材料, The Society of Materials Science, Japan, 59, 12, 932-937, Dec. 2010, Peer-reviwed, The axial fatigue tests with stress rations of -1.0 and 0.1 were conducted in order to investigate the effects of the laser peening (LP) treatment on the fatigue strength and the fatigue crack behaviors in the rolled aluminum alloy A7050 for aircraft structures. The LP treatment was effective for fatigue strength improvement in the fatigue lives before 2∼3 × 106cycles, but the treatment reduced the strength after the cycles at the both stress ratio conditions. Fatigue cracks initiated at the surface on the higher stress amplitude levels, but the cracks initiated in the internal positions on the lower stress levels. From the observation results of fatigue crack behaviors, it was clear that the LP treatment could control the crack initiation and the propagation behaviors. The fatigue strength behaviors by the LP treatment were evaluated by the stress intensity factor range including the residual stress induced by the LP treatment.

MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING A-STRUCTURAL MATERIALS PROPERTIES MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROCESSING, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA, 468, 230-236, Nov. 2007, Rotating bending fatigue tests in high cycle fatigue regime were carried out on alumina short fiber reinforced aluminum alloy composites (A1-MMCs) and magnesium alloy composites (Mg-MMCs). Materials of an aluminum alloy A6061 and a magnesium alloy AZ91D, and three volume fractions of 10%, 18%, and 25% of alumina short fibers were prepared to investigate effects of fiber volume fraction on fatigue properties such as a fatigue strength, surface crack initiation, and propagation behaviors. As results, it was found that the fatigue strength increased with an increase of volume fraction of alumina fibers in both MMCs, and the fatigue strength in A1-MMCs at elevated temperature was improved by the alumina short fibers reinforcement. The crack initiation sites were larger size alumina fibers, cluster of short fibers and large size alumina particles in both MMCs. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING A-STRUCTURAL MATERIALS PROPERTIES MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROCESSING, ELSEVIER SCIENCE SA, 468, 171-175, Nov. 2007, Peer-reviwed, It is well known that the degassing (DG) process is very useful for reducing cast defects such as porosities, micro-shrinkages, and inclusions in metallic alloy casting processes. The authors had previously clarified that DG processing is an effective method for improving the fatigue property of cast aluminum alloy. In this study, a treatment involving laser peening without coating (LPwC) was applied to the DG process cast aluminum alloy with an aim to further improve the fatigue property of the alloy. Fatigue tests under rotating bending were carried out on the LPwC-treated DG process cast aluminum alloy in order to investigate the effects of the LPwC treatment on fatigue properties such as fatigue strength, crack initiation, and propagation behavior. From the results, it was found that the fatigue life and fatigue strength at 10(7) cycles of the DG process cast aluminum alloy improved by the LPwC treatment. The possible reason for this improvement is the deceleration of the surface crack growth rate due to the compressive residual stress in the surface layer induced by the LPwC treatment.

Degassing was useful for decreasing cast defects and increasing the range of fatigue life and fatigue strength at 10(7) cycles compared with those of non-degassed cast alloys. The shot peening and the laser peening treatments also showed remarkable effects for increasing the resistance of crack propagation behaviors and improving the fatigue strength of the degassing processed cast aluminum alloys.

MATERIALS TRANSACTIONS, JAPAN INST METALS, 47, 4, 989-994, Apr. 2006, Peer-reviwed, High cycle fatigue tests in rotating bending loading were carried out in extruded AZ31 magnesium alloys with two kinds of grain size (about 30 mu m and about 50 mu m). Effects of microstructure and grain size on fatigue behaviors such as fatigue strength, crack initiation and propagation behaviors were discussed. As the results. there were no clear difference in the fatigue Strength, the crack initiation and propagation behaviors in the both alloys. There showed a clear bending point in the relation between crack propagation rate da/dN and the stress intensity factor range Delta K at about Delta K = 3 MPa root m. The fatigue lives in the higher stress level were evaluated from the inclusion size and the relation of da/dN - Delta K.

