  • Perceptual shrinkage of a one-way motion path with high-speed motion
    Yutaka Nakajima; Yutaka Sakaguchi
SCIENTIFIC REPORTS, NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP, 6, 30592, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Back-and-forth motion induces perceptual shrinkage of the motion path, but such shrinkage is hardly perceived for one-way motion. If the shrinkage is caused by temporal averaging of stimulus position around the endpoints, it should also be induced for one-way motion at higher motion speeds. In psychophysical experiments with a high-speed projector, we tested this conjecture for a one-way motion stimulus at various speeds (4-100 deg/s) along a straight path. Results showed that perceptual shrinkage of the motion path was robustly observed in higher-speed motion (faster than 66.7 deg/s). In addition, the amount of the forwards shift at the onset position was larger than that of the backwards shift at the offset position. These results demonstrate that high-speed motion can induce shrinkage, even for a one-way motion path. This can be explained by the view that perceptual position is represented by the integration of the temporal average of instantaneous position and the motion representation.

  • Relationship between Musical Characteristics and Temporal Breathing Pattern in Piano Performance
    Yutaka Sakaguchi; Eriko Aiba
Lead, FRONTIERS IN HUMAN NEUROSCIENCE, FRONTIERS MEDIA SA, 10, 00381, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Although there is growing evidence that breathing is modulated by various motor and cognitive activities, the nature of breathing in musical performance has been little explored. The present study examined the temporal breath pattern in piano performance, aiming to elucidate how breath timing is related to musical organization/events and performance. In the experiments, the respiration of 15 professional and amateur pianists, playing 10 music excerpts in total (from four-octave C major scale, Hanon's exercise, J. S. Bach's Invention, Mozart's Sonatas, and Debussy's Clair de lune), was monitored by capnography. The relationship between breathing and musical characteristics was analyzed. Five major results were obtained. (1) Mean breath interval was shortened for excerpts in faster tempi. (2) Fluctuation of breath intervals was reduced for the pieces for finger exercise and those in faster tempi. Pianists showing large within-trial fluctuation also exhibited large inter-excerpt difference. (3) Inter-trial consistency of the breath patterns depended on the excerpts. Consistency was generally reduced for the excerpts that could be performed mechanically (i.e., pieces for finger exercise), but interestingly, one third of the participant showed consistent patterns for the simple scale, correlated with the ascending/descending sequences. (4) Pianists tended to exhale just after the music onsets, inhale at the rests, and inhibit inhale during the slur parts. There was correlation between breathing pattern and two-voice polyphonic structure for several participants. (5) Respiratory patterns were notably different among the pianists. Every pianist showed his or her own characteristic features commonly for various musical works. These findings suggest that breathing in piano performance depends not only on musical parameters and organization written in the score but also some pianist-dependent factors which might be ingrained to individual pianists.

  • State Variables of the Arm May Be Encoded by Single Neuron Activity in the Monkey Motor Cortex
    Eizo Miyashita; Yutaka Sakaguchi
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 63, 3, 1943-1952, Mar. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Revealing the type of information encoded by neurons activity in the motor cortex is essential not only for understanding the mechanism of motion control but also for developing a brain-machine interface. Thus far, the concept of preferred direction (PD) vector has dominated the discussion regarding how neural activity encodes information; however, a unified view of exactly what information is encoded has not yet been established. In this study, a model was constructed to describe temporal neuron activity by a dot product of the PD and the movement variables vector consisting of joint torque and angular velocity. The plausibility of this model was tested by comparing estimated neural activity with that recorded from the monkey motor cortex, and it was found that this model was able to explain the temporal pattern of neuron activity irrespective of its passive responsiveness. The mean determination coefficients of neurons that responded to proprioceptive stimuli and that responded to visual stimuli were relatively high values of 0.57 and 0.58, respectively. These results suggest that neurons in the monkey motor cortex encode state variables of the arm in a framework of modern control theory and that this information could be decoded for controlling a brain-machine interface.

