IEEE Transactions on Computers, 67, 9, 1287-1300, Sep. 2018, Peer-reviwed, Mobile devices have several restrictions due to design choices that guarantee their mobility. A way of surpassing such limitations is to utilize cloud servers called cloudlets on the edge of the network through Mobile Edge Computing. However, as the number of clients and devices grows, the service must also increase its scalability in order to guarantee a latency limit and quality threshold. This can be achieved by deploying and activating more cloudlets, but this solution is expensive due to the cost of the physical servers. The best choice is to optimize the resources of the cloudlets through an intelligent choice of configuration that lowers delay and raises scalability. Thus, in this paper we propose an algorithm that utilizes Virtual Machine Migration and Transmission Power Control, together with a mathematical model of delay in Mobile Edge Computing and a heuristic algorithm called Particle Swarm Optimization, to balance the workload between cloudlets and consequently maximize cost-effectiveness. Our proposal is the first to consider simultaneously communication, computation, and migration in our assumed scale and, due to that, manages to outperform other conventional methods in terms of number of serviced users.

IEEE International Conference on Communications, IEEE, 1-6, May 2018, Peer-reviwed, This paper addresses the real-time control of transmission power for small cell base stations (SBSs) exploiting energy-harvesting sources. We employ model predictive control and optimize an objective function that contains the number of users with a given quality of experience and the average state of charge. We first determine the number of active SBSs in the viewpoint of energy efficiency and then approximate the objective function. Finally, we illustrate the proposed method through a numerical example, comparing it with a static method based on statistical information.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 66, 10, 9410-9420, Oct. 2017, Peer-reviwed, The concept of energy harvesting small cell networks (EH-SCNs) has attracted a great deal of attention due to their potential to meet the exponential growth of mobile data traffic with low capital expenditure and operating expenditure. In addition, they are expected to work as a postdisaster wireless access network since exploiting green energy sources to power small cell base stations can overcome the power disruption caused by disasters. However, since the amount of harvested power is not enough for the stable network operation, the networks need to equipped with energy-efficient networking techniques. Additionally, in order to share the accurate postdisaster information, the networks should satisfy a certain quality of experience (QoE) of users in disaster areas. To deal with these challenges, we propose a user location maneuvering method, which advisory controls user's movement to improve the service time of EH-SCNs while guaranteeing a certain QoE level. We also propose an algorithm based on particle swarm optimization, which is configured with appropriate settings to find the best location of users efficiently. Extensive computer simulations show that the proposed maneuvering method can improve the QoE guaranteed service ratio, compared with the existing network operation approaches.

IEEE NETWORK, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 31, 4, 120-128, Jul. 2017, Peer-reviwed, After large-scale natural disasters, such as the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, the demand for communication increases and continuously changes due to fluctuating environmental factors and demand from people, seeking to confirm the safety of others and intending to organize forces to react to the disaster situation. However, it is likely that reaching the communication service is difficult because the communication infrastructure may be damaged or out of use. To provide information communication technology (ICT) services in such circumstances, we propose an ICT system with intelligence, which can adapt to continuously changing conditions in disaster situations. This system is realized by the implementation of the cyber physical system (CPS) to networks, and we explain its capabilities to provide ICT services in disaster situations. Moreover, we explain the field experiment in which we constructed a CPS-equipped network in the Philippines. The successful results demonstrate the effectiveness and the feasibility of disaster-resilient CPS.
Scientific journal, English - Hybrid Method for Minimizing Service Delay in Edge Cloud Computing Through VM Migration and Transmission Power Control
Tiago Gama Rodrigues; Katsuya Suto; Hiroki Nishiyama; Nei Kato
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON COMPUTERS, IEEE COMPUTER SOC, 66, 5, 810-819, May 2017, Peer-reviwed, Due to physical limitations, mobile devices are restricted in memory, battery, processing, among other characteristics. This results in many applications that cannot be run in such devices. This problem is fixed by Edge Cloud Computing, where the users offload tasks they cannot run to cloudlet servers in the edge of the network. The main requirement of such a system is having a low Service Delay, which would correspond to a high Quality of Service. This paper presents a method for minimizing Service Delay in a scenario with two cloudlet servers. The method has a dual focus on computation and communication elements, controlling Processing Delay through virtual machine migration and improving Transmission Delay with Transmission Power Control. The foundation of the proposal is a mathematical model of the scenario, whose analysis is used on a comparison between the proposed approach and two other conventional methods; these methods have single focus and only make an effort to improve either Transmission Delay or Processing Delay, but not both. As expected, the proposal presents the lowest Service Delay in all study cases, corroborating our conclusion that a dual focus approach is the best way to tackle the Service Delay problem in Edge Cloud Computing.

