PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 93, 6, 063637-1-063637-7, Jun. 2016, Peer-reviwed, We study the dynamics of fermions loaded in an optical lattice with a superimposed parabolic trap potential. In the recent Hamburg experiments [J. Heinze et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 085302 (2013)] on quantum simulation of photoconductivity, a modulation pulse on the optical lattice transferred part of the population of the lowest band to an excited band, leaving a hole in the particle distribution of the lowest band. The subsequent intricate dynamics of both excited particles and holes can be explained by a semiclassical approach based on the evolution of the Wigner function. Here we provide a more detailed analysis of the dynamics, taking into account the dimensionality of the system and finite-temperature effects, aiming at reproducing experimental results on longer time scales. A semiclassical wave packet is constructed more accurately than in the previous theory. As a result, semiclassical dynamics indeed reproduces experimental data and full quantum numerical calculations with a much better accuracy. In particular, the fascinating phenomenon of collapse and revival of holes is investigated in more detail. We presume that the experimental setup can be used for deeper exploration of nonlinear waves in fermionic gases.

Scientific journal, English - Wave-packet dynamics of noninteracting ultracold bosons in an amplitude-modulated parabolic optical lattice
Tomotake Yamakoshi; Shinichi Watanabe
Physical Review A, Americal Physica Society, 91, 063614-1-063614-8, 12 Jun. 2015, Peer-reviwed, The recent Aarhus experiment [Phys. Rev. A 88, 023620 (2013)] produced wave packets by applying amplitude modulation to a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) of Rb87 using an optical lattice. The present paper renders a theoretical account of this experimental production of wave packets and their subsequent time evolution, focusing on a one-dimensional noninteracting bosonic system as a fundamental starting point for accurate quantum analysis. Since experimental manipulation requires efficient wave-packet creation, we introduce the “single-Q Rabi model” to give a simple and reliable description of the interband transition. As a natural extension, we demonstrate enhancement of the wave-packet production by the “two-step Rabi oscillation method” using either one or two frequencies. The subsequent time evolution is affected by the intertwining of Bragg reflection and the Landau–Zener transition at each band gap, which is analyzed with the aid of a semiclassical theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 085302 (2013)].

