Halobacterium Salinarum is a baterium which thrives in extremely high salt concentrations. In the cell membrane of Halobacterium Salinarum, photo-receptor protein that proceeds photosynthesis exists. This protein is called "bacteriorhodopsin", because it resembles rhodopsin, the visual pigment of animals. Similar to visual pigments, bacteriorhodopsin exhibits high quantum efficiency, i.e. it responds to a single phton in room temperature; it has visual information processing function such as edge detection and motion detection. Our major research area includes: development of optical sensors adapting bacteriorhodopsin; application to quantum optics; and nonlinear spectroscopical analysis of living Halobacterium Salinarum.

JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 80, 12, 6595-6601, Dec. 1996, Peer-reviwed, Probability distributions of the peak output power from planar microcavity dye lasers with pulsed excitation have been studied experimentally. Two microcavities were used, one operating possibly with a single mode and the other possibly with a number of modes. These expectations are based on the relative magnitude of the mode radius and the pump beam radius. In the former cavity an exponential-like distribution was observed below threshold, which indicates single-mode operation. In the latter cavity a single-peaked distribution appeared even below threshold indicating multiple-mode operation. These results are, respectively, in qualitative agreement with theoretical distributions for steady state. That the observed pulse width is large enough to apply steady state distribution equation is shown by calculating the characteristic transient time for the intensity distribution. FULLERENES AND PHOTONICS III, SPIE - INT SOC OPTICAL ENGINEERING, 2854, 52-62, 1996, Peer-reviwed, Second and third order nonlinear optical properties of C-60 based composites and multilayered structures with TPP and TPN are studied by transverse optical second and third harmonic generation, respectively. The results are compared with those obtained from pristine, photolyzed in vacuum and in oxygen atmosphere C-60 thin films. Second harmonic generation is observed from structures containing C-60 molecules. An enhancement of the quadratic susceptibility is observed from the multilayered structures. The third harmonic generation experiments show an enhancement of the cubic susceptibility from photolyzed C-60 thin films. No increase of chi((3)) in the multilayered structures or composites is observed. A slightly larger response is obtained with the multilayered thin films as compared to the composite material.

The printing conditions (bR concentration, discharge frequency and droplet spacing) on transparent electrodes were optimised to fabricate a 7-valued 5-lobe cos-on-centre Gabor filter and a 4-lobe sin-on-centre Gabor filter that mimics the spatial structure of the response range 'receptive field' of simple cells in the primary visual cortex. The spatio-temporal frequency response showed a bandpass with a spatial frequency of 0.10 mm-1 and a temporal frequency peak of 4 Hz for both filters. Edge detection, direction detection and optical illusion detection were performed using this device. The human eye's edge detection and orientation detection functions were successfully reproduced using only the properties of the biomembrane, without the use of software, complex circuitry or a power supply., 18H03258

