  • Evaluation of Ground Loop through the Floor in Human Body Communication

    International Journal of Wireless Information Networks, Springer Nature, 24, 2, 78-90, May 2017, Peer-reviwed, Ground loop through the floor is often modeled in the transmission model of Human Body Communication (HBC). This paper reports evaluation of ground loop through the floor in HBC between two subjects shaking their hands, and HBC between a subject and a stationary receiver on the floor. Subjects wore a transmitter or a receiver on the wrist. Received signal strength was measured on carpet-covered aluminum die cast floor, concrete floor, and wooden floor. The signal varied largely depending on the choice of the hand to shake hands or to touch the stationary receiver, i.e. using the hand with or without the device on the wrist. On the other hand, the signal level varied very little among floor constructions. These results indicate that most of the signal of HBC in the present case is transmitted through the capacitive coupling between the two human bodies or between the human body and the device touched by the user, and contribution of ground loop through the floor is small.

    Lead, Sensors and Materials, MYU K.K., 26, 8, 581-589, Oct. 2014, Peer-reviwed, In human body communication, it is important to investigate the input impedance characteristics of electrodes and transmission characteristics between transceivers for improving the qualities of communication and reducing power consumption. In this work, we studied the input impedance characteristics and transmission characteristics between a wristwatch device and a handheld device using both a three-dimensional electromagnetic field simulation and experiment at 10 MHz. The input impedance and transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation using a muscle homogenous model and those obtained from the measurement using a muscle-tissue-equivalent phantom showed good consistency. The calculated electric field around a human arm decreased as it moved away from the surface of the arm. This distribution of the electric field showed the advantages of human body communication, which are confidential communication and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Moreover, power consumption at the feeding point of the system was calculated from the transmission characteristics obtained from the simulation. This result indicated that human body communication achieves low-power consumption.

Wearable devices demand long battery life, small size, and light weight. Therefore, it is important to investigate the input impedance characteristics of the electrodes and design the electrode structure in such a way as to improve the communication qualities. The characteristics of the human body are important for designing the antennas (electrodes) used for close range communication in a human body communication system. Normally, homogenous muscle phantoms are used for measuring the input impedance characteristics of these antennas. However, nobody has measured the input impedance characteristics of electrodes for human body communication at a frequency of 10 MHz using phantoms that take into account the actual tissue structure of the human body. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the impedance characteristics using phantoms which consider skin, fat, and muscle. In this study, changes in the input impedance characteristics were analyzed considering the electrical properties of a phantom containing muscle and fat. Moreover we tried to develop a human muscle and fat phantom for human body communication system available at a frequency of 10 MHz.

  • Input impedance analysis of a human body communication transmitter using a realistic human model and a simplified layered model

    Lead, Journal of Japan Institute of Electronics Packaging, JIEP, 16, 7, 528-534, Nov. 2013, Peer-reviwed, Human body communication, which utilizes our body as part of the transmission medium, is expected to be a new transmission method for networks between wearable devices such as a body area network (BAN). Wearable devices demand a long battery operating life, small size, and light weight. Therefore, it is important to achieve impedance matching and improve transmissions between devices without any additional parts such as transformers or stubs. In this study, the input impedance characteristics of transmitter electrodes were investigated through a three-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis for improving transmission characteristics between devices by impedance matching. Simulation using a detailed human body model showed that the input impedance characteristic is different from that obtained when using a homogenous cylinder model. Furthermore, input impedance characteristics were analyzed by substituting the electrical properties of body tissues with those of other body tissues and air. This analysis has revealed that skin, fat and muscle are the main body tissues that determine the input impedance characteristics of electrodes. Moreover, we compared the electric field distribution and transmission characteristic of various models and found that skin, fat and muscle were also the dominant body tissues that determine these characteristics. In the transmitter configuration assumed in this study, the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) values inside the body were within safety standards.

    Lead, Journal of Life Support Engineering, LSE, 24, 2, 70-78, Sep. 2012, Peer-reviwed, Human body communication is carried out along the body surface between the wearable equipment, and this technology can be potentially used for Body Area Networks. In this study, transmitter electrodes for human body communication were analyzed at 10MHz by FDTD method. This analysis has shown that the input impedance of the electrodes was dependent on the structure and dimensions of the electrodes. We derived approximation formulas to express these relationships between the input impedance and the design parameters. As an example, the electrodes for the wristwatch-sized (24 × 24mm) device were designed to have a matched input impedance of 50Ω without using impedance transformers or stubs. The electric field around the electrodes on the human arm under the impedance-matched condition was 10∼20 dB stronger than that of the mismatched condition, and the VSWR characteristics were less than 2 when the matched electrodes were used. The electric fields and currents on the body surface and inside the body, and those of the equipment, were less than the safety standards, when the received signal had sufficient strength for practical receivers. The transmission power of the antenna was less than that of Bluetooth devices.
