  • Plant Bridge: Connecting Separated Objects Using Plant Growth

    Last, Biomimetics, MDPI AG, 10, 5, 321-321, 15 May 2025, In recent years, there has been development in bio-hybrid actuators that utilize living organisms themselves, as opposed to biomimetics. However, most of the plants and animals used for these purposes are no longer actually alive, as their corpses, parts, or seeds are used. There is research on the use of microorganisms, but it is limited to use in building materials. Here, we focused on plants in terms of their ease of growth with water and light and their ability to change shape significantly from seed through growth. Therefore, we propose a material that incorporates living plants. The objective of this research is to realize the shape change of this material by using the property of plants to grow toward light. In the experiment, we confirmed that plants growing from two devices cross-linked between the devices by controlling the direction of growth using peas. The bridged plants did not break when a mass of up to 575 g was placed on it and indicated a load-bearing capacity of more than 6.6 times from the mass ratio. Then, it is demonstrated that the robot could cross over that.

  • A Bagworm-Inspired Robot That Acquires Its Exterior from External Environments

    Last, Biomimetics, MDPI AG, 10, 4, 252-252, 20 Apr. 2025, Peer-reviwed, In this research, we propose a bagworm-inspired robot that can acquire its exterior by incorporating various objects from the surrounding environment into its skin. This study was inspired by the bagworm, the larva of the giant bagworm moth, which wraps itself around straw and other materials to use as a nest. When the robot is active outdoors, it is surrounded by natural materials such as sand, fallen leaves, and pieces of wood, and can change its skin by attaching or detaching these materials as needed. In the previous study, the authors developed a camouflage robot that assimilates with the outside world by incorporating natural environmental sand. In this study, by using a water-soluble adhesive as the adhesive material, it is possible to take in a larger number of external substances than before. We also conducted experiments with natural materials, including leaves and pebbles, and confirmed that the robot could pick them up. We expect that by developing these functions, robots will not only have camouflage capabilities but also the ability to reinforce their own skin like bagworms.

  • A Sheet-Shaped Transforming Robot That Can Be Thrown from the Air

    Last, Biomimetics, MDPI AG, 9, 5, 287-287, 11 May 2024, In this paper, we describe a sheet-shaped throwable transforming robot. Sheet-type robots can change their shape to perform tasks according to the situation. Therefore, they are expected to be useful in places with many restrictions, such as disaster sites. However, most of them can only move slowly on the ground. Therefore, in order to actually deliver the robot to the disaster site, it must be carried manually. To solve this problem, we are developing a sheet-shaped robot that can be thrown from the sky. Previously developed prototypes could only move in the forward direction, and the transition from falling to walking was complicated and uncertain. In this paper, we report on a new prototype that improves on these shortcomings.

  • Non-Electrically Driven Acoustic Actuator

    Actuators, MDPI AG, 13, 4, 148-148, 16 Apr. 2024, Nuclear power plants have high radiation levels and humans cannot work directly on them. Therefore, it is necessary to establish effective repair work methods. One promising approach is the use of disaster relief robots. However, strong radiation affects circuits and electronic devices. Because typical robots contain electrical circuits and are controlled by radio waves, they are difficult to use in highly radioactive environments. In this study, we propose a non-electrically driven acoustic actuator that does not use electronic circuits and is driven by sound waves. To realize this goal, we have investigated a sound wave drive using a cylindrical container.

  • Prototype Disaster Response Robot with Variable Size and Rigidity

When transporting such robots, transportation by aircraft is sometimes desirable because land routes are not always safe. The performance of disaster response robots is constantly improving; however, their volume and mass tend to increase, which makes current disaster response robots unsuitable for air transportation. Thus, robots with variable size and rigidity should be developed to facilitate effective and efficient air transport. Therefore, we developed a lightweight robot that can be stored in a small space. The prototype robot is composed of a lightweight sponge that can be vacuum compressed to save space during transportation and can be deployed from the air. After being transported to the site, the robot can return to its original size by opening the package and releasing it from compression. In addition, the robot’s rigidity is realized using UV-curing resin. The robot is also equipped with a vibration propulsion mechanism, and we confirmed that the robot can move using this mechanism. Furthermore, the robot was found to be able to change direction and carry lightweight objects.

