In this study, we developed an ice crystal trajectory simulation, considering the state changes of ice crystals with a forced convection model, indicating a significant difference in impinging ice crystal content on the blade for tiny ice crystals. Then, ice crystal trajectory simulations were performed for the rotor blade of an axial fan to investigate the effects of ice crystal size and relative humidity on collision characteristics. The results indicate that the surrounding air affects the composition of tiny ice crystals before collision, and the flight time until impingement on the rotor blade varies significantly depending on the span position. Among them, ice crystals with a diameter of 50 μm impinge with water content that is most likely to adhere to the blade. Three-dimensional simulation results show that many ice crystals impinge not only on the leading edge, where icing occurs as revealed by the two-dimensional simulations but also on the trailing edge of the hub side. This study emphasizes the importance of evaluating the three-dimensional impingement position and water content in the prediction of ice crystal icing.

This study performs direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flows. The traveling-wave-like body force is employed as the flow control technique to break the similarity between momentum and heat transfer. The traveling wave control mimics the self-excited thin film in the corresponding experimental study. When the wave traveled slowly along the downstream direction, the skin-friction drag, heat transfer, and analogy factor were found to increase. Moreover, these parameters increased with an increase in the reference height of the traveling wave ( hw). Flow visualization shows turbulence enhancement owing to the increase in hw. Three-component decomposition elucidates the difference between the control effect on the Reynolds shear stress and the turbulent heat flux.

Cooled EGR system with a heat exchanger (EGR cooler) for diesel engines has been used for emission improvement for a long time. Since diesel engines tend to generate much soot, however, the performance of the EGR cooler is likely to decrease due to the deposited soot. The flow of EGR gas is computed by Eulerian method and the soot particles are simulated due to Lagrangian approach. Because this new analysis is combined the merits of each method, the present authors call this procedure as Multiphysics simulation. The trajectory of soot particles was analyzed and the situation of accumulation by thermophoretic force was clarified. Then changes in heat transfer due to deposited soot were compared in various fin shapes. The authors found that the thermophoretic force and the generation of longitudinal vortices are important for reasonably simulating the soot deposition phenomenon.

If factors contributing to initiation were identified, it would be possible to predict the initiation of aneurysms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between cerebral aneurysm initiation and hemodynamic factors. Blood flow simulations in aneurysms of three patients were performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on the cerebral blood vessel geometry before aneurysm initiation. We evaluated pressure, wall shear stress (WSS), wall shear stress gradient (WSSG), oscillatory shear index (OSI) and gradient oscillatory number (GON) since these factors are known to be associated with aneurysmal initiation. We also focused on the wall shear stress divergence (WSSD) in particular on the direction of WSS. Our results indicated that only high WSSD regions corresponded to the initiation regions, and the value of WSSD was remarkably high. Stretching force to the vessel wall may be related to the initiation of cerebral aneurysms.

The objective of this study was to find a rupture prediction indicator (RPI) based on hemodynamic parameters of unruptured aneurysms focusing on the internal carotid (IC) and middle cerebral (MC) arteries. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed and hemodynamic parameters were calculated using three-dimensional C-arm computed tomography (3D C-arm CT) images of a total of 137 unruptured aneurysms (69 IC and 68 MC artery aneurysms) with known outcomes of rupture or unrupture. Multivariate analysis was applied to build an RPI model. The final RPI models contained the pressure-loss coefficient at the time maximum (TMAXPLc). Ruptured aneurysms were found to have lower TMAXPLc than unruptured aneurysms. The mean values were 1.002 (95%CI 0.827 to 1.177) and 1.466 (95%CI 1.352 to 1.579), respectively (P=0.002). TMAXPLc may thus be a useful parameter for rupture prediction of IC and MC artery aneurysms.

Larger aneurysms are believed to be more likely to rupture and should therefore be treated. Recently, flow diverters (FDs) are widely used to treat large or wide neck aneurysms. However, it can be difficult to treat them by deployment of a single FD because of its insufficient flow disturbance. To overcome this problem, double stenting technique is sometimes applied with the aim to improve the effect of blood velocity reduction. In this study, we used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the hemodynamic changes in an aneurysm when deploying virtual FDs. The results showed that the characteristics of the blood flow field inside the aneurysm did not changed much after the deployment of a single FD but underwent a large change after the deployment of two FDs. Furthermore, the velocity reduction in the aneurysm sac at a plane away from the parent artery increased from 25.9% to 92.8% when two FDs were deployed instead of one compared to no stenting. Double stenting was effective to decrease blood velocity in large or wide neck aneurysms.