Irradiation of bacteriorhodopsin on the interface of electrodes and the electrolyte generates a time-differential photocurrent, which results in a signal that responds only to changes in the intensity of light without the need for an external power supply. By using two types of bR with different optical response characteristics, the optical flow detection known as a visual information function of an insect is attained. The light sources at 7 eV and 8 eV with these devices were supplied respectively to ultra high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of superconductive materials and to angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measuring electronic states at 2-dimensional Brillouin zone. High-efficiency, large scale transmission gratings were developed and the wavefront distortion of the diffracted beam due to the bending of the grating were analyzed. A femtosecnd multi-color laser was developed by using these gratings for harmonic generation, resulting in the output powers of 0.5 TW at the fundamental (800nm) and 0.1 TW at the second harmonic respectively at a repetition rate of 1 kHz.. The photocell consists of a bR dip-coated thin film and electrolyte sandwiched between glass plates with ITO electrodes. We fabricated a simple direction sensor by patterning the bR films on electrodes. When light scans the sensing area, the edges of each pattern produce a positive or negative current depending on the light's speed and direction. These direction sensors also respond strongly to rapidly moving objects, though not at all to slow ones. Eventually we replaced ITO/glass with conductive polymer/plastic based on PEDET:PSS. The flexible sensor showed almost the same response as ITO/glass sensor, but couldn't sufficiently respond. The photonic crystal slab was fabricated on a quartz substrate by means of the electron-beam lithography and reactive ion etching technique. We fabricated ten gratings with grating pitch L are from 600 to 720 nm. The transmitted intensity of light through the sample was measured at room temperature, as a function of the photon energy. In a thin waveguide, only the zero order TE and TM light mode can propagate. One of the typical results of the coupling to the waveguide modes is the appearance of sharp dips in the transmission spectrum. We altered the incident angle from-40 to 40 degrees. The polarization of the incident light is parallel to the grating line. We have observed the sharp transmission dips excited by waveguide modes and the photoinduced transmission change caused by refractive index change of bR. Quality (Q) factor of this resonator is estimated to be about 10^3 from the typical dip width (FWHM) 0.95 nm. Since the waveguide modes have a significant evanescent component, coupling to or from an external wave is strongly influenced by the refractive index of the material above the grating area. Thus, a change of refractive index of bR modulate the transmission spectra. In our measurements, the maximum shift of transmission dip was approximately 2.0 nm. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using a protein as a programmable active material in integrated optical devices. We have proposed that the shift of dips can be applied for light controlled optical switching. Hence, the fabrication of nanoscale structured optical device such as photonic crystal slab coated with bR polymer is a primary technological task. Most known member of that family is rhodopsin, protein responsible for the light detection in human eye. We proposed a color photosensor made of bR and its variants. We simulated basic nonlinear optical proerties. (refrectivity and absorption) of wild type bacteriorhodopsin for green or red sensitive cone visual pigment. A variant of wild type bR is prepared by reconstituting bleached bR with 4-keto retinal as green sensitive cone. Absorption maxima for bR-4-keto is 515 nm, but the shape of spectrum is not sharp. Wt-bR can be changed to a blue species by acid (HC1) washing. Absorption spectra of blue membrane by our treatments shifted blue(λィイD2maxィエD2 = 600 nm). Tomioka isolated a phoborhodopsin which absorption maxima is 410 nm (or 490 nm). From the above results, we proposed artificial retina which have blue membrane, wt-bR and phoborhodopsin in place of red, green and blue sensitive cone visual pigments, respectivery., 10650004
1998 - 1999 - 平板形マイクロキャビティレ-ザ-における強度揺らぎに関する研究

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 重点領域研究, マイクロキャビティレーザーにおける二次のコヒーレンスすなわち強度相関の程度を知ることを本年度の目的とした。平板形マイクロキャビティレーザーにおいては、その有効モード半径よりポング光ビーム半径が小さければ単一モード動作が起き、出力揺らぎは閾値以下ではボース・アインシュタイン分布、閾値以上ではポアソン分布となると予想される。他方有効モード半径よりポンプ光ビーム半径が大きければ複数モード動作が起き、出力揺らぎは常にガウス的であると予想される。昨年度は一定入力に対して100ショットで揺らぎを調べたが、本年はディジタルオシロスコープを活用して1000ショットで揺らぎを調べ、より詳細なデータを得た。使用発光媒体は色素ローダミン6G、励起光源はパルス幅0,9nsの窒素レーザー励起色素レーザーを用いた。色素濃度5×10^<-3>mol/1の場合は、単一モードの場合はほぼ予想どうりであったが、複数モードでは閾値以下で出力零の頻度が予想以上に多く、頻度分布が双峰性となることが観測された。これは何らかの原因で双安定性が生じているものと考えられ、更に検討する必要がある。色素濃度5×10^<-4>mol/1としたときは、単一モードにおいても複数モードにおいても定性的に予想と合致する結果が得られた。なお、色素濃度が5×10^<-4>mol/1のときは5×10^<-3>mol/1のときに比較して閾値が上昇したが、同時に閾におけるlog-logプロットのジャンプは減少した。これは、通常の4準位マイクロキャビティレーザーの予想とは逆の傾向である。通常の理論にはモル濃度の影響は取り入れられてはおらず、閾値の上昇に伴ってジャンプは増大するとされる。この矛盾を解決するため、有限の原・分子濃度を考慮した速度方程式を導入し、実験結果を説明し得ることを示した。, 09210207

