality (M2 < 1.1). Almost transform-limited 357 fs pulses at the center wavelength of 1033.5 nm with a maximum average power of 352 mW are obtained. The efficiency against the absorbed pump power is as high as 32% by use of a laser-diode pumping and the repetition rate is 97 MHz. This is the first demonstration of a diode-pumped mode-locked Yb3+:Lu2O3 ceramic laser to our knowledge. (C) 2006 Optical Society of America.

    Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe - Technical Digest, CA-1-2, 2005, Peer-reviwed, Since 1998, it has been possible to fabricate highly transparent ceramics for solid-state lasers by a vacuum sintering technique and nanocrystalline technology. As a laser host, RE2O3 (RE = Y, Sc, and Lu), which is a C-type sesquioxide, has been a promising solid-state laser material because it has good thermal, chemical, optical, and mechanical properties. It is, however, difficult to make a RE2O3 single crystal because of to its high meting temperature (>
    2400°C). Recently, Yb-doped lasers are very attractive because they have low quantum defect, and broad absorption and emission spectra [1]. We have been demonstrating several kinds of Yb-doped lasers with the highly transparent ceramics [2]. An LD-pumped tunable ceramic laser was demonstrated with an uncoated 5 at.%Yb3+:Y 2O3 ceramics. Schematic diagram of the laser experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1 (a). A 976-nm fiber coupled LD was used for zero-phone-line pumping, and the pumping beam was focused into the 5 at.%Yb 3+:Y2O3 ceramics with two lenses. An SF18 equilateral prism was used as a dispersive device, and the output coupler OC had T = 3% coating at 1030 nm. The experimental result is shown in Fig. 1 (b). We achieved the tunable ceramic laser in two regions, 1034-1050 and 1071-1078 nm wavelength, with pumping power of 3.9 W. The other kinds of Yb-doped tunable ceramic lasers will be reported. © 2005 IEEE.

  • In-band励起を用いた高性能2μm帯短パルスTm添加固体レーザー光源の研究

    Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), We have developed a high power highly efficient Kerr-lens mode-locked Tm doped sesquioxides laser in-band pumped by 1610 nm high power fiber laser. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the Kerr-lens mode-locked solid state laser at the wavelength range of 2μm. The pulses as short as 115 fs and the average power as high as 1 W were achieved. Comparison with prior mode-locked 2 μm solid state laser works, it has the third shortest pulse duration and an order higher average power., 16K17526
