- Parent-child skin carotenoid level and vegetable intake relationships in users of children’s cafeterias in Japan

Studies on the relationship between parental and child dietary intakes are limited in Asian populations. Here, we examined parent-child relationships in skin carotenoid levels and vegetable intake in a Japanese community.
Methods
The study participants were 58 children aged 6–15 years and 39 of their guardians (parents) using children’s cafeterias. Skin carotenoid levels were measured using the Veggie Meter®, and the number of vegetable dishes (equivalent to a serving of 70 g) was evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire.
Results
The mean (standard deviation; SD) skin carotenoid levels were 366.8 (74.0) in children and 315.0 (101.4) in parents. The partial correlation coefficient between parents’ and children’s skin carotenoid levels, adjusting for cafeteria, sex, parental dietary supplement use, and household financial status, was 0.38 (P = 0.02); after adjustment for smoking status and BMI, the positive correlation was attenuated (r = 0.25, P = 0.14). A positive correlation was observed between parents’ and children’s vegetable dish intake (r = 0.30, P = 0.02).
Conclusion
This cross-sectional study identified a positive correlation between parent-child intake of vegetable dishes, accounting for potential confounders. However, the positive correlation observed between parent-child skin carotenoid levels may have been attenuated by internal factors such as smoking and obesity.
研究論文(学術雑誌) - Impact of Intergenerational Shokuiku (Food and Nutrition Education) Programs on Alleviating Loneliness in Japanese Communities across Ages

Nutrients, MDPI AG, 16巻, 11号, 掲載ページ 1661-1661, 出版日 2024年05月28日, As loneliness is a risk factor for mental and physical health problems in various age groups, this study aimed to explore the impact of the intergenerational Shokuiku (food and nutrition education) program (IGSP) on loneliness in a Japanese community. This single-arm intervention study conducted between 2022 and 2023 included children (n = 21), guardians (n = 16), university students (n = 3), and older adults (n = 6). The IGSP was a one-day program that included participants making and eating their own bread, butter, and sorbet. Loneliness was measured using the Five-item Loneliness Scale for Children (Five-LSC; Japanese) and the three-item UCLA Loneliness Scale (Japanese; for adults) with other direct questions. Social capital, including civic participation, social cohesion, and reciprocity, was assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. The Five-LSC score significantly decreased post-intervention (p = 0.04). There was a significant increase in adults who reported not feeling lonely (p = 0.001). However, the UCLA Loneliness Scale scores did not show any significant changes. A positive change in social cohesion, including community contribution (p = 0.001) and attachment (p = 0.002), was observed among adults. This study suggests that IGSPs have a positive impact on loneliness in children and a partly positive one in adults. These findings emphasize the potential of intergenerational programs to reduce loneliness in communities.

In 2022, we launched a community-based intervention trial (the Chofu-Digital-Choju Movement). This initiative centered on fostering in-person and online social connections to enhance the subjective well-being of older adults. This paper describes the study design and baseline survey. This quasi-experimental study involved community-dwelling older adults aged 65–84 years in Chofu City, Tokyo, Japan. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 3742 residents (1681 men and 2061 women), and a baseline survey was conducted in January 2022. We assessed subjective well-being (primary outcome); psychosocial, physical, and dietary factors; and the use of information and communication technology variables (secondary outcomes) among the participants. After the intervention involving online classes, community hubs, and community events, a 2-year follow-up survey will be conducted to evaluate the effects of the intervention, comparing the intervention group (participants) with the control group (non-participants). We received 2503 questionnaires (66.9% response rate); of these, the analysis included 2343 questionnaires (62.6% valid response rate; mean age, 74.4 (standard deviation, 5.4) years; 43.7% male). The mean subjective well-being score was 7.2 (standard deviation, 1.9). This study will contribute to the development of a prototype subjective well-being strategy for older adults.
研究論文(学術雑誌) - The Amount of Light to Vigorous Physical Activity (Met’s-Hours/Day) in Children with and without Down Syndrome Attending Elementary School in Japan

Therefore, their attainment rate of physical activity guidelines is low, and guidelines alone may not be sufficient in assessing the amount of physical activity in children with DS. Compared with normal children (NC) of the same grade, light physical activity (LPA) must be considered while assessing physical activity of children with DS, owing to muscle hypotonia. This study included 69 children with DS and 68 NC in grades 4–6 attending elementary school in Japan. The measurements for physical characteristics included age, height, weight, and body mass index. Physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer, which indicated physical activity volume. Children with DS had less moderate-to-vigorous physical activity duration (DS: 53.1 min/day, NC: 65.0 min/day; p < 0.001) but significantly longer LPA duration (DS: 376.4 min/day, NC: 287.7 min/day; p < 0.001) than NC. Conversely, the amount of light to vigorous physical activity (Met’s-hours/day) was greater in children with DS (DS: 16.0 Met’s-hours/day, NC: 14.4 Met’s-hours/day; p = 0.037). In children with DS with muscular hypotonia, vigorous physical activity is challenging, but LPA is feasible. Developing and validating educational programs that promote physical activity with intensity level depending on individual’s physical characteristic are warranted.

Scientific reports, 12巻, 1号, 掲載ページ 11312-11312, 出版日 2022年07月04日, 国際誌, This study aimed to annually examine anthropometric characteristics and physical activity (PA) among children transitioning from fourth grade (9-10 years of age) to eighth grade (13-14 years of age) in Japan. The participants' (n = 63) age, grade, sex, weight, height, and weight status were recorded at baseline. Accelerometry assessments were performed annually following established protocols. Time spent on activities requiring ≥ 3 metabolic equivalents (METs), 1.6-2.9 METs, and ≤ 1.5 METs were defined as moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA), light PA (LPA), and sedentary behavior (SB), respectively. Two linear mixed models were used to examine whether MVPA, LPA, and SB min/day changed over time. Fifty-five participants provided complete data. A significant, nonlinear, longitudinal decline in MVPA, an increase in SB, and a linear decline in LPA were observed. Changes in MVPA and SB were accelerated in seventh grade (12-13 years of age). Male sex and maintenance of normal weight status were associated with higher MVPA levels. Changes in LPA and SB were not associated with sex or weight status. During the transition period from primary to secondary school, MVPA and SB showed nonlinear accelerations. Sex and normal weight were associated with more time spent performing MVPA.

