2017 IEEE MTT-S INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MICROWAVES FOR INTELLIGENT MOBILITY (ICMIM), IEEE, 115-118, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Authors have developed the stepped multiple frequency Complementary Phase Code (CPC) radar system. The unique radar modulation/demodulation method can achieve both a high range resolution and a long-range detection performance with a narrow band receiver compared with the transmission bandwidth. In this paper, the experimental verification to compare the detection range performances between Stepped multiple frequency CPC and Pulse compression was conducted. The experimental results indicated that the proposed modulation was 1.72 times superior to Pulse compression in the detection range performance on the condition where the transmission bandwidth, observation time, peak power, code length (the number of chips of switching codes), and the number of total pulses were set to be the same.

2017 IEEE MTT-S INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MICROWAVES FOR INTELLIGENT MOBILITY (ICMIM), IEEE, 41-44, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Nonlinear effects on correlation sidelobes of receiver signals for pulse radars, which were UWB pulse radar, pulse compression radar and mainly phase coded high pulse repetition frequency (PCHPRF) radar were discussed. Sidelobes of pulse radars increases in the case of nonlinear system with some other radio frequency (RF) parameters. We investigated on the parameters verified decision parameters for these sidelobe characteristics by using RF simulation method considering nonlinear effects.

電気学会論文誌C, The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 136, 4, 532-541, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Multiple Frequency Continuous Wave (MFCW) is one of the efficient methods having both long range performance and range resolution. In this paper, the transmission sequences and signal processing to expand the observable maximum velocity and maximum range of MFCW are described. At first, we propose Hybrid Sequence MFCW in which frequency steps for the velocity estimation are added to the conventional MFCW to expand the observable maximum velocity. And then we also propose the signal processing using two initial frequencies to expand the observable maximum range. We show the initial experimental results on a general road. The results indicated that both proposed methods worked well on the field experiments.

The initial experimental results on the railway environments are also shown. The proposed methods obtained stable estimation results even in the situation where there exists shielding objects. The nonlinear least square method with an unknown quantity had the smallest standard deviation in the environment where the height of ballast track bed was not changed. The nonlinear least square method with two unknowns had the smallest bias errors between the estimation results and GPS speedometer.

IEEJ Journal of Industry Applications, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 4, 2, 91-97, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Landing radar that measures the velocity and the altitude of the airframe has been developed for the sensor, which helps safe landing. In applications where the observation range is limited to a very short range such as the final stage of landing, we can expect to obtain a high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. In these situations, the multiple frequency continuous wave (CW) with MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm is considered to be useful for achieving a high resolution with a low sampling rate of several tens of kilohertz and relatively low-speed signal processing. In this paper, the multiple frequency CW with 1D and 2D MUSIC algorithm to measure the altitude is described. The simulation shows that the bias errors in both methods are less than 1% of the altitudes. The random errors of 1D MUSIC and 2D MUSIC are 1.3%-1.7% and 0.8%-1.0%, respectively. The random errors of 2D MUSIC are smaller than those of 1D MUSIC. We also show the fundamental experimental results obtained in an athletic field using the radar fitted on a cage lifted by a crane. We could obtain stable estimation results on altitudes between 1.0m and 7.0 m. These results indicate that the multiple frequency CW radar is one of the effective tools for landing radar in the final phase of landing.

A new processing technique was implemented which uses the distribution of slopes of the phase difference versus frequency to locate the radiation source. By using this technique, frequency components which are not due to lightning can be excluded and low as well as high amplitude sources are located. As a result, both positive breakdown and negative breakdown are located, and negative recoil leaders (recoil leaders) are visualized in great detail. The recoil leaders which continue into the positive charge region are seen to slow their propagation and dim their radiation as they cross the flash initiation region. Analysis of the relative received power of the different breakdown types, negative leaders, recoil leaders, and positive leaders, also can be made. In both the intracloud and cloud-to-ground flash, the modes of the distributions of received power for negative leaders, recoil leaders, and positive leaders were approximately the same. The brightest emissions seen from the positive leader were substantially lower than the brightest emission seen from the negative leader. The results also indicate that positive leaders as well as lower elevation negative leader emit more low frequency radiation than recoil leaders and high-elevation negative leaders. By continuously sampling the VHF waveform, the upgraded VHF DITF locates many weak sources which the previous system was not capable of locating.

JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-ATMOSPHERES, AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 119, 6, 3134-3165, Mar. 2014, Peer-reviwed, The VHF Broadband Digital Interferometer developed by Osaka University has been improved to allow continuous sampling over the entire duration of a lightning flash and to utilize a generalized cross-correlation technique for determining the lightning source directions. Time series waveforms of 20-80 MHz signals received at three orthogonally located antennas are continuously digitized over multisecond intervals, as opposed to sequences of short-duration triggers. Because of the coherent nature of the measurements, radiation sources are located down into the ambient receiver and environmental noise levels, providing a quantum leap in the ability to study lightning discharge processes. When postprocessed using cross correlation, the measurements provide angular uncertainties less than 1 degrees and time resolution better than 1 mu s. Special techniques have been developed to distinguish between actual lightning sources and noise events, with the result being that on the order of 50,000-80,000 radiation sources are located for a typical lightning flash. In this study, two-dimensional interferometer observations of a classic bilevel intracloud flash are presented and combined with three-dimensional Lightning Mapping Array observations to produce a quasi 3-D map of lightning activity with the time resolution of the interferometer. As an example of the scientific utility of the observations, results are presented for the 3-D progression speed of negative leaders associated with intracloud K-leaders.

IEEJ Transactions on Fundamentals and Materials, 133, 3, 132-141, 2013, Peer-reviwed, We have been designing and developing a 3-D lightning location system based on the broadband digital interferometry technique in LF bands. The LF broadband digital interferometer (LF DITF) consists of four or more LF receivers which detect electromagnetic (EM) waves in a wide frequency range from 400 Hz to 1 MHz associated with lightning discharges. Since each receiver detects EM waves in LF, the LF DITF is able to locate lightning discharges in several hundred kilometers. During the winter season in 2010-2011, a simultaneous observation of a LF DITF, a VHF DITF, and Rogowski coils was conducted in Hokuriku, Japan, which borders the Sea of Japan, for evaluation of the LF DITF for locating upward leaders and further understanding of winter lightning in Japan. We show the time series variation of the cases of a bipolar lightning flash and of an upward negative flash. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Journal of Atmospheric Electricity, Society of Atmospheric Electricity of Japan, 33, 2, 91-105, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Broadband radio interferometers have been developed to locate the sources of VHF/UHF radiation from lightning discharges in three spatial dimensions (3D) and time. The VHF broadband interferometer locates sources of radiation events at VHF band by extracting the differences of phases at various frequency components of Fourier spectra between a pair of antennas. Lightning images are derived by sensing the electromagnetic waves radiated from a lightning discharge process such as negative stepped leader. In this paper, a VHF broadband digital interferometer has been used to estimate the 3D lightning location from only one site. The site consists of three broadband antennas and a GPS receiver. As one of the observation results, a negative downward cloud-to-ground lightning flash will be presented and located using only one site.

Two types of negative leaders, termed "long-duration" and "short-duration" leaders, were imaged by the VHF interferometers during the IS of the two flashes. There were three leaders that had relatively long durations of more than a few milliseconds. These three leaders were not accompanied by a significant change of channel-base current during their early stages of development, indicating that they corresponded to intracloud (IC) discharges that were not connected to the grounded triggered-lightning channel. Two of these three leaders eventually connected to the triggered-lightning channel and initiated initial continuous current (ICC) pulses. The third long-duration leader apparently developed from the vicinity of an isolated negative charge region toward an upper-level positive charge region and toward a branch of the grounded channel; it served to bridge the positive charge region and the triggered-lightning channel, resulting in the opposite polarity portion of the bipolar ICC. The short-duration negative leaders had durations of some hundreds of microseconds. These negative leaders apparently recoiled along the conductive channels created by branches of the upward positive leader (UPL); they initiated ICC pulses when the grounded channel was sufficiently conductive. It follows that ICC pulses can be initiated either by recoil leaders or via interception of separate in-cloud leaders by a grounded current-carrying channel.
Scientific journal, English - Propagation characteristics of lightning stepped leaders developing in charge regions and descending out of charge regions

