  • A Study on Frequency Dispersion of Transmission Characteristics of Shielded-Flexible Printed Circuits
    Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
2017 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTRONICS PACKAGING (ICEP), IEEE, 272-277, 2017, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, a frequency dispersion of transmission characteristics of shielded-flexible printed circuits (FPC) for differential-signaling is studied experimentally and numerical modeling. Firstly, differential-mode impedance, the mixed-mode scattering parameters and eye-diagram are discussed. Secondly, frequency dispersion of transmission characteristics is discussed by using RLGC equivalent-circuit model. The insufficient shielding performance for near magnetic field increases both the inductance and resistance. As the frequency becomes lower, DM impedance increases and propagation velocity decreases. Consequently, the frequency response has relatively large frequency dispersion.

  • Embedded F-SIR Type Transmission Line with Open-Stub for Negative Group Delay Characteristic
    Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E99C, 9, 1023-1026, Sep. 2016, Peer-reviwed, Negative group delay characteristics can be used to improve signal-integrity performance such as equalizer for compensation of the group delay of transmission line (TL). This brief-paper newly attempts to propose a concept of the embedded Folded-Stepped Impedance Resonator (F-SIR) structure with open-stub resonator, for negative group delay and slope characteristics at high-frequency as well as low-insertion loss. The concept of the proposed TL is based on the combination of resonance and anti-resonance due to open-stub resonator in order to establish wideband negative group delay and negative slope characteristics. The proposed TL is fabricated on PCB, and then the concept is validated by measurement and simulation.

  • Transmission Characteristics and Shielding Effectiveness of Shielded-Flexible Printed Circuits for Differential-Signaling
    Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E99C, 7, 766-773, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, To provide basic considerations for the realization of method for suppressing the EMI from differential-paired lines on flexible printed circuits (FPC), the characteristics of the SI performance and shielding effectiveness (SE) of shielded-flexible printed circuits for differential signaling are investigated in this paper experimentally and by a numerical modeling. Firstly, transmission characteristics of TDR measurement and frequency response of broken vertical bar S (dd21)broken vertical bar are discussed, from view point of signal integrity. Secondly, as the characteristics of the SE performance for EMI, frequency responses of magnetic field are investigated. Although placement of conductive shield near the paired-lines decreases characteristics impedance, for the broken vertical bar S (dd21)broken vertical bar "with Cu 5.5 mu m-thickness copper shield" is not deteriorated compared with "without shield" and sufficient SE performance for magnetic field can be established. But, thin-shield deteriorates SI as well as SE performances. The frequency response of broken vertical bar S (dd21)broken vertical bar at higher frequencies for the "Ag 0.1 mu m" case has the steep loss roll off. A reflection loss resulted from impedance-mismatching is not dominant factor of the losses. The dominant factor may be magnetic field leakage due to very thin -conductive shield.

  • Negative Group Delay Characteristics of Embedded Transmission Line with half-wavelength type F-SIR Structure
    Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
2016 International Conference on Electronics Packaging (ICEP), IEEE, 19-22, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Negative group delay is one of the anomalous characteristics of the metamaterial, and can be used to compensate the group delay of systems and is applicable to signal processing devices. In this paper, to achieve negative group delay with not only wide-band characteristics but also low-insertion loss, we newly propose the embedded transmission line with half-wavelength type folded-stepped impedance resonator (F-SIR) structure which has the symmetrical electric-wall at the guide center driven by differential-mode. The characteristics are discussed with numerical simulation. The concept of the proposed TL is based on the combination of resonance and anti-resonance due to open-stub resonator and F-SIR. The negative group delay and slope characteristics are achieved around anti-resonance. The insertion loss is dramatically improved compared with our previous results, which is constructed by gap and F-SIR structure. This study is a successful report that the validity of the proposed embedded TL structure is demonstrated.

  • Experimental Study on Voltage Fluctuation at Arc Blowing with External DC Magnetic Field
    Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
28TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTRIC CONTACTS (ICEC2016), HERIOT-WATT UNIV, 351-354, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Parameters on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), as well as lifetime and reliability, are important properties for electrical contacts. This paper newly attempts to clarify the mechanism of the generation of high frequency EM noise caused by breaking contact according the arc discharge, and the effect of the external DC magnetic field on the EM noise as well as arcing phenomena under high-speed separation, which allows to study possible means for developing the long lifetime and low noise electrical contact. Firstly, preliminary experiments under the conditions: open-voltage 30V and closed-current 3.6A, and DC magnetic field 0mT to 52mT, which correspond to our previous studies, were carried out. Breaking waveforms, frequency spectrum and time-frequency domain characteristic of voltage fluctuation are studied by comparison with and without external magnetic field. It was demonstrated that although applying external magnetic field is effective in reduction of duration of gaseous phase in arc (9%), higher variation of contact voltage in the gaseous phase above several hundred Megahertz is caused by external magnetic field. More importantly, the applied DC magnetic field under high-speed separation does not work to suppress the arc-duration well. These results are basic and useful finding and consideration to clarify not only the contact-breaking phenomena but also the design methodology of electrical contact from view point of EMC.

  • Suppression of Mode-Conversion by DNG Material for Differential-Paired Lines with Bend Discontinuities
    Y. Kayano; H. Inoue
Trans. JIEP, JIEP, 8, 1, 111-117, Dec. 2015, Peer-reviwed, This paper newly attempts to propose a method for compensating the mode-conversion by double negative (DNG) material for suppression of imbalance (common-mode) component and EMI generated by differential-paired lines with bend discontinuities, without the deterioration of the SI performance. The concept is based on compensation of phase-difference due to the bend discontinuities, by using DNG material with phase-constant β = 0 at a certain frequency. When the DNG material is located on discontinuity region asymmetrically, it was evaluated that CM component and the simulated |Scd21|, which is defined as the conversion from differential-mode (DM) to CM, can be compensated. The significant suppression effectiveness of |Scd21| in the case study is achieved by 13 dB around target frequency (100 MHz) using DNG material. Although DNG characteristics has not been established by real transmission line structure, the results validate the proof of concept and that proposed method should be one of the potential candidates of a basic method for suppressing mode-conversion due to phase-difference.

