International conference proceedings, English - Data-Driven Analysis of the Development of Linguistic Features in Research Articles on Optics
Sebastien Louvigne; Shi Jie
2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 516-520, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Researchers must constantly produce academic publications to promote their contributions and findings. The Research Article (RA) genre consists of sub-genres based on the typical IMRAD (Introduction, Method, Result and Discussion) structure that is commonly used for research in science and engineering. Researchers still find difficulties in learning systematically how to write RAs during university education. Although essential for teaching, learning, and applications, the genre-based analysis of the RA genre is still considered to be difficult and complex. In order to assist EST students and researchers in building the structure of their RA and communicating ideas with appropriate linguistic expressions, and as part of a longitudinal research, this study focuses on the analysis of RAs based on rhetorical moves and the comparison with other RAs on the same domain of expertise. This study analyzed 1,384 articles from the Journal of Optics between 2002 and 2004 using an originally developed corpus tool, ULC (Universal Learning Concordancer). Word lists, n-grams, clusters, and words in context are going to be displayed among others. Results are discussed in comparison with previous stages of this longitudinal study.
International conference proceedings, English - Adopting a SFL-oriented approach for evaluating genre-based academic abstracts of EST undergraduate students in Japan
Uma Maheswari Rajagopalan; Jie Shi
2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 510-515, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Research abstract is a text of foremost importance to students of science and engineering. However, explicit teaching of it tends to be missing in EGP and EGAP curricula of general Japanese English education. This paper reports the evaluation of abstracts written by 3rd-year students in an undergraduate ESP course at a Japanese university of science and engineering. At first, students were taught the required generic moves for a research abstract (RA). Next, students were asked to practice deconstructing abstracts into moves within the classroom as well as with abstracts collected by themselves. Finally, students constructed their own abstracts. Here, in order to construct one's own abstract, each student was asked to select an experiment done towards his or her disciplinary curriculum and use the experimental procedure, results and implications in writing the moves of the abstract. A total of twenty abstracts were analyzed for the presence of the required moves and the sequence of the generic moves. Difficulties in students' abstract writings were evaluated using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as a framework for the analysis. SFL as a theory of language views language as a resource for making meaning and does linguistic analysis paying attention to different lexico-grammatical structures in constructing meanings and also the context. Students' abstracts were analyzed for different SFL features namely, ideational, interpersonal and textual modes. In particular, the focus was given to the usage of hedges and modality as research abstracts contain modality and hedges. In addition, a clause by clause analysis of students' abstracts revealed common errors such as, singular-plural mismatch, referencing, missing and wrong preposition, improper use of lexis and mistake in verbal group. In the talk, identified errors and the pedagogical ramifications in teaching abstracts will be discussed.
International conference proceedings, English - Common Errors in Research Presentation Slides of Japanese Graduate Students
Shi Jie; Yoshimasa A. Ono
2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 521-526, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Invited, English has undoubtedly become the science and research lingua franca in the world in both oral and written communication. The capacity of English of scientists significantly affects the quality of research papers and presentations much more seriously than before. The global advancement of scientific research demands scientists to conduct oral presentations and write presentation slides by themselves without using professional translators for reasons such as technical accuracy and speed rather than finance. Scientists writing their own slides for academic presentations in English at international conferences has become a norm in the new millennium. As educational institutions that prepare students for such a demand in real life, universities in Japan have started to offer courses to graduate students that explicitly teach and train the skills needed for making academic presentations. Most of such courses focus on the oral deliver aspect as it is most challenging and time-consuming for students to improve. Hence, little time could be provided for explicit, systematic and individualized instruction on how to make slides error-free. As a result, many EFL (English as a Foreign Language) graduate students of science and engineering background are less aware or unaware of the problems on their slides and neglect the common errors on the slide. This presenters of this research are ESP (English for Specific Purposes) teachers at universities in Japan and have extensive teaching experiences with EST (English for Science and Technology) students at graduate school level at top universities in Japan. This paper summarizes the common errors made by Japanese graduate students of engineering majors and to offer practical techniques for making effective presentation slides.