Human-Harmonized Information Technology, Volume 1: Vertical Impact, Springer Japan, 97-136, 01 Jan. 2016, Peer-reviwed, The purpose of this research is to realize a dynamic information space harmonizing human perception system, recognition system, and motor system. Toward this purpose, our key technology is high-speed sensor technology and display technology focusing on vision and haptic sense which performs at the order of kHz. Based on these technologies, our information space can obtain the dynamics of humans and objects in perfect condition and displays information at high speed. As subsystems for our goal, we have newly developed four important elemental technologies including high-speed 3D vision toward insensible dynamics sensing, high-speed resistor network proximity sensor array for detecting nearby object, noncontact low-latency haptic feedback, and high-speed display of visual information for information sharing and operation in real space. Also, in order to achieve the coordinated interaction between individual humans and this information space, we have conducted the research about the human perceptual and motor functions for coordinated interaction with high-speed information environment. In addition, we have developed various application systems based on the concept of dynamic information space by integrating the subsystems.

21, 1, 7-14, Jan. 2016, Peer-reviwed, In visual psychophysics, a CRT monitor has been widely used to present visual stimuli, while its temporal resolution was limited by its frame length of about 5 ms (i.e., refresh rate of 200 Hz). Recently, however, a high speed DLP projector was introduced to the market, which realizes much shorter frame length (〜 0.2 ms) for binary images. For such projectors, moreover, the duty ratio of the optical images can be manipulated, which makes it possible to investigate the mechanism of human temporal visual processing which cannot be accessed with the conventional visual devices. In this paper, we explain some temporal properties of the projector essential to the psychophysical experiments and show an example of experimental setup made in combination of the projector with a programming library for psychophysical experiments.

  • Transient twinkle perception is induced by sequential presentation of stimuli that flicker at frequencies above the critical fusion frequency
    Yutaka Nakajima; Yutaka Sakaguchi
ATTENTION PERCEPTION & PSYCHOPHYSICS, SPRINGER, 77, 8, 2711-2727, Nov. 2015, Peer-reviwed, The critical fusion frequency (CFF) is a threshold that represents the temporal limits of the human visual system. If two flickering stimuli with equal subjective luminances are presented simultaneously at different locations, the CFF is the temporal frequency above which they cannot be distinguished. However, when the stimuli are presented sequentially at the same position, a transient twinkle can be perceived around the moment of the changeover. To investigate the mechanism underlying this transient twinkle perception (TTP), we independently manipulated the luminance contrast and temporal frequency of the flicker, as well as the interstimulus interval (ISI). We found that TTP was greater as the luminance step was larger, was stably perceived for flicker frequencies up to 200 Hz, and was robust for all ISIs if flicker frequencies were below 250 Hz. For 250- and 300-Hz flickers, TTP was attenuated in conditions in which one-frame and two-frame ISIs were inserted. These results can be explained by a simple filtering model: TTP occurs if the temporal change in the weighted moving average of stimulus luminance exceeds a certain threshold. TTP gives additional evidence that the human visual system can detect the transient change of flicker stimuli at much higher temporal frequencies than the CFF, by an averaging mechanism of luminance.