Secondly, as the characteristics of the SE performance for EMI, frequency responses of magnetic field are investigated. Although placement of conductive shield near the paired-lines decreases characteristics impedance, Sdd21 for the 'with Cu 5.5um-thickness copper shield' is not deteriorated compared with 'without shield' and sufficient SE performance for magnetic fields can be established. RADIO SCIENCE, AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 50, 2, 111-121, Feb. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Multichannel differential signaling scheme is one of the key technologies for modern electronics systems. For actual system, the ideal balance or symmetrical topology cannot be established, and hence, an imbalance component is excited. To provide the basic considerations for electromagnetic (EM) radiation from practical asymmetrical differential-paired lines structure with equi-distance routing, in which the same-length paired lines are used in high-speed board/LSI layout design, in this paper we newly attempt to clarify the characteristics and to identify dominant imbalance and EM radiation factor from asymmetrical differential-paired lines, by a physics-based model. The frequency response of EM radiation from asymmetrical differential-paired lines can be identified using the physics-based model. The physics-based model is constructed with an equivalent circuit model to calculate current distribution, and radiation model based on Hertzian dipole antenna. It is validated by comparing the predicted results with finite difference time domain simulation. This paper reported the basic characteristics of imbalance component of differential-paired lines with asymmetrical equi-distance routing and demonstrates the dominant factor of imbalance component and EM radiation successfully.

2015 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTRONIC PACKAGING AND IMAPS ALL ASIA CONFERENCE (ICEP-IAAC), IEEE, 700-703, 2015, Peer-reviwed, This paper newly attempts to propose a method for compensating the mode-conversion by double negative (DNG) material, for establishment of SI performance and suppression of imbalance (common-mode: CM) component and EMI generated by differential-paired lines with bend discontinuities. To demonstrate the impact of the DNG material on CM component, the simulated vertical bar S-cd21 vertical bar, which is defined as the conversion from differential-mode (DM) to CM, are evaluated. The significant suppression effectiveness of vertical bar S-cd21 vertical bar in the case study is achieved around 100MHz by DNG material. The suppression effectiveness at 70MHz is 10dB. It is estimated that the proposed structure is suitable for improving the SI performance and suppressing the CM in the case study. The results validate the proof of concept. 2014 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTRONICS PACKAGING (ICEP), IEEE, 484-489, 2014, Peer-reviwed, To provide the basic considerations for EM radiation from practical asymmetrical differential-paired lines with bend routing, this paper newly attempts to propose locally shielded differential-paired lines for establishing SI performance and suppressing imbalance component and EMI generated by differential-paired lines with bend (turnoff point) discontinuities. The conductive plane is placed on discontinuity region asymmetrically. The concept of locally shielded layout is based on compensation of phase-difference due to the bend discontinuities, by using electric-coupling between signal trace and a conductive plane for the shield. The proposed method is suitable for implementing on PCB, without changing layout of the differential-paired lines. To compare the effect of the locally shielded paired-lines on CM component, the vertical bar S-cd21 vertical bar, which is defined as the conversion from DM to CM, are evaluated. The significant suppression effectiveness of broken vertical bar S-cd21 vertical bar in the case study is achieved below 1 GHz by locally shielded differential-paired lines. Consequently, the validity of the proposed locally shielded layout is demonstrated in the case study. It is demonstrated that the proposed locally shielded layout is suitable for improving the SI performance and suppressing the CM in the case study. This study has successfully reported the basic method for suppressing imbalance component of differential-paired lines with bend discontinuities.

2014 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY (EMC), IEEE, 519-524, 2014, Peer-reviwed, For differential-signaling system, the ideal balance or symmetrical topology cannot be established due to discontinuities at turnoff point (90-degree turn), so called bending, and hence, an imbalance component is excited. Therefore methodology and geometrical-structure for satisfying both SI and EMI performances are indispensable. In order to provide basic considerations for the realization of methods for compensating the imbalance component and suppressing the EM radiation from asymmetrical differential-paired lines, the imbalance component and EMI from the differential-paired lines with discontinuities at turnoff point were studied experimentally and with numerical modeling. The differential-paired lines with different layouts were prepared for the discussion as typical routing. In the method, the distance between the paired lines at turnoff point is narrow, and hence the difference of length between Line 1 and 2 is compensated. Therefore the suppression of imbalance component by compensating the difference of the length and suppression of EMI by narrower separation can be achieved. IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E96C, 9, 1110-1118, Sep. 2013, Peer-reviwed, Arc discharge at breaking electrical contact is considered as a main source of not only degradation of the electrical property but also an undesired electromagnetic (EM) noise. In order to clarify the effect of holder temperature on the bridge and arc-duration, opening-waveforms at slowly separating silver-tin dioxide contact with different holder temperature are measured and discussed experimentally in this paper. Firstly, as opening-waveforms, the contact voltage, the contact current and the movement of moving contact related to the gap length are measured simultaneously. Secondly, the relationship between temperature of the holder and duration of the arc was quantified experimentally. It was revealed that as the initial temperature of the holder becomes higher, arc-duration becomes slightly longer. More importantly, the holder temperature dependencies of percentage of each-phase (metallic and gaseous-phases) are different with different closed-current.

IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 359-364, 2013, Peer-reviwed, To provide the basic considerations for establishment of predicting the EM radiation from practical differential-paired lines, this paper attempts to quantify the correlation between imbalance components and EM radiation from asymmetrical differential-paired line with different serpentine equi-distance routing. The differential-paired lines with different layouts were prepared for the discussion as typical different and equi-distance routing. a) is a typical asymmetrical topology due to differences in bend and length, b) is symmetrical topology with equi-distance routing, and c) is asymmetrical topology with different bend routing region. Although the geometric length of each line is the same in the symmetrical equi-distance topology, the imbalance component cannot be suppressed completely. The dominant factor of generation of imbalance component of the model under study is difference of the far-end cross-talk due to the asymmetrical geometry. The compensation region with U-shape is not effective in suppressing the imbalance component. Although serpentine equi-distance routing is suitable for improvement of SI issues compared with typical layout, it is not effective in suppressing the EMI. The reason is due to the differential-paired lines routed close to the edge of the PCB. This is significant problem of design of a meander delay line for high-speed clock distribution to establish both SI and EMI performance. This study has successfully reported the basic characteristics of imbalance component of differential-paired lines with equi-distance routing and demonstrates the dominant factor of imbalance component. © 2013 IEEE.

  • A Method for Suppressing Duration and Electromagnetic Noise of Contact Breaking Arc by Applying Pressure
Kazuaki Miyanaga; Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E95C, 9, 1487-1494, Sep. 2012, Peer-reviwed, The circuit switching device by the electrical contact needs the high reliability and long lifetime. The very important factor for the high reliability, long lifetime and electromagnetic noise of the electrical contact is to suppress the duration and electromagnetic noise of arc discharge. Usually, the suppression of arc duration method is applying the external magnetic field. But, this method was not able to suppress the metallic arc duration and increased the voltage fluctuation at arc duration. Therefore, the new method for suppressing the duration and noise for electrical contact is expected. In this paper, a new method for suppressing duration and EM noise of arc discharge by applying housing pressure is proposed. To investigate the availability of proposed method, the measurement and some considerations on arc duration, voltage-fluctuation and current noise up to GHz frequency band generated by breaking contact in the applied pressure relay housing are reported. Firstly, voltage waveform and duration of the arc are measured. The effects of the pressure in the relay housing on the duration of the metallic and gaseous phase arcs are discussed. Secondary, voltage fluctuation, the spectrogram of contact voltage and current noise up to GHz frequency band are discussed. In the results, the proposed method with applying pressure makes shorter both durations of metallic and gaseous phases. The shorter duration of metallic phase is an advantage of the proposed method beyond the applying external magnetic field. As the housing pressure is increase, the voltage fluctuation and current noise becomes smalls. The proposed method can suppress the voltage fluctuation as well as arc duration. Consequently, the proposed method is on of the good solution to suppress the duration and electromagnetic noise of the arc discharge from electrical contact and result of this study indicates the basic considerations necessary to ensure good lifetime and EMC designs for electrical contacts.

The relationship between temperature of the heated holder and duration and fluctuation of the arc was investigated experimentally. It was revealed that as the initial temperature of the heated holder becomes higher, arc-duration becomes slightly longer. In addition, voltage fluctuation at the gaseous-phase decreases when the holder is heated. Consequently, the heated holder can suppress the voltage fluctuation even if its duration becomes slightly longer.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E95C, 6, 1089-1097, Jun. 2012, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a possibility of Electromagnetic (EM) analysis against cryptographic modules outside their security boundaries. The mechanism behind the information leakage is explained from the view point of Electromagnetic Compatibility: electric fluctuation released from cryptographic modules can conduct to peripheral circuits based on ground bounce, resulting in radiation. We demonstrate the consequence of the mechanism through experiments where the ISO/IEC standard block cipher AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is implemented on an FPGA board and EM radiations from power and communication cables are measured. Correlation Electromagnetic Analysis (CEMA) is conducted in order to evaluate the information leakage. The experimental results show that secret keys are revealed even though there are various disturbing factors such as voltage regulators and AC/DC converters between the target module and the measurement points. We also discuss information-suppression techniques as electrical-level countermeasures against such CEMAs.

IET Conference Publications, 2012, 605, 250-254, 2012, Peer-reviwed, In this study, we newly attempt to clarify the material dependencies of arc characteristics at slowly breaking contact changing by the Ag based different material pairs. Firstly, the contact voltage, current waveforms and arc columns are measured. Secondary, the material dependencies of the arc duration, the spread and concentration of the arc column are discussed. Finally, the arc voltage fluctuation is discussed. Experimental results show that in the cases of the (+)Ag-Ag(-) and (+)AgSnO2- (-)Ag, arc durations can be shorter. The arc duration influenced by the cathode electrode material. The voltage fluctuation larger than the supply voltage is observed in the (+)Ag-(-)Ag case. The (+)AgSnO2-(-)Ag contact pair has relatively small voltage fluctuation. The condition of dissymmetric contact pair in the case of the (+)AgSnO2-(-)Ag is one of the solution to make shorter duration and smaller voltage fluctuation of arc discharge. 2012 PROCEEDINGS OF SICE ANNUAL CONFERENCE (SICE), SOC INSTRUMENT CONTROL ENGINEERS JAPAN, 1416-1421, 2012, Peer-reviwed, An UWB RF system can be used in the area of signal processing. Phase Locked Loop (PLL) is one of the important key technologies for broadband communication and signal processing. The phase-noise of output voltage of the oscillator with PLL should be suppressed for the performance. The low phase-noise characteristics as well as the broadband and high-frequency use are very important factor for the UWB application. This study reveals basic considerations for low phase-noise PLL. In order to develop a low phase-noise PLL, we newly attempt to establish a method for designing the phase comparator with high sensitivity. A phase comparator is consisted of XOR with CMOS transistor. The W (Channel Width)/L (Channel Length) ratio related to the delay of CMOS transistor in the phase comparator was designed to improve the sensitivity. As ratio of size of each stage decreases, detection sensitivity increases. Especially, the improvement effect of the W/L ratios of the MOS transistor in 2nd and 3rd stage on detection sensitivity is significant. The proposed phase comparator is built into PLL. It is demonstrated by circuit simulation that the proposed phase comparator has a possibility for improving phase-noise of the PLL.