    Applied System Innovation, 1, 4, 41, 22 Oct. 2018, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, a water driven soft actuator is introduced. Soft actuators driven by various external stimuli, such as air pressure, temperature, pH, electric field, and light have been reported in the past. Although they are very attractive, they often require hard external devices for driving and the response speeds are often slow. The developed water driven actuator was with sodium polyacrylate wrapped by stretchable meshed nylon. Through some experiments, it was confirmed that swell and shrink phenomena of the developed device occur depending on the fluid flow. The phenomena could be found when adequate quantity of sodium polyacrylate was inside of the nylon. The amount of sodium polyacrylate that is required for the phenomenon was investigated. Through the experiments, it was confirmed that the displacement and the response speed of the swell and shrink were large and fast, respectively, in spite of its simple implementation.

  • ソフトロボティクス技術を組みこんだ空中散布可能な災害支援ロボットの技術基盤の構築

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 基盤研究(B), 本研究では近年大きな注目を集めるソフトロボティクス技術を組みこんだ空中散布可能な災害支援ロボットの実現を目指し,ソフトロボティクスに関する申請者の過去の研究成果を踏まえ,材料特性,剛性制御,形状設計,駆動原理,動力確保など多面的な観点から課題解決の可能性を検討している. 今年度は初年度に購入した粘度計や引張試験機,実験評価,および,解析のための計算機,ロボット作成や材料加工のために利用する3Dプリンタなど資材を利用し,基盤技術に関する検討を進めた。申請者がこれまでに開発してきた折り紙ロボットをベースとした空中散布機構とその歩行形態への変形,衝突時に機構的に力を逃がす構造の実装,ダイラタント流体による剛性制御,生体模倣による自己修復機構,天然材料のみを構成材料として利用した非電気駆動ロボットなどの複数の研究テーマについてそれぞれ一定の進展があった. 折り紙ロボットをベースとした空中散布構造については植物の翼果の構造を模倣し,回転落下を実現するため物理モデルの作成と落下速度に与える開発プロトタイプの物理パラメータの抽出、翼角に応じた落下速度の違いに関する検証実験を行った.落下後の変形についても検討を加え,地上での移動実験についても検証した. 機構的に力を逃がす構造については柔軟素材による衝撃吸収効果と動作による衝撃吸収効果の相乗効果を狙い,それらを組み合わせた衝突回避の手法について検討を加えた.ダイラタント流体においては,流体の制御による粘度制御の可能性について調査した.生体模倣による自己修復については生物の血液による凝固とそれによる修復を模倣した自己修復機構について検討を行った., 20H02412

  • 非電気系により駆動する自壊型ロボットによる侵入不可能領域の構造物補修の実現

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 挑戦的研究(萌芽), 本研究では従来型ロボットが侵入不可能な領域の構造物の補修に焦点を当て,非電気系により駆動する自壊型ロボットによる侵入不可能領域の構造物補修の実現をその目標として定め,非電気駆動アクチュエータにより駆動し,自らの構造そのものを修復材料として用いる自壊型ロボットの実現可能性を明らかにすることを目的としている. 前年度に行った音波を用いたロボットを動かすための動作原理の調査と駆動周波数の特定結果,および,この現象を利用した非電気駆動で水上利用可能なロボットの設計とその挙動について国際会議で発表を行った. また、自壊ロボットの実現のため、アルギン酸ナトリウムと乳酸カルシウムのゲル化反応によるプロトタイプとゼラチンのカプセルに修復材を入れたプロトタイプを作成し,その修復性能について調査した.これらの成果については国内会議で発表を行った. また、前年度の実験では実現できなかった地上でのロボットの駆動に向け、共振を利用した音波駆動型アクチュエータの駆動に関する検討を行った.実験ではアクチュエータの駆動源となる共鳴器の共振周波数について理論・実験双方から検討を行い、その周波数の特定を行った.また、この共振周波数でのアクチュエータの挙動についていくつかのプロトタイプを設計し、地上での前後への往復運動や直進運動の実現可能性について調査した.実験の結果,地上でのロボットの駆動についてその可能性を示唆する結果が得られた., 20K21020