  • Adaptive intermittent control: A computational model explaining motor intermittency observed in human behavior
Yutaka Sakaguchi; Masato Tanaka; Yasuyuki Inoue
NEURAL NETWORKS, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 67, 92-109, Jul. 2015, Peer-reviwed, It is a fundamental question how our brain performs a given motor task in a real-time fashion with the slow sensorimotor system. Computational theory proposed an influential idea of feed-forward control, but it has mainly treated the case that the movement is ballistic (such as reaching) because the motor commands should be calculated in advance of movement execution. As a possible mechanism for operating feed-forward control in continuous motor tasks (such as target tracking), we propose a control model called "adaptive intermittent control" or "segmented control," that brain adaptively divides the continuous time axis into discrete segments and executes feed-forward control in each segment. The idea of intermittent control has been proposed in the fields of control theory, biological modeling and nonlinear dynamical system. Compared with these previous models, the key of the proposed model is that the system speculatively determines the segmentation based on the future prediction and its uncertainty. The result of computer simulation showed that the proposed model realized faithful visuo-manual tracking with realistic sensorimotor delays and with less computational costs (i.e., with fewer number of segments). Furthermore, it replicated "motor intermittency", that is, intermittent discontinuities commonly observed in human movement trajectories. We discuss that the temporally segmented control is an inevitable strategy for brain which has to achieve a given task with small computational (or cognitive) cost, using a slow control system in an uncertain variable environment, and the motor intermittency is the side-effect of this strategy. • A wavelet-based method for extracting intermittent discontinuities observed in human motor behavior
    Yasuyuki Inoue; Yutaka Sakaguchi
NEURAL NETWORKS, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 62, 91-101, Feb. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Human motor behavior often shows intermittent discontinuities even when people try to follow a continuously moving target. Although most previous studies revealed common characteristics of this "motor intermittency" using frequency analysis, this technique is not always appropriate because the nature of the intermittency is not stationary, i.e., the temporal intervals between the discontinuities may vary irregularly. In the present paper, we propose a novel method for extracting intermittent discontinuities using a continuous wavelet transform (CWT). This method is equivalent to the detection of peak of the jerk profile in principle, but it successfully and stably detects discontinuities using the amplitude and phase information of the complex wavelet transform. More specifically, the singularity point on the time-scale plane plays a key role in detecting the discontinuities. Another important feature is that the proposed method does not require parameter tuning because it is based on the nature of hand movement. In addition, this method does not contain any optimization process, which avoids explosive increase in computational cost for long time-series data. The performance of the proposed method was examined using an artificial trajectory composed of several primitive movements, and an actual hand trajectory in a continuous target-tracking task. The functional rationale of the proposed method is discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Phase shifts in alpha-frequency rhythm detected in electroencephalograms influence reaction time
Yasushi Naruse; Ken Takiyama; Masato Okada; Hiroaki Umehara; Yutaka Sakaguchi
NEURAL NETWORKS, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 62, 47-51, Feb. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Although the phase shifts in ongoing oscillations seen in electroencephalograms (EEGs) and magnetoencephalograms are an important factor in discussions of phase dynamics, such as synchrony and reset, few studies have focused specifically on the phase shift. Here we investigate the relationship between phase shifts in alpha-frequency rhythms and reaction times during a visual simple reaction task by applying our previously described method (Naruse et al., 2013), which enables detection of phase shifts from a single EEG trial. In the left, parietal, and occipital areas, the reaction times in the trials in which phase shifts were detected before the button press were significantly longer than in those in which phase shifts were not so detected. These results indicate that phase shifts in the alpha and mu rhythms relate to variability in reaction times. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Periodic change in phase relationship between target and hand motion during visuo-manual tracking task: Behavioral evidence for intermittent control
    Yasuyuki Inoue; Yutaka Sakaguchi
HUMAN MOVEMENT SCIENCE, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 33, 211-226, Feb. 2014, Peer-reviwed, When one performs visuo-manual tracking tasks, velocity profile of hand movements shows discontinuous patterns even if the target moves smoothly. A crucial factor of this "intermittency" is considerable delay in the sensorimotor feedback loop, and several researchers have suggested that the cause is intermittent correction of motor commands. However, when and how the brain monitors task performance and updates motor commands in a continuous motor task is uncertain. We examined how tracking error was affected by the timing of target disappearance during a tracking task. Results showed that tracking error, defined as the average phase difference between target and hand, varied periodically in all conditions. Hand preceded target at one specific phase but followed it at another, implying that motor control was not performed in a temporally uniform manner. Tracking stability was evaluated by the variance in phase difference, and changed depending on the timing of target-removal. The variability was larger when target disappeared around turning points than that when it disappeared around the center of motion. This shows that visual information at turning points is more effectively exploited for motor control of sinusoidal target tracking, suggesting that our brain controls hand movements with intermittent reference to visual information. • Visual Information of Endpoint Position Is Not Required for Prism Adaptation of Shooting Task
    Takumi Ishikawa; Yutaka Sakaguchi
NEURAL INFORMATION PROCESSING, PT III, SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN, 7064, 95-102, 2011, Peer-reviwed, Humans can easily adapt to a visually distorted environment: We can make correct movements after a few dozens of actions with visual guidance in the new environment. However, it is unclear what visual information our brain uses for this visuo-motor adaptation. To answer this question, we conducted a behavioral experiment of prism adaption of a ball shooting task, with manipulating visual information of the ball. We found that prism adaptation occurred when the position of ball impact (or endpoint) was not visually presented. A similar result was replicated in a modified experimental setup where the vision of the body was completely eliminated. These results imply that the error information at the time of hit/impact (i.e., the displacement between the target and the hit position) is not required for prism adaptation. This suggests that the visual information of on-the-fly ball trajectory can be utilized for prism adaptation.

