Proceedings 2021 10th International Congress on Advanced Applied Informatics IIAI-AAI 2021, 29, 287-290, Jul. 2021, Peer-reviwed, Most Japanese universities work under intense pressure to maintain or improve their ratings. Therefore, reputation management is very important for them to drive admissions and to increase their brand awareness among the public. Reputation in this case refers to how universities are perceived by each stakeholder. University ranking is an essential tool for reputation management, but how it is used, is unclear. We conducted a questionnaire survey to clarify the concept, and found differences in the activities related to coping with university ranking, their contents, and the issues among universities. In this paper, we present and explain the results of the questionnaire survey.

National universities in Japan are required to create midterm plans based on logic models. However, universities are still in trouble about what item should be written about five viewpoints of the logic model - purpose, input, activity, output, and outcome. In this paper, we paid attention to the analysis of the third term midterm plan by the expert who extracted the typical sentences which represent the viewpoints. We applied the machine learning for those extracted sentences to identify the characteristic (feature) words and pattern of each viewpoint. It turned out that the activities have simple pattern and can be recognized with high identification performance. However, the output and the outcome are hard to describe the viewpoints.

NEW PERSPECTIVES IN SCIENCE EDUCATION, 8TH EDITION, FILODIRITTO PUBLISHER, 297-300, 2019, Peer-reviwed, In scientific research, it costs a lot to reproduce experiments succeeded in the past. For efficiency of research, scientific researchers come to reuse research data of the past research. To do so, it is necessary not only to archive research data, but research data should be arranged confirming to FAIR data principles. FAIR is acronym of "findability", "accessibility", "interoperability" and "re-usability". To realize FAIR data principle, fulfillment of metadata and persistent identifier on data is significant. On the other hands, institutional data on education and institutional management are coming to be recognized significant for university management to secure fundamental information of universities. In that context the FAIR data principle is effective to facilitate collecting institutional data as well. However, generally speaking, as the technical situations of institutional information are different from university to university, it is difficult to acquire a general resolution. We study the problem to make institutional data and information to be abstract using ontology engineering, and consider the design of institutional data and information that meets FAIR data principles.

Proceedings - 2018 7th International Congress on Advanced Applied Informatics, IIAI-AAI 2018, 964-965, 02 Jul. 2018, Peer-reviwed, Universities play an important role as centers of local communities. In recent years, new faculties and graduate schools have been established for students to learn about solving problems through local community involvement. In this study, we conduct an inter-university comparison and analyze the common points and differences between eight targeted universities. These include national universities (nine departments) that use the word 'community' ('chi-i-ki' in Japanese) in the name of a department. We use the term frequency-inverse document frequency (tf-idf), which is one of the popular indexes in text mining, and apply it to two documents, i.e., the diploma policy (DP) and the president's message (PM). We extracted two groups from the target universities. One group had relatively high tf-idf value in terms of the word 'community' across the two documents. The other group had a relatively low tf-idf value in their DP. Furthermore, the word 'community' does not appear in the PM. All universities have established faculties in order to connect with local communities, although the strategies of each university demonstrate different priorities from each other.

Proceedings - 2017 6th IIAI International Congress on Advanced Applied Informatics, IIAI-AAI 2017, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 218-220, 15 Nov. 2017, University evaluation is mandated by the School Education Act and the National University Cooperation Act. Universities are currently required to conduct self-assessments and improvements as university organizations. Yamaguchi University introduced Yamaguchi University Self-Assessment and Evaluation System (YUSE) before the incorporation of national universities, and the system has been in operation and under improvements for over ten years. The present paper reports improvements that have been made to the current self-assessment and evaluation system based on user requests. These improvements will provide useful information for improving evaluation systems at other universities. Moreover, it is possible for such improvements to be categorized into three frameworks that relate the systemic issues improved: system usability, links to other systems, and visualization functions (graphs) for analyses.

Journal of JSEE, Japanese Society for Engineering Education, 58, 4, 59-64, 20 Jul. 2010, Peer-reviwed, Diversification of the university entrance examinations induces differences of scholastic attainments of the students. It is difficult to maintain various students′ learning motivation with interests in basic engineering education courses. We think that the students can be motivated by learning the basic course about the intellectual property. Because the knowledge level of the freshmen about the intellectual property is almost equal to each other. The knowledge about the intellectual property is very important in the industrial offices where the students will work after graduation of university. We report the survey results of the intellectual property education programs for the first-year students. The follow-up survey and some problems of the intellectual property education program are also reported.

  • Constructing Ontology-Map for Visualization of Various Activities by Japanese Universities
    MORI MASAO
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), When ontology construction starts from existing data, it is difficult to construct an ontology that can identify generality. Therefore, we decided to summarize how to obtain the data model that is the basis of the ontology. We found that the FAIR principle for scientific data is also valid for data utilization in research information management. The necessary conditions for this principle are the assignment of persistent identifiers (PIDs) and the enhancement of metadata. We also studied the meta-information required to obtain a data model with a higher level of abstraction from data held in existing business systems, and concluded that the four concepts of table definitions, ER diagrams, star schemas, and multidimensional models are sufficient., 17K04677

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, Yamaguchi University, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), In recent years, formative assessment has come into focus as one of the most effective strategies for improving student achievement. In this study, we developed a visualization tool that can grasp students' understanding and lack of understanding, as represented by common patterns of mistakes students make. By analyzing test score data with the tool, we wish to comprehend and predict students' understanding. The analysis method adopted visualization clustering combined with human intuition (sight). To understand the pattern of students' mistakes in detail, the average score for each question was visualized, and the tool was implemented as a Moodle module, which will make it easy for many teachers to grasp the patterns of students' mistakes., 24700898