FATIGUE & FRACTURE OF ENGINEERING MATERIALS & STRUCTURES, BLACKWELL PUBLISHING LTD, 25, 8-9, 823-830, Aug. 2002, Peer-reviwed, In order to investigate the fatigue properties of high-strength steels in the very long-life regime up to over 10(9) cycles, cantilever-type rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out for two kinds of high-strength steels, SUJ2 and SNCM439, which were machined by grinding and finished by electropolishing after grinding. And also, the residual stress on the specimen surface of the ground specimen was examined by X-ray diffractometer in order to investigate effects of the residual stress on the fatigue properties. From the investigations, the S-N curves clearly have a tendency to decrease again in the longer-life range over 10(7) cycles for both types of specimen and for both steels. From observations of fracture surfaces, it was found that fatigue crack origins could be grouped into two types: (i) 'surface crack origin type' in the shorter-life regime and (ii) 'internal crack origin type' in the longer-life regime.

In order to undertake reliable engineering designs and optimum material selection, it is important to clarify the fatigue lives of shape memory alloy under thermal and mechanical cycles. In this paper, the fatigue lives of Ti-41.7 at% Ni-8.5 at% Cu alloy are investigated experimentally. Experiments are carried out by repeating the combination of the thermal cycle and the loading-unloading cycle. And the variations of the recovery stress, the irrecoverable strain and the recovery strain energy with cycles are investigated for various heating temperatures and strains. Furthermore, the fatigue lives for various heating temperatures and strains are investigated, and fractured surfaces are observed by SEM. Results show that the fatigue lives are divided into three regions according to the maximum strain and depend upon heating temperature. It is also noted that the fatigue lives can be estimated in relation to the dispersion strain energy obtained by the amount of decrease of recovery strain energy per cycle.

日本機械学会論文集(A編), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 66, 642, 320-325, Feb. 2000, In our previous paper, as the results of the high cycle rotating fatigue tests of HSP-treated SUS 316 L steel, the fatigue crack initiation was observed on inside of the specimen by fractographical investigation using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In this paper, in order to investigate the mechanism of the internal crack initiation and propagation behaviors, elastic-plastic finite element method (FEM) analysis was carried out. For the FEM analysis, the residual stress and the yield stress distributions models of the HSP-treated specimen were established based on the residual stress by X-ray diffraction measurement. As the results of analysis, the depth of maximum stress of the specimen by FEM agreed well with the depth of the crack origin by SEM. Also internal crack propagation behaviors could be satisfactorily explained by the FEM analysis.

日本機械学会論文集(A編), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 65, 638, 2086-2091, Oct. 1999, Rotating bending fatigue tests were carried out on specimens of ferrite-pearlitic ductile cast iron (FPDI) with a shot peening (SP) treatment. In addition, influences of the SP treatment on the fracture mechanism have been investigated, and changes in initial residual stress were discussed. As sesults, the S-N diagram showed a two-step bending behavior in long life region over 107 cycles. The surface hardened layer and the compressive residual stresses were observed more than 300 μm from the surface. Furthermore, the sites of the fatigue crack initiations were transferred from the surface to subsurface over 107 cycles region. Form the observations of the fracture surface before 107 cycles it was clarified that the fatigue crack initiated at the surface. In this case, the compressive residual stress became smaller by cyclic loading. However, the crack initiation sites on long life regions were casting defects which exist over 300 μm from the surface. And the fatigue strength of a horizontal part at 10e∼107 cycles was dependent on surface hardness.

日本機械学会論文集(A編), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 65, 634, 1263-1268, Jun. 1999, In order to clarify mechanisms of surface damage and to establish methods for evaluating strength degradation in ceramics subjected to impact of solid particles, testings of silicon nitride sphere impact to silicon nitride specimens were carried out. The residual strengths of specimens were measured by flexural tests, in which the damaged surfaces were the tensile sides. Fractures were classified to several types depending on their own impact damages. Influences of specimen thickness on the impact damage and the residual strength were also examined. From the comparison of test results of indentation and impact, the possibility was shown that the residual strength due to sphere impact would be evaluated using a method based on the elastic indentation theory.