  • Time Course of Information Representation of Macaque AIP Neurons in Hand Manipulation Task Revealed by Information Analysis
Yutaka Sakaguchi; Fumihiko Ishida; Takashi Shimizu; Akira Murata
JOURNAL OF NEUROPHYSIOLOGY, AMER PHYSIOLOGICAL SOC, 104, 6, 3625-3643, Dec. 2010, Peer-reviwed, Sakaguchi Y, Ishida F, Shimizu T, Murata A. Time course of information representation of macaque AIP neurons in hand manipulation task revealed by information analysis. J Neurophysiol 104: 3625-3643, 2010. First published October 13, 2010; doi:10.1152/jn.00125.2010. We used mutual information analysis of neuronal activity in the macaque anterior intraparietal area (AIP) to examine information processing during a hand manipulation task. The task was to reach-to-grasp a three-dimensional (3D) object after presentation of a go signal. Mutual information was calculated between the spike counts of individual neurons in 50-ms-wide time bins and six unique shape classifications or 15 one-versus-one classifications of these shapes. The spatiotemporal distribution of mutual information was visualized as a two-dimensional image ("information map") to better observe global profiles of information representation. In addition, a nonnegative matrix factorization technique was applied for extracting its structure. Our major finding was that the time course of mutual information differed significantly according to different classes of task-related neurons. This strongly suggests that different classes of neurons were engaged in different information processing stages in executing the hand manipulation task. On the other hand, our analysis revealed the heterogeneous nature of information representation of AIP neurons. For example, "information latency" (or information onset) varied among individual neurons even in the same neuron class and the same shape classification. Further, some neurons changed "information preference" (i.e., shape classification with the largest amount of information) across different task periods. These suggest that neurons encode different information in the different task periods. Taking the present result together with previous findings, we used a Gantt chart to propose a hypothetical scheme of the dynamic interactions between different types of AIP neurons.

  • Reinforcement-learning agents with different temperature parameters explain the variety of human action-selection behavior in a Markov decision process task

NEUROCOMPUTING, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 72, 7-9, 1979-1984, Mar. 2009, Peer-reviwed, We investigated the characteristics of the human action-selection in performing a Markov decision process (MDP) task, and compared them to those of reinforcement-learning (RL) agents. The behavior of human participants was roughly classified into two qualitatively different types. On the other hand, surprisingly, the variety of human behavior could be explained simply by a single parameter of the degree of randomness (i.e., the temperature parameter) in the action-selection rules of the RL agents. This result implies that the various behaviors of human action-selection may be determined by a simple mechanism in the brain. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Motor planning as an optimization of command representation
    Shiro Ikeda; Yutaka Sakaguchi
Proceedings of the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 4499-4504, 2009, Peer-reviwed, A fundamental problem in the field of motor neuroscience is to understand how our brain generates appropriate motor commands for precise movements effortlessly. The problem seems difficult since there are infinitely many possible trajectories and our musculo-skeltal system is generally redundant. We focus on the motor command representation and show that a simple strategy can solve the problem for a planar two-joints arm model. We also discuss the emergence of the muscle synergies, which may enable us to make natural motor behaviors with smaller degrees of freedom. ©2009 IEEE.

