Sensors (Switzerland), MDPI AG, 18, 1, s18010026, 01 Jan. 2018, Peer-reviwed, The pressure-and temperature-sensitive paint (PSP/TSP) technique, for steady-state and unsteady-state measurements, is becoming widespread. However, unsteady quantitative measurement is still difficult because non-uniform distribution of the probes over a test model may cause errors in the results. We focus on the dipping method that applies two luminophores into a binding material to improve sensitivity uniformity over a model surface. A bullet-shaped axisymmetric test model with motion-capturing TSP was used to evaluate the sensitivity uniformity, and three dipping methods (static, convectional, and rotational) were examined. The average peak ratios in the longitudinal direction were 1.17-1.46 for static, 1.38-1.51 for convectional, and 1.42-1.45 for rotational dipping. The standard deviations in the transverse direction were the smallest for rotational (0.022-0.033), relative to static (0.086-0.104), and convectional (0.044-0.065) dipping.

日本機械学会論文集, 日本機械学会, 80, 814, 1-10, 21 Jun. 2014, Peer-reviwed, We investigate estimation methods of aerodynamic coefficients for a ball in sports by using characteristic quantities of its trajectory. One method is based on the quantities representing the whole shape of trajectory while the other utilizes local quantities such as curvature and/or torsion. In the former, the flight distance and the maximum height are measured, and the motion equation predicts numerical values of these quantities with measured initial conditions and preset aerodynamic coefficients. Then the optimal combination of the aerodynamic coefficients is determined by minimizing the error between the measured and estimated values of the characteristic quantities. This method is applied to estimate drag and lift coefficients of a soccer ball in back-spinning, and the result shows that the averaged values of CD and CL are 0.205 and 0.237, respectively. In the latter method, the expressions between the aerodynamic coefficients and the geometrical quantities of trajectory are derived, which suggests that the piecewise quadratic interpolation on a trajectory provides the aerodynamic coefficients. This method enables to locally estimate the coefficients, and therefore clarifies the variation of the coefficients along a trajectory. Measured data for a table tennis ball is analyzed with the method and we obtain successfully the drag and lift coefficients in flight condition. The results indicate the qualitative difference of spinning effect in drag and lift coefficients.

Sports Engineering, 16, 1, 43-54, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Two support-interference-free measurements of aerodynamic forces exerted on an archery arrow (A/C/E
Easton Technical Products) are described. The first measurement is conducted in a wind tunnel with JAXA's 60 cm Magnetic Suspension and Balance System, in which an arrow is suspended and balanced by magnetic force against gravity. The maximum wind velocity is 45 m/s, which is less than a typical velocity of an arrow (about 60 m/s) shot by an archer. The boundary layer of the arrow remains laminar in the measured Re number range (4.0 × 103 <
Re <
1.5 × 104), and the drag coefficient is about 1.5 for Re >
1.0 × 104. The second measurement is performed by a free flight experiment. Using two high-speed video cameras, we record the trajectory of an archery arrow and analyze its velocity decay rate, from which the drag coefficient is determined. In order to investigate Re number dependence of the drag coefficient in a wider range (9.0 × 103 <
Re <
2.4 × 104), we have developed an arrow-shooting system using compressed air as a power source, which launches the A/C/E arrow at an arbitrary velocity up to 75 m/s. We attach two points (piles) of different type (streamlined and bullet) to the arrow-nose. The boundary layer is laminar for both points for Re less than about 1.2 × 104. It becomes turbulent for Re larger than 1.2 × 104 and the drag coefficient increases to about 2. 6, when the bullet point is attached. In the same Re range, two values of drag coefficient are found for the streamlined point, of which the lower value is about 1.6 (laminar boundary layer) and the larger value is about 2. 6 (turbulent boundary layer), confirming that the point-shape has a crucial influence on the laminar to turbulent transition of the boundary layer. © 2012 International Sports Engineering Association.