日本機械学会論文集(A編), The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 65, 634, 1269-1275, Jun. 1999, In the 1st report, it was shown that it was possible to apply an elastic indentation theory to the evaluation of surface damage of ceramics due to sphere impact, although this was limited to low velocities in which elastic damage dominated. In this research, further investigation on the applicability of the theory to the residual strength evaluation was conducted. In the case that elastic damage or cone crack was related in the final fracture, the residual strength of ceramic specimens damaged by sphere impact was estimated using the elastic indentation theory and conventional fracture mechanics. Good agreement between estimated curves and test results were obtained.

GLARE3-5/4 consists of five thin sheets of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy and four layers of (0/90) glass/epoxy; Centrally notched specimens were fatigue tested under constant amplitude loading and crack length was measured using the DC potential-drop method. The size of the delamination produced between aluminum alloy sheets and fiber-adhesive layers was measured from ultrasonic C-scan pictures taken around the fatigue crack. The test results indicated the features of fatigue crack growth in GLARE3-5/4. MATERIALS SCIENCE RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL, SOC MATERIALS SCIENCE, JAPAN, 5, 1, 21-27, Mar. 1999, In estimating the maximum crack length in a structural component by statistics of extremes, one encounters the problem of how to choose the sample area S (the ratio of the sample area to the whole area) and the number of divisions m. In a previous paper, the present authors showed that the root-mean-square error of the estimated value, rootV((A) over cap (max)) can be approximated by a linear function of log S for the case where individual crack lengths follow an exponential distribution. In the present paper, by conducting a theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, it is shown that rootV((X) over cap (max))/sigma can be approximated by a linear function of logT regardless of the distribution forms of individual crack lengths, where sigma is the standard deviation of the double exponential distribution which the largest crack length in each elemental area follows, and T(= m/S) is the return period. It is also shown that rootV((X) over cap (max))/sigma by Monte Carlo simulation is 1.1 to 1.9 times larger than that calculated by theoretical analysis. Causes for this difference are discussed.

This material consists of five 2024-T3 Al alloy thin sheets and four layers of a (0°/90°) glass/epoxy composite. Centrally notched specimens were fatigue tested under constant amplitude loading and crack length was measured using a DC potentialdrop method. The following conclusions were obtained : (1) The scatter in fatigue crack growth lives was a little larger than that of a 2024-T3 Al alloy. (2) The relationship between crack growth rate, da/dN, versus stress intensity factor range, ΔK, obtained on the assumption of a monolithic material was different from that of a single 2024-T3 Al alloy sampled from the GLARE and showed the maximum stress dependence. (3) The relationship between da/dN and ΔKnn, the stress intensity factor range analyzed by Marissen on the basis of a fiber bridging effect, approximately agreed with that of a single 2024-T3 Al alloy specimen regardless of the maximum stress.

Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 65, 630, 334-339, Feb. 1999, Hard shot-peening (HSP) treatment was very successful for the improvement of the high cycle fatigue strength of SUS 316 L steel. However, the surface roughness by the HSP treatment was one of the dropping factors on the fatigue strength. In order to separate surface roughness effects from effects of compressive residual stress and strain hardening by the HSP treatment, the HSP-treated SUS 316 L was annealed in the vacuum to remove residual stress and recrystallization in hardened layer. The rotating bending fatigue tests for the annealed specimen were carried out under water cooling condition. The fatigue limit of annealed SUS 316 L was about 60 MPa lower than that of non-peened specimen which was about 200 MPa. To simulate the actual surface roughness, fatigue tests for the single notch specimens and small drilled holes specimens were carried out. As a result, the surface roughness effects by the HSP treatment were not consistent with the √(area) parameter model. The effects were explained by considering the stress concentration factor.