  • A computational model of perceptual grouping and 3D surface completion in the mime effect

NEURAL NETWORKS, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 21, 7, 936-944, Sep. 2008, Peer-reviwed, We propose a computational model of perceptual grouping for explaining the 3D shape representation of an illusory percept called "mime effect." This effect is associated with the generation of an illusory, volumetric perception that can be induced by particular distributions of inducing stimuli such as cones, whose orientations affect the stability of illusory perception. The authors have attempted to explain the characteristics of the shape representation of the mime effect using a neural network model that consists of four types of cells-encoding (E), normalizing (N), energetic (EN), and geometric (G) cells. E cells represent both the positions and orientations of inducing stimuli and the mime-effect shape, and N cells regulate the activity of E cells. The interactions of E cells generate dynamics whose mode indicates the stability of illusory perception; a stable dynamics mode indicates a stable perception, whereas a chaotic dynamics mode indicates an unstable perception. EN cells compute the Liapunov energetic exponent (LEE) from an energy function of the system of E cells. The stable and chaotic dynamics modes are identified by strictly negative and strictly positive values of LEE, respectively. In case of stability, G cells perform a particular surface interpolation for completing the mime effect shape. The authors confirm the model behaviour by means of computer-simulated experiments. The relation between the model behaviour and the shape representation in the human brain is also discussed. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • A system model for real-time sensorimotor processing in brain
    Yutaka Sakaguchi
NEURAL INFORMATION PROCESSING, PART I, SPRINGER-VERLAG BERLIN, 4984, 1120-1129, 2008, Peer-reviwed, The present paper addresses a general diagram to investigate the real-time parallel computation mechanism in the brain, using an idea of "Gantt chart." This diagram explicitly represents the temporal relationship between the computations running in various functional modules in the brain, and helps us to understand how the brain computation proceeds along the time. The author illustrates how we can utilize this diagram, taking a motor planning model of reaching movement as an example. Moreover, the author discusses the mechanism of intra- and inter-module computations on this diagram and addresses a tentative view that can explain the relationship between the movement variability and reaction time.

International Congress Series, 1301, 110-113, Jul. 2007, Peer-reviwed, The concept of "muscle synergies" has been proposed as a working hypothesis to explain how the central nervous system coordinates the numerous degrees of freedom of the musculoskeletal system. In this study, to examine this hypothesis, we extracted muscle synergies from human electromyography (EMG) patterns during grasping movements. The EMG patterns observed in movements to achieve different goal postures and execution times were represented by combinations of the same set of synergies. © 2006.