2016 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC), IEEE, 56-61, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Wireless communication devices have spread widely in our society. However, they usually depend heavily on communication infrastructure, leaving them vulnerable to disasters or congestion of base stations. In these situations, a method to send out data without the support of infrastructure is required. Data transmission by D2D communication is a reliable method that does not rely on infrastructure. In this paper, we aim to improve the data dissemination using D2D transmission by applying the concept of assigning "modes" to devices according to their own mobility. In our study, we assume a multi-channel environment, where devices will be allocated different amounts of frequency channels according to their modes. We propose a mode selection function that uses velocity information of the devices to assign modes. By using this function, it is possible to allocate more frequency channels to devices of high mobility, so that they can transmit their data to more devices as they move through a wide area. By mathematical analysis, we evaluate the fairness of disseminated data density among devices of various velocities and the obtained results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method for improving the efficiency of data dissemination.

2016 IEEE 84TH VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (VTC FALL), IEEE, 1-5, 2016, Peer-reviwed, There are many applications which cannot be executed by mobile devices due to their limitations in memory, processing, battery, among others. One solution to this would be offloading heavy tasks to cloud servers in the edge of the network, in a service model called Edge Cloud Computing. The main Quality of Service requirement of this model is a low Service Delay, which can be achieved by lowering Transmission Delay and Processing Delay. Works in literature focus on either one of those two types of delay. This paper, however, argues that an approach which combines transmission and processing technologies to lower Service Delay would be more efficient. This idea is defended by an analysis of the service model and existing stochastic modeling of the Edge Cloud Computing system. We conclude that a dual focus approach would be the only way of truly minimizing the Service Delay, therefore being the desired method to improve Quality of Service. We conclude by laying the foundation for a future model that follows such concept.

2016 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM), IEEE, 1-6, 2016, Peer-reviwed, A concept of Cloud Radio Access Networks (CRANs) with Power over Fiber (PoF) is expected to work as a post-disaster access network architecture. In this architecture, since external power is supplied to Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) through the optical-fiber cable for data communication, RRHs can operate even when power cables are disrupted due to disasters. This network, however, needs to reduce the power consumption for RRH operation and consider Quality of Experience (QoE) to provide sustainable service with enough user satisfaction. To this end, we propose user position guidance approaches which give advices of the best position to users. Our proposed approaches are able to achieve high sustainability while satisfying the QoE constraint. Furthermore, the effectiveness of our proposed approaches is evaluated by numerical calculation.

IEEE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 22, 4, 58-64, Aug. 2015, Peer-reviwed, While the concept of Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RANs) presents a promising solution to provide required quality of service (QoS) for the future network environment, i.e., more than 10 Gbps capacity, less than 1 ms latency, and connectivity for numerous devices, it is still susceptible to quality of experience (QoE) problems. Until now, only a few researchers considered the design and operation of C-RANs based on QoE. In this article we describe our envisioned C-RAN based on passive optical networks (PONs) exploiting power over fiber (PoF), which can be installed with low installation cost and is capable of providing communication services without external power supply for remote radio head (RRH), and describe QoE requirement on the envisioned network. For all users in the envisioned network to satisfy their QoE, effective network design and operation approaches are then presented. Our proposed design and operation approaches demonstrate how to construct the envisioned network, i.e. the numbers of RRHs and optical line terminals (OLTs), and sleep scheduling of RRHs for an energy-efficient optical power transmission.