2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 527-532, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The shifting of English education at tertiary level in China from the traditional General English (GE) education which tends to focus on the fundamental knowledge of English language, basic language skills and standardized tests to ESP (English for Specific Purposes)-oriented education that pays attention to the needs of the most important stakeholder of education, the students. ESP-oriented education considers needs analysis to be the foremost important step for designing a curriculum especially for students who are non-English majors. ESP curriculumdesign thus begins with the various stakeholders, i.e. program management, course designers and teachers, and the disciplinary faculty, thoroughly analyzing the disciplinary requirements for students. This study reports a case study of EST (English for Science and Technology) curriculum revision for a school of science and engineering set up as part of a special national project at a top university in China. The purpose of the revision is to enhance the education of specific academic genres and research skills and to correlate these aspects with the disciplinary needs and subjects. Due the limitation of credits, the number of English subjects was at a minimum, which posed great difficulty in the process of curriculum design. Extra-curricular sessions are added to provide students with more opportunities to learn and practice specific EST and research skills in conjunction with their disciplinary programs such as paper reading and presentation and thesis writing.
International conference proceedings, English - An overview of supplementary teaching materials for advanced EST students in Japan
Yu Yan; Shi Jie
2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 164-169, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Invited, EST (English for Science and Technology) is an important area of ESP in Japan. The success of EST courses for science and technology/engineering disciplines is partially dependent on the choices of teaching materials. As shown in previous research done by the same presenters of this study in ICAMechs 2014, the quantity of teaching materials for lower and intermediate levels of EST courses in Japan is considered to be satisfactory though the concerns over the quality and variations of technical disciplines still exist. This research is a continuation of the investigation of teaching materials for EST courses in Japan with a focus on the supplementary or reference materials for advanced students of EST at Japanese universities. This study aims to conduct an overview of the market available reference hooks for advanced EST students at Japanese universities. The categories of the overview include languages used, publication information, main content themes/topics and/or skills, target audience/level of English, and length.
International conference proceedings, English - Profiling Japanese EST students' vocabulary ability using the New General Service List Test (NGSLT) and the New Academic Word List Test (NAWLT)
Shin'ichi Hashimoto; Yu Yan; Shi Jie; Zhan Haiyan
2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 170-173, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Understanding the vocabulary profiles of students is an important point for improving classroom-based pedagogy as well as materials development based on students' abilities and needs in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). As the second phase of a longitudinal research to assess Japanese university students' vocabulary competency, the researchers collected data on the performance of second and third-year students majoring in science and engineering on the New General Service List Test (NGSLT) and the New Academic Word List Test (NAWLT) developed by Phil Bennett and Tim Stoeckel in 2015 using words from the New General Service List 1.01 (NGSL 1.01) and the New Academic Word List (NAWL) developed by Charles Browne, Brent Culligan and Joseph Phillips in 2014. The NGSL 1.01 consists of 2,801 of the most frequently-appearing words in general use, and is a revision of the original General Service List (about 2,000 words) which was compiled by Michael West in 1953. The NWAL consists of 963 frequently-appearing words in academic text, and is a revision of the original Academic Word List (570 words) which was compiled by Averil Coxhead in 2000. Both the NGSLT and NAWLT are diagnostic tests of written receptive knowledge of the New General Service List and the New Academic Word List respectively. The NGSLT and NAWLT use the same specifications as the Vocabulary Size Test (VST) which was developed by Paul Nation and David Beglar in 2007, and have relatively good test reliability. This paper introduces the background about the tests, the participants in the study, and the data collection method. It also interprets the results of the collected scores, and discusses the implications of the results between departments and years. In future studies, the researchers hope to find ways to perceive the vocabulary abilities of students in their particular ESP fields. By doing so, they can be better informed providers of instruction and create materials tailored to students' particular needs.
International conference proceedings, English - Peer Evaluation of Academic Presentations by Japanese Graduate Students: Qualitative evaluation
Shi Jie; John Cross
2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 174-178, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Invited, This study reports an investigation on the qualitative data of Japanese graduate students' evaluation on peers' academic presentation in English which is designed to be part of a collaborative learning project. A total of 772 peer comments was extracted from 265 peer evaluation on 10 group presentations as the dataset of this investigation. Results indicate that students' focuses are on the quality of slides including figures, tables and texts, the understanding of the technical content of the research presented by peers though students come from various laboratories, and peers' delivery abilities such as eye contact, reading from prepared notes and rate/speed of speech. The data also shows that students gave more positive comments than negative ones and that the suggestion type of comment is the least in terms of the quantity.
