電気学会論文誌C, The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 141, 4, 505-508, 01 Apr. 2021, Invited,The surface electromyography (EMG) is used to evaluate skeletal muscle, mainly in the clinical and sports science fields. Muscular activity is regulated by types and number of motor units (MUs). The action potential generated by MUs are measured as EMG. Most of the use of surface EMG is to evaluate the amount of muscle activity by amplitude information. Although surface EMG contains information on the activities of many MUs, these analyzes are rarely performed. We have developed a new method to extract conduction waves by focusing on the conduction of the potential waveform using a multi-channel surface EMG. By this method, it can be examined that the information on the emission of action potentials from motor nerves. We gave an overview of this method and its development. The method finds pairs of similar waveforms as conduction waves by quantitative judgment automatically. Since the position of conduction waves can be confirmed automatically, the position of the end-plate can be found. Also, depending on the research, it is possible to determine the angle of muscle fibers automatically. We are also studying the relationship between muscle thickness and conduction waves for diagnosis of muscle condition.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 12197 LNAI, 223-232, 2020, In this paper, we propose a training method to improve the stammering symptom, which automatically adjusts the rhythm of speech using vibrational stimulation linked to heart rate through a smart watch. We focus on the rhythm control effect by vibration, confirmed by the tactile stimulation training, and propose a training method to improve the symptoms of stammering while automatically adjusting the rhythm of the utterance based on the heartbeat-linked vibration stimuli. In addition, a system using the proposed method is constructed, and its effects on the heart rate by providing vibration stimulation to stutterers and on stammering symptoms are investigated. We present the effectiveness of stammering improvement training through vibration stimuli by experimenting with eight subjects.

Conference Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, 2019-October, 2743-2747, Oct. 2019, In this study, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using visual evoked potentials (VEPs) induced by blinking light have been studied. We examined them to change the phase and frequency of the blinking light with variable onset intervals and changing luminance to realize multiple choices in the BCI based on code modulated visual evoked potentials (cVEP) using transient VEP. We used three types of blinking lights with fluctuation interval in addition to one blinking light with fixed interval and attempted to discriminate between the four blinking lights that a subject observed. The amplitude of averaged VEPs with fluctuation interval decreased when a subject did not observe the blinking light. The discrimination rate for the blinking lights was approximately 84%. In addition, we examined the changing luminance of the blinking stimulus to increase the number of multiple choices. In this study, we obtained VEPs based on synchronous addition method and verified the effects of changing luminance and lighting interval in indicators. In addition, our study aims to increase the number of simultaneous choices of cVEP-based BCI using blinking light with variable onset interval and changing luminance. In this paper, we report the possibility of multiple choices by conducting experiments for the estimation of proposed methods.

Artificial Life and Robotics, 24, 2, 250-256, 01 Jun. 2019, Peer-reviwed, In recent times, smart devices equipped with small touch panels have become very popular. Many such smart devices use a software keyboard for character input. Unfortunately, software keyboards have a limitation: the number of buttons and the input degrees of freedom remain the same, because a button and an input value correspond one-to-one. Thus, if we reduce the screen size while the button size remains the same, the number of buttons must decrease. Alternatively, if we maintain the number of buttons and reduce the screen size, the size of the button decreases, making input increasingly difficult. In this study, we investigate a new character input method that is specifically adapted for use on small screens. The proposed input interface has 4 × 2 operational degrees of freedom and consists of four buttons and two actions. By handling two operations as one input, 64 input options are secured. Additionally, we experimentally evaluate the proposed character input user interface deployed on a smart device. The proposed method enables an input of approximately 25 characters per minute, and it shows robust input performance on a small screen compared to previous software methods. Thus, the proposed method is better suited to small screens than were previous methods.

Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, 773, 171-182, 2019, This paper examines an input method for ocular analysis that incorporates eye-motion and eye-blink features to enable an eye-controlled input interface that functions independent of gaze-position measurement. This was achieved by analyzing the visible light in images captured without using special equipment. We propose applying two methods. One method detects eye motions using optical flow. The other method classifies voluntary eye blinks. The experimental evaluations assessed both identification algorithms simultaneously. Both algorithms were also examined for applicability in an input interface. The results have been consolidated and evaluated. This paper concludes by considering of the future of this topic.

Artificial Life and Robotics, Springer Tokyo, 23, 3, 1-6, 04 Jun. 2018, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we propose a novel method for evaluating mental workload (MWL) using variances in facial temperature. Moreover, our method aims to evaluate autonomic nerve activity using single facial thermal imaging. The autonomic nervous system is active under MWL. In previous studies, temperature differences between the nasal and forehead portions of the face were used in MWL evaluation and estimation. Hence, nasal skin temperature (NST) is said to be a reliable indicator of autonomic nerve activity. In addition, autonomic nerve activity has little effect on forehead temperature
thus, temperature differences between the nasal and forehead portions of the face have also been demonstrated to be a good indicator of autonomic nerve activity (along with other physiological indicators such as EEG and heart rate). However, these approaches have not considered temperature changes in other parts of the face. Thus, we propose novel method using variances in temperature for the entire face. Our proposed method enables capture of other parts of the face for temperature monitoring, thereby increasing evaluation and estimation accuracy at higher sensitivity levels than conventional methods. Finally, we also examined whether further high-precision evaluation and estimation was feasible. Our results proved that our proposed method is a highly accurate evaluation method compared with results obtained in previous studies using NST.

International Conference on Intelligent Informatics and BioMedical Sciences, IEEE, 189-194, 24 Nov. 2017, Peer-reviwed, For pedestrian traffic, pushbutton traffic signals are used. However, pushbutton signal machines are often installed in inconvenient locations. Therefore, a new method is required to allow pedestrians to switch the traffic signals using a crossing request other than a pushbutton. In this research, we paid attention to the motions of the pedestrians with a crossing request, who tend to "stay and watch the traffic signal in front of the crosswalk." Pedestrian images were captured using a camera built into the traffic signals and analyzed using image processing. A new traffic signal system is proposed that uses the motions of a pedestrian with a crossing request as an input signal.