  • Motor planning and sparse motor command representation
    Yutaka Sakaguchi; Shiro Ikeda
Neurocomputing, 70, 10-12, 1748-1752, Jun. 2007, Peer-reviwed, The present article proposes a novel computational approach to the motor planning. In this approach, each motor command is represented as a linear combination of prefixed basis patterns, and the command for a given task is designed by minimizing a two-termed criterion consisting of a task optimization term and a parameter preference (i.e., sparseness) term. The result of a computer simulation with a single-joint reaching task confirmed that our "representation-based" criterion for motor planning appropriately worked, together with showing that the resultant trajectory qualitatively replicated Fitts' law. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. • Repetitive firing of a model motoneuron: Inhibitory effect of a Ca2+-activated potassium conductance on the slope of the frequency-current relationship
    Katsumi Wada; Yutaka Sakaguchi
NEUROSCIENCE RESEARCH, ELSEVIER IRELAND LTD, 57, 2, 259-267, Feb. 2007, Peer-reviwed, We developed a novel motoneuron model to examine the role of voltage-independent, Ca2+-activated potassium conductance (AHP conductance. or gAHP) in regulating repetitive firing. In addition to gAHP, the model also includes five voltage-gated conductances and a system that can reproduce Ca2+ dynamics in the cytoplasm. Conductance kinetics were based on empirical data, and the model reproduced the piecewise linear. steady-state frequency-current relationship (f-I curve). The model revealed that gAHP has a "braking effect" that suppresses spike generation and thereby reduces firing frequency; the magnitude of the reduction in firing frequency is proportional to the temporal average of gAHP activation; and the level of activation depends on the magnitude of the injected current. Moreover, plotting the activation level as a function of injected current produced a bell-shaped curve, and this relationship was essential to the transition of the f-l curve. In conclusion, our study confirms the importance of gAHP to repetitive firing and presents a novel explanation for the piecewise linear f-I curve of motoneurons. • Contrast dependency in perceptual filling-in
    Yutaka Sakaguchi
VISION RESEARCH, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 46, 20, 3304-3312, Oct. 2006, Peer-reviwed, Two experiments were conducted to investigate how stimulus contrast affected the time required for perceptual filling-in. The stimuli consisted of a Gabor patch (target) and a circular grating region (surround). In Experiment 1, the target contrast was manipulated, and the surround contrast was fixed. Filling-in was significantly delayed with higher target contrast, but this delay was observed only when the target contrast exceeded the surround contrast. In Experiment 2, however, a much smaller effect of changing the surround contrast occurred. Possible reasons for this asymmetric effect are discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN PART III-FUNDAMENTAL ELECTRONIC SCIENCE, SCRIPTA TECHNICA-JOHN WILEY & SONS, 89, 7, 19-30, 2006, Peer-reviwed, "Dynamics matching" is a design concept in sensory-motor fusion systems, where the performance is maximized by ad adjustment of the dynamics of the system under the physical and computational constraints. This paper models dynamics matching as all optimization problem and constructs an adaptive acquisition algorithm. A numerical experiment on the target-tracking task using active vision is presented as an example, and it is shown that a reasonable Solution is acquired by the proposed approach. • The minimum endpoint variance trajectory depends on the profile of the signal-dependent noise
    N Iguchi; Y Sakaguchi; F Ishida
BIOLOGICAL CYBERNETICS, SPRINGER, 92, 4, 219-228, Apr. 2005, Peer-reviwed, It has been proposed that the central nervous system determines reaching movement trajectories so as to minimize the positional variance of the endpoint in the presence of signal-dependent noise. The hypothesis well reproduces the empirical movement trajectories for noise to the control signal whose variance is proportional to the second power of the amplitude of the control signal. However, empirical studies do not necessarily exhibit such a simple signal-noise relationship. The studies exhibit a wide distribution of estimates of the value of the exponent. This discrepancy raises the question of how the minimum endpoint variance trajectory depends on the value of the exponent. To address this question, we calculated minimum endpoint variance trajectories in simulations in which the value of the exponent was varied from 0 to 3. We found that the optimal trajectories differed according to the value of the exponent, and the profiles of optimal trajectories gradually diverged from the empirical ones as the value approached 0, though this change was not remarkable for larger values. Moreover, the optimal trajectories failed to replicate Fitts' law when the value was not equal to 2. These results suggest that the acceptability of the minimum endpoint variance theory depends on the value of the exponent in our motor system.