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 128巻, 3号, 掲載ページ 1169-1182, 出版日 2021年, 査読付, 国際誌, Virtual reality (VR) technology combined with exercise, called VR exercise, is believed to have beneficial effects on mood; but VR factors contributing to improved mood remain ambiguous. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of visual flow speed on psychophysiological responses (i.e., physiological responses, ratings of perceived exertion or RPE, and mood) to immersive VR exercise in a simulated natural environment. Eighteen male participants (Mage =23.1, SD = 1.9 years) cycled an ergometer at 80 watts for 5 minutes on three separate occasions while watching a first-person VR movie through VR goggles at three different speeds of visual flow, corresponding to 7.5 km.h-1, 15 km.h-1, and 22.5 km.h-1. The order of the three speeds was randomized in a counterbalanced design. We measured heart rate, oxygen uptake, minute ventilation, respiratory rate, and cadence during the exercise, and we recorded ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and mood immediately after the exercise. We evaluated mood states with the Two-Dimensional Mood Scale. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance or the Friedman test revealed no significant effects on any physiological variables, RPE or cadence as a result of altered visual flow speed during VR exercise (p > .05). However, speed of visual flow significantly influenced participant ratings of Vitality (p = 0.01) and Pleasure (p = 0.02), with the faster speed resulting in a more positive mood state. As these findings showed that VR exercise with faster visual flow induced positive mood states, we recommend faster visual flow to induce better mood states in VR exercise.

However, the validity of estimating the level of PA or PA energy expenditure (PAEE) for general consumers using wearable devices has not been sufficiently established.Objective: We examined the validity of 12 wearable devices for determining PAEE during 1 standardized day in a metabolic chamber and 15 free-living days using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method.Methods: A total of 19 healthy adults aged 21 to 50 years (9 men and 10 women) participated in this study. They followed a standardized PA protocol in a metabolic chamber for an entire day while simultaneously wearing 12 wearable devices: 5 devices on the waist, 5 on the wrist, and 2 placed in the pocket. In addition, they spent their daily lives wearing 12 wearable devices under free-living conditions while being subjected to the DLW method for 15 days. The PAEE criterion was calculated by subtracting the basal metabolic rate measured by the metabolic chamber and 0.1 x total energy expenditure (TEE) from lEE. The TEE was obtained by the metabolic chamber and DLW methods. The PAEE values of wearable devices were also extracted or calculated from each mobile phone app or website. The Dunnett test and Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients were used to examine the variables estimated by wearable devices.Results: On the standardized day, the PAEE estimated using the metabolic chamber (PAEEcha) was 528.8 +/- 149.4 kcal/day. The PAEEs of all devices except the TANITA AM-160 (513.8 +/- 135.0 kcal/day; P>.05), SUZUKEN Lifecorder EX (519.3 +/- 89.3 kcal/day; P>.05), and Panasonic Actimarker (545.9 +/- 141.7 kcal/day; P>.05) were significantly different from the PAEEcha. None of the devices was correlated with PAEEcha according to both Pearson (r=-.13 to .37) and Spearman (rho=-.25 to .46) correlation tests. During the 15 free-living days, the PAEE estimated by DLW (PAEEdlw) was 728.0 +/- 162.7 kcal/day. PAEE values of all devices except the Omron Active style Pro (716.2 +/- 159.0 kcal/day; P>.05) and Omron CaloriScan (707.5 +/- 172.7 kcal/day; P>.05) were significantly underestimated. Only 2 devices, the Omron Active style Pro (r=.46; P=.045) and Panasonic Actimarker (r=.48; P=.04), had significant positive correlations with PAEEdlw according to Pearson tests. In addition, 3 devices, the TANITA AM-160 (rho=.50; P=.03), Omron CaloriScan (rho=.48; P=.04), and Omron Active style Pro (rho=.48; P=.04), could be ranked in PAEEdlw.Conclusions: Most wearable devices do not provide comparable PAEE estimates when using gold standard methods during 1 standardized day or 15 free-living days. Continuous development and evaluations of these wearable devices are needed for better estimations of PAEE.

The participants in the present study were 12 well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 10 controls, aged 40-75 years, with a body mass index <30 kg/m2 . Total energy expenditure under free-living conditions was assessed using the doubly labeled water method, and physical activity was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. Dietary intake was assessed using a self-recorded food intake diary during the measurement period. Participants were instructed to record their dietary intake over 3 days, including 2 weekdays. Total energy expenditure was not significantly different between the groups (P = 0.153), nor were energy (P = 0.969) or macronutrient intakes. In conclusion, when age and body mass index are matched, total energy expenditure and self-reported energy intake are not significantly different between type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and healthy controls.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether questioning technique influences test-retest reliability and criterion validity of the WSWQ.
Methods: Sixty-five Japanese workers completed each version of the WSWQ in random order. Both questionnaires assessed quantities of time spent sitting or walking (including standing) during work time, non-working time on a workday, and anytime on a non-workday. Participants wore the thigh-worn inclinometer (activPAL) as criterion measure. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and Spearman's. were used for the analyses.
Results: For all three domains, values of reliability and validity with the P-method tended to be higher than with the T-method: ICC values ranged from 0.48-0.85 for the T-method and from 0.71-0.85 for the P-method; Spearman's. values ranged from 0.25-0.58 for the T-method and from 0.42-0.65 for the P-method. The validities with both methods on a workday (0.51-0.58 for the T-method and 0.56-0.65 for the P-method) were higher than validities on a non-workday (0.25-0.45 for the T-method and 0.42-0.60 for the P-method). In post-survey interviews, 48 participants (77%) chose the P-method as their preferred questioning style.
Conclusions: The study revealed that the P-method WSWQ had better reliability, validity, and ease of answering than the T-method, suggesting that the P-method can improve properties of the WSWQ and consequently advance the quality of epidemiological surveys in this field.

