    Journal of the Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection, The Japanese Society for Non-Destructive Inspection, 65, 5, 215-218, May 2016, Peer-reviwed, False, The Effects of the clamping force of the bolts of engine gaskets on acoustic emission (AE) signals caused by gas leaks from a cylinder were investigated in order to evaluate the gasket mounting condition. Leaks were caused by increasing the pressure of nitrogen gas injected into the cylinder. A proportional relationship was shown between the clamping force and the threshold pressure, the critical pressure for increasing the average signal level (ASL) of AE due to a leak, so that the clamping force could be evaluated based on AE monitoring. The threshold pressure was revealed to depend on the clamping force by application of a pre-clamping force on the gasket, while that indicates nearly a constant value for the gasket was shown without pre-clamping. It was also found that the increase ratio of ASL becomes larger by applying the pre-clamping force, and the coefficient of the relationship between the clamping force and the threshold pressure increases when using the gasket to apply the pre-clamping force. Therefore, the sealability of gaskets can be evaluated quantitatively by determining the coefficient of the proportional relationship.

  • Application of Mahalanobis-Taguchi method to identification of the initial motion part in acoustic emission waveforms

    Nihon Kikai Gakkai Ronbunshu, C Hen/Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Part C, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 79, 797, 145-149, Jan. 2013, Peer-reviwed, False, Mahalanobis-Taguchi (MT) method was applied to determining the first arrival time of acoustic emission (AE) waves in order to conduct waveform analyses without the experiences of experts. The recorded waveform was divided into the segments and that the Mahalanobis distances from the reference space consisting the back-ground noises to each segment were evaluated for identification. The appearance of the meaningful signal for the analysis could be found by searching the segment which firstly loses the similarity to the reference space. It was demonstrated that MT method could easily determine the arrival time which is coincident with the time obtained by visual observation based on the experiment using the simulated AE waves. It was found that MT method is effective to determine the arrival time of AE waves with high accuracy and robust against for configuration of the parameter in comparison with the voltage threshold method which has been generally used. © 2013 The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The properties of films are evaluated from a set of load-depth curves which is obtained by indentation using spherical indenters having different radii. In this study, finite element simulation of indentation is conducted to provide learning data of the network. Two multi-layered networks are independently used to identify the properties of films. By using the first network, the ranges of estimation are roughly estimated, and the appropriate properties can be determined by the second network. It is demonstrated that Young's moduli of 4-layered films can be successfully determined by the proposed method. It is also shown that both of Young's modulus and thickness can be identified 2-layered films.

We made a prototype system for the evaluation of assemblability/disassemblability, as examples of the evaluation of concurrence. The prototype system is based on DIS-model, functional model and evaluation engine. It is shown that the system is very useful for product design based on the concurrent engineering.

A small amount of the arrival time error, however, might influence on the AE source location. Present paper investigates the influence of errors including both the arrival time and sensor location on the AE source. Superiority of the neural network technique over the least square method was discussed on accuracy of location obtained by the arrival time differences. Applicability of source location using simulated AE source to real structure of pipe was also discussed. It was concluded that the neural network technique should provide available means to the AE source location because of less influence characteristics from the noise.

  • Fractal Characteristics of Delamination in CFRP Laminates

    Trends in NDE Science and Technology, Proceedings of the 14th World Conference on NDT, 1795-1798, Dec. 1996, Fractal dimension of delamination in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates was investigated. CFRP laminate specimens were damaged by impact loading and the ultrasonic inspection test was conducted to obtain C-scan images of delamination. By using the box counting method, it was demonstrated that the contour of delamination has fractal characteristics and its fractal dimension decreases with increasing the delamination area. The relationship between the fractal dimension and the delamination area shows linearity in the case of few cracks being generated in the specimens. Consequently, fractal dimension would be used for a parameter to evaluate the geometrical characteristics of delamination.

  • Estimation of acoustic emission source waveform of fracture using a neural network

It is shown that the shape of the simulated source waveform using piezoelectric ceramics is steplike, similar to that of mode I crack extension, and its vise-time can be varied by the resonance frequency in the thickness direction. The results imply that the simulated source can provide learning waveforms for the network. Actual AE waveforms were also acquired by conducting a tensile test of a chevron-notched graphite specimen. It was demonstrated that the appropriate source waveform associated with mode I crack extension was successfully determined by the network taught with simulated waveforms.

    Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Series A, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 60, 573, 1188-1192, May 1994, Peer-reviwed, False, A piece of piezoelectric ceramics attached to an aluminum alloy plate was subjected to voltage, and surface displacements of the opposite side were detected by a capacitive displacement sensor. The source waveforms were calculated by a deconvolution integral using Green's function. It was demonstrated that the shape of source waveforms due to the step function of voltage is a triangle, and the rise time of the waveform depends only on the resonance frequency in the thickness direction of ceramics. A wide range of the frequency spectrum of the source waveform was obtained. It was also found that source waveforms due to one period of the sine function of voltage contain three peak values. The shape of waveforms was varied by frequency and phase of applied voltage. Consequently, the artificial AE source using piezoelectric ceramics will be useful for source waveform analysis. Also, it is convenient to prepare learning waveforms for the waveform analysis using a neural network.

  • Applicability of Piezoelectric Ceramics to a Dipole Simulated AE Source

A small piezoelectric ceramic plate located near the crack tip of a chevron-notched PMMA specimen was subjected to a step voltage for generating simulated AE waves. AE waveforms due to piezoelectric ceramics were monitored with a 6-channel measurement system. A tensile test of the specimen was also conducted to investigate the correspondence with actual AE caused by crack extension. The radiation pattern of the simulated wave suggested the occurrence of mode I deformation at the simulated source. According to the moment tensor analysis, the direction of force was considered to be approximately normal to the crack surface. It is found that although there are a few types of deformation during crack extension, the simulated AE source using piezoelectric ceramics has the same main component as one of those in the fracture. The simulated AE source using piezoelectric ceramics is equivalent to the dipole source of mode I deformation.

  • AE Source Analysis by Means of a Neural Network (2nd Report, Effects of Network Structures)

We assume that each sampling point of the waveform corresponds to one unit of a layer in the network. It was found that the two-layer network assuming convolution form would be effective to determine source waveforms. Since linearity of the input/output relationship of the system would be limited, two-layer networks might not be available to deal with a general problem in AE source analysis. Hence, the network structure was extended to three layers, in which was used the back-propagation algorithm for learning. It was demonstrated that if appropriate waveform data were provided for learning, analogous source waveforms could be exactly determined. It was also revealed that the number of intermediate layer units might be of greater necessity than the number of learning patterns, but the number of units exerted little influence on the calculations.

A two-layer network and the artificial AE source signals caused by pencil lead break were used. Detected waveform data obtained by capacitive displadement transducer were processed by the personal computer system. For calculation of the unknown source waveform, the previously trained memory matrix of the network corresponded to the input/output relation. In association with the number of learning data, a small number of data should have estimated incorrect waveforms. But, when additional restrictions were imposed on the memory matrix, appropriate waveforms could be obtained irrespective of the number of learning data, which could be as small as one. The analysis also had such advantages as that relatively low noise data might be calculated if the detected data should include a lot of noise.

Wide band type AE sensors were attached on the gasket around the cylinder, and nitrogen gas was gradually injected to the cylinder in order to occur leaks. It was demonstrated that continuous AE signals due to leaks are detected at the internal pressure exceeding a certain level. Since the average signal level (ASL) was increased according to the internal pressure, it was found that the amounts of leaks could be evaluated by the ASL. It was also found that the AE counts are preferable to detect the occurrence of leaks because of the feature that the leaks lead to significantly change of the counts. The result of wavelet transform of the leak AE signal indicates that both of the peak frequency and its intensity vary with time so that the time-frequency analysis is useful to evaluate the leak behavior., Domestic conference

In this study, we propose a computer assisted instruction (CAI) system for simulating 3-dimensional mechanism construction. It is intended that the system is used by teachers to present their own visual materials in the class, and students also use the system as a self-learning software to see motion of any mechanism. We developed the system for gear mechanism construction and used in the class of machine drawing as a trial. Since evaluation of CAI system is necessary for improvement in the quality of contents, a questionnaire was issued to both of the teachers and the students participated in the class. Results of the questionnaire demonstrate that the system could satisfy requirements of the teachers. It was also revealed that the attitudes of students about learning are significantly affected by their impression of the contents provided by the system., Domestic conference