FATIGUE '99: PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL FATIGUE CONGRESS, VOLS 1-4, CHINA HIGHER EDUCATION PRESS BEIJING, 2/4, 1219-1224, 1999, In order to separate surface roughness effects from effects of compressive residual stress and strain hardening by the hard shot-peening (HSP) on the fatigue properties of Type316L austenitic stainless steel, rotating bending fatigue tests after annealing were carried out. As results the surface roughness effects were explained by considering the stress concentration factor, alpha, and the fatigue strength reduction factor, beta. The alpha of the HSP annealed specimen was similar to one of the single notch specimen whose depth was the point height of irregularities Rz of the HSP specimen.

GLARE3-5/4 consists of five thin sheets of 2024-T3 Al-alloy and four layers of (0/90) glass/epoxy. Centrally notched specimens were fatigue tested under constant amplitude loading and crack length was measured using the DC potential-drop method. The size of the delamination produced between Al-alloy sheets and fiber-adhesive layers was measured from ultrasonic C-scan pictures taken around the fatigue crack and the residual stress was assumed in order to obtain the da/dN-DeltaK(fin) relationship of GLARE3-5/4. Test results indicated that the da/dN-DeltaK(fin) relationship was independent of the maximum stress and agreed well with that of a 2024-T3 Al-alloy as the crack length increases.

However, a guide for determining the sample area S and the number of divisions m that influence the estimation accuracy of maximum crack length have not been obtained. In a previous paper, the authors showed that ( √)>)/ σ by the theoretical analysis is not equal to ( √ )>)/ σ by Monte Carlo simulation for the case when crack lengths follow exponential and Weibull distributions, where √ )> is the root mean squared error of the estimated value, and σ is the variance of the double exponential distribution which the largest crack length in each elemental area follows. It was also shown that this difference was due to √ )>. In the present paper, it is shown that the difference in values is due to the fact that the theoretical analysis differs from Monte Carlo simulation in the definition of the true maximum crack length, X_ for the case when crack lengths follow an exponential distribution. It is also shown that the difference in values is due to the fact that the theoretical analysis differs from Monte Carlo simulation in the difinition of X_ and that the largest crack length in each elemental area by Monte Carlo simulation does not strictly follow the double exponential distribution for the case when crack lengths follow a Weibull distribution.

Zairyo/Journal of the Society of Materials Science, Japan, Soc Mater Sci, Japan, 47, 8, 819-824, 1998, Indenter tests on a Al2O3 film - WC-Co substrate system using a Al2O3 sphere indenter were carried out to evaluate the fracture strength of the thin film coated on a substrate. Film thickness of the specimen was varied as 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 μm, and two kinds of substrate with different hardness and sphere indenter with a diameter of 16, 19, 25 mm were used. The micro fracture strength was evaluated from the load at which a ring crack initiated. Initiation of a ring crack was detected using AE. The fracture strength of the film was evaluated using the micro fracture strength, the residual stress of the film, and the concept of effective area based on the Weibull distribution. Residual stress was measured by the X-ray diffraction method. It was shown that estimated fracture strength of the film a little increased with decreasing the indenter size, and the effect of the film thickness and the substrate hardness on the fracture strength of the film was hardly shown.

EXPERIMENTAL MECHANICS, VOLS 1 AND 2, A A BALKEMA PUBLISHERS, 2, 1047-1052, 1998, The majority of the accidents for machines and structures is the cause of the fatigue fracture, so many investigations on the nondestructive inspection have been carried out about the fatigue fracture. As one of the methods, the investigation by using a diffracted surface SH ultrasonic wave (a horizontally shear wave) technique have been started recently. In the present study, the received wave forms during the fatigue process with rotating bending tests of low carbon steel have been measured by using a diffracted surface SH wave technique under three kinds of stress amplitude and two kinds of ultrasonic probe. It was found that changing of the wave area and of the propagation time of the received wave forms depend on number cycles of fatigue, a stress amplitude, fatigue properties and the kind of probe. From these results, the fatigue damage was evaluated in the subsurface of low carbon steel.