Journal of Signal Processing, Research Institute of Signal Processing, Japan, 21, 4, 207-210, 01 Jul. 2017, Peer-reviwed, Invited, In the past, many studies have been carried out on eye-gaze input; however, in this study, we developed an eye-glance input interface that tracks a combination of short eye movements. Unlike eye-gaze input that requires high accuracy measurements, eye-glance input can be detected with only a rough indication of the direction of the eye movements, making it possible to operate even terminals with small screens, such as smartphones. In this study, we used an inexpensive camera to measure eye movements and analyzed its output using the OpenCV, an open source computer vision and machine learning software library, to construct an inexpensive and non-contact interface. In a previous study, we developed an algorithm that detected eye-glance input through image analysis using OpenCV, and fed the result of the algorithm back to our subjects. In that study, the average detection rate for the eye-glance input was 76 %. However, we also observed several problems with the algorithm, particularly the problem of false detections due to blinking of the eyes, and implemented solutions for improvement. In this study, we have made improvement with respect to the unsatisfactory detection rate recorded in our previous study, and addressed problems related to user convenience.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 137, 4, 621-627, 2017, Peer-reviwed, The eye gaze input is attracting attention as a method for operating an information device with hands-free. However, it is difficult to use gaze input system over a small screen such as a smart device because eye gaze input method must accurately measure gaze positions. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed the eye-glance input method to use operating a small information device like smart phone. The eye-glance input method is able to input multiple-choice using oblique direction reciprocating movement. Accordingly, enabling an input operation that is independent of the screen size. In this paper, we report result of evaluation experiment of numbers inputting of using our developed a Multiple-choice eye-glance input system that utilized electrooculography that amplified via an AC coupling. As the result of experiments, it was found that the average of the input success rate and the average of the input character number per a minute in real-time eye-glance input at the experimental display design was 91.5% and about 15.2 character for 10 subjects.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 137, 4, 616-620, 2017, Peer-reviwed, Brain-Computer interfaces (BCIs) have been studied by using transient visual evoked potential (VEP) with various blinking stimuli. We examined to change the phase and the frequency of the blinking light with variable onset interval and changing luminance in order to realize multiple choices in the BCI using transient VEP. However, the number of the multiple choices was limited to four choices. Therefore, we examined to change the luminance of the blinking stimulus in order to increase the number of multiple choices. In this study, we try obtained VEPs based on synchronous addition method, and verified effects of changing luminance and lighting interval of indicators. In addition, we develop multiple choices interface by using blinking light with variable onset interval and changing luminance. In this paper, we report the possibility of multiple choices by experiment of estimate for proposed methods.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 137, 4, 645-651, 2017, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we propose an eyeblink feature parameter for automatically classifying conscious and unconscious eyeblinks. For the feature parameter, we focus on eyeblink waveform integral values, which are defined as a measurement record of the progression of eyeblinks. Previous studies have used duration time and waveform amplitude as the feature parameters. The integral values, on the other hand, have characteristics of both of those feature parameters. We obtain these parameters using a National Television System Committee format video camera by splitting a single interlaced image into two fields. We use frame-splitting methods to obtain and analyze the integral value of the eyeblink waveform. We experimentally compared the feature parameters to automatically classify conscious and unconscious eyeblinks. Duration time and amplitude did not significantly differ in some subject cases
however, we confirmed a significant difference when using the integral value. Our results suggest that eyeblink waveform integral values are effective for discriminating conscious eyeblinks. We believe that the integral value of the eyeblink waveform is applicable to an eyeblink input interface.

Communications in Computer and Information Science, Springer Verlag, 713, 164-169, 2017, Peer-reviwed, The objective of this study is to develop a multi gesture input interface using several eye motions simultaneously. In this study, we proposed a new automatic classification method for eye blinks and eye movements from moving images captured using a web camera installed on an information device. Eye motions were classified using two methods of image analysis. One method is the classification of the moving direction based on optical flow. The other method is the detection of voluntary blinks based on integral value of eye blink waveform recorded by changing the eye opening area. We developed an algorithm to run the two methods simultaneously. We also developed a classification system based on the proposed method and conducted experimental evaluation in which the average classification rate was 79.33%. This indicates that it is possible to distinguish multiple eye movements using a general video camera.

Communications in Computer and Information Science, Springer Verlag, 713, 347-352, 2017, Peer-reviwed, In our previous research, we expanded the range to be analyzed to the entire face. This was because there were regions in the mouth, in addition to the nose, where the temperature fluctuated according to the mental workload (MWL). We evaluated the MWL with high accuracy by this method. However, it has been clarified in previous studies that the edge portion of the face, where there is no angle between the thermography and the object to be photographed, exhibits decreased emissivity measured by reflection or the like, and, as a result, the accuracy of the temperature data decreases. In this study, we aim to automatically extract the target facial region from the thermal image taken by thermography by focusing on the temperature distribution of the facial thermal image, as well as examine the automation of the evaluation. As a result of evaluating whether the analysis range can be automatically extracted from 80 facial images, we succeeded in an automatic extraction that can be analyzed from about 90% of the images.

Communications in Computer and Information Science, Springer Verlag, 713, 237-242, 2017, Peer-reviwed, In this study, we developed a device for measuring skin potential activity requiring the subject to only grasp the interface. There is an extant method for measuring skin potential activity, which is an indicator for evaluating Mental Work-Load (MWL). It exploits the fact that when a human being experiences mental stress, such as tension or excitement, emotional sweating appears at skin sites such as the palm and sole
concomitantly, the skin potential at these sites varies. At present, skin potential activity of the hand is measured by electrodes attached to the whole arm. Alternatively, if a method can be developed to measure skin potential activity (and in turn emotional sweating) by an electrode placed on the palm only, it would be feasible to develop a novel portable burden-evaluation interface that can measure the MWL with the subject holding the interface. In this study, a prototype portable load-evaluation interface was investigated for its capacity to measure skin potential activity while the interface is held in the subject’s hand. This interface, wherein an electrode is attached to the device, rather than directly to the hand, can measure the parameters with the subject gripping the device. Moreover, by attaching the electrode laterally rather than longitudinally to the device, a touch by the subject, at any point on the sides of the device, enables measurement. The electrodes used in this study were tin foil tapes. In the experiment, subjects held the interface while it measured their MWL. However, the amplitude of skin potential activity (which reflects the strength of the stimulus administered on the subjects) obtained by the proposed method was lower than that obtained by the conventional method. Nonetheless, because sweat response due to stimulation could be quantified with the proposed method, the study demonstrated the possibility of load measurements considering only the palm.