2012 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY (EMC), IEEE, 311-316, 2012, Peer-reviwed, Differential-signaling (DS) techniques such as low-voltage differential-signaling (LVDS) are widely used in digital electronic devices in order to establish a high-speed digital propagation with low-electromagnetic interference (EMI). For actual DS, the ideal balance or symmetrical topology cannot be established, and hence, an imbalance component is excited in practical high-density packaging systems. In this paper, we newly attempt to identify and quantify the frequency responses of the imbalance component and electromagnetic (EM) radiation when the structure and topology change from a symmetrical to an asymmetrical differential-paired lines with equi-distance routing, using a physics-based model, which is constructed with an equivalent circuit model to calculate current distribution, and radiation model based on Hertzian dipole antenna. The physics-based model is validated by comparing the predicted results with FDTD simulation. The frequency response of EM radiation from asymmetrical differential-paired lines can be identified using our proposed model. This study has successfully established a basic method to effectively predict EM radiation from practical differential-paired lines.

  • Evaluation of Imbalance Component and EM Radiation Generated by an Asymmetrical Differential-Paired Lines Structure

Trans. JIEP, JIEP, 4, 1, 6-16, Dec. 2011, Peer-reviwed, Recently, differential-signaling (DS) techniques such as low-voltage differential-signaling (LVDS) have been widely used in digital electronics devices in order to suppress electromagnetic interference (EMI). But in practical terms, a complete topologically and structurally symmetrical differential line is impossible. In this paper, we newly attempt to quantify the imbalance component and electromagnetic (EM) radiation when the structure and topology change from a symmetrical to an asymmetrical differential paired lines. Four different differential-paired lines structures are prepared for the comparison: PCB1 is a basic symmetrical structure taken as an "ideally balanced" case, PCB2 is an asymmetrical structure due to differences in bend and length, PCB3 is a symmetrical length structure with a bend region, and PCB4 is an asymmetrical topology with equi-distance and bend routing. Firstly, the differential voltages and mixed-mode scattering parameters are selected as a measure. The conversion parameter from differential-mode (balance component) to common-mode (imbalance component), Scd21, is dramatically increased by the difference of the length. Even if the differential paired lines have a bend-region, equi-distance routing can suppress Scd21. Secondly, spatial distributions of near magnetic fields are measured at certain resonant and out of resonant frequencies of Scd21. Although the differential paired lines are excited by the differential-mode, propagated magnetic field component at the end terminal of the differential paired lines at the resonant frequencies of Scd21 could be changed to the common-mode. Thirdly, the far-electric fields at 3 m are measured and calculated. Even if equi-distance routing is suitable for the improvement of signal integrity (SI) issues, it is not enough for the suppression of the far-field potential radiation. It is clear that Scd21 is one evaluator but it is not sufficient for predicting the EM radiation completely. The facts shown in this study suggest the basic characteristics of EM radiation from practical differential paired lines with asymmetrical structure and some significant problems in the design of a meander delay line for high-speed clock distribution.

RADIO SCIENCE, AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION, 46, 5, 2011RS004735, Oct. 2011, Peer-reviwed, In recent years, effective methods for predicting and suppressing electromagnetic interference over a broad band are required. In this paper, we focus on the prediction of electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a stripline structure with a ground thin wire by an equivalent circuit model. First, frequency responses of common-mode (CM) current on the printed circuit board and EM radiation are studied with finite difference time domain modeling. Secondly, an equivalent circuit model for predicting CM current is proposed. The equivalent circuit model for prediction is based on the concepts of CM antenna impedance, distributed constant circuit, and electric coupling between the power plane and the thin ground wire. Good agreement between the predicted and full-wave analysis results indicates the validity of the proposed equivalent circuit model. The frequency response of EM radiation from the stripline structure can be identified using our proposed model. In addition, the equivalent circuit model provides enough flexibility for different geometric parameters and can be used to develop physical insights and design guidelines.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E94C, 9, 1369-1374, Sep. 2011, Peer-reviwed, When contact failure occurs in a connector in a coaxial high-frequency (HF) signal transmission line, it is well known that common-mode (CM) radiation occurs on the line. We focus on contact conditions in a connector causing such CM radiation. Experiments and simulations verify that CM radiation increases as the contact resistance increases. While the CM current strongly depends on the distribution pattern of contact resistances at a low resistance, the CM current does not depend on these pattern at a high resistance. Our results indicate that it is important to maintain a symmetrical distribution of contact spots whenever the number of such spots is four or more.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E94C, 9, 1431-1434, Sep. 2011, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, to clarify the thermal effect of the bridge for long lifetime contacts, the effects of heat conductivity on bridge break at different material contact pairs were discussed experimentally. To examine the relationship between the bridge and material, the electrode materials of the anode and the cathode were chosen as the same and the different material pairs in this experiment. Ag, AgPd60 and Pd were chosen as the electrode materials, because Ag, AgPd60 and Pd had the different thermal diffusivity. Firstly, the voltage waveforms in the bridge with different material pair were compared to the voltage waveform with the same material pair case. Secondary, the effects of heat conductivity on the break of bridge were discussed. In the results, the bridge voltage waveform depends on the electrode material at anode side. The length of the bridge at bridge break depends on the heat conductivity of the electrode material at anode side. This study provides the basic considerations on the thermal condition of the bridge break.