Physiological reports, 3巻, 5号, 掲載ページ e12410, 出版日 2015年05月, 査読付, 国際誌, We developed a novel method for computing diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) in a respiratory chamber and evaluated the validity and reproducibility of the method. We hypothesized that DIT may be calculated as the difference between postprandial energy expenditure (EE) and estimated EE (sum of basal metabolic rate and physical activity (PA)-related EE). The estimated EE was derived from the regression equation between EE from respiration and PA intensity in the fasting state. It may be possible to evaluate the time course of DIT using this novel technique. In a validity study, we examined whether DIT became zero (theoretical value) for 6 h of fasting in 11 subjects. The mean value of DIT calculated by the novel and traditional methods was 22.4 ± 13.4 and 3.4 ± 31.8 kcal/6 h, respectively. In the reproducibility study, 15 adult subjects lived in the respiratory chamber for over 24 h on two occasions. The DIT over 15 h of postprandial wake time was calculated. There were no significant differences in the mean values of DIT between the two test days. The within-subject day-to-day coefficient of variation for calculated DIT with the novel and traditional methods was approximately 35% and 25%, respectively. The novel method did not have superior reproducibility compared with that of the traditional method. However when comparing the smaller variation in the fasting state than the theoretical value (zero), the novel method may be better for evaluating interindividual differences in DIT than the traditional method and also has the ability to evaluate the time-course.

日本語 - Prediction Models Discriminating between Nonlocomotive and Locomotive Activities in Children Using a Triaxial Accelerometer with a Gravity-removal Physical Activity Classification Algorithm

PLOS ONE, PUBLIC LIBRARY SCIENCE, 9巻, 4号, 掲載ページ e94940, 出版日 2014年04月, 査読付, The aims of our study were to examine whether a gravity-removal physical activity classification algorithm (GRPACA) is applicable for discrimination between nonlocomotive and locomotive activities for various physical activities (PAs) of children and to prove that this approach improves the estimation accuracy of a prediction model for children using an accelerometer. Japanese children (42 boys and 26 girls) attending primary school were invited to participate in this study. We used a triaxial accelerometer with a sampling interval of 32 Hz and within a measurement range of 66 G. Participants were asked to perform 6 nonlocomotive and 5 locomotive activities. We measured raw synthetic acceleration with the triaxial accelerometer and monitored oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production during each activity with the Douglas bag method. In addition, the resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured with the subject sitting on a chair to calculate metabolic equivalents (METs). When the ratio of unfiltered synthetic acceleration (USA) and filtered synthetic acceleration (FSA) was 1.12, the rate of correct discrimination between nonlocomotive and locomotive activities was excellent, at 99.1% on average. As a result, a strong linear relationship was found for both nonlocomotive (METs = 0.013 x synthetic acceleration + 1.220, R-2 = 0.772) and locomotive (METs = 0.0056 x synthetic acceleration + 0.944, R-2 = 0.880) activities, except for climbing down and up. The mean differences between the values predicted by our model and measured METs were 20.50 to 0.23 for moderate to vigorous intensity (< 3.5 METs) PAs like running, ball throwing and washing the floor, which were regarded as unpredictable PAs. In addition, the difference was within 0.25 METs for sedentary to mild moderate PAs (< 3.5 METs). Our specific calibration model that discriminates between nonlocomotive and locomotive activities for children can be useful to evaluate the sedentary to vigorous PAs intensity of both nonlocomotive and locomotive activities.

The subjects were grouped into quartiles of BMI and body fat percentage (%BF). The number of steps walked each day and the duration of light- to vigorous-intensity physical activity were assessed by an accelerometer over the same period of time as for the doubly labelled water experiment. The results showed that BMI negatively correlated with the number of steps and time spent in moderate-intensity physical activity, whereas %BF showed a negative relationship with physical activity-related energy expenditure (PAEE)/body weight (BW) and physical activity level. The analysis of data using %BF quartiles revealed that PAEE/BW decreased from the second quartile in which the BMI was <25kg/m(2). These observations are similar to those reported in our previous study in Japanese adult women. These cross-sectional studies cannot prove causality, and that obesity causes physical inactivity may be the case. However, the results of the present study provide information regarding which physical activity variables should be used in longitudinal studies.

体力科学, 一般社団法人日本体力医学会, 63巻, 3号, 掲載ページ 323-331, 出版日 2014年, 査読付, This study sought to examine the potential relationships of physical education (PE) participation at preschool and sports club (SC) participation out of school and daily physical activity (PA) measured objectively using a triaxial accelerometer, with physical fitness in preschool children. Physical fitness testing was used to measure both health-related and skill-related parameters of fitness in 191 Japanese preschoolers in the Kanto region (94 boys and 97 girls, 5.6 ± 0.6 years). Daily PA was assessed using a triaxial accelerometer (ActivTracer, GMS) for 6 consecutive days, including weekdays and weekend days. PE and SC participation was assessed using questionnaires for preschool teachers or parents of subjects, respectively. All health-related and skill-related physical fitness and total Z-score were correlated with time spent with physical activity ratio (PAR)≧4 when adjusted for age, sex, body height and weight. In addition, greater grip strength was associated with PE participation at preschool, and 25 m run speed was associated with SC participation, also. However, 25 m run speed was negatively associated with PE participation. These findings suggest that daily PA may contribute to the development of both health-related and skill-related fitness in preschool children, although further research on the cause-effect relationship is needed. Moreover, participation in a SC may contribute to the development of running speed.