日本シミュレーション学会論文誌, 日本シミュレーション学会, 8, 3, 101-108, 01 Sep. 2016, Peer-reviwed, There are many Multi-Agent Simulation systems that are intending easy to use. When we will evaluate modeling usability now, it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively from operating time, because there are variability in tasks caused by thinking time on construction of models. So we designed to evaluate usability from “the total time”, “the thinking time” and “the operating time”.
In this study we calculate “the remain time” by subtract operating time from total task executing time. The remain time is including the meta thinking time, that is, decision of the method and cognition of the task goal. And we compared the total time, operating time and the remain time, with a satisfaction rate of modeling.
We applied this method to 3 simulation systems to evaluate quantitative usability. Then there confirmed that a significant difference between 3 systems with the total time, however, there are only non significant differences between 3 systems with the remain time. This study shows that there is correlation between the remain time and the satisfaction rate. And estimated when using the remain time, It can be possible to evaluate quantitatively about tasks with much thinking time.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN, WILEY-BLACKWELL, 99, 7, 40-47, Jul. 2016, Peer-reviwed, In our previous studies, an eye control input interface using an electrooculograph (EOG) amplified by ac coupling has been developed. We proposed an eye gesture input interface using a combination of several eye movements. It is unnecessary for eye gesture input to restrict head movement, in contrast to conventional eye gaze input. However, it is necessary to use a start operation before eye gesture input. Therefore, eye glance input has been proposed. Eye glance input uses only a combination of eye movements in opposite directions, so that it does not need start operations. However, eye glance input has not always been successful because the algorithm for detection of eye movement from EOG signals was not adapted to slight shifts of the signal baseline. In this study, we propose a new determination algorithm for the eye glance input interface. In experiments using our improved algorithm, we achieved direction determination success rates of over 80% for six subjects. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

COMPUTERS HELPING PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, PT II (ICCHP 2016), SPRINGER INT PUBLISHING AG, 9759, 495-502, 2016, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we propose a new intention communication assisting system that uses eye movement. The proposed method solves the problems associated with a conventional eye gaze input method. A hands-free input method that uses the behavior of the eye, including blinking and line of sight, has been used for assisting the intention communication of people with severe physical disabilities. In particular, a line-of-sight input device that uses eye gazes has been used extensively because of its intuitive operation. In addition, this device can be used by any patient, except those with weak eye. However, the eye gaze method has disadvantages such as a certain level of input time is required for determining the eye gaze input, or it is necessary to present the information for fixation when performing input. In order to solve these problems, we propose a new line-of-sight input method, eye glance input method. Eye glance input can be performed in four directions by detecting reciprocating movement ( eye glance) in the oblique direction. Using the proposed method, it is possible to perform rapid environmental control with simple measurements. In addition, we developed an evaluation system using electrooculogram based on the proposed method. The evaluation system experimentally evaluated the input accuracy of 10 subjects. As a result, an average accuracy of approximately 84.82 % was determined, which confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. In addition, we examined the application of the proposed method to actual intention communication assisting systems.

HCI INTERNATIONAL 2016 - POSTERS' EXTENDED ABSTRACTS, PT II, SPRINGER INT PUBLISHING AG, 618, 177-181, 2016, Peer-reviwed, This paper proposes a new method for practical skin potential activity (SPA) measurement while driving a car by installing electrodes on the outer periphery of the steering wheel. Evaluating the psychophysiological state of the driver while driving is important for accident prevention. We investigated whether the physiological and psychological state of the driver can be evaluated by measuring SPA while driving. Therefore, we have devised a way to measure SPA measurement by installing electrodes in a handle. Electrodes are made of tin foil and are placed along the outer periphery of the wheel considering that their position while driving is not fixed. The potential difference is increased by changing the impedance through changing the width of electrodes. Moreover we try to experiment using this environment. An experiment to investigate the possibility of measuring SPA using the conventional and the proposed methods were conducted with five healthy adult males. A physical stimulus was applied to the forearm of the subjects. It was found that the proposed method could measure SPA, even though the result was slightly smaller than that of the conventional method of affixing electrodes directly on hands.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 136, 11, 1581-1585, 2016, Peer-reviwed, We evaluated the temperature change of facial parts as affected by mental work-load (MWL) using infrared thermography. Under MWL, autonomic nerves are active, and the skin surface temperature changes with muscular contraction. In particular, the nasal part of the face experiences the most intense change. Based on this, in previous studies MWL was evaluated by using nasal skin temperature. However, we considered whether other parts of the face experience temperature change under MWL. Therefore, in this study, to identify which other parts of the face experience temperature change, we performed an experiment to acquire facial thermal images when subjects perform a mental arithmetic calculation task. Our results indicate that, in addition to the nasal part, the temperatures around the lips and cheek might also increase under MWL.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2016 IEEE REGION 10 CONFERENCE (TENCON), IEEE, 3679-3683, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Recent years have seen rapid widespread adoption of smart devices equipped with a small touch panel. Generally, a software keyboard is problematic despite the use of a small touch panel for input; however, the number of choices and the operational flexibility of the input characters are always equal. This is because an increase in the number of buttons reduces the size of each button, whereas retaining the button size would necessarily reduce the number of buttons. In this study, we propose a new character input interface suitable for a small screen. In addition, we con figured the input interface based on the proposed method, and report the experiments that were carried out to evaluate the interface. As a result, even though the input may be difficult when using the conventional method, the proposed method is hardly considered to influence the input performance.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2016 IEEE REGION 10 CONFERENCE (TENCON), IEEE, 3782-3785, 2016, Peer-reviwed, Recently, the input interfaces for the PC using the EEG have been studied. The visual evoked potential (VEP) caused by the blinking light is one of waveforms observed in the EEG signal. The brain computer interfaces which based on the transient VEP (TRVEP) analysis and realized the four choices also have been studied. However, now we have been using a large amplifier and AD board. Furthermore, these two devices are expensive. In this study, in order to solve this problem we developed a small and inexpensive device. In addition, we performed comparative experiments of the conventional device and performance.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2016 IEEE REGION 10 CONFERENCE (TENCON), IEEE, 3798-3800, 2016, Peer-reviwed, A real-time eye-glance input interface is developed for a camera-enabled smartphone. Eye-glance input is one of various line-of-sight input methods that capture eye movements over a relatively small screen. In previous studies, a quasi-eyecontrol input interface was developed using the eye-gaze method, which uses gaze position as an input trigger. This method has allowed intuitive and accurate inputting to information devices. However, there are certain problems with it: (1) measurement accuracy requires accurate calibration and a fixed positional relationship between user and system; (2) deciding input position by eye-gaze time slows down the inputting process; (3) it is necessary to present orientation information when performing input. Put differently, problem (3) requires the accuracy of any eye-gaze measuring device to increase as the screen becomes smaller. The eye-gaze method has traditionally needed a relatively wide screen, which has made eye-control input difficult with a smartphone. Our proposed method can solve this problem because the required input accuracy is independent of screen size. We report a prototype input interface based on an eye-glance input method for a smartphone. This system has an experimentally measured line-of-sight accuracy of similar to 70%.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 136, 12, 1773-1778, 2016, Peer-reviwed, The aim of this study was to evaluate of muscular fatigue by muscle fiber condition velocity (MFCV) and electromyogram amplitude (RMS) during static and dynamic contractions. Ten healthy male volunteers performed isometric and dynamic exercises. Isometric exercises were at elbow joint angle 50°, 90° and 130° during 40% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Dynamic exercises were at elbow joint angle from 40° to 140° during 40% of MVC and speed was set at 10°/s and 20°/s. Surface EMG signals were measured by using a 15 channel surface electrode array from biceps brachii muscle. As the result, the values of MFCV were decrease with muscular fatigue in static and dynamic contractions and the values of RMS were increase with muscular fatigue in static and bending contraction.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), Springer Verlag, 9312 LNCS, 160-174, 2016, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new conscious eyeblink differentiation method, comprising an algorithm that takes into account differences in individuals, for use in a prospective eyeblink user interface. The proposed method uses a frame-splitting technique that improves the time resolution by splitting a single interlaced image into two fields—even and odd. Measuring eyeblinks with sufficient accuracy using a conventional NTSC video camera (30 fps) is difficult. However, the proposed method uses eyeblink amplitude as well as eyeblink duration as distinction thresholds. Further, the algorithm automatically differentiates eyeblinks by considering individual differences and selecting a large parameter of significance in each user. The results of evaluation experiments conducted using 30 subjects indicate that the proposed method automatically differentiates conscious eyeblinks with an accuracy rate of 83.6%on average. These results indicate that automatic differentiation of conscious eyeblinks using a conventional video camera incorporated with our proposed method is feasible.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN, WILEY-BLACKWELL, 98, 11, 9-18, Nov. 2015, Peer-reviwed, Muscular activity is investigated by analyzing the action potential generated by motor units. The multichannel surface electromyogram (EMG) is used to analyze the conduction of muscle potential, which is recorded as the interference electric potential generated by motor units. The multichannel surface EMG includes waveforms that conduct in several channels (conducting waves). We believe that it may be possible to analyze the changes in surface muscle potential caused by muscular activity so as to examine the composition of conducting waves in the multichannel surface EMG. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new method of analyzing the multichannel surface EMG. The proposed method involves quantitatively searching for all conducting waves that appear in the multichannel surface EMG in order to calculate the similarity of the waveforms. Using this method, which is referred to as the multichannel method for conducting waves (m-ch method), various types of data for each wave, including the conduction velocity and amplitude, across channels can be examined. Using the m-ch method, we analyzed the multichannel surface EMG in subjects holding a load. We also examined the changes in the composition of the conducting waves. We believe that muscular activity can be analyzed based on conducting waves from a surface EMG. (C) 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), Springer Verlag, 9172, 425-432, 2015, Peer-reviwed, We have developed a real-time Eye Glance input interface using a Web camera to capture eye gaze inputs. In previous studies, an eye control input interface was developed using an electro-oculograph (EOG) amplified by AC coupling. Our proposed Eye Gesture input interface used a combination of eye movements and did not require the restriction of head movement, unlike conventional eye gaze input methods. However, this method required an input start operation before capturing could commence. This led us to propose the Eye Glance input method that uses a combination of contradirectional eye movements as inputs and avoids the need for start operations. This method required the use of electrodes, which were uncomfortable to attach. The interface was therefore changed to a camera that used facial pictures to record eye movements to realize an improved noncontact and low-restraint interface. The Eye Glance input method measures the directional movement and time required by the eye to move a specified distance using optical flow with OpenCV from Intel. In this study, we analyzed the waveform obtained from eye movements using a purpose- built detection algorithm. In addition, we examined the reasons for detecting a waveform when eye movements failed.