Acoustic panels installed in the fan duct can reduce the noise emission while it induces the pressure loss. In order to achieve the suppression of the noise emission and the low duct loss simultaneously, we have designed new acoustic panel and conducted implicit large eddy simulations of the duct flow with the panel in this study. Since the Mach numbers in the duct and the hole of the cavity are extremely different, we have employed an all speed Roe scheme for compressible flow solvers. The turbulence is induced by a roughness block. We have found that the turbulent boundary layer becomes thinner just downstream of the hole in the duct since a part of the turbulence goes into the cavity.

Its deposition mechanism has not been clarified yet. In this study, we perform numerical simulations of a rectangular duct flow with a flat plate to investigate nano-particle motion and its deposition phenomenon. The Euler-Lagrange coupling method is employed to reproduce interaction between particles and the flow field. The results show that the thermophoresis dominates nano-particle motion and the deposition layer forms around the flat plate on the low temperature wall of the duct. Due to the adiabatic deposition layer, however, the thermophoresis effect decreases.

The acoustic waves are significantly affected by temperature of jets. In this study, we perform large eddy simulations of the hot and cold jets that generate the acoustic waves. The temperature ratio of chamber to ambient air is set to be 4.0 and 1.0 for the hot and cold jets, respectively. High frequency Mach waves are radiated from the region close to the nozzle exit. As closer to the potential core, the frequency of radiated Mach waves continuously becomes low. In the hot jet case, we confirmed that the shorter potential core length, the larger angle of Mach waves, and the higher sound pressure level, as compared with those in the cold jet case.

Therefore, sand erosion phenomenon is one of serious problems in gas-turbine engines and anti-erosion coating techniques have been developed recently. In this paper, numerical simulations of the jet flows including sand particles impinging on a plate are performed. The jet flow impinges on the coated ceramic material composite substrate and the particles erode its surface. We simulated two types of coated CMC, the Coating A and the Coating B. It is found that due to larger Young's modulus, the erosion rate of the Coating A substrate is smaller than that of the Coating B substrate.

The deposition phenomenon results in decrease of turbine performance while its mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the deposition phenomenon is investigated by means of three-dimensional numerical simulation with an adherence model by considering the latent heat. We have compared the obtained diameter of the adhesive droplet with the experimental data and confirmed that the present method can predict the droplet behavior well. Fingering shapes of the droplet are observed, which are also found in the experiments with the same condition.

According to studies after the earthquake, breakwaters mounded the bottom of the bay were destroyed by the tsunami and their disaster mitigation effect did not work. For tolerant breakwater of tsunami struck, we investigate effect of submarine plates which are set close to breakwaters. In the present study, we conduct numerical simulations of the flow around breakwaters with the submarine plate. The MARS method is employed to capture the free surface of tsunami and the k-ε model is used as turbulence model. Results show that the submarine plate decreases wave forces of tsunami and a breakwater's tolerance of tsunami is improved.

The interest of this study is focused on the flow field, aerodynamic load fluctuation and performance of the downstream turbine in the wake of the upstream turbine. A CFD analysis code, rFlow3D, developed in Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is adopted for this purpose. Computations in this paper are conducted using the Quasi-DNS solver because it is well adapted for relatively low Reynolds numbers in the order of 10^5〜10^6. The results show that the velocity fluctuation in the wake and the wake interference ratio dominate the aerodynamic load fluctuation of the downstream rotor. Furthermore, the power change trend of downstream rotor due to the change of the lateral distance between the rotors is also confirmed. The results will contribute to the design guideline of large-scale wind farms.

A CFD analysis code rFlow3D is applied to this computation. The IPC system is a load-based feedback type, which can control the pitch angle of the blades in a rated rotational frequency. The purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of the IPC system and its effect on load mitigation to wind turbine in stable condition. The results indicate that the IPC system is capable to reduce fluctuation for tilt moment. Furthermore, it is observed that the system is capable to lower fatigue load of yaw and tilt moment on rotor and thrust on a blade.

Technol., The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 4, 1, 64-75, 2010, Peer-reviwed, Null, A consistent scheme for computation of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy budgets is proposed for incompressible turbulent flow simulation using the finite difference method on a nonuniform staggered grid system. The present scheme is derived from the Navier-Stokes equation discretized by using the second-order energy-conservative finite differential method. The Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy budgets in a fully developed channel flow computed by using the proposed schemes are compared with those by using the consistent scheme proposed for a uniform grid [Suzuki and Kawamura, Trans. JSME/B, Vol. 60, No. 578 (1994), pp. 3280-3286] and an intuitive scheme. The residuals in the Reynolds normal stress and turbulent kinetic energy budgets computed by using the present scheme and Suzuki-Kawamura scheme are found to be both sufficiently small. We also apply the same idea to the discretization of Reynolds shear stress budget, although the consistency is imperfect, be derived the numerical test shows that the residual is slightly smaller than that computed by the other schemes.