International conference proceedings, English - Teaching Poster by Using Genre Approach to Science and Technology Students of A Japanese University
Uma Maheswari Rajagopalan; Shi Jie
2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 179-184, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Science and technology students require the specialized skill of making poster and the explicit teaching of which is lacking in the curricula of general Japanese English tertiary education. This paper considers posters as an expanded form of abstracts and reports teaching of posters to 20 third-year students of an undergraduate ESP course at a Japanese university of science and engineering. First, students were taught to write an abstract using genre theory which required teaching of the generic moves of an abstract of a research article (RA). Teaching of the abstract involved the explicit teaching of the basic moves of background, purpose, methods, results and summary that are needed to construct RA abstract. Following that, students deconstructed abstracts taken from authentic research articles selected by both the teacher and the student themselves into moves. Having understood the moves, a democratic choice of several topics from the experiments done as part of the subject curriculum was chosen for constructing abstracts. The abstract drafts were peer evaluated with checklists, followed by teacher's comments based on which the students submitted a final draft. Next, with the final draft, the students expanded the abstract to construct a poster. This task involved writing the contents of each of the moves in the abstract to detailed content expanding each of the sections, Introduction, Methods, Results and Summary. Contents of all the sections except for the Results were prepared in groups of three or four with each member being responsible for each section. Although group members constructed the contents through discussion, poster making and presentation were done individually. Though there were some overlaps in the contents, the current project was found to empower the students with the required poster making and presentation skills which was also shown from the post survey.
International conference proceedings, English - Corpus-based Analysis of Academic RA Genre: The "Results" sub-genre
Sebastien Louvigne; Jie Shi
2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 185-189, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Research Article (RA) is the kind of academic publication that all researchers must produce constantly but not necessarily have learned systematically in their university education. RA consists of multiple parts as typically summarized to be IMRAD (Introduction, Method, Result and Discussion) which is a considered to he one of the academic genres. Each of the multiple parts of the RA genre is comprised of one or more sub-genres, which makes the RA genre complex and challenging, especially for novice EST (English for Science and Technology) researchers. As an effort to decode the RA genre in order to help the novice EST researchers, the researchers of this study analyze the sub-genre of "Results" using corpus-based approach, after they analyzed the Abstract, Introduction and Method sub-genres in previous studies. The purpose of this study is threefold: to determine the linguistic features of the common moves (structure) in the "Results" sub-genre of RA using corpus analysis, to compare the linguistic features of "Results" with those of the whole RA, "Introduction", and "Method".

Symposium, English - Innovation for higher education: Developing and managing an ESP program at a Japanese university of science and engineering
SHI, Jie
As globalization continues its advance around the world, the need for innovation in higher education is greater than ever. The traditional practices, ideologies, and infrastructure of higher education are being challenged by the rapidly evolving global standards. With English being the world's current science lingua franca, Japanese universities of science and engineering are in urgent demand of a more efficient English education that is able to make students functional in English in academic and professional contexts. As the third dimension of an innovative approach to tertiary EFL education that includes EGP (English for General Purposes) and EGAP (English for General Academic Purposes), ESP is spreading rapidly and initializing substantial and structural changes in tertiary EFL English education. However, the development and implementation of innovative and methodologically-sound ESP curricula at Japanese universities will take both time and effort. This paper focuses on an ESP program for undergraduate students majoring in science and engineering at a Japanese university in Tokyo as a case study of innovation in English education at the tertiary level. First, definitions and theories of innovation relating to education and ESP are explained. Then, the development of ESP, ESP as an educational approach, curriculum design, and program management are discussed. Specific aspects of curriculum design, including Needs Analysis, methodology, pedagogy, genres, evaluation, teaching materials, and staffing are examined. The future development of the program, such as the construction of a coherent program that bridges undergraduate and graduate school ESP programs, is also discussed.
