  • Downward terrestrial gamma-ray flash associated with collision of lightning leaders

    Science Advances, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), 11, 21, 23 May 2025, Peer-reviwed, Lightning discharges can produce transient gamma-ray emissions called terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), which originates from electrons accelerated to relativistic energies in strong electric fields. However, it is not yet understood how lightning produces an enormous number of relativistic electrons in dense atmospheres. We present that, thanks to a ground-based observation with optical, radio frequency and high-energy measurements focused on television transmission towers in Kanazawa, Japan, a TGF and a cloud-to-ground discharge of −56 kA occurred when a downward negative leader was colliding with an upward positive leader from the tower. Because the cloud-to-ground current followed the TGF by 30 μs, the TGF started when two leaders approached each other. Our results indicate that an immense number of electrons were produced and accelerated to relativistic energies in a strong and compact electric-field region between the two leaders.

    English, 2016 ASIA-PACIFIC SIGNAL AND INFORMATION PROCESSING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL SUMMIT AND CONFERENCE (APSIPA), IEEE, This paper proposes a compressive sensing method for the phased array weather radar (PAWR), which is capable of three-dimensional observation with high spatial resolution in 30 seconds. Because of the large amount of observation data, which is more than 1 gigabyte per minute, data compression is an essential technology to operate PAWR in the real world. Even though many conventional studies applied compressive sensing (CS) to weather radar measurements, their reconstruction quality should be further improved. To this end, we define a new cost function that expresses prior knowledge about weather radar measurements, i.e., local similarities. Since the cost function is convex, we can derive an efficient algorithm based on the so-called convex optimization techniques, in particular simultaneous direction method of multipliers (SDMM). Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods for real observation data with improvement of 4% in the normalized error.

    English, 2014 XXXITH URSI GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM (URSI GASS), IEEE, A new Phased Array Radar (PAR) system for meteorological application has been developed by Toshiba Corporation and Osaka University under a grant of NICT, and installed in Osaka University, Japan in 2012. The phased array radar system developed has the unique capability of scanning the whole sky with 100m and 10 to 30 second resolution up to 60 km. The system adopts the digital beam forming technique for elevation scanning and mechanically rotates the array antenna in azimuth direction within 10 to 30 seconds. The radar transmits a broad beam of several degrees with 24 antenna elements and receives the back scattered signal with 128 elements digitizing at each elements. Then by digitally forming the beam in the signal processor, the fast scanning is realized. After the installation of the PAR system in Osaka University, the initial observation campaign was conducted in Osaka urban area with Ku-band Broad Band Radar (BBR) network, C-band weather radar, and lightning location system. The initial comparison with C band radar system shows that the developed PAR system can observe the behavior of the thunderstorm structure in much more detail than any other radar system. The observed high temporal resolution images of the severe thunderstorm are introduced, showing the potential capabilities of the PAR system. The correlation coefficient of the reflectivity in PAR with C band radar ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 as a function of the distance from the PAR.

  • Global Lightning and Sprite Measurements from International Space Station

    English, 2014 XXXITH URSI GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND SCIENTIFIC SYMPOSIUM (URSI GASS), IEEE, The Global Lightning and sprIte MeasurementS (GLIMS) on the International Space Station (ISS) is a mission to detect and locate optical transient luminous events (TLEs) and its associated lightning simultaneously from the non-sun synchronous orbit, and is scheduled to be launch from Japan in January, 2012 as part of the multi-mission consolidated equipment on Japanese Exposure Module (JEM). Our mission goals are (1) to detect and locate lightning and sprite within storm scale resolution over a large region of the Earth's surface along the orbital track of the ISS without any bias, (2) to clarify the generation mechanism of sprite, and (3) to identify the occurrence conditions of TLEs. To achieve these goals, two CMOS cameras, six Photometers, VLF receiver, and VHF interferometer with two antennas, are installed at the bottom of the module to observe the TLEs as well as causative lighting discharges at nadir direction during day and night time. Though the luminous events so-called sprite, elves and jets have been investigated by numerous researchers all over the world based mainly on the ground observations, some important problems have not been fully understood yet such as generation mechanisms of columniform fine structure and horizontal offset of some sprites from the parent lightning discharges. In the JEM-GLIMS mission, observations from our synchronized sensors are going to shed light on above-mentioned unsolved problems regarding TLEs as well as causative lighting discharges. In this presentation, the scientific background, instrumentation, project summaries and initial observation results are given.

  • VHF radio observations of lightning discharges on JEM-GLIMS

    English, 2014 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, TOKYO (EMC'14/TOKYO), IEEE, Since 2012, the global lightning and sprite measurements (GLIMS) mission has been conducted on the exposed facility of Japanese experiment module (JEM-EF) of the international space station (ISS). In this mission, the VHF broadband digital interferometer (VITF) attached on JEM-EF is designed to estimate the direction of arrival of electromagnetic waves. The VITF has the bandwidth from 70 MHz to 100 MHz. The electromagnetic radiations from lightning discharges received by two antennas are digitized by the 2-channel AD converter. We introduce the outline of the mission and the VITF. The initial observational results with the VITF of the GLIMS mission are presented. The comparison of the results of arrival direction estimation of the VITF with optical observations using two methods which are an interferometry technic and the group delay characteristic of EM waves. The results agree with the position of the lightning emission captured by the LSI.

    日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 大阪大学, 特別研究員奨励費, 当該年度に実施した研究の成果として以下の点を挙げる. 1.衛星搭載用VHF波帯広帯域ディジタル干渉計の研究・開発 2009年に既に運用を行った,衛星搭載用VHF波帯広帯域ディジタル干渉計を実現する基礎実証衛星「まいど1号」による観測結果を用いて、電離層内を広帯域電磁波が伝搬する際に生じる群遅延特性を用いた新たな到来方向推定手法の提案を行い、その結果を地上雷観測網性能評価等(World Wide Lightning Location Network)の観測データをもちいて評価した結果を論文としてまとめて投稿、採録された(IEICE TRANSACTIONS)。また,その結果に関して,発表を行った(平成24年基礎・材料・共通部門大会・電気学会). 2.電磁波到来方向の補正演算アルゴリズム 宇宙空間からVHF波帯電磁波放射源の到来方向を求めるために,電離層内の屈折を考慮した補正演算が必要である。具体的には,各高度に国際標準電離層モデルを用いた電子密度,衝突周波数,地球磁場を考慮した電離層モデルを作成し,高精度かつ計算コストが低い到来方向の補正演算アルゴリズムの開発を行う.このうち該当年度は,本モデルを用いた電離圏が到来方向推定に及ぼす影響を評価した.その結果,VHF帯を用いた雷放電電磁波到来方向推定手法は夜間の電離圏ではその影響はほぼ無視できることを明らかにし,昼間の電離圏は,電離層内の伝搬距離によって数十kmの補正が必要であることを示した。この結果を論文としてまとめ,電気学会A部門に投稿し、採録された(菊池等,"人工衛星によるVHF帯電磁波を用いた雷放電位置推定に対する電離圏の影響評価",電気学会誌,2013年4月掲載予定) 3.JEM-GLIMS MISSION(2012)による観測データの解析 また,JEM-GLIMS MISSIONにおいて,2012年11月から宇宙ステーションからの雷放電の定常観測を行っている.初期観測データから,各機器の正常動作が確認され,観測データの評価を行っている.初期観測結果について各学会にて発表を行った(第87回・第88回日本大気電気学会,AGU)., 11J00834