In this paper, we newly focus on identifying the frequency response of EM radiation from a strip line structure driven by a connected feed cable. To provide basic considerations for the realization of methods for predicting the EM radiation from strip line structure driven by a feed cable, the characteristics of the EMI of test model PCB are investigated in this paper experimentally and by numerical modeling. Firstly, frequency responses of common-mode (CM) current and EM radiation from a PCB without the feed cable are discussed by FDTD modeling. It was demonstrated that SL and shield structures without a feed cable are effective in suppressing the EMI. Secondly, CM current on the feed cable attached to the PCB is studied experimentally and compared with FDTD modeling. Due to the additional displacement current path, SL structure driven by the feed cable is not effective in suppressing EMI. EMC design guideline commonly suggests that the strip line structure rather than microstrip line structure should be used in PCB structure. The results in this study indicate that SL and Shield cases yield resonances with high level peaks, due to the feed cable. EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL-APPLIED PHYSICS, CAMBRIDGE UNIV PRESS, 49, 2, 22098, Feb. 2010, Peer-reviwed, Since electromagnetic (EM) noise resulting from an arc discharge disturbs other electric devices, parameters on electromagnetic compatibility, as well as lifetime and reliability, are important properties for electrical contacts. To clarify the characteristics and the mechanism of the generation of the EM noise, the current noise up to GHz band frequency generated by slowly breaking contacts with external direct current (dc) magnetic field, up to 40 mT, was investigated experimentally using Ag and AgSnO(2) material. To reveal the characteristics as pure clean surface contact operation, the arc only at the operation of the first contact break was measured. Firstly, the effect of the external dc magnetic field on the duration and voltage fluctuation of the breaking arc of AgSnO(2) material, which has relatively longer arc duration, was quantified. The experimental results on AgSnO(2) material newly revealed that although applying external dc magnetic field is effective in reduction of duration of gaseous phase in arc discharge, higher variation of contact voltage in the gaseous phase which results in high frequency noise is caused. Secondly, the effect of the external dc magnetic field on the breaking arc of Ag was measured. It was found that larger current noise arises, when the contact voltage is rapidly varied at the arc discharge. There are two kinds of rapid changes, which cause high-frequency EMC problem, in the voltage waveform. One is at extinction of arc discharge. Other kind is short-duration arc (short-arc) before the ignition of the continuous metallic arc. Especially, we focused on the characteristics of the short-arc at the initial of the opening of the contact for clarifying the high frequency EMC problem. It was demonstrated that the spectrum of current noise in the case of "B = 30 mT" is smaller than that in the case of "B = 0 mT". In addition, duration and fluctuation of short-arc is suppressed by the dc magnetic field. These results are basic and useful finding to know not only the noise generation in the contact-breaking phenomena but also the material dependency for EMC problems.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE FIFTY-SIXTH IEEE HOLM CONFERENCE ON ELECTRICAL CONTACTS, IEEE, 18-23, 2010, Peer-reviwed, Arc discharge at breaking electrical contact is considered as a main source of an undesired electromagnetic (EM) noise. Short-duration time arc before an ignition of the continuous metallic arc discharge arises and causes high frequency EM noise. To clarify the characteristics and the mechanism of the generation of EM noise, the fluctuation of voltage and duration of short-time arc at slowly separating silver-based contacts are investigated experimentally in this paper. The opening velocity of the moving electrode was 60 mu m/s and it was determined so that it satisfied quasi-thermal equilibrium condition. Ag and Ag-88.3wt% SnO211.7wt% were chosen as contact test material. Breaking waveforms and aspects are measured. The voltage fluctuation for the Ag material case is larger than that for the Ag-88.3wt% SnO211.7wt%. For the Ag material case, some short-duration time arcs before the ignition of the continuous metallic arc discharge are observed. The arc duration of the continuous metallic arc at the first operation is relatively short. The measured aspects by highspeed camera indicate that the locations of the short-time arc are changed by each short-time arc. As operation numbers increase, arc duration becomes longer rapidly. The measured aspects by the high-speed camera indicated that the locations of the short-time arc are changed by each short-time arc and melting region on the contact surface due to the short-time arcs is enlarged dramatically by the short-time arc. These results are basic and useful finding and consideration to clarify not only the correspondence to noise generation of the contact-breaking phenomena but the material dependency for EMC problems.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E92C, 8, 1020-1022, Aug. 2009, Peer-reviwed, It is necessary to know how the contact voltage and contact area vary with time to clarify the physics of contact lifetime and contact resistance. In this paper, to clarify the effect of the heating value on the diameter of the contact area, the variations of the contact voltage and contact diameter with time are measured at a low-speed breaking contact near the thermal equilibrium condition under which a stable bridge is generated. The effect of the heating value on the relationship between the contact diameter and the length of the bridge at breaking is also discussed. In the results, the contact voltage waveform was found to be macroscopically proportional to the displacement of the moving electrode l(c). On the other hand, the contact diameter d(c) decreased slightly with increasing l(c). At all currents investigated d(c) decreased when l(c) increased. The length of the bridge at breaking was increased by increasing the current. A large heating value of the contact area resulted in a long bridge because the volume of the melted metal increases.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON COMMUNICATIONS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E92B, 6, 1920-1928, Jun. 2009, Peer-reviwed, Printed circuit boards (PCBs) driven by a connected feed cable are considered to be one of the main sources of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) from electronic devices. In this paper, a method for predicting the electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a PCB driven by a connected feed cable at up to gigahertz frequencies is proposed and demonstrated. The predictive model is based on the transmission line theory and current- and voltage-driven CM generation mechanisms with consideration of antenna impedance. Frequency responses of differential-mode (DM) and common-mode (CM) currents and far-electric field were investigated experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. First, the dominant component in total EM radiation from the PCB was identified by using the Source-Path-Antenna model. Although CM can dominate the total radiation at lower frequencies, DM is the dominant component above 3 GHz. Second, the method for predicting CM component at lower frequencies is proposed. And its validity was discussed by comparing FDTD calculated and measured results. Specifically, the relationship between the CM current and the terminating resistor was focused as important consequence for the prediction. Good agreement between the measured and predicted results shows the validity of the predicted results. The proposed model can predict CM current with sufficient accuracy, and also identify the primary coupling-mechanism of CM generation. Then far-electric field was predicted by using the proposed method. and it was demonstrated that outline of the frequency response of the undesired EM radiation from the PCB driven by the connected feed cable can be predicted with engineering accuracy (within 6 dB) up to 18 GHz. Finally, as example of application of equivalent circuit model to EMC design, effect of the width of the ground plane was predicted and discussed. The equivalent circuit model provides enough flexibility for different geometrical parameters and increases our ability to provide insights and design guidelines.