OBJECTIVE: To test the validity of accelerometry for monitoring AVG playing intensity.
METHOD: Twenty-two adults performed 80 activities included in the Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus series. The energy expenditure (EE) and subsequent MET values were measured by indirect calorimetry using metabolic chambers. Subjects wore an accelerometer-based monitor displaying MET values. For each activity, METs values obtained from indirect calorimetry and accelerometry were compared. Each activity was classified as light or moderate to vigorous physical activity (LPA: < 3METs or MVPA: >= 3METs) for the two methods.
RESULTS: AVG intensities have been slightly but significantly underestimated by the acceleromater-based monitor compared to the indirect calorimetry (2.5 +/- 1.0 instead of 2.7 +/- 0.9 METs). Fourty percent of activities have been significantly misestimated, and 20% have been misclassified.
CONCLUSION: Those results point out the potential bias of accelerometry measurements for evaluating AVG intensities. Because average AVG intensity lays at the boundary between LPA and MVPA classes, misclassifications can frequently occur. Accelerometry data should be interpreted with caution in intervention studies using AVG.

Methods: This was a randomized crossover study. Nine healthy young male participants performed two 39-h (two nights, three days) PA sessions (continuous and intermittent exercise) in a respiratory chamber to measure energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation. Participants used a stationary cycling ergometer continuously for 40 min and then 45 min in the continuous PA trial and for 5 min every 30 min 17 times in the intermittent PA trial. They consumed high-carbohydrate meals corresponding to predicted daily total EE for 3 d before entering the respiratory chamber and four high-fat meals corresponding to predicted total EE in the chamber. Results: Twenty-three-hour RER adjusted for sleeping RER on the preceding day was significantly lower in the intermittent PA trial than that in the continuous PA trial (P = 0.021). Twenty-three-hour RER adjusted for sleeping RER on the preceding day was correlated with accumulated consecutive minutes of METs <= 1.5 (3 min or more, r = 0.477; 5 min or more, r = 0.510; 10 min or more, r = 0.605). Conclusions: The intermittent PA trial induced greater fat utilization than the continuous PA trial. The present study, therefore, suggests that intermittent PA has a beneficial effect on 24-h fat oxidation after consumption of a high-fat meal, which may help prevent weight gain over time.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of consuming three (3M) vs. six meals (6M) per day on 24-h fat oxidation and subjective ratings of hunger.
Design and Methods: Lean (body mass index <25 kg/m(2)) subjects (7M, 8F) were studied in a whole-room calorimeter on two occasions in a randomized cross-over design. Subjects were provided isoenergetic, energy balanced diets with a 1- to 2-week washout between conditions. Hunger, fullness, and "desire to eat'' ratings were assessed throughout the day using visual analog scales and quantified as area under the curve (AUC).
Results: There were no differences (P < 0.05) in 24-h energy expenditure (8.7 +/- 0.3 vs. 8.6 +/- 0.3 mj d(-1)), 24-h respiratory quotient (0.85 +/- 0.01 vs. 0.85 +/- 0.01), or 24-h fat oxidation (82 +/- 6 vs. 80 +/- 7 g day(-1)) between 3M and 6M, respectively. There was no difference in fullness 24-h AUC, but hunger AUC (41850 +/- 2255 vs. 36612 +/- 2556 mm. 24 h, P = 0.03) and "desire to eat'' AUC (47061 +/- 1791 vs. 41170 +/- 2574 mm. 24 h, P = 0.03) were greater during 6M than 3M.
Conclusion: We conclude that increasing meal frequency from three to six per day has no significant effect on 24-h fat oxidation, but may increase hunger and the desire to eat.

Future space missions require a more efficient exercise program to maintain work efficiency and to control increased energy expenditure (EE). We have been developing two types of original exercise training protocols which are better suited to astronauts' daily routine exercise during long-term spaceflight: sprint interval training (SIT) and high-intensity interval aerobic training (HIAT). In this study, we compared the total EE, including excess post-exercise energy expenditure (EPEE), induced by our interval cycling protocols with the total EE of a traditional, continuous aerobic training (CAT). In the results, while the EPEEs after the SIT and HIAT were greater than after the CAT, the total EE for an entire exercise/rest session with the CAT was the greatest of our three exercise protocols. The SIT and HIAT would be potential protocols to control energy expenditure for long space missions. © 2013 European Space Agency.

Fifty obese men, aged 51.4 +/- 7.0 y, received a 6-mo regimen consisting of 2 phases. Weekly 90-min free-living PAP sessions were provided for 3 mo immediately after a 3-mo diet modification phase. Fat mass (FM) was measured at baseline and at months 3 and 6 using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The time spent in moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was monitored by a validated single-axis accelerometer. The total energy intake of all participants was assessed at baseline and during weeks 9 and 10 of both the diet modification and PAP programs. The change (Delta) in FM was -1.4 +/- 1.9 kg (p<0.05) during the PAP program after the diet modification program (-4.3 +/- 2.9 kg, p<0.01). Although there was no significant relationship between Delta FM and Delta MVPA during the PAP phase (p=0.11), MVPA was significantly increased during the PAP phase (+76.0 +/- 146.5 min/wk, p<0.01). However, a significant correlation was observed between energy intake/weight and MVPA during the PAP program (r=0.39). Our results suggest that the magnitude of expected FM loss induced by an increase in PA may be suppressed as a result of increased energy intake, even during a PAP program after a diet modification program.

Methods: Thirty-three men and thirty-two women were enrolled in this study. The subjects performed 5 nonlocomotive activities and 7 locomotive movements. The Douglas bag method was used to gather expired air. The subjects also wore 3 hip accelerometers, a Lifecorder uniaxial accelerometer (LC), and 2 triaxial accelerometers (ActivTracer, AT; Actimarker, AM). Results: For nonlocomotive activities, the LC largely underestimated METs for all activities (20.3%-55.6%) except for desk work. The AT overestimated METs for desk work (11.3%) and hanging clothes (11.7%), but underestimated for vacuuming (2.3%). The AM underestimated METs for all nonlocomotive activities (8.0%-19.4%) except for hanging clothes (overestimated by 16.7%). The AT and AM errors were significant, but much smaller than the LC errors (23.2% for desk work and -22.3 to -55.6% for the other activities). For locomotive movements, the 3 accelerometers significantly underestimated METs for all activities except for climbing down stairs. Conclusions: We conclude that there were significant differences for most activities in 3 accelerometers. However, the AT, which uses separate equations for nonlocomotive and locomotive activities, was more accurate for nonlocomotive activities than the LC.