Research institution, English - The Assessment of the Vocabulary Size of Japanese University Students of Science and Engineering in an ESP Program
Shinichi Hashimoto; Yu Yan; Shi Jie
2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 110-112, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Linguistic competences are of foremost importance to students in ESP (English for Specific Purposes) programs where they receive training in areas such as vocabulary, sentence structure and rhetoric norms common to science engineering fields in order to function professionally in English in an increasingly international environment. To achieve this goal, students have to be nurtured in field-specific language contexts-an aim which is more focused than General English or English for Academic Purposes approaches. To this end, ESP instructors attempt to find effective methods to analyze student abilities and tailor materials suited to their needs and level of proficiency. This paper describes the first part of a longitudinal project which aims to improve vocabulary development of third-year science engineering students in a Japanese university. In this pilot study, one third of the classes of undergraduate Technical English were given the vocabulary size test developed by Paul Nation and David Beglar (2007) to gauge students' approximate vocabulary size for general English reading. The 30-minute test was administered in class via the university's e-learning system (WebClass UEC) to expedite the compiling of results. This presentation reports the background and rationale for using this particular measurement, the holistic results of the pilot assessment, the analysis of the correlations and deviations between departments, and the implications of these similarities and differences. In addition, these results will be used for deciding on the level from which to develop teaching materials to bridge the gaps that may appear in students' semi-technical and technical lexical repertoire. In future studies, these results will be correlated with TOEIC scores of the same students, as well as the results of other academic and specialized technical word lists.
International conference proceedings, English - A Critical Analysis of the ESP Textbooks for Japanese University Students of Science and Engineering
Yu Yan; Shi Jie
2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 114-117, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The appropriateness of teaching materials for ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses is one of the most crucial aspects of ESP courses. However, ESP courses range from general ESP courses to highly technical ones depending on the needs of students as well as institutions. Some courses are heterogeneous classes with students of different disciplines whereas others are more homogeneous with students of same or similar majors or research areas. Choices of textbooks for the former type of classes could be of more general and diverse but not for the latter type that requires specific teaching materials for the specific majors of study. The development of specific teaching materials for both types of classes is equally challenging in varied aspects. The ESP practitioners without the specific technical knowledge of the disciplines and fields of research of the students naturally resort to using ready-made textbooks in the market, which could satisfy the needs of the mixed classes. Hence, it is of crucial importance that appropriate textbooks are selected. This study reports the results of a systematic overview and evaluation of the bestselling textbooks for EST (English for Science and Technology) courses at tertiary level in Japan. The methods of the overview are based on the following categories: types of syllabuses, pedagogy (exercises, activities, projects, etc.), content areas, medium of instruction, level of proficiency and technicality, supplementary documents such as index, appendices and glossary, and target students.
International conference proceedings, English - Genre-Based Framework to Reach A More Succinct and Objective Decision in Peer Review of A Research Article
Uma Maheswari Rajagopalan; Shi Jie
2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 118-122, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, In research publications, peer review is an essential step in process of research article (RA) evaluation for publication by independent scientists. Reviewers are obligated to conduct the review objectively and provide with appropriate criticisms supported by proper evidence and adequate comments in confidence. The comments serve the purpose of informing journal editors about article content and the significance of the results. However, in the absence of a succinct and objective frameworks of reviewing and adequate training, peer reviewers are inclined to give general and, at times, non-systematic comments on the RAs under evaluation. To address this issue, a holistic framework and a specific checklist based on the RA genre and the authentic guideline of a scientific journal is proposed in this paper. The framework is expected to give a holistic structure for writing peer reviews and to especially benefit novel reviewers. The checklist mainly consists of the following genre-based moves: research purpose and/or rational in the appropriate contexts of the research fields, experimental and theoretical explanations, significance of outcome/results, and other relevant discussions and perspectives.
International conference proceedings, English - A Corpus-based Analysis of the Scientific RA Genre and RA Introduction
Sebastien Louvigne; Jie Shi; Sonia Sharmin
2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 123-127, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The Research Article (RA) is an important and challenging academic genre as it contains multiple parts such as introduction, methodology, results, analysis/discussion of findings, and conclusion. Each part contains one or more sub-genres. Hence, although essential for teaching, learning and applications, genre-based analysis of the RA is generally considered to be very difficult in nature because of its complexity. Without sufficient genre and linguistic knowledge of the RA, English Foreign Language (EFL) students and researchers are not able to employ the correct structure or organization and appropriate linguistic/language expressions for clear communication of their ideas. The purpose of this study is threefold: to determine the linguistic features of the common moves in the "Introduction" section (i.e. a sub-genre of the RA) using corpus analysis, to compare with the linguistic features of the whole RA, and to compare the use of rhetorical moves in the "Introduction" with previous results on "Abstracts" of academic conference RAs. The rationale for focusing on the "Introduction" is that beginner EFL writers generally find it difficult for composition as it contains several stages which may be flexible in order, content and quantity. 543 RAs from the Journal of Optics (from 1997 to 2001, as the first part of a longitudinal study) were analyzed in this research. The main methods utilized were mining for data collection and corpus-based analysis of genre-based linguistic features (e.g. lexicon list, n-gram).