In recent years, attempts to apply statistics of extremes to the estimation of maximum crack length in a structural component have been made. In such estimation, it is necessary and important that the sample area is made as small as possible to restrain the labor for taking small cracks and measuring crack lengths and that the estimate of maximum crack length satisfies the needed accuracy of estimation. However, a guide for determining the sample area S (the ratio of the sample area to the whole area) and the number of division m that satisfy these two conditions has not been obtained. In the present paper, as a part of the study to obtain this guide, the relationship of √V(X̂max) / σ to log T is examined by conducting Monte Carlo simulation for the case when crack length follow a Weibull distribution (shape parameter α = 0.8,2.0), where √V(X̂max)/ σ is the root mean squared error of the estimated value, a is the variance of the double exponential distribution which the largest crack length in each elemental area follows, and T (= m/S) is the return period. As a result, it is shown that √(X̂max)/σ by Monte Carlo simulation is not equal to √(X̂max)/σ (the result of a previous paper) by the theoreti cal analysis quantitatively and that the cause for this difference is not σ but √(X̂max)/σ. It is also shown that √(X̂max)/σ by Monte Carlo simulation for the case when individual crack length follows a weibull distribution is not equal to √(X̂max)/σ (the result of a previous paper) by Monte Carlo simulation for the case when individual crack lengths follow an exponential distribution quantitatively.

Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 64, 619, 675-680, 1998, A silicon carbide sphere indentation was subjected to the surface of silicon carbide plate specimen to examine indentation damage patterns and residual strength of the specimen. After the residual strength of the damaged specimen was measured by the four-point flexural test, damage patterns were observed with the scanning electron microscope. In the case that the cone crack (equivalent to elastic damage) was the fracture origin, the residual strength was evaluated. A method of approximate analysis of cone crack taking account of mechanism of stable crack growth was proposed. The estimated values were almost in agreement with the measured values.

Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 64, 619, 681-688, 1998, Since plastic deformations occur in contact between silicon nitride sphere and plate, the elastic/plastic stress analysis is required to evaluate the residual strength of ceramics, surface of which is damaged due to the sphere indentation. For the purpose of evaluating elastic/plastic sphere indentation damages and residual strength of ceramics, an approximate analysis of elastic/plastic contact deformation in ceramics was carried out. The elastic/plastic internal stresses of the ceramic plate were also analysed by using the finite element method. Reasonable correlation between the maximum residual stress caused at surface in the tangential direction due to sphere indentation and the residual strength was obtained.

Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, 63, 606, 392-398, 1997, Indentation tests on silicon nitride specimens using a silicon nitride sphere were carried out in order to establish a method for evaluating sphere indentation or impact damage of surface layers and post-indentation residual strength in structural ceramics. The residual strengths of indented specimens were measured by four-point bending tests. The relationship between indentation load and cone crack length was derived from the equilibrium condition of cone crack. Then the residual strength was estlmated from the cone crack length. The estimated values were in good agreement with the was estimated from the cone crack length. The estimated values were in good agreement with the measured values. only in the region of low indentation load where elastic deformation is dominant.

In a previous paper, the present authors showed that the root mean squared error of the estimated value, √V(Xmax) can be approximated by a linear function of log S for the case when individual crack lengths follow an exponential distribution. In the present paper, by conducting theoretical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, it is shown that √V(Xmax) / σ can be approximated by a linear function of log T regardless of the distribution forms of individual crack lengths, where σ is the variance of the double exponential distribution which the largest crack length in each elemental area follows, and T (=m/S) is the return period. It is also shown that √V(Xmax) / σ by Monte Carlo simulation is 1.1 —1.9 times larger than that by the theoretical analysis. Replicas of the specimen surface were taken at a constant interval of strain cycles, and the lengths of all the cracks on the entire specimen surface (= 628 mm2) were measured by means of image processing through the life. Based on statistics of extremes, the maximum crack length was estimated using the crack length data taken from the sample area of 16 mm2, and the estimated maximum length was compared with the measured maximum length. It was found that before initiation of crack coalescence, the estimated value was in good agreement with the measured value. Thus, the limit and usefulness of statistics of extremes in the estimation of the maximum fatigue crack length were shown.