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 重点領域研究, マイクロキャビティレーザーの出力スペクトルが、発振閾値以上でシャウロウ・タウンズ則に従わず、広いスペクトル幅を維持することを見いだした。したがって、マイクロキャビティレーザーの一次コヒーレンスは不良であるが、二次のコヒーレンスすなわち強度相関の程度を知ることを次の課題と定めた。平板形マイクロキャビティレーザーにおいては、その有効モード半径よりポンプ光ビーム半径が小さければ単一モード動作が、大きければ複数モード動作が起こると予想される。レーザーの強度揺らぎに対する標準的なフォッカー・プランク方程式が適用できるものと仮定すると、単一モードの閾以下ではボース・アインシュタイン的強度分布、閾以上ではポアソン的分布、複数モードでは閾の上下にかかわらずガウス的分布が得られる筈である。Q値の差により有効モード半径の異なる二つの平板形マイクロキャビティを用い、また励起光ビームの半径を様々に変えることにより、単一モード実験的に動作、複数モード動作の予想される状況を設定し、上記の出力強度分布が得られることを確認した。実験には発光媒体としてローダミン6Gを用い、励起光源にはパルス幅0.9nsの窒素レーザー励起色素レーザーを用いた。入出力特性上の各点において、一定入力で100〜200ショットの出力を測定し、出力の頻度分布を得た。標準的なフォッカー・プランク方程式による予測と半定量的な一致を見た。閾の定義がマイクロキャビティレーザーでは問題になっているが、閾近傍の頻度分布においては予測と異なる点が見られた。なお出力揺らぎの規格化分散は一般にモード数および平均出力とともに減少する傾向が見られた。, 08224208

We proposed a new photonic switching device with erasable focusing lens, Zone Plate, using bR.The arrangement employed to obtain the Zone Plate is Mach-Zehnder interferometer using 515 nm line of Ar-ion laser. In one of the write beams, a spherical lens is inserted. At the exit of the interferometer and at a determined distance, the bR film is placed on which the circular Zone Plate is recorded by means of the coherent superposition of thr plane and spherical wavefronts. Probe beams that have different wavelength travel with one of the write beams and irradiates the Zone Plate, which forms images of light source points respectively. 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 重点領域研究, バクテリオロドプシンはバクテリアの細胞膜から単離される色素タンパク質で、フォトクロミズムと強い非線形光学特性をもつため、実時間ホログラム記録材料として注目されている。本研究は、生体膜バクテリオロドプシン(bR)のフォトクロミズム利用して回折レンズ機能をもつホログラムを書き込み、各波長ごとに信号ののせられたマルチカラー入力光を波長ごとに分割する波長分割型ビームスプリッターを提案し、さらに以下のような計算機シミュレーションおよび実験的検討を行った。 1.Arイオンレーザを用いた2光束干渉法で、一方に凸レンズを挿入すると平面波と球面波が干渉して、bR薄膜上に同心円状のゾーンプレートのホログラムが記録される。これは回折型平板レンズとして機能するので読みだし光(信号光)を集光する。今年度は光学系にマッハツェンダー型を採用して記録光の入射角度を小さく、すなわちインラインホロクラムに近づけることによって、良好なスポット形状やスポットサイズが得られ、回折効率が向上した。 2.ゾーンプレートの回折機能によって、波長の異なる入力光は波長ごとに別の場所に集光する。光学系をマッハツェンダー型に移行し、さらに発散光を収束光にして、読み出し光を従来と反対方向から入力できるようにしたため、入力光の入射角度をブラッグ角に合わせる必要がなくなった。入力進号を簡単な方法で波長分割し、一素子で集光、波長分波機能をもつ素子を実現した。 3.さらにビーム伝搬法を用いて、レンズ焦点距離、入射角度などの各パラメータを変化させ、計算機シミュレーションによって記録再生の最適条件を検討した。, 07246218