Introduction: Astronauts experience weight loss during spaceflight. Future space missions require a more efficient exercise program not only to maintain work efficiency, but also to control increased energy expenditure (EE). When discussing issues concerning EE incurred through exercise, excess post-exercise energy expenditure (EPEE) must also be considered. The aim of this study was to compare the total EE, including EPEE, induced by two types of interval cycling protocols with the total EE of a traditional, continuous cycling protocol. Methods: There were 10 healthy men, ages 20 to 31 yr, who completed 3 exercise sessions:. sprint interval training (SIT) consisting of 7 sets of 30-s cycling at 120% (V) over dot O-2max with a 15-s rest between each bout; high-intensity interval aerobic training (HIAT) consisting of 3 sets of 3-min cycling at 80-90% (V) over dot O-2max with a 2-min active rest at 50% (V) over dot O-2max; and continuous aerobic training (CAT) consisting of 40 min of cycling at 60-65% (V) over dot O-2max. During each session, resting metabolic rate, exercise EE, and a 180-min post-exercise EE were measured. Results: The EPEEs during the SIT, HIAT, and CAT averaged 32 +/- 19, 21 +/- 16, and 13 +/- 13 kcal, and the total EE for an entire exercise/rest session averaged 109 +/- 20, 182 +/- 17, and 363 +/- 45 kcal, respectively. While the EPEE after the CAT was significantly less than after the SIT, the total EE with the AT was the greatest of the three. Discussion: The SIT and HIAT would be potential protocols to control energy diture for long space missions.

Two hundred and thirty one men and 224 women wore a tri-axial accelerometer for two weeks. We analyzed the data in each age group (young (less than 40 years), middle-aged (40 to 59 years), and elderly (60 years or more) groups), also. There were significant relationships between daily steps and locomotive activity (r = 0.762 to 0.820, p <
0.001) and total (locomotive and non-locomotive) physical activity (r = 0.706 to 0.824, p <
0.001) with intensity of 3 METs or more in all groups. The daily steps corresponding to 23 METs-h/wk, calculated using regression lines between the daily steps and total physical activities with inten-sity of 3 METs or more in men and women were 6,534 steps/d and 6,119 steps/d. On the other hand, the daily steps corresponding to 23 METs-h/wk, calculated using regression lines between the daily steps and locomotive activities with intensity of 3 METs or more in men and women were 7,888 steps/d and 8,584 steps/d. These results suggest that non-locomotive activity should also be taken into consideration in the case of assessment of a daily physical activity.

Pediatric Exercise Science, Human Kinetics Publishers Inc., 24巻, 3号, 掲載ページ 420-434, 出版日 2012年, 査読付, This study examined the potential relationship between participation in physical activity (PA) assessed by triaxial accelerometry and physical fitness testing, including health-related and skill-related parameters of fitness, in 136 Japanese preschoolers (65 girls and 71 boys, 5.5 ± 0.6 years). In partial correlation analyses, grip strength and 20m shuttle run test were positively correlated with time spent in physical activity ratio (PAR) ≥ 4. Better scores on standing long jump distance and jump over and crawl under tests were associated with lower sedentary time and greater moderate-to-vigorous PA time and PAR ≥ 4 time, and increased physical activity level. Moreover, 25m run speed was positively correlated with time spent in PAR ≥ 4 and locomotive activity. These findings suggest that development of both health-related (muscle strength and aerobic fitness) and skill-related fitness (power, agility and speed) may make engagement in PA easier for preschool children, although further research on the cause-effect relationship is needed. © 2012 Human Kinetics, Inc.

BMC Research Notes, 5巻, 掲載ページ e646, 出版日 2012年, 査読付, Background: The purpose of this study was to reveal any association between cardiorespiratory fitness level and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) using three cycling protocols with varying degrees of exercise intensity, i.e., sprint interval training (SIT), high-intensity interval aerobic training (HIAT), and continuous aerobic training (CAT). Findings. Ten healthy men, aged 20 to 31 years, attended a cross-over experiment and completed three exercise sessions: SIT consisting of 7 sets of 30-s cycling at 120% VO2 with a 15-s rest between sets
HIAT consisting of 3 sets of 3-min cycling at 80∼90% VO2 with a 2-min active rest at 50% VO2 between sets
and CAT consisting of 40 min of cycling at 60∼65% VO2. During each session, resting VO2, exercise VO2, and a 180-min post-exercise VO2 were measured. The net exercise VO 2 during the SIT, HIAT, and CAT averaged 14.7 ± 1.5, 31.8 ± 4.1, and 71.1 ± 10.0 L, and the EPOCs averaged 6.8 ± 4.0, 4.5 ± 3.3, and 2.9 ± 2.8 L, respectively. However, no study has investigated this comparison in Japanese subjects, who are known to be susceptible to type 2 diabetes due to genetic characteristics. Thirty obese Japanese adults with pre-type 2 diabetes (n=7) or type 2 diabetes (n=13) or without diabetes (n=10) participated in this study. BMR was measured using indirect calorimetry. The relationships between residual BMR (calculated as measured BMR minus BMR adjusted for fat-free mass, fat mass, age, and sex) and biomarkers including fasting glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA(1c)), fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-R), triglycerides, and free fatty acids were examined using Pearson's correlation. BMR in diabetic subjects adjusted for fat-free mass, fat mass, age, and sex was 7.1% higher than in non-diabetic subjects. BMR in diabetic subjects was also significantly (p<0.05) higher than in non-diabetic subjects. There was a significant correlation between residual BMR and fasting glucose (r=0.391. p=0.032). These results indicate that in the Japanese population, obese subjects with type 2 diabetes have higher BMR compared with obese non-diabetic subjects. The fasting glucose level may contribute to these differences.