2014 11TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING/ELECTRONICS, COMPUTER, TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (ECTI-CON), IEEE, 1320, 2014, Peer-reviwed, In this study, a technique designed to estimate of the autonomic nerve activity with a facial thermogram has been conducted a research and development. Workers feel more mental work-load (: MWL) by advanced information society. Preventing human errors and health hazards with MWL is important. Research activities about MWL, there is the method using thermogram. Thermogram can be taken by non-contact thermometer easily such as a thermography. It can take in the shop floor or life log. But the method needs to measures time-series data at all process of experiment. In addition, if a subject is out of focus of thrmography, it is difficult to estimate MWL. Therefore, measurement environment is limited. In this study, new method are proposed to estimate of the autonomic nerve activity with facial thermogram. If new method with facial thermogram can estimate MWL to high quality, it can use in various situation. Thermograms was taken when a subject solved the issue of a mental arithmetic calculation. And the proposed method has been analyzed by thermograms. As a result of this experiment, proposed method is more sensitive than past technique.

IEEJ Transactions on Electronics, Information and Systems, Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan, 134, 7, 924-930, 2014, Peer-reviwed, Our previous studies, eye control input interface using an electro-oculograph (EOG) amplified by AC coupling has been developed. We proposed Eye Gesture input interface using combination of several eye movements. It is unnecessary for Eye Gesture input to restrict head movement in comparison with conventional eye gaze input. However, it is necessary to use start operations before Eye Gesture input. Therefore, Eye Glance input has been proposed. Eye Glance input is to use only combination of contrary directional eye movements so that Eye Glance input does not need to use start operations. However, we could not always succeed in Eye Glance input because algorithm for detection of eye movement from EOG signals was not adapted to slight sift of signal base line. In this study, we proposed new determination algorithm for Eye Glance input interface. In experiments using our improved algorithm, we achieved a direction determination success rate of over 80% for 6 subjects. © 2014 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

2014 IEEE 2ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON USABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY FOCUSED REQUIREMENTS ENGINEERING (USARE), IEEE, 25-31, 2014, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents the results of the analysis of trends in the occurrence of eyeblinks for devising new input channels in handheld and wearable information devices. However, engineering a system that can distinguish between voluntary and spontaneous blinks is difficult. The study analyzes trends in the occurrence of eyeblinks of 50 subjects to classify blink types via experiments. However, noticeable differences between voluntary and spontaneous blinks exist for each subject. Three types of trends based on shape feature parameters (duration and amplitude) of eyeblinks were discovered. This study determines that the system can automatically and effectively classify voluntary and spontaneous eyeblinks.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 8007, 4, 225-234, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Optical measurement devices for eye movements are generally expensive and it is often necessary to restrict user head movements when various eye-gaze input interfaces are used. Previously, we proposed a novel eye-gesture input interface that utilized electrooculography amplified via an AC coupling that does not require a head mounted display[1]. Instead, combinations of eye-gaze displacement direction were used as the selection criteria. When used, this interface showed a success rate approximately 97.2%, but it was necessary for the user to declare his or her intention to perform an eye gesture by blinking or pressing an enter key. In this paper, we propose a novel eye-glance input interface that can consistently recognize glance behavior without a prior declaration, and provide a decision algorithm that we believe is suitable for eye-glance input interfaces such as small smartphone screens. In experiments using our improved eye-glance input interface, we achieved a detection rate of approximately 93% and a direction determination success rate of approximately 79.3%. A smartphone screen design for use with the eye-glance input interface is also proposed. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, Fuji Technology Press, 17, 6, 843-850, 2013, Peer-reviwed, Human-computer interaction is an important field in computer science. One means of such interaction is an eye gaze interface using both optical and electrical methods. Conventional optical devices for measuring eye movement are generally expensive and restrict user head movement. In this paper, we propose a novel eye gesture input interface (EGII) that does not require a head-mounted display. Precise eyemovement in combinations of direction is determined by electrooculographic signals amplified via AC coupling. We also developed and evaluated direction algorithms for determining features of the novel EGII. The best algorithm showed a success rate of 97% in recognizing eye movement in different direction combinations. We also created a small portable measurement device containing a biological amplifier to amplify signals and an A/D board for importing signals. Mean accuracy for the EGII was 95.6% out of 12 possible choices using the selected algorithm and our device. This device can thus be used anywhere and anyone.