JOURNAL OF LUMINESCENCE, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 132, 2, 256-260, Feb. 2012, Peer-reviwed, A temperature-cancellation method of pressure-sensitive paint is introduced. It uses an intermediate wavelength of two luminescent peaks, which are opposite in the temperature dependency. 1-Pyrenesulfonic acid is used as a luminophore to describe this method, which is applied onto a porous anodic alumina using the dipping deposition. The concentration of the luminophore solution is varied from 0.001 to 0.09 mM. It controlled the luminescent peak ratio, temperature cancelled wavelength, and pressure sensitivity. The cancellation wavelength is ranged from 429 +/- 13 to 493 +/- 23 nm. An optical band-pass filter with the temperature cancellation can be also provided by controlling the concentration. GEOPHYSICAL AND ASTROPHYSICAL FLUID DYNAMICS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 105, 4-5, 392-408, 2011, Peer-reviwed, The influence of external flow field on the statistical equilibrium state of quasi-geostrophic point vortices (vortex cloud) is investigated numerically. The numerical computations are performed using the fast special-purpose computer for molecular dynamics simulations, MDGRAPE-3. The equilibrium state in otherwise quiescent fluid is axisymmetric, whose radial distribution depends on both the vertical distribution of vortices P(z) and the total energy of the vortex system E. At a certain critical energy value E(c), the number of microscopic state with a given angular momentum attains its maximum (zero-inverse temperature state), where the radial distribution is Gaussian at any vertical height. When the energy is smaller (E < E(c): positive temperature), the radial distribution becomes flatter than the Gaussian. In contrast, if the energy is higher (E > E(c): negative temperature), the radial distribution becomes sharper showing tighter concentration near the axis of symmetry. If an equilibrium vortex cloud of positive temperature is immersed in the horizontal strain field U(e) = ey, V(e) = ex, the vortex distribution is stretched in the gamma-direction, and the azimuthally averaged radial distribution becomes Gaussian-like. Similarly, when the equilibrium state of positive temperature is immersed in the vertical shear field U(tau) = tau z, V(tau) = 0, the vortex cloud is tilted in the gamma-direction, and the radial distribution becomes Gaussian-like. These findings explain how the internal vorticity distributions inside interacting vortex clouds of positive temperature change to be nearly zero-inverse temperature state.

We determined the drag- and lift- coefficients (C_D,C_ ) by analyzing the video images. The measurements were performed in the range of 0.6×10^5 on the parameters Re and SP is investigated in detail. Negative Magnus force is exerted on a back-spinning sphere in a relatively wide Re-SP parameter range, whereas only usual Magnus force works on a back-spinning hard baseball. The influence of seam patterns on the aerodynamical properties is discussed.

ながれ(日本流体力学会誌), Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, 27, 1, 51-63, Feb. 2008, Peer-reviwed, In geophysical flows, coherent vortex structures persist and their interactions dominate the scalar transport as well as the dynamics of turbulence. Meacham (1992) and Meacham et al.(1994) obtained exact unsteady solutions of the quasi-geostrophic equation, which represent an ellipsoidal vortex patch of uniform potential vorticity. In this paper, we investigate the scalar transport around the ellipsoidal vortex patch, both theoretically (based on the Melnikov analysis) and numerically. An inclined spheroidal vortex rotates steadily around the vertical axis, and any fluid particle moves along a closed trajectory in the coordinates rotating with the spheroidal vortex. There are heteroclinic orbits in the plane of symmetry and homoclinic orbits in other horizontal planes. We can observe chaotic mixing in the vicinity of these orbits, if the spheroid is deformed slightly.

JOURNAL OF FLUID MECHANICS, CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 402, 349-378, Jan. 2000, Peer-reviwed, The structure of initially isotropic homogeneous turbulence interacting with a columnar vortex (with circulation Gamma and radius sigma), idealized both as a solid cylinder and a hollow core model is analysed using the inhomogeneous form of linear rapid distortion theory (RDT), for flows where the r.m.s. turbulence velocity u(0) is small compared with Gamma/sigma. The turbulent eddies with scale L are distorted by the mean velocity gradient and also, over a distance L from the surface of the vortex, by their direct impingement onto it, whether it is solid or hollow. The distortion of the azimuthal component of turbulent vorticity by the differential rotation in the mean flow around the columnar vortex causes the mean-square radial velocity away from the cylinder to increase as (Gamma t/2 pi r(2))(2)(L-x/r)u(0)(2), when (r - sigma) > L-x, but on the surface of the vortices ((r - sigma) < L-x) where (u(r)(2)) is reduced, (u(z)(2)) increases to the same order, while the other components do not grow. Statistically, while the vorticity field remains asymmetric, the velocity field of small-scale eddies near the vortex core rapidly becomes axisymmetric, within a period of two or three revolutions of the columnar vortex. Calculation of the distortion of small-scale initially random velocity fields shows how the turbulent eddies, as they are wrapped around the columnar vortex, become like vortex rings, with similar properties to those computed by Melander & Hussain (1993) using a fully nonlinear direct numerical simulation. A mechanism is proposed for how interactions between the external turbulence and the columnar vortex can lead to non-axisymmetric vortex waves being excited on the vortex and damped fluctuations in its interior. If the columnar vortex is not significantly distorted by these linear effects, estimates are made of how nonlinear effects lead to the formation of axisymmetric turbulent vortices which move as result of their image vorticity (in addition to the self-induction velocity) at a velocity of order u(0)t Gamma/sigma(2) parallel to the vortex. Even when the circulation (gamma) of the turbulent vortices is a small fraction of Gamma, they can excite self-destructive displacements through resonance on a time scale sigma/u(0).

