- Quantum droplets with magnetic vortices in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates
Shaoxiong Li; Hiroki Saito
Corresponding, Physical Review Research, American Physical Society (APS), 6, 4, L042049-1-L042049-10, 25 Nov. 2024, Peer-reviwed, Motivated by the recent experimental realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of europium atoms, we investigate the self-bound droplet state for a dipolar BEC with spin degrees of freedom. Under a sufficiently weak magnetic field, the droplet has a torus shape with circulating spin vectors, which is referred to as a magnetic vortex. The ground state transforms from a torus to a cigar shape through bistability with increasing magnetic field. Dynamical change of the magnetic field causes the torus to rotate due to the Einstein–de Haas effect. The magnetic vortices form a supersolid in a confined system.

Physics Letters, Section A: General, Atomic and Solid State Physics, Elsevier B.V., 382, 25, 1690-1694, 26 Jun. 2018, Peer-reviwed, We consider a pseudospin-1/2 Bose–Einstein condensate with Rashba spin–orbit coupling in a two-dimensional toroidal trap. By solving the damped Gross–Pitaevskii equations for this system, we show that the system exhibits a rich variety of stationary states, such as vehicle wheel and flower-petal stripe patterns. These stationary states are stable against perturbation with thermal energy and can survive for a long time. In the presence of rotation, our results show that the rotating systems have exotic vortex configurations. These phenomenon originates from the interplay among spin–orbit coupling, trap geometry, and rotation.

Physical Review A, American Physical Society, 97, 6, 063607/1-063607/7, 11 Jun. 2018, Peer-reviwed, We explore the effects of system parameters on the dynamics of ring dark solitons (RDSs) and vortices followed by the collapse of RDSs in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The system exhibits complicated dynamical behaviors, which are quite different from those in a scalar BEC. For two shallow RDSs with equal initial depths, the dynamical trajectories of generated vortex dipoles are similar to those in a scalar BEC, but the time for vortex dipoles to perform a periodic motion is increased. In particular, there exists a critical depth, above which vortex dipoles first move along the vertical direction and then preform complicated dynamics, including their rearrangement and recombination. Finally, we consider the case of unequal initial depths and find that the number of created vortices is determined by the depth of the shallow RDS, while their initial moving direction is determined by the deeper one.

Physical Review A, American Physical Society, 97, 2, 023625/1-023625/9, 16 Feb. 2018, Peer-reviwed, We study fingering instabilities and pattern formation at the interface of an oppositely polarized two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with strong dipole-dipole interactions in three dimensions. It is shown that the rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken by fingering instability when the dipole-dipole interactions are strengthened. Frog-shaped and mushroom-shaped patterns emerge during the dynamics due to the dipolar interactions. We also demonstrate the spontaneous density modulation and domain growth of a two-component dipolar BEC in the dynamics. Bogoliubov analyses in the two-dimensional approximation are performed, and the characteristic lengths of the domains are estimated analytically. Patterns resembling those in magnetic classical fluids are modulated when the number ratio of atoms, the trap ratio of the external potential, or tilted polarization with respect to the z direction is varied.

Physical Review A, American Physical Society, 97, 2, 021602/1-021602/5, 13 Feb. 2018, Peer-reviwed, The spinor dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates of Rb87 atoms with hyperfine spins of 1 and 2 are investigated. A mixture of spinor condensates is generated in the transversely polarized spin-1 and the longitudinally polarized spin-2 states using simultaneous Ramsey interferometry. In the subsequent dynamics, temporal modulation of spin-1 magnetization is observed in the spinor mixture due to the spin-dependent interaction with the spin-2 component. By comparison with numerical simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that the observed nonferromagnetic dynamics reflect the ground-state properties of the spinor mixture.

