  • Power Reduction of OLED Displays by Tone Mapping Based on Helmholtz-Kohlrausch Effect

    The Helmholtz-Kohlraush effect is a visual characteristic that humans perceive color having higher saturation as brighter. In the proposed method, the pixel value is reduced by increasing the saturation while maintaining the hue and value of HSV color space, resulting in power saving of OLED displays since the power consumption of OLED displays directly depends on the pixel value. Although the luminance decreases, brightness of image is maintained by the Helmholtz-Kohlraush effect. In order to suppress excessive increase of saturation, the increase factor of saturation is reduced with an increase in brightness. As maximum increase factor of saturation, kMAX, increases, more power is reduced but unpleasant color change takes place. From the subjective evaluation experiment with the 23 test images consisting of skin, natural and non-natural images, it is found that kMAX is less than 2.0 to suppress the unpleasant color change. When kMAX is 2.0, the power saving is 8.0%. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is confirmed by using a smart phone having 4.5 inches diagonal RGB AMOLED display.

    This paper proposes an address power reduction method for plasma display panels (PDPs) using subfield data smoothing based on a visual masking effect. High-resolution, high-frame-rate PDPs have large address power loss caused by parasitic capacitance. Although the address power is reduced by smoothing the subfield data, noise is generated. The proposed method reduces the address power while maintaining the image quality by choosing the smoothing area of the address data based on the visual masking effect. The results of subjective assessment for the images based on smoothed address data indicate that image quality is maintained.

  • ディスプレイにおいて縞状またはすじ状に生じる画質劣化の許容限界と画質劣化視認性の評価方法

    映像情報メディア学会誌, 映像情報メディア学会, 68, 8, J371-J375, Aug. 2014, Peer-reviwed, 液晶ディスプレイや有機ELディスプレイでは,縞状やすじ状の画質劣化が生じる場合がある.本研究ではそれらの画質劣化を想定し,様々なコントラスト,空間周波数とした正弦波的に輝度変化をする画像を用いて視認評価実験を行い,画質劣化視認性の空間周波数およびコントラスト依存性を調べた.その結果から,観視者が画質劣化を検知できない視認限界および画質劣化を検知するが気にならない許容限界の近似直線を求めた.縞状またはすじ状に生じる画質劣化の空間周波数およびコントラストを測定もしくは予想し,近似直線と比較することで,その劣化の視認性を評価することができる.

  • 2周波数・2電圧サステインパルスによるPDPの発光効率向上

    電子情報通信学会論文誌C, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, J97C, 3, 118-123, Mar. 2014, Peer-reviwed, 一般的なサステイン放電を100%持続するのに必要な壁電荷蓄積を行う高電圧・低周波(250kHz)のSustain-1パルス間に高効率な低電流放電を起こす低電圧・高周波(750kHzのSustain-2パルスを印加するサステイン駆動方式を考案した.これにより,高Xe分圧条件下においても従来の高周波駆動より低い電圧で放電を維持することができる.Sustain-1パルス間に挿入するSustain-2パルス数は,各Xe分圧におけるプライミング効果を考慮して設定する.50%Xeで提案方式を適用した結果,従来に比べ60%程度の効率向上となった.Sustain-2パルス一つあたりの放電電流量は減少するが,Sustain-2パルスを複数回印加することで従来駆動と同程度の輝度が得られる.

In the proposed scheme, wall charges are accumulated in all the cells in advance, and then the address discharges take place in selected cells to eliminate the wall charges. Sustain discharges are generated in these cells. In order to realize the proposed address scheme, re-designing of a setup waveforms was necessary. The data pulse of 1.33μs wide and 84V was realized in a Ne+10%Xe PDP. A contrast of 3,600:1 was obtained by providing one setup period in a TV field.

However its efficacy is lower. In this paper, improvement of efficacy was attempted. First, the electrode width was reduced from 1.0mm to 0.5mm in order to widen the operating pressure margins. This enabled the Xe partial pressure to be increased from 1.2 kPa to 3.0 kPa, which increased efficacy 60%. Then a MgO, which has a high secondary electron emission coefficient, was coated on the dielectric layer, improving efficacy a further 10%. As a results, an efficacy of 35 lm/W with a luminance 10,100 cd/m2 were obtained with a 2.8-inch diagonal lamp.