We conducted a cross-sectional study in 100 female subjects ranging in age from 31 to 69 years. Subjects were classified in quartiles of BMI, FFMI, FMI and %BF. Daily walking steps and the duration of light to vigorous physical activity were simultaneously assessed by an accelerometer for the same period as the DLW experiment. Only physical activity-related energy expenditure (PAEE)/FFM and PAEE/body weight (BW) decreased in the highest quartile of BMI. Physical activity level, PAEE/FFM and PAEE/BW decreased in the highest quartile of FMI and %BF, whereas they were not different among quartiles of FFMI. Daily walking steps and the duration of moderate-and vigorous-intensity physical activities decreased or tended to decrease in the highest quartile of FMI and %BF, but did not differ among quartiles of FFMI and BMI. These results clearly showed that Japanese adult women with higher fat deposition obviously had a low level of physical activities assessed by both the DLW method and accelerometry, but those with larger BMI had lower PAEE/FFM and PAEE/BW only. Our data suggest that the relationship between obesity and daily physical activities should be discussed using not only BMI but also FMI or %BF.

However, it has been reported that many of these equations, used widely, overestimate BMR not only for Asians, but also for Caucasians. The present study examined the accuracy of several predictive equations for BMR in Japanese subjects. In 365 healthy Japanese male and female subjects, aged 18 to 79 y, BMR was measured in the post-absorptive state using a mask and Douglas bag. Six predictive equations were examined. Total error was used as an index of the accuracy of each equation's prediction. Predicted BMR values by Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (Japan-DRI), Adjusted Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese (Adjusted-DRI), and Ganpule equations were not significantly different from the measured BMR in either sex. On the other hand, Harris-Benedict, Schofield, and Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization/United Nations University equations were significantly higher than the measured BMR in both sexes. The prediction error by Japan-DRI. Adjusted-DRI, and Harris-Benedict equations was significantly correlated with body weight in both sexes. Total error using the Ganpule equation was low in both males and females (125 and 99 kcal/d, respectively). In addition, total error using the Adjusted-DRI equation was low in females (95 kcal/d). Thus, the Ganpule equation was the most accurate in predicting BMR in our healthy Japanese subjects. because the difference between the predicted and measured BMR was relatively small, and body weight had no effect on the prediction error.

The purpose of the present study was to develop a new model for the immediate estimation of daily physical activity intensities using a triaxial accelerometer. A total of sixty-six subjects were randomly assigned into validation (n 44) and cross-validation (n 22) groups. All subjects performed fourteen activities while wearing a triaxial accelerometer in a controlled laboratory setting. During each activity, energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry, and physical activity intensities were expressed as metabolic equivalents (MET). The validation group displayed strong relationships between measured MET and filtered synthetic accelerations for household (r 0.907, P < 0.001) and locomotive (r 0.961, P < 0.001) activities. In the cross-validation group, two GRPACA-based linear regression models provided highly accurate MET estimation for household and locomotive activities. Results were similar when equations were developed by non-linear regression or sex-specific linear or non-linear regressions. Sedentary activities were also accurately estimated by the specific linear regression classified from other activity counts. Therefore, the use of a triaxial accelerometer in combination with a GRPACA permits more accurate and immediate estimation of daily physical activity intensities, compared with previously reported cutoff classification models. This method may be useful for field investigations as well as for self-monitoring by general users.

The purpose of the present study was to determine the contribution of locomotive activity to PAL using total step counts measured in a calorimeter study. Methods. PAL, calculated as total energy expenditure divided by basal metabolic rate, was evaluated in 11 adult men using three different conditions for 24-hour human calorimeter measurements: a low-activity day (L-day) targeted at a low active level of PAL (1.45), and a high-frequency moderate activity day (M-day) or a high-frequency vigorous activity day (V-day) targeted at an active level of PAL (1.75). These subjects were permitted only light activities except prescribed activities. In a separate group of 41 adults, free-living PAL was evaluated using doubly-labeled water (DLW). In both experiments, step counts per day were also measured using an accelerometer. Results: In the human calorimeter study, PAL and step counts were 1.42 0.10 and 8,973 543 steps/d (L-day), 1.82 0.14 and 29,588 1,126 steps/d (M-day), and 1.74 0.15 and 23,755 1,038 steps/d (V-day), respectively. In the DLW study, PAL and step counts were 1.73 0.15 and 10,022 2,605 steps/d, and there was no significant relationship between PAL and daily step counts. Conclusions: These results indicate that an enormous number of steps are needed for an active level of PAL if individuals extend physical activity-induced energy expenditure by only locomotive activity. Therefore, non-locomotive activity such as household activity should also play a significant role in increasing PAL under free-living conditions. © 2011 Ohkawara et al.

肥満研究, (一社)日本肥満学会, 13巻, 3号, 掲載ページ 283-289, 出版日 2007年12月, メタボリックシンドローム(MetSyn)の予防・改善には,全身持久性体力(CRF)の関与が報告されており,身体活動量を増やすことが推奨されている.身体活動量の増大には,筋力や柔軟性などCRF以外の体力因子も影響を与えていると考えられるため,MetSynと体力との関連性は,CRFのみならず他の体力因子も含めた総合的体力としての検討が必要であろう.そこで本研究では,中高年男性133名(62.8±8.2歳)を対象に,MetSynに該当する者と該当しない者における総合的体力および体力因子の差異を検討した.また,総合的体力を構成する因子のうち,MetSynの有無の予測にはどの体力因子が強く関与しているかをあわせて検討した.身体の総合的体力を反映する体力年齢指数において,MetSyn群とNon-MetSyn群の間に有意差がみとめられた.またMetSyn非該当者であっても内臓脂肪蓄積型肥満(MetSyn予備群)に該当する者の体力年齢指数は,MetSyn該当者と同程度に低値であった.さらに,ロジスティック回帰分析の結果,体力因子のうちVO2maxのみがMetSynの有無の予測に有意な説明変数としてみとめられた.これらの結果より,総合的体力の高い者の方がMetSyn有病率リスクの低いことが示唆された.また,総合的体力の構成因子のうち,MetSynの有無の予測にはVO2maxが強く関与していると考えられた.今後,体力の向上がMetSynの改善に有用であるのかを明らかにするため,縦断的な検討が必要である.(著者抄録)