Experiments were carried out to create a necessary calculation method for the displacement of an eye movement from an electro-oculograph amplified via an AC coupling Offline and online analyses were performed to compare the new method of using integration to the previous method of using the maximum amplitude during an interval from 0 to 0 of the derivative AC-EOG The mean accuracies of the choices increased from 88.8% to 967% in the case of 8 possible choices and from 72.8% to 86 4% in the case of 12 possible choices by using the integration instead of the maximum amplitude by the offline analyses. Moreover, the online analyses were done for confirmation of the calculation method of the displacement that was used with only the maximum displacement For the designs with 8 and 12 possible choices, the mean accuracies of the choices were 95.3% and 88.5%, respectively (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Scientific journal, English - A transient VEP-based real-time Brain-Computer Interface using non-direct gazed visual stimuli

Electromyography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 49, 8, 323-335, Nov. 2009, Peer-reviwed, It is necessary for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to be non-offensive devices for daily use to improve the quality of life of users, especially for the motor disabled. Some BCIs which are based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs), however, are unpleasant because users have to gaze at high-speed blinking light as visual stimuli. Furthermore, these kinds of BCIs may not be used as universal devices because SSVEPs are not detectable by some users. Considering these facts, we previously proposed a BCI using a non-direct gazing method based on transient VEPs. This interface used a low-speed blinking lattice pattern as visual stimuli and visual targets displayed on the right and the left sides of the stimuli. The gazing direction was determined by the waveform difference of transient VEPs detected when users gazed at either target. Compared with SSVEP-based BCIs, this BCI was less annoying because it used low-speed blinking visual stimuli, and it was not necessary for users to gaze at the stimuli directly. In this study, we propose an improved version of the BCI. Specifically, the gazing direction is determined in real time, and another gazing direction in which users gaze at a visual target displayed on the center of the screen is introduced while maintaining the annoyance-free advantage of the BCI. Experiments with 6 volunteer subjects showed an 84.2% accuracy rate in gazing direction judgments. The result suggests that the proposed BCI is more practical than the previous one because it can adapt to the change of gazing direction in real time.

生体医工学, Japanese Society for Medical and Biological Engineering, 46, 2, 202-211, Jun. 2008, Peer-reviwed, It is necessary for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to be non-offensive devices for daily use to improve the quality of life of users, especially for the motor disabled. This interface uses a low-speed blinking lattice pattern as visual stimuli, and users gaze at other visual targets displayed on the right and the left sides of the stimuli. The gaze direction was determined by the waveform difference of transient VEPs detected when users gazed at either target. This mechanism was established by the result of exploratory experiment that indicated transient VEPs were detected even when users did not gaze at stimuli directly and two different types of waveforms were shown depending on their gaze direction. Compared with SSVEP-based BCIs, the proposed BCI is less annoying because it uses a low-speed blinking pattern as visual stimuli and users do not have to gaze at the stimuli directly. In addition, bipolar derivation could reduce unnecessary signals and the number of responses used for signal averaging to detect transient VEPs, which led to shorter detection time of the VEPs providing this interface with acceptable speed as a BCI in terms of determining gaze direction. Experiments with 7 volunteer subjects showed a 90% accuracy rate in gaze direction judgments. The result suggests that the proposed BCI can be used as a substitute for SSVEP-based BCIs.

MODSIM 2005: INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON MODELLING AND SIMULATION: ADVANCES AND APPLICATIONS FOR MANAGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING, UNIV WESTERN AUSTRALIA, 3016-3022, 2005, Peer-reviwed, In order to solve the chronic traffic problem of a city's crowded downtown area, we developed the MITRAM, with that is a traffic simulator helps to find the possible solutions.
In reality, drivers normally control the car especially the speed by information they collect on the road while driving. But the drivers' judgments are sometimes unspecific and ambiguous. Fuzzy Control applies to the analysis of the target of no specific judgment. MITRAM links a Fuzzy Inference Process, which has two inputs and one output. It builds a model of driving operation by using the network. The construction of the model then can be close to the real situation from human's perspective.
Moreover, We integrate the fuzzy neural network (FNN) to the construction of FMV, thus the construction of FMV will no longer rely on the designer's experience but through the actual driving can be simulated through learning the vehicle's movement data. In the analysis and evaluation of the traffic simulator uses FMV in consecutive time series, the data of vehicular gap is very close to the actual data.
Besides, we can build car-following models of different driving characters by just changing the actual running data as learning data, because the model is built automatically through learning these data.
In this research, we set the lead car whose velocity variation similar to a sine wave in order to understand the influences on the vehicle troop caused by different driving operations.
We assume the lead car on a one-way road with no signals, and use more FMV following the lead car to simulate.
In simulation 1, we use 9 identical car-following FMV in organizing the vehicle troop in order to observe how the velocity variation of the lead car influences the vehicle troop. According to the results of simulation 1, we found that the larger the frequency of the lead car's velocity variation had been, the more the vehicular gap of the following cars is close to a sine wave. On the contrary, if the velocity variation of the lead car is smaller, the velocity variation of the vehicular gap will be more obvious.
In simulation 2, in order to understand how the different sequence of car-following FMV influence the vehicle troop, we used the same lead car as in simulation 1, and used 4 different car-following FMV, different sequences to organize a vehicle troop. We selected the longest length of a vehicle troop as a criterion of evaluation.
In simulation 2, the larger the frequency of the lead car's velocity variation is, the smaller the largest length of vehicle troop as well as the range of variation will be. Besides, the largest length of vehicle troop will be different according to the following car's sequence even we use the same lead car.
From analyzing the results of simulation1 and simulation 2, we found in the motion of the vehicle troop, the sharper the sate of the lead car is, the bigger the impact on the following cars is. There will be conflicts if the following cars can't follow the state of the lead car. On the other hand, when the state variation of the lead car is slower, the driving characters of the following car will be exhibited more easily. At the same time, the influence caused by different driving characters will have a greater impact on the vehicle troop. Especially in the traffic jams in the city area, it's a common phenomenon that the velocity of vehicles on the road are decided by the lead cars that the acceleration are slightly fluctuated. Therefore we argue that the driving character of the moving vehicles will influence the vehicle troop easily. Based on the understanding of this point, we further argue that it's necessary to analyze the driving character from microcosmic perspective in doing the simulation of city traffic.

ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN JAPAN PART III-FUNDAMENTAL ELECTRONIC SCIENCE, SCRIPTA TECHNICA-JOHN WILEY & SONS, 86, 10, 36-42, 2003, Peer-reviwed, It has been difficult in the past to differentiate simply an input eye-gaze (fixation) and a noninput eye-gaze (pause) in using an eye-gaze character input interface. This is because there are two major gazes having two different roles, "inputting" and "searching," which are difficult to differentiate from gazing time, etc. In this study, a new screen design interface has been proposed. In this design, input areas for inputting an "input" are assigned on the left and right side of the screen, and a guide area having a character arrangement similar to the input areas is assigned for "searching" in the center. Since the location of a character can be searched by the guide area, the eye-gaze for "searching" can be expected to occur in the guide area and the eye-gaze for "inputting" in the input areas. Whether noninput eye-gazes (pauses) in the input areas are reduced by the guide method is tested by comparing the past and the guide methods. As a result, the efficacy of the guide method has been verified from the fact that the frequency of noninput eye-gazes (pauses) is decreased about 40% from that of the past method, while the overall eye-gaze frequency increases with the guide method, with its increased inputting time as compared with the past method. In addition, it has been found that input eye-gazes and noninput eye-gazes (pauses) which could not be separated based on time up to now could be separated at a rate of 88%. Electromyography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 42, 1, 7-16, 2002, Peer-reviwed, The effect of pressured environment from 1 to 24 ATA (Atmosphere Absolute) on total power spectrum (TP) of physiological tremor, whose value was the sum of power spectra for frequency range in 0.5 ~ 50Hz, was investigated. The main effects obtained were as follows. (1) In the case of 3 ATA, TP during the pressure holding period denoted a similar value as the value in 1 ATA. In the latter half of the period, the TP increased. When the pressured environment is 4 ATA, in which the partial pressure of the nitrogen gas was 3.6 ATA, the TP decreased during the pressure holding period compared with the value in 1 ATA. Nitrogen narcosis was recognized at the partial pressure of 3.6 ATA, thus the effect denoted a decrease of TP. (2) In the cases of 16 and 19 ATA using heliox gas, during the pressure holding period, TP decreased compared with the value in 1 ATA, but in the case of 24 ATA the value increased. The partial pressure of helium gas of 23.6 ATA indicated a high pressure nervous syndrome, therefore, the influence of high pressure on TP was recognized as one of the causes of the increase of TP. (3) The influence of inhibitors of the autonomic nervous system on TP during the pressure holding period of 3 ATA was recognized. After intake of the inhibitor for the parasympathetic nerve (atropine) during the pressure period, TP increased, while for the intake of the inhibitor for the sympathetic nerve (propanol), TP decreased.

情報処理学会論文誌:数理モデル化と応用, Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), 42, SIG14, 90-97, Dec. 2001, Peer-reviwed, In constructing a road traffic simulator for congestion analysis based on a microscopic model, the modeling of driver's behavior becomes important. However, expressing a driver's behavior precisely and in detail involves consideration of a variety of factors and ambiguous and qualitatie information. Consequently, it is extremely difficult to build models using simple differential equations or statistical formaula. In this papaer, we propose using a network structure based on fuzzy inferences to build models that contain many factors for simulating drivers maneuvering around obstacles or across railroad crossings. Such maneuvers as driving around obstacles, for example vehicles parked or stopped on the roadside, can be cause of traffic congestion. The models thus build are used to simulated such complex maneuvers on a computer in order to analyze some cases of traffic congestion. Moreover, we have also build models for analyzing congestion occuring at railroad corossings and for investigating some effects on the congestion due to variations between the tensdencies of individual drivers. With these simulations we will demonstrate the usefulness of network-structured models.

シミュレーション, Japan Society for Simmulation Technology, 20, 2, 171-179, Jun. 2001, Peer-reviwed, We have proposed a microscopic road traffic simulator (MITRAM) for analyzing chronic traffic congestion on road in a city area. The fuzzy model vehicle (FMV) is used for the MITRAM. We have tried to simulate the actual accelerator and brake operations to follow a leading vehicle by using the FMV constructed by neural networks. This FMV was trained with actual measurement data to reproduce the actual operations. The actual operations were reproduced in most of the simulation results. However, the simulation results greatly different from the actual operations also existed in some cases. It is thought that one certain operation was gained by experiencing many driving situations. Therefore, it was thought that some actual operation that we wanted to reproduce might not be reproduced by the FMV trained with only measurement data obtained during the same actual operation that we wanted to reproduce. In this paper, measurement data reference simulation was proposed as the technique of giving the training data which are not only the measurement data to the FMV. Since the FMV runs referring to the measurement data even when the FMV separates greatly with those in this simulation, ideal data which brings the FMV close to the measurement data can be made. We investigated whether some actual operation would be reproduced by the FMV which was trained with both data from the measurement data reference simulation and measurement data. It was found that the measurement data reference simulation was effective method as the technique of making the training data for the FMV.

MATHEMATICAL AND COMPUTER MODELLING, PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD, 33, 6-7, 771-782, Mar. 2001, Peer-reviwed, We have already proposed a simulator of a road traffic system, and called it MITRAM. The MITRAM consists of microscopic models for vehicles which have the capability of their own decision-making through the application of fuzzy logic. This microscopic model is called a fuzzy model vehicle (FMV). We have simulated the driving operation of a following vehicle through the FMV, Data of the following vehicle speed, the relative speed of the following one to the leading vehicle, and so on, were obtained as the simulation data of the FMV. To calculate only the mean and the variance of the simulation data was not sufficient to describe the logic inferences of the FMV. In this paper, we propose an evaluating method by using a chaotic analysis. Correlation exponents and Lyapunov exponents were calculated for the data of the following vehicle speed, the relative speed of the following one to the leading vehicle, and the spacing distance between the following and the leading vehicles. We also calculated both the exponents of the data normalized by the standard deviation, in order to evaluate the effect of the variance. The correlation exponents and the maximum Lyapunov exponents of the relative speed were different from those of the following vehicle speed and the spacing distance. Differences between the simulation and the measurement data were found at both the correlation exponents and the Lyapunov exponents. The variance had a larger effect on the correlation exponents for the simulation data than for the measurement data. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

One is called the input area which is located on the right and left sides of the display. The orther is called the guide area which is located on the central part of the display. The guide area is useful for search of the position of a desired character. We could almost distinguish between non-input and input-fixations. However the distinction was not perfect. So we investigated characteristic of non-input and input fixations'duration, saccadic duration and saccadic amplitude. We also investigated the effect of the saccadic characters on distinction between non-input and input fixations. We found non-input and input fixations. were almost able to separate by their duration. We suggested that it was effective for the distinction to use the saccadic characters.

