Bioelectromagnetics, 46, 3, e70002, Apr. 2025, Peer-reviwed, True, In the last few decades, extensive efforts have been dedicated to developing computational methods for modeling the interaction of the human body with electromagnetic fields (EMFs). These studies are crucial for the establishment of exposure limits in international standards and guidelines for human protection from EMF, as well as for advancing personalized dosimetry assessment for medical applications using EMF. To summarize the state-of-the-art knowledge in this field, the IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (ICES) held an International Workshop on Computational Bioelectromagnetics in February 2024. This review summarizes the technical presentations and discussions from the workshop and was contributed by multiple authors, encompassing topics such as the tissue dielectric property measurement, low-frequency and radio-frequency bioelectromagnetic modeling methods, stochastic modeling in electromagnetic-thermal dosimetry, intercomparison studies, and computational uncertainties. The insights gained from this workshop will guide future research and aid in the development of more accurate and reliable exposure assessment methods.

A novel wideband dual‐band bandstop filter with multi‐transmission zeros and multi‐reflection zeros is presented. It consists of two pairs of symmetric open‐ended coupled lines at two sides and (2N − 1) pairs of coupled‐line sections with an open‐circuited stub in the middle. Through even‐ and odd‐mode analyses, general simultaneous equations for characteristic impedances are derived with the proposed algorithm. By suitably selecting all the design parameters, the proposed topology could not only provide a controllable equal‐ripple response in the passband but also control the stopband rejection, bandwidth (BW), and centre frequency ratio in the stopband flexibly. For verification, one prototype circuit is finally fabricated and measured in the experiment. Good agreement between the measured and simulated results is attained so as to successfully validate the correctness of the proposed design method.

Lead, Scientific reports, 13, 1, 17397-17397, 13 Oct. 2023, Peer-reviwed, True, This study presents a parametric analysis of the steady-state temperature elevation in rat skin models due to millimeter wave exposure at frequencies from 6-100 GHz. The statistical data of the thickness of skin layers, namely epidermis, dermis, dermal white adipose tissue, and panniculus carnosus, were measured for the first time using the excised tissues of real male Sprague-Dawley rats. Based on the precise structure obtained from the histological analysis of rat skin, we solve the bioheat transfer equation to investigate the effects of changes in parameters, such as body parts and thermal constants, on the absorbed power density and temperature elevation of biological tissues. Owing to the notably thin dermal white adipose tissue layer, the surface temperature elevation in the rat head and dorsal skin at 6-100 GHz is 52.6-32.3% and 83.3-58.8% of the average values of different human skin models, respectively. Our results also reveal that the surface temperature elevation of rat skin may correlate with the tissue thickness and deep blood perfusion rates.

Lead, Frontiers in Public Health, Frontiers Media {SA}, 10, 795414, 14 Feb. 2022, Peer-reviwed, This study presents an investigation of clothed human skin exposure to obliquely incident electromagnetic waves at 60 GHz. We clarified the combined impacts of the cloth material, incidence angle, and polarization on the assessment of transmittance and absorbed power density (APD ) at the skin surface. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted considering the thickness variation of the cloth material and skin tissue. For the case of transverse magnetic™ wave exposure, the transmittance increases with increasing incident angle up to the maximum transmittance angle in the range from 60 to 80°, which is known as the Brewster effects, regardless of textile materials and air gap between cloth and skin. The air gap results in a periodic fluctuation of theAPD , where the variation is almost within 1 dB when the incident power density is constant and the incident angle is smaller than 40°. Our results also show that as the air gap increases to 2.5 mm, i.e., half-wavelength at 60 GHz in the air, theAPD within the skin surface covered by typical cloth materials increases up to 40% compared with that of bare skin. Although the use of several cloth materials may increase the transmittance andAPD in oblique incidence scenarios, all the results of theAPD do not exceed the basic restriction for local exposure, demonstrating that the current guidelines for human exposure to electromagnetic fields are appropriate for preventing the excessive exposure at 60 GHz considering the impacts of oblique incidence angles and cloth materials.

2019 26th International Conference on Telecommunications, ICT 2019, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 453-457, 01 Apr. 2019, In this paper, we develop an K-order model expressing the specific absorption rate (SAR) at an observation point when evaluating the electromagnetic exposure to multiple-Antenna transmitters. By using the proposed model, we will be able to precisely estimate the SARs for different combinations of the relative phases of the sources, and thus to identify the maximum SAR. Detailed discussions on the K-order model and the estimation technique will be presented. We also conduct several measurements to verify the performance of the proposed estimation technique, and compare the effectiveness the proposed technique with conventional techniques. As a result, it is confirmed that the proposed technique with K-order estimations can considerably reduce the estimation errors, and thus giving highly precise estimated SAR values. In particular, when evaluating of the SAR of a three-Antenna configuration, the maximum estimation error caused by conventional estimations is about 6%, which can be reduced to about 3% or 2% by the 1-and 2-order estimations, respectively.

IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers (IEICE), E101.B, 2, 349-356, Feb. 2018, Peer-reviwed,A new Waffle-iron Ridge Guide (WRG) structure that has the ability to control both wavelength and impedance is proposed. With the proposed structure, not only can the wavelength be controlled over a wide range for both fast- and slow-waves in free space but the impedance can also be controlled. These features can improve the performance of array antennas in terms of reducing grating lobes and side lobes. In this paper, we discuss and evaluate a design scheme using equivalent circuits and EM-simulation.
This paper also discusses how the conductivity and dielectric loss in the WRG affect the total gain of the array antenna.

IEICE Communications Express, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers (IEICE), 6, 5, 188-193, May 2017, Peer-reviwed,A mechanical linear sliding phase shifter using waffle-iron ridge guides (WRG) and its application to a beam steering antenna are shown. The structure of the new phase shifter is simpler than we have presented previously in that the number of metal layers has been reduced. Another advantage of the new phase shifter is that with it simple beam steering antennas can be realized. This paper explains the principle and the characteristics of the phase shifter and gives an example of a beam steering antenna.

IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E100.B, 2, 323-335, Feb. 2017, Peer-reviwed, A simple but efficient method for evaluating the channel capacity of 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems is proposed. First, the channel capacity of a half-wavelength dipole array antenna is calculated using the Monte Carlo method by changing the incident-wave signal-to-noise power ratio, the power difference between two elements, and the correlation coefficient. Using the calculated results, a polynomial function is derived by multivariate regression analysis to estimate the channel capacity. The validity of the developed function is confirmed by comparing the channel capacity estimated by the developed function with that calculated by the Monte Carlo method using a MIMO array antenna operated under various scenarios, including antenna-human body electromagnetic interactions and radio-wave propagation environments, for future MIMO systems. The function is also validated by means of two experimental approaches: the use of radiation patterns measured in an anechoic chamber and the use of a spatial fading emulator that can create a two-dimensional fading environment.

Hideki KIRINO; Kazuhiro HONDA; Kun LI; Koichi OGAWA
IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E100.B, 2, 219-226, Feb. 2017, Peer-reviwed, In this paper we use equivalent circuits to analyze the wavelengths in a Fast and Slow wave Waffle-iron Ridge Guide (FS-WRG). An equivalent circuit for the transverse direction is employed and the transverse resonance method is used to determine the fast wave wavelength. Another equivalent circuit, for the inserted series reactance in the waveguide, is employed for the fast and slow wave wavelength. We also discuss the physical system that determines the wavelengths and the accuracy of this analysis by comparing the wavelengths with those calculated by EM-simulation. Furthermore, we demonstrate use of the results obtained in designing an array antenna.

IEICE Communications Express, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), 5, 10, 394-400, Oct. 2016, Peer-reviwed,This paper presents a calibration method for measuring the channel capacity using a three-dimensional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Over-The-Air (OTA) apparatus. The reference level is calibrated to establish the Gaussian angular power spectra in elevation in consideration of various power losses that exist in the fading emulator. The measured results of MIMO channel capacity agree well with the analytical outcomes calculated by Monte Carlo simulation, demonstrating that the proposed calibration method gives a high degree of accuracy for measuring the channel capacity using the three-dimensional MIMO-OTA apparatus.

IEICE Communications Express, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), 5, 9, 297-302, Sep. 2016, Peer-reviwed,This paper presents a methodology of controlling the spatial correlation of BS (base station) antenna realized by a bilateral fading emulator for MIMO-OTA (Over-The-Air) testing. On the basis of Jakes theory, the base station correlation is controlled by setting the initial phases of scatterers in a two-dimensional fading emulator. The experimental results show that the designed correlation coefficient of an uplink channel using the proposed method agrees well with the theoretical value. Further, it is confirmed that the channel capacity of uplink channel can be controlled when the base station and mobile terminal correlations are changed simultaneously.