Fourteen obese (body mass index >25 kg/m(2)) men were classified into two groups according to visceral fat area using computed tomography; i.e., VF-Ob (n = 7; mean age, 52.0 +/- 2.5 year) and SF-Ob (n = 7; mean age, 57.3 +/- 2.8 year) groups. Plasma fat concentration and fat oxidation were measured at rest and during 60-min high-intensity (70% of peak oxygen uptake) stationary cycling exercise. Plasma concentrations of free fatty acid and glycerol were significantly higher (P <= 0.05) in VF-Ob men compared with SF-Ob men during endurance exercise. However, no significant difference was found in fat oxidation between VF-Ob and SF-Ob men (697 +/- 135 and 661 +/- 96 kJ/h, respectively) during high-intensity endurance exercise. These results suggest that obesity phenotype affects plasma fat concentration even during high-intensity exercise. It is likely that plasma fat concentrations in visceral fat obese men during high-intensity endurance exercise are more increased compared with during moderate-intensity endurance exercise. Design: A randomized, controlled, prospective, 14-week weight-loss intervention.
Setting and participants: Forty-eight obese Japanese men aged 27-66 years were assigned to 2 subgroups depending on the type of treatment: diet alone (DA) and diet plus exercise training (DE). Concentration of tHcy was measured in frozen plasma samples by an HPLC method.
Results: Body weight decreased significantly for both groups: DA -7.8 +/- 3.2 kg and DE -9.1 +/- 3.6 kg. A significant decrease was found in tHcys concentration of the DE group (-2.3 +/- 5.0 mu mol/L) but not of the DA (-0.3 +/- 2.7 mu mol/L). For subjects with hyperhomocysteinemia (>= 15 mu mol/L, n=17), tHcys concentration decreased from 20.1 +/- 7.0 to 13.9 +/- 3.0 mu mol/L (p<0.01) for the DE group (n = 8) but did not change for the DA group (16.6 +/- 1.9 mu mol/L -> 15.4 +/- 2.3 mu mol/L, n=9). Furthermore, to consider a statistical phenomenon "regression to the mean", we excluded two subjects with the highest two tHcys values of the DE group. The DE group (n=7) still displayed a significant reduction after the exclusion.
Conclusions: A weight reduction with diet alone did not improve tHcy levels. Adding aerobic exercise training to a dietary weight-reduction program may be effective for a reduction in tHcy. (C) 2007 Asian Oceanian Association for the Study of Obesity. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

However, the influence of adiposity and weight reduction on PMP generation remains to be fully elucidated. We compared PMP generation and fibrinolytic parameters between 49 non-diabetic obese (obese group) and 37 age-matched non-obese subjects (control group), and compared the effects of weight reduction on the parameters between a 12-week calorie restricted diet and diet with aerobic exercise in obese subjects.
Materials and methods: PMP, plasma levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) activity and tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) antigen were measured before and after intervention.
Results: Before intervention, PMP, PAI-1 activity and t-PA antigen values were elevated in the obese group compared with the control group. In all 86 subjects of both groups, these three parameters correlated with body mass index, waist circumference and fat tissue mass. There was a positive correlation between plasma levels of fibrinolytic parameters and visceral fat area (VFA). PMP values correlated with subcutaneous fat area (SFA). The intervention significantly reduced PMP, PAI-1 activity and t-PA antigen levels. There was a significant correlation between percentages of changes in PMP values and those in BMI, fat tissue mass and VFA in the obese group. No additional effect of exercise on PMP or fibrinolytic parameters was observed.
Conclusions: Overproduction of PMP and fibrinolytic abnormalities may be associated with excessive adipose tissue. Weight reduction by either calorie restriction with or without exercise improves fibrinolytic abnormalities and PMP overproduction, probably through reduction of adipose tissue. This study aimed to investigate in obese men whether body fat distribution would influence plasma fat availability and oxidation during endurance exercise.
Design: Fourteen sedentary men (body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m(2)) were divided into two groups by visceral fat (VF) area: VF obese (VF-Ob) (n = 7, age; 52.0 +/- 2.5 (s.e.) years) and abdominal subcutaneous fat obese (SF-Ob) (n = 7, age; 57.3 +/- 2.8 (s.e.) years). All participants performed stationary cycling exercise for 60 min at 50% of peak oxygen uptake.
Measurements: Blood and respiratory gas samples were taken for analysis of hormone, metabolite and substrate oxidation in each participant at rest and during exercise.
Results: There is a significant group x time interaction in the plasma concentration of free fatty acid (FFA) (P < 0.05) and glycerol (P < 0.05) during the exercise bout. In addition, total plasma concentration of FFA (area under the curve) was 59.2% higher in VF-Ob compared with SF-Ob men during endurance exercise (1.99 +/- 0.24 and 1.25 +/- 0.13 mEq/l/min, respectively; P < 0.05). Total plasma concentration of glycerol (area under the curve) was 102.3% higher in VF-Ob than SF-Ob men during the exercise (69.6 +/- 12.5 and 34.4 +/- 5.1 mg/dl/min, respectively; P < 0.05). However, fat oxidation was not different throughout the exercise between VF-Ob and SF-Ob men (176.5 +/- 25.7 and 183.0 +/- 12.8 kcal/60 min, respectively).
Conclusion: During moderate endurance exercise, plasma fat availability may be higher in men with VF obesity compared to men with SF obesity. However, total fat oxidation is similar between obesity phenotype.