PHYSICS OF FLUIDS, AMER INST PHYSICS, 10, 12, 3168-3177, Dec. 1998, Peer-reviwed, Standing and propagating plane waves in a rigidly rotating stably stratified fluid are considered. Based on a WKB analysis, it is shown numerically that almost all of them are unstable with respect to three-dimensional short-wavelength perturbations. The waves whose wavenumber vector is parallel to the axis of rotation and stratification are stabilized as the Brunt-Vaisala frequency N (normalized by the angular velocity of rigid rotation) increases, whereas the inclined waves are unstable at any N. These instabilities are caused by parametric resonances of low order (first and second) and the instability growth rate is determined theoretically, when the wave amplitude is small,(C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. FLUID DYNAMICS RESEARCH, ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 21, 5, 359-380, Nov. 1997, The linear instability of a steady elliptical vortex in a stably stratified rotating fluid is investigated, using the quasi-geostrophic, f-plane approximation. The vortex is embedded in a uniform background straining field e with uniform vorticity 2 gamma (the Moore-Saffman vortices). An elliptical vortex in an irrotational strain field (gamma = 0) is shown to be unstable to long wave quasi-three-dimensional disturbances of azimuthal wavenumber m = 1 (bending wave). The long wave instability has a two-dimensional origin. An elliptical vortex in a simple shear, whose major axis is parallel to the shear streamlines (e = gamma), is stable against any disturbance. In contrast, an ellipse in a simple shear, whose major axis is perpendicular to the shear streamlines (e = -gamma), is unstable to quasi-three-dimensional bending modes irrespective of a/b. Short wave quasi-three-dimensional disturbances grow faster than two-dimensional instability modes in the parameter range -0.5 < gamma < 0. The origin of short wave instability is attributed to resonance between inertial waves and the imposed strain field e.

JOURNAL OF FLUID MECHANICS, CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 261, 253-271, Feb. 1994, Peer-reviwed, The linear instability of Kirchhoff's elliptic vortex in a vertically stratified rotating fluid is investigated using the quasi-geostrophic, f-plane approximation. Any elliptic vortex is shown to be unstable to baroclinic disturbances of azimuthal wavenumber m = 1 (bending mode) and m = 2 (elliptical deformation). The axial wavenumber of the unstable bending mode approaches lambda(c) = 1.7046 in the limit of small ellipticity, indicating that it is a short-wave baroclinic instability. The instability occurs when the bending wave rotates around the vortex axis with angular velocity identical to the rotation rate of the undisturbed elliptic vortex. On the other hand, the wavenumber of the elliptical deformation mode approaches zero in the same limit, showing that it is a long-wave sideband instability.

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 222, 369-416, 1991, Peer-reviwed, Three-dimensional motion of a thin vortex filament with axial velocity, embedded in an inviscid incompressible fluid, is investigated. The deflections of the core centreline are not restricted to be small compared with the core radius. We first derive the equation of the vortex motion, correct to the second order in the ratio of the core radius to that of curvature, by a matching procedure, which recovers the results obtained by Moore &
Saffman (1972). An asymptotic formula for the linear dispersion relation is obtained up to the second order. Under the assumption of localized induction, the equation governing the self-induced motion of the vortex is reduced to a nonlinear evolution equation generalizing the localized induction equation. This new equation is equivalent to the Hirota equation which is integrable, including both the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the modified KdV equation in certain limits. Therefore the new equation is also integrable and the soliton surface approach gives the N-soliton solution, which is identical to that of the localized induction equation if the pertinent dispersion relation is used. Among other exact solutions are a circular helix and a plane curve of Euler's elastica. This local model predicts that, owing to the existence of the axial flow, a certain class of helicoidal vortices become neutrally stable to any small perturbations. The non-local influence of the entire perturbed filament on the linear stability of a helicoidal vortex is explored with the help of the cutoff method valid to the second order, which extends the first-order scheme developed by Widnall (1972). The axial velocity is found to discriminate between right and left-handed helices and the long-wave instability mode is found to disappear in a certain parameter range when the successive turns of the helix are not too close together. Comparison of the cutoff model with the local model reveals that the non-local induction and the core structure are crucial in making quantitative predictions. © 1991, Cambridge University Press. 化学工学論文集, The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, 16, 4, 739-746, 1990, Peer-reviwed, Temperature and thermal creep flow fields around a spherical particle drifting in a gas with a linear temperature gradient near a plate are analyzed by taking account of the temperature jump and frictional velocity slip. Calculated values of the thermophoretic force at various distances from the plate are shown aganst Knudsen numbers in the slip-continuum region. In comparison with Brock's formula for a particle in an infinite expance of gas, effects of the plate on the isotherms, flow patterns, and thermophoretic force are clarified. The force is increased by the temperature jump and is reduced by the velocity slip. The creep flow is subject to positive or negative effects of the plate depending on the thermal conductivity of the particle. The thermophoretic force increses gradually as the particle approaches the plate, being followed by a sharper increase when closer to the plate, whereas the drifting velocity decreases owing to the frictional force increasing much faster than the thermophoretic force.

When the Prandtl number is unity, the diffusion equation with convective term is reduced to a simple diffusion equation by a generalized Cole-Hopf transformation. An exact solution of an initial value problem is obtained in a closed form. When the Prandtl number is arbitrary, a similar analytical treatment is possible for limited classes of Burgers' flow (expansion wave and single shock). The statistics of scalar field are discussed briefly. © 1987.