Lead, Icing is a phenomenon that super-cooled droplets impinge on a solid surface and accrete on it. Many studies on ice accretion have been conducted because the icing phenomenon causes serious problems in various places. Because there are many unknown physical properties of the super-cooled droplet, the detailed freezing process of super-cooled droplets has not been clarified yet. In the previous study, we reproduced static freezing process of super-cooled droplet by the numerical simulation. Therefore, in this study, we simulate dynamic freezing process when it impinges on the flat plate. Lead, In recent years, the utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in various industrial fields has broadened following developments in computer technology. Although mainstream CFD is currently based on a grid method in an Eulerian framework, it is difficult to apply this to the simulation of problems in which large deformations of interfaces between phases occur. For this reason, particle methods are now receiving attention. In this study, we developed a numerical method to couple the particle and grid methods in order to simulate a gas-liquid two-phase flow. We conducted numerical tests on present numerical method with an impingement-jet to the liquid surface and the results show reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Lead, The effects of nozzle geometry on the acoustic waves from Mach 1.9 supersonic jet are experimentally investigated. PIV and microphone measurements are conducted to analyze the relationship between flows and acoustic waves. In this study, three different nozzles of conical nozzle, convergent-divergent nozzle (C-D) nozzle, and tab C-D nozzle in which tab is attached in nozzle inlet to generate disturbance are considered. Three noise sources are identified. Conical nozzle case shows screech and broad band shock noise spectra because of the existence of strong shock train in flow. For the other two cases (C-D nozzle and tab nozzle), there are not clear shock associated noise spectra due to nearly ideally expanded condition by the nozzle geometries so that turbulent mixing noise should be dominant. Tab nozzle case shows higher frequency acoustic spectra than that of C-D case. Lead, Icing simulations are of importance in the development of aircraft and jet engines. Currently, icing simulations are performed in the Eulerian framework. On the other hand, we employed the MPS method which is a mesh-free method in the Lagrangian framework. In addition, the MPS method can predict liquid interface if its deformation is large. Our final goal is to perform the three-dimensional icing simulation on NACA airfoil. In the present paper, we perform icing of one droplet as for a preliminary. The obtained result indicates that the three-dimensional icing simulation using MPS method reproduces the complex ice shape even in the two-dimensional simulation. In the previous DNS of turbulent channel flows, Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the half height of channel, Re_τ, has reached about 2500 owing to developments of supercomputers and numerical algorithms, while bulk Reynolds number, Re_b, is at least hundred thousand, which is corresponds to Re_τ ? 5000, in real thermal and fluid machines in industrial application. Lead, Skin-friction drag in turbulent pipe flows significantly decreases by a pulsating due to a relaminarization phenomenon. In a straight pipe flow,63% drag reduction rate has been obtained experimentally. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the drag reduction effect by the pulsating in a turbulent pipe flow with a branch. The cycleaveraged friction Reynolds number is set to be 200 before the branch. The flow rates at a main and a sub branches are set to be equal. The range of control parameters, i.e., a period of the pulsating and an acceleration parameter, that produces the drag reduction effect, is scaled with a local skin-friction velocity and a mean pressure gradient averaged for an acceleration phase. This scaling is found to be suited not only the flow before the branch, but also that after the branch. Lead, A skin-friction drag in turbulent pipe flow significantly decreases by a pulsating due to a relaminarization. In a straight pipe flow, 63% drag reduction has been obtained experimentally. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the drag reduction effect by the pulsating in a turbulent pipe flow which has a branch. Cycle-averaged friction Reynolds number is set to be 200 before the branch. Flow rates at main and sub branches are set to be equal. Before the branch, the branch does not effect to the drag reduction effect. After the branch, the drag reduction effect is obtained when the input parameters nondimensionalized by the local friction Reynolds number and a mean pressure gradient averaged for an acceleration phase are set to be those in the pipe flow without the branch. Lead, The skin-friction drag reduction mechanism of the traveling wave-like blowing/suction control in a laminar channel flow is investigated by using an identity equation between the skin-friction drag and the Reynolds shear stress coupled with a linear analysis. The traveling wave creates non-quadrature betweeen the velocity fluctuations and induces the phase shift of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. The present phase analysis reveals that this non-quadrature consists on an inviscid base phase relationship and a near-wall phase shift induced by the viscosity. Lead, The skin-friction drag reduction effect of the traveling wave-like surface heating/cooling in the channel flow is investigated by using a linear analysis and a direct numerical simulation. The buoyancy force induced by the surface heating/cooling is expected to reduce the Reynolds shear stress in the region near the wall. The linear analysis shows that the downstream traveling wave can reduce the skin-friction drag in laminar flows. Amount of drag reduction is larger at lower Prandtl numbers. Lead, A linear analysis is made for the skin-friction drag reduction in channel flow by traveling wave-like surface heating/cooling. The analysis reveals that downstream traveling waves can reduce the skin-friction drag. The buoyancy force induced by the surface traveling wave creates the disturbance fields of velocities, pressure and temperature. Due to a subtle effect of fluid viscosity, a phase lead of streamwise velocity disturbance (u') is induced. In this study, we use an autoencoder based on convolutional neural networks to extract the features of flow fields by compressing high-dimensional flow field information into low-dimensional latent variables, and by using a sparse regression method to derive the equations that govern the time evolution of the latent variables. While this method can extract features with sufficient accuracy for unsteady flows around a cylinder, it was suggested that further reduction in dimension is necessary for turbulent flows., 18H03758