Endothelin-1 (ET-1), which is produced mostly by vascular endothelial cells, has potent vasoconstrictor and proliferative activity in vascular smooth muscle cells and, therefore, has been implicated in regulation of vascular tonus and the progression of atherosclerosis, suggesting that ET-1 may be important in endothelial dysfunction. We studied whether diet-induced weight loss (i.e., lifestyle modification) affects plasma ET-1 concentration in obese individuals. We measured plasma ET-1 concentration in seven obese men (age: 48 +/- 4 years old, body mass index: 27.7 +/- 0.5 kg/m(2)) before and after a 3-month, diet-induced weight reduction program (i.e., lifestyle modification program). Caloric restriction reduced body weight from 78 +/- 3 to 68 +/- 2 kg (P < 0.001) and resulted in 12.1 +/- 1.2% reduction in body mass index (24.3 +/- 0.3 kg/m(2), P < 0.0001). After the weight reduction program, systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased (128 +/- 7 vs. 115 +/- 4 mm Hg, P < 0.05 and 88 +/- 4 vs. 77 +/- 2 min Hg, P < 0.01, respectively). The plasma level of ET-1 significantly decreased after the program (5.1 +/- 0.4 vs. 4.0 +/- 0.3 pg/ml, P < 0.05). The percentage systolic blood pressure reduction and percentage plasma ET-1 concentration reduction was in a linear relationship (r = 0.86, P < 0.05). Furthermore, the relationship between percentage weight reduction and percentage plasma ET-1 concentration reduction was linear (r = 0.87, P < 0.05). We conclude that weight loss by low-calorie diet (i.e., lifestyle modification) reduces plasma ET-1 concentration in obese individuals. This reduction may contribute to the improvement of obesity-induced endothelial dysfunction.

The human body composition was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), 5 brands of S-BIM, and 2 brands of M-BIM. Forty-five women, aged 26-58 years, served as subjects. The S-BIM and M-BIM fat-free mass (FFM) estimates were highly correlated with the FFM measured by DEXA (r = 0.82-0.93). The standard errors of estimate (SEE) for FFM were approximately 2 kg. With the exception of the MLT-100 (which slightly underestimated FFM), all brands of BIM slightly overestimated FFM. The absolute mean differences between FFMDEXA and each of the 7 BIM estimates ranged from -3.02 kg to 3.46 kg. Although the 7 brands of BIM provided slightly different estimates, the results of this study suggest that S-BIM and M-BIM are relatively valid in human body composition.

メタボリックシンドローム(生活習慣病)の源流にある肥満を改善(減量)するために、運動療法は一般的に広く用いられている。減量の主な目的は体脂肪の減少にあることから、これまで、運動中の脂肪燃焼効率に主眼を置いた運動療法(低〜中強度で20分以上の運動)が展開されてきた。しかしながら、近年では、運動中の脂肪燃焼効率よりも運動中に利用される総エネルギー消費量が、肥満の改善(減量)につながることが明らかとなってきた。つまり、効果的な減量を達成するための運動療法は、脂肪燃焼にこだわることなく、運動中にできる限り総エネルギー消費量を高めることに主眼を置くべきである。運動による総エネルギー消費量を増やすためには、運動初期を除き、徐々に運動強度を上げていき、運動時間を延ばすことや日常生活の中でこまめに動くことで運動量(中強度で週に150分程度の身体活動)を確保することが肝要である。そして、これらを念頭に長期的展望のもと、段階を踏んだ運動療法を進めていくことが、肥満の効果的・効率的な改善につながるといえる。(著者抄録), (有)フジメディカル出版, 出版日 2010年06月, Adiposcience, 6巻, 4号, 掲載ページ 373-379, 日本語, 1349-1318, 2010273078 - 長期間にわたる運動の継続または中断が循環器疾患患者の体力および血液検査値に及ぼす影響

- 日常生活下における肥満抑制因子としての非運動性身体活動と24時間脂質酸化能の役割

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 独立行政法人国立健康・栄養研究所, 特別研究員奨励費, 「日常生活下における肥満抑制因子としての非運動性身体活動と24時間脂質酸化能の役割」という研究課題のもと、肥満予防と身体活動および24時間脂質酸化能との関連について検討してきた。家事などを含む「非運動性身体活動:NEAT」が近年特に注目されているが、我々はこれまで困難であった自由生活下でのNEATの定量化を高い精度でおこなうため、3次元加速度計を用いた新たなアルゴリズムを開発(Ohkawara et al.,Br J Nutr,2011)し、本研究課題の解決に用いた。また、これまで先行研究で行なわれてきたような短時間の脂質酸化量から検討するだけでは、その後の食事摂取や身体活動の影響を考慮できず、日常生活での状況を十分に反映する結果を示すことができていなかった。そこで、本研究ではヒューマンカロリメータ(エネルギー代謝測定室)を用い、統制された条件下で24時間の脂質酸化量を測定し、肥満抑制との関連についてより精度の高い方法で検討を試みた。本年度は最終年度の3年目にあたる。検討課題のひとつは研究開始初年度より中田由夫氏(筑波大学医学医療系)との共同研究により進めてきており、現在までにデータをすべて取得できた。実験デザインは、肥満者をコントロール群、弱介入群、強介入群の3群に分け、6ヶ月の減量介入を行ない、その後2年間のフォローアップ調査をおこなうRCT試験(Nakata et al.,Obesity facts,2011)である。現在はデータの処理を進めているが、そのうちの減量前後によるデータを用いて解析した結果は本年度5月に開催されたアメリカスポーツ医学会にて口頭発表した。また、採用期間中に米国コロラド大学デンバー校ヘルスサイエンスセンターのDr.Melansonのもとへ研究留学し、実験を遂行することができた。その研究成果は本年度のThe 29th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Obesity Societyおよび2nd international conference on recent advances and controversies in measuring energy metabolismにて口頭発表した。さらに、採用期間中に実施してきた研究内容をまとめた形でThe 16th European College of Sports Scienceにてシンポジストとして口頭発表した。現在論文投稿に向けて準備中の研究成果が多いが、本年度中もいくつかの研究成果が論文化されている。, 09J03696