Physical Review A, American Physical Society, 97, 2, 023622/1-023622/10, 13 Feb. 2018, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the ground-state phases of a mixture of spin-1 and spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates at zero magnetic field. In addition to the intraspin interactions, two spin-dependent interaction coefficients are introduced to describe the interspin interaction. We systematically explore the wide parameter space, and obtain phase diagrams containing a rich variety of phases. For example, there exists a phase in which the spin-1 and spin-2 vectors are tilted relative to each other breaking the axial symmetry.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, Physical Society of Japan, 87, 1, 014001/1-014001/8, 2018, Peer-reviwed, We have developed a variational method to obtain many-body ground states of the Bose-Hubbard model using feedforward artificial neural networks. A fully connected network with a single hidden layer works better than a fully connected network with multiple hidden layers, and a multilayer convolutional network is more efficient than a fully connected network. AdaGrad and Adam are optimization methods that work well. Moreover, we show that many-body ground states with different numbers of particles can be generated by a single network.

We numerically investigate the dynamics of the system and find that it depends not only on the velocity of the obstacle but also significantly on the direction of obstacle motion, both of which are verified by the Bogoliubov analysis. The excitation diagram with respect to the velocity and direction is obtained. The dependence of the critical velocity on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling and the size of the obstacle is also investigated.

Masaya Kato; Xiao-Fei Zhang; Hiroki Saito
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 95, 4, 043605/1-7, Apr. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Static and dynamic properties of vortices in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are investigated. The mass current around a vortex core in the plane-wave phase is found to be deformed by the spin-orbit coupling, and this makes the dynamics of the vortex pairs quite different from those in a scalar Bose-Einstein condensate. The velocity of a vortex-antivortex pair is much smaller than that without spin-orbit coupling, and there exist stationary states. Two vortices with the same circulation move away from each other or unite to form a stationary state.

PHYSICAL REVIEW B, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 94, 16, 165306-1-165306-6, Oct. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Self-rotation occurs in an exciton-polariton condensate in a two-dimensional semiconductor microcavity pumped by a nonresonant Gaussian laser beam. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 94, 3, 033611-1-033611-9, Sep. 2016, Peer-reviwed, We show that double-quantum spin vortices, which are characterized by doubly quantized circulating spin currents and unmagnetized filled cores, can exist in the ground states of SU(3) spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases. It is found that the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling and spin-exchange interaction play important roles in determining the ground-state phase diagram. In the case of effective ferromagnetic spin interaction, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling induces a threefold degeneracy to the magnetized ground state, while in the antiferromagnetic spin interaction case, the SU(3) spin-orbit coupling breaks the ordinary phase rule of spinor Bose gases and allows the spontaneous emergence of double-quantum spin vortices. This exotic topological defect is in stark contrast to the singly quantized spin vortices observed in existing experiments and can be readily observed by the current magnetization-sensitive phase-contrast imaging technique.

NEW JOURNAL OF PHYSICS, IOP PUBLISHING LTD, 18, 073029-1-073029-6, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, We have observed and characterized the nonequilibrium spatial dynamics of a two-component Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) that is controllable switched back and forth between the miscible and immiscible phases of the phase separation transition by changing the internal states of the Rb-87 atoms. The subsequent evolution exhibits large scale oscillations of the spatial structure that involve component mixing and separation. We show that the larger total energy of the miscible system results in a higher oscillation frequency. This investigation introduces a new technique to control the miscibility and the spatial degrees of freedom in atomic BECs.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 93, 3, 033611-1-033611-6, Mar. 2016, Peer-reviwed, The dynamics of skyrmions in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is numerically investigated in the mean-field theory. When two skyrmions collide with each other, they are first united and then scattered into various states. For head-on collisions, skyrmions with unit winding number are scattered. The collision dynamics with an impact parameter are shown to depend on the relative phase. These dynamic processes are characterized by integer winding numbers.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 93, 3, 033615/1-033615/6, Mar. 2016, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the dynamic properties of bouncing and penetration in colliding binary and ternaryBose-Einstein condensates comprised of different Zeeman or hyperfine states of Rb-87. Through the application ofmagnetic field gradient pulses, two-or three-component condensates in an optical trap are spatially separated and then made to collide. The subsequent evolutions are classified into two categories: repeated bouncing motion and mutual penetration after damped bounces. We experimentally observed mutual penetration for immiscible condensates, bouncing between miscible condensates, and domain formation for miscible condensates. From numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we find that the penetration time can be tuned by slightly changing the atomic interaction strengths.