    映像情報メディア学会誌, The Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers, 57, 8, 977-982, Aug. 2003, Peer-reviwed, Various motional artifacts appear on PDP images Also a gray scale capability at low luminance levels is not satisfactory These problems can be overcome by increasing the number of sub-fields and the field frequency This paper introduces a driving method with which 900cd/m2 luminance and 600 : 1 dark room contrast were achieved by applying only one reset pulse per TV field An expression of 54 randomly addressable subfields on an AC-PDP was made possible by adopting a 3-phase sustain pulse technique combined with an Address-While-Display drive scheme The technique provided a sixfold increase in field frequency to 360Hz compared to the conventional frequency of 60Hz It was proven by using a 42″ PDP that blurring of moving images was reduced significantly.

    電子情報通信学会論文誌, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, J85-C, 9, 838-845, Sep. 2002, Peer-reviwed, ACPDPにおいて,空間電荷によるプライミング効果と消去アドレスにより生成した壁電荷とを用いることで,低電圧アドレスと高速アドレスの両立を実現した.プライミングパルスと走査パルスの間隔を,1μs,走査パルスとデータパルスの幅を0.33μsとしたとき,アドレス電圧の最低値は75Vに低減された.更に,VGAパネルにおいて208サブフィールド表示を可能とする駆動方式を開発した.これにより高画質で低コストなプラズマディスプレイが実現可能となった.

  • Mercury-Free Xe Flat Discharge Lamps for Lighting

The lamps have a simple structure with insulated electrodes and operated with an ac pulse voltage. By adopting 1mm-wide electrodes, gas pressures of 10kPa or higher, and 50% duty pulse voltage drive, high luminance and high efficacy were achieved. Two types of mercury free Xe flat fluorescent lamps, a single discharge type and a multiple discharge type, were introduced. Luminance of 11, 000cd/m^2, luminous flux of 860 lm, and efficacy of 30 lm/W were attained with the 444mm×27mm single discharge type lamp. Luminous flux is sufficient for lighting, although the efficacy is half that of the commercially abailable Hg fluorescent lamp. A proto-type of a table lamp that utilized a 175mm×110mm multiple discharge type was also made. Luminous flux and efficacy were 850 lm and 21 lm/W, respectively. lluminance at the position 38cm under the lamp was 1, 700 lx, which is higher than that of a commercially available table lamp.

  • A Study on a Priming Effect in AC-PDPs and Its Application to Low Voltage and High Speed Addressing

    IEICE Trans. on Electronics, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, 84C, 11, 1673-1678, Nov. 2001, Peer-reviwed, A priming effect is studied for a three-electrode, surface-discharge AC-PDP, which has stripe barrier ribs of 0.22mm pitch. It was found that by keeping the interval between the reset and address pulses within 24μs, the data pulse voltage can be reduced while the data pulse width can be narrowed due to the priming effect. By adopting the primed addressing technique to the PDP, the data pulse voltage was reduced to 20V when the data and scan pulse widths were 1μs. Alternatively, the data pulse width could be narrowed to 0.33μs when the data pulse voltage was 56V. 69% of the TV field time could be assigned for the display periods with 12 sub-fields, assuring high luminance display.

    電子情報通信学会論文誌C, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, J83-C, 4, 326-333, Apr. 2000, Peer-reviwed, カーナビゲーションシステムに用いられる対角4〜7インチの液晶ディスプレイは, 様々な環境下で使用されるため, バックライトに対しても10000cd/m^2以上の高輝度や-30〜80℃の動作温度範囲といった厳しい条件が要求されている.この条件を満たすために, 温度依存症の強い水銀の代わりに希ガスを使用した, 構造が簡単で, 高輝度, 高効率, 高均斉度が得られる平面放電ランプを開発した.駆動電圧パルスのパルス幅を狭くして電流量を制限することで, 放電空間全体に広がる均一な発光を得ることができる.最大輝度9200cd/m^2を得, この際, 発光効率は20.4lm/Wであった.また輝度1080cd/m^2のとき最大発光効率34.1lm/Wを得た.

First, amounts of light intensity perceived by the retina are calculated. Then the pixels to which to add the equalizing pulses are determined by checking whether the disturbance is dark or bright. Also appropriate sub-fieids of each pixels are chosen for emission compensation. Finally, a feed-back loop is provided for a fine adjustment of luminance. The technique is applicable to any sub-field configuration.