APPLIED HUMAN SCIENCE, Japan Society of Physiological Anthropology, 15, 6, 287-294, Nov. 1996, Peer-reviwed, We tried to discriminate different forearm's motions by surface EMG signals using neural network. In order to get a higher discrimination rate, the positions of electrodes were improved. We also tried to discriminate similar motions in order to clarify the limitation of the discrimination by surface EMG signals. Two experiments were carried out. One was to discriminate five different motions: grasp, wrist flexion, wrist extension, forearm pronation, and forearm supination (Experiment 1). The other was to discriminate four similar motions which have different quantitative definitions at grasp, wrist flexion/extension, or forearm pronatio/supination (Experiment 2). Four surface electrodes were placed on the skin above the main active muscles: short radial extensor m. of wrist, supinator m., long radial extensor m. of wrist, and ulnar flexor m. of wrist, considering anatomical functions of the forearm's muscles. EMG signals were recorded during 2 sec while the subjects kept the motions. Recorded EMG signals were sampled at 200 msec intervals after full-wave rectifying and low-pass filtering. Therefore, the number of sampling data patterns of EMG signals was 10 for every motion. Three layers of neural network was used for discrimination. The number of units in the input layer is 4, and the number of units in the output layer is 5 or 4. In order to get the best discrimination rate of the motions, we changed the number of units in the hidden layer from 3 to 12. The neural network was trained by the back-propagation algorithm. In Experiment 1, the best average values of discrimination rates under three pattems of EMG signals for each subject were 96.0%, 98.0%, and 87.2% when the numbers of units in the hidden layer were 10, 11, and 3 respectively. In Experiment 2 using original EMG patterns, the best average values of discrimination rates at grasp, extension/flexion, and pronation/supination were 59.5%, 76.0%, and 25.0% respectively. By using normalized EMG patterns, these were 40.0%, 84.8%, and 55.5% respectively.

It has two peak frequencies in the power spectrum. The origin of the peaks has not been well elucidated. Therefore, the mechanism and its application to labor science is studied in the paper. 3. The effect of immersion of fingers in water and of loading weights on; fingers are performed to elucidate the mechanism involved. 4. It is found that the power spectrum output has two bands from the lower frequency band (1.5-18 Hz) from the CNS and the higher frequency band (18-50 Hz). 5. These results are applied to the evaluation of fatigue of fingers in tapping and typing work. 6. The total power, which is the sum of power spectrum in frequency range between 1.5 and 50 Hz, is employed as evaluational index. The change of total power explains finger fatigue during tapping and typing loads. 7. Physiological tremor is an effective way of evaluating the function of fingers in human work.

The numerical letters were mainly used as the objects. The influences of (1) directlon of the movement, (2) thickness of line of letter (i.e., stroke width) ,and (3) design of letter to the visual recognition were measured. From these measurements, the optimal numerical letters were proposed in the first step of the study, which were called as llvIAL(initial most optimal arabic letters). The visual recognition of both moving letters IMAL and letters JIS ( Japan industrial standard) employed for motionless state was compared for both the moving and the motionless states. In the presentation for motionless state, Ietters JIS showed iower error rate, but the statistical significance was not proved, while in the presentation for horizontally moving state letters IMAL showed better visual recognition than letters JIS with the significant level of 5 %. Therefore, the useful numerical letters for moving state could be designed in the study. Moreover, the visual recognition of letters IMAL was evaluated for various moving velocities. The optimal moving velocities for both letters IMAL and JIS were found.

Systems and Computers in Japan, 23, 7, 56-65, 1992, Peer-reviwed, Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been studied intensively in recent years. In FES, the muscle or nerve of the tetraplegic patient with damage in the central nervous system is stimulated electrically to contract the muscle, aiming at the restoration of the lost function. When the closed‐loop control is employed in FES to control the two joints of the knee and the ankle simultaneously, the inertia arising from the movement of the upper (knee) joint, operates as an external disturbance to the lower (ankle) joint, and deteriorates its transient response. As a result, it is required to construct a control system with a high suppression ability for the external disturbance. It is noted in this study that the stiffness of the human joint, i.e., the difficulty to move (mechanical impedance), is one of the factors which determines the motion of the joint, and the external disturbance affects the motion less if the difficulty to move is enhanced. Further, it is noted that the mechanical impedance of the joint is increased when the tension of the antagonist muscle is increased. Then a method is devised in which the mechanical impedance of the joint is adjusted by controlling the tension of the antagonist muscle in parallel to the control of the joint angle by the agonist muscle. By increasing the mechanical impedance of the joint using this method, a system can be constructed which suppresses the effect of the external disturbance from the motion of the other joint. The proposed system is applied to the control of the ankle joint, and it is shown that the effect of the knee joint movement is suppressed. Copyright © 1992 Wiley Periodicals, Inc., A Wiley Company

Japanese, IEICE technical report. ME and bio cybernetics, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, http://id.ndl.go.jp/bib/023872455, Various eye-gaze input interface are generally expensive, or need to restrict the user's head movements. We had proposed a novel eye-gaze input interface that combined a new display design of interface (Eye Gesture) with an electro-oculograph amplified via an AC coupling. And, realized a small portable system with device of our own making was carried out for miniaturization and low cost. In this study, we have developed an Eye Gesture input interface of portability with using a smartphone. And we have proposed and examined three types of input screen design: lattice type, arrow type and extended type.

Japanese, Technical report of IEICE. HIP, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, http://id.ndl.go.jp/bib/023744878, We had proposed a novel eye-gaze input interface that combined a head mounted display (HMD) with an electro-oculograph amplified via an AC coupling. This interface is not expensive and enables the user to escape the restriction of the user's head movements. And base on this, we proposed a new display design of interface using eye movement of not vertical but diagonal directions to increase the number of selected objects without HMD (Eye Gesture). In this study, in order to realize a small portable system, device of our own making was carried out to biological amplifier for amplification of the signal and AD board for import of the signal. As a result, for the Eye Gesture input interface, the mean accuracies of the choices were 95.6% in the case of 12 possible choices by the device of our own making. And the proposed system for the Eye Gesture input interface can be used in a variety of environments has been shown.

Dec. 2010 - Examination of brain-computer interface with multi-possible-choices by single 10Hz blinking photic stimulus using a transient VEP analysis
YAMANISHI Nao; ITAKURA Naoaki; MITO Kazuyuki
Japanese, IEICE technical report, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, http://id.ndl.go.jp/bib/10915117, Generally, a brain-computer interface (BCI) using a visual evoked potential (VEP) has been realized by means of discriminating a peek frequency of a steady-state VEP induced by blinking photic stimuli at the frequency of around 10 Hz. Therefore, it was necessary to use blinking photic stimuli with different frequencies and the same number of possible choices. However, the frequency of blinking photic stimuli induced the VEP is limited. In this study, we examined the possibility of a BCI with 3 possible choices by only single 10 Hz blinking photic stimulus. For realizing this BCI, it is necessary to discriminate among the 3 VEPs during gazing at the center, the right side, and the left side of photic stimulus. From the results, it was found that the accuracies of discrimination between the 2 VEPs during gazing at the right side and the left side of photic stimulus was high by utilizing the transient VEP analysis.