International conference proceedings, English - An Investigation into Problems in the Writing of Conference Abstracts by Japanese Graduate Students
Shi Jie; John Cross
2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 128-132, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Invited, Academic writing is one of the most difficult language competences to acquire for EFL students. In Japan, students in the first and second years of undergraduate non-English majors are likely to receive English language teaching that covers basic and foundational language skills, e.g. paragraph writing and 5-paragraph essays, which are considered to be EGP (English for General Purposes). Thus, most students enter graduate schools without having had exposure to authentic academic writing, including abstracts. This paper reports a case study of an ESP (English for Specific Purposes) course at postgraduate level in a Japanese university of science and engineering, and identifies common problems within the genre of conference abstracts produced by approximately forty M1 (1st year Master's) students of ICT majors. Students were asked to write, in English, two drafts of a conference abstract either individually or in pairs. The second draft was revised based on the feedback on the first draft provided by the teacher using a feedback form. The same form was used for the feedback on the second draft for consistency and to analyze students' improvements as well as areas that still remained difficult for students. Collated data from both drafts and the comparison of the two drafts indicate that the most difficult aspects to improve included grammar errors (e.g. word forms, subject-verb agreements, and plurals), incorrect balance of the moves, and insufficient highlighting of key moves.

2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 0, 0, 400-405, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Invited, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is one of the main approaches of English education for speakers of English as a foreign and second language. It has grown to be a prominent approach for teaching English to students and researchers of science and technology in the recent years. This paper describes educational innovation as a theoretical framework for higher education reforms and ESP. It then introduces ESP as an educational approach with its historical development, the key issues involved in ESP programs and curriculum design. The application of educational innovation theories and ESP is demonstrated with a case study of a Japanese university of science and technology. Practical aspects of the case study such as Needs Analysis, teaching methodology, pedagogy, assessment of students, course evaluation, teaching materials including textbooks and real-life academic sources is discussed. Innovative program management by English and science faculty members is reported.
International conference proceedings, English - A Corporal and LDA Analysis of Abstracts of Academic Conference Papers

2013 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCED MECHATRONIC SYSTEMS (ICAMECHS), IEEE, 0, 0, 412-416, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Invited, The academic Abstract genre is one of the most important parts of a research paper because it is viewed at first by readers. When well written, it enables them to quickly and accurately identify the main ideas and contributions of the work presented. Hence writing an abstract is the most difficult part. Poorly written abstracts can affect negatively the significance and understanding of the paper. In order to investigate the rhetorical moves (or communicative stages) creating the meaning of abstracts, this study analyzes a corpus of 1,500 international conference papers (ICALT) using Corpus Linguistic tools and LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) algorithm. This study shows that abstracts are written focusing on research purpose and methods rather than describing the background and commenting results. LDA algorithm provides a list of topics within the corpus of abstracts based on research areas. Future works on LDA algorithm should strengthen its semantic approach based on the rhetorical moves.

This paper reports the recent changes in the US policies on bilingual education at schools and its implications on mother tongue or second language education of immigrant children with a focus on the Chinese community. It also captures and analyzes the phenomenon of the increasing interest in the programs of Chinese language education at both public and private schools as illustrated in the number of schools that offer Chinese language subjects and the official AP exam of Chinese language and Culture by the College Board. However, the researcher argues that present system of the Chinese language education offered by the 264 schools in the US are far from sufficient for the large population of bilingual Chinese children already in the US and coming to the US as immigrants or residents every year. To fill in the gap, some bilingual parents take positive actions to teach or support their children's mother tongue or L1, i.e. Chinese, at home or in weekend schools. In this paper, a parent-run Chinese language school in the Boston area, Newton Chinese Language School, is reported as a case study. The significance of the school lies in its scale, long history, management, curriculum, parent participation and social contributions. As this research is a longitudinal one, only partial data is reported in this paper including the general information, the brief history, the mission statement and the 2008 curriculum of the school. The data in this paper is mainly qualitative from the interviews with the management and teachers and the homepage of the school.