2015 IEEE 81ST VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (VTC SPRING), IEEE, 1-5, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Wireless Data Center Network (Wi-DCN) is considered one of the most promising future data center architectures due to its low installation and management cost and high flexibility of network design. However, the existing Wi-DCN is, still, not capable of providing an efficient big data mining service such as MapReduce because its topology (i.e., Cayley graph with same degree) cannot achieve enough connectivity on the breakdown of servers and spectrum efficiency, which are important factors to improve the performance of big data mining. Therefore, in order to modify the existing Wi-DCN for big data mining, this paper proposes a spherical rack architecture based on a bimodal degree distribution that improves both failure tolerance and spectrum efficiency. Extensive computer simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed rack architecture in terms of data transmission time required for MapReduce under a failure-prone environment.
International conference proceedings, English - An Energy-Efficient and Delay-Aware Wireless Computing System for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks
Katsuya Suto; Hiroki Nishiyama; Nei Kato; Chih-Wei Huang
IEEE ACCESS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 3, 1026-1035, 2015, Peer-reviwed, Industrial wireless sensor networks have attracted much attention as a cornerstone to making the smart factories real. Utilizing industrial wireless sensor networks as a base for smart factories makes it possible to optimize the production line without human resources, since it provides industrial Internet of Things service, where various types of data are collected from sensors and mined to control the machines based on the analysis result. On the other hand, a fog computing node, which executes such real-time feedback control, should be capable of real-time data collection, management, and processing. To achieve these requirements, in this paper, we introduce wireless computing system (WCS) as a fog computing node. Since there are a lot of servers and each server has 60 GHz antennas to connect to other servers and sensors, WCS has high collecting and processing capabilities. However, in order to fulfilll a demand for real-time feedback control, WCS needs to satisfy an acceptable delay for data collection. In addition, lower power consumption is required in order to reduce the cost for the factory operation. Therefore, we propose an energy-effilcient and delay-aware WCS. Since there is a tradeoff relationship between the power consumption and the delay for data collection, our proposed system controls the sleep schedule and the number of links to minimize the power consumption while satisfying an acceptable delay constraint. Furthermore, the effectiveness of our proposed system is evaluated through extensive computer simulations.

2015 IEEE/CIC INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS IN CHINA (ICCC), IEEE, 1-5, 2015, Peer-reviwed, As the number of mobile users and the variety of contents increase, future access networks need to improve their capacity and latency. The concept of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), which densely deploys a large number of Remote Radio Heads (RRHs), presents a solution to guarantee such communication quality. However, the network still suffers cost issues related to power line supply to a large number of RRHs. Therefore, in this paper, we describe our envisioned C-RAN based on Passive Optical Network (PON) exploiting Power over Fiber (PoF), which is able to provide communication services without external power supply for RRHs. We also describe the conventional network design and operation schemes. Then, power-effective network design and operation approaches to equalize the transmission power of all Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) in the assumed network are presented. Our proposed power-effective network design demonstrates how to deploy the RRHs. Also, based on the proposed design approach, we present a joint control algorithm of the sleep schedule of RRHs and the transmission power of OLTs by considering the distribution of users. Furthermore, the effectiveness of our proposed approach is evaluated through numerical calculation.

IEEE NETWORK, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 28, 4, 40-45, Jul. 2014, Peer-reviwed, Recently, much research attention is being paid toward the wide-area parallel processing architectures whereby all the network devices in the entire network execute the processing function in order to shorten the completion time of big data mining tasks. Despite some advancement, such architectures still suffer from physical network failures, which lead to critical service unavailability. As a remedy to this problem, an overlay-based parallel processing architecture, where nodes manage each other by employing the overlay network, can achieve higher service availability against small-scale failures. However, the overlay-based parallel processing architecture is not capable of providing data mining services in case large-scale network failures disrupt the overlay network. To deal with this issue, our article introduces a design methodology of an overlay-based parallel processing architecture based on integration of overlay and physical networks. Additionally, we introduce basic principles based on the design methodology. Through numerical calculation, we evaluate the effectiveness of an integration approach on the performance of parallel data processing in terms of higher service availability against physical network failures while minimizing traffic load.

2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTING, NETWORKING AND COMMUNICATIONS (ICNC), IEEE, 68-72, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Cloud storage exploiting overlay networks is considered to be a scalable and autonomous architecture. While this technology can ensure the security of storage service, it requires addressing the "server breakdown" problem, which may arise due to malicious attacks on servers and mechanical troubles of servers. In existing literature, an overlay network based on bimodal degree distribution was proposed to achieve high connectivity to combat these two types of server breakdown. However, it cannot ensure the high connectivity against physical network disruption that removes numerous nodes from overlay network. To deal with this issue, in this paper, we propose a physical network aware overlay network, in which the neighboring nodes are connected with one another in the overlay. Moreover, the numerical analysis indicates that the proposed system considerably outperforms the conventional system in terms of service availability.
International conference proceedings, English - Context-aware Task Allocation for Fast Parallel Big Data Processing in Optical-Wireless Networks
Katsuya Suto; Hiroki Nishiyama; Nei Kato
2014 INTERNATIONAL WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND MOBILE COMPUTING CONFERENCE (IWCMC), IEEE, 423-428, 2014, Peer-reviwed, MapReduce architecture has been considered as one of the most promising candidates for efficient and reliable big data mining. While current MapReduce is basically designed for data center and enterprise networks, in which a number of servers are interconnected with optical fiber cables, prospective MapReduce would be applied in optical-wireless environment such as optical-wireless data center network, fiber-wireless (FiWi) access network, and so forth. To modify MapReduce for optical-wireless hybrid network, we need to answer the fundamental research problem, "How does MapReduce architecture use optical and wireless resources for task allocation?" To answer this question, this paper reveals some challenging issues and proposes a context-aware task allocation scheme that is designed by considering characteristics of both optical and wireless communications. Our proposed task allocation scheme can minimize the completion time of big data processing. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method compared with existing task allocation schemes.