Jun. 2010 - Effects of high heels walking on kinematic and kinetic parameters during stair descent : Comparison of non-skilled and skilled
MUTO Tomokazu; IATAKURA Naoki; MITO Kazuyuki
Japanese, IEICE technical report, The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, http://id.ndl.go.jp/bib/10712716, We examined the effect of high heel shoes on kinematic and kinetic walking parameters in healthy skilled and non-skilled users during stair descent by using three-dimensional motion analysis and floor reaction force. There was a tendency to give priority to the speed rather than the stability in the skilled. The result suggested that the load to the knee and ankle joints was increased in the high heel stair walking.

01 Apr. 2009 - 31 Mar. 2011 - A development of the microscopic road traffic simulator for congestion analysis including environmental and economic factors

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), In this study, we developed the road traffic simulator "MITRAM" for the analysis of traffic congestion by employing fuzzy reasoning, and carried out simulation analysis for four problems. First, we verified the driving model with the theoretical values of traffic engineering and field data, and obtained reasonable results. The driving model consists of vehicle-following model, right-turn model and signal-intersection model. Moreover, we also verified that when a large number of vehicles are generated, the MITRAM offers general traffic rules and characteristics. Next, we applied the MITRAM to the following research applications. 1.In order to feed the sensor data from real traffic directly into the MITRAM, we constructed an intersection network model. We applied the model to the MITRAM and simulated the traffic of a relatively large area modeling the 41 intersections in the city area of Kochi-shi. It is confirmed that the simulation results are accurate and reproducible. In addition, we quantitatively verified that flatting the traffic demand due to off-peak is effective for reducing the congestion. 2.We added the function of emission estimation of NO_x (oxides of nitrogen) and CO_2 from the traffic data in the MITRAM. We carried out road traffic simulation for the city area of Chofu-shi and obtained the amount of air pollution emission at the several points of the city area. The result showed that it is possible to understand the relationships between the amount of emission and traffic signal control by using the function. 3.It is a significant problem that railway crossings in city areas hinder surrounding road traffic. One solution for this is to install traffic signals. We carried out simulation analysis for the railway crossing area of the first Keihin national road near Kamata station of Keihin express. We confirmed that the installation of traffic signals increased the traffic capacity by 60% ; thus, it is very effective for reducing the congestion. 4.We added the function of route choice into vehicles. We carried out simulation analysis to examine whether providing traffic information to each vehicle is effective for reducing the congestion and causes a new congestion in the surrounding area. The result showed that traffic information significantly affected the traffic flow. We confirmed that traffic information is useful for reducing congestion while it propagates some congestion to the surrounding roads., 15560345

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Japan Women's College of Physical Education, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 1.The effects of breathing exercise : Breathing exercise were carried out once a week. Exercise time was one and half hours. It continued five years. The heart rate and blood pressure were measured almost every times. The flexibility, body fat, stature, bone density were measured several times in a year. Stature grew taller than before exercise and the difference was statistically significant. Flexibility increased after exercise, it was high significant. Bone density was not significant. 2.The breathing of shooting : we analyzed breathing at the time of shooting of Lanny Bassham who are world and Olympic champion. 3.Swimming and breathing, Dance and breathing, Gymnastic and breathing 4.On the influence of breathing method on change of center of gravity of body during standing posture 5.Questionary survey about an effects of breathing method to perform before a class 6.Education of Breathing : Kataoka give some lectures at 4^International Summer Course for P.E.Teachers in Estonia, 5^ International Seminar for P.E.Teacheres in Finland(2004), 5^ International Summer Course for P.E.Teachers in Estonia(2005), 15500422

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), The research was performed to develop the artificial neural network models for explaining and resolving the mammalian brain function. We proposed the covariance field neural network model which is a natural extension of the classical analogue neural network model, and gives a mean field approximation to Markov random fields. The covariance field neural network can represent the covariance of spike timing as the phase difference, which is important in brain information processing, and can perform information processing based on spike timing. As a mean field approximation it gives much better approximation accuracy for Markov random fields even for the large weight strength compared with the naive mean field model. We performed computer experiments to support this. We also applied this model to image segmentation, and confirmed the segmentation capability with phase-difference. We proposed the mean field learning for Boltzmann machine, and performed some fundamental experiments to confirm the quick training speed for the phase. On the other hand, we proposed the efficient learning methods for neural netoworks, especially for the recently highlighted support vector machine(SVM). We extended SVM learning to the efficient multi-class algorithm, and apply the second order cone programming method to SVM learning. In addition we proposed the maximal margin classifier based on the geometric method, which behaves faster than the quick SVM known as SMO. Finally we proposed a new learning machine based on the kernel PCA, which can automatically determine the kernel parameter so that it can realize the no free parameter learning machine., 13650402

01 Apr. 2000 - 31 Mar. 2002Development of Intelligent System Method Based on a Macroscopic Viewpoint of Brain Functions and Construction of its Hardware System
HONDA Nakaji; ITAKURA Naoaki
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, The University of Electro-Communications, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), As a new methodology of intelligent system, we have proposed an pattern information based active learning method (PBALM), which has a non-exact processing nature without complex computational formulas. The PBALM is formed on the basis of fuzzy concepts, striving for human-like information processing. Typical fuzzy rules. On the other hand, the PBALM features are ambiguous pattern processings. This simulates human brain nature in the modeling of processing information in pattern-like images rather than utilizing numerical interpretations, when humans acquire knowledge from complex targets. The PBALM has plural processing units called IDS's, which are tasked with extracting useful information from a system subject to modeling. In order to realize an PBALM system which is capable of performing complex, large scale modeling with an excellent fault tolerant architecture, dedicated hardware for IDS is indispensable. For the purpose of developing such an intelligent hardware system, we tentatively designed an IDS hardware unit using an evaluation board available on the market, and verified how effective it would be. Because we confirmed the effectiveness of dedicated IDS hardware with the evaluation board, we developed a new IDS processing unit called 'HIDS'. We designed a printed circuit board on which an IDS controller which ran at 100MHz, were mounted. In performance test results, in spite of the parallelization of only four HIDS boards, the performance of HIDS was far superior in the processing time in comparison to that of the software-based PBALM. By using HIDS units that we developed in this project, the PBALM system would be applied to modeling and control applications under demanding realtime conditions., 12650408