In this study, we investigate drag reduction effect of traveling wave-like control in turbulent boundary layer flows. The traveling wave-like control not only induces a relaminarization phenomenon with large skin-friction drag reduction, but also leads simultaneous achievement of the skin-friction drag reduction and the heat transfer enhancement (i.e., dissimilar control effect). It is observed on an aircraft and in a jet engine. When icing occurs in a jet engine, it leads to harmful affects like the critical degradation of aerodynamic perfomance. Although the researches have been conducted in the world, the universal icing model and simulation techniques have not been established. Therefore, they are strongly needed in the industries. In the present research, a particle/grid-based hybrid icing simulation code was newly developed. First, based on the MPS method, the universal icing model was developed and successfully verified for rime and glaze ice conditions. Second, this model was implimented in our grid-based icing simulation code, and the superiority of the code was confirmed through verifications. Finally, the developed code was applied to compressor blades in a jet engine, and it was confirmed that the code can reasonably reproduce the icing phenomenon., 16H03918

In this study, a traveling wave-like control from walls is focused. The traveling control induces a relaminarization phenomenon in wall turbulence. Although a mechanism of the relaminarization phenomenon has not yet been elucidated, previous studies showed that the spatial development of the control effect played important role. Therefore, in this study we made numerical simulations and experiments in order to clarify the spatial development effect on the relaminarization phenomenon. The numerical simulation shows that vortical structure gradually decreases in the downstream direction and the process is clearly observed. Although a similar tendency is obtained in experiments, the control effect attenuates at the downstream region since the wave amplitude decreases., 25889018
Aug. 2013 - Mar. 2015 - 進行波状制御による乱流摩擦抵抗低減に関する理論的・数値的研究

日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 慶應義塾大学, 特別研究員奨励費, Principal investigator, 流体と壁面との間に生じる摩擦抵抗の低減手法についての研究を行った.流れが乱流へ遷移した状態では,流体の非定常性及び非線形に起因して渦運動が活発になるため,摩擦抵抗が著しく増加する.この抵抗の低減手法は省エネルギの観点からも工学的に重要であるため,幅広く研究が行われている.本研究では,最も簡単な系である平行平板問乱流において,センサを用いずに大きな制御効果を得ることができると知られている壁面からの進行波状制御入力に着目した. 壁面からの吹出し吸込みを進行波状に行う制御に関しては,低レイノルズ数乱流において,従来知られていたように上流方向進行波で摩擦抵抗低減,下流方向進行波で抵抗が増加することを確認し,またこの増減に関しては線形解析でのメカニズムを拡張できることが分かった.一方で,下流方向への進行波においてパラメータによっては乱流中の乱れが減少していき,層流化することも明らかになった.この場合,制御効率は最大となった. 本制御の実用化を見据え,外力や壁面変形を用いた制御についても検証を行った.外力に関しては浮力を用いた場合では制御効果が小さく摩擦を増加させる方向に働いた一方で,ローレンツカを模擬した外力制御では低減し,そのメカニズムは吹出し吸込みの場合と同様に説明できることが分かった. また,壁面変形に関しては数値シミュレーションと実験の両方を行った.数値シミュレーションに関しては,下流方向に進行させた場合に乱れが減少していく再層流化が見られ,これは吹出し吸込みの場合と傾向が一致した.一方,実験ではゴム膜を用いて進行波を発生させることで計算と同様に抵抗の低減が見られた., 11J03928