At first, model transmission lines, designed on the bear chip with the size of 4800 mu m square, were created as model parallel transmission lines with straight, right angle and bending lines. The measurement methods, usually used for transmission line on the printed circuit board, are applied to the sample IC. It was demonstrated that decrease of transmission coefficient and dramatically large far-end cross-talk enough to cause serious errors arise at gigahertz frequency band.

2008 ASIA-PACIFIC SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY AND 19TH INTERNATIONAL ZURICH SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, VOLS 1 AND 2, IEEE, 658-661, 2008, Peer-reviwed, Enclosure technique is widely used to control electromagnetic (EM) radiation from electronic devices. As the aperture of the enclosure causes leakage of EM wave, desired shielding effectiveness (SE) may not be satisfied. In this paper, as a basic study to establish EMC guideline for shielding enclosure with practical PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards), influence on EM radiation through aperture of metallic enclosure with a PCB inside was investigated. A typical metallic enclosure, 300x200x100 mm(3), with an aperture, 20002 mm(2) and PCB of 230x55 mm 2 are used to experiment and calculation. The PCB is put in the enclosure and the placement of the PCB, angle of the PCB a, are changed. Firstly, angle-pattern and frequency responses of far-electric fields were discussed. It was demonstrated that PCB placement influences resonance and strength of the EM radiation from aperture of the enclosure. Horizontal and vertical component of EM radiation is the smallest in five test placements at the "alpha = 270 degrees" case in which signal trace is turned opposite side of aperture. Secondly, frequency response of SE, which defined as the ratio of EM field level of "PCB only" case, which means without enclosure, to "PCB in enclosure" case, is discussed. The alpha = 270 case has the largest SE. Finally, the electric field distribution was also discussed by calculation to understand the details of the effect of PCB placement It was demonstrated that electric-coupling between PCB and wall of aperture side in the alpha = 270 case is weakened. This study is the basic but new considerations to realize method for suppressing EM radiation from a PCB with practical engineering stand point.

  • Effect of the thermal constant on temperature rise of silver palladium alloy contacts
Kazuaki Miyanaga; Yoshiki Kayano; Hiroshi Inoue
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90C, 7, 1405-1411, Jul. 2007, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, a method of separating the effects of the thermal diffusivity, durations and integral powers of the bridge and arc on the temperature rise of AgPd contacts was proposed. First, the effects of the Pd content on the durations and integral powers of the bridge and arc, and the temperature rise of the contacts were discussed. Because the integral power of bridge was larger than that of the arc under our experimental conditions of 40 V open-circuit, 5 A close-circuit and 100 mu m/s opening velocity, the temperature rise of the contacts was dominated by the bridge. No remarked difference in bridge duration can be seen among the six materials. Although the integral power of the bridge in the case of I'd was maximum, the maximum temperature rise of the contact was observed in the case of AgPd60. To clarify the contribution of each factor, the effect of thermal diffusivity on the temperature rise of the contact was evaluated by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. In the case of Pd, because its thermal diffusivity was largest, heat diffused rapidly. On the other hand, the thermal diffusivity in the case of AgPd60 was small, and heat diffused slowly to the holders. The maximum temperature rise was observed in the case of AgPd60. It was demonstrated that the proposed method of separating the effects of thermal diffusivity, durations and integral powers of the bridge and arc on the temperature rise of contacts is effective in enabling us to understand contact phenomena.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E90C, 7, 1504-1506, Jul. 2007, Peer-reviwed, To clarify the mechanism of the generation of electromagnetic (EM) noise, current and radiation noise up to the GHz band generated by slowly breaking silver-compound contacts were investigated experimentally. The current and radiation noise at the GHz band were observed. It was demonstrated that the frequency spectrums of the current and radiation noise correspond to the frequency responses of the circuit admittance and radiation efficiency of the experimental setup, respectively. It was revealed that even if current noise at the GHz band is very small, it can cause a large EM radiation noise because of the high radiation efficiency. From the time-frequency domain characteristics of current noise, it was clarified that the peaks of current noise at 10 MHz band arise immediately after the initiation of the are discharge and the transition from metallic phase to gaseous phase. On the other hand, the peak current noise above 100 MHz arises immediately after the initiation of the arc discharge.

Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Reliability of Electrical Products and Electrical Contacts, CHINA SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY PRESS, 172-177, 2007, Peer-reviwed, Research results on the radiation of MHz to GHz frequency band from 1) a printed circuit board (PCB) and 2) slowly breaking contact (SBC) are discussed as examples of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and reliability problem for electronic systems.
In first part, numerical and experimental results of the common and differential mode radiations from a sample PCB are described. The calculation has been done by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method using super computer. The typical size of a sample PCB under test is 150mm length, 100mm width and 1.53mm thickness made by FR4 material. A model of signal line is microstrip line with 2.8mm width which is matched for 50 ohm characteristic impedance. The results show connection of the PCB and line is important source of the undesired electromagnetic noise.
In second part, experimental results of electromagnetic noise from the breaking switch measured by the current probe and in anechoic chamber are described. The opening speed of the contact is about 100 micron meter per second, the current is 4.5 A, 36 V and the material of the electrodes are mainly silver. It is newly revealed that slowly opening contacts generate very high electromagnetic current and radiation noise more than 1 GHz.