  • Reliability of internal prediction/estimation and its application. I. Adaptive action selection reflecting reliability of value function
    Y Sakaguchi; M Takano
NEURAL NETWORKS, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 17, 7, 935-952, Sep. 2004, Peer-reviwed, This article proposes an adaptive action-selection method for a model-free reinforcement learning system, based on the concept of the reliability of internal prediction/estimation'. This concept is realized using an internal variable, called the Reliability Index (RI), which estimates the accuracy of the internal estimator. We define this index for a value function of a temporal difference learning system and substitute it for the temperature parameter of the Boltzmann action-selection rule. Accordingly, the weight of exploratory actions adaptively changes depending on the uncertainty of the prediction. We use this idea for tabular and weighted-sum type value functions. Moreover, we use the RI to adjust the learning coefficient in addition to the temperature parameter, meaning that the reliability becomes a general basis for meta-learning. Numerical experiments were performed to examine the behavior of the proposed method. The RI-based Q-learning system demonstrated its features when the adaptive learning coefficient and large RI-discount rate (which indicate how the RI values of future states are reflected in the RI value of the current state) were introduced. Statistical tests confirmed that the algorithm spent more time exploring in the initial phase of learning, but accelerated learning from the midpoint of learning. It is also shown that the proposed method does not work well with the actor-critic models. The limitations of the proposed method and its relationship to relevant research are discussed. • Visual field anisotropy revealed by perceptual filling-in
    Y Sakaguchi
VISION RESEARCH, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 43, 19, 2029-2038, Sep. 2003, Peer-reviwed, Four experiments were performed to investigate how the time required for perceptual filling-in varies with the position of the target in the visual field. Conventional studies have revealed that filling-in is facilitated by a target with greater eccentricity, while no systematic studies have examined the effect of polar angle. Experiment I examined the effect of polar angle when the target and surround differed in luminance. Filling-in was facilitated as the target position changed from the horizontal to the vertical meridian. This dependency was more prominent in the upper field than in the lower, although no asymmetry was found between the left and right visual fields. These features were observed in both monocular and binocular, viewing. These results were replicated in a modified stimulus configuration, in which the surround was a circular region concentric with the target (Experiment 2). Moreover, it was confirmed that the asymmetry was not due to fluctuation in the retinal image (i.e., eye movement) (Experiment 3). Finally, Experiment 4 examined whether this anisotropy was observed when two differently oriented gratings were presented in the target and surround regions. Again, filling-in was facilitated for a target close to the vertical meridian, irrespective of the relationship between the target and surround orientations. The underlying mechanism of this anisotropy is discussed from the viewpoints of cortical magnification and neural connections in the visual cortex. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Target/surround asymmetry in perceptual filling-in
    Y Sakaguchi
VISION RESEARCH, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 41, 16, 2065-2077, Jul. 2001, Peer-reviwed, Four experiments examined how differences in the properties of the target and surround affect the time required for perceptual filling-in. They examined differences in luminance, orientation, spatial frequency, and color. A larger target/surround difference delayed filling-in ('feature difference effect'). Interestingly, exchanging the target and surround properties significantly varied the time ('target/surround asymmetry'). Filling-in was facilitated when the target was brighter and closer to the vertical or horizontal than the surround. Little asymmetry was found in the frequency domain, while significant asymmetry was observed for specific color combinations. These effects are discussed with respect to edge adaptation, feature adaptation, balance of neural activities, and contextual modulation. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

JAPANESE JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS PART 2-LETTERS, JAPAN J APPLIED PHYSICS, 37, 3B, L329-L332, Mar. 1998, Peer-reviwed, Transparency and volume perception are important issues in 3-D object perception. We report here a new visual effect in 3-D illusory object perception with binocular viewing, named 'pantomime effect', and introduce a new framework of the effect based on three types of 'sustaining cues'. We also compare sustaining cues with occlusion cues. In addition, the perception of transparent and volumetrical objects was verified by the experiments using another illusory probe stimulus. It was also found that side sustaining cues played an essential role in volume perception, and the transparency in pantomime effect was different from that in multilayer transparent planes depicted by a random dot stereogram.

ADVANCED ROBOTICS, VSP BV, 8, 3, 263-283, 1994, Peer-reviwed, Human haptic perception is not caused by simple mechanical stimulation to the skin; it is achieved by integrating sensory information from various receptors (such as mechano-receptors and thermo-receptors) and by observing objects in various ways. The author constructed sensing systems which simulate human haptic processes in order to clarify the mechanism of such sensory integration and active perception. In this article, first the author formalizes these processes from a theoretical point of view and constructs an 'intentional observation' algorithm on the basis of that formalization. This algorithm is to select appropriate sensors from many sensors based on information criteria to recognize objects mom accurately by fewer observations. Second, the author describes two kinds of haptic sensing systems which recognize objects' materials and surface textures utilizing actively several sensor devices, and shows that the proposed algorithm is effective in these actual systems. Some related problems are also discussed.

  • Representing and Recognizing Figures Based on Constraints from the External World
The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers, 28, 3, 392-400, 1992, Peer-reviwed, When perceiving an object, human beings can construct its internal image from its fragmental features and recognize it based on the image, without observing it all over. In this article, the authors propose a neural network model which constructs internal representation of a given figure and recognizes it based on the representation.
The model consists of a sensory unit, a figure representation field and a recognition layer. The model moves the sensory unit and observes a local feature of the figure. The figure representation field consists of many "feature units", whose activation represents the figure. These units interact through mutual connections which reflect topological structure of the external world. Through the interaction, the field constructs global representation of the figure from the local features observed by the sensory unit.
The recognition layer makes a recognition output using the field activation. It means that the recognition is based not on sensory information itself but on internal representation modulated by the field dynamics. This "internal-representation-based recognition" bears an aspect of human recognition. By imposing external input reflecting "context" to the field, for instance, "contextdependent recognition" is realized.
In addition, the authors propose an active searching algorithm which helps representation construction to advance smoothly. In the course of construction, competition often arises between feature units, especially around edges or corners of the figure, which have significant meaning for constructing the representation. The model can observe "intentionally" such essential parts by moving the sensory unit to the corresponding position. Such competition-invoked searching is a new algorithm for active perception.
The model behavior is investigated through computer simulation. Some related matters on representation in the brain are discussed.