We divided a stepped leader into two parts; the first part is a stepped leader propagating almost horizontally in the charge regions (ICR) of thunderclouds and the last part is a stepped leader descending out of the charge region (OCR). The VHF observation indicates that the channels of the stepped leaders OCR located by the DITFs were clearly broader than the channels of the stepped leaders ICR and dart leaders, indicating that the stepped leaders OCR descended in a heavily branched manner. High speed video camera images of a CG flash support the idea that stepped leaders OCR descend in a heavily branched manner. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Scientific journal, English - Estimation for Charge Distributions related with Individual Lightning Discharges using VHF Broadband Digital Interferometer

Journal of Atmospheric Electricity, Society of Atmospheric Electricity of Japan, 32, 2, 55-63, 2012, Peer-reviwed, We propose a new method of estimation for the amount of charge removed by individual lightning flashes in thunderclouds by means of three-dimensional (3D) VHF images and the associated electric field (E-field) change on the ground. In this method, we assume a reasonable assumption that the VHF sources located by the VHF broadband digital interferometers (VHF DITFs) correspond to charge transfer of each breakdown. We examine 3D VHF images recorded in Darwin, Australia and estimate the amount of charge removed by lightning discharges in thunderclouds. The average amount of charge removed in a CG and an IC flash is 28 C and 33 C, respectively. These results are in reasonable agreement with previous estimations for the amount of charge transferred using E-field measurements. The charge density removed by an IC flash was also estimated to be 4.3 × 10-10 C/m3 for the positive charge region and 5.8 × 10-9 C/m3 for the negative charge region, respectively. The estimation results indicate the charge structure before the flash occurred in thunderclouds.

To further understand the effects of charge distributions on lightning discharge, the authors conducted a very high-frequency (VHF) lightning observation campaign during the 2006/07 monsoon in Darwin, Australia, using a VHF broadband digital interferometer (DITF). A C-band polarimetric weather radar to estimate the precipitation profiles such as hydrometeor classification was operated by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Research Centre. Cloud-to-ground (CG) and intracloud (IC) flashes were initiated from the outer and the inner parts of the upper side of the graupel regions, respectively. In the cases of CO flashes, the negative leaders travel first about 10 km horizontally through positive charge regions and then begin to bend toward the ground when they reach the edge of the positive charge regions where there is no graupel region underneath. In contrast, in the cases of the IC flashes the negatively charged graupel regions block the downward developments of negative leaders. It is noted that positive charge regions could facilitate the extension of the horizontal negative leader. These results may suggest that lightning flash types are closely dependent on their initiation locations and the surrounding charge distributions. The experimental results are consistent with other previous observation results and charge model simulations.

It enables us to locate the impulsive VHF radiation sources caused by lightning discharges with extremely high resolutions. As a result of the VHF observations during the 2007-2008 winter season in the Japan Sea coastal area, cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes that neutralize multiple charge regions inside thunderclouds are visualized by the VHF broadband DITF. The first flash is the positive CG flash that neutralizes multiple positive charge regions in a flash. The second flash is the bipolar lightning flash that neutralizes both positive and negative charge inside thunderclouds. In the case of bipolar lightning flashes, some tens millisecond after the return strokes, the subsequent negative breakdowns initiate from the proximities of the initiation points of the preceding negative stepped leaders. It was also found that the altitudes of negative charge regions are lower than 2km. The bipolar lightning flashes observed in this campaign neutralize positive charge after lowering the negative charge to the ground. © 2010 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

This monitoring is mainly utilized the Ku-band broadband radar (BBR) and the VHF broadband digital interferometer (DITF). The BBR can accurately measure the radar reflectivity factor and the mean Doppler velocity with 5 m resolution over a range from 40 m to several kilometers for 10 W power using a pulse compression technique. The two or more DITFs make us visualize lightning channel propagations in three dimensions. Moreover, we add new functions that integrate these observation data and disclose integration analyses results with the quasi real-time information disclosure system. Initial observations for severe storms with lightning during summer and winter thunderstorm season by these monitoring instruments indicate that we obtain detailed precipitation distribution and detect active convective cells with lightning discharges. ©2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