We numerically demonstrate the formation of droplet patterns and crystalline structures, decay of droplets, and hysteresis behavior, which are in good agreement with the experiment. Our numerical simulations provide the first prediction on the values of the three-body interaction in a Dy164 Bose-Einstein condensate. We also predict that the droplets remain stable during the time-of-flight expansion. From our results, further experiments investigating the three-body interaction in dipolar quantum gases are required.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 92, 1, 013611-1-013611-5, Jul. 2015, Peer-reviwed, We investigate flow properties of immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates composed of two different Zeeman spin states of Rb-87. Two spatially overlapping condensates in the optical trap are prepared by application of a resonant radio-frequency pulse, and then the magnetic field gradient is applied in order to produce the atomic flow. We find that the spontaneous multiple-domain formation arising from the immiscible nature drastically changes the fluidity. The homogeneously overlapping condensates readily separate under the magnetic field gradient, and they form a stable configuration composed of the two layers. In contrast, the relative flow between two condensates is largely suppressed in the case where the magnetic field gradient is applied after spontaneous domain formation.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 90, 1, 013626, Jul. 2014, Peer-reviwed, We generate spin currents in an Rb-87 spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate by application of a magnetic field gradient. The spin current destroys the spin polarization, leading to a sudden onset of two-body collisions. In addition, the spin coherence, as measured by the fringe contrast using Ramsey interferometry, is reduced drastically but experiences a weak revival due to in-trap oscillations. The spin current can be controlled using periodic p pulses (bang-bang control), producing longer spin-coherence times. Our results show that spin coherence can be maintained even in the presence of spin currents, with applications to quantum sensing in noisy environments.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 112, 18, 185301, May 2014, Peer-reviwed, We report the formation of spin texture resulting from the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in a spin-2 Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensate. The spinor condensate is prepared in the transversely polarized spin state and the time evolution is observed under a magnetic field of 90 mG with a gradient of 3 mG/cm using Stern-Gerlach imaging. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which reveals that the observed spatial modulation of the longitudinal magnetization is due to the spin precession in an effective magnetic field produced by the dipole-dipole interaction. These results show that the dipole-dipole interaction has considerable effects even on spinor condensates of alkali metal atoms.