  • EMI resulting from interconnected printed circuit boards by a coaxial cable

2007 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY: WORKSHOP AND TUTORIAL NOTES, VOLS 1-3, IEEE, 571-575, 2007, Peer-reviwed, To provide basic considerations for the realization of methods for predicting the electromagnetic (EM) radiation from interconnected printed circuit boards (PCBs) by a coaxial cable, the characteristics of the EM interference of test model PCB are investigated in this paper by experiment and numerical modeling. Comparing the cases with and without the interconnection, the ground plane of the interconnected PCBs and the interconnection cable are dominant radiation factor in the lower frequencies. These factors construct large common-mode (CM) antenna. On the other hand, the total EM radiation at GHz frequencies is simply determined by the differential-mode (DM) current on the signal trace, and cross-talk current on the victim traces. Consequently, correct predictions of CM current at lower frequencies and cross-talk are keys to the prediction of the total EMI behavior of the interconnected PCBs, because the DM current on the signal trace can be predicted by transmission line theory.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MAGNETICS, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 42, 10, 3329-3331, Oct. 2006, Peer-reviwed, A giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) probe was fabricated in order to detect high-frequency magnetic fields. Magnetic near field measurements were carried out using the probe. A microstrip line driven by a current whose frequency was changed from 500 Hz to 1 GHz was used as a signal source in the measurements. The probe could clearly detect the characteristics of the field distribution such as high magnetic field strengths near both longitudinal edges of the signal plane of the microstrip line and null points. At a signal frequency of 100 MHz, the experimental result was compared with numerical calculation data. The output profile of the measurement agreed well with the profile of the calculated field distribution. The detection of the characteristics and the agreement indicate the potential that the GMI probe has high spatial resolution in a wide frequency range.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E89C, 8, 1129-1135, Aug. 2006, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, the separation of heat generation and heat transfer related to temperature rise of silver palladium contact was investigated experimentally in order to predict the temperature rise of contact by the use conditions such as voltage range between 25 to 40 V, current range between 3.2 to 5.0 A and silver palladium alloy (AgPd) materials. Firstly, relationship between temperature rise of contact and supply power was discussed. The effects of heat generation and heat transfer on temperature rise were separated and quantified by least squares method. Secondly, effects of durations and integral powers of bridge and arc on temperature rise were also discussed by changing supply power. Results show that the integral power of the bridge increases when supply power increases. As the supply power increases, integral power of are also increases. The temperature rise is dominated by integral power of bridge. Remarkable difference of bridge duration can not be seen in the five materials (AgPd30, AgPd40, AgPd50, AgPd70 and Pd). The supply power is increased, arc duration gets longer. As weight percent of I'd content increases, the effect of supply power on arc duration becomes larger. Consequently, the integral power of arc increases. This study is a basic consideration to realize methods predicting temperature rise of contact.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E89C, 8, 1217-1223, Aug. 2006, Peer-reviwed, To provide basic considerations for the realization of methods for predicting the electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a printed circuit board (PCB) with plural signal traces driven in the even-mode, the characteristics of the EM radiation resulting from two signal traces on a PCB are investigated experimentally and by numerical modeling. First, the frequency responses of common-mode (CM) current and far-electric field as electromagnetic interference (EMI) are discussed. As the two traces are moved closer to the PCB edge, CM current and far-electric field increase. The frequency responses in the two signal trace case can be identified using insights gained from the single trace case. Second, to understand the details of the increase in CM current, the distribution of the current density on the ground plane is calculated and discussed. Although crosstalk ensues, the rule for PCB design is to keep two high-speed traces on the interior of the PCB whenever possible, from the point of view of EM radiation. Finally, an empirical formula to quantify the relationship between the positions of two traces and CM current is provided and discussed by comparing four different models. Results calculated with the empirical formula and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling are in good agreement, which indicates the empirical formula may be useful for developing EMI design guidelines.

2006 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, VOLS 1-3, PROCEEDINGS, IEEE, 166-171, 2006, Peer-reviwed, An equivalent circuit model for predicting electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a printed circuit board (PCB) driven by a connected feed cable is proposed and demonstrated. The equivalent circuit model is based on consideration of concepts of CM antenna impedance and distributed constant circuit to the conventional mechanisms of current- and voltage-driven. Good agreement between the predicted and measured results shows validity of the equivalent circuit model. The proposed model can predict and explain frequency response of CM current with engineering accuracy, and also express the intermediate state of the current-driven and the voltage-driven. It is demonstrated that outline of the frequency response of EM radiation from the PCB driven by the connected feed cable can be predicted up to 18 GHz. This study suggests basic method and consideration to establish methods predicting an EM radiation from the PCB driven by the connected feed cable.

IEICE Trans. Commun., IEICE, E88-B, 8, 3182-3188, Aug. 2005, Peer-reviwed, Electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a feed cable attached to a printed circuit board (PCB), which is commonly encountered electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem at high-speed electronic PCB designs, is investigated by experimental and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a guard-band structure as a method for suppressing the EM radiation from a PCB with a feed cable. A signal trace is located between two ground traces (guard-band : GB). Four different cross-sectional PCB structures, which are commonly used in microwave integrated circuits as typical structures, are used to compare the guard-band structure. Frequency response of common-mode (CM) current, electric field near a PCB, and far electric field (radiated emission) are investigated as characteristics of the EMI. Results show that the shield structure is effective in suppressing the CM current at lower frequency. However, structures in which a conductive plate exists near the signal trace yield resonances with high level peak on CM current, near and far-field. On the other hand, the guard-band structure is more effective than other structures in suppressing the EM radiation in the considered frequency range. Therefore the guard-band will be effective for high-density PCB packaging with high-speed traces.

