This paper describes the application of neural network for nano-indentation testing to evaluate mechanical properties of multi-layered thin films. The properties of films are evaluated from a set of load-depth curves which is obtained by indentation using spherical indenters having different radii. In this study, finite element simulation of indentation is conducted to provide learning data of the network. Two multi-layered networks are independently used to identify the properties of films. By using the first network, the ranges of estimation are roughly estimated, and the appropriate properties can be determined by the second network. It is demonstrated that Young's moduli of 4-layered films can be successfully determined by the proposed method. This paper presents the development of an integrated programming environment, so called ANetCoDE, for implementing ConCAD system. ANetCoDE is a hybrid agent-oriented programming environment to support the implementation of design agents that can harmonize the deliberative characteristics with the reactive characteristics of agents. The representation techniques for design agents are proposed to be able to accommodate their internal state to the continuously changed design states. By using the method of the analysis of a crack with bridging fibers in unidirectional fiberreinforced composites, which was previously proposed by the authors, the effects of the Young's moduli of fiber and matrix, the volume fraction of fiber, the numbers and locations of the bridging fibers and the frictional shear stress τ at the interface of fiber and matrix on the stress intensity factor of the crack are numerically investigated. The distribution of the reaction forces to the crack surfaces induced by the bridging fibers is also obtained. The degree of the enhancement of the fracture resistance of an orthogonal three-dimensional composite of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy is experimentally determined using a DCB testing method. By analyzing the load-displacement curve and the energy change caused by the breaking of the bridging fiber yarn, the mechanism of the bridging enhancement of the fracture resistance is considered. It was found that the greater the number of bridging yarns in the crack, the greater is the amount of deformation energy per cracking area necessary for crack propagation. An analysis of a crack with bridging fibers in an orthotropic elastic infinite plate is carried out. Based on Lekhnitskii's anisotropic elastic theory, the distributions of the stress and the displacement of the orthotropic elastic infinite plate with a crack are analyzed under a uniform remote tension stress. As well as utilizing the model of fiber pull-out, the relationship between the traction force at a bridging fiber and the crack opening displacement is established. The stress intensity factor KI and the strain energy release rate GI of the crack are obtained by linear elastic fracture mechanics, and the influence factor BK of the bridging for the stress intensity is defined. Sometimes, holes at the bottom land of gears are made for lubrication of gear systems, such as gears in manual transmission where a needle bearing is used between the gear and shaft. In the present study, a pair of spur gears with holes at the bottom land is analyzed by a three-dimensional finite-element method. The distributions of the tooth root stress and the tangential stress at the periphery of holes are obtained. The effects of the addendum modification coefficient, tooth width, number of holes and hole position along the tooth width on the distributions are investigated under the loading condition of a concentrated force and two kinds of gearing with uniform and partial contacts.