SHI, Jie
Public discourse, English, HUST Center for Foreign Languages Education and Research Seminar, Invited, The Center of Foreign Languages Education and Research, School of Foreign Languages, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), China, Wuhan, China, The speaker aims to first address the somewhat unsettled understanding of ESP conceptualization in China by introducing the model of ESP by Dudley-Evans and St John (1998) derived from ESL contexts and comparing it with the new model of ESP integrating the notion of domains in EFL contexts conceptualized by the speaker. Then, the speaker explains what the ESP is as an educational approach in nature and how course design and classroom teaching can be altered by this approach. Following that, the speaker offers specific explanations on Action Research and discusses why and how practice of language teaching, such as GE (General English/大学英語) at Chinese tertiary institutions, is pertinent to Action Research. As practicality is the main goal of this talk, the speaker welcomes direct interaction with participants on practical classroom-based issues and research problems in the Q & A session of the talk.

In this paper, we report the teaching of summary writing to third-year undergraduate students in a technical English course at a Japanese university of science and engineering. A total of around 40 students were first divided into two groups and given texts related to science. They wrote two drafts of the summaries. For the first draft, the students belonging to group 1 were taught the stages involved in constructing a summary using genre theory and then asked to summarize while in group 2, students were asked to translate and make a summary based on the translation. For the second draft, the order of tasks given to students as well the texts used were swapped with group 1 doing the translation followed by summarizing and group 2 learning stages and then constructing a summary. Summary drafts 1 and 2 from both the groups are analyzed for the lexicogrammatical features by systemic functional linguistics and to assess based on their lexical density, clause structure, paraphrasing, and usage of tenses. Results of analysis and its implications to the pedagogical approaches followed will be presented at the meeting., Domestic conference

01 Apr. 2019 - 01 Mar. 2023 - Comparative Study of the Early Start of English and Second Language Education in Japan and Korea
SHIGA Mikio; TAKEDA Yuko; SHI Jie; SHOZAWA Jun; LEE Mingyu; TANAKA Ako
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Based on the field works in Korea, China and Taiwan, several research papers were published in the final report. Concerning Korea, a report about 'English Village' which is closely related to the early start of English education and two articles by interview on the actual situation of education of Japanese language are in the final report. Concerning China, an investigator(Lee) introduced in detail the movement of foreign language education in the Korean autonomous region in the north-east China. Concerning Taiwan, a research team(Shozawa as head) made clear how the indigenous language is taken into official education system by the analysis of collected data. All of these are discussion from latest information through field work. They show the complex relation between foreign language and social circumstances in each country or region. In the process of research, some foreign researchers showed interest on our project, and we could get valuable information and discussion from them. Including them, quite a few collaborative researchers contributed to the final report with their papers, which dealt with, for example, the elementary English teacher training in Korea, content analysis of Japanese language textbook in Korea, movement of English education reform in Japan, case study of a bilingual school in Japan and practices of foreign language education in an elementary school in Japan. Besides final report, two papers were published in academic journals. The actual movement of the early start of English should be considered with the properness of each country or region rather than by the reflection of globalism. The problem of the early start of English and second foreign language education in Korea and Japan is how to realize the publicness of language education. The policies and practices concerning language education can be seen as struggles for it., 17530608

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, University of Miyazaki, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Taking advantage of Japanese Association of Multilingualism established by our group, we have conducted and reported a number of researches in Japan and overseas. We have also held an international symposium on Simultaneous Multilingual Language Learning Support as an extension of our research. The following is a summary of our research as a whole: 1. The real state of acquisition of the Japanese language in multilingual (Tagalog, English, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Chinese) environments was made clear from various points of research views such as (1) one person-one language and one environment-ore language hypothesis, (2) dominant language and thought language, (3) transition effects on multilinguals' perception of their language, (4) linguistic recency and language choice, (5) language use in contact situation, (6) multiple identities, (7) locative case marker and (8) tense and aspect. 2. The status quo of simultaneous multilingual language learning and its program in Korea, China and Japan was discussed and summarized in an international symposium we held. Such program can be part of a new Japanese teacher education program., 16320066