IEEE JOURNAL ON SELECTED AREAS IN COMMUNICATIONS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 31, 9, 247-256, Sep. 2013, Peer-reviwed, Hierarchical unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks for file sharing systems such as Gnutella and Kazaa have made a tremendous achievement in the last decade. However, while these P2P networks can be tolerant to churn, i.e., the dynamics of peer participation and departure (or fault), there still remains the issue of vulnerability to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, i.e., when the highest degree peers are removed. In order to overcome this shortcoming, we focus on a bimodal degree distribution, which is tolerant to both churn and DoS attacks. However, the network topology affects the network stability that was not taken into considered in the previous works. Therefore, we analyze the optimal network topology for DoS attack tolerance, and accordingly develop the peer joining procedure to construct and maintain the proposed network topology. Our proposed scheme is dubbed THUP (churn/DoS Tolerant, Hierarchical, Unstructured, P2P network). 2013 IEEE 77TH VEHICULAR TECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE (VTC SPRING), IEEE, 1-5, 2013, Peer-reviwed, We study a novel distributed storage system integrated Data Centers (DCs) and satellite networks. This integrated system is expected as distributed storage system that can keep the storage service even if disasters strike because satellite is tolerant to link disruption caused by disasters. In this paper, we focus on data distribution method in the integrated system, and assume an erasure coding and a simple replication as data distribution method. We evaluate the storage volume and transmission time on each method which are required to restore lost data when some DCs are damaged by disasters. The storage volume of the erasure coding becomes lower than that of the replication while the transmission time becomes higher. A data transfer method is proposed in this paper to shorten the transmission time of the erasure coding. The proposed method can reduce the transmission volume on downlink communication by using network coding technologies. The numerical results show that the proposed method can restore the lost data in less time.

High-speed communication becomes possible among distant locations by the rapid growth of broad-band networks. A cloud storage service, which stores date in Data Centers (DCs) and provides Storage as a Service (SaaS), becomes the medium of choice in recent years. On the other hand, satellite networks have attracted much attention as a type of network that is tolerant to link disruptions caused by disaster. In order to realize a cloud storage that is tolerant to disasters, we study a novel distributed storage system integrated satellite networks. This integrated system achieves high confidentiality and robustness to distribute data by using an erasure coding. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the erasure coding on the communication performance of the integrated storage system. Additionally, we propose a method to reduce the transmission time for the restoration of lost data in the integrated storage system with erasure coding and also verify the efficacy of the proposed method., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 17 Oct. 2012, Technical report of IEICE. In P2P (peer-to-peer) networks, where nodes can freely participate in the network and depart from the network, it is necessary to realize a network robust to node departure. Hierarchical P2P networks such as Gnutella and Kazaa employ a two-tire structure by classifying nodes into higher-layer and lower-layer ones, and they can be tolerant to node from lower-layer departures because higher-layer nodes improve network connectivity. However, they are vulnerable to attacks targeting higher-layer nodes because the removal of high degree nodes dramatically degrade the network connectivity rather than the departure of low degree nodes. To cope with this issue, a bimodal degree distribution, which is tolerant to both attacks and node departures, have been studied. However, a network topology configuration following the bimodal degree distribution is not taken into account in the previous works. Therefore, in this paper, we study an optimal network topology for attacks and departures tolerance., The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 04 Oct. 2012, IEICE technical report, 112, 231, 19-24, Japanese, 0913-5685, 110009636343, AA11546431

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (Fostering Joint International Research (B)), Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Fund for the Promotion of Joint International Research (Fostering Joint International Research (B)), , 18KK0109