  • Correspondence of common- and differential-mode components on EM radiation from surface microstrip line structure
    Y Kayano; M Tanaka; H Inoue
IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E88C, 8, 1688-1695, Aug. 2005, Peer-reviwed, It has been demonstrated that a common-mode (CM) current can dominate the EMI processes up to 1 GHz, despite the fact that a CM current is smaller than a differential-mode (DM) current. However, this description is insufficient to describe behavior above 1 GHz. In this paper the correspondence of CM and DM components for total electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a printed circuit board (PCB) with surface microstrip line, which is commonly used in microwave integrated circuits, at gigahertz frequency is studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. In order to characterize the EM radiation, the frequency response of the CM current, the electric field near the PCB, and the electric far field are investigated. First, the frequency response of the CM current, near and far-fields for the PCB with an attached feed cable are compared up to 5 GHz. Although the CM current decreases above a few gigahertz, near and far electric fields increase as the frequency becomes higher. Second, in order to distinguish between CM and DM radiation at high frequency, the frequency response and the angle pattern of the far-field from a PCB without the feed cable are discussed. The results show that radiation up to 1 GHz is related to the CM component. However, depending on polarization and PCB geometry, radiation may be dominated by the DM rather than the CM component. The results indicate that the DM component may be more significant relative to the CM component, and the increase in EM radiation can not be predicted from only the frequency response of CM current. Therefore, identifying the dominant component is essential for suppressing the EM radiation. This study is a basic consideration to realize a technique which is effective on the suppression of the EM radiation from the PCB with an attached feed cable.

  • Radiated emission from a PCB with an attached cable resulting from a nonzero ground plane impedance
    Y Kayano; M Tanaka; H Inoue
EMC 2005: IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Vols 1-3, Proceedings, IEEE, 955-960, 2005, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, radiated emission from a PCB with an attached cable resulting from a nonzero ground plane impedance is studied experimentally and with FDTD modeling. Frequency responses of the CM current, the electric field near the PCB, and the electric far field are investigated. First, the effect of a thin wire to mimic an interconnected ground wire is discussed. Comparing the cases with and without the thin wire, the difference is only at the resonance frequency, and there is no change on the magnitude of the CM current. Second, the effect of a termination on EMI coupling-path that results from the nonzero ground plane impedance is discussed. When the terminating resistor is smaller than the nonzero impedance, EMI antenna is driven as current-driven. Therefore, for relatively low impedance load such as 51 Q, EMI antenna is driven as voltage-driven at lower frequency. As the terminating resistor is larger, the CM current becomes larger at lower frequencies (10 similar to 100 MHz). This indicates that a high impedance load such as a logic IC results in larger radiation at lower frequency.

IEICE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTRONICS, IEICE-INST ELECTRONICS INFORMATION COMMUNICATIONS ENG, E87C, 8, 1268-1276, Aug. 2004, Peer-reviwed, Common-mode (CM) current on a feed cable attached to printed circuit board (PCB), which is one of main source of undesired electromagnetic radiation problem, is investigated by experimental and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. In this paper, frequency responses of CM current on PCB and feed cable are modeled and analyzed as an electromagnetic interference (EMI) antenna, which depends on the configuration of PCB with a wire cable. Several different configurations are prepared to demonstrate the effect of PCB dimension on resonance frequencies of CM current. In the results, EMI antenna in the frequency band around the first resonance frequency was comprised of the ground plane and cable. In order to explain the frequency response of CM current, two EMI antenna models are proposed and demonstrated. EMI antenna is comprised of the ground plane and cable, and the other EMI antenna is comprised of the trace on the ground plane. It is suggested that the result is one of basic consideration for the ground plane with cable that have high EMI problem and resonance frequency of CM current.

IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC, 46, 1, 46-53, Feb. 2004, Peer-reviwed, The common-mode (CM) current due to a trace near a printed circuit board (PCB) edge, and its suppression by a guard band have been studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. As the guard band, copper tape is connected along the entire edge of the ground plane. First, a PCB electromagnetic interferenc (EMI) coupling path that results from the nonzero impedance of the PCB ground plane is discussed. As the trace is moved closer to the PCB edge, the CM current increases. Then, the effect of the guard band on the CM current is detailed. A guard band parallel to and near a trace is most effective in suppressing the CM current. The cross-sectional magnetic field distribution at center of the PCB with and without the guard band is also calculated with FDTD modeling. The guard band decreases the magnetic field distributed on the reverse side of a PCB. These results indicate the guard band is effective in suppressing CM current. Finally, an empirical formula to quantify the relationship between the position of a trace and CM current for the case with a guard band is proposed. Calculated results using the empirical formula and FDTD modeling are in good agreement, which indicates this empirical formula should be useful for developing EMI design guidelines.

2004 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY, SYMPOSIUM RECORD 1-3, IEEE, 209-214, 2004, Peer-reviwed, A PCB, in which the ground plane has a finite width and the trace has unbalanced positioning, can result in common-mode (CM) radiation. So far, CM current which is generated by the unbalance of a trace and ground plane has been investigated by experiment and numerical method. It was clarified that CM current is well explained the radiation from PCB up to a few hundred megahertz, and addition of a guard band geometry, which is well connected to the ground plane, can be effective in suppressing the CM current. But it is seemed to be insufficient description for the phenomena observed at higher frequency. This study newly focuses on the correspondence of the CM current in total electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a PCB with a guard band up to 5 GHz. In results, although total radiated power and near electric field up to 1 GHz were related to CM current, the increase in EM radiation in higher frequencies (a few gigahertz) could not be predicted from only the frequency response of CM current There should suggest two radiation components for a PCB configuration; radiation as a result of a CM current due to the current driven mechanism, and direct radiation from a trace. At the higher frequencies, direct radiation from the trace may be more significant relative to the radiation due to the CM current. This research will be very useful and applicable to estimate the detail of EMC radiation problem from PCBs with attached cables.