Procedia IUTAM, 9, 121-128, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Dynamics of a superfluid flow past an obstacle are investigated by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. For appropriate velocity and size of the obstacle, quantized vortices are periodically generated in the wake, which form a Bénard-von Kármán vortex street. It is found that vibration of an obstacle modulates the vortex street, breaking a symmetry. The parameter dependence of the modulation dynamics of vortices is investigated. © 2013 The Authors.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 82, 6, 063604, Dec. 2010, Peer-reviwed, Dynamical instabilities at the interface between two Bose-Einstein condensates that are moving relative to each other are investigated using mean-field and Bogoliubov analyses. Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is dominant when the interface thickness is much smaller than the wavelength of the unstable interface mode, whereas the counter-superflow instability becomes dominant in the opposite case. These instabilities emerge not only in an immiscible system but also in a miscible system where an interface is produced by external potential. Dynamics caused by these instabilities are numerically demonstrated in rotating trapped condensates.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 82, 4, 043627, Oct. 2010, Peer-reviwed, We study the spin dynamics of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and nonstationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the periodicity of the order differs by a factor of 3 and the checkerboard pattern eventually dissolves in the course of time. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 80, 4, 042704, Oct. 2009, Peer-reviwed, We studied spin-dependent two-body inelastic collisions in F=2 (87)Rb Bose-Einstein condensates both experimentally and theoretically. The (87)Rb condensates were confined in an optical trap and selectively prepared in various spin states in the F=2 manifold at a magnetic field of 3.0 G. The measured atom loss rates depend on the spin states of colliding atoms. We measured two fundamental loss coefficients for two-body inelastic collisions with total spins of 0 and 2. The loss coefficients determine the loss rates of all the spin pairs. The experimental results for mixtures of all spin combinations are in good agreement with numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations that include the effect of a magnetic field gradient.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 101, 8, 080401, Aug. 2008, Peer-reviwed, We investigate the collapse dynamics of a dipolar condensate of (52)Cr atoms when the s-wave scattering length characterizing the contact interaction is reduced below a critical value. A complex dynamics, involving an anisotropic, d-wave symmetric explosion of the condensate, is observed. The atom number decreases abruptly during the collapse. We find good agreement between our experimental results and those of a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including contact and dipolar interactions as well as three-body losses. The simulation indicates that the collapse induces the formation of two vortex rings with opposite circulations.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 76, 4, 043613, Oct. 2007, Peer-reviwed, It is shown that spin vortices are created through the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in the quantum phase transition of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate when the applied magnetic field is quenched to below a critical value. It is also shown that the spin correlation functions have finite correlation lengths, and that the magnetization at widely separated positions grows in random directions, resulting in spontaneous creation of spin vortices. We numerically confirm the scaling laws that the winding number of spin vortices is proportional to the square root of the length of a closed path and, for a slow quench, is proportional to tau(-1/6)(Q) with tau(Q) being the quench time. The relevance of spin conservation to the Kibble-Zurek mechanism is discussed.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 98, 11, Mar. 2007, Peer-reviwed, Weak dipolar effects in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) have recently been predicted to develop spin textures. However, observation of the spin textures requires us to decrease the magnetic field down to similar to 10 mu G for spin-1 alkali BECs, so that they are not washed out by the Zeeman effect. We present a scheme to observe the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in alkali BECs under a realistic magnetic field of similar to 100 mG. PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 75, 1, 013621, Jan. 2007, We study the dynamics of the quantum phase transition of a ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from the polar phase to the broken-axisymmetry phase by changing magnetic field, and find the spontaneous formation of spinor domain walls followed by the creation of polar-core spin vortices. We also find that the spin textures depend very sensitively on the initial noise distribution, and that an anisotropic and colored initial noise is needed to reproduce the Berkeley experiment [Sadler et al., Nature (London) 443, 312 (2006)]. The dynamics of vortex nucleation and the number of created vortices depend also on the manner in which the magnetic field is changed. We point out an analogy between the formation of spin vortices from domain walls in a spinor BEC and that of vortex-antivortex pairs from dark solitons in a scalar BEC.

R Kanamoto; H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 73, 3, 033611, Mar. 2006, Peer-reviwed, We employ mean-field, Bogoliubov and many-body theories to study critical fluctuations in the position and momentum of a Bose-Einstein condensate whose translation symmetry is spontaneously broken due to attractive interactions. In a homogeneous system, the many-body ground state of the symmetry-preserving Hamiltonian is very fragile against superposition of low-lying states, while the mean-field theory predicts a stable bright soliton which spontaneously breaks translation symmetry. We show that weak symmetry-breaking perturbations cause the translation-symmetric many-body ground state to cross over to a many-body bright soliton. We argue that the center-of-mass fluctuations in the soliton state arise primarily from the depletion of the condensate to translation modes. We develop an extended mean-field theory to analytically reproduce these results obtained by the exact diagonalization method.

ATOMIC PHYSICS 20, AMER INST PHYSICS, 869, 165-+, 2006, Peer-reviwed, A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) offers an ideal testing ground for studying symmetry breaking, because a trapped BEC system is in a mesoscopic regime, and situations exist under which symmetry breaking may or may not occur. Investigating this problem can explain why mean-field theories have been so successful in elucidating gaseous BEC systems and when many-body effects play a significant role. We substantiate these ideas in four distinct situations: namely, soliton formation in attractive BECs, vortex nucleation in rotating BECs, spontaneous magnetization in spinor BECs, and spin texture formation in dipolar BECs.

Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, 72, 5, Nov. 2005, Peer-reviwed, We propose a method of using spin exchange dynamics to determine the coefficient of the spin-singlet pair term of a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by preparing the initial populations in the magnetic sublevels 0 and ±2 with appropriate relative phases. This method is suitable for a BEC with a short lifetime, since only the initial change in the population of each magnetic sublevel is needed. Our method therefore enables the determination of the ground-state phase of a spin-2 Rb87 BEC at zero magnetic field, which is considered to lie in the immediate vicinity of the boundary between the antiferromagnetic and cyclic phases. We propose a scheme to prepare the initial state in which the relative phases between the magnetic sublevels are controlled. We also propose a simple scheme to distinguish between the antiferromagnetic and cyclic phases under a situation of very low bias magnetic field. © 2005 The American Physical Society.

PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 94, 9, 090404, Mar. 2005, Peer-reviwed, An exact diagonalization study reveals that a matter-wave bright soliton and the Goldstone mode are simultaneously created in a quasi-one-dimensional attractive Bose-Einstein condensate by superpositions of quasidegenerate low-lying many-body states. Upon formation of the soliton the maximum eigenvalue of the single-particle density matrix increases dramatically, indicating that a fragmented condensate converts into a single condensate as a consequence of the breaking of translation symmetry.

JOURNAL OF LOW TEMPERATURE PHYSICS, SPRINGER/PLENUM PUBLISHERS, 138, 3-4, 681-686, Feb. 2005, Peer-reviwed, In terms of the many-body energy spectrum obtained by a diagonalization of Hamiltonian, we discuss the Hess-Fiarbank effect in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate on a one-dimensional ring. Depending on the strength of interaction and the rotational frequency of the container, there exist two characteristic features in the spectrum. We argue that the existence of a regime of a huge number of low-lying levels causes the smearing of the plateau of the quantized circulation in contrast to conventional superfluids with repulsive interaction.

H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 93, 22, 220402, Nov. 2004, A rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is shown to exhibit a Bloch band structure even in the absence of a periodic potential. Vortices enter the condensate via Bragg reflection if the frequency of a rotating drive is adiabatically increased or decreased, or if the interaction is adiabatically changed at a constant rotating drive. A localized state analogous to a gap soliton in a periodic system is predicted to occur near the edge of the Brillouin zone.

H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 70, 5, 053610, Nov. 2004, A "gaseous droplet"-a stable gas that coheres by itself in free space-is shown to be produced with a Bose-Einstein condensate. Collapse and expansion of the droplet are suppressed by rapid oscillations of the interatomic interaction between attractive and repulsive through, e.g., the Feshbach resonance. Energy dissipation, which is present in realistic situations, is found to play a crucial role in suppressing dynamical instabilities that destabilize the droplet.
Scientific journal, English - Split-merge cycle, fragmented collapse, and vortex disintegration in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions
H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 69, 1, 013604, Jan. 2004, The dynamical instabilities and ensuing dynamics of singly and doubly quantized vortex states of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions are investigated using full three-dimensional numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. With increasing the strength of attractive interactions, a series of dynamical instabilities such as quadrupole, dipole, octupole, and monopole instabilities emerge. The most prominent instability depends on the strength of interactions, the geometry of the trapping potential, and deviations from the axisymmetry due to external perturbations. Singly quantized vortices split into two clusters and subsequently undergo split-merge cycles in a pancake-shaped trap, whereas the split fragments immediately collapse in a spherical trap. Doubly quantized vortices are always unstable to disintegration of the vortex core. If we suddenly change the strength of interaction to within a certain range, the vortex splits into three clusters, and one of the clusters collapses after a few split-merge cycles. The vortex split can be observed using a current experimental setup of Leanhardt et at. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 190403 (2002)].

JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN, 72, 140-143, Nov. 2003, Peer-reviwed, We present two novel phenomena concerning bright solitons in a gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interatomic interactions. (1) For the strength of interaction larger than a critical one, a vortex splits into two clusters (solitons) via the quadrupole dynamical instability. (2) A soliton can be stabilized in 2D free space by making the strength of interactions oscillate rapidly.

Masahito Ueda; Hiroki Saito
JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN, 72, 127-133, Nov. 2003, Peer-reviwed, We present a consistent picture of the recent JILA experiments on the collapse of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) [E. A. Donley, et al.: Nature 412 (2001) 295] based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation that incorporates the effect of a three-body loss. The questions we address in this paper are: (1) Why does a BEC survive, albeit partially, after the collapse? (2) Why does the number of the remnant BEC atoms observed at JILA exceed the critical value? (3) What is the origin of the atom burst? (4) What is the origin of the atom jet and is it coherent? We review our predictions on pattern formation in the course of collapse and on the split instability of vortices that can test our collapsing theory.