Lead, IEICE Communications Express, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), 5, 6, 189-194, Jun. 2016, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a weighted-polarization antenna applied to BAN (Body Area Network) on-body communication systems. A primal objective is to achieve the radio link enhancement in both downlink and uplink on-body channels. The proposed antenna obtains an optimum signal level using a weight function considering the BP-XPR (Body Proximity Cross-Polarization Power Ratio) and antenna tilt angle. The results show that the proposed antenna achieved more than a 3-dB improvement of received signal compared with the other types of antennas, such as vertical dipole, horizontal dipole and equal weight combined antennas, regardless of the arm-swing motion and antenna placement, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method to enhance BAN on-body radio links.

Lead, IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E99.B, 1, 167-176, Jan. 2016, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a new methodology of the over-the-air (OTA) assessment for vertically arranged multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array antennas. Particular emphasis is placed on how well handset MIMO antennas with a vertically arranged structure are characterized using the limited number of scatterers implemented in a fading emulator. First we studied the mechanism of the arrangement of scatterers on the variation of channel responses using a proposed three-dimensional analytical model. It is shown that the condition of a 3D-OTA with the prescribed parameters allows the correlation to be reduced, which permits the channel capacity to increase in the same manner that sufficient scatterers are distributed over the entire solid angle. Then the appropriate scatterers arrangement for a 3D-OTA instrument considering the number of DUT antenna elements and multipath characteristics is investigated. The analytical results show that a suitable scatterers arrangement can be determined for various conditions of multipath environments and numbers of array elements, and that the arrangement can be employed for designing an actual 3D-OTA apparatus.
Scientific journal, English - Weighted-Polarization Wearable MIMO Antenna with Three Orthogonally Arranged Dipoles Based on RF Signal Processing
Kazuhiro HONDA; Kun LI; Koichi OGAWA
IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E99.B, 1, 58-68, Jan. 2016, Peer-reviwed, In this paper, we present a weighted-polarization wearable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna that is based on radio-frequency (RF) signal processing to realize ultra-high-speed and high-capacity mobile communications. The proposed antenna is comprised of three orthogonal dipoles, two of which can be selected according to a weight function in different usage scenarios. The weight function is determined by considering the variation in the cross-polarization power ratio (XPR) and the antenna inclination angle which depend on the radio-propagation environment and human motion. To confirm the suitability of the proposed antenna, we perform preliminary experiments to evaluate the channel capacity of a weighted-polarization wearable MIMO antenna with an arm-swinging dynamic phantom. The measured and analytical results are in good agreement, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed antenna. We demonstrate that the proposed antenna is suitable for realizing gigabit mobile communications in future wearable MIMO applications.

Lead, IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E98.B, 4, 543-553, Apr. 2015, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents a new methodology for realizing a Rice channel in BAN Over-The-Air (OTA) testing using a fading emulator with a dynamic phantom. For the proposed apparatus to be effective, the fading emulator must be provided with an appropriate K-factor that represents the actual propagation environment indoors. Further, an implementation of the Rice channel to the proposed fading emulator in a BAN situation is presented. Thereafter, a calibration method for the fading emulator to adjust the actual K-factor of the on-body Rice channel is advanced. This calibration method is validated by analyzing the variations in the instantaneous K-factor attributed to the arm-swinging motion. Finally, an experiment is conducted for a continuous human walking motion with the fading emulator using an arm-swinging dynamic phantom. The results show that the developed fading emulator allows BAN-OTA testing to replicate the actual Rice channel propagation environment with the consideration of the dynamic characteristics of human walking motion.

IEICE Transactions on Communications, Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers ({IEICE}), E96.B, 10, 2530-2541, 2013, Peer-reviwed, This paper presents the shadowing analysis of a body area network (BAN) diversity antenna based on the statistical measurements of the human walking motion. First, the dynamic characteristics of the armswing motion were measured using human subjects, and a statistical analysis was then carried out using the measured data to extract useful information for the analysis of a BAN diversity antenna. Second, the analytical results of the shadowing effects of the BAN antenna were shown based on the statistical data of the swing motion. The difference between the typical and the realistic arm-swinging models significantly affected the bit error rate (BER) characteristic of the BAN antenna. To eliminate the shadowing caused by the movement of the arms, a BAN diversity antenna was used. Particular emphasis was placed on the evaluation of the spatial separation of the diversity antennas to attain reduction of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required to achieve a specific BER performance, considering the combined outcome of shadowing and multipath fading unique to BAN antenna systems. We determined that an antenna angle separation of greater than 80° is required to reduce the shadowing effects when the diversity antenna is mounted at the left waist in a symmetrical configuration. Further, an antenna angle separation of 120° is required when the diversity antenna is mounted in an asymmetric configuration.