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for General Scientific Research (C), A new quasi-phase-matching scheme for optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) utilizing periodic modulation of optical nonlinearity and refractive index at a period of one wavelength of the harmonic wave has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. It has been analyzed that several new types of phase matching, i.e., (1) the phase matching utilizing the bended omega-k dispersion near the stop band, (2) the quasi-phase-matching due to amplitude modulation of the fundamental wave and (3) the standing wave quasi-phase-matching are accomplished in the new modulated structure. The coexistence of the different types of phase matching is unique to the new scheme and leads to a high conversion efficiency. An extremely tiny SHG device with high efficiencies can be realized by inserting the new periodic structure in high Q cavities ; an analysis shows that, when an infrared diode laser is used as fundamental light source, harmonic outputs on the order of mW are obtained from a-10mum thick GaP/AlP stack forming a periodic modulation of optical constants between high reflectivity (-99%) end mirrors. The phase matched SHG in the new periodic structure has been confirmed experimentally. The sample used was an MBE-grown GaAs/AlAs stack and infrared radiation from a YAG laser was used as fundamental wave. Harmonic power emanating from the sample was measured as a function of the layr thickness taking advantage of the thickness nonuniformity in the sample. 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), 光による光の制御は高速化の可能性や多重並列処理の容易さから、光通信や光情報処理への適用が注目され、フォトニックスイッチ素子への要求が高まっている。本研究は生体膜バクテリオロドプシン(bR)のフォトクロミズム利用して回折型平板レンズのホログラムを書き込み、集光機能をもった光制御型スイッチ素子として提案、試作した。その結果以下の知見を得た。 1.Arイオンレーザを用いた2光束干渉法で、一方に凸レンズを挿入すると平面波と球面波が干渉して、bR薄膜上に同心円状のゾーンプレートのホログラムが記録される。これは回折型平板レンズとして機能するので読みだし光(信号光)を集光する。He-Neレーザを用いて集光機能を確認し、スポット形状、スポットサイズ、回折効率から最適記録条件を見いだした。 2.ゾーンプレートは実時間で書き込まれるので、on/offまたは、バクテリオロドプシンの偏光認識性を利用した偏光変化で書き込み光を制御できる。これによって信号光のスイッチング動作が確認できた。 ゾーンプレートの回折機能によって、波長の異なる入力光は波長ごとに別の場所に集光する。30μm薄膜の薄い試料を用いて、読みだし光の入射角度がブラッグ角度から±3°の許容範囲をもつことを確認した。これを利用すれば、入力進号が波長分割でき、一素子で集光、波長分割機能をもつスイッチ素子実現の可能性が高いことが分かった, 06750047
1994 - 1994 - 微小共振器レーザーにおける単一モード動作の実現と自然放出結合率の決定

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 重点領域研究, 本研究は、色素Rh6Gを媒質としてパルス平板形微小共振器レーザにおいて、モード半径を励起ビーム径より大きくして単一モード動作を実現し、微小共振器レーザのキーパラメータである自然放出結合率を決定することを目的とした。これまでの反射鏡より一桁高反射率の反射鏡を用いて単一モード動作の実現を試みた結果、以下の知見が得られた。 1.自然放出スペクトル線幅、発振線幅は、ともに現有の分光器の分解能以下に狭まっていると認められた。また出射光の広がり角およびモード半径は、しきい値以下では定性的に理論値と一致したが、しきい値以上では一致しなかった。しかし近視野像の撮影から直接求められたしきい値以上でのモード半径は101μmで増大が確認できた。 2.入出力特性において、入力光強度が非常に小さい場合、出力光の強度に大きなゆらぎが観測された。入力光強度に対する出力パルス振幅のピーク値の頻度を測定したところ、自然放出領域で入力光強度が小さい場合には、ガウス的分布を示し、しきい値以上の領域での波形はポアッソン分布に従う。これは単一モードで発振しているレーザ光の光電子計数分布と定性的に同じ振る舞いであり、単一モード発振の根拠となる。これまで用いてきた93%の反射鏡による共振器では多数のモードが同時に動作しているため、このようなゆらぎが見られなかったと考えられる。本年は自然放出結合率など各パラメータの導出には至らなかったが、99.5%の高反射率鏡を用いた共振器での単一モード動作の実現を確認できた。, 06245210
1994 - 1994 - バクテリオロドプシンを用いた光論理回路