Journal of the Society of Materials Science, Japan, 41, 464, 637-642, 1992, Fatigue crack growth tests under tension-tension loading were performed on center-notched specimens of a high strength steel HT60, and the statistical property of fatigue crack growth rate da/dN was studied by testing 36 specimens under the same condition. The fatigue crack length was measured automatically using the DC electrical potential method and a microcomputer. The experimental data were analyzed from the viewpoint of the composite variability model of the fatigue crack growth rate which had been proposed by the present authors. The model parameters were estimated by a new method proposed in this paper as well as by the one proposed previously. The result of data analysis was compared with the previous result of 2024-T3 Al alloy. When expressing C in the Paris equation da/dN = C(ΔK)m as C = C*gl where g and l correspond to inter-specimen variability and intra-specimen variability of C respectively, the coefficients of variation of g and l for HT60 were approximately of the same magnitude as those for 2024-T3 Al alloy. On the other hand, the correlation distance for intra-specimen variability was smaller for HT60 than for 2024-T3 Al alloy. When a straight line log(da/dN)=logCs+mslog(ΔK) was fitted to the data of each specimen, ms and log Cs of each specimen followed normal distributions approximately and strong negative correlation was found between ms and log Cs. When applying statistics of extremes, it is necessary to measure lengths of a large number of short cracks. This is time-consuming and laborious, and hence some automization of measurement is desirable. In the present paper, image processing was applied to measurement of short crack lengths and its usefulness was investigated. For this purpose, creep-fatigue tests were carried out on SUS 316 L. Smooth specimens were subjected to slow-fast cyclic strain of a total strain range of 1 % at 650°C in air with ε^.=2×10-5/s in tension and ε^.=2×10-3/s in compression. Taking replicas of the specimen surface, the images of the replicas were put into the image processing equipment through the CCD camera and the stereoscopic microscope. Using some new algorithms developed in this study as well as conventional algorithms, individual crack lengths were measured. The crack length measured by means of image processing was compared with that by the eye observation. It was found that the error of measurement of crack length by image processing was within ±10%. The distribution of the crack length was also studied. Furthermore, propagation and coallescence behaviors of cracks were investigated by means of image processing.

Journal of the Society of Materials Science, Japan, 37, 420, 1010-1016, 1988, With an aim to establish a probabilistic model for fatigue crack growth rate da/dN from a reliability engineering point of view, a DC electrical potential system was developed to measure the crack length automatically as a function of the number of repeated cycles during fatigue tests. The crack length measured at an arbitrary interval of the number of stress cycles was fed into a personal computer, and processed in real time. This personal computer was also used to control the applied load precisely. To examine the performance of the system developed, preliminary tension-tension fatigue tests were carried out on the center-cracked specimens of 2024-T3 Al alloy under the condition of the constant stress range and the constant stress ratio. The relation between the electrical potential and the crack length was first determined using four specimens, and a sixth order polynomial was obtained for this relation. Then, statistical data of da/dN were obtained using eighteen specimens. The scatter band of the log da/dN vs. log ΔK plot of the whole data was narrower than that in our previous tests in which a travelling microscope was used for crack length measurement. This result shows that the electrical potential system developed works well. The maximum error of the system in crack length measurement was about 50μm. The coefficient of variation of the crack propagation life was also smaller in the present test than in the previous test. This is considered due to that the applied load and the temperature were controlled more precisely than in the previous test. Thus, the system developed enables to obtain statistical data of the fatigue crack growth rate accurately and efficiently. © 1988, The Society of Materials Science, Japan. All rights reserved.