The collision with the fast proton or antiproton is thus rigorously treated by the time-dependent method. Inclusion of s and p states seems to almost fully account for the difference between proton-impact and antiproton-impact double ionization cross-sections. The total ionization cross-sections, on the other hand, are shown to coincide for both projectiles, indicating the complementary nature of the single and double ionization processes. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 60, 2, 1113-1123, Aug. 1999, Peer-reviwed, We analyze the problem of suppression of reflections within the numerical propagation of wave packets using finite atomiclike pseudostate expansions. Artificial reflections at effective "walls" and reentering of probability flux into the interaction region represents a major limitation for the study of long-time evolution of atomic ionization processes. We propose two methods, the repetitive projection method (RPM) and Siegert pseudostate (SPS) propagation, and study their efficiency in Suppressing reflections. It is shown that the quantum Zeno effect sets a limit on the efficiency of the RPM as well as of masking functions. For the exactly solvable propagation of a radial-free wave packet, we show that both the SPS and the RPM provide almost complete suppression of reflections without appreciable distortion in the physically relevant region of coordinate space. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 56, 5, 3559-3568, Nov. 1997, Peer-reviwed, We investigate hierarchical representation of three-electron radial excitations, relying on the replacement of a sequence of ordered individual electron radial coordinates by a hierarchical sequence of hyperspherical radial variables. In the spirit of the hyperspherical method we argue that the latter variables allow adiabatic quasiseparability of the three-electron wave function. We examine this by approximately evaluating hyperspherical adiabatic potential curves and channel functions for the Li(s(3)) configuration. The hierarchical representation permits one to display manifold aspects of the triply excited states with a pair of radial quantum numbers. [S1050-2947(97)02011-8].
Scientific journal, English - Ab initio study of interelectronic correlations in electron-impact ionization of hydrogen
D Kato; S Watanabe
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 56, 5, 3687-3700, Nov. 1997, Peer-reviwed, Electron-impact ionization of hydrogen is investigated based upon ab initio quantal calculations. In the present calculations, strong interelectronic correlations are represented by the hyperspherical channel functions and accurate numerical solutions of the two-electron atomic Schrodinger equation are obtained by means of the smooth-variable-discretization method in combination with the R-matrix propagation method. The double-continuum boundary condition is represented by matching the numerical solutions to asymptotic solutions, which are described by superpositions of approximate asymptotic channel functions. We obtained the ionization threshold law, which is in good agreement with Wannier's conjecture, and also an almost uniform energy distribution in double-continuum states at low energies, say similar to 0.1 a.u. At low energies, the angular distributions of the electrons in double-continuum states of S-1(e) localize where the interelectronic angular distance theta(12)=pi. As the energy increases, the binary-encounter and the dipolelike transition mechanisms manifest themselves in the angular distribution. The spin-averaged total ionization cross section and the spin asymmetry from the present method agree well with experimental measurements as well as the convergent-close-coupling result, while for the spin asymmetry there is a noticeable disagreement with the hidden-crossing result at moderately low energies. An essential role of the potential ridge during the ionization process is apparent in the convergence of the present calculations. [S1050-2947(97)02611-5].
Scientific journal, English - Elimination of hyperspherical ghost states caused by a closed-shell core: Test with the restricted Temkin-Poet model
S Watanabe; T Ebara
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 55, 1, 175-182, Jan. 1997, Peer-reviwed, Ghost states arise in applications of the hyperspherical close-coupling method to atoms with two valence electrons outside a closed-shell core. A rigorous formulation of ghost-state elimination is proposed on the basis of a projection operator. Its practical implementation exploits the R-matrix propagator. The procedure is tested for the Temkin-Poet s(2) model by removing a target orbital regarded as an occupied core state. The partial success of the recently proposed scheme of Zhou and Lin [Phys. Rev. A 51, 1286 (1995)] is accounted for as due to an extreme insensitivity of the R-matrix states on the projection parameter.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 53, 4, 2345-2358, Apr. 1996, Peer-reviwed, We study electron emission cross sections of He decaying to He+(1s) in the N=2 and 3 manifolds produced by fast proton and antiproton impact. Ab initio close-coupling calculations are carried out using the impact-parameter method. The electronic state during collision is expanded in terms of He wave functions obtained by the hyperspherical close-coupling method. The theory reproduces experimental findings regarding both the background and doubly excited resonances well. The resonance shapes are found to depend sensitively on the sign of the projectile charge. This is due to interference between the partial waves of the ejected electron. We analyze excitation paths that eventually lead to another interference effect between continuum and doubly excited states. We demonstrate importance of both the bound and continuum states as intermediate states.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 49, 2, 1021-1028, Feb. 1994, Peer-reviwed, We apply the close-coupling method in terms of the hyperspherical coordinates;to the two-electron system H-. A two-dimensional matching procedure is used to connect the close-coupling wave function to an independent-electron wave function in the asymptotic region. The latter is described as the wave function of a detached electron moving in a dipole potential field of the neutral hydrogen atom. The total photodetachment cross sections and the partial cross sections for the production of the H atoms in different states n are calculated up to the n=4 hydrogenic threshold. The results obtained in the length and acceleration forms agree within about three significant figures. The magnitude and shape of the P-1 degrees shape resonance just above the n=2 threshold are found to depend sensitively on the initial-state wave function. This appears to be one of the reasons for a disparity among the cross sections in the literature. The present result improves greatly on the existing computational results. The relative magnitudes of the, partial cross sections for the production of H (n=1,2,3) atoms below the n=4 threshold are substantially different from the only previous results of the eigenchannel R-matrix calculations [H. R. Sadeghpour, C. H. Greene, and M. Cavagnero, Phys. Rev. A 45, 1587 (1992)]. The present results on both partial and total cross sections are in excellent agreement with experiments.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 48, 1, 841-844, Jul. 1993, Peer-reviwed, We present a detailed theoretical study of the very narrow A = - and A = 0 series seen in the recently reported high-resolution photoionization spectrum of He below the N = 2 threshold [M. Domke et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 69, 1171 (1992)]. The hyperspherical close-coupling method combined with the multichannel quantum-defect theory is used and the photoionization cross section has been calculated over a wide energy range with high efficiency. Our results are in excellent agreement with the experimental data and compare favorably with recent accurate theoretical works.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 46, 7, 3758-3761, Oct. 1992, Peer-reviwed, The previously reported hyperspherical close-coupling method is extended to treat dipole transitions. In so doing, we introduce the dipole density function, which permits us to visualize various components of the dipole matrix as a function of the hyperradius and to study the convergence rate of the length and acceleration forms. In the adiabatic approximation, the acceleration form is shown to be always inferior to the length form regardless of the quality of the adiabatic wave function. We present detailed comparisons with other high-precision theoretical results for the bound-bound process He(1sns) + hnu --> He(1 smp). Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is attained for the photoionization of He above the He+(1s) threshold.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 46, 5, 2693-2699, Sep. 1992, Peer-reviwed, The complicated quadratic Zeeman spectrum in a laboratory magnetic field is analyzed with the aid of accurate Coulomb functions. Different Rydberg manifolds are masked by the generalized Gailitis average based on the multichannel quantum-defect theory. Fundamental resonances are thereby accentuated. An efficient and reliable numerical procedure is developed for evaluating the negative-energy Coulomb functions and their derivatives. The method is based on the three-term recursions and employs Steed's forward-propagation method [A.R. Barnett et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 8, 377 (1974)] as well as the backward-propagation method of Stegun and Abramowitz [Phys. Rev. 98, 1851 (1955)].

The method provides the quantum-defect parameters directly, and opens up the possibility of accounting for various spectral features quantum mechanically.

Shinichi Watanabe; Alexander P. Itin
By resonantly associating laser-cooled atoms, it is now possible to produce diatomic molecules referred to as Fano-Feshbach molecules. The absolute ground state of a polar molecule having been achieved with the Fano-Feshbach molecule as a seed, the coldmolecule production, owing to its groundbreaking opportinities, is attracting much attention. However, the molecular production takes place amongst many ultracold atoms, thus necessitating the examination of the many-particle effect. We present how the behavior based on the famous two-state Landau-Zener formula for the "atom+atom" and "diatom" states gets modified due to the nonlinear dynamics of many atoms which tends to soften the adiabaticity., The Physical Society of Japan (JPS), Jan. 2011, 日本物理学会誌, 66, 1, 42-45, Japanese, Peer-reviwed, Introduction other, 0029-0181, 110008006971, AN00196952