We analyzed neuronal activities of the monkey anterior intraparietal area (AIP) to reveal how the brain represents information related to hand manipulation. Here, we calculated mutual information (MI) between activities of 98 single neurons and various clusters of 6 objects, and examined how MI varied according to different task periods (i.e., fixation, reach and hold). We found that the different types of neurons (i.e., visual-, motor- and visuomotor-neurons) had significant information in different task periods. Moreover, we summed up MI for the populations of each type of neurons, which show temporal relationship among the information processings in different types of neurons. The result of this analysis gives us a novel clue to understand the information stream in the parietal area in sensory-motor control., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 05 Mar. 2008, IEICE technical report, 107, 542, 203-208, Japanese, 0913-5685, 110006783225

  • A Self-Organizing Reinforcement Learning System using Temporal Derivative of Learning Curve (2)
UCHIDA Kazuki; ISHIDA Fumihiko; SAKAGUCHI Yutaka
Learning proceeds efficiently when the ability of learning system matches to the difficulty of the problem to learn. The authors proposed a learning system which autonomously selected the problem to learn so that the performance improvement (i.e., temporal derivative of learning curve) was maximized. The present report focuses on the case that the state transition structure can be represented by binary-trees, and discusses the behavior of the proposed system in relation with the difficulty relation between various problems., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 12 Mar. 2003, IEICE technical report. • Sensory-Motor Fusion Based on Dynamics Matching : Learning of Strategies in Target Tracking Task
OGAWA Naoko; SAKAGUCHI Yutaka; NAMIKI Akio; ISHIKAWA Masatoshi
The authors propose a novel concept named "dynamics matching" for designing sensory-motor fusion system. This means a strategy to adjust adaptively the contents of the information processing and the control to maximize overall performance of the system under constraints such as restricted computational resources, physical properties of the sensor and motor systems and requirements by given tasks. The authors construct an algorithm utilizing reinforcement learning where the system performance is regarded as the "reward." The effect of the proposed concept is illustrated by a numerical experi..., 14 Mar. 2001, IEICE technical report. Neurocomputing, 100, 686, 47-54, Japanese, 0913-5685, 110003233813

  • A Model of Figure-Ground Reversal Perception Based on the Dynamical Role of Visual Attention
    YASUKOCHI Ken; SAKAGUCHI Yutaka
The present study proposes a neural network model which tries to explain figure-ground reversal based on the dynamical characteristics of visual spatial attention. Most of the conventional models on figureground reversal was based on the oscillatiou between two patterns embedded in the network, and dealt with this phenomenon at the "symbolic level". In contrast, the present model has a field for representing, the 3D structure of an object and explains the phenomenon based on the dynamical change in the distribution of spatial attention on this field. The model behavior was examined through numerical experiments. This model is an example of an approach to visual perception based on the framework of "dynamics of attention and perception"., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 15 Mar. 2000, IEICE technical report. • An Attentional Model for Control of Voluntary Movement
    Sakaguchi Yutaka; Nakano Kaoru
When doing voluntary movements, human beings perceive the positions of targets and the states of their bodies through directing their eyes to proper locations on proper occasions. The authors propose a mathematical model of such an information acquisition mechanism in voluntary movements. The model calculates motor commands based on the internal models of the objects, and observes the objects when the internal models becomes less reliable than a required level. The results of numerical experiments show that the proposed model simulates the human behavior in a shape-tracing task., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 1994, IEICE technical report.

IEEE World Congress on Evolutionary Computationに発表した。