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 奨励研究(A), バクテリオロドプシン(以下bRと略)は、分子サイズ単位で可視光に反応して脱色し、もとへもどるサイクルを安定に繰り返すという優れた性質をもつ光受容タンパク質である。このフォトクロミズムを利用して縮退4光波混合による位相共役波の発生を行い、偏光情報を記録できる、すなわち入力光の偏光によって出力光の偏光を制御できることを確認してきた。本研究では全ての情報を光信号にのせて処理する光-光制御技術(フォトニクス)の一端として、生体素子bRの最もユニークな特徴である偏光の認識性を応用し、偏光状態を情報のキャリア(例えば、縦偏光をtrue,横偏光をfalse)とする入出力すべて光を用いた純光学的な論理回路の設計と動作確認を行い、入出力すべて光を用いた論理回路を実現した。 Ar^+レーザを用いた4光波混合実験において、1/2波長板を用いて書き込み光と読みだし光の偏光を180°変化させ、縦偏光をtrue(or 1)、横偏光をfalse(or 0)とし、発生する位相共役波の偏光(縦あるいは横)を演算結果とする光論理回路の設計を行った。まず偏光特性をそのまま利用してexclusive or回路を構築し、さらに1/2波長板、偏光ビームスプリッター等偏光素子を用いてand,or回路を設計、構成した。 入力光がビームの場合には数点の偏光素子を用いるだけでand,or回路の構築が出来、ともに高速応答を示した。さらに入力光の画像への拡張を試みたが、直交する偏光を含む画像サンプルの作製が困難であったため画像の論理演算実現には至らなかった。しかしプローブ光を直交する偏光をもつ2画像とし、これを同時に2重書き込みしたところ偏光子1点で2画像の和・差演算に成功し、bRを用いた生体素子が画像情報処理に有用であることを確認した。, 05750037

1992 - 1992 - 超短共振器レ-ザ-における自然放出制御および超低閾値化に関する研究

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 電気通信大学, 一般研究(C), 1.理論 (1)ファブリィ・ペロー型超短共振器における自然放出率の理論を、二準位原子に対するものから、現在使用している色素等に適合するものに改良した。すなわち、発光原・分子が自由空間で持つ、均一および不均一広がりを熱浴で記述し、自然放出の過程をマスター方程式を用いて解いた。その結果大きい広がりのある場合はほぼそれに反比例する放出率の減少が見られた。 (2)速度方程式近似の下で、定常発振時の誘導放出光と自然放出光との比を求め、これから励起入力に対する出力光の偏光度を推定したところ入力出特性よりも急峻な閾特性が得られた。これは閾値を実験的に定めるために利用できる。 (3)ファブリィ・ペロー型超短共振器における自然放出の放射パターンの計算を非対称共振器の場合へ拡張した。低反射率側に強いローブが得られた。 2・実験 (1)共振器長1λ程度の超短共振器にローダミン6Gのアルコール溶液を注入し、510nm、パルス幅0.6nsの励起光パルスを照射し、出力光が自然放出領域から発振領域へ緩やかに移行することを観察した。推定される自然放出の共振器への結合率は0.01程度である。 (2)同上の系において、励起パルス光を直線偏光としたとき、入力を増加させると出力の偏光度が0から1へと急峻に上昇することを観測した。 (3)新たな試験レーザー材料としてEuキレートを3種類作成し、511nmにピークのある螢光を確認した。, 04650009

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 理化学研究所, 一般研究(B), これまでにバクテリオロドプシン分散薄膜を用いた位相共役光学においてポンプ光とプローブ光の偏光が互いに直交している場合にも位相共役波を発生することを見出し、その偏光特性について実験、理論の両面から検討してきた。偏光を含めた位相共役波の発生には、偏光ホログラフィーと同様に2光束の合成電場の周期的変化を記録するための光誘導異方性(二色性、複屈性)が必要である。バクテリオロドプシンの強い光誘導異方性はレチナール分子の長軸に平行な光を最も強く吸収し、垂直な光を吸収しないことに由来する。本年度はバクテリオロドプシンの偏光記録再生機構を調べるために、光誘導異方性を検討した。 異方性の測定には偏光解析法を用いた。励起光を鉛直偏光とし、モニター光は励起光に対して45°傾いた直線偏光とする。モニター光は試料中に生じた異方性によって楕円偏光となるので、その偏光状態を解析する。その結果二色性、複屈折ともに励起光の強度および波長に依存することがわかった。しかし、直交する2光束によって作られる格子は吸収型か、屈折率型かの判定にはさらに検討が必要である。また二色性の励起光強度依存性については、光化学反応サイクルを簡単化した2準位間遷移モデルによって定量的に説明できることを示した。 一方バクテリオロドプシンの偏光認識性を利用すれば、異なる偏光状態の画像を記録再生する偏光多重記録や、それらの画像の和差演算が可能である。また偏光を情報のキャリアとして用いる全光学的論理回路の構築など新しいデバイスとしての応用を検討中である。 また、他の有機非線形デバイスの候補として、2色性色素をドープしたネマティック液晶の複屈折性の光応答変調特性も併せて調べた。, 03452090