H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 68, 4, 043820, Oct. 2003, Spin squeezing of an ensemble of N atoms in a high-Q cavity is enhanced by continuous measurement of photons in the cavity. A degree of spin squeezing proportional to N-1/3 is achieved as a quasi-steady-state over a broad set of initial states of atoms and photons. Our method of spin squeezing is robust against the imperfect photodetection efficiency in current experiments.

R Kanamoto; H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 68, 4, 043619, Oct. 2003, We investigate rotational properties of a system of attractive bosons confined in a one-dimensional torus. Two kinds of ground states, uniform-density and bright soliton, are obtained analytically as functions of the strength of interaction and of the rotational frequency of the torus. The quantization of circulation appears in the uniform-density state, but disappears upon formation of the soliton. By comparing the results of exact diagonalization with those predicted by the Bogoliubov theory, we show that the Bogoliubov theory is valid at absolute zero over a wide range of parameters. At finite temperatures we employ the exact diagonalization method to examine how thermal fluctuations smear the plateaus of the quantized circulation. Finally, by rotating the system with an axisymmetry-breaking potential, we clarify the process by which the quantized circulation becomes thermodynamically stabilized.

Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics, American Physical Society, 68, 4 B, 043619/12, 2003, The rotational properties of one-dimensional bosons with attractive interactions confined in a rotating torus trap were studied. The ground-state wave function was derived analytically within the MFT as a function of the strength of interaction γ and of the rotational frequency of the torus Ω. A uniform-density solution and a bright-soliton one were found to cross over each other smoothly. In order to investigate the validity of the Bogoliubov theory, the excitation spectrum obtained by the Bogoliubov theory was compared to that obtained by the exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. It was observed that the MFT well describes the ground state and the low-lying excited states.

R Kanamoto; H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 67, 1, 013608, Jan. 2003, Motivated by the recent development of the Feshbach technique, we studied the ground and low-lying excited states of attractive Bose-Einstein condensates on a one-dimensional ring as a function of the strength of interactions. The Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory predicts a quantum phase transition between a uniform condensate and a bright soliton, and a gapless singular cusp in the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum at the critical point. However, the exact diagonalization reveals the presence of an energy gap at the critical point, where the singularity is smeared by quantum fluctuations.

PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 65, 5, 053804, May 2002, The moving-mirror problem is microscopically formulated without invoking the external boundary conditions. The moving mirrors are described by the quantized matter field interacting with the photon field, forming dynamical cavity polaritons: photons in the cavity are dressed by electrons in the moving mirrors. The effective Hamiltonian for the polariton is derived, and corrections to the results based on the external boundary conditions are discussed.
Scientific journal, English - Mean-field analysis of collapsing and exploding Bose-Einstein condensates
H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 65, 3, 033624, Mar. 2002, The dynamics of collapsing and exploding Bose-Einstein condensates caused by a sudden switch of interactions from repulsive to attractive are studied by numerically integrating the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with atomic loss for an axially symmetric trap. We investigate the decay rate of condensates and the phenomena of bursts and jets of atoms, and compare our results with those of the experiments performed by E. A. Donley et al. [Nature (London) 412, 295 (2001)]. Our study suggests that the condensate decay and the burst production is due to local intermittent implosions in the condensate, and that atomic clouds of bursts and jets are coherent. We also predict nonlinear pattern formation caused by the density instability of attractive condensates.
Scientific journal, English - Power laws and collapsing dynamics of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions
H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC, 63, 4, 043601, Apr. 2001, The critical behavior of collective modes and the collapsing dynamics of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions are studied analytically and numerically. The time scales of these dynamics both below and above the critical point of the collapse are found to obey power laws with a single parameter of N/N-c-1, where N is the number of condensate atoms and N-c is the critical number. The collapsing condensate eventually undergoes rapid implosion, which occurs several times intermittently, and then the implosion turns to an explosion. The release energy of the explosion is found to be proportional to the square of the interaction strength, inversely proportional to the three-body recombination rate, and independent of the number of condensate atoms and the trap frequency.

English - Squeezed few-photon states of the field generated from squeezed atoms
H Saito; M Ueda
PHYSICAL REVIEW A, AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 59, 5, 3959-3974, May 1999, This paper develops a method of manipulating the squeezed atom state to generate a few-photon state whose phase or photon-number fluctuations are prescribed at our disposal. The squeezed-atom state is a collective atomic state whose quantum fluctuations in population difference or collective dipole are smaller than those of the coherent atom state. It is shown that the squeezed-atom state can be generated by the interaction of atoms with a coherent state of the electromagnetic field, and that it can be used as a tunable source of squeezed radiation. A variety of squeezed states, including the photon-number squeezed state and the phase squeezed state, can be produced by manipulating the atomic state. This is owing to the fact that quantum-statistical information of the atomic state is faithfully transferred to that of the photon state. Possible experimental situations to implement our theory are discussed. [S1050-2947(99)02905-4].

H Saito; H Hyuga
JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN, 65, 11, 3513-3523, Nov. 1996, Dynamical Casimir effects caused by a moving mirror and a varying dielectric medium are studied in the effective Hamiltonian approach. The explicit form of the effective Hamiltonian for the uniform, step-wise, and time-dependent dielectric model is derived in addition to that for the moving mirror model. The resonant properties of induced photons for both models are considered and it is found that in contrast to the moving mirror case, the inter-mode transition for the dielectric case is suppressed between the odd-odd levels and between the even-even levels. The effects of dissipation are also taken into account by the master equation. For numerical analyses, a convenient method to integrate the time evolution is proposed.

JOURNAL OF THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN, PHYSICAL SOC JAPAN, 65, 5, 1139-1142, May 1996, Field evolution in a cavity including a time-varying dielectric is studied by determining the effective Hamiltonian. For a uniform dielectric, the Hamiltonian is obtained explicitly, and we use it to discuss photon creation in the case of an oscillating dielectric constant. It is shown that the mode amplification is similar to that in the case of a moving mirror, but the intermode transition is suppressed. This property enables us to amplify a selected mode alone, unlike in the moving mirror case.

Magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) can induce spin textures, even though it is weaker than other interactions. The key feature of the dipolar interaction is that it is spin-orbit coupling interaction which conserves total angular momentum. Therefore, at extremely low magnetic field, an initially spin-polarized BEC starts rotating spontaneously. Moreover, spin textures develop in the ground state, leading to spontaneous mass current. Such dipolar effect should be observed in a spinor BEC of ^<87>Rb atoms., The Physical Society of Japan (JPS), Aug. 2009, 日本物理学会誌, 64, 8, 623-627, Japanese, Introduction other, 0029-0181, 110007360062, AN00196952 - 磁性超流動体におけるスーパーノヴァ

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, We studies superfluid properties of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with internal degrees of freedom. We have numerically demonstrated that by changing an external magnetic field spin vortices are spontaneously generated. This provides an atomic-gas demonstration of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We have also demonstrated that exotic topological excitations such as knots and non-Abelian vortices can be created in spinor BECs., 17071005

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas, The A4 group consisted of theoreticians working on the physics of BEC. (1) Ueda's group studied on the physics of BEC under attractive interaction. The state of the attractive BEC is at best a metastable state and eventually collapses. They studied the mechanism of the BEC collapsing and found that a BEC near the critical temperature grows macroscopic quantum tunneling, and then the BEC collapses. The found also the quantization of circulation that was guaranteed in a repulsive BEC was only partially satisfied in an attractive BEC. The quantization of circulation is know as a signature of superfluidity. The breakdown of the quantization in an attractive BEC adds new insight on the fundamental properties of BEC. They studied also the dynamics of BEC when the interaction is switched from repulsive to attractive. Their findings are (i) when a large BEC is switched from repulsive to attractive interaction, various nonlinear pattern (shell structure, layered structure,....) is expected to appear. (ii) They studied the dynamics of vortex generated when the interaction is repulsive. They found various dynamical instabilities that was a function of the interaction strength. The instabilities cause fracture of the vortex, and the vortex collapses. (iii) They showed in an attractive BEC two-dimensional bright is stabilized if the sign and amplitude of the interaction potential is modulated. Ohmi and Machida studied on me phase separation of multi-state BEC, dynamics of the phase transition, a new method of generating vortices, and on the stability of vortices., 11216204
